Sockeye opening expected Friday DFO predicting potential record run this year By Nei l Corbe tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

Fraser Valley anglers are waiting like kids at Christmas for the sockeye salmon opening, a run that could more than double the previous record. They should only have to wait a few more days. “It’s a matter of being a little patient for a little while longer, and we should have more information by Friday,” said Jennifer Nener, Department of Fisheries and Oceans area director for the lower Fraser River. There was an initial opening for First Nations fishermen over the weekend. It will be expanded in the week ahead. See Sockeye, 9

Ridge gets first speed humps Traffic calming for Shady Lane along 124th By M o ni s ha M ar tin s mmartins@mapleridgenews.com

The first speed humps in Maple Ridge are already slowing down traffic on Shady Lane. Technically known as “vertical deflections,” the raised asphalt bumps were installed last week along 124th Avenue, between Laity and 216th Street, at a cost of $10,000. Though speed humps are not a

recommended calming measure in the district’s traffic management policy, they are being tested along the stretch with the support from the neighbourhood, which has been plagued by an increase in traffic since the Golden Ears Bridge opened. District general manager of public works and development services Frank Quinn said the neighbourhood is already seeing a decrease in vehicles traveling along 124th Ave. “The people who use it for rat running are probably not excited about having to slow down,” he

added. “But mostly we are interested in the comments from the neighbourhood, and they seem pretty positive so far.” The district plans on monitoring the effectiveness of the speed humps for the next six months to a year. They were installed after much consultation with residents of Shady Lane. Quinn said the district looked at other measures, such as chicanes, but there were right-of-way issues. “When the residents understood

that we were prepared to look at speed humps, that’s the one they wanted to go with.” Originally known as Blackstock Road, Shady Lane is listed on the Maple Ridge’s heritage register and valued by local residents for its “grand allée,” of fir, cedar, hemlocks and maples that form a verdant canopy over the street. Jennifer Caros and her neighbours are pleased that the speed humps have already reduced traffic and, more importantly, are getting drivers to slow down. See Traffic, 11

‘Protect us’ from wild fire Maple Ridge residents want council to stop stalling on new plan By M o ni s ha M ar tin s mmartins@mapleridgenews.com

I

n the forests that surround Maple Ridge, you only have to dig a few metres to find a charred layer, evidence of a time when wildfires were more frequent is not difficult to find. In 1929, a spark from a locomotive caused an extensive, disastrous blaze that destroyed almost 60,000 hectares of forest and ended logging in the Alouette River valley. Back then, Maple Ridge was sparsely populated. Now, with suburbs built into the edge of the forests, the consequences of wildfire would be costly and traumatic. That’s why every community needs to assess those risks, says Lori Daniels, an associate professor at the University of British Columbia who is using tree rings to reconstruct the history of forests and better understand the effects of fire, pest outbreaks and climate change. “We tend to think that there is such a low probability of it happening that it’s something we shouldn’t be concerned about now.” Climate change and a large stockpile of fuel mean the forests of B.C. are moving towards another chapter of frequent fires. We may think of coastal “rain forests” as not burning frequently, and that may have been true 100 years ago, before logging and when most of the trees were huge, old-growth giants. “Those aren’t the forests that surround our communities any longer,” says Daniels. Almost all the forests near urban areas are second growth, having regenerated over the past 60 to 100 years. “If we are getting longer and drier summers, the fuels are becoming drier for longer periods of time,” says Daniels. In the Interior, the effects of climate change are more pronounced. On the coast of B.C., it is more subtle. But those changes still affect

Nicole Read by a house being built in Silver Valley, on the edge of the forest. fuel. “We have some very high fuel loads adjacent to our towns on the coast,” said Daniels. In Maple Ridge, 60 per cent of residential development is within the forest interface. With a large stockpile of tinder dry trees and debris on the forest floor, a wildfire could quickly get out of control. In 2003, a fire in Kelowna destroyed 25,000 hectares of forest, burned 239 homes and led to the evacuation of 27,000 people. It led the province to push communities across B.C. to create wildfire protection plans, with strategies to reduce the risks of total destruction. Maple Ridge approved its Wildfire Protection Plan in 2007, but remains stalled on how to implement it. In June, Maple Ridge council instructed staff to create a wildfire protection zone, but only after a 4-3 vote. Staff are currently preparing a bylaw that will create permit areas requiring new homes built adjacent to forested areas to use fireresistent walls, roofs and fire-smart landscaping. Ten-metre buffer areas would be required to separate new suburbs from forests. Overall, the extra cost for each new home built near the forest should be about $5,000. Couns. Mike Morden, Corisa

604.463.7127 www.eyedoctorsmapleridge.ca

Bell and Al Hogarth voted against the bylaw because they are worried about costs. Daniels understands why politicians might be concerned about costs, but asks them to consider a “what-if ” scenario. “We see places like Slave Lake, where the fire burned right into the town. They had to make triage decisions on, ‘Should we save the town hall or the hospital?’” Assuming a fire won’t happen is a false sense of security. That’s why it’s important to consider all the consequences of what it would cost should a wildfire tear through the community, she adds. That means looking at the costs of fighting a fire, using a chemical fire retardant and crews digging trenches or fire breaks. “They are very costly in terms of economics and in terms of the environment.” On Tuesday, there were 130 wildfires burning across B.C. The biggest, near Burns Lake, has scorched 50,000 hectares. Locally, the fire risk remains “high.” If temperatures stay steady, the risk could reach “extreme.” Maple Ridge fire chief Dane Spence has been unable to lend any firefighters to the province’s wildfire fighting efforts because of the risk of a blaze starting locally. So far, Maple Ridge has been able to proceed with a few of the recom-

mendations in its wildfire protection plan. They include clearing brush to reduce the fire hazard on some municipal land and purchasing portable sprinkler units to soak roofs. But Morden believes creating a development permit area won’t achieve the objectives of the wildfire protection plan. “I am concerned about risk, but this whole wildfire development permit isn’t about life safety because we have sufficient measures in our building codes right now to keep everybody safe in their homes.” He said that all new homes now require sprinklers. They won’t stop a wildfire, but would prevent anybody inside a home from being burned up, he adds. “We can do all the works that are recommended [in the plan], but don’t have to put in a wildfire development permit.” He insists the areas around Maple Ridge rarely reaches a “high” wild fire risk. “This is rainy Haney for a reason.” Morden, who’ll be seeking the mayor’s seat in November, is unlikely to support a bylaw to create the wildfire permit zone until he sees a detailed break-down of what it’s going to cost. He wants to know how the plan is going to affect developers, homeowners and, ultimately, taxpayers. The wildfire plan adds bureaucracy, additional inspectors and

the costs to keep clearing areas to reduce the fire risk. “It’s an ongoing maintenance issue and it’s going to escalate costs for the taxpayer,” Morden said. However, the Union of British Columbia Municipalities has a program that currently funds up to 90 per cent of that work to a maximum of $400,000 per municipality per calendar year. Under the program, a municipality can receive $400,000 worth of wildland fuel treatment for a municipal cost of $40,000. UBCM will also pay up to 75 per cent of the costs to create a fuel management prescription program. But it’s not only the costs to taxpayers that Morden is worried about. He believes the wildfire development permit zones will affect home values and drive up the costs of development, making housing unaffordable in Maple Ridge. He said it’s not only developers who’ve expressed their disdain of the wildfire plan to him, but homeowners and taxpayers. “It’s getting to be a very expensive world and taxpayers are done. They can’t pay anymore,” said Morden. “Until I get a clear picture on the costs, top to bottom who it’s going to affect and why, I am not going to support it.” Several residents remain concerned that Maple Ridge is stalling on implementing the recommendation of its wildfire protection plan. Nicole Read, who lives in Silver Valley, is one of them. Read and her neighbours realized they were sitting ducks amongst a forest in 2012 when four homes under construction in Formosa Plateau were engulfed by flames sparked by a construction worker. Read wishes the wildfire development permit area was in place when she moved to Silver Valley in 2010. She would rather have paid for upgrades such as fire-resistant roofing and siding when she purchased her home. Now, it’s just too expensive to install such materials herself. “Of all the costs that get unnecessarily levied on homeowners, I’m thinking that’s one of the costs that people would be willing to pay for,” said Read. She wants council to act quickly on fire-hardening the community. “It really is concerning,” she said, adding that council should be deferring to the opinion of experts, such as the fire chief. “The politicking is very disappointing. This shouldn’t have anything to do with politics, this should have to do with people’s safety. It leaves people unprotected, and I don’t think that’s fair.”

4-H clubs the backbone of Country Fest Centennials give fair a boost By Colleen Fla n ag a n cflanagan@mapleridgenews.com

Festival-goers had to park their cars along Lougheed Highway on the weekend after lots at the Albion Fairgrounds filled to capacity for Country Fest. The 114th annual event attracted it’s largest crowd yet, largely

due to the 100th anniversary celebrations for the City of Pitt Meadows and the local 4-H Club. Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Agricultural Association general manager Lorraine Bates estimates that the two-day fair attracted more than 18,000 visitors. There were 1,300 4-H registrants alone, from Vancouver Island to Armstrong. “The barns were

absolutely filled. We couldn’t fit one more animal in any of the barns,” Bates said.

“We couldn’t fit one more animal in any of the barns.” Lorraine Bates, fair general manager “Between the beef and the dairy, there

was 200 head of cattle. They can’t even get that at the larger fair.” New to the fair this year, lawn mower racing was a popular attraction. Bates is considering expanding it to two days next year. She is also expecting the numbers to stick at next years event. “There are a lot of [4-H] clubs that had never been here before, but they will be back. Once clubs come they usually stay.”

Rescued boxer best in show By S teph Tro u g h ton newsroom@mapleridgenews.com

Left to starve and fend for himself on the streets of Los Angeles, one boxer puppy should never have survived, let alone win an award in a local 4-H competition. But that is what brindle boxer puppy Athena did at Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Country Fest, which hosted the B.C. 4-H centennial event at the Albion Fairgrounds this past weekend. Members of 4-H clubs from across B.C. and Alberta were grouped into senior and junior categories, then further divided by the number of years they had competed with their dogs in showmanship, obedience and agility. For accumulating the highest number of points in the junior category for showmanship and obedience, Athena and her handler, Kanaka Creek elementary student Aspen Strikwerda, were presented with the B.C. 4-H junior high aggregate award. Strikwerda’s mother Karen Jean says she and her family watched Athena develop from an insecure, easily frightened and passively aggressive puppy to a content and markedly more confident three-year-old

They also credit the Haney Horse and Hound 4-H club for providing a foundation for youth who want to learn animal training skills and helping animals gain confidence. Aspen also agrees. “I could not have won this award without all the help I got, especially from the leaders and senior girls who were always there to help me.” The family learned about Athena through the non-profit organization called Boxers Without Borders, which was fostering her. “Love and acceptance was a critical ingredient in raising this rescue puppy,” says Jean.

Driving habits It shouldn’t come as any great surprise that a recent ICBC survey found many parents are passing along poor driving habits to their teenagers. What is less expected is that only about a third of them seem to be aware of the impact their bad behaviour is having. Whether it’s speeding, failing to come to a complete stop or not properly concentrating on the task at hand, for some, the rules of the road tend to grow a little hazy over the years. And the more comfortable we get behind the wheel, the more corners we tend to cut. Thanks to experience, most of the time, it works out. But for young drivers, who in all likelihood still occasionally flip on the wipers when they mean to signal a turn, there is an overwhelming amount of information coming at them fast. Add to that, heavy traffic, aggressive and impatient drivers and a seemingly endless succession of construction projects to create stress and confusion, and new drivers have enough to deal with. Allowing teens to start out with bad habits passed down, however inadvertently, is like setting them up to fail. Along with the caveat, ICBC offers a few tips for parents as they prepare their teens for one of the (simultaneously) greatest freedoms and responsibilities they will ever know. When possible, they suggest, provide your teen with a vehicle that is a manageable size and has good visibility and an automatic transmission. Ensure they have a firm grasp of the rules and regulations. Most importantly, parents should remove themselves from an emotionally charged situation and allow an expert to provide instruction. Whatever the cost, it’s worth it to know you’re giving them their best shot at success. – Black Press

In defence of younger drivers VICTORIA – A recent column on the B.C. government’s decision to raise speed limits on portions of rural highways excited numerous comments from readers. Some questioned my suggestion that today’s new drivers are worse B.C. Views because they spend Tom Fletcher their formative years staring at screens in the back seat instead of looking out the window and grasping the grim physics of the real world. There is no doubt that B.C.’s graduated licensing system for new drivers is more difficult than what my generation faced. Those vehicle stickers with the “L” (for learner, or as teens prefer “loser”) and “N” (for novice, or in teen-speak “nerd”) have been around since 1998. The two steps make getting a full driver’s licence a longer, more difficult and expensive process. Statistics provided by ICBC show what new drivers are up against. First there is the written “knowledge test” to obtain a learner’s permit. From 2004 to 2008, more than half of applicants failed in their first attempt. Things improved in subsequent years, with a 46-per-cent failure rate in 2009 declining to 42 per cent by 2013. The first road test is required to go from “L” to “N” and it seems sufficiently harsh. The failure rate has been consistently around 47 per cent in the past six

years. More practice and another $35 are required to try again. Students fare better on the second road test, where the failure rate has consistently been 21-22 per cent for the past decade. ICBC reports that in the first three years of the graduated licence program, the new driver crash rate dropped by 16 per cent. In 2003, the required learner and novice periods were extended, and restrictions on the novice stage were increased. New driver crashes fell by another 28 per cent. Those restrictions include the number of passengers and a “zero tolerance” for alcohol. Impaired crash and injury statistics aren’t available for drivers in the graduated licence program, only fatalities. They grew as more new drivers were enrolled in the new system, to a high of 24 in 2007. But that declined to 14 by 2012. There will always be young people who drive impaired, speed or make other fatal errors. But it’s difficult to argue that today’s system in B.C. is lenient. A couple of readers were concerned about the effect of higher rural speed limits on older drivers. One suggested that higher limits on rural highways are a poor mix with vacationing seniors hauling oversized motorhomes, trailers and boats. Another cited the coming wave of retired baby boomers and added a likely increase in marijuana-impaired drivers, all emboldened by the invitation to drive faster. B.C.’s medical health officers issued a letter denouncing the decision by Transportation Minister Todd Stone to raise

speed limits. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall said the research is clear that higher speeds increase the risk and severity of incidents. Then there is the government’s own position, articulated in a road safety strategy released last year by Attorney General Suzanne Anton.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall said the research is clear that higher speeds increase the risk and severity of incidents. “Research is conclusive that at higher speeds, more people are killed and injured in the traffic system,” it states. “At lower speeds, fewer are killed and injured as a direct result of the safety buffer that lowered speeds create.” The strategy notes that new technologies such as adaptive cruise control are becoming available. B.C. is also testing electronic highway speed limit signs that change with weather and traffic conditions. Next comes self-driving vehicle systems, so drivers will be able to check their phones again. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

This week’s question: Do you support fines for owners who let dogs off-leash in non-sanctioned areas? @ Online poll: cast your vote at mapleridgenews.com, or e-mail your vote and comments to editor@mapleridgenews.com

THE NEWS/letters Dog owners taxpayers, too Editor, The News: Re: Pitt cracks down on dog owners (The News, July 25). Elected officials and staff, we are extremely disappointed to find that much time and effort is being spent in increasing the regulations and fines for off-leash activities at our local parks. Dog owners are taxpayers, too. Increasing the rules and regulations will only hurt the responsible dog owners. The idiots who don’t clean up after their dogs, who let their dogs off leash at inappropriate times, who throw poop bags into trees will still behave the same way. The majority of dog owners are good, responsible people who only let their dogs off leash at sports fields and schools at appropriate times. Many of us clean up other dogs feces that we find at these parks so that we do not lose this privilege. not to mention cleaning up beer cans, coffee cups and assorted other garbage left over from baseball or soccer groups. These parks were built with taxpayer money for the residents of our communities. Please reconsider going ahead with these new fines and regulations. There are many more pressing issues to be dealt with. I wish I could provide you with a method of making not only dog owners, but people in general of being more responsible. But I cannot. Your letter is too little, too late Editor, The News: Re: Poppycock on election timing (Letters, July 2). Eleanor Palis, what I call poppycock is your claim that all you’ve ever wanted to do is “be a part of making good decisions for kids.” That may have been your guiding ideology back in the day, but it has been lost along the way in your current actions as a member of School District No. 42’s board of trustees. You say that the battle being waged between the BCTF and the provincial government, “holding students, parents and teachers hostage,” is shameful. What is truly shameful is your board’s lack of action in this critical and crucial time. This truly is, as you put it, a “Goliath size fight,” which I believe requires Goliath-sized action. This is no time to feign neutrality (we all saw the pictures of several board members at the Liberal MLA victory party in May 2013); this is the time to take a loud and passionate stand for education and for the uncon-

stitutional actions of our government. Your board’s recent letter to the B.C. government is by far too little too late. Why wasn’t it done back in the spring, when your chair tearfully announced another $5 million in cuts in order to balance the budget, when we requested your help and support, when many other boards across B.C. did so? I am outraged and offended by your statement that our public rallies have been “obnoxious public displays” and your insinuation that our “being in front of the evening news cameras on a regular basis” has been a nuisance. On the contrary, those passionate displays of activism have been necessary and helped our cause in spreading awareness about the crucial issues in this fight: severe government underfunding, downloading of costs to school boards, and, of course, the slashing and burning of class size and composition language – issues on which your board has remained mum. You say that type of action is

“not your style.” It is certainly not. Your style is closed-door meetings, disingenuous consultation, and lack of transparency. Employees of School District No. 42 still have no idea why Laurie Meston, current acting superintendent and an awardwinning advocate for children with special needs and who has served our district for over a quarter of a century, was not deemed ‘suitable’ to become our next superintendent. I’d also like to know why your board was only one of four in all of B.C. that voted against a motion that would adopt a framework for bargaining that would have BCTF and BCPSEA (the government’s bargaining unit) working productively in negotiations. Wouldn’t that have been in the best interests of the students? Ms. Palis, you are delusional to think that MRTA members support your actions. I can’t think of one teacher in our district who is supportive of your board’s cowardly actions in the face of this Goliath. But don’t take my word for it. I encourage all MRTA mem-

bers, as well as our district’s CUPE members, to voice their opinion, whether or not they support the actions of our local school board in regards to government underfunding of education? Let it be clear, Ms. Palis: I am the MRTA. I am the BCTF. It is blatant Liberal propaganda and absolutely farcical to believe that teachers are caught in the middle of this dispute and were bullied into striking. That reeks of the same lambasting and demoralization of character in which you accuse MRTA president George Serra of engaging. We are this dispute. My local association and our provincial federation work for and speak for me. We direct the actions of our executives through surveys, consultation, and voting. We voted 86 per cent in favour of a full-scale strike because we had to take a stand against a dictatorial government who has brought education to the brink of collapse. What have you really done? Man stomps on sports car Man arrested, held in custody newsroom@mapleridgenews.com

A man who jumped up and down on the roof of a sports car Sunday has been arrested. RCMP said the 41-year-old Maple Ridge man was sitting on the roof of the vandalized Saleen Mustang when they arrived. RCMP got the call to 224th Street and North

Road at about 3 p.m. Police learned that the man had been jumping on top of the car, without provocation, just moments before. As soon as the man realized police were on scene, he got off the roof of the car and fled. Responding officers located the suspect and took him into custody. He was held in custody for a court appearance on Monday. A photo shows the roof of the vehicle sub-

Police would like to speak with a woman who had her purse snatched so she can help them identify the culprit. At about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23 a woman had her purse stolen from her grocery cart in the parking lot of the Meadowtown Shopping Mall in Pitt Meadows. She called for help, and other people in the mall parking lot came to her assistance, chasing the thief. He dropped the purse and fled the scene. The victim got her purse back and left the parking lot. After her departure,

Ridge Meadows RCMP located a person who may be responsible for the theft, and now need the victim to call them at 604-463-6251 and quote File No. 201415418.

Car flips on Harris An accident left an SUV flipped onto its roof in the middle of Harris Road on Monday. At about 7:45 p.m. there was a collision between a Honda CRV and a motorhome. The driver of the Honda was taken to hospital with injuries believed to be not life-threatening. Police say there is a possibility the driver of the SUV will be charged with impaired driving.

Motorcyclist injured A Maple Ridge motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital after a collision Sunday at Dewdney Trunk Road and 256th Street. According to police, the 59-year-old was eastbound on his motorcycle when he hit a vehicle making a left turn. An air ambulance was dispatched and landed at nearby Webster’s Corners elementary. The man’s injuries, while serious, were not believed to be lifethreatening.

‘Lots could happen’ Sockeye from front

In the four-year life cycle of sockeye, this year’s fish are returning spawners from the record 2010 run. That year, just as it appeared the sockeye run was on the verge of a collapse and a federal commission was established to investigate, an estimated 30 million salmon returned. It was the biggest run since 1913. The highest DFO estimate for this summer’s run is 72 million. Nener said a more conservative estimate this year would be a run of 22.8 million – still a healthy number. “There’s definitely a lot of optimism,” she added. The DFO has so far found that early runs have been a bit late, and slightly lower than expected. “It’s still a bit early to say anything. At this stage, there’s still a lot of things that could happen.” She confirmed that the DFO test fisheries have found that individual fish are physically smaller, but that is based on early returns. The current Chinook fishery has been great this year, which she said is an encouraging sign. Sport fishermen are allowed a daily limit of four chinook, wild or hatchery marked, and one may be greater than 50 centimetres. • For information about the sockeye salmon opening, see the website http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca.

A Traditional Chinese Medicine Centre on 223rd Street, near 119th Avenue, was broken into last week. Thieves smashed through the clinic’s tempered glass front on July 22 and grabbed a jar of coins from behind the front counter. Owner Ian Zhu, an acupuncturist, learned about the break-in when police called him at 7 a.m. “We’re fortunate they didn’t ran-

sack the place,” said Zhu. “They even left us $1.50.” A Ridge Meadows RCMP spokesperson said the break-in was witnessed by someone in the downtown area and reported to police. He said business break-ins are up slightly. There have been 101 reported commercial break-ins in Maple Ridge so far this calendar year, which is up by eight compared with last year. However, residential break-ins have dropped 21 per cent, and those at other types of uninhab-

ited buildings such as sheds and outbuildings are down 45 per cent in the past year. He noted that the arrest of one offender can have a significant impact on local break-ins. The clinic has been operating since 1994 and hasn’t been a target of thieves in more than a decade. “It’s been pretty good in the past 20 years,” said Zhu, who noted that the stolen change was mistakenly left in sight. “This seems more like a crime of opportunity.”

AS SEEN ON ARKETPLA CE C’S M Thanks Bruce I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optometrist. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value.

Our landscape is changing.

‘Enhancements’ Traffic from front

“That’s a plus that everyone is grateful for,” said Caros, relieved to see impatient drivers have stopped tail-gating residents and pulling dangerous manoeuvres to pass cars on the street. But Caros hopes the district comes up with a more comprehensive plan to not only slow down and

divert traffic, but also enhance the heritage features of Shady Lane. There’s been discussion about applying for a heritage grant from the federal government. Residents would also like the stretch to be more pedestrianfriendly. “The traffic in Maple Ridge is not going to get less over time,” said Caros.

Pitt townhome project on hold The 274-unit townhouse development proposed for Pitt Meadows is on hold until design plans are modified to reflect concerns by council and residents. Increased traffic and parking issues, the proposed number of units and access being limited to Sutton Avenue exclusively were among the primary concerns identified in feedback forms submitted at a public hearing held last year. “People are very concerned about how much density this

BIGGER

development represents,” Coun. Gwen O’Connell said at last week’s regular meeting. City staff initially recommended the rezoning application for 19451 Sutton Avenue be given first and second reading and that a second public hearing be held. Council said no to the recommendations and asked staff to work with developers to update the proposal. The parcel of land in question, once owned by the city and now the property of Onni Group, would have to be rezoned from general agriculture to comprehensive development.

and math. She has worked with the Coquitlam school district since 2011 as a high school math and science teacher, both in an on-call and contract teacher capacity. Beckett says she will bring a needed element of change to Maple Ridge by using her education and experience.

Working with youth and discussing issues with co-workers, parents and school administrators has given her firsthand knowledge and experience of what families need. She added that her heart is in this community, and her only goal is to see it thrive and become a greater one to call home.

Maple Ridge Music Society hosts three opera performers Aug. 12 B y S teph Trou ghton newsroom@mapleridgenews.com

Opera is not a typical musical genre associated with rural communities. But in Maple Ridge and towns scattered across the prairie provinces, it will be the choice of music for three operatic performers who spent their childhoods in the latter. Maple Ridge music instructor, director and conductor Rayne Beveridge says he and fellow performers, Courtney Bridge and Ryan Goetz, want to give back to the communities that have championed their careers.

“We understand the majority of people are not operatic aficionados.” Rayne Beveridge, singer

Born and raised in Airdrie, Alberta, Bridge is a soprano in the UBC Opera Masters program. She has performed in more than a dozen operas, including as a soloist for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Goetz, Beveridge’s accompanist, is a Saskatchewan-born vocal coach and award-winning pianist who completed his masters degree in piano perfor-

mance with distinction at the University of British Columbia in 2013. Kicking off the two-week Western Shakedown Classical Concert Tour will be an Aug. 12 performance at Westacres (23575 – 124 Ave.), home of the Maple Ridge Music Society. For 1.5 hours, audiences will Bridge see scenes from famous operas such as The Marriage of Figaro, as well as renowned classical works. Beveridge explains he and his musical partners like to make the concert experience interactive for their audience. “We understand the majority of people are not operatic aficionados.” Rather than use a screen with subtext, the trio will take the Goetz time to explain their characters and engage the audience. “People enjoy it a lot more if they understand what is going on,” says Beveridge. He was first told by a coach at age 14 that, with his baritone voice, he should study opera. During his years in Maple Ridge, Beveridge has coached individuals and directed eight choirs and five musical theatre programs. He is confident the Aug. 12 show will be well received, as a similar performance was held at Westacres last year and response from the 40-person audience was positive. • Tickets for the event are $15. It was a memorable week for Ridge Meadows BMX. While the club was hosting the provincial championships at its track in Pitt Meadows, two of its brightest stars were winning medals at the world championships. Alex Tougas took a gold medal at the world championships in the Dutch city Rotterdam, and his teammate from Ridge, Tory Nyhaug, won silver. Back at their home track, many of the club members were winning provincial titles. Ridge BMX hosted the B.C. championships on Saturday, then a B.C. Cup race on Sunday at the Pitt Meadows race track. The B.C. Cup race was the seventh in an eight-race series that will wrap up in Abbotsford in August. There were numerous top-three finishes from members of the Ridge Meadows BMX club in both events. On Saturday, there were 154 entries in a number of difference classes. Jared Ennis of Maple Ridge was the provincial champion in the junior male category. Erin Kinnie finished third in the elite female class. Nate Berkheimer finished second in the elite male category. In a large group of 19 riders in the 5-6 male class, Xavier Murray took first, and Dallen BreretonStiles second. In the age 5-7 female class, Cayden Libby won in a field of five riders, Kamryn Howlett was second and Elana Knight third. Bryne Harvey won the age 8 female class.

Burrards stuck in third, face Lakers in playoffs

We’re still in your neighbourhood.

Burnaby will have home advantage in best of seven The Maple Ridge Burrards are consigned to third place in the Western Lacrosse Association after the Burnaby Lakers solidified their hold on second with two weekend wins. Burnaby improved its record to 11-6-0, for 22 points, after upsetting the first-place Victoria Shamrocks 9-6 on Friday night, then blasting the hapless Nanaimo Timbermen 12-5 on Saturday. That gives the Lakers home advantage against the Burrards for the opening round of the playoffs. Whether that is an advantage at all

is debatable – the Lakers are road warriors, with an 8-1 record in away games, and a losing 3-5 record at home. The Burrards are 9-7-1, for 19 points with just one game remaining. The fourth place team will be the New Westminster Salmonbellies (8-9), who will face the first-place Shamrocks (13-2-2) in the first round of the playoffs. The Burrards wrap up their regular season schedule tomorrow (Thursday) in New West, with a 7:45 p.m. game at Queens Park. The playoffs will be a best-of-seven affair, beginning Aug. 6 in Burnaby, with dates for Aug. 9, 12 and 16 in Maple Ridge.
