Susan Greig is sad and perplexed by a break-in at her 100 Braid Street Studios on July 18. Someone broke into the facility that just opened in June and provides space for up to 20 artists. It’s evident they knew what they were after. Greig said high quality paints, spray paints, brushes and equipment were taken. She estimates the art tools and supplies stolen are worth more than $10,000. “It’s a whole lot of stuff that’s good. They were extremely picky. “Who was to know there were people out there that would steal art supplies.” They were not only picky they were very respectful, said Greig. Even to the point of trying to bend the bars back into place on the window where the thief or thieves got in. Artwork was left in place untouched. That’s why Greig is so baffled. To her it’s obvious there’s an artist who feels it’s all right to steal from other artists. She speculated it might be graffiti artists or taggers, but she isn’t sure about that either. “I honestly don’t know what kind of individuals would do this. It seems very strange,” she said. please see SuppORT, A4

The contest runs until August 30 and is part of the Library’s Summer Reading program for adults called What Are You Reading? Eight amazing book covers have been selected by the library staff as worthy of being in the contest. Each week a book cover is voted off the wall, until there is only one survivor. Be judgmental. Texas group to headline Uptown Live Grant Granger
ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com
The Bright Light Social Hour has played all 48 states in the contiguous United States, Mexico City and the Plains of Abraham. Soon the Texas band will be able to add Uptown New Westminster to the list. It will be one of the feature acts during the Uptown Live street festival Sunday, Aug. 10. Bright Light crosses more genres than Uptown has crosswalks. It’s been labeled psychedelic rock, blues rock, indie, dance-punk, neo soul and a few other hyphenated monikers. The band was conceived 10 years ago on the campus of Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas just outside of Austin. That’s where guitarist/ singer Curtis Roush met bass player Jack O’Brien. They liked the same kind of “skronky” music, as Roush calls it, so they put together a band. It was a bit hard core and noisy and
involved different styles. Other members and styles have come and gone but Roush and O’Brien are still around. So is the name. “We’ve just dragged the band name through a lot of styles,” Roush said wryly during a phone interview. The one thing the band isn’t is the stereotypical Texan country-and-western band. But that doesn’t mean the state hasn’t had any influence on their music. “We eventually learned to tap into our Texan heritage, even our music now and our first album in 2010, those kinds of influences come in like blues and slide guitar riffs,” said Roush. “At one time we were contrarian, but now we’re quite comfortable with our identities as Texans and with our music.” The album earned the band an unprecedented six awards at the 2011 Austin Music Awards. After that they hit the road playing more than 400 shows across North America.
Bright Light Social Hour will headline this year’s Uptown Live festival on Sunday, Aug. 10. The band has opened for Aerosmith in the past.
“We love going to different places and exposing ourselves to different culture,” said Roush. In July 2012, Bright Light opened for Aerosmith in a concert on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City. The site of the most historically significant battle in Canadian history was a strange place to be
for a bunch of Texans. “It really felt otherworldly coming from a sprawling hot Texas town,” said Roush. “It was a real special experience, never been at anything like it on that kind of scale.” The band has cut down on its previously grueling tour schedule these days, but still get around. They were recently at a festival
in Victoria and after New West they’ll be going to another in Tofino. Uptown Live will be an opportunity to rock in an urban city’s epicentre. “We crave those shows where we have a real close connection and are feeding off crowd energy,” said Roush. Uptown Live’s other headline act will be Five
Alarm Funk, a 12-piece Vancouver band. This will be the third installment of Uptown Live. The first two followed the annual Hyack International Parade in May. But this year, the Uptown Business Association deciding to go it alone and moved the date to the summer in search of more reliable weather. There will be three music stages. Five Alarm Funk (5 p.m.) and Bright Light Social Hour (6 p.m.) will appear on the Westminster Savings performance stage on Sixth Street in front of Westminster Centre. The festival also features a kids zone and plenty of food trucks. It starts at 11 a.m. • The festival has announced a partnership with Vancity Credit Union, Recycling Alternative and Green Chair Recycling to keep the event’s garbage out of the landfill. The goal is to divert 94 per cent of all the waste created by Uptown Live to recycling or composting.

“The proposed truck route changes would force truck traffic onto already-congested adjacent routes, or to make costly and inefficient detours, leading to increased emissions, fuel usages and risk of crashes as exposure risks,” said president and CEO Louise Yako in her submission to TransLink. New Westminster also asked that Ewen Avenue east of Derwent Way in Queensborough be removed as a truck route. The TransLink board asked the city to provide more analysis and stakeholder input before making a decision on the request.

But Coquitlam transportation planning manager Catherine Mohoruk particularly objected to removal of that route. In her submission to TransLink, Mohoruk said trucks need to be able to get to the Pattullo Bridge during afternoon peak periods. She also said eliminating the routes will increase congestion at the Brunette interchange on Highway 1 and along the Brunette/Lougheed Highway corridor. The B.C. Trucking Association said removing the routes without providing alternatives would be detrimental to goods movement.

Truck traffic on East Eighth is noisy and dirty, according to the president of the Massey/Victory Heights Residents Association. Jason Lesage said many residents wipe soot from their patio furniture before sitting down to enjoy summer evenings. Lesage said during afternoon rush hour there’s always a long line of Pattullo-bound trucks on East Eighth waiting to turn left onto McBride Boulevard. “It really needs to be diverted somewhere else. It’s a little disappointing to hear TransLink has made that decision,” said Lesage.

morning about the power pole at the foot of Sixth Street hitting the top level of the parkade. Front Street was closed to all traffic during the morning rush hour, but was reopened shortly afterward. The Front Street access road, however, remained closed as crews worked to restore the power. Carle said initial indications from crews was an internal fire in the pole was responsible. He said an aluminum bracket at the top appeared to have had some leakage that had tracked down to the transformers. Crews reported the pole was hollow because it had been doing a slow burn inside of it. “It’s been there for a while. It’s all internal not external,” said Carle. Crews will be working on relocating the power the pole provided to other sources. “We’re sitting here coming up with a game plan. I think we’ve got it down pat,” said Carle. Most of the businesses on Front Street, as well as some on Columbia, were without power until mid-afternoon. However, three businesses remained without power until Friday evening. twitter.com/lonegrangerbnw

NEWSLEADER’S VIEW:
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Driving by example
LAST WEEK:
A recent ICBC survey found many parents are passing along poor driving habits to their teenagers. And only about a third of them seem to be aware of the impact their bad behaviour is having. Whether it’s speeding, failing to come to a complete stop or not properly concentrating on the task at hand, for some, the rules of the road tend to grow a little hazy over the years. And the more comfortable we get behind the wheel, the more corners we tend to cut. Most of the time it works out. But for young drivers, who in all likelihood still occasionally flip on the wipers when they mean to signal a turn, there is an overwhelming amount of information coming at them fast. Add to that, heavy traffic, aggressive and impatient drivers and a seemingly endless succession of construction projects to create stress and confusion, and new drivers have enough to deal with. “Driving is particularly risky for new drivers because they lack experience. Not only are they more prone to crash but on average, 18 per cent of crashes involving young drivers result in an injury or fatality,” the insurance corporation points out. Allowing teens to start out with bad habits passed down — however inadvertently — is like setting them up to fail. ICBC offers tips for parents as they prepare their teens for one of the (simultaneously) greatest freedoms and responsibilities they’ll ever know. Most important, they say, parents should remove themselves from an emotionally charged situation and allow an expert to provide instruction. Whatever the cost, it’s worth it to know you’re giving them their best shot at success. And, of course, it never hurts to set a good example. —Langley Times/Black Press

THIS WEEK: Can parents teach their teens to drive just as well as a driver’s school? Vote at www.newwestnewsleader.com
In defence of younger drivers VICTORIA – A recent column on the B.C. government’s decision to raise speed limits on portions of rural highways excited numerous comments from readers. Some questioned my suggestion that today’s new drivers are worse because they spend their formative years staring at screens in the back seat instead of looking out the window and grasping the grim physics of the real world. There is no doubt that B.C.’s graduated licensing system for new drivers is more difficult than what my generation faced. Those vehicle stickers with the “L” (for learner, or as teens prefer “loser”) and “N” (for novice, or in teen-speak “nerd”) have been around since 1998. The two steps make getting a full driver’s licence a longer, more difficult and expensive process. Statistics provided by ICBC show what new drivers are up against. First there is the written “knowledge test” to obtain a learner’s permit. From 2004 to 2008, more than half of applicants failed in their first

attempt. Things improved in subsequent years, with a 46-percent failure rate in 2009 declining to 42 per cent by 2013. The first road test is required to go from “L” to “N” and it seems sufficiently harsh. The failure rate has been consistently around 47 per cent in the past six years. More practice and another $35 are required to try again. Students fare better on the second road test, where the failure rate is consistently 21-22 per cent for the past decade. ICBC reports that in the first three years of the graduated licence program, the new driver crash rate dropped by 16 per cent. In 2003 the required learner and novice period were extended, and restrictions on the novice stage were increased. New driver crashes fell by another 28 per cent.

Those restrictions include the number of passengers and a “zero tolerance” for alcohol. Impaired crash and injury statistics aren’t available for drivers in the graduated licence program, only fatalities. They grew as more new drivers were enrolled in the new system, to a high of 24 in 2007, but that declined to 14 by 2012. There will always be young people who drive impaired, speed or make other fatal errors. But it’s difficult to argue that today’s system in B.C. is lenient. Minister Todd Stone to raise speed limits. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall said the research is clear that higher speeds increase the risk and severity of incidents. Then there is the government’s own position, articulated in a road safety strategy released last year by Attorney General Suzanne Anton. “Research is conclusive that at higher speeds, more people are killed and injured in the traffic system,” it states. “At lower speeds, fewer are killed and injured as a direct result of the safety buffer that lowered speeds create.” The strategy notes that new technologies such as adaptive cruise control are becoming available. B.C. is also testing electronic highway speed limit signs that change with weather and traffic conditions. Next comes self-driving vehicle systems, so drivers will be able to check their phones again. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

$50 BILLION IN ECONOMIC BENEFITS AT RISK ________ The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce supports a research study that concludes that $50 billion in economic development along the banks of the Lower Fraser River is at risk unless senior levels of governments act now to address serious issues facing the river. The report titled, ‘The Economic Importance of the Lower Fraser River’, was released by the 13 Chambers of Commerce in the Lower Fraser River region including the The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce. “This report found that Fraser River communities such as New Westminster would face catastrophic impacts in the event of flooding,” said Stephen Bruyneel, Executive Board Member. “This report paints a very clear picture that, with risks of this magnitude, our communities need to partner with government and major stakeholders to find solutions now.”

B.C.’s road to adventure Sue Kernaghan Contributor
Skirting a glacial fjord before climbing into the Coast Mountains, the Sea-to-Sky Highway between Vancouver and Whistler is one of the world’s great road trips. You can drive the route in less than two hours, but why rush it? Along the way are ocean views, jagged peaks, thick forests, evocative historic sites and some of the best outdoor adventure on the planet. And that’s just for starters. The new Sea to Sky Gondola, opened in May just south of Squamish, can whisk you high into the alpine to see this landscape from a whole new angle. The gondola (actually

You can also explore 30 kilometres (19 miles) of hiking trails, ranging from strollerfriendly walks to backcountry treks, learn about the local Stawamus First Nation’s heritage along the interpretive Spirit Trail or just soak up the views over lunch at the Summit Lodge. While you’re up there, watch for climbers on neighbouring rock faces. Rock climbers speak in hushed tones about the

The province has adjusted its new minimum prices for alcohol in the wake of criticism over the rollout of new rules allowing “happy hour” discounts. A new category for draft beer creates a minimum charge of $12 for a 60-ounce pitcher – down from $15 previously announced – or $0.20 per ounce for large volumes over 50 ounces instead of $0.25, which still applies to smaller glasses and pints. The new regulations let bars and restaurants charge lower prices for selective times or occasions, but forced some low-price establishments to raise prices to match the new minimums. That will still be the case for pints in some locales – bars that had charged less than $5 must raise their prices to that minimum for 20 ounces. The province has also increased the minimum price for spirits from $2 to $3 per ounce. Addictions experts had called for higher minimum pricing to reduce health and safety risks to drinkers. Alliance of Beverage Licensees executive director Jeff Guignard supported the spirit price increase in the interests of public safety, noting a patron previously could have bought five singleounce shots for $10. But he said the lower minimum beer pitcher price of $12 against a minimum 20-ounce pint price of $5 may encourage over-drinking and intoxication. Provincial regulations limit a single serving of beer to 24 ounces, so pitchers can’t be ordered by a lone patron.
