Boats strewn along lakeshore BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

High winds during a storm last Friday resulted in approximately 15 boats coming loose from moorings and being beached along

the south shore of Sylvan Lake. RCMP issued a plea Saturday morning for owners to check their boats as they’d had to tie off some of the boats and were having trouble contacting owners. The boats were strewn on the shoreline from 40th Street to Petro Beach. Several had taken on a lot of water. “If the wind changes direction today, some of the unsecured vessels will be washed back out into the lake and become dangerous hazards for other users of the lake and property as well,” said Cpl. James Allemekinders in a news release. “Please keep in mind, the owner of a

boat that causes damage to other people’s property or the environment will be held liable for damages.” Allemekinders also reminded boat owners of legal requirements under the Canada Shipping Act and Small Vessel Regulations. “It is law for you to licence (register) your boat with Transport Canada. The licence number should appear on either side of the bow of the boat and this number is how police or other enforcement agencies are able to track down boat owners.”

Results of a storm from last week.

Decades of assistance recognized with Legion award BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Years of involvement of Memorial Presbyterian Church members and ministers was recognized by Sylvan Lake’s Royal Canadian Legion with presentation of a Friendship Award during Sunday’s church service. Joe Brink, a Sylvan resident and vice president with Alberta-Northwest Territories Command of The Royal Canadian Legion and Gordon Graham, first vice president of the Sylvan Lake branch made the presentation. Brink, a veteran, served about 15 years with 3 Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry including two tours in Bosnia and two in Afghanistan. Following his last tour he was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross. Following is the award citation read by Graham during the presentation: Memorial Presbyterian Church has been involved in one form or other with the Sylvan Lake branch of The Royal Canadian Legion ever since the branch received its charter in 1946. The subsequent friendship and co-operation is no coincidence since the church

and the branch are only a block apart; the church being just across the street from Memorial Park and the Cenotaph. Every year, a number of the branch’s events and activities are, and have for decades, been supported or participated in by members of the congregation. The ministers of this church, Rev. John Yoos, Rev. Bob Wilson, and currently Rev. Jin Woo Kim, have collectively served as padre or chaplain for the branch for close to 50 years. In addition to this appointment, they have also served as masters of ceremony for countless branch functions and have played an integral role in developing and participating in Remembrance Day services and other memorial tributes throughout the year. The Men’s Group from the church looked after landscape maintenance of Memorial Park for years, long before the town took it over. The Ladies Evening Guild helped raise funding to repair the base of the Cenotaph and they put in the flower beds until the town took over maintenance of Memorial Park. On two occasions in the last year alone, the Ladies Evening Guild, unreservedly and without notice, opened their kitchen and hall to the branch Ladies’

Auxiliary, permitting them to meet their bookings, when events conspired against them and evicted them from their own kitchen. One of the most significant events that this church is recognized for is their support and participation in the Remembrance Day community service. Initially, this service was held outdoors at the Cenotaph with the padre or chaplain, a minister of Memorial Presbyterian Church, in the lead, cold or not, mostly cold. The choir and pianist have led the music each year. With the Town of Sylvan Lake Multiplex now the venue, the church is loaning a piano

to provide musical accompaniment and the pianist and the choir are still part of the deal. The above are only a few of the numerous and unreserved forms of support or assistance that one would receive from a good neighbour — or even better — a good friend. In recognition of the significant and historical contribution made in assisting Sylvan Lake Branch No. 212 achieve the objectives of The Royal Canadian Legion, Memorial Presbyterian Church is presented with The Royal Canadian Legion Friendship Award.

Very grateful to good samaritans who came to rescue Dear Editor, My heartfelt, sincere gratitude to the group of people who came to the assistance of my ten year old grandson, Chase, saving him from potentially drowning on Tuesday, July 22 off the pier. I kept my eyes on him while he was swimming with his friend in the designated beach swimming area and watched him go up the steps to the pier. Within five minutes I walked over to the pier to check on them and my grandson thought it would be fun to drop a cardboard box in the water off the north side of the pier and jump in. The wind quickly pushed him quite a distance away, too far for him to swim back. Three men saw what happened and swam out to him, one man turned around and swam back as he realized the distance was too much for him. Two young men reached Chase and held on to him as the box began to sink. Fortunately a group of people in a motor boat saw the situation and provided assistance by picking them up and

priority when it comes to things to complain about. It is true that education and health care are constant bones of contention, and rightly so, but, it seems, as is the case with most things, always there are those who are worse off. Even though we live through what seems like endless winters, suffer through drought or high water levels, depending on the whims of mother nature, overall, things are good. But, still there are some things that simply shouldn’t be messed with. Things like the wild rose on our license plates. It needs to stay there. Taking it away is like removing the Flames from Calgary or the Oilers from Edmonton. Albertans need to feel proud that they live in wild rose country. They need to remember that in spite of governments that change with the wind, making promises too easily broken, no apparent ceiling on the price of food and gas and an economy that fluctuates without warning, some things remain constant and good. Like flowers. Like the wild rose!

The young ladies’ Services Personnel Welcoming Committee held their second “welcome home” function on Tuesday evening, in the form of a picnic and a bonfire. A party of over 30 gathered at the rendezvous on the beach, and pleasantly spent the

bringing them all back to the pier safe and sound. I was so distressed that all I could do was feebly shake their hands and mumble a thank you, as well as to those on the boat. However, I truly thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for what you did, as I believe that you saved my grandson’s life. Every summer when Chase visits me from Coquitlam, B.C., he takes swimming lessons but as a ten year old he did not possess the strength to swim back to the pier against the strong wind. Unfortunately, the box was left on the pier by a large group of teenagers who were there earlier using the boxes as makeshift boats. I’m glad you had fun, however it was a big mistake not to take all the boxes when you left. Life is short and very precious. I believe Chase learned a valuable lesson that day and I’m very grateful for all the good samaritans’ that came to his rescue! Patricia Granik, Sylvan Lake evening in a sing-song and social. Electricity costing us more; some looking at own generation Dear Editor, Government would hope you believe your power — electrical — is a regulated system. According to the Calgary Herald, the price in Alberta has swung from three cents to 30 cents per kwh. That is, of course, based on the Enron model of supply and demand. By choking supply you can demand what you want. Alberta electricity supply is now sold all over North America — deregulated. So if they have a heat wave in Texas and we have a -40˚C month we have to bid for our electricity. In my last letter, I complained about having to buy power, and my costs. Recently Imperial Oil decided to run its Strathcona plant off the grid. They are building their own generation supply. According to a news release they can save 75 per cent on electrical costs. That’s common, Devon has always had their own generator. Edmonton built

Genesee power plant. I have investigated alternate generation capacities. Sick of paying $3,000 electrical bills I have found a natural gas 50kw farm generator for $5,000 new. My costs will return to three cents or less. In my research I have found many micro generator companies that supply little towns in Alberta. Maybe that’s the new direction — can’t trust the government so grow your own power. I think that’s pathetic personally — that the system we built has been sold away leaving us a captive slaves if you agree and comply. To survive you have to abandon the system that was built to protect you. And of course you will still need to keep paying Hathaway a nine per cent premium per year because that’s the law. Leslieville Antique Days returning BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS With Leslieville Antique Days just days away, organizers feel this year’s event is shaping up to be a good one. Though it won’t necessarily feature any new

events, the tradition that’s been running now for close to 40 years promises to be as thrilling as ever, to both antiques enthusiasts and visitors alike. Hosted by Central Alberta Antique and Model Club this Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 2 and 3), it has something for “pretty much everybody”, according to club director Vernon Mosset.

“There’s homemade cinnamon buns, a flea market, a tractor pull, a threshing demonstration, and displays, of course,” he said. Among those displays will be everything and anything from vintage cars to old tractors and farming equipment. Most of the club’s members come from the area between Rocky Mountain House and Red

Watering of lawns, gardens, yards or grounds between the hours of 12 pm and 7 pm is prohibited. Customers with new sod may water daily, for up to 6 weeks, excluding during the prohibited hours. FAÇADE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM The Façade Improvement Program is designed to encourage retail and commercial building owners to invest in facade renovations and storefront upgrades by providing grants to cover a portion of renovation costs. Grants will be awarded to eligible applicants to cover up to 50% of the façade renovation costs, up to a maximum dollar value. The 2014 grant program will provide an incentive for 50th Street/Centennial Street buildings to complete façade upgrades that contribute to the Waterfront Area, by creating a more interesting and appealing street environment that attracts people and new businesses. The program is intended to: • Enhance the appearance and charm of commercial areas while making streets a more attractive, safe, and interesting place to walk. • Help building owners attract and retain tenants. • Contribute to the quality of life of residents, workers, and visitors. • Promote the marketability of the local business area. • Build civic pride among the local business community and residents of the Town of Sylvan Lake. Funding cannot be utilized for maintenance projects. Applications for grants must enhance the pedestrian experience and contribute to the character of the area. For the first year, the program will be run as a pilot project that will focus on a small geographic area to assist downtown business revitalization. This pilot project coincides with the Town’s plans to complete the 50th Street Redevelopment Plan Design in 2014, with street reconstruction slated for 2015. At the end of the first year, the program will be evaluated on its success and any changes that are necessary will be made.

Townsend successful in Stampede show’s Angus class BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Though not the Grand Champion prize he was aiming for, Wacey Townsend’s Angus Champion award earned at the Calgary Stampede UFA Steer Classic earlier this month is still “very rewarding”, he feels. “It’s a great award,” he said. “It’s not the one that I wanted, but you’ve got to

take what you can get.” Townsend, 14, participated in the July 12 show’s Angus class, as he felt it was the one in which his steer would stand the best chance of winning. His success earned him $1,000 in cash, which he plans to invest in another steer. That financial reward, he feels, was merited by countless hours of hard work he’s put into preparing the steer over the past several months. “I’ve had my calf since February, so

from February to July, it’s been in the barn every day from six o’clock in the morning until nine o’clock at night,” he said. Townsend participates in shows all over Canada and the United States, and says he has travelled everywhere from “Houston, British Columbia, to Houston, Texas”. It was along those travels he picked up his awardwinning steer. “I show all over the United States, and I heard from another person that this guy had a really good steer, so I got in contact with him and said I want that steer whatever it costs,” he said. “You never know what you’re gonna get; he might look really good as a baby, and then maybe when he gets big, he might not look so good. “I just had a good feeling about this one all the way along. He was one of a kind.” Travelling from show to show keeps Townsend steadily occupied not just throughout the summer months, but for a large part of the year. His family owns and operates Lone Star Angus near Camp Woods west of Sylvan Lake, and often travels to shows with him. His older sister, Dakota, 18, is also part of the showing circuit. The siblings are sixth generation ranchers, and Wacey Townsend has plans to extend the family tradition even further by one day purchasing a farm in the United States and “becoming one of the biggest steer

THE COLD SHOULDER

Love of reading

- Susan Samson has joined a growing organization with a unique goal — to provide an easy to use book exchange. The Little Free Library is accommodated in a house at the end of her driveway. She said she began the project because she lives in a community where residents are somewhat seasonal and may not be library partrons. The goal is to build a sense of community while promoting a love for reading. “My family are avid readers,” she said. People are invited to take a book or leave a book — it’s free. “This belongs to the community,” Samson said. “Anybody is invited to peruse the collection and if there’s something of interest help yourself.” The library is located at 338 Marina Bay Place. Samson she saw an article on the concept in a Calgary newspaper and when looking on the internet found it’s an idea that’s gaining momentum in larger centres. (littlefreelibrary.org/) STEVE DILLS

Submitted by Jim Rilling, Associate Pastor at Alliance Community Church, Sylvan Lake “After we have had a fight my wife can give the world’s coldest shoulder. Once I kissed her there and my lips stuck.” Have you ever had “the cold shoulder” treatment? How do you respond? Probably, the first thing to do is to try remember you are valuable no matter what or how you have been treated. You have certain giftings and abilities that make you valuable. Furthermore you have been designed by God and “He don’t make no junk”. You are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). You are made in the imaged of God (Genesis 1:27) and called for His

purposes. If you have personally embraced what Jesus Christ did for you on the cross you have experienced “a taste of the love of God”. So why not just revel in His smile for a while. Let it bring healing to your soul that overcomes “the cold shoulder” feeling. As you revel in God’s love for you in Christ, you will be better prepared to endure hurtful words and actions (Philippians 2:1-4). As a matter of fact you will have the chance to “enter into the sufferings of Christ” (I Peter 4:12,13). Indeed the mocking and scourging he received was more than “a cold shoulder”. May you have a great day, regardless of the words or attitudes that come your way.

Terms of reference approved for county agricultural plan BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Lacombe County councillors have approved terms of reference for the county’s agricultural plan, allowing for discussions regarding the plan’s imple-

mentation to now take place. The terms were presented to council during a Committee of the Whole meeting in early June. Several additions and changes subsequently requested by council are reflected in the approved document. The aim of the plan is “to contrib-

ute to the sustainability of the agricultural industry and ensure that agriculture has a voice in future land use planning and policy development within the county”, according to the terms of reference. The county also hopes the plan will increase public awareness of the agricultural industry’s importance to the county. The next steps of the plan’s implementation will be discussed at a Committee of the Whole meeting in early August. A budget of $50,000 has been set for development and implementation. Councillors approved the document during their June 26 regular meeting.

GWENDOLYN (GWENNE) IVA FLORENCE REDMOND (1943 - 2014) Our beloved wife, mother, sister and grandmother passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Hospice, July 22, 2014 at the age of 70 years. She is survived by her husband, Joe of Sylvan Lake; daughter, Raylene (Rob) McWade of Sylvan Lake and their children, Sean (Meghan) and Samantha (Travis); daughter, Lynne Redmond-Dorcas of Airdrie and her children Joel, Brett and Braden Jepson; daughter, Jennifer McCulloch of Didsbury and her children Carson and Rowan; her brother, John (Gale) Carswell of Lillooet, BC; sister-in-law, Sharon (Carol) Redmond of Nanaimo, BC as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gwenne was predeceased by her parents; nephew, Rick Carswell; and son-in-law, Steve McCulloch. Gwenne was born August 11, 1943 in Whitehorse, to Richard (Dick) and Daisy Carswell, long-time Yukon residents. She attended the University of Victoria and Victoria’s Jubilee Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for Dr. Buchan in Whitehorse and the Didsbury Nursing Home. Growing up she enjoyed participating in many sports such as curling and basketball. In 1963 she was honored to be Miss Sourdough Rendevous Queen and represented the Territory as Miss Yukon. Her love of sports continued into adulthood with slowpitch ball, skiing and bowling, which she had the honor of participating at the Alberta Winter Games in 1980. Gwenne was a very active volunteer and dedicated time to many organizations including Didsbury Light Horse, American Saddlebred Horse Association of Alberta and the David Thompson Health Region. Gwenne and Joe were married in Whitehorse in 1965 and subsequently lived in Calgary, Devon, Didsbury, Abbotsford, Red Deer and Sylvan Lake. Despite being a Yukoner, she loved the mountains and prairies of Alberta and felt she was at home here. Joe and Gwenne were proud parents/grandparents and supported the many endeavors and activities of their family. She was a long time member of the Alliance Community Church in Sylvan Lake and her friends and family find great comfort in knowing that she is with her Heavenly Father. Her family thanks the dedicated medical professionals who were so caring, particularly Dr. Neil Stewart of Red Deer, Dr. Easaw and team of the Tom Baker Cancer Center, the Home Care staff in Sylvan Lake and the very special staff and volunteers of the Red Deer Hospice. A Celebration of Life for Gwenne was held at the Alliance Community Church, 4404 - 47 Avenue, Sylvan Lake, AB, Friday July 25, 2014 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gwenne’s memory to the Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Avenue, Red Deer, AB T4R-3S6 www.reddeerhospice.com .

Comedic flare in one-act play performed at Dickson Store Museum BY SHARON LIGHTBOWN SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The fifth annual Sunday Afternoon at Dickson Store Museum was once again a successful event. It was a hot sunny afternoon, and approximately 50 people came to enjoy it. If only summer was longer it might be a bit easier not to overlap events: it was also a Taste of Markerville on the weekend. This year the plot of the one-act play was about a pet rabbit getting into Sophia’s (Sharon Lightbown’s) garden. She is not particularly happy with her husband Tom (Fred Pedersen) because this is not the first time part of his menagerie of animals has eaten her garden. The script had a comedic flare, and the music and poetry followed the theme of the play. Letters written to Grandma and Grandpa are always a huge hit. All of the above produced laughter from the audience. There was some audience participation when they were encouraged to sing along with Margie Miller, Robbie Olson, Fred Pedersen and Sharon Lightbown. The accompanist, Virginia Pedersen, made a wonderful Stompin’ Tom when she played the number Poor Poor Farmer. Everyone in attendance had a great time and some thanked us for bringing back memories of their childhood. This event has no modern technology or bells or whistles and people say that is one of the reasons they enjoy it so much; other people in attendance thanked us for hosting this event and said to make sure they know when it is happening next year. The event ended with coffee and goodies

Sharon Lightbown (Sophia) gave Fred Pedersen (Tom) some trouble after his rabbit got in the garden during a one-act play performed at Dickson Store Museum Sunday. It wasn’t the first time one of his menagerie of animals ate the garden. SUBMITTED which included Danish pastry; one lady remarked that that was the best pastry she had ever eaten and asked where she could get the recipe. People sat around talking and laughing with neighbors, old friends, and new acquaintances before departing. The next event at The Dickson Store Museum is the Teddy Bear Picnic on Thursday, August 7, more details on the web page or Facebook.

Taste of Markerville had tempting variety Helping to prepare the long table, which was set for over 100 people on Markerville’s Main Avenue in front of Fensala Hall, were Kelly Johnston and Dean Doll while Janet Doll adjusted a vase of flowers. STEVE DILLS PHOTOS

An enticing aroma rose from pork loin roasts being prepared for the long table dinner at Taste of Markerville Saturday evening. The $125 a plate dinner featured a delicious selection of food prepared by six Alberta chefs — food such as red fife and flax seed sourdough, rhubarb marshmallow with cucumber, crispy prosciutto and salted almonds, English pea gazpacho, cucumber and farmstead cheese, nasturtium and lemon verbena, chicken pot pie. Main courses included sous vide pork belly, lamb ham, grilled beef tenderloin and jerk marinated and charcoal roast pork loin. Dessert included strawberries, sichuan peppercorn shortbread, cracked green sichuan pepper, miso anglaise and Fiasco Strawberry Stracciatella Sorbetto. Several wines were also paired with the meals.
