Strike savings will assist parents Government announces new compensation plan By Nei l Corbe tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
If the teachers’ strike continues into September, the provincial government has promised parents financial help with their daycare costs. Finance Minister Mike De Jong announced Thursday that parents of children under 13 will be eligible for $40 per day, per child, to help with daycare costs or tutors. The government will fund this program with money saved on wages during the strike, which has been calculated at approximately $12 million per day. Parents can utilize that money to acquire tutoring for their children or explore other educational opportunities, De Jong said. See Strike, 5

Dog killed in Pitt Meadows attack Owners agree to put pit bull down By Nei l Corbe tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
Greg Wyatt watched in horror as the pit bull cross came out of nowhere, grabbed his Yorkshire Terrier behind the head and started shaking its body like a rag. Wyatt yelled. He emptied almost an entire can of dog spray at the attacker, and finally punched the dog
in the head until his hand could take no more. But he couldn’t save little Tucker. It happened on a regular early morning walk in his Osprey Village neighbourhood. He lives in the Shoreline strata development, and the attacking dog’s owner, Jeff Slater, is a neighbour who lives in nearby Kingfisher. “We’re heartbroken over it,” said Wyatt, speaking for himself and his wife Judy. “He was almost a neighbourhood mascot. Just a sweet little guy.”
TOWNHOMES RON ANTALEK NEW ALBION STATION
For Wyatt, it was a terrifying incident, in the sudden viciousness and the determination of the attack. “I thought my life was in danger. I emptied three quarters of a can of dog spray [a pepper spray/sulphur mix] in his face, and he didn’t even flinch.” Wyatt, six feet and 200 pounds, was amazed at the power of the pit bull. Thursday, he got physiotherapy for his hand – injured from punching the dog in the skull. “He crossed the parking lot,
latched onto him, and killed him – my little dog who I loved so much.” Slater and his wife Agnes say they were shaken up by the incident. On Thursday, at noon, they planned to put down their pet. Slater explained that the pit bull, Jax, was a rescued dog, “really responsive,” and who was well socialized with people and other big dogs. He called him “not quite a pit bull,” a mix of breeds, which may have included Rhodesian Ridgeback. See Dogs, 5

A problem since the start Business affected by lot behind Salvation Army shelter By M o ni s ha M ar tin s mmartins@mapleridgenews.com
A
s cars passed along the Haney Bypass, Joanne Pinkney watched a man perched behind a concrete median shoot drugs into his foot.
A few metres away, a bicycle towing a buggy full of assorted possessions was parked near her fence. “We’ve been battling this for a long, long time,” said Pinkney, who owns Maple Ridge Pool and Spa Centre. Pinkney has seen all kinds of shady transactions take place in the empty lot across from her business. Her customers have been propositioned by prostitutes, she has been threatened, and cleaning up discarded syringes is a daily task. She calls police and the bylaws department daily to complain about the people living in a ravine near Cliff Avenue. The police arrive and move people off the property. But 10 minutes later, she says, they are back. Pinkney blames the Salvation Army’s Caring Place for attracting the district’s down and out residents to the area. She and her husband have owned the pool and spa business since 1993. The shelter moved to the area in 2003. The problems with open drug use, parties in the woods and prostitution are driving away her customers. “The building was a business centre when we moved here,” said Pinkney. “It had a fabric shop,

We were put in this situation.” Pinkney has a thick file detailing all her correspondence with District of Maple Ridge since 2003 and is growing increasingly frustrated with Band-Aid solutions that aren’t solving the problem. She recently penned a letter to the Salvation Army’s head quarters, asking that the Caring Place be “a better corporate citizen.” She believes the district should be pushing for more affordable housing so people can get off the street. “It’s not changed at all,” Pinkney said. “They have to come up with a solution.” The Caring Place empathizes with Pinkney and the residents of Cliff Ave., but often can’t police what happens off its property. It isn’t the
only social agency in Maple Ridge’s downtown core, but one of more than 20 organizations providing support, from the food bank to a drug treatment centre. “We are working with bylaws and RCMP to clear up the situation, but a lot of it is out of our control,” said Caring Place director Darrell Pilgrim. Clients are not allowed to take food off site and Pilgrim added that most of the people who frequent Cliff Ave. are banned from the Caring Place. “The unfortunate thing is we serve abut 600 different individuals and we are talking about 20 individuals or less who are causing issues.” Tackling the problem isn’t simple, either. “A majority of the people are dealing with
mental health issues, poverty, hunger and a wide range of disorders that unfortunately our city doesn’t have the answers for right now,” said Pilgrim. As co-chair of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows-Katzie Housing Planning Table, Pilgrim believes affordable or subsidized housing is a solution to the homeless problem. People who work with the poor and homeless say there have been successes in the past three years. After rising steadily since 2005, the number of people living on the streets in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows dropped for the first time this year. Results of the 2014 Metro Vancouver count in March showed 84 homeless in the area, down 38 per cent from 110 in 2011. The housing planning table’s “End Homelessness Action Plan” recommends the creation of 15 to 20 units of low barrier affordable housing for the hard-to-house homeless population. It also urges the district to create a policy that makes affordable housing part of new residential developments. The district, meanwhile, assures downtown businesses and residents that staff are tackling the homeless problem. “We are doing our best to move them and we have moved numerous people along, but some keep coming back,” said bylaws director Liz Holitzki. “It’s almost like a revolving door.” Next week, two police officers trained in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design techniques will visit the vacant lot on Cliff Ave. to develop a solution. “It’s just hard with today’s legislation. You can get them to move off the property, but police can’t really arrest them for trespassing. It’s not an arrestable offence. It just makes it more difficult,” she added. Holitzki also believes the people are congregating on Cliff Ave, because it is so close to social services, such as the shelter. She said other organizations in the community often bring people who are living in the ravine food and clothes. They don’t understand that they are doing more harm than good. “They just don’t realize they are enabling them to stay there and contributing to the problem.”
Man gunned down on street in Maple Ridge Trevor Koehler, 33, did not have criminal record By M o ni s ha M ar tin s mmartins@mapleridgenews.com
A 33-year-old man with no criminal record was shot dead on a Maple Ridge street Tuesday night. Ridge Meadows RCMP were called to the 10300 block of 240th Street at 10:15 p.m. after neighbours reported hearing gun shots following an argument on the street. Police arrived to find Trevor Koehler collapsed on the street outside his house. He had been
shot multiple times. Koehler was taken to hospital, but did not survive. Sgt. Adam MacIntosh, with the RCMP Integrated Homicide Team, said investigators are looking for a light coloured, white or cream compact import car, possibly a Honda, Toyota or Acura. Koehler had no criminal record and was not known to police. “This does not appear to be gang related and the motive is yet to be confirmed,” MacIntosh added. “At this early stage of the investigation we can say Trevor was the victim of a targeted attack and this was not a random occurrence.
IHIT continues to work with the Ridge Meadows RCMP to determine why this shooting occurred and who is responsible.” Homicide investigators remained on scene Wednesday morning and had taped off a new subdivision of homes.

‘Scoring political points’ Strike from front
“For others, it’ll be basic daycare.” De Jong added that older children don’t require as much supervision, and have online options to maintain their studies if the labour dispute takes more instructional time away. The amount was cho-
sen to compensate families of 300,000 children up to age 12 in public school at no net cost to the provincial budget. He explained that parents will apply online, and be reimbursed in October. There is no end to the labour dispute in sight. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the govern-
ment are not talking, and no talks are scheduled. George Serra, the president of the Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association, characterized Thursday’s announcement as gamesmanship. “They’re just saying, ‘We don’t care how long this goes,’” said Serra. “And they’re also scor-
ing political points with some parents.” He said the government does not want to bargain, will not agree to mediation, and Education Minister Peter Fassbender has said Victoria will not legislate teachers back to work. Serra and other district representatives of the BCTF will be meeting with the union’s leadership on Aug. 22 in Kamloops.
It happened and it’s terrible: dog owner Dogs from front
Slater knew the dog had a strong prey instinct that included birds, squirrels and toy dog breeds. “He’s got a prey drive toward smaller dogs. He doesn’t know how to socialize with smaller dogs.” That morning, he was walking Jax and another pit bull cross. When Jax saw Tucker, he bolted toward the small dog. “My shoulder hurts from him ripping the leash out of my hand,” Slater said. Jax quickly covered about 150 feet, and attacked the smaller dog. In less than a minute, Jax
killed Tucker. Slater said he left quickly, faced with the emotional dog owner and a small group of angry neighbours, but not over a lack of caring. “We’re total dog lovers, and this is a tragic incident,” said a crying Agnes. “It happened, and it’s terrible, and there’s nothing we can do except put the dog down, and make sure it doesn’t happen again.” The pair planned to offer condolences to the Wyatts in private. “We’ll go there with our apologies,” she said. Wyatt believes the same dog had attacked another
person’s pet in the area, and said at least one more complaint allegation has come forward since the story of Tucker’s fatal attack. He is frustrated that he warned the strata that oversees both of their buildings about the aggressive dogs owned by Slater about a year ago, after another less serious dog attack, but alleges that no action was taken. “I predicted this could
happen,” he said. “Nobody did anything, and that’s the part that really bothers me.” Wyatt said he will not seek compensation from the Slaters, but is considering legal action against the strata company, which he believes should be held responsible. “We’re going to make some good come of this – that’s my goal.” RCMP and bylaws are investigating the incident.

Before flood Two recent announcements underline just how important the Fraser River is to the local economy and why it’s vital more steps be taken to prevent flooding. A new report by chambers of commerce in the region, warns a massive flood would cause tens of billions of dollars in damage and catastrophic losses for the 300,000 residents of the floodplain, as well as business and industry. As well, the Lower Mainland Flood Management Strategy wants an action plan to begin the process of raising dikes and improving other flood defences in the years ahead. Saskatchewan and Manitoba were recently hit with severe flooding and it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley could see flood damage in the future. In fact, recent studies by the province project that major floods will be more frequent and severe as a result of climate change. Some communities, like Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, already have extensive diking systems. However, with global weather patterns taking a turn to the extreme in recent years, cities on floodplains cannot take flooding for granted. Look at what happened in Calgary and many parts of normally dry Alberta last year, when the Bow River swelled past its banks. While communities in the area may be prepared for flooding, many dikes in the Fraser Valley are not high enough. A co-ordinated strategy is needed to strengthen them all. It’s good that business groups and government are taking a proactive approach at a potential future risk. Let’s hope senior governments put their money where there mouths are in doing upgrades now, rather than throwing money at cleaning up a disaster zone in the future. – Black Press

Trustees are hurtful bystanders “A bystander sees or knows about bullying. He can be part of the problem (hurtful bystander) or part of the solution (helpful bystander).”
B
ullying stops when students are helpful bystanders. Strategies taught in B.C. schools – endorsed Along the Fraser by trustees – encourage Jack Emberly kids to take a responsible stand when they witness bullying. They tell them to make it clear they won’t be involved in bullying behavior, won’t stand by and watch bullying, will support anyone being bullied, and report incidents. School trustees – the custodians of public education – should be more than helpful bystanders; they should be fearless defenders when it comes under attack. In 2012, Cowichan Valley school trustees accepted that responsibility. Instead of submitting a balanced budget that would have victimized programs and services yet again, members sent one in with a $3.7 million shortfall. Trustees were fired. “We felt we had ceased to be able to provide equal access to quality learning opportunities for all the children in Cowichan,” said board chair Eden Haythornthwaite (CBC News, July 1). Cowichan trustees made it clear they
Q
uestion of the week:
wouldn’t be involved in bullying behavior, would never stand by and watch bullying, would support anyone being bullied, and would report incidents. The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows board hasn’t the courage to do anything like this. Instead, it coaxes parents to protest underfunding – they already do on Facebook pages like Protect Public Education Now, and picket lines. In stark contrast, a weak local board writes a bizarre letter to Education Minister, Peter Fassbender (The News, July 18), asking him to “acknowledge the board is managing resources properly,” and that continuous budget cuts “will have a negative impact on students.” How do you get a gold star when you deny your students music, special needs support, or library services and excuse yourself by saying you had no choice? “It’s strange to have to prove the benefits of a library, one of civilization’s greatest and most enduring institutions,” UBC professor Ken Haycock wrote in his 2003 report, The Crisis in Canada’s School Libraries: The Case for Reform and Reinvestment. It’s difficult to find polite words to describe this weak-kneed approach to managing education. Hurtful bystander might be the closest. MRTA president George Serra (The News, July 23) says board letters are “too little, too late,” pre-election politics. “What would happen if two or three more boards did what Cowichan did,” he

asks. “It would pressure the government.” Instead, the local board submits balanced budgets in compliance with a declaration by secretary treasurer Wayne Jefferson (The News, May, 2012): “We have to get the education plan to fit the financial envelope,” setting the bar for our board. Its 2014 budget increased class size, cut CUPE staff, and saddled parents with a $215 student bus fee. The 2013 budget had increased class sizes, eliminated 19.4 full-time equivalent teachers, reduced student support services, and helping teachers, reduced clerical and maintenance position, and cut teacher librarians in half. “We’re just really afraid that what we stand for might be lost,” chair Mike Murray (The News, April 2013) said while predicting another 35 positions would be lost in this year. The balanced budget the board was proud of sucked $1.51 million from a reserve fund. It took from the future of public education in Maple Ridge. Recently, the board declined a public forum to discuss the educational crisis as teachers prepare to go back without a contract, and students who need support do without. Some trustees seek re-election. Serra says the public is entitled to know “what’s important, schools or their jobs.” If any candidates plan to be hurtful bystanders, instead of going to the wall for public education, they shouldn’t be on a ballot.

THE NEWS/letters
Looking out for best interests Editor, The News: Re: Poppycock on election timing (Letters, July 25). Why so defensive, Eleanor Palis? I don’t believe your name was ever mentioned in George Serra’s letter, yet here we are with almost a full page letter that’s all about you. Only a politician would jump at the opportunity to get themselves some free media coverage. Nothing to do with election timing, you say? I call “poppycock” on that one. I think we can all agree that letter writing to a government that doesn’t support public education and that chooses not to listen is futile. However, writing letters and submitting to the local paper, after you have slashed and burned numerous support staff jobs along with acrossthe-board cuts to their hours of work, seems just a tad hypocritical and can only be viewed as a jumpstart to an election campaign. Ms. Palis seems to pride herself on her “neutrality.” Does that mean she doesn’t hold any opinion on anything? How do you make deci-
sions by being totally neutral and never taking sides? Can’t imagine much gets accomplished with that kind of position. She also prides herself on being “fair.” Does she think targeting the jobs, hours of work and weeks of work of her lowest paid frontline workers, in order to balance a budget, fair? Does she think the elimination of all those jobs won’t directly affect students and their classrooms? She also prides this board on having no particular slant, one way or the other, yet did members of this board not publicly support candidates of the political party that is deliberately underfunding public education in this province? How is that not taking sides? It would appear this board has a definite slant to the right which must make it very difficult to pressure a political party it supports into making changes to its public education agenda. But, hey, I could be wrong. Ms. Palis claims that she “runs into” support staff often and they lavish her with praise on a job well done. Really? These employees are

online comments Traffic a mess Braden Nakonechny · British Columbia Institute of Technology: Re: Ridge gets first speed humps (The News, July 30). I feel for the Shady Lane home owners, but I hope we don’t see speed humps everywhere. The municipality has made a mess of traffic flow. The reason Shady lane is so busy is the intersection at 216th St. and 128th Ave. has gone from slow to a crawl with the change in light cycles and no right turns ... Traffic backs up in the evening all the way west to 203rd St. so drivers now take other roads to get around. Take away the no right on red and make the north-south light one cycle. There is no safety concern to turn right on red for 90 per cent of the day when traveling south on 216th St., only between 8 and 9 a.m. is there any traffic going west for a right to be made. Sure the intersection may improve when it becomes four lanes, but I would not bet on it.
No walk in park
Cindy Francis · Steveston Secondary School: Re: Pitt cracks down on dog owners (The News, July 25). So I can no longer walk through a park with my dog or bring her to the park when my daughter goes or throw a ball to her or even find a nice shady spot to relax on a hot day.

thanking you for the loss of their jobs and the reduction of their hours of work? Ms. Palis may have run into these employees, but I highly doubt she ever took the time or the trouble to speak to them. If she had and actually understood the work these people do we may not have seem the extreme cuts to school secretaries, reduction in education assistant hours and the loss of one week of employment for all school term employees. These cuts directly affect our students whether she wants to realize it or not. But that’s not enough, because next budget year, this board is going to target custodial services. So stay tuned for a new cleaning standard for our schools of “moderately dingy” because the health and safety of our students and staff isn’t really that important to this board. Seems what really matters is protecting those jobs that do not have any direct impact on students. Not only is this board ineffective, but it seems to have a lack of understanding as to the role of a trustee, so here’s a definition.
Trustee: Person or persons who are given control or power of administration over property and/or assets for the benefit of third party beneficiaries. Trustees are trusted to make decisions in the beneficiaries’ best interests. Employees are also beneficiaries, along with all the taxpayers who contribute to the public school system. Not only must trustees ensure that students have access to education in a safe and healthy environment, they must also ensure that employees are treated fairly, have a safe and healthy work environment and also have access to education, and they must ensure that all public assets – our school buildings – are properly cleaned and maintained. None of this is achieved by continuously eliminating the jobs of those who do that work. Ms. Palis, you need to get off your high horse, give your head a shake, broaden your interests and start showing some respect to your partner groups, because without everyone’s cooperation, nothing will be accomplished. As for your comment of “careful what you wish for” maybe you should have let your “leader” respond to Mr. Serra’s letter because your personal attack may very well come back to bite you. Leslie Franklin, president CUPE Local 703
Editor, The News: Re: Dog owners taxpayers, too (Letters, July 30). I completely agree. I understand that there are some irresponsible dog owners out there. But what about those baseball players? The amount of litter they leave behind? Not to mention the amount of work that goes in to making the field sports ready; then it is totally disrespected. My nephew questioned about why they always drink alcohol longer than they practice. And why are they allowed to drive through the park right up to the baseball dia-
mond, even though there are many parking spots in the lot? Still, they insist on parking on the grass.
“My nephew questioned about why they always drink alcohol longer than they practice.” Not to mention the baseball players don’t want to walk to the washroom so they urinate on the bushes behind the baseball diamond.
This is disrespectful. I have seen the dog bags that lazy people have thrown in the bushes and this does ruin it. And there has been irresponsible dog owners who have ruined it for others. But I think it is more important for everyone to respect others and the community where they live and to think about how their actions affect others. But I am really surprised that nothing has been done about the baseball players that sit and have a party in a public place, then drive away after. The police have been called
about this; but the players were gone or hid their alcohol before the police arrived. Isn’t the drinking a more serious offense? I also saw one baseball team member pull his truck up along walkway and push a contract worker’s cart that was being used to change garbages. How much more disrespectful can you be? Maybe the player figured it was a homeless person’s cart, but that is besides the point. It doesn’t matter who’s cart it was. It is just about respect and common courtesy. Pitt pair wants speed humps Now that Maple Ridge has speed humps, two Pitt Meadows residents are asking again to have them in their city. Last week, the raised asphalt humps were installed in Maple Ridge, along 124th Ave, between Laity and 216th streets, for $10,000. Darlene Mercer has now written Pitt Meadow about traffic concerns she and her fellow neighbors have been talking about for years. “Our neighborhood has been asking for traffic calming since we moved here about 17 years ago,” she wrote. Mercer lives near Edith McDermott elementary and said she and her neighbors “still have a problem with people speeding through our neighbourhood. Every

Instead of installing speed humps along Mercer’s street, Park
Road, the city opted for the installation of traffic bump-outs. Bump-outs, also called curb extensions, are another traffic calming device designed to narrow portions of a street. Curbs are reconstructed to eliminate parking lanes, or to narrow through lanes. Mercer argued they are ineffective for slowing down traffic. “We’re not getting

He also wants speed humps installed or stop signs. Both Holding and Mercer emphasized bump-outs also reduce parking space. Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters is not opposed to the idea of installing speed humps somewhere in the city. “I think we need to look at all options that keep our citizens safe,” she said. Maple Ridge plans on monitoring the effectiveness of their newly installed speed humps for the next six months to a year.

With a new look on the inside and outside, the 2015 Dodge Challenger is ready to take on its Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro competition head-on. According to market research, two thirds of Challenger buyers say they don’t cross-shop anything else. That said, those who did cross-shop, and decided to go in another direction, attributed it to its archaic interior. That problem is no more. Now Challengers come with a driver-centric and cool-looking interior setup. Portland, Oregon – Do I take the red key or the black key? The black key limits horsepower to 500. Jaws drop. If you put it in valet mode, rpms are limited to 4,000. Gosh, I really hope I can take the red key… This Matrix-like conundrum is a good one to have. Take the safer route (black key) if you’d rather ease off on harnessing the gargantuan horsepower of the 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat. It’s the most powerful production Chrysler V8, as well as the most powerful production muscle car to date, so it needs to be treated with respect. But then again, the red key will allow me to tame this muscled feline one shift at a time, whether through the 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic. Looks like the decision has been made for me. Red key is sitting pretty in the centre console. And it’s in track mode. Electronic intervention is minimal. I

becoming more specialized along with the opening of the Detroit Truck Plant, Ford started consolidating truck production to fewer plants. Beginning in the late 1970s, Ford split its North American assembly groups into car and truck. Today, only two plants build all F-150s globally – the Kansas City Assembly Plant in suburban Claycomo, Mo., and the Dearborn Truck Plant near Dearborn, Mich. Off-white or chrome? The front bumper was longest-running component constantly used on every single pickup and remained unchanged during the F-series era from 1959 to 1979. I guess he liked it. Sam Walton, founder of Walmart and one of the richest men in America, drove the same 1979 F-150 Custom 4x4 to work every day until he died in 1992. When asked in an interview why, he stated, “What am I supposed to haul my dogs around in, a Rolls-Royce?” Today it can be seen enshrined in the company’s visitors centre/museum in Bentonville, Ark.

Investing in the real estate market a focus for buyers By Kerry Vital
In Vancouver’s thriving real estate market, buyers are finding innovative ways to purchase their dream home. One of them is investing in a property in a growing area, allowing the original buyer to either rent out the home or sell it at a premium as the neighbourhood becomes more popular. “With a growing population and increasingly high demand for real estate, the reality of what’s affordable and the dream
location don’t always match,” says Shaadi Faris, vice-president of Intergulf Development Group. “Purchasing an affordable investment property in an emerging area is a means for more first-time buyers to get a leg-up in the market and work towards buying their ideal home in a more desirable location sooner.” He cites the growing boom in real estate opportunities in Burnaby’s Metrotown as an example of buyers choosing to purchase in a vibrant area close to transit and education that
NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT
will get them a return on their investment when they choose to sell or rent out the property. “Buyers are becoming very savvy,” he says. “They want to know the price per square foot, what the strata fees are. They want to know what the opportunities are to build their investment.” However, Faris points out that the amenities and features of a home can’t be ignored. “People have to actually want to live there,” he says. Faris has seen a difference in the kind of buyer as well. “It’s a more mature condo market now,” he says. “People are more sophisticated in understanding the lingo and the product, and it’s imperative that there’s no wasted space, because every cent counts. Buyers are looking with that level of detail now; it’s not always an emotional purchase. There’s too much on the line.” Intergulf has seen an increase in just such an interested buyer at their project The Park Metrotown, which is located right in the heart of the area and will have the access to transit and education at BCIT and SFU that buyers are looking for. “People know that it’s a smart place to invest,” Faris says.

Ikonik Homes’ Jacobsen is located just moments from The Shops at Morgan Crossing, and features contemporary West Coast architecture, large windows and spacious three- and four-bedroom floorplans.
Urban elegance at Ikonik’s Jacobsen By Kerry Vital
Ikonik Homes has a reputation for exceptional quality and innovative design. Now, they’re bringing their expertise to the South Surrey neighbourhood with Jacobsen. A recent Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association Ovation Award winner, Jacobsen is a special development. “The design of this community is different and unique to the South Surrey market,” says project marketing manager Brandon Trent. “These are West Coast contemporary-style homes.” The 65 townhomes, ranging in size between 1,734 and 2,219 square feet in a variety of three- and four-bedroom floorplans, have serious curb appeal with their elegant cedar plank siding, stonework, black metal railings, floor-to-ceiling windows and generous patios and private yards. Each home has a side-byside double-car garage, adding even more convenience for homeowners. Some homes have extra space for two more cars to park in the driveway.
“These homes feel like a single-family home,” says Trent. Inside, natural light pours in through those large windows and fills the space to the airy 10’ ceilings. Select homes have stunning views of the Coast Mountains. Wood laminate flooring throughout the main living areas is complemented by lush Beaulieu designer nylon carpeting in the bedrooms. Buyers are able to choose between two design colour schemes: Light and Dark. The kitchens are fit for any aspiring chef, with stainless-steel appliances, distinctive quartz countertops complemented by a tile backsplash and deluxe cabinetry in either contemporary or shaker style. The luxurious ensuite bathroom holds a spacious walk-in shower and porcelain tile flooring, while the main bathroom features a deep soaker tub, quartz countertops and chic sconce lighting. The master bedroom also includes a walk-in closet and custom closet organizers. Other thoughtful conveniences include a full-sized washer and dryer and a gas hookup for a barbecue on the balcony and back yard. The location is one of Jacobsen’s finest features. It is located just moments from everything at The Shops at Morgan Crossing, as well as leisure and recreation opportunities and the convenience of commuting via Highway 99 or Highway 1. On-site, residents will have exclusive access to a 2,400-squarefoot clubhouse, with an exercise studio, theatre room, lounge area, fire pit and
children’s play area, among other things. Residents will have easy access to Morgan Heights Linear Park via a walking trail that connects the community. Some homes are move-in ready, and buyers have already started taking possession.
“Everyone is thrilled with their new home,” Trent says. Homes at Jacobsen start at $469,900. For more information, visit www.jacobsenliving. com, call 604-538-5591 or stop by the sales centre at #1-2687 158th Street, open daily (except Friday) between noon and 5 p.m.

Kids and carnivorous plants

By Mike Lascelle
I
first wrote about the carnivorous plant trend last fall, but what has really impressed me of late is the unprecedented interest coming from rather unexpected quarters. What’s different here is that kids are literally dragging their parents and grandparents to the local garden centre in search of those ‘plants that eat bugs’. And they are not just coming to look at the sideshow. They are bringing with them a barrage of sensible questions. On any given day I’ll be confronted with a flurry of queries. How do they eat the bugs? Do they have a stomach like us? Can they stay outside for winter? Will it bite me? How long do they live? Can I feed it? Do they need water? Those basic questions are really important because they tell me that this group of plants has truly engaged kids and diverted their attention away from the usual distractions of computers, video games and even cell phones. And anything that focuses their awareness towards the natural world, even for a brief period of time, gives me hope. So it seems that we have a bit of a generational touchstone here and that this group of evolutionary plant freaks may be one of the few things to remind our children that nature and the natural world in general is breathtaking, and worth the effort to both explore in the present and preserve for the future. So I thought that I would share several stories with you, just as a means of inspiration. Two boys, about seven and 10 years old, came to the nursery recently with their father, who was looking for a number of shrubs and trees for his new landscape.
(Top) Pitcher plants and a fork-leaved sundew.
The older boy happened to notice the carnivorous plant sign on the way in and asked me in a very businesslike manner: “where are the carneyvor-us plants?” His father promised him he could see them right after he bought the shrubs he needed, which meant that we heard “can I see the carney-vor-us plants now?” about every two minutes. When we finally got to the carnivorous plant section, the older boy introduced his brother to the Venus fly traps (Dionaea muscipula) and sundews (Drosera), but he discovers pitcher plants (Sarracenia) for the first time and asked how they catch their prey. As luck would have it, a fly had landed on the lip of a nearby specimen, but the overhanging lid prevented us from peering deeper into the ‘tube of death’, which is simply a modified leaf with slippery sides and downward facing hairs. So I cut off one of the older tubes that had fallen over and split it in half, revealing a solid core of fly and wasp
carcasses. He was so impressed by the sheer volume of bugs and the fact that even nasty wasps could fall prey that he decided, then and there, that Sarracenias were the plants for him, and suddenly the chorus of “can I see the carney-vor-us plants” changed to, “daddy, I want a pitcher plant.” A grandmother brings her teenaged granddaughter and younger grandson out for a trip to buy some summer flowers. The granddaughter quickly diverts her to the carnivorous plant section, where she is fascinated by the antler-like tentacles of the forkleaved sundew (Drosera binata var. multifida). She also notices that the tentacles are covered in tiny fungus gnats and asks if they can be kept inside as houseplants while reminding her grandma of all the fruit flies plaguing her kitchen. She left with a sundew and a smile. Mike Lascelle is a local nursery manager and gardening author.

THE NEWS/sports Extreme pistol competitors blaze away National championships being held in Pitt Meadows Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
P
itt Meadows is seeing more gunplay than a Quentin Tarantino movie this week, as host city to the national championships of the International Practical Shooting Confederation of Canada. “Extreme pistol” is the nickname that is most often tagged on the sport, in which competitors shoot at targets through mockup windows, between obstacles and in various shooting positions. Compared with the staid and precise sport of traditional target shooting, it might look like a movie gunfight. “We’re the drag racing funny cars of the pistol sports community,” agreed local club member Murray ‘Doc’ Gardner. He explains that the national competition has 16 stages, each with unique challenges and demands, much like holes on a golf course. They are spread out across the hillside above Golden Eagle Golf Course, at the Thompson Mountain Outdoor Range, near the end of Ladner Road. Gardner was among a group of locals who tried the sport for the first time in California in the late 1970s, and loved it immediately. “It’s the dynamic,” he explained. “You never do the same thing twice.” Again, he compares it to golf, in that there is always a different shot to challenge the sportsman. Members shoot on the move and against the clock, into multiple paper and steel targets, moving targets, disappearing targets, and face other challenges. They shoot in prone, kneeling or standing positions. But there’s no rolling and shooting, which he terms “too Hollyweird.” Those guys kept going back to California for more – often enough that the van they had been taking was soon in need of a shorter junket. They set up the Pitt Meadows course in 1977 and hosted their first event with 42 shooters. At the nationals this weekend, there are 300 competitors. They compete with real ammo, moving swiftly from station to station in the timed event. Critics will knock it for a lack of safety, but Murray notes that in 37 years there has never been an accident in a tournament. “Safety is paramount” is a credo, and shooters are closely supervised. “It’s an exciting sport,” said B.C. match director Stephen Price, a Langley lawyer and former RCMP member. “It’s highly entertaining for spectators and participants, and a great sport with great people. “We have Canada’s best shooters coming, and we have big names in IPSC from Russia, Poland, Czech, Australia, Slovakia, the Philippines, Spain and the U.S.A.” IPSC requires competitors to shoot fast and accurately. Scoring takes both into account, and also factors in the power of their ammunition. Shooters strive to shave fractions off their times in drawing their handgun from a holster, and

You are graded against shooters of a similar level of skill and experience and using similar equipment, and you’re always trying to be better than you were last month.” For his take on what makes a good extreme pistol shooter, look no further than Gardner’s personalized licence plate, which reads “DVC,” an acronym for Latin words meaning “accuracy, power and speed.” Unlike other pistol sports, which use small calibre handguns, extreme pistol has metal targets that have to be knocked over by a flush hit from a powerful gun. Power, and the shooter’s ability to control a pistol with some recoil, counts in this game.
Falcon stands in the middle of the bridge, which is suspended on chains, and waits for the start signal. The barrier in front of the shooter prevents him from shooting over the top or through the middle. The shooter has to shoot from side to side of the barrier.
“It’s the dynamic – you never do the same thing twice. Murray Gardner, former Canadian champ
He knows what makes a good shooter, as a former champion who won a national title eight years in a row, from 1978 to 1985. Gardner competed at the world championships in 1986. “We have had some very successful shooters in the past,” he said of the club. What demographic enjoys the sport? “Pick one,” answers Gardner, warning that many who try it are soon buying a $1,000 handgun to join the sport.

Franklin preparing for world championships Coming off breakout at Canadian Open tourney By Nei l Corbe tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
Maple Ridge’s national team softball player Larissa Franklin enjoyed a breakout tournament at the Canadian Open Fastpitch International in Surrey, and enters the world championships with a new confidence. Last year, Franklin served Team Canada mostly as a pinch runner and bench player, who stood out for her great defence, and track star speed. This year, she didn’t know what her role would be. “I didn’t really have any expectations – I just went in and played.” But there were injuries to the talented Canadian outfield, and her role expanded. “I knew I had to show up.” Franklin’s bat certainly showed up. She played nine games, and got 13 hits in 27 at bats, for a sterling 0.481 batting average. That was one of the best averages of the tournament. She also scored six runs and drove in four more. “I’m a lot more comfortable this year,” she said. Franklin admitted that there were a lot of nerves in her rookie season – despite the fact that she had been a standout with the Canadian Junior women’s team, and had competed at the junior world championships in South Africa. Still, playing against the best women in the world, on the

Larissa Franklin has added a great bat to her outstanding speed and defence. top-ranked teams like Japan, the U.S. or Australia, was intimidating at first. “Now, I just see them as any other team.” All of her hits were singles, because her game plan is to slap the ball to the left side of the infield, and blast off for first, forcing the infielders to make a perfect defensive play
if they’re going to get her out. It’s a proven tactic that makes use of her best asset – her impressive wheels. “I just put the ball in play and go.” She doesn’t steal bases as much as she did during her 40-steal seasons in college. “The catchers’ arms are unbelievable,” she said.
She leaves tomorrow for Ontario, to get ready for the world championships. Team Canada will play the Stratford Brakettes club team in a pair of double headers on Aug. 3 and 4 in Bramptom, and then the national team women from Puerto Rico for four more games on Aug. 7 and 8 split between Mississauga and Brampton. Then it’s off to the world championships in the Netherlands, from Aug. 15-24. It will be the 14th edition of the tournament, and the first ever held in Europe. She’s not guaranteed to start in centre field. “We have a very talented outfield. There’s five of us, and any of us could start on any given day.” Canada enters the nationals ranked fourth in the world, behind Japan, U.S. and Australia. They know they’re good. “We’re a better team than last year for sure, and all of the veterans are saying this is one of the best teams they’ve played on. “If we show up, we should medal.” Last season, Franklin played for the IPFW (Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne) Mastadons, where she hit .459. With one year left of eligibility in the NCAA, she will move to the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers in Bowling Green, following her coach and a number of teammates who are making the move. She is majoring in psychology and minoring in health and nutrition. So her itinerary for August will be Ontario, the Netherlands and then on to Kentucky.

Four track stars to Hershey Four athletes from Maple Ridge have been selected to the regional team to compete in the Hershey North American Track and Field Championship. The event is being held Aug. 2 at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. The Hershey Games is the culminating event for hundreds of thousands of kids in North America who participate in the Hershey Youth Track and Field program, the largest youth program of its kind in North America. The four are outstanding athletes and will all rank among the best athletes at this North American Championship and be challenging for medals, according to their club coach, Andrew Lenton. Competitors receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the prestigious event courtesy of Hershey. Nicholas Aron, for 11to 12-year-old boys, was selected for the 800m event and has a personal best time of 2:19, which is one of the fastest ever recorded for his age. He is the current B.C. Champion for his age at this event. Eero Sorenson, 9- to 10-year-old boys, was selected for the softball throw and has a best of throw of 116:04.50 feet. Chisom Obioha, for 11-to 12-year old girls, has been selected for the standing long jump, which she has a best of 2.35m. She has a best long jump performance of 5.28m, which is the furthest jump ever recorded for her age in B.C. The only returning athlete is bronze medalist Jade Lenton, competing in the 400m event with a personal best time of 63.92 seconds. She recently captured the 600m gold medal at the B.C. Championships for her age with a time of 1:47.00, which ranks as the second fastest time ever recorded for an 11-year-old girl at that distance in B.C. She also won a silver medal at 200m with a time of 28.39 seconds.
