Kozak awaits sentencing in child pornography case AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter

A Quesnel man who was charged with accessing and possession of child pornography, is being sentenced Sept. 11 after pleading guilty. Jereme Carl Kozak was arrested June 6 of last year and charged with accessing child pornography, possession of child pornography and possession of child pornography for the purpose of distribution. Kozak had recently moved from Quesnel to Prince George when he was arrested. On the evening of June 6, members of the Prince George RCMP’s General

Duty Section with assistance from the Detachment’s Crime Reduction Team executed a search warrant at a residence on the 400 block of Voyageur Drive in Prince George. The 25-year-old was immediately taken into custody. According to police, the man was actively downloading child pornography as police arrived at the residence. A computer and other evidence was seized. Kozak was released by the court and must abide by strict conditions including no contact with children 16-years-old or under, unless supervised, not to attend parks, pools, school grounds, daycare centres and other places

where children under the age of 16 may be present and he is not allowed Internet access. “The RCMP take crimes against children very seriously,” Cpl. Craig Douglass, spokesperson for the Prince George Detachment, said in a press release. “The children involved in child pornography investigations are victims and end up with lifelong emotional scars. We will do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.” This investigation was initiated by the Provincial Integrated Child Exploitation Team (ICE), a specialized police unit that identifies and investigates those persons responsible for sexual offences

against children.

Break and enters Quesnel RCMP are urging homeowners to lock their doors and windows following a recent string of residential break and enters in our community. Quesnel RCMP are currently investigating a series of residential break and enters which have occurred in the area of Cariboo Field in West Quesnel over the past few weeks. During the past three weeks, suspects have targeted five homes in this area. In the majority of these cases, the homeowner has left a window or door unlocked or insecure. Elec-

tronic equipment including cellular phones, ipads and laptop computers have been stolen during these break ins. “Thieves prey on crimes of opportunity. An open window or unlocked door is an easy target for property criminals,” media spokesperson for the Quesnel RCMP Cst. Krista Vrolyk said. RCMP are asking the public to do their part in preventing property crime by locking their doors and windows during the day and at night. “With the heat that we’ve been experiencing in these summer months, it is natural for residents to want to open windows especially at night to cool their homes,” Vrolyk said.

Good day, Quesnel. Thanks for reading — and that includes loyal subscriber K. Rana! To join the Observer family, please call 250-992-2121 and ask for circulation.

“An unlocked ground floor window puts you and your family at unnecessary risk. RCMP are urging citizens to secure ground floor windows with a locking device or by wedging an item inside the window tracks which would prevent the window from opening more than just a few inches.” Do your part in preventing crime – lock and secure your windows and report any suspicious activity immediately to police. If you have any information regarding these break ins, call the Quesnel RCMP at 250-992-9211. Or, if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers at 1-800222-8477.

Tourists arriving in Quesnel is nothing unusual, however for several people on Saturday, their arrival was anything but conventional. Members of the Pacific Pilots, a flying association based in the Lower Mainland but also out of Lillooett, were on an excursion from points south and they converged on the Quesnel Airport in their aircrafts, which mostly consisted of ultra-light planes. Originally on their way to Yellowknife for a weekend trip, plans changed due to extensive smoke from wildfires in the Yellowknife area and points in between. Members of Quesnel’s Skyfest crew and flying enthusiasts were on hand to greet the fly-ins, show them around the community, host a barbecue and facilitate a visit to Barkerville on Sunday. Pilots and passengers in the visiting planes were then either carrying on with a modified itinerary or returning to the homes in the south, on Monday. Annie Gallant photos

BC Assessment to photograph homes in Gold Pan City

Digital cameras mounted on a clearly-marked van will soon be on the residential streets throughout the Cariboo region as BC Assessment uses innovation to update photos used for property assessment purposes. The residential photo update initiative will take street front digital photos of approximately 4,000 single family homes in the Quesnel area, 3,300 in the Williams Lake area and 475 in 100 Mile House starting late July through early August. This technology has already been successfully used throughout much of Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, the Okanagan, Kamloops, Prince George and Nanaimo. “As the Crown corporation responsible for accurately valuing all properties in B.C., we are always looking for innovative ways to provide more timely, accurate, equitable and fair assessments to all property owners,” Deputy-Assessor for the Cariboo region,

Should You Be a “Hands-on” Investor? If you want to send your children or grandchildren to post-secondary school, retire comfortably and achieve other important life goals, you typically have to invest — it’s that simple. But the process of investing can sometimes seem anything but simple. What can you do to gain confidence that you are making the right investment moves?

The answer may depend on how involved you want to be with your investment decisions. Initially, you might think that you would like to be totally “hands on.” After all, how you save and invest your money is unquestionably a highly personal matter. And once you start exploring the investment world, you may find it fascinating, as it entails virtually every human endeavor imaginable: business, politics, science, the environment, and so on. But if you want to completely run your own show, you will need to put in a lot of work — such as studying the financial markets, staying up-to-date on changing investment environments and monitoring your portfolio to make sure it is still appropriate for your financial needs and goals. Most people find that they do not have the time or expertise to manage this investment process on their own, which is why they turn to professional financial advisors. The key advantage in working with an advisor is that he or she knows your risk tolerance, goals and family situation, and can help you create a personalized, long-term investment strategy. A good financial advisor will communicate with you regularly and make recommendations. A financial advisor can offer you a variety of strategies and types of investments — such as stocks, bonds and mutual funds — to help you work toward your goals. Ultimately, though, you will be the one to make the “buy” or “sell” decisions. Some investors prefer to leave even the buy-andsell decisions to professionals. Most financial advisors offer investment programs that take care of this for you. With these programs, you choose a professionally managed portfolio of investments. The programs typically offer a wide range of portfolios, so you can choose one that’s appropriate based on your needs, goals and risk tolerance. Each portfolio contains a broad range of investments that are selected by professional analysts and represent a variety of asset classes. Investment programs may also offer a sophisticated rebalancing process designed to keep your assets allocated appropriately, which can help keep you on track toward your specific financial goals. Whether you choose to make your own decisions in consultation with a financial advisor or to invest in an investment program — or both — you really should learn as much as possible about your investments. Whichever method you decide is best for you, remember that investing involves risk, and investment performance is never guaranteed. So make sure you’re asking the right questions, such as: What are the risk characteristics? How has a particular investment vehicle performed relative to others in its category? What are the tax implications of owning and selling a specific investment vehicle? What are the costs and fees associated with each choice? As you may have heard many times, knowledge is power — and that’s certainly true in the investment arena.

Hat-trick donation by RBC Foundation helps Barkerville’s school program A charitable donation by the RBC Foundation towards Barkerville’s Educational Programming: K – 12 School Students benefitted Barkerville’s awardwinning, curriculumbased interpretive school program in 2014, and helped to provide exceptional interactive history lessons for students throughout British Columbia this past May and June. “RBC is more than happy to provide a donation to the Barkerville Educational School Program,” branch manager, RBC Royal Bank Kevin Krampl said. “At RBC we see the value of the historical town and the positive impact it has on all the students who attend.” Barkerville used the RBC Foundation funds to help facilitate a comprehensive program schedule for students of all ages participating in the 2014 Barkerville School Program, as well as purchase materials and supplies required for the implementation of fully-immersive, educational experiences.

“We are particularly pleased to have the RBC Foundation return as a donor this year, after two previous and much appreciated partnerships,” Barkerville’s Chief Executive Officer Ed Coleman said. “RBC continues to offer impressive community support and we hope this relationship will continue to benefit us both for

years to come.” The RBC Foundation is a major supporter of communities across Canada, and believes in the power of the individuals who live in them, as is reflected through RBC’s support of children and youth, sports organizations, emerging artists, diversity and inclusion – all of which help to foster stronger

I

t’s B.C. Day this Monday and with it comes one of the best times of the year – the middle of summer. Those of us who are lucky enough to live in B.C. will enjoy the statutory holiday by enjoying our amazing climate, geography and culture. It’s almost a Canadian responsibility to get outdoors and enjoy the waning days of summer. We actually have it all in B.C. – from the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Mountains. The vast interior plains and forests, to the lakes and rivers scattered across the Cariboo – all within easy reach. The vineyards and orchards in the Okanagan and the local farms all supply us with what we need and what we enjoy. This is a very abundant province with such a variety of landscapes and seascapes. We have the potential to grow all of our own food and Mother Nature supplies the rest. So why don’t we? It is imperative to preserve what farmland we have and say “no” when it is being wrestled away from the farmer to the developer. Farming doesn’t make anyone rich, but we need to ensure we can supply our own needs without relying on other countries for food. We may not be able to grow avocados or mangoes, but we can grow the basics. We need to ensure our resources remain in Canadian hands because this is our inheritance and our legacy. We can’t and shouldn’t sell it away to the highest bidder. We all take pride in being British Columbians and we need to remember what we love about this province, what it affords us and why it is important to protect our life in this province. Take a moment on this B.C. Day to reflect on the beauty of our province and the incredible lifestyle we enjoy here. Take a road less travelled and discover a place you may never have been to before. Enjoy our beaches and lakes and cities and bask in the knowledge that we live in the best place on earth. Happy B.C. Day. – Autumn MacDonald

A reminder to drive safe

was pulled over for suspected drunk driving last Friday night. Luckily I wasn’t drunk. I had just exited off the highway around 11 p.m. on my way home from the gas station with milk, pancake mix and syrup and was less than five minutes from my house when I saw the flashing lights behind me. I pulled over and accidentally drove up on the curb. I then sat there, waiting for the police officer to come to my window, hoping whomever it was would be in a forgiving mood. “I’m sorry,” I said when he approached. “Was I driving too fast?” “Yes you were,” he replied. “You were driving erratically and you didn’t have your lights on either.” I excitedly told him I had a new vehicle and the lights that came on automatically from the inside made it seem like they were on outside as well. I then tried to explain my bad driving. “Have you had anything to drink tonight?” he asked shining a flashlight in my face and seemingly sniffing my breath. “No,” I said quickly.

Lori Welbourne

On A Brighter Note “Are you sure about that?” he asked. As I thought about it I recalled all the times I’ve heard that you should just say no to that question no matter what the truth is. “Well,” I replied pausing, trying to remember the exact events of my busy evening. “There was this one drink. But that was a long time ago.” “Based on what I’ve seen I’m going to need you to get out of the vehicle,” he said after a few more questions. He asked me to get rid of my gum and take a sobriety test. I suddenly felt stressed. I knew I only drank one Mike’s Hard Lemonade at my friend’s pool party, and that was over two hours earlier, but I worried because I hadn’t eaten anything all night. Standing on the side of the

looked at the results with a surprised expression. “What did I blow?” I asked like an hyper little kid wanting to know the results of their grade two math exam. “You’re fine,” he replied with a sideways smirk. “You can get back in your vehicle and wait.” As I sat there I felt incredibly grateful that I hadn’t had more than one drink and then gotten behind the wheel like I would have done when I was younger. I also thought about how much I didn’t want to get a fine for speeding or driving with my lights off, but I was okay with whatever my penalty would be. Fortunately for me, I got off with a written warning. Immensely relieved, I promised to turn my lights on, do the speed limit and drive my potentially fatal four thousand pound beast a lot more responsibly. I couldn’t promise not to seem drunk though. I’m too old to be changing my personality now. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. She can be contacted at LoriWelbourne.com

road with him and another officer we waited for a third cop to show up with the breathalyzer. As we waited I talked. And the more I talked the more drunk I seemed. Even to myself. “Have you ever taken a sobriety test before?” Constable Arpink asked. “Yes,” I answered enthusiastically. And then I stupidly told him how hammered I got pounding back drink after drink and blowing into the breath-taking device for a CTV News story years ago when the lower alcohol level laws were first implemented. I could tell I wasn’t making much sense. Especially since I’d just told them I never drink. “Are you sure you only had one?” he asked. “People sometimes lie to us. Spidey senses Summertime brings out the creepy crawlers, except for this exceptionally cute hay spider who resides in a field on the north highway. Karen Powell photo

The real jewels of Quesnel are the people Editor: They say time flies when you’re having fun, and since we’ve moved to Quesnel, we’ve had a lot more fun than many of the places we’ve lived before. At the end of July we will have been here five years. Although it may be a short time to some, it seems like we’ve always lived here. Our main attraction in moving to Quesnel initially was of course the real estate prices. As time went on we began to notice the many beautiful places Quesnel has to offer. But the real jewels of Quesnel are the folks

Letters to the Editor

that live here. People still use their manners, hold doors open and aren’t afraid to strike up a friendly conversation with a complete stranger. Even our boys at 12 and 14 love our new hometown. Little did we know that we lucked out and won the best neighbours lottery. In fact my whole neighborhood deserves an award. Now I’m not sure if you readers are familiar with my story but my neighbour submitted an article to the Observer a few weeks back regarding all the troubles I’ve been experiencing with a new knee gone bad.

My family and I returned from Kamloops after this past surgery in May and within minutes we had one of our neighbors calling the boys over to bring a lovely bouquet of flowers and a get well card with well wishes back for me. Also within a half an hour our other neighbours called to inform us they have arranged a benefit dance, complete with a live band and the silent auction. They wanted to try and help us in our stressful situation. They made all the arrangements which as you can imagine took

a lot of valuable time and effort to ensure the success of the event. Unbelievable...right? It gets better. On the night of the event, I could hardly believe my eyes as they brought me into the hall to see every table full or near to it of folks who have taken the time out of their busy schedule to come and help support me and my family. There were friends that we knew and a whole hall full of people that came out to help a family in need. Now talk about community spirit! I guess what I want to say is thank you so very

much to all the folks who came to the Elks Hall on June 21 and a special thank you to my neighbors for organizing the event. You all are truly some of Quesnel’s finest. Nadine Hill Quesnel

Thank you Editor: A big thank you to the Quesnel hospital staff. I am from out of town. Due to a sudden and aggressive throat

infection, I recently spent a week in your hospital. I have nothing but praise and admiration for the compassionate and professional staff I encountered during my stay. Throughout a trying and quite scary, lonely time the nurses and doctors were helpful, caring and informative. A special thank you to the nurses Colleen, Lisa and Paul and, in particular, to Dr. Eksteen and Dr. Naidoo. I think that Dr. Baker would be proud of how you are all living up to his legacy. With her latest mural being installed on the Kwik Kleen Laundromat and The Bistro, Leigh Cassidy and her band of artists, including Gloria Magill, left, have taken a playful approach to the wrap-around mural at the corner of Anderson and Doherty Drive. With the help of Bernie “DiDiT!” Bates, a columnist, artist, poet, ex-bullrider and characterist formerly from Williams Lake, now residing in West Kelowna and several local artists the mural will feature each of the people who work in the business including Cleo the standard poodle. Leigh and Bernie collaborated on the caracitures and Bernie will be here for another week to complete the first phase of the project. Owner Theresa Kraus recreates the pose of herself being installed on the front of the building. Quesnel will be seeing more of Bernie as he completed the business window art for Billy Barker Days and has been asked to come back again next year.

PROVINCIAL PERSPECTIVE

Ottawa follows B.C.’s treaty stepping stones TOM FLETCHER Black Press

The federal government has responded to the strengthening of aboriginal title in B.C. by following the province’s lead and focusing on resource use agreements rather than full-scale treaties that have been slow and expensive to negotiate. A shift in federal policy was announced Monday by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Minister Bernard Valcourt, endorsing non-treaty and incremental treaty agreements such as B.C. has focused on in recent years. Valcourt also appointed Vancouver lawyer Doug Eyford as a special advisor, to follow up on his advice to Ottawa last fall on developing West Coast oil and gas export projects. B.C. Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad welcomed the change in federal approach, describing resource agreements as “stepping stones to reconciliation.” “We had been hoping the federal government would come to the table

Cathy Sawtell has turned her artistic hand to painting utilitarian items such as tables and serving trays but maintains her commitment to responsible and ethical art. Annie Gallant photo

athy Sawtell has a style all her own. Always surrounded by a family of artists, for the past 30 years she has created her unique artwork which reflects her view of the world and the importance she places on nature, women’s place and influence on the world and the experiences she’s had in various places and times. With grave concerns for the state of the world, Sawtell paints primarily in black and white with injections of colour to reflect her hope for the future. “It’s very interpretive,” she said with a smile. Married to her Italian husband Luca, Sawtell spent the last three years

living in a small medieval town, Peccioli, in Tuscany where her work turned to a more internal, emotional reaction to her mixed emotions of living in another country, unable to speak the language and missing her beloved Canada. “I loved being an artist in Italy and met many wonderful people, but I was very lonely and missed Canada very much,” she said. One such encounter with a Muslim woman, moved Sawtell to paint a picture of an incomplete, unrealized woman of great beauty but definitely surpressed by an overbearing, chauvinistic husband. “We were not allowed much communication but she inspired me to paint,” she said. While in Italy, she had

a rare opportunity to have her work viewed by legendary Italian art critic Vittorio Sgarbi. Although known for his unorthodox and often scathing reviews, Sgarbi spent considerable time looking over her work on display and focused on one piece which he called interesting. Sawtell was overwhelmed by his attention and felt it was a highlight of her career so far. Sawtell admits she doesn’t have a defined idea about what her paintings will be, but rather when she takes brushes or other tools in hand she allows her inspiration to guide her, often the work a surprise to her as well. With many of her canvases including women, the artist rarely paints faces as she

wants the viewer to see themselves in the work. Upon returning to Canada with Luca, Sawtell, whose history is wrapped up in Northern B.C., tried a few locations before realizing Quesnel was where they wanted to be. In a snug little apartment on the Westside, they are happy to leave the front door open, let the sun shine in and for Sawtell, paint all day. “Painting every day is my passion,” she said. Primarily an acrylic painter, Sawtell has recently diversified from her canvas work, experimenting with painting on utilitarian items such as tables and household items. “The painting on furniture and objects is what I want to pursue

right now,” she said. “I enjoy it so much and it allows for almost threedimensional work – such a challenge.” With various themes, including African savannahs, ocean scenes

with eagles soaring overhead and various wildlife scenes, the tables are low, substantial, functional tables that happen to display a decorative top which has been treated to increase it’s functionality. With attention to mood, realizism and artistic expression, Sawtell is marketing these tables either from her home, 250-992-3772 or through Bed, Baskets and Beyond at the top of Dragon Lake Hill. You can also view her work on her Facebook page Just a Little Art and Soul. “I’m proud of what I do and I want the people who buy my art to take pride in owning something I painted,” she said. “It’s such a thrill when someone likes my work enough to purchase it.”

LIFESTYLES PET SAVE COALITION SOCIETY OF CANADA

If you have animals, have a plan

Always be well prepared before an emergency becomes your reality This is the second in a two-part series on preparing for emergencies regarding your household including your pets. ogs and cats are not the only pets of note – there are many bird, reptile and large animal owners as well. The Pet Safe Coalition Society of Canada works to ensure that all animals are kept safe in times of need. Here are a few more tips to help you prepare: •Have an emergency kit for every pet, with fresh food and water. Bird owners should expose their pet to a wide variety of food because, in an emergency, many foods may be unavailable. •Arrange an out‐of‐area contact person. Keep this and other emergency phone numbers or e-mail addresses in your kit and on your person. Notify that person of the tags

D

Crooked Leg Tails and details for all of your animals. •During stress, animals might act differently. They are sensitive to changes such as: weather, new smells or sounds, new people, unusual objects and surrounding stressful behaviour. Be ready to keep your pet calm with favourite toys, with an object that has your scent or by playing a favourite game. •If possible, evacuate with your pet. Don’t leave it behind, even if going for a short time, because animals may prevent emergency rescuers from doing their job.

•Keep pet carriers and crates handy. •If you plan on sheltering animals, keep it stocked with at least four litres of water per animal. Think to have two litres for drinking and two more for food preparation and washing. Depending on your water source, you may want to keep water purification tablets available. •Make a bleeding kit in a small Ziploc. Include sterile gauze, gauze roll, vet wrap, triangular bandages and popsicle or chopsticks for immobilizing. Cuts and other bleeding injuries can easily happen. •Exchange keys and make arrangements with a neighbour to evacuate each other’s pets in an unexpected local disaster. Agree on a meeting place. •Small mammals, like gerbils, should be transported in secure carriers suitable for maintaining

Make Your Home Safe for Independent Living Are you a low-income senior or a person with a disability who wants to live safely and independently in the comfort of your home? Do you have difficulty performing day-to-day activities? Does your home need to be adapted to meet your changing needs? If so, you may be eligible for financial assistance under the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program. Find out today if you are eligible and if you meet all of the requirements as a low-income homeowner or as a landlord applying on behalf of an eligible tenant. To apply or learn more, visit

www.bchousing.org/HAFI You can also contact BC Housing:

the animals. Take bedding materials, bowls, food and water bottles with you. •In an emergency, snakes can be transported in a pillow case, but ensure that they are transferred to more secure shelter as soon as possible. If your snake requires frequent feedings, carry food with you. Take a bowl, large enough for soaking and a heating pad for comfort. When transporting a lizard, use a secure crate or carrier. In cold weather, wrap a blanket over the carrier and warm the car before placing the lizard inside. •Parrot owners should keep an up-to-date list of instructions for your bird’s care and make it visible. Include contact information for your avian veterinarian and parrot’s alternative caregivers. Record your parrot’s name, species and identifying characteristics. A photo is a great addi-

tion. Detail instructions for how to handle your parrot, how to feed it (including any treats or preferences), where to find doses and times for medications and any words, whistles or noises that your parrot will recognize. Keep documentation handy. •For horses – if you must turn your horses loose – do not halter them because life threatening situations might arise if the halter catches and tangles. A good idea is to spray paint the horse’s name and contact information on them. •Who will look after your animals if something should happen to you? Have you made arrangements for them? No one wants to think about their own mortality but it is reality. Please don’t let you animals end up in a shelter or abandoned if you are no longer able to care for them.

As well, please don’t assume that family will care for them. •Make plans to ensure the safety of all of your animals. During a recent evacuation, a farmer with eight horses only had a two horse trailer. The choices were very difficult. In order to avoid this kind of scenario, if an alert is issued, begin moving larger animals early so that all animals are adequately dealt with. •Think of all hazards! Find hotels, friends or extended family that will commit to take your pets when necessary. A public pet friendly shelter should be your last choice – not your plan. If you have animals – have a plan. Contact pscsc@hotmail. ca or http://www.petsafecoalition.ca/ if you would like more information. – submitted by Liz-Anne Eyford

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Try to find some fire perspective on what is important in your life

I

t’s fire season in the Cariboo. Time for breathing smoke and checking wildfire updates. Wildfires out of control have a way of changing your patterns and priorities. It has become our habit each summer to pack things that have meaning to us into our pick-up truck and leave it in town whenever we go away. At

home away. Living in the bush with no fire protection makes us consider what is most important if we had to choose to save only a few possessions. I have realized that I actually pack up less each year. As I grow older, less of my ‘stuff’ is important and the truck is more empty each season. Contemplating my ‘stuff’ leads to asking the bigger

questions about what is important in my life. Where are my priorities? What in my life is really worth focusing on and what will last? A poem reads: Only one life, ‘twill soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last. One day, death will come like a consuming fire and burn up all the ‘stuff’ of our lives. How much of what I spend my

time and energy on will last through that fire? Only what I’ve done for Christ. When I leave ministry what will remain is the love of Jesus that I’ve been able to share with people here. What will endure of my legacy in my family will be how well I poured out my faith in Jesus into my children and eventually grandchildren. They say

you can’t take anything with you, but we can leave with more than we came with as we grow in our love for Jesus and we leave that behind for others when we go. I hope you can get some fire perspective on what is important in your life, what will last. Shannon Bell is a pastor with the Cariboo Presbyterian Church in Nazko.

The end is just the beginning for Cycling 530 B

y reaching their destination of BC Children’s Hospital, Archie Sull and Rob Gardner along with the Sull family are already planning and working on the 2015 Cycling 530 tour for BC Children’s Hospital. The success we had in raising awareness of BC Children’s Hospital and the amount that was raised locally and from around the province for pediatrics and neurology has solidified that the cause must continue.

Cycling 530 We had a goal of $10,000 and the night before we cycled to BC Children’s Hospital Balj Sull had updated the BC Children’s Hospital Superhero’s Website and Cycling 530 was at $15,000.

The team was excited that we not only surpassed our goal but at the same time knowing that our cycling event had rallied other communities around the province. The next morning after our interview with a local radio station we began the final preparation to cycle to BC Children’s Hospital. Cycling 530 lead car driver Gurnek (Gary) Sull and father of Archie Sull presented Rob and Archie with a matching grant to what had been raised, $15,849.79

bringing the total to $30,849.79. This journey started as Jaden Sull had inspired us to do something for a hospital that not only cared for her but for many in our beautiful community of Quesnel. We are very proud and humbled by the tremendous support that our community gave us and as well carried us to BC Children’s Hospital. We have endless stories that have touched our hearts and more importantly motivated us to keep the event

going and to keep up the awareness of BC Children’s Hospital. Many of our local community members have visited or know of someone that has been in Children’s Hospital. The total for 2014 as of July 30 is $31,393.58. We hope to match or even surpse that amount for 2015. If any cyclists or aspiring cyclists would like more information please message us on Facebook and we can be found at Ques Cycle. From the team and

A week in hell

August 3 - 9, 2014

In preparation for the upcoming Regionals and Provincial competitions the Quesnel SeaLions took to the water for a week intensive training. The training session, Hell Week, took place from July 21 – 25. It included 10 swim practices and five dry-land sessions amounting to three and half hours of swimming practice and an hour and half of dry-land training each day. Eighteen of the 30 SeaLions heading to Regionals took part in Hell Week. Regionals will be hosted in Prince George Aug. 2 – 3, serving as a qualifier for the Provincial Championships in Kamloops Aug. 15 – 17 with the top three swimmers in each of the eight divisions at Regionals moving forward. Coach Chris McGauley is confident in the strong group of swimmers who are attending Regionals in Prince George and is anticipating several SeaLions to move on to Provincials. “I’m hoping to go for a few provincial records as well as many group records,” said McGauley. Hell Week participants display the towels earned after five days of training. Contributed photo

Swim in for the win WHITNEY GRIFFITHS Observer Reporter Swimming into the AA Long Course Provincials in Victoria, held June 19 – 22, were Waveriders Billy Swyers and Natasha Hanson with both athletes facing off against older competition at the meet. Though provincial standards start at age 11, accomplished swimmer 10-year-old Billy Swyers has already reached the standards required. Having already qualified for the AA’s, Swyers’ goal is to soon reach the AAA’s standing. Training hard during practice and with six years of swimming experience, Swyers took on the competition in Victoria. Swyers swam in for four personal best times, also jetting into 11th place in the 100m backstroke, the 400m freestyle and the 200m freestyle, as well as placing 10th in the 100m freestyle. Hardwork paid off for this athlete with one of the highlights of the competition was qualifying to swim in the finals for the 50m freestyle. Though Swyers went into the finals in eighth place, his effort and determination launched him ahead of the competition, landing him in seventh place overall for the 50m freestyle. “I liked the pool because it felt fast,” Swyers said regarding his experience at the AA Long Course Provincials. “We got to warm up and cool down in the dive tank and I enjoyed spending time with the kids from other swim clubs in the province.”

Also attending the event was 14-year-old Natasha Hanson. Having spent two and half year swimming competitively and already reached AA’s standing for 15-year-olds Hanson hopes to try for AAA in the upcoming season. “I really enjoyed the meet,” Hanson said. “I made way more finals than I thought I was going to. Most of the time I was really close to my personal best times but didn’t make as many as I wanted.” Although she didn’t make the personal best times she was hoping for, Hanson made it into the finals four times during the meet. In the 200m freestyle, Hanson’s efforts earned her 13th place, she also took home 11th in the 100m freestyle and seventh place in the 800m freestyle. In the finals for the 50m freestyle Hanson launched ahead, starting in seventh place and finishing in fifth. Hanson was diving into the water again recently, travelling to Nanaimo July 17 – 20 for the 2014 B.C. Summer Games to participate in the swimming events. The next events for the Waveriders were the AAA Provincials in Victoria July 3 – 6 and the Open Water Championship on July 7 at Thetis Lake, both events were attended by Quesnel athlete Garnet Currie. Currie later attended the B.C. Summer Games, for the second time. Previously he had participated in the swimming events and opted to take on the Triathlon event in the 2014 Games.

It’s off to the 11 and under AA Provincials in Newton, July 31 – Aug. 3 for the Quesnel Blue Jays. The AA Mosquito team has been blazing through the competition winning five of their nine games played so far, with two losses and one tie. “We started practicing together at the beginning of May,” coach Ron Miciuk said. “But we really put it together in the third week of June.” The team recently travelled to Kamloops for a tournament where they rang in their first loses of the season, winning only one of the three games played. They later played Kamloops on their home field, tying with the visiting team. The Blue Jays have triumphed over the team from Prince George, playing and winning four games in the last month. The Quesnel Blue Jays first game of the provincial competition is against South Surrey followed by a match against the host team from Newton. The next day they are matched against Penticton and Aldergrove. The Blue Jays are currently the only AA provicial 11 under team in the north and were invited to the provicials and will be the north representatives for province.

Ernie & Ilyn Lybeck celebrated their 69th Wedding Anniversary as best man and maid of honour for their grandson Trent Lybeck and his lovely bride Gail. Trent asked his 94 year old grandpa and his dear grandma to witness their wedding on such a special occasion. Ilyn & Ernie felt good to be part of another special occasion on their anniversary. It was a beautiful day with the wedding taking place in Merle & Elaine Rudniski’s lovely yard. A special thank you to Merle and Elaine for everything and to Fred and Bernice Robelord for the lovely cream can supper. Also to Rev Gary Lybeck, Ernie’s brother for the lovely service. I Will Never Untie My “Knot of Love” For You Spring

Through smiles and laughter, pain and sorrow, my love for you, you can always borrow.

As the beauty of Spring towers over the Earth,

This precious thing called “Love” that I have for you,

We can always capture numerous signs of birth... The days are warm with more light to gain,

won’t fade away or die and will always remain so true. When my heart gets stabbed and is torn apart, still my love for you will forever come flowing from my heart.

With April bringing showers of fresh smelling rain. Hearing birds singing their pleasing and harmonizing song, Oh how I could listen to them all day long.

Every drop of blood in me is full of love for you, and not one tear of regret will keep it from running through. Just telling me that “You love me” sets my heart aglow,

Each bud on the trees are thriving to become leaves, While flowers begin to bloom to form a pattern each one weaves.

and the seed within me – for you it shall always fondly grow. From the beginning and to the end I promise you this, I will keep our “Knot of love” safe and seal it with my kiss.

Our eyes glisten with glee and true joy, When we happily welcome a newborn – girl or boy. I see people going for walks and a bike ride or two, So much to be thankful for and so many things to do!

Welcome to the driver’s seat

Visit the 2015 Challenger gallery at DrivewayBC.ca

Challenged by one Hellcat of a muscle car Portland, Oregon – Do I take the red key or the black key? The black key limits horsepower to 500. Jaws drop. If you put it in valet mode, rpms are limited to 4,000. Gosh, I really hope I can take the red key… This Matrix-like conundrum is a good one to have. Take the safer route (black key) if you’d rather ease off on harnessing the gargantuan horsepower of the 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat. It’s the most powerful production Chrysler V8, as well as the most powerful production muscle car to date, so it needs to be treated with respect. But then again, the red key will allow me to tame this muscled feline one shift at a time, whether through the 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic. Looks like the decision has been made for me. Red key is sitting pretty in the centre console. And it’s in track mode. Electronic intervention is minimal. I

have access to all 707 horsepower and I’m at the Portland International Raceway. I’d say this will be a heavenly day. With a new look on the inside and outside, the 2015 Dodge Challenger is ready to take on its Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro competition head-on. According to market research, two thirds of Challenger buyers say they don’t cross-shop anything else. That said, those who did cross-shop, and decided to go in another direction, attributed it to its archaic interior. That problem is no more. Now Challengers come with a driver-centric and cool-looking interior setup. Whether you have the standard 5-inch touchscreen or the optional 8.4-inch (the biggest touchscreen in its segment), you can’t lose. Then there’s a new 7-inch multi-view driver information display instrument cluster that adds to the chic execution; standard

on all models. Not to mention, it displays all the vital stats that you’ll need when driving. Combined with physical buttons – for those who don’t like to control everything by a screen – its evolutionary changes certainly help its cause. A lot. But the heart of the Challenger lies underneath its sheet metal – the curves and edges that were inspired by the ’71 Challenger. When it comes to engine choices, you’re not without options. There are four.

different packages – the thing that stood out the most to me is how good of a car it actually is. 2014 Toyota Highlander.

Life in the fast lane gets faster BC drivers are getting used to a faster life in the fast lane very quickly. News of the hike of 10 km/h to the posted speed limit on long stretches of major highways was announced swiftly the other weekend, taking many by surprise. By Sunday, I was taking a 2014 Toyota Highlander for a faster spin on the Okanagan Connector/Coquihalla Highway route than I had expected when I headed to Kelowna Simple math and days earlier. What was still more surprising was that the rudimentary physics signage reflecting the higher speed limits was already up. teaches us that the (I’ve never see the provincial government bureaucracy move so fast!) harder people hit, the This was not going to be a trip to try to prove or disharder they fall. prove Toyota’s boast that the 3.5-litre V6 under the hood would, with the aid of the six-speed auto transmission, Keith Morgan

‘‘

’’

transport me to the coast sipping just 8.2-litres for every 100 klicks travelled. No, I would be calling on all 270 horses to do more than canter up those steep hills that separate the Okanagan from the Lower Mainland. Climbing to the Pennask summit was a quiet and fast run. The cruise control was set to the maximum limit of 120 km/h . . . . . . and I was passed by everyone on the road! Some things don’t change. Hike the limit and most drivers will tack on another 10 klicks. I passed a few nervous folks, who seemed determined to stick to the defunct maximum of 110. Speed differential is what causes big problems on the highway. If there is a wide variation and people

are not showing lane discipline i.e. keep right unless passing, that’s a recipe for disaster as impatience and frustration takes over. I tacked on another five klicks so as not to be too far out-of-sync with my fellow travellers. However, along stretches of the Coquihalla, my 125 wasn’t enough to satisfy the need for speed exhibited by many others. On the straights, 130 was the low end and I figure that most who passed me were travelling at nearer 140. The descent to Hope was like a racetrack but then it always is. In the days that followed, the anti-speed lobby woke up and took to the airwaves with dire warnings of increased carnage. Simple math and rudimentary physics teaches us that the harder people hit, the harder they fall. Let’s hope the poor driving practices that lead to such collisions don’t increase and reprove such a simple truth. p.s. I achieved 9.5 L/100km on the journey home. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Drives-U-Crazy New drivers Oh no, another generation of drivers guaranteed to drive you crazy are on their way. Pulled up the other day alongside a driver training school car.
