The Whitetail Brook fire, now at 650 hectares, is visible from Canal Flats but continues to burn away from the community.

Hot, dry weather leads to numerous forest fires around Cranbrook, Kimberley SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff
There were 14 fires burning around Cranbrook and Kimberley Thursday thanks to hot, dry conditions and several lightning storms. Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park will remain closed for the long weekend as 63 firefighters continue to battle the now 650-hectare Whitetail Brook fire. There are three water tenders, three helicopters and
eight pieces of heavy equipment working to contain it, though growth continues to be to the northeast, away from Canal Flats. No communities or structures are threatened. Whiteswan Forest Service Road is closed from the highway to the 32-kilometre mark. Kootenay Forest Service Road is also closed from the three-kilometre mark to the junction with White Rock Forest Service Road at 34.5 kilometres. And
White Rock Forest Service Road is entirely closed. As well as the closure of Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park and its popular campsite, the road closures mean there is no access to Top of the World Provincial Park. There are another eight smaller fires in the Whiteswan area, all lightning caused, ranging in size from 100 square metres to a 10 hectare fire just northeast of
Whiteswan Lake. Meanwhile, the Wildfire Management Branch has managed to contain a 10-hectare fire near Koocanusa. Caused by lightning, the Kikomun Creek fire was detected on Tuesday, July 29 and actioned by 10 firefighters, air tankers and helicopters, with the assistance of the Jaffray/ Baynes Lake fire department.

A new agreement will see the City of Kimberley and the College of the Rockies collaborate on research opportunities and student training at the SunMine. The City of Kimberley has a number of partners and funders in its innovative SunMine project, including Teck, EcoSmart, the Columbia Basin Trust and more. Another partner on board will be the College of the Rockies. “The idea is that as we demonstrate Kimberley’s viability for solar generation, we need people to work in the industry,” said City CAO Scott Sommerville. “The College has a small solar component in their electrical program and they are looking to expand. We thought the SunMine would be a great place to bring students for tours and research.” The College of the Rockies and the City of Kimberley have an opportunity to collaborate on research opportunities, says Mayor Ron McRae. It’s not a financial agreement, more like a memorandum of understanding, he said. The College of the Rockies, having earned eligibility for research
David Walls
grants through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), can provide access to funding opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to the project. “The College looks forward to working with the City of Kimberley and EcoSmart in exploring training and applied research opportunities together,” said College of the Rockies President and CEO David Walls. “College of the Rockies will be seeking opportunities to engage our students in projects like SunMine. Due to the investment in trades capital funding over the past few years by the Provincial government, we have had the opportunity to expand our curriculum to include solar technology for some of our programs.”

John Telman’s work “Making the Connection” was released last week Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
A Cranbrook pastor has just released his second book, “Making the Connection: Discovering Who God Really Is”. John Telman, pastor at Abundant Life Pentecostal Church in Cranbrook for the past five years, says the book is designed to inspire people. “It’s a book to spark people’s thoughts about the creator – who God is – and personally investigate who God is,” said Telman. The 138-page book is broken down into 45 short chapters that explore the traits of God. “It’s an interactive book. I’m not trying to tell people how to believe. I want to inspire people and allow for things to happen in peo-
John Telman ple’s lives without a dogmatism where I tell people this is how you should believe, this is what you should do,” said Telman. Originally from Edmonton, Telman worked as a worship pastor for 20 years in Canada, the U.S., Singapore and Colombia, before settling in Cranbrook. It was while he was in Singapore that Telman began working on “Making the Connection”. “In a time of prayer I believed that God said, ‘There is so much misinformation about who I am, and I just want you
to let people know who I am through how I am going to reveal myself to you in multitudes of ways.’” He said the book is suitable for both people in the pews and people on the streets. “Whether someone is a Christian, whether they are atheist, it’s a very non-judgemental book and a non-pushy book.” Telman’s first book, “God’s Riches and My Two Cents’ Worth”, was published 10 years ago. He has already started work on a third book, co-written with local author Kerry Pocha, titled “The Book of Easy Answers”. “It investigates the troubles, the problems and the challenges that people have in their life and how God has an answer for them. God’s answers are easy; I just don’t like what his answer is,” said Telman. You can find “Making the Connection” at Nails Christian Bookstore and Coles in Cranbrook.

Southeast Fire Centre crews with the assistance of Jaffray/Baynes Lake fire department fought a 10-hectare wildfire near Koocanusa on Wednesday, July 30. The fire is now in the mop-up stage.
Connect with us
cbt.org/schoolworks
Wildfires blaze through region Continued from page 1
The fire is now in the mop-up stage, and firefighters are on scene doing back burning, where they do a controlled burn from the perimeter towards the fire to eliminate fuels. There is also a small fire nearby, 11 kilometres south of Baynes Lake. A three-person attack crew was working on that fire, also lightning caused. Elsewhere in the East Kootenay, a small fire is burning near Finley Creek, west of Canal Flats, and another small lightning-caused fire southwest of St. Mary Lake.
The Wildfire Management Branch is urging those who are camping this weekend to be extra careful with campfires as crews are busy with naturally caused fires, and human-caused fires are preventable. Bring a shovel or keep at least eight litres of water nearby to properly extinguish your campfire. Campfires cannot be larger than 0.5 metres in height and 0.5 metres in diameter. Do not light a campfire or keep it burning in windy conditions. Weather can change quickly and the wind may carry embers to
other combustible material and start new fires. You must maintain a one-metre fireguard around the campfire. This is a fuel-free area where all flammable materials (grass, kindling, etc.) have been removed. Never leave a campfire unattended. Make sure that the campfire is completely extinguished and the ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the area for any length of time. To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call 1 800 6635555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
COTR signs sun mine agreement with Kimberley Continued from page 1 Walls said the Sun Mine will provide opportunities for experiential learning for these programs. “The SunMine will be the largest solar facility west of Ontario
and has the potential to become a key industry in the area. The College is committed to pursuing joint priorities and combining strengths, expertise and resources with the
City of Kimberley and EcoSmart as this project comes to fruition,” Walls said. With over 4,000 solar modules generating 1.05 Megawatts of energy, SunMine will be Western Canada’s
largest solar project. SunMine is situated on reclaimed land on the former Teck Sullivan Mine concentrator site. Construction is underway and plans are to be producing power by early 2015.
Cranbrook service clubs donate $1,500 to support DARE program SUBMITTED
Three Cranbrook service clubs donated a total of $1,500 during the 2013-14 school year to help Local RCMP teach the internationally recognized Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program to local Grade 5 or 6 school children. Following are the three clubs that made contributions to cover cost of the students learning materials: The Rotary Club of Cranbrook ($500), The Kin Club of Cranbrook ($500)
and the Fraternal Order of Eagles ($500). RCMP Sgt. Gus Papagiannis, who oversees D.A.R.E. program in BC said that over 200 police officers teach D.A.R.E. each year to thousands of BC school children to equip them with the critical thinking and life skills necessary to choose a drug-free life. While police officers teach the program, the cost of the student learning materials is covered by community donations so the pro-
gram can be offered free to all students. Sgt. Papagiannis said D.A.R.E. BC, a registered charitable organization, helps raise funds within each community to cover the cost of the student learning materials. “We are very grateful to the three Cranbrook service clubs for their generous donations to D.A.R.E. BC to cover the cost of learning materials for the students who took the program during the 2013-2014 school year,” he said.

PUBLIC NOTICE Notice is hereby given that the Municipal Council of the Corporation of the City of Cranbrook, pursuant to Section 94 and 226 of the Community Charter, intends to amend “City of Cranbrook Downtown Revitalization Tax Exemption Bylaw No. 3746, 2012”. The proposed amendment will replace Schedule ‘B’ Revitalization Tax Exemption Agreement and Schedule ‘C’ Revitalization Tax Exemption Certificate of Bylaw No. 3746 with a revised Schedule B and Schedule C. The revisions to the schedule templates are intended to provided clearer language and reduce the potential for ambiguity. Specifically, the proposed wording will clearly indicate that the tax exemption applies to the municipal portion payable on the amount of the increase in assessed value of the improvements with respect to a Tax Roll year. The reason for the tax exemption bylaw is to encourage revitalization of the downtown core in the City in consideration of the lack of residential uses within the general downtown area that discourages business growth due to a lack of customers. The tax exemption bylaw is intended to assist in achieving the City’s objectives of encouraging new investment in the revitalization area to enhance the economy, bring more residents to live in the downtown and to make the downtown more appealing to both residents and visitors. The objectives for the program enabled by the Bylaw include: • Encourage new commercial investment in the downtown core to enhance the local economy • Encourage the development of mixed use commercial / residential to promote a more vibrant downtown by adding a residential population that supports local businesses • Encourage downtown businesses to enhance or redevelop their interiors and exterior facades adding to the beautification and visual interest in the downtown core The Revitalization Tax Exemption program applies to properties zoned C-1, Community Commercial Zone, C-2, Highway Commercial Zone and the C-5, Shopping Centre Zone, as defined in City of Cranbrook Zoning Bylaw No. 3737, 2012, as amended from time to time, within the area identified on the map in Bylaw 3746, 2012. The types of activities, qualifying threshold values, amounts of exemption, and maximum term for a Tax Exemption are not being amended. The maximum term of a Tax Exemption shall be 5 years subject to issuance of a Tax Exemption Certificate by the Director of Finance & Computer Services. A copy of the proposed bylaw “City of Cranbrook Downtown Revitalization Tax Exemption Amendment Bylaw No. 3808, 2014” may be inspected between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, up until August 18, 2014 at City Hall, 40 – 10th Avenue South Cranbrook BC, or downloaded from the City’s website at http://www.cranbrook.ca Municipal Clerk

$40 a day for parents if strike drags on Tom Fletcher Black Press
If the teacher strike isn’t settled by September, the B.C. government will use the payroll savings to pay $40 per missed school day to parents of children under 13, Finance Minister Mike de Jong said Thursday. Negotiations with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation remain stalled after a two-week strike in June that cost the province’s 40,000 public school teachers $12 million a day in salary. That’s the estimated cost of the support program aimed to go to tutoring or daycare for younger children if they can’t go to school. De Jong said older children don’t require as much supervision, and have online options to maintain their studies if the labour dispute takes more instructional time away. The amount was chosen to compensate families of 300,000 children up to age 12 in public school at no net cost to the provincial budget. Parents would have to register online to be eligible for compensation, to be paid by October.
De Jong said there are five weeks remaining in the summer break for most public schools to reach a settlement with the BCTF, and he hopes the program won’t be needed. De Jong reiterated that there is no plan to recall the B.C. legislature before a fall session scheduled to begin Oct. 6. He said the history of imposed of settlements on the BCTF may have contributed to the chronic failure to negotiate agreements with the union. NDP education critic Rob Fleming called the announcement a “trial balloon” that suggests the dispute may be months away from resolution. “I think parents are going to look at this and say, ‘you know what, school is not daycare’,” Fleming said. Education Minister Peter Fassbender and school district negotiators say the BCTF’s contract demands are far out of step with other unions, particularly on increased classroom preparation time and other benefit improvements. The long-running dispute over class size and special needs support is headed back to court this fall.
Chinguetti: City of Libraries It is almost gone. The creep of the Sahara Desert has finally caught up with Chinguetti, a small village in Mauritania, West Africa. Harsh winds have been shifting the Sahara southward at about 30 miles per year. The unforgiving sands currently all but cover Chinguetti’s abandoned buildings and homes. In little over a decade the village will be buried without a trace. A small population still lives in the least damaged part of Chinguetti, hanging on to their ancestral homes, dependent on the only industry left to them: tourism. Tourism? While it may seem odd that a sand-buried ghost town in the middle of nowhere (literally — the one road to get to it is passable only by Humvees or Land Rovers; it is too harsh even for camels), is able to rely on tourist dollars, Chinguetti remains the most visited place in the entire country. In Arabic, Chinguetti means ‘The City of Libraries.’ Books began to be collected in Chinguetti around the 9th century. By the 13th century, The Friday Mosque was built, making it one of the Seven Holy Cities of Islam. A natural place for pilgrims to stop on their way to Mecca, this unassuming village soon became one of the most important trade routes during the middle ages. As books began to flourish so did the buildings needed to house them, and the City of Libraries really was just that. Even as late as the 1950s, Chinguetti boasted 30 libraries — all containing texts preserved throughout the centuries. Today there are only a handful of libraries, operated out of homes of residents refusing to leave. Even these few still house numerous medieval
manuscript written on gazelle skin, bound in vellum. One family continues to oversee tone of the oldest collection of Islamic books in the world. They have not only constructed iron cabinets to protect this priceless collection, but have recently added a table and chairs to create a makeshift reading room. The other libraries, reliant on tourist dollars, have no resourcBOOKNOTES es to protect their treasures. Their colMike Selby lections are kept on open shelves, exposed to the dry air, dust, and rough handling by visitors. Already brittle, this treatment does nothing to preserve them. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) declared Chinguetti a World Heritage Site back in 1996. Besides the libraries, neolithic cave paintings have been discovered there; depicting a time when the City of Libraries was fertile grassland full of wildlife. Even in prehistoric times, the residents were recording and preserving their knowledge. However, UNESCO can do little about the Sahara’s movement. The Mauritanian government and the U.S. Peace Corps continue to monitor and aide the last remaining residents, although climate change and ongoing military action continue to hinder efforts. Where the residents will relocate to, and what will happen to the remaining priceless books is unknown. What is known is that in little over a decade, the City of Libraries will be no more. Whatever tickles your fancy

hat could be better to do on a hot August day than chase an 11-pound wheel of cheese down a hill? You could do just that at the Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival, held in mid-August for the past seven years in Whistler. Cheese chasers gather at the top of a hill at the ski resort, someone lets loose the cheese, and then they are off, running, tripping, tumbling, to see who will be first to cross the finish line behind the cheese. There are prizes up for grabs, but clearly it’s the experience that counts, isn’t it? The race – now billed as a Canadian tradition – actually came from an English festival that has been going on for centuries in Gloucestershire. Somehow that makes more sense: a bunch of British louts trying to catch runaway cheese. This festival is among many traditions from all over the world where people try to mess with each other in strange and humorous ways. Close to home, we have unusual events such as the oddly specific wiener dog races on Sam Steele Days. It’s not that wiener dogs are particularly athletic – though those who have watched the races will know they can move surprisingly quickly for their stature. It’s more about the hilarity of watching those stumpy little legs zip along as the dog seems to fly over the asphalt. It’s my favourite event at Sam Steele Days. Then there’s the Windermere Fall Fair, which – at least last time I was there a few years ago – had a comical event called the Wife Carrying Race. Competitive couples would practise their hold for weeks in advance before the whistle sounded and they
were off, men lugging their lady over their shoulders like a sack of potatoes, or in a less practical fireman’s grip. Elegant it is not, but great fun it is. You can travel the world on a tour of strange festivals around the globe. I would love to take part in Thailand’s Songkran Festival in April, where participants grab their super-soakers, buckets and even elephants to douse each other in the world’s biggest water fight. Equally as fun would be South Korea’s Boryeong Mud Festival, where millions of festivalgoers flop around in mud and fling it Sally at each other. Supposedly MacDonald the mud does wonders for your skin. Getting it up your nose may not be quite as good for your health. Speaking of flinging things, the small Alaskan town of Talkeetna likes to build wooden moose, climb into hot air balloons, and then let fly moose droppings onto the wooden moose below. Sounds like a good day to stay indoors. Then there’s the kooky Tunarama in Australia, where competitors heft heavy tunas with a rope through their mouths and fling them as far as they can. It puts a new spin on flying fish. Also putting food to bizarre use are the Mexicans, whose creepy sounding Night of the Radishes at Christmas time sees locals carve overgrown radishes into elaborate (and disturbing) shapes. Back in England, this time in Devon, the townsfolk celebrate Guy Fawkes Night by lighting a barrel of tar on fire, hoisting it onto their shoulders, and carrying it through the streets. One beefy looking gent will hold onto the barrel until the heat and the weight gets too much, then he’ll pass it off to his mate, who will continue the relay. What a pointless display of
machismo! Then there are the festivals that are so famous they require little explanation – like La Tomatina in Spain, where thousands of smelly backpackers invade the town of Bunyol for a tradition that I’m sure the locals now wish they’d never started – flinging tomatoes at one another until the streets, the buildings, well, everything in the town, is stained red. Or what about Holi, the Indian springtime festival where coloured powder is flung between participants to create a bright, colourful tableau. The festival has inspired a typically North American spin-off – the Colour Me Rad 5K races that dot Canada and the U.S. Runners go through a five-kilometre course where they are periodically doused in coloured chalk to reward their athleticism. And of course, there is the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, where each year runners are gored and bulls are put through a traumatic experience. But the strangest festivals of all are those involving babies. In Japan each April, sumo wrestlers compete not by wrestling, as you might expect, but by holding babies and seeing how long it takes for the child to cry. More disturbing is the Spanish festival of El Colacho in the village of Castrillo de Murcia. Any baby born in the past 12 months is placed on a mattress in the village square, and the macho guys of the area take turns jumping over them. What could possibly go wrong? The moral of the story here is: whatever kind of strange tickles your fancy, there’s a place in the world where people gather to celebrate it. That’s quite a reassuring thought, after all. Summertime and drinking is easy
T
he B.C. government’s move to ease liquor restrictions is undergoing its hot summer test, and music festivals are only part of it. Premier Christy Clark’s government loves its populist gestures, and as with increasing rural highway speed limits, the negative effects have yet to be quantified. Free-range drinking, or removing fences from festival beer gardens, is one of the moves that will be undergoing a post-mortem as communities clean up after their big summer parties. One of the biggest, the Squamish Valley Music Festival with headline acts Arcade Fire, Bruno Mars and Eminem, is still to come, Aug. 8 to 10. Country fans gathered over the long weekend for Sunfest in the Cowichan Valley, with the Rockin’ River Musicfest in Mission coming up next. (Another big bash next weekend is Shambhala, the popular electronic music event on a farm near Nelson, but alcohol is officially banned there and their big issue is controlling the effects of “ecstasy” and other rave drugs.) Early reviews of free-range festivals have been positive. Victoria’s Rock the Shores event went smoothly without a fenced-in area for alcohol sales. Festival

organizers did create a fenced “dry” area, but I’m told hardly anyone used it. Penticton has had its share of experience with summer bashes gone bad. For B.C. Day it inherited the Boonstock Music and Arts festival, sent packing from a small community in Alberta after complaints of rowdy crowds and crime, so Penticton officials were understandably cautious. Boonstock organizers were refused a provincial liquor licence after struggling to arrange security and BC Views emergency services. The festival licence process is Tom likely getting renewed attenFletcher tion these days. After attending the recent Calgary Folk Festival, where the beer garden was securely fenced and the capacity monitored, I’m wondering what is really achieved by these measures. Litter and empties were contained, but since under-aged festival visitors are allowed into the serving area, it’s not clear to me whether the fence was ever worth the effort. It’s unlikely that there will be riots at farm markets as a result of allowing sales of locally made beer, wine and spirits, or from relaxing rules for operation of winery tasting rooms. But there are more reforms to come. New regulations are on the way for the Agricultural Land Reserve. As it stands,
farms are allowed to have a winery or cidery, but not a brewery or distillery. Expect that to be changed as B.C. and other provinces strive to develop their craft beer and spirits industry, trying to emulate the tourism benefits that have come from an expanding wine industry. One area where the B.C. government has screwed up is its minimum pricing rules, introduced along with the overdue move to allow “happy hour” discounts in pubs. The minimum price of 25 cents an ounce for beer, 60 cents an ounce for wine and $3 an ounce for hard liquor was an effort to balance business-friendly policy with legitimate public health concern about over-consumption. But the minimum beer price prompted protests from a few watering holes that had been selling pints or jugs of beer for slightly less. Some media made a big deal of this, and the government over-reacted to this tempest in a beer stein with an ill-thoughtout cut in the minimum price to 20 cents an ounce – for beer in jugs only. The pub industry was not impressed with this bit of knee-jerk populism. Encouraging beer jug sales makes it difficult to see if someone at a table of revelers is being over-served, drinking most of the jug himself. Ticking away the century

n interesting article was brought to my attention recently, straight out of the archives of the Daily Townsman regarding the clock tower mechanism and its 101-year history in Cranbrook. As a followup to the article in the recent July 23 issue about the missed opportunity for a community celebration of the mechanism’s century-long history in Cranbrook, here is a widening of the historical lens back to 1913. On Nov. 6, 1913, the Cranbrook Herald announced that the Raworth Bros. had finished installing the bell in the post office tower on the corner of Baker Street and Norbury Avenue (10th Avenue). “It tolls the hours night and day and serves to remind the late sleeper in the early morning that it is time to be up and going,” the article reads. The bank reported that the merchants are meeting their drafts better since the new clock was installed. In fact, the bell was the crowning touch on the newly built post office building, which housed not only the post office, but also the customs office, a private office and large store rooms for parcels. The fine red pressed brick and grey stone building with the central clock tower sat at the corner of the streets. The new post office was built that year to replace the cramped quarters of the old building. On March 3, 1913, staff made the move to the new building. The post office staff in the new building in 1913 was Post-
master Henderson; Miss Havill, assistant; Miss Leamanm, register clerk; Miss Finley, delivery clerk; Misses Bardgett and Dixon, dispatch clerks. On Jan. 8, 1969, the Cranbrook Courier reported that in the 1950s, the new post office was becoming inadequate for the rapid business growth of the city at the time and a large addition was added to the rear. Again in 1969, space was becoming inadequate and work had begun on a completely new and larger building one block south on 10th Avenue, the post office’s current location. Postmaster Pat Fennessy informed the writer that their staff now consisted of 15 workers in the office and nine mail delivery men, for a total of 24. In 1976 Fennessey told Townsman Editor Dave Kay that the total had almost doubled to 43 employees. The author of the article had concerns about what fate might befall the Baker Street post office building when the new one was complete. “When this structure is completed, this writer is fearful of what might happen to that old building which has housed the post office, customs office, etc. for these many years.” The writer felt it was “one of the finest edifices in town” and hoped it wouldn’t face the same fate as the old Royal Bank building. “We have all too few fine brick and stone structures in Cranbrook, and we de-

plore seeing the bulldozer wrecking any of them.” Of course the article proved to be quite accurate and the demolition took place in 1971. The clock mechanism itself was removed and stored at Fort Steele prior to the demolition. In 1976, when Kay, along with Dan MacDonald, wrote the article, he wistfully looked upon or rather up at the vacant spot where the old post office clock used to be. “If you’ve been a resident of Cranbrook for many years — at least ten or more — do you ever find yourself absent-mindedly looking up to see what time it is on the old post office clock in the corner of Baker Street and Norbury Avenue?” Kay wrote. “It seems of late more and more people are advocating that the old four-faced clock be again set up on a tower in a prominent place somewhere on Baker Street in the downtown area.” Kay suggested the SuperValu lot next to the traffic light on Baker and 11th Avenue or perhaps the north-west corner of Baker Street and Cranbrook Street. “Anyway, folks, let’s get some action and get the project going — and that means you – and you – and you, dear reader.” Of course we all know where it ended up — in the square near Baker Street and 9th Avenue. In 1985, the clock tower was dedicated to the citizens of Cranbrook and sponsored by the Cranbrook Rotary Club. Arne Petryshen is a reporter at the Cranbrook Daily Townsman.

Canada in the mix of contenders for upcoming U-20 Women’s World Cup GREGORY STRONG Canadian Press
TORONTO — Former star striker Kara Lang played at the Under-20 Women’s World Cup on two occasions before devoting her full attention to the Canadian women’s senior team. She still remembers the massive roar of the home crowd when the Canadians walked out on the pitch before 47,784 fans at Commonwealth Stadium in 2002. Lang expects a similar reception for the Canadian team as the host nation at this year’s tournament, which begins Tuesday. “Nothing can compare to that — the level of intensity, the crowd support that you get,’’ Lang said in a recent interview. “I was 15 at the time, the rest of the team was 16, 17, 18-year-olds and to be playing in front of crowds of 50,000 people cheering for you, it’s unlike anything else. “That’s what this team is going to experience as well.’’ Lang’s appearance at the inaugural tournament in Edmonton — at that time it was a U-19 event — came shortly after she made her debut with the senior team. There are several Canadian players who will be in a similar position for the 2014 tournament, which will be played Aug. 5-24 in Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal and Toronto. Midfielder Jessie Fleming has suited up for the senior team before and also played at the U-17 competition. Canada held a camp in mid-July in Mexico and will open the
tournament Tuesday at BMO Field with a Group A game against Ghana. Canada will play Finland on Friday in Toronto before heading to Montreal for an Aug. 12 game against North Korea. Centre backs Kadeisha Buchanan and Rebecca Quinn, fullback Sura Yekka, midfielder Ashley Lawrence and forward Nichelle Prince are the other Canadian players with senior team experience. Defender Kinley McNicoll will serve as captain and Kailen Sheridan is the No. 1 goalie. Canada went 1-2-0 at the 2012 tournament and failed to advance out of the group stage. Andrew Olivieri is back as coach and senior team coach John Herdman is serving as high-performance director. The Canadian program has an eye on the big picture for all youth competitions and this one is no different. Olivieri wants his players to move closer to taking that next step to the senior team and hopefully achieve success along the way. Group B includes the U.S., Germany, China and Brazil. Group C is made up of England, Mexico, Nigeria and South Korea while Group D consists of Costa Rica, France, New Zealand and Paraguay. Germany and the defending champion Americans have combined to win five of the six previous U-20 tournaments while North Korea won in 2006. All three teams are expected to be strong again this year.
The top two teams from each pool advance to the quarter-finals, which will be shared by the four host cities. Moncton and Montreal will host the semifinals and Montreal will stage the final and thirdplace match. The tournament comes a year before Canada hosts the 2015 Women’s World Cup. Olivieri said his squad will be the youngest U-20 team Canada has ever fielded in the tournament. “We’ll be talented but we will be young,’’ he said. “It’s hard to tell how we’ll stack up against other teams.’’ Lang said there are always a few surprise results because it can be challenging to track the development of other national youth programs. She expects Olivieri and Herdman will have the players ready and prepared. “They have really implemented a system and a philosophy of mental toughness,’’ she said. “It really is just based on individual players knowing their roles and focusing on that.’’ Lang’s other U-20 appearance came in Thailand in 2004. She played in two World Cups — in 2003 and 2007 — as well as the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Her eyes still light up when she talks about that magical ride to the final in 2002. “Playing in an international tournament at home in front of Canadian fans — you can’t beat it,’’ she said.

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am writing in the hope that my situation will help other women. A year ago, I started experiencing irregular monthly cycles that would last for 20 days at a time. I also had extreme pain and a rapid heart rate. I was told, “You are going through menopause.” After several months of this, my doctor had some blood work done. He had me go immediately to the emergency room for a blood transfusion. At the hospital, I was given a pelvic ultrasound that showed I had polyps that turned out to be endometriosis. Then my life changed. I was diagnosed with endometrial stromal sarcoma and required a complete hysterectomy. During my surgery, the doctor found a five-pound tumor (which explained my unusual weight gain). I have since endured more than 30 radiation sessions and will continue this treatment until the cancer is gone. I knew I was not yet going through menopause. My symptoms were too extreme. I am grateful that the doctors took the time to figure out what was wrong. I urge all women who are having such symptoms to seek help as soon as possible. Endometrial stromal sarcoma is very treatable. -- Grateful in Indiana Dear Grateful: Thank you for alerting women to be vigilant when it comes to their health. There is a support group for survivors of ESS and their loved ones at ess-sarcoma. com. We hope you will look into it, if you haven’t already. Dear Annie: Would you please print this for grandparents everywhere? Dear Grandparents: You’re killing your grandchildren with your kindness. We understand you love them, but you have to stop pumping them full of sugar. You don’t listen to us, so we’re hoping Annie passes this along. Your grandkids visited the Saturday before Easter, and you made marshmallow treats together. On Sunday, you watched as they hunted for Easter eggs stuffed with candy and chocolate. As a reward, they received overflowing baskets full of more sweets. Dinner was followed by some sort of whipped-creamy dessert so decadent it made our teeth hurt. Christmas was much the same, with mugs of hot chocolate. We’re learning so much about sugar and its potential for harm in our bodies. Yes, everything in moderation, but you have no filters on your moderation. We could understand if you only saw them once a year, but this scenario plays out weekly because you live nearby. Whipped cream, strawberries and syrup is overkill for morning pancakes. Find pleasure with your grandkids in other ways, please. It will make us all feel better. -Dad in Distress Dear Dad: Grandparents want their grandchildren to love them, and they look forward to the excited smiles on the kids’ little faces when they give them sweet treats. They rarely consider the long-term nutritional issues. First talk to your parents and in-laws and ask them to love the children enough to limit their sugar intake, and don’t be afraid to enforce limits on what the kids eat when they are with the grandparents. Then teach your children about the way nutrition plays a role in how strong and healthy they will be. Teach them to say “no, thank you” to Grandma and Grandpa. The nutritional lessons they learn from you will help them throughout life. Dear Annie: “Cranky Canadian” was upset that his stepdaughter, “Justine,” parks herself at their home for two weeks at a time and doesn’t lift a finger. Given that “Cranky” and his wife of six years are both in their late 60s, a change in the family dynamic is unlikely. I suggest a vacation alone for “Cranky” during Justine’s visits. It may make everyone at least partially happy. -- Retired Psychologist Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
