Very few people have not been affected, in some way or another, by chronic illnesses. Some take a proactive approach to change, be it through donating to a cause, or volunteering for a special fundraising effort. Jaquelyn Janzen has taken her proactive approach to the battle against multiple sclerosis and lupus one step further. Make that half a million steps. On Friday, the 25-year-old Black Creek native embarked on her “Embrace the Race” journey. She is running the length of Vancouver Island. From July 31 to Aug. 16, Janzen will run the equivalent of 12 full marathons – one per day, with five rest days along the way – in hopes of raising $50,000 to go towards MS and lupus research.
Janzen, who has only been running for a couple of years, came up with the idea while training for the 2013 GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon – her first-ever marathon, and only official one she has ever run. “I was out running one day, in training for Victoria, and I realized how much I just love running, and thought there should be a purpose for me doing it – to use this for the good of something,” she said.

This is just a way I felt I could show them how much I care for them, and a way I could show them some support.”

She will travel along Highway 19 from Port Hardy all the way to Parksville. At that point, she will move onto the inland highway (19A) as far as Mill Bay, before taking the Mill Bay-to-Brentwood Bay ferry across to Victoria. “We decided running the Malahat on a summer Saturday is probably not the safest idea, so we will catch the ferry, then run through Victoria,“ she said.

Janzen will run through Courtenay on Aug. 9, during her seventh “marathon” of the challenge. She will start in Oyster Bay that day and run through Courtenay en route to her finishing point, in Union Bay. Janzen will return to Courtenay that afternoon for a fundraising barbecue at Brian McLean Chevrolet (11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.) “People can come in, buy a hot dog or hamburger, and all money raised will go towards the cause,” said Skye Zimmerman, community relations manager for Brian McLean Chevrolet. Janzen said her family and friends have been overwhelmingly supportive during her training for the event. “There is a lot more planning and organizing that had to go into all of this than I had originally anticipated,” she said. “All I’ve had to do is train for the event. My family has been absolutely incredible with helping out in every way – from food prep, to media contacts, to everything. My dad built me a shower the other day, so that I can have a shower every day along the way, because we are camping.” Janzen is hopeful the people of Vancouver Island – and beyond – show their support in the next two weeks by donating to the causes.
“I would love to see $50,000 raised between the two causes,” she said. “On our website we have an option of which cause you want to donate to. Neither cause is more dear to my heart than the other. They both mean an awful lot to me.” To donate to Janzen’s efforts, or to join the team as a runner during the event, visit the website at www.embracetherace2014.com.

What is MS? Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system which is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The disease attacks the myelin which is a protective covering wrapped around the nerves of the central nervous system. A long list of symptoms include difficulty in walking and speaking, balance and dizziness, tremors, spasms and mood swings. There is no known cure.
What is lupus? Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue. This results in symptoms such as inflammation, swelling, and damage to joints, skin, kidneys, blood, the heart, and lungs. Lupus is a chronic illness that can lead to sometimes fatal health complications to the heart, lungs and kidneys. It also increases the risk of cancer. –With files from MS Society of Canada and Medical News Today

Courtenay Mayor Larry Jangula and paramedic Ryan Thorburn were behind bars for a good cause Thursday, as the 2014 Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock turned the Walmart parking lot into a makeshift jail, with dignitaries forced to raise bail money to escape the clutches of the law ... or at least, of the Tour de Rock team. The Comox Valley Tour de Rock contingent was there as well, selling T-shirts, ball caps and burgers, all in support of the 2014 Tour de Rock. The CVTDR team camped overnight and stayed onsite until the $5,000 fundraising target was reached.

I was out ❝ running one day,
On Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 6 and 7, the City of Courtenay will be working on road improvements and paving along Fitzgerald Ave. between 21 St. and 26 St. The work is anticipated to take two days, weather permitting; in the event of inclement weather, paving will proceed on the next viable day. On construction days, Fitzgerald Ave. will be subject to intermittent lane closures and single-lane alternating traffic from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be noise generated by the crew and equipment during construction. The City apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this project. Parking in the construction zone will be temporarily restricted; any vehicles left parked on Fitzgerald Ave. in the construction area will need to be towed. Area residents are being notified. All efforts will be made to main-
tain vehicle access to local residences, although there may be times when road closures are necessary. Sidewalks will remain open to permit pedestrian access. Commuters should expect delays in the area of construction; the City recommends alternative routes be used whenever possible. Commuters are requested to use caution and obey traffic personnel and posted traffic signs. During construction, bus stops along Fitzgerald Ave. will be accessible; traffic control personnel will be on hand to assist transit users when required. City crews will assist with garbage pick-up for residents in the work zone on Wednesday, should curbside pick-up fall during the scheduled construction time. This project will not affect the bike lanes installed on another section of Fitzgerald earlier this year. For more info, contact the City of Courtenay Public Works Department at 250-338-1525.

Residents come together for a rally in the Valley Inaugural Great Valley Rally attracts nearly three dozen teams Erin Haluschak Record Staff
They didn’t travel the world, but 34 teams still had an ‘amazing race’ in the Comox Valley on July 26, as the inaugural Great Valley Rally brought participants and the business community together throughout the three municipalities. Styled after The Amazing Race, close to 150 people competed in the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce event, with teams entering in either vehicle (driven) or self-propelled (bicycle or other) divisions. Teams of four or five encountered challenges, check points and business stops throughout Comox, Courtenay and Cumberland, accumulating points, and ending with an afternoon party in the Village. “It was absolutely fabulous. It was more than I imagined and there was so much goodwill,” explained Dianne Hawkins, president and CEO of the chamber.
Above, participants, many of whom were in costumes, gather to hear the rules before the start of the race; bottom left, the Comox Valley Record team makes a senior’s day at Berwick, presenting her with a couple of flower plants; bottom right, two participants prepare the water hose for the Cumberland Fire Department’s challenge. “There was such a good sense of fun and spirit within all of the teams.” Some of the challenges included delivering flowers to residents at the Berwick Retirement Com-
munity or picking up garbage along Comox (Dyke) Road. “We had 30 bags in total of garbage which was just wonderful, and 39 seniors had bouquets. It is very heart warming,” Hawkins added. Teams could also earn bonus points by having team members sign up as monthly donors for the Cumberland Community Forest Society, with 30 people signing up. “We had the idea come about from a brainstorming session and thought it would be a really good
way to embrace the entire community and get people excited. It was meant to be a lot of fun for the entire Valley,” she noted. Hawkins said the organizational team won’t wait too long before beginning to plan next year’s event. “It took a lot of planning … but it all came together. We’re going to look at what we can do better at a wind-up meeting, and we’ve had some great input from teams.” Teams were encouraged to post
photos to social media, using particular hashtags, with organizers receiving more than 1,500 photos throughout the day. Looking ahead to next year, Hawkins said organizers hope to have between 50 to 75 teams participate, and have even more businesses participate in the challenges. For more information or to view a photo gallery of the event, visit the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

Comox Valley knotweed eradication program expanded Submitted A regional program launched last year aimed at reporting and eradicating invasive knotweed species from the Comox Valley was so successful in finding and treating select knotweed locations, that this year the program has expanded to include all four local governments (Town of Comox, City of Courtenay, Village of Cumberland and the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD). This program is in partnership with the Coastal Invasive Species Committee (Coastal ISC) and is asking the public to report sightings of knotweed. The program aims to verify all knotweed reports within the Comox Valley and to provide professionals to conduct treatments on select sites. To report infestations email info@coastalisc.com or call 1-250-857-2472 by Aug. 15, 2014.

Reporting knotweed is very important in all jurisdictions regardless of whether it is growing on public or private lands. By knowing where it is growing the various authorities can map the occurrences and understand the potential for spread of the plant over time. All authorities request that residents report any sightings of the knotweed species.

Improper removal harmful
“Knotweed is a bully in the plant world,” explains Rachelle McElroy, executive director of the Coastal ISC. “It’s an invasive and aggressive plant that spreads easily and can impact proper-

Look for the Knot on My Property program on our website or pick up a booklet from any four local governments to learn more ways to defend your property from invasion.” “This is a great opportunity to work with our local governments region-wide to proactively implement the treatment of knotweed species,” said Edwin Grieve, Comox Valley Regional District board chair. “As it is expensive and difficult to control once it is fully established, this is a cost-effective means to gain effective control before that happens.” A knotweed alert sheet, providing information on identification, proper disposal, and reporting options has been developed and is available on the CVRD website at www.comoxvalleyrd.ca/invasiveplants. Morrison Creek sewer pipe replacement on again The City of Courtenay is taking a second shot at a sewer pipe replacement originally planned for last year. The aging pipe runs underneath a sensitive fish habitat in Morrison Creek, near First Street in Courtenay. The project had to be put on hold in August 2013 after heavy rain resulted in high and early returns of pink salmon in the creek. Work will take place from Aug. 1 to 29, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Saturday, weather permitting. Lesley Hatch, the City of Courtenay’s senior manager of engineering, said addressing environmental concerns is a top priority. “We’re working very closely with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, our contractor, and consultants on this project, and following the advice of a registered professional biologist,” said Hatch. “Morrison Creek is a sensitive ecosystem that is home to a protected Lamprey. It also supports other aquatic species such as salmon and trout, so we need to ensure we’re doing everything possible
to protect it while we perform this necessary work.” Work crews will replace the existing instream concrete pipe with a new flexible plastic pipe. They will also repair a storm culvert on First Street. The work will result in intermittent single lane closures on First Street near Willemar Avenue. Traffic control personnel will be on hand to assist all road users, including cyclists. Commuters are asked to please obey posted signs for the safety of road users and work crews.
The City may also need to extend the work hours for one day in the first week of August to perform bypass pumping on the sewage line. As the sewage line being replaced needs to keep functioning throughout the project, a generator will be required to bypass the line and keep it flowing, possibly overnight. For further information, please contact Matt Sanderson, AScT or Bob Hudson at McElhanney Consulting at 250-338-5495 or the Engineering Division at 250-334-4441, or email engineering@ courtenay.ca.

Three hardcore winners
As for the entertainment, a few of the belts changed hands - some of them more than once. The “Fans bring the weapons” match for the Vancouver Island Hardcore Championship saw the Acadian Assassin lose the title to Stan “The Lumberjack” Boyd after a devastating table shot. Boyd’s reign would be short lived, however, as Hayden used the 24/7 rule to attack and pin him to take the title, before himself being pinned by the recovering Acadian Assassin, regaining and leaving with his title to start a record fourth title reign.
Making a splash
Splash Campbell finally overcame The Chain Gang’s excessive cheating and intimidation to win the ICW Championship after a two-year chase. Commissioner Manno Theos and the injured “Big” Willy Johnson ensured an even playing field.

Put an end to water waste
D
on’t waste another drop of water. Not one. Many residents of the Comox Valley are finally awaking to the fact our wonderful, seemingly endless water source is threatened by overuse and abuse, climate change, and pollution. Just look at our near-dry rivers. Sadly, some locals remain blissfully ignorant of how precious our water supplies are. Education and newspaper ads advising against water use are helping to open their minds, but that’s proving too slow as seen by some folks merrily watering lawns, and even filling swimming pools. Water wasters need far stiffer fines to make them change their ways. Those measures may not be available yet, but bylaw officers should be busy handing out what meagre fines are on the local books now. We’re that close to an Island-wide drought. Stakeholders are already working feverishly to save fish in our rivers. It may be too little, too late. Years of taking our water supplies for granted have seen people power washing sidewalks, running taps while brushing teeth, ignoring yardsprinkling regulations, flushing toilets on a whim, and other apathetic actions unheard of in countries where tap water is unsafe to drink. Many Cowichanians are also buying bottled water — uncontrolled by health-quality laws — as if our aquifers are already empty. They will be if drastic measures aren’t taken now to stop water wasting. It is sadly ironic that while other areas of the country are dealing with flash floods, we, here in Canada’s rainforest, are in desperate need of a rain-filled, low-pressure weather system. Yet, there’s nary a cloud in the forecast, so there won’t be any natural relief anytime soon. Meanwhile, let your lawn burn; sweep your driveway; take short showers; and flush your toilet only when necessary. – Adapted from The Cowichan News Leader Pictorial (Black Press) Record Question of the Week

the poor, the mentally ill and disabled as moral degenerates and we expect them to feel that way about themselves too. Shame on you for being poor! Evidence of this is everywhere. Instead of addressing issues of homelessness and poverty humanely, allowing people in a meaningful way to have a say as much as possible in how their lives will unfold, as in the Housing First model, we tell the poor and homeless what their fate will be. We rub their noses in their own poverty at every opportunity. If they dare speak up, we ridicule them. We deny them a voice at every turn. So, almost to a person, they are cowed into silence and hope beyond hope that things will somehow change for them for the better. Sometimes I despair that attitudes will ever change. If nothing does change it won’t be because of the lack of goodwill among front-line workers, managers and administrators. It will be because of chronic underfunding or misdirected funding. It will also be because we have not yet been able to create systems that transcend our individual organizations so that we speak as one voice, as a community. Government should stop spending money on television ads Dear editor, Hands up those of you who are fed up with seeing TV ads extolling the federal Economic Action Plan or the B.C. government’s Job Strategy plan! And our young people are still leaving the province to get gainful employment.
Letters to the Editor
Send your letter to editor@comoxvalleyrecord.com, or drop it off at the Record office, 765 McPhee Ave. Please keep letters to a maximum of 300 words and sign with your name and hometown. We reserve the right to publish and to edit for space/clarity.
Are these government ads (check those you think apply):
• Propaganda for the party in power • Publicity about how
government works • Promotion of the government and party
• Persuasion that government is working for you These ads are costing us tens of millions of dollars annually, money that could be spent on government programs that directly benefit citizens like Medicare instead of increasing our MSP premiums by four
per cent, Hydro rates by 28 per cent. Hands up those who will remember these when the robocalls start coming for the 2015 election.
Cliff Boldt Courtenay
Readers submit letters sent to feds regarding Middle East conflict Dear Mr. Duncan: I am writing to you as my MP for the Comox Valley. I am appalled by the action of Israel against the Palestinians in Gaza and Canada’s implicit support of this action. What is happening in Gaza is genocide. What else can you call the slaughter of innocent women and children, the bombing of hospitals, destruction of power plants and infrastructure, etc.
These actions by any other civilized nation would be condemned en masse by the rest of the civilized world. What does Canada do? Our Prime Minister makes some feeble comment that “Israel has the right to defend itself.” Fair enough, but where is the comment that the majority of Canadians (if not the majority of people on the planet) urge Israel to use restraint in deploying their 21st century war machine against
an opposition that would have trouble defeating George Custer at the Little Big Horn. Yes, the Jewish people suffered unimaginable atrocities under the Nazis and I understand and support their motto of “Never Again.” However, there is no excuse for them perpetrating atrocities on others.
Dear Mr. Duncan: As a constituent of the riding of Vancouver Island North, and on behalf of many others in this riding, I write to you distressed by Canada’s reaction to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. I would like to urge you to consider immediate actions that the Canadian government must undertake to contribute to a humanitarian resolution in the current crisis in Gaza, Palestine. As you may know, the conflict that started at the beginning of July with heavy shelling from Israel into Gaza, has resulted – at the time of writing – in 1,306 Palestinians dead including 260 children, 18 or younger. I am aware of reports about rockets being shot from Gaza into Israel; three
civilians were reported killed. Fiftythree Israeli soldiers were also killed during the ground invasion of Gaza. This is in wide contrast with the disproportionate massacre of Palestinian civilians and infrastructure destruction in Gaza caused by the IDF. Nothing has been spared. Bombing has included houses, mosques, hospitals, UNRWA schools and, just yesterday, the only major power plant in Gaza. Nothing justifies this level of devastation and outlaw behaviour by an occupying country. Not even security or self-defence! The Canadian government position of unconditional support for Israel makes Canada complicit in the killing of many innocent civilian Palestinians caught in
a conflict of which they are not part. Civilian population is protected under international law even in time of war and, as a Canadian, I expect Canada to uphold and respect international law. I long for the days when Canada enjoyed the respect of many citizens of the world for its courageous stand for human rights and peace. I urge you and your government to re-think its understanding of the tragedy that is unfolding in Gaza. The Canada for which I yearn must always choose to be on the right side of history beyond any political ideology. Let’s not repeat errors of judgment that we will surely regret later. Scott Agur Courtenay

That’s aroma! Garlic festival upcoming The scent of garlic will be wafting through the Comox Valley on Aug. 10. Amara Farm, located at 2641 Kirby Rd., will be hosting its second annual Garlic Festival from 12 - 4 p.m. with even more garlic vendors and garlic-related products. Bring friends, family, and breath mints. “Garlic is such a great crop for the Comox Valley,” cites owner, Arzeena Hamir. “It doesn’t need to be irrigated and is virtually pest-free.” Hamir explains how for many years, imported garlic from China and California had flooded the market but with inferior flavour. “People know that local garlic just tastes better,” she says. This year’s Garlic Festival will feature over 10 varieties of garlic from different farms in the Valley. Amara Farm will be selling their new garlic scape jam, Nature’s Way Farm will have their garlic scape pesto, and Orca Bakery has been asked to develop garlicinfused biscuits. Children will be able to take the plunge into the hay pit and local musicians will entertain visitors in the shade. “Last year we expected about 200 people to come and we were blown away when over 500 showed up!” said Hamir. “So, we’re doubling our parking area and
provided spaces close to the house for folks who have trouble walking.” For any garlic aficionados willing to try fresh garlic, tastings of the different varieties
will also be available. Amara Farm grows Music, Garston’s Plunder and Italian Softneck garlic while other farms will be bringing varieties such as Red Russian and Korean
Red. And if you forget your breath mints, there will be plenty of parsley and mint to nibble on. For more information on Garlic Festival, please contact Arzeena CAMPBELL RIVER

The pure possibilities of the untamed artist Submitted Come and wander the wild garden on Saturday, Aug. 9, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and discover the colourful and lively mixed media paintings of untamed artist, Lisa Kirk. Kirk is a well-known artist and creative process facilitator in the Comox Valley. She will be opening up her tangled garden and home studio to share her artwork for the first time in four years. This show sees some of her newer work as well as some of her older works. Kirk is an intuitive artist, who follows her instinct and what calls to her as she works. Working with music as an impetus to creation, she does not plan her work, but allows it to reveal itself by trusting the process and allowing her to be taken to unexpected places. The mystery and never-ending potential of the creative process continues to provide fertile ground for Kirk’s explorations. There is a strong calling to colour, line and shape for her and that is clear in this body of work. At times, Kirk finds herself working in a series. Portals of Possibilities is a new series of acrylic paintings that have unfolded for her over the last six months. Here, Kirk finds herself revisiting forms from an earlier series, In the Realm of Possibilities, which began as egg shapes and then evolved into circles. In the new series, these circle shapes evoke planetary and cel-
lular themes; there is this connection to the outer and inner worlds that we have, as well as the connections to each other. The idea that we can enter portals to another realm resonates with Kirk on many levels. First, she feels like that is where she goes when she creates – she enters into flow, a place where time stops and she is connected to something deeper that is rich with creative potential. Second, she is interested in the idea that there are many realms other than the one we can see with our eyes. These pieces are full of joy and energy. Kirk loves paint because she can immediately get a rush of colour. However, in the last few years, she has also been absorbed in collaging, often underpainting first, then collaging into the painted surface. At times, she will paint into the collage, and at other times allow the simplicity and beauty of the handmade paper to stand on its own. Kirk pulls from her extensive collection of collage papers; working with Japanese chiyogami and shoji papers, and other interesting papers that cross her path. Sometimes she will use her collection of wood stamps to handprint the papers. There will be pieces from her popular Red and White Dress series as well as many other individual pieces. Her series of colourful mixed media paintings and collages that were created for the show, A Soul’s Journey, at The Old
LISA KIRK with some of her art. Schoolhouse Gallery in Qualicum with artist Kira Neumann in the first two months of 2014 will also be on show. Kirk also has a new series of funky portraits on paper (unframed) that are playful and sure to bring a smile to your face. There is sure to be something for everyone—from tiny works of art, to much larger ones on canvas, wood panel and paper. There will also be notebooks and cards with Lisa’s art on them available for purchase. Lisa Kirk invites all to join her for a memorable show Saturday, Aug. 9, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., 1986 Cumberland Rd., Courtenay.

Van Anrooy at Canadian golf championship
19
WHITECAPS SHOW THE WAY
Earle Couper Record Staff
Tyler Van Anrooy is in action this week at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Golf Championship, which runs Aug. 4-7 at Elmhurst Golf & Country Club and Southwind Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg, Man. The 23-year-old Courtenay golfer placed 27th in the B.C. Men’s Amateur at the Seymour Golf Club in North Vancouver in July. Stepping onto the national stage, Van Anrooy is part of a 240-player field that includes top male amateur golfers from VAN ANROOY throughat Canada, Australia, Colombia, New Zealand and the United States. After the first two rounds (Aug. 4-5) the field will be reduced to the low 70 players and ties for the final 36 holes of the championship, which finishes Aug. 7 at Elmhurst. Follow Van Anrooy at www.golfcanada.ca. The winner of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship earna an exemption into the 2015 RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club.
THE VANCOUVER WHITECAPS held their first Prospects Camp in Courtenay on July 29-30 at Woodcote Park, with players U8 to U15 refining their skills under the watchful eye of Craig Angus (above) and his staff of four coaches. With about 100 players taking part, Angus said the camp was a big success. One of the coaches helping out was the Comox Valley’s own Tony Dickson (left) who is seen helping a young player work out a sore leg. For more info on the Whitecaps’ Vancouver Island soccer program, contact Angus at 250327-1643 or cangus@ whitecapsfc.com.

Tillicum field filling up score board
THIS YEAR’S LADIES Tillicum on Aug. 9 features a country western theme. Entries are streaming in for the Sunnydale tourney.
Entries are streaming in for the Royal LePage Tillicum Ladies Amateur Tournament at Sunnydale Golf Course, to be held Saturday, Aug. 9. At last count we had over 80 registrants with more coming in every day. The format this year is a 2-ball competition for one day only. On Friday, Aug. 8 there will be a horserace at 4:30 followed by the very popular wine and cheese gathering in the clubhouse. On Saturday, Aug. 9 the tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.
Entries are $130 per team and this includes coffee and muffins prior to tee-off followed by lunch and prizes after golfing. We thank our two main sponsors, Royal LePage Realty and Eagle FM 97.3 Radio for their generous donations. For more information contact Eve Kusnick at 250-339-2006. Our theme this year is country and western so round up those wagons and giddyup to Sunnydale Golf Course for a fun-filled shindig. – Sunnydale Ladies Golf
Birdie binge
On just another gorgeous day in the Comox Valley, Crown Isle ladies club had a Pin Day. Low net winner was Raelene Robertson 65, second low net Barb Parker 67. Low gross winner was May Mitchell 82 followed by Rosemary Smith and Val Dingwall 83. KPs #7 Sheila van Gisbergen, #12 Marilyn McCusker. Par 5 Margaret Forgeron. Hot weather brought out lots of ladies scoring birdies, so I am sure lots of birdie juice was consumed. Kudos to Sandy Linhart who has organized our Crown Isle ladies to play interclub with Storey Creek, Sunnydale, Myrtle Point, Comox and Glacier Greens. Even in the pouring rain last Wednesday we held our third position. Our Crown Isle “High Rollers Anonymous” with lots of bling represented us well at Pheasant Glen. Raelene was second low gross. A lively group of 20 ladies ventured to the Storey Creek Crystal Golf Tournament. Val Dingwall won a low
PAR FOR THE COURSE gross prize and Anne Sands won a low net prize. Penguins in August. You bet! The Crown Isle ladies Nine and Wine will have a penguin theme on Aug. 27. The evening includes nine holes of golf, appys, wine or beer, and lots of prizes. To register call the pro shop at 250-703-5031. – Crown Isle Ladies Golf

It is with great sadness at the passing of Rachel Luton known as Tony Luton. She had an amazing life of 94 healthy years, with her vibrant and loving personality she was a joy to all who knew her. Lovingly remembered by her family, those here in Canada, her son Kevin from Prince Rupert, her daughter Delia and son-in-law Ernie von Schilling, three grandchildren, Colin Wilson (Teresa), Annalusie Shields (John) & Laura (Sky) Hellyer (Jason), and her amazing eight great grandchildren. Her family in England, nieces and their husbands, Tessa and Richard Buckley, Sue and Richard Thomas, nephews and their wives, Charlie and Eve Bircham, Robin and Jane Bricham, David and Julia Clayton and many great nieces and nephews and their children. Mum was a great traveler starting early on with trips to Europe as a girl, during WWII she served as a driver for the British Army Medical Core where she met and then married her beloved husband Kenneth and came to Canada to start a new life. Living first near White Rock and then on Salt Spring Island for 45 years. After the passing of Kenneth at age 55, Mum found healing in friendships formed with her bridge playing and travelling. Tony visited places such as China, Australia, biblical journey to Israel, Ireland and many trips back to England to see her family. She was just back in June for a three week visit and had a grand time. Her favourite pastimes were yoga, walking, hiking, playing bridge, reading and volunteering. Many organizations benefitted from the giving of her time and energies, the following clubs on Salt Spring Island, Garden, Historical, Hiking, Weavers Guild, the Legion, and Hospice vigilance healing touch sittings. She moved to be close to her family in Courtenay and she volunteered at the Sid Williams Theatre, Evergreens Seniors Centre. Her biggest love was for her family which she spent lots of time with both here and in England. Mum will be missed. The family wishes to thank all the compassionate staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their care, and Joanne Paulson from Hospice for her support. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Comox Valley Hospice Society in her name would be appreciated. A Celebration of Tony’s Life will be held at Piercy’s Funeral Home at 2:00pm Wednesday, July 30th.
Thank You!
I want to thank my family for the wonderful surprise 90th birthday party. All the friends and relatives who came to share it with me and for the beautiful cards, flowers, and gifts. It was very much appreciated and one I’ll never forget. Kind regards, Mildred Coe

Kenneth Cecil Whitley
Kenneth Cecil Whitley died peacefully in his sleep early Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Parkstone nursing home. Kenneth was born on February 5, 1921 at Southfields, Wandsworth, UK. He graduated from The Elliott Grammar School and trained as a Certified General Accountant. During the Second World War, he was a member of the Home Guard throughout the Home Counties for the duration. He married Pamela Nunan in 1943. After the war, he became a Certified General Accountant, and in 1948 a junior partner in the firm Goodman & Whitley. In 1956, the family emigrated to Vancouver BC, where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte, Plender, Haskins & Sells. In 1959, the family moved to Courtenay on Vancouver Island, where Ken took over an independent accountancy practice that continued well into the 1980s when he “retired to administer the Glacier View Nursing Home in Comox. In Courtenay, Kenneth became a devoted member of the local Rotary Club, serving several times on its executive and as District Governor for the Pacific Northwest in 1967. He was active in local politics and served on the local school board as well as many boards and commissions. In his leisure time, he was a member of the Upper Island Sports Car Club and fervent Jaguar owner, besides his enthusiasm for messing around in boats as a member and sometime President of the Comox Valley Power Squadron. In 2001, fully retired, Pam and Ken moved to Bedford, Nova Scotia, to be closer to his son and his family- and to indulge in “one last Jaguar before I die- an XJ12. He was predeceased by his sisters, Pamela Whitley and Gwenn Belcher, and by Pamela, his wife of more than sixty years. He is survived by his son, Raymond; his daughter in law, Judith; his granddaughter, Emma; his niece, Jane Hearne (Paul); and their daughter, Natasha. At Kenneth’s explicit request, his body has been cremated, and there will be no formal funeral. In lieu of other memorials, his family encourages donations to the QEII Hospital Foundation www.qe2foundation.com/en/home/ donatingtotheQEII/inmemory.aspx. They would also like sincerely to thank the staffs of Parkstone and of Drummond Hall who were so very attentive, empathetic, and tolerant during Kenneth’s residence in both institutions.

At a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Courtenay, Mina Hang was presented with a $2,000 scholarship and certificate from the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada. Mina attended G.P. Vanier Secondary School and will be starting a degree program in Business Studies at Simon Fraser University in the fall. The presentation was made by Wendy Harris, the club president.
Terry Wasiliew (above, right) was the 2014 recipient of the Derek Wright Memorial Fund Bursary. The $1,000 bursary was presented to Terry on June 10 at Highland Secondary School ceremonies on behalf of the Comox Valley Minor Hockey Association. Terry, who is currently enrolled at North Island College, devoted the past 14 years to recreational hockey, officiating at countless hockey games for the last few years in addition to maintaining his academic goals.
Amy Yakimyshyn, past-president of the Comox Valley Canadian Federation of University Women, presents Kim Robertson (Mark Isfeld grad) with a $1,000 bursary at this year’s CFUW Bursary Luncheon. Charlotte Grant (Highland grad) also received a bursary.
On June 12, seven RBC staff came out to lend a hand to Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS) and presented cheques totaling $6,000 to both MARS and the Comox Valley Conservation Strategy (CVCS) Community Partnership. The CVCS received $5,000 from the RBC Blue Water Project (pictured). The funds will be used to support education activities for improved protection and restoration measures for streams and stream side habitat (riparian areas) and continued work towards protection of the Comox Lake Watershed. MARS received $1,000 to help in their ongoing efforts to rehabilitate wildlife and release them back into the wild. PHOTO SUBMITTED

Wrestling at CRI on Friday United tryouts on tap All Star Wrestling slams its way into Cumberland at the CRI (Cumberland Recreation Institute) on Friday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. as part of the Cumberland Motorcycle Roundup. Proceeds will go to raise money for Pediatric Cancer Research. King of the Island Battle Royale The competitors on the card show how tough they truly are when they enter the main event, an Overthe-Top-Rope Battle Royale to determine the King of the Island. Some of the competitors have history winning battle royales here in the Comox Valley. Back in 2005, “Gorgeous” Michelle Starr won the Vancouver Island Championship Battle Royale in Courtenay while Barry Goode has won the first and second Slams for Sebastian Battle Royales in Comox. That winning experience may not matter, though, against the formidable size and power of guys like Cremator Von Slasher, Eddie Osbourne, Lak Sidarttha, BJ Laredo and Bruiser Joe, the sneaky smarts of Disco Fury and Great Kasaki. Grudge Match Cremator Von Slasher vs. “Gorgeous” Michelle Starr This much-anticipated match may be the biggest match contested in the Comox Valley in many years. The seven-foot, monstrously popular Cremator will battle a man he’s wanted to get his hands on for over a decade, the Canadian Hall of Famer Michelle Starr. Last year, the Gorgeous One decided that 2014 was the year he would wrestle anyone worthy that he hadn’t wrestled yet in his career and in a poll posted on allstar-wrestling.com, the opponent the fans most wanted him to face was Cremator Von Slasher. The two warriors finally battled in a match for the ages earlier this year and it lived up to its lofty expectations. The Aug. 8 rematch is shaping up to be a bout of epic proportions. Tag Team Action “Thrillbillies” Eddie Osbourne & Barry Goode vs. Disco Fury & The Great Kasaki At Slams for Sebastian 2 earlier this
canadian wrestling legend “Gorgeous” Michelle Starr headlines this Friday’s All Star Wrestling card in Cumberland. year, the Thrillbillies made their debut as a team and defeated a formidable team which included a former Canadian heavyweight champion. They also battled their way into the hearts of the local wrestling fans as the hometown heroes. Hailing from Courtenay and Campbell River, respectively, Barry Goode and Eddie Osbourne meshed quickly and realized right away that the Thrillbillies had a chemistry that can’t be taught. However, there is a team that is coming to Cumberland Aug. 8 that thinks they can beat Barry and Eddie.
Disco Fury has wrestled all over the world and has won international championships along the way. The dastardly disco dancer is bringing some international talent to Cumberland with him – Japanese wrestler The Great Kasaki. Kasaki is strong, but he also has a unique weapon in his arsenal – he sprays mist into the eyes of his opponent, usually without the referee seeing and more often than not, it leads to a victory. Ladies Match Riea Von Slasher vs. Bambi Hall These ladies have battled each other countless times and it’s a matchup that
never lacks excitement, intensity and hard-hitting action. These two wrestlers don’t twirl their hair and strike poses – they kick the crap out of each other. Both are superbly talented, amazingly tough and they bring it like no other. This wrestling card is stacked with talent and great matches but don’t be surprised if Von Slasher vs. Hall is the match of the night. Other scheduled matches on the Friday night fundraiser include Krofton vs. Bruiser Joe and BJ Laredo vs. Lak Sidarrtha. Goat FM’s Rock Dawg Andrew Davis is the special MC for the show and Tim Chaisson will be the referee. Tickets ($15 ringside and $12 general admission) are available at Cameron Salon & Barber, Cumberland Hotel, Weaver’s Leather, Fineline Embroidery and I-Hos Gallery. Comox Valley United is gearing up for their 2014-15 Vancouver Island Soccer League Div. 1 season. Tryouts are scheduled to get underway Aug. 7; the season starts in early September. For August, tryouts will be held Tuesdays at G.P
Vanier and Thursday at Woodcote Park, both starting at 7 p.m. For more information, email Carey at soccercoach12@shaw.ca or call him at 250-871-0620. – Comox Valley United
