Smoke from regional fires continues to drift across the Grand Forks valley. A wildfire reported near Blue Joint Mountain is 100 per cent contained, said Fanny Bernard, fire information officer for the Southeast Fire Centre. The most prevalent cause of smoke this week is likely from a fire near Slocan Park, approximately two kilometres north of Hwy 6. Four helicopters and 30 firefighters are currently battling the blaze that is about 100 hectares and remains uncontained. Forty-seven homes in Slocan Park and Crescent Valley were evacuated. Also in the region is the White Tail Brook fire about 10 kilometres east of Canal Flats. That fire is about 1,550 hectares and double the resources than the Slocan Park fire are on site. It is 40 per cent contained. There are also a large number of wildfires in Washington State, primarily occurring in Chelan and Okanogan counties in the north-central section of the state. The Carlton Complex fire (now 67 percent contained) in Okanogan County is officially the largest recorded wildfire in Washington at more than 250,000 acres. B.C.’s Southeast Fire Centre issued a report saying there were eight new fires in the region this week, all of them lightning-caused. Total fires to date this fiscal year (beginning April 1) are 217, with 3,126 hectares burned. Provincially there have been 969 fires, which burned a total of 208,663 hectares. The Boundary’s danger class rating is extreme. A campfire ban has begun in Grand Forks and the surrounding area. The ban, which went into effect on Tuesday, Aug. 5 and covers the entire Southeast Fire Centre, was implemented to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. “With the current trend of warm and dry weather we’ve had, wildfires have displayed a very aggressive behaviour and required additional fire suppression resources,” Bernard said. “The warm and dry weather and the amount of lightning we’ve had hasn’t been accompanied by rain. Because of that, any resources we have have to be able to respond to these naturally occurring wildfires.” The campfire ban will remain in place until the public is notified it has been rescinded.

Some fairly good bags were reported. J.A. ATV club gets funds to install staging areas GRAND FORKS ATV CLUB to the Grand Forks Gazette
The Grand Forks ATV Club has been successful in their application for Job Creation Program funding. With their many partners, the club will clear, map, erect signage and install staging areas in the Stewart, Morrissey and Gilpin areas. The partners share the same values as the club’s mission statement: “The Grand Forks ATV Club is active in preserving the environment and wildlife habitat, protecting our rights and privileges to access crown land, promoting safe and responsible operation of ATVs, and planning events, rides and meetings for every ATV enthusiast to attend. The club is dedicated to promoting safe riding on marked trails for all riders, youth and seniors alike. “The majority of our members are seniors and near-senior and want to get out and see the beautiful areas in British Columbia on recognized trails in a safe manner.” The area sees an abundance of use and is recognized as having many sensitive environmental and wildlife concerns. Many of the partners have come together to identify these areas of concern and the species at risk. There will be educational kiosks installed at the three staging areas to help bring this information to the shared users of the area. Everyone feels that with education and facts about the area, users will have a greater respect for the environment and wildlife. They will stay on the marked trails and enjoy the great vistas plus the various trails leading from existing forest service roads. The Job Creation Program allows the club to hire four workers who benefit from the experience of mapping, trail building, water erosion control, range land practices and talking with a area biologist. They will also have a chance to talk with the area’s Nature Trust and Grasslands managers to gain a better understanding of the issues surrounding the area’s diverse ecosystem. Club member Doug Zorn said, “This is not something new for this area—the club is hoping with well-marked trails and education people who use the area will now have a better understanding of the issues and want to do the right thing by staying on the trails.”

A grass fire could have easily grown to catastrophic proportions given the tinder dry conditions, but thanks to the fast response of Grand Forks Fire/Rescue, it was kept to half an acre in size. The department was called out to a fire on Jasper Ave. Thursday at about 3 p.m., said Fire Chief Dale Heriot. Three fire engines and 15 firefighters attended the scene. Flames consumed about a half acre of grass and thicket. “The fire was caused by a resident burning waste materials in a burn barrel,” Heriot confirmed. “The barrel was left unattended and the fire

was the result. A neighbour notified the resident of the fire. It took the fire department about an hour to fully extinguish the fire.” The grass and forest fuels are currently extremely dry and the Boundary has been at a high to extreme fire rating for a week or more, the chief warned. “As a reminder, there is an open burning ban in effect for the area. This includes burn piles, burn barrels, grass burning, fireworks, or any burning other than campfires. “Also a reminder that there is no open burning of any kind, including campfires within the city limits 12 months a year. If you are working in your yard or enjoying the back country please be extremely careful at all times,” the chief added.

Some things are priceless and to 13-year-old Nicole, it’s a precious bear knitted by a relative. That bear is now lost and Nicole is devastated. Kelowna residents Nicole and her younger sister Anastasia were travelling through Grand Forks with family friend Melanie Hall-Szyszkiewicz. The girls were practicing dances and cartwheels by the fountain on Market Ave. in the summer sun and Nicole’s backpack was left behind—so was the bear, nestled inside. “When we realized it, we drove back, all three of us chanting, ‘We wish we find Nicole’s backpack,’ saying it over and over. But the backpack was gone,” Hall-Szyszkiewicz said. The most amazing thing happened hours later, she said. “It was five hours later in another part of

Don’t add to danger
As we get further into August it looks like the hot and dry weather will be here for a while. With the recent grass fire on Jasper Ave., residents are once again reminded how fragile our balance with nature really is. It doesn’t take much to turn a small backyard fire into a full-blown blaze. If not for the quick and efficient work of the local Grand Forks Fire/Rescue, the grass fire could have been much, much worse. At the Southeast Fire Centre, which covers Grand Forks and region, fire information officers are urging great care and have, in fact, enacted a campfire ban. There have been several lightningcaused fires in the region recently, including a 100 hectare blaze in Slocan Park. Any man-made fires pull resources away from those natural fires. Fortunately, there has only been one small fire in the Boundary in the past week up at Blue Joint Mountain and that was dealt with quickly. However, with tinderdry conditions that is likely to change. There are, after all, eight lightningcaused fires which started up this week and 217 in the year to date burning 3,126 hectares. One thing about fires is that they are very unpredictable. Winds and tree lines can affect how quick a fire spreads and in which direction it goes. The extremely dry conditions mean the fire risk is very high. New fires will start easily, spread rapidly and challenge fire suppression efforts. Residents need to ensure they are not hindering fire crews by adding to fire danger.

The time for meaningful government-supported day care in B.C. has arrived. Actually, it arrived a number of years ago, but its arrival should finally be apparent today to all but the most conservative ideologue. With wages failing to keep up with the rise in the cost of living, employers trying to keep up with competition from overseas and governments trying to keep up with their promises not to raise taxes, working-class people are finding it increasingly difficult
to raise a family. In many cases, two incomes are a necessity; that means that childcare is also often a necessity. A report last week in the Vancouver Sun stated that daycare rates in the Lower Mainland were as high as $1,400 per child per month. Out here in the hinterlands, of course, the cost of daycare is far less, if working parents can find a facility that they can trust and that has any room for their child. Yet wages are also less and the need for two wage earners frequently just as strong. There seems to be an ongoing myth that families should and could survive adequately on the salary of one person. It is perhaps generated by the relatively few and yet still in-
fluential members of the upper crust (upper class, jet setters, one-percenters, etc.) who believe that it is merely a lack of gumption and will that prevents the middle and lower classes from rising to the same position of affluence that they enjoy, a position that enables one hand-crafted, artisanbaked-bread earner to satisfy the financial needs of the entire family. When one looks at the list of countries that have the highest standard of living and the greatest productivity per capita, one notices that they all have subsidised daycare. The July 25 Vancouver Sun editorial cites studies by three universities that show that Quebec’s $7 a day childcare subsidy brought 70,000 wom-

en into the work force, boosted the gross domestic product by $5 billion a year and therefore raised far more in taxes than the cost of the subsidy. In a province like B.C. which complains of worker shortages and has to hire offshore labour to meet demand, bringing more women into the work force would seem to be a huge plus. The only people who refuse to acknowledge the advantages are either those who, caught in a time warp, say that they were raised by a stay-at-home parent and their family did all right, or those who insist that childcare subsidies are merely another example of creeping socialism, a blight on free enterprise that must not be allowed to spread.

to the editor
Soccer club needs support Editor, The Gazette: Boundary Youth Soccer regrets to announce that our president, Tim Carson, has stepped down effective immediately. Tim stepped up from his role as vice-president to take over when Jeff Olson stepped down. He’s one of the original BYSA board members and has poured an immense amount of energy into youth soccer in our region over the years. We are grateful for your efforts Tim, and we wish you the best. You will be missed. Chantel Lovegrove has agreed to take on the role of interim president at least until our AGM in the fall. Chantel has done an amazing job at coordinating our Kicks for Kids program (four and under) over the past year and has generously agreed to step up to the plate as president. This raises the main point of this letter. We need your help! We are proud to provide soccer to over 300 kids in the Boundary year in and year out, but it is becoming increasingly challenging to do so as it requires an immense amount of work. We anticipate that there will be more turnover on the board leading up to the AGM. At a minimum, we are confident there will be vacancies on the board for the roles of treasurer and vice-president and general directors. We’ve also been short of non-board volunteer positions such as equipment coordinator, volunteer coordinator, and head coach. Beyond that we are in need of general volunteers for duties such as running the equipment table, barbeque,
general tournament help, etc. Given all this, we are uncertain whether we can offer fall soccer this year. We had planned to offer a five-week session on a once a week drop-in basis with no practices and no tournament. This would be offered free of charge to spring players and at a nominal fee to cover insurance for new players. It would be a fun session to keep those keener players going, and the drop-in format would be much easier to coordinate in terms of the lower registration of players and coaches we get in the fall. But we need the help of the membership to make it happen. We’ve identified that we need at least 12 coaches throughout all age groups to be able to go ahead with a fall session. We also need people to sign up to volunteer for either the board, as coaches or general volunteers. Please visit our volunteer registration page online at www.boundaryyouthsoccer.com. If you want to volunteer for something other than coach or board, please select “other” and use the text box to detail how you’re willing to help. You may also leave a phone message at 250-443-5045. We have an amazing association and we want to continue to provide a great experience to all our kids. Please join us to help make that happen. Thanks for your support. Housing society is listening
Editor, The Gazette: I would like to set some facts straight regarding the senior’s housing project in Christina Lake. The Christina Lake Senior’s Housing Society was listening long and hard to feedback presented at both the April rezoning hearing and the public meeting held later about converting the west corner of the community nature park into senior’s housing. Concerns ranged from encroachment on wildlife habitat, to the character of the development. As a result, the group has been meeting to completely redo their plans for affordable senior’s housing. They will be looking at the following: • Location and property available • Cost of purchasing other property • Design, life lease, rental • What a community needs to keep their

seniors • A whole community survey on future plans for seniors • A listing of property available in its natural state • A facility that will be used by the whole community Communities who have planned for their senior population and who wish to keep their seniors know that they need to be housed where amenities are easily accessed, not hidden away on remote properties. Seniors need to keep active, have easy access to meals, exercise and social interaction. The senior’s planning committee will look at all of these issues and hold community meetings for dialogue and feedback. Look for further updates in the fall. Be wary, take time to become informed
On Saturday, Nov. 15, eligible voters throughout the Kootenay-Boundary region will go to the polls to cast their votes for positions on village, town and city councils, school boards and regional district boards. It’s a ritual that has been performed every three years for many years, but this time the term of office is four years. No matter where you live in the region, choosing people for positions on governing bodies can be a challenging and often highly Rousing frustrating exercise for voters. How does one the Rabble choose the best people to serve them from among both well-known and virtually unROY RONAGHAN known candidates? Is it best to pick a candidate who is running on his/her record or a fresh face that makes interesting promises. Gathering information about the decision-making capabilities of candidates can be difficult. An election is not a popularity contest and those who are selected to govern on behalf of everyone should be chosen wisely. During the next few months the names of candidates will become known. Some have already declared their intentions and voters can now begin looking at them with a critical eye. Will they serve the municipal, the school district, or the regional district well in a decision-making role? What is their stance on issues like taxation and budgeting? Will they be open and transparent? Are they well informed about the critical issues in their respective jurisdictions? Above all, will they keep in touch with their constituents, i.e., be open and transparent? Municipalities, regional districts and school districts are operated on behalf of all taxpayers by their respective staffs that receive their guidance from elected officials. Ensuring that those employees have the best possible guidance is the responsibility of the voters. New candidates will offer their names for a variety of reasons and determining how each of them might behave in a decision-making capacity is in the realm of pure speculation. A vote for any candidate—neophyte or experienced—should be an informed one but even after reading published platforms and statements in the media, and attending all-candidates’ meetings, useful information is often scarce. Consequently it is wise to be wary. Be wary of promises that you know can’t be kept. They are made to win votes and once elected, a candidate must work with several others in a decisionmaking capacity. Be wary of a candidate who talks about sustainable growth and development. Growth is not sustainable. Be wary of a candidate who claims to want to reduce taxes without providing considerable detail on the services that would be cut to accomplish a significant reduction. Be wary of a candidate who claims to be a “team player.” Effective councils or boards are generally not ever of one mind and they make better decisions if they consider a diversity of views. Be wary of a candidate who has a plan to create a vibrant community during their term of office. Elected officials can do no more than pass bylaws and allocate funds in support of projects. Be wary of a candidate who talks about the potential of the area but does not provide details. Be wary of a candidate who is not familiar with the Municipal Act, the Community Charter and existing bylaws. The message to all voters is a clear one. • Become as well informed as possible about candidates who have the attributes to do their jobs well on behalf of all residents in the city or the region during the next four years. • Vote for the people who provide you with some assurances that they can make wise decisions. • Treat this election as much more than a crapshoot. to the editor
‘Lest we forget’ a political slogan Editor, The Gazette: Lest we forget! What rubbish. We forgot long ago. The end came when Canada went from being peacekeepers to world warriors, when sharing personal and private remembrances became political and commercial pantomimes. It was buried when our minister of external affairs, a man with zero diplomatic experience, was assigned the task of braying about the ne-
cessity of war to the world on our behalf. The final indignity was allowing men, members of the armed services, to kill themselves for whatever reason the Government of Canada uses to justify their ineptitude in withholding help. Lest we forget. Right! Just another slogan, and now a political one at that. Robert Chornenki, Grand Forks
Take a stand, find your voice Editor, The Gazette: An open letter of empathy to our community, I would like to raise some questions I feel we must all consider and ponder as the awe of this summer envelopes us. People born and living in the Gaza strip are at this time experiencing a different sort of awe. For over 20 days the 1.8 million residents of this roughly 148 square kilometre area have been relentlessly bombarded with every type of modern weapon available. Israel’s substantial, well-equipped and trained military has unleashed an attack on the people of Gaza that has rarely been seen in “developed” nations. Intentionally or not, the Israeli military has killed over 1,200 people and injured over 6,000. They have completely annihilated entire neighbourhoods, destroyed hospitals and schools, even UN-built schools), as well as totally laying waste to the vital infrastructure that remains from past Israeli incursions. According to the UN, the vast majority of these victims have been women and children, not combatants. I want to make it very clear that I support Israel’s right to exist, but I also support the Palestinians’ right to exist. This right is not more applicable to either side so please do not venture down the path of anti anything. I do not support destruction from either side. However, the death and destruction is fairly one-sided in scale. How is it that in the 21st Century this kind of abject barbarism exists, let alone is condoned? Do we support the killing of so many children? We cannot believe shelling hospitals, schools, essential infrastructure
gratulations Con
(power plants, water treatment facilities) and places of refuge is acceptable? We must—one and all—take a stand against abject destruction in all its forms. As the veterans from the world wars have stated many times, we must “never forget.” I fear we have forgotten. Any person can investigate. We can watch the videos from these war zones. No matter the sadness and revulsion that we may feel, remember it pales in comparison to the person holding their terrified children in their arms as the missiles come shrieking in. The innocents in the Gaza strip far outweigh the militants. The same stands true of the Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and we the people of the developed nations of the world had better find our. If we continue to believe that we are somehow separate from these catastrophic horrors all too soon we may experience just the opposite. For the sake of the whole world we must wake up. We must say no to wholesale destruction; no to young dreams deprived; no to shattered bodies, families and homes. If you feel that we have the right to live without terror and complete annihilation; that your kids deserve to grow happy and brimming with dreams then take a stand, find your voice. There is no justification for this assault on Gaza. Educate yourselves and make informed decisions. We are the ones that possess the power In solidarity with the people of Gaza and the innocents throughout the world, Ben Sorelensen, Grand Forks

What social skills does a three-year-old bring to interactions with a new peer partner? If he has strong bonds to his parents, the child is likely to be a positive, responsive playmate, and he’ll be able to adapt to a difficult peer by asserting his needs, according to a new University of Illinois study published in Developmental Psychology.

Get on your lawnmower and race! SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
The Grand Forks ATV Club is hosting the Lawnmower Races at this year’s fall fair Aug. 22-24. The races were held in 2009-10 and were a great source of entertainment for the whole family. The roar of the engines and the screams of the crowd will once again be in Grand Forks on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 2-8 p.m.
To make this a fun event, the club needs lawnmower racers! There are not many rules and there are different categories from stock to super modified (which come with snowmobile engines). This year’s first prize is $300 offered by the main sponsor, Kubota Canada. There are several other prizes and some trophies to be won. The club has approached many local businesses and hopes that community spirit will thrive in the event.
If you are a business that would like to build a racer and have not been approached please contact GFATV Club 250-442-3359. If you are a business and want to have your logo on a machine by contributing some funds to the building of a racer, please contact the same number. If you have an old mower that works or not, we can find it a home with a sponsor. Please call 250-442-3359 to have it picked up.
Cabin air filters keep dust and pollen out of your H-VAC system and needs to be checked every 5,000km and replaced as needed. DESIGNATED INSPECTION FACILITY

Firefighters of all ages enjoy Ladder-a-thon The Grand Forks Volunteer Firefighters’ Association hosted its 14th annual Ladder-a-thon fundraiser this weekend. During the event, members of Grand Forks Fire/Rescue rotate in one-hour shifts to have somebody up the ladder for 24 hours. Pictured left is Howard Aldridge as he takes his turn in the sky. The event also featured the restored 1929 Chevrolet (Grand Forks’ first motorized unit, purchased new in 1929 and has been here ever since), a sure hit with the younger generation. Pictured bottom left are Buck McIver, 2, of Grand Forks (sitting), sharing the ride with Toronto visitor Michael Ciceran, 11 months. For the last 14 years, the firefighters have raised money for a variety of causes; this year they learned a former member of the Grand Forks Fire Department had been diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). All proceeds from this year’s Ladder-a-thon will be used locally to assist the former member, who served with Grand Forks Fire/Rescue for over a decade. Thanks to the generous support of the Grand Forks residents and tourists who stopped by the Laddera-thon, the volunteer firefighters raised nearly $3,000. Della Mallette photos

Piranhas make waves at regionals CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
Ten Piranha swim club members are heading for provincials after strong showings at the regional swim meet in Trail this past weekend. The whole team, which included 26 swimmers at the meet, performed well in Trail as the Piranhas finished third out of seven teams and even finished ahead of the host Trail Stingrays club. The team also took home two major awards: The Jeli Orrell Memorial Spirit of Kootenay Swimming Trophy, which is awarded to a Kootenay swimmer that has entered the coaching field and shows a positive encouraging method of coaching young children at swim meets, was awarded to Piranha coaches Robyn and Doug Van Ek; and the Dick Buckingham Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the most sportsmanlike team in the region. “For many the regional meet in Trail was the last meet of the season,” said Doug. “The swimmers who attended this meet swam with great determination achieving many best times and finishing atop the podium.” Swimmers qualifying for the BCSSA (B.C.
Summer Swim Association) Provincial Championships on August 15-17 in Kamloops are: Ethan Argue, Nicole Nuyten, Kiyomi Dunnet, Kohei Dunnet, Robbie Wark, Trentin Ludwar, Sam Podmoroff, Dayton Bryan, Raelyn Morgan and Aysia Morgan. “I’m so incredibly proud of this team,” said Robyn. “We had excellent results in the pool last weekend but I am most proud of the way the kids interact with fellow swimmers. They are very supportive of their teammates and their competitors from other teams. I am very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to coach the Piranhas.”

Salmon Chiropratic Salmon Chiropractic opened in Grand Forks February 2013. Dr. Margaret Salmon, owner, has been in practice for over 40 years. Myself, Maureen Prystae, , have joined the team in August 2013 and then began my career in this field with starting as office assistant leading to my training and certification as a laser therapist. Today I work alongside Dr. Salmon providing Bioflex and Multiradiance laser treatments. Together we are seeing the results in our patients and encourage others to experience the benefits of laser therapy as it enhances the body’s natural healing processes. This technology is highly effective in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, arthritis, sports injuries, carpal tunnel, and tarsal tunnel syndromes. Come in today and make an appointment to experience the positive effects on your body!!

Christ Lutheran very welcoming lowship, where you have coffee with people. I like the neat mugs. I get to volunteer at the church. You get to empty out the coffee filters and check on the two washrooms. They have snacks after church too. Church starts at 8:52 a.m. There is a cross outside the church. Every Christian knows what that cross means. The people are just nice and welcoming. They sing nice Christian songs. I like the piano music. They have two
pianos. The service isn’t too long, you read out of the bulletin and the song books. People just like to listen to someone read the different scriptures. You sit on neat wooden benches. It is comfortable. The person who hands out the bulletin lights the candles at the front then someone starts to play the piano to get everyone’s attention. The pastor says welcome to everyone. I really enjoy the short services.

Dorothy (Dot) Louise
Campbell
It is with great sadness we wish to announce the passing of Dorothy (Dot) Louise Campbell of Abbotsford, B.C. She passed away at The Trillium Bevan Lodge on July 21 2014 at the age of 99. She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Roy (Loretta) Campbell of Aldergrove, B.C. and Jack (Anna) Campbell of Victoria B.C.; her grandchildren, Scott (Stephanie) Campbell of Edmonton, AB, Kevin Campbell and Tracy (Mike) Opp of Abbotsford, B.C. and Darren Campbell of Winnipeg Manitoba; and her great-grandchildren Abigail, Benjamin and Timothy Opp. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings. She was born and raised in Calgary, AB, on Oct. 18, 1914. She married Jack (Bud) Campbell and lived for a few years in Trail, B.C. until moving to Grand Forks in 1950, She was a dedicated wife and mother while her husband “Bud“ spent long hours running the Sunshine Valley Dairy. Due to failing health and a desire to be closer to the rest of the family, Dot and Bud made the difficult decision to move to a retirement home in Abbotsford in the summer of 2004. We wish to thank all the staff and medical personnel at Bevan Lodge for taking such good care of her, especially during her last few days.
