RDCK: Who’s running for re-election?
1-866 604-2224
Five of the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s 11 rural regional directors plan to seek re-election this fall, while two will retire and three others are undecided. John Kettle, who has represented rural Creston since 2002 and chaired the board since 2010, is among those still thinking about it. “I reserve the right to make my choice known on October 10,” he said. Kettle explained a number of things would factor into his decision, including his age (he’s 67), his family, the recent resignation of the regional district’s administrator and naming of a successor, as well as the turmoil of emergencies the last few years including the Johnsons Landing slide and Lemon Creek fuel spill. Also unsure are rural Castlegar director Andy Davidoff, who said he is “seriously considering” seeking a second term, and rural Nelson director Ramona Faust, who said she is evaluating her options. Faust said she would like to see a number of projects to completion, including repairs to the Nelson aquatic centre, development of a management plan for the Balfour Beach, transit improvements, and a plan for local health facilities. “After three years of confining my activities to the regional district I am also interested in part time employment in my field but I very much enjoy serving the community,” she said. When first elected in 2008, Faust was among the
few directors to hold down an additional job. Two directors are not expected to run again. Rural Kaslo’s Andy Shadrack retires after nine years in office “and 51 in politics.” His alternate, Aimee Watson, will seek to replace him. Two-term rural Nelson director Ron Mickel said he won’t stand for re-election — although he planned to bow out three years ago only to change his mind at the last minute. “I suppose that could happen again but I don’t think so,” he said. Those who hope to be back include longtime Arrow Lakes director Paul Peterson and rural Salmo director Hans Cunningham, who has served continuously since 1986. If returned to office, Cunningham would break John Voykin’s record as the longest serving RDCK director three years into his next term. Slocan Valley director Walter Popoff said he will try for a third term, citing a long list of projects he hopes to complete, including the Crescent Valley Beach Park, a parks and recreation master plan, and Slocan Lake management plan. Popoff also said he wanted to work toward upgrading local health care facilities and having Health Canada consult communities before licensing medical marijuana facilities. Similarly, rural Creston director Larry Binks said he is running for re-election because of a number of initiatives he’d like to see come to fruition, including the West Creston fire service and a fresh water fish and shrimp farm in West Creston. He also
wants to help improve the sustainability of the Creston Valley wildlife management area’s interpretive centre. “From a personnel point I am very excited where the RDCK is headed,” he added. East Shore director Garry Jackman also intends to seek another term. “I am enjoying the job,” he said. “It is still the most interesting job I’ve ever had.” Jackman works as a contractor and does some consulting outside his political role, but has always been involved in community work. Rural Castlegar director Gord Zaitsoff couldn’t be reached. The regional district’s board also has nine municipal directors appointed by their respective councils.

A valuable program designed to help meet the nutritional needs of folks on tight budgets is in a bit of a holding pattern until certain other folks may step in to help. Here’s the deal: It was just about 52 weeks ago an article appeared in these pages outlining a program intended to put wholesome locallyproduced food on deserving tables. The program was province-wide, but Deb McIntosh, director of the Saturday morning event known then as the Heritage Society Vendor Market had already begun a local variant – where vouchers from the food bank were redeemable at the market each week. The government program went ahead as well with a lengthy list of markets taking part. The following italicized text is an excerpt from last year’s August 1 story outlining the 2013 scenario. “Starting in August, vouchers will be available with the food hampers provided through the food bank,” McIntosh said. “They will be good for the following Saturday’s market [at
the museum].” The vouchers — $5 (for singles), $10 (for couples) and $15 (for families) — will be funded through the Community Harvest Food Bank for now and about 200 people will be eligible to participate. The vouchers will be valid at the Castlegar Farmers’ Market on the day stated on the voucher. The program could continue this year, but for one key detail. McIntosh (who steers the Community Harvest Food Bank) explained on July 29. “This year we haven’t had enough farmers with produce show up at the market,” she related. “So we haven’t been doing it. If August is better for fruits and vegetables coming in then we’ll issue the vouchers again. But for right now, at least, there’s just no point.” The weekly market last year benefitted from the consistent participation of a high energy, high producer. “We had Erran Rilkoff here last year,” said McIntosh, “but he’s out at the Doukhobor Village now… The Apple Guy.” There’s a sizable void now that the food bank director and market coordina-

tor continues to seek a way to fill. “We’ll restart the program when we can, but right now it’s just not working,” she concluded. “So we’ll buy a box of peaches and bring it into the food bank, instead.” Maybe this story can serve an added
purpose… by getting the word out that those in the area who may have grown a surplus of fruits and vegetables are welcome to join in at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings outside the Station Museum. For more information call Deb McIntosh at 250-365-6440.

Legion members get on their rides to raise money for vets LIZ BEVAN
West Kootenay Advertiser
Veterans and fellow motorcycle enthusiasts will be putting on their leathers and helmets and hitting the road for a good cause. On Aug. 10, the motorcycleriding members and friends of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #11 will get on their bikes and go for a ride to raise dollars for two programs geared towards helping veterans. Glenda Reilly, office administrator for the Legion, says the programs supported by The Annual Ride to Support Veterans to help veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) learn coping skills and to help them make the change from the military to civilian life. “It’s coming out that a lot of soldiers are showing signs (of PTSD) and up until this point there hasn’t been a lot of help in trying to get them over this and transition from war to peace,” she said. “The returning soldiers go through a three-day intensive program (to treat their PTSD).” Greg Hill, president of the Trail Legion, says the problem of PTSD is very real and veterans need the help. “Some of them are pretty far gone and as you have seen in the news, some of them have committed suicide,” he said. “This is what we are trying to
help out in and we are trying to reach out the them.” The second program the Legion helps fund is put on in partnership with British Columbia Institute of Technology and is designed to ease a soldier’s move into the workforce. “A lot of soldiers were trained for the army and a lot of their training can’t be transferred,” said Reilly. “This program helps them do that by getting them accredited in civilian life along with the proper documentation and things like that.” Hill says he has already seen results from the veterans enrolled in the program. “I have met a few veterans who have gone through the course and they were very impressed with it,” he said. “A couple of them have been returned to civilian life and they are out working.” This is the third annual ride in the Legion’s West Kootenay Zone and Reilly says every year, the event has gotten bigger and bigger. “The first one, we had around 40 bikes and then at the next one, they were already up to 100 bikes,” she said, adding that the Legion hopes it can grow even bigger. “We’re hoping that as time goes by and the word gets out and more people are aware of the programs, it will grow to be a huge annual event.” The Royal Canadian Legion has encouraged riders from

branches across Canada to do something similar in their own areas. The ride got started based on an idea from two members and motorcycle riders who wanted to combine their history and their love of hitting the road. “They brainstormed and the concept was, ‘We enjoy riding, why not help a few veterans along the way?’” said Reilly. “It is a way to have fun and raise money for veterans at the same time.” The Sunday morning event begins at 8 a.m. with a bacon and egg breakfast, running until 1 p.m., while the motorcycles hit the road at 10 a.m. Anyone with a motorcycle can join the ride for a $20 registration fee, and everyone is welcome for breakfast. To participate in the ride, organizers ask that bikes are registered at 9 a.m. at the branch at 2141 Columbia Ave. in Trail.

Fruitvale fruitful for realtors, less so for farmers
Everything must go!
Sixty-sixth in an semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
Despite its name, Fruitvale was never much of a fruit-growing settlement. First known as Beaver Siding, it was one of eight original stations on the Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway identified in the Nelson Tribune of December 14, 1893. The siding was named for Beaver Creek, which was so labelled on George M. Dawson’s 1890 Reconnaissance Map of a Portion of the West Kootanie [sic] District. The earliest mention of Fruitvale was in the Nelson Daily News of June 25, 1907 — the name simply appeared in a box without explanation. A week later, surveyor A.H. Green completed a plan entitled “Subdivision of part of Fruitvale, being part of the property of Frederick L. Hammond, situated west of the Nelson and Fort
Sheppard Railway.” By September, townsite ads began to appear, placed by Hammond’s Kootenay Orchard Association. The Fruitvale post office opened in December, although it’s unclear when the railway adopted the new name. While much land was sold, little of it actually produced fruit. The name was chosen “more to advertise a potential than to express a reality,” Jack Greenwood wrote in Making History: An Anthology of British Columbia. As retired Trail Times reporter Raymond Masleck put it, “Fruitvale is a lovely sounding name, but its origins are a bit of a laugher. The flim flam men flogging lots at the turn of the last century pitched it as fruit-growers paradise, much to the chagrin of the settlers who arrived to discover the exposure and climate ruled it out as a candidate

for the new Garden of Eden.” Nevertheless, Fruitvale prospered and was incorporated as a village in 1952. FRAINE This little-known railway stop was about 700 meters southwest of South Slocan. According to the late Dave Macdonald, a longtime West Kootenay Power employee,
the company used the spur for unloading sand and gravel during construction of its No. 3 plant between 1926 and 1929. The same siding was apparently used 20 years earlier when the CPR built Creel Lodge, but it wasn’t yet named Fraine. John Denton Fraine (1881-1951) spent most of his 42-year Ca-
nadian Pacific Railway career in Alberta and northwestern Ontario, but in 1916 was named assistant superintendent in Nelson, where he spent a year. He was also superintendent in Revelstoke from 192629. He later lent his name to another railway siding outside the north boundary of Glacier National Park.

for the
Week August 08, 2014
Tip of the Week: As summer rages on it is especially hot in Gaza, Palestine. Israel’s aggression directed to its neighbor has captured the world’s attention, again. While the media seems bent in Israel’s favour the opinion on the streets and certainly on the internet, are not so polarized. When innocents die due to politically sanctioned military insurgence people begin to lose interest in rationalized justifications. The question is: does this scenario show up in the Astrology of Israel? The answer is yes, naturally. Modern day Israel was ‘born’ on May 14 1948 at 4:37 pm in Tel Aviv. Briefly, Israel’s chart shows 4 planets in Leo: Moon, Pluto, Saturn and Mars, in that order and they together occupy the zenith or crown of the chart. This reveals a proud and authoritarian approach and potentially one that is dictatorial. This is especially likely due to this particular line-up of planets. The Ascendant is 0 degrees Scorpio which indicates a passionate, and dramatic, even intense mode of self-expression inclined to control in order to change or transform others. The Sun is in Taurus and is square both Mars and Saturn occupying the mid-point of that hard aspect. A textbook interpretation of Mars square (90 degree angle) the Sun suggests having difficulty discerning the difference between assertion and aggression. Sun square to Saturn suggests obstacles and hardships that tend to thwart fulfillment and produce a pessimistic disposition and a Spartan attitude. Regarding current transits, or the position of the planets now and how they affect any given chart, reveals Jupiter in Leo as of July 16 which means it is conjunct (same position) all the planets in Leo at the crown point of Israel’s chart where it will remain for another year. Jupiter has an 11.86 year cycle so it has been that long since its last transit through Leo. Combined with Mars in Scorpio since July 25th conjunct Israel’s ascendant, the arrow’s point of self-expression, illustrates a clear indication of synchronicity at play.

A playful and passionate mood prevails. How you play will determine the intensity. That your ambitions are running high means you could get very involved. If you get too attached you will push others away. Balance is ever ideal and requires now that you are more aware and to care about how others feel. Focus to weave harmony into the game. Your confidences should be rising steadily now. However, you may also be contending with some real power players. This could prove to be a test of your mettle and your resolve. Your moods and feelings may be up and down and all over the place. This cycle will change this week, but not before the Moon is full. Focus on arts and crafts to regain your calm and center. A dynamic creative curve continues to drive your world. This could produce a lot of ideas and social interactions too. You may still wish you could feel more secure. You may have to work harder than usual to achieve the peace you seek. As well, you may feel drawn to mentors who can assist. Aim for variety, but not too much or too little. Ambitions to create a deeper sense of security are now in focus. To this end you feel passionate and determined, yet perhaps at least a bit impatient. The time period you are in may best be regarded as a foundation building process. Your goals and desire for returns and rewards point to the longer term, not the short. Trust this flow and the steady pace. You have entered an expansive time. Yet, there also remains a contractive element underway. In fact it points to a rather deep renovation process. This may well include your actual living environment, but it contains spiritual undertones as well. Clearing limiting beliefs, attitudes and/or self-concepts are examples. Affirm your willingness to make internal change. Time well spent now will find you in your studio, creative cave, or some other contemplative and cultivating state of mind and approach. Allow yourself to retreat. Yet you can still be productive, perhaps even more than usual. Fortunately, your energy levels are probably running high. Use this cycle to creatively visualize your dreams and craft your ambitions.

A new day is dawning. It will activate new associations, friendships and maybe more intimate love interests as well. For now it requires that you keep an open mind. As well, be receptive too and even focused upon attaining new tools, knowledge and skills. Even though you may still be paying dues returns for past efforts are featured, helping you to even the score. The time has come to get some extra attention, the kind you want, deserve and especially have earned. It takes courage to ask, for risk of rejection, but you are probably feeling quite assertive. Make Mars in your sign work for you. It will help to be clear so at least review your objectives and visualize the outcomes(s) you desire to activate your manifestation magic. An expansive and creative cycle has begun. It is inspiring you to participate in the game. Whatever stage or arena calls, you are sure to be a big hit. Even a more intimate connection or gathering will suffice. Yet, you may have to clear the way somehow first. This could include getting out of your own way. Although you seldom show it obviously, you have a lot of passion churning within. These should be at a rolling boil now. This will remain true for the next few weeks at least, and will even linger longer into September and beyond. How to make the most of this zeal is the question. Part of the answer includes others. It’s time to talent scout. Some rolls are better than others and you are probably on a good one now. This has the kind of momentum that allows you to ascend hills and even mountains with relative ease. Yet it is important that you build your momentum now. Be willing to diversify too. You are probably not the type to scatter your energies. This is a big time. Your passions, desires and ambitions are percolating. Success with your goals does imply that you have to get to work, yet playfully. As well, it may prove more inspiring and productive to tackle a few projects at once. Some need to focus more intently, but for you one projects feeds off the other and allows for creative synthesis.

An Escalade worth the wait Cadillac recently held the introduction of its all-new Escalade in the heart of Toronto, specifically the heart of Yorkville. This upscale slice of Toronto real estate is home to spendy shops, exclusive restaurants and luxurious hotels. This is a place to be seen or be seen in a vehicle that projects the image one wants to portray. Media guests for the Escalade launch stayed at Toronto’s very first boutique hotel, The Hazelton. Korean wagon is a funky Soul By Bob McHugh
The Kia Soul is a trendy styling concept that somehow makes a roomy and practical boxy shape look funky. The cleverly designed compact 4-door hatchback wagon is easy on fuel, keenly priced and packed with features. Soul blew away its main (mini-box) competitors (from Honda, Nissan and Scion), when introduced for the 2010 model year. Used buyers will also be
pleased to learn that, so far, the Soul has proved to very reliable and there’s a reasonably good supply of them available on the market. You do have to be sold on its polarizing (love/hate) looks and appreciate the functional aspects of its design. On the inside, there is lots of room for taller passengers and 60/40 split-folding rear seats even allow you to stuff in a bike, or large golf bags. The base engine in a 2010 Kia Soul is a (122-hp) 1.6-li-
tre four-cylinder and it only came as a single trim edition with a five-speed manual transmission. Far more popular is the (142-hp) 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which came with a five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic transmission and in four trim levels 2u, 4u, 4u Retro, and 4u Burner. Even a basic Soul comes with heated power mirrors, heated seats, a tilt steering column, power windows and locks, wheel-mounted audio
controls, Bluetooth connectivity and rear washer/wiper. Moving up the trim levels can add 16-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, patterned seat inserts, keyless entry, dash-mounted tweeter speakers, door-mounted LED mood speakers and all sorts of unique extras to enhance the funky-car experience. Standard safety features include six airbags and antiwhiplash active front head restraints. Electronic stability
control and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes come with 2u or higher trim levels. Soul also got a “Top Safety Pick” classification rating, even though it was rated poor in its new “small overlap” crash test that simulates a front corner collision with a pole or another vehicle. The base 1.6L model got four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control for the 2011 model year, making these features standard on all models. The
2013 Kia Soul
outside door handles were also changed (from flip-up) to a grip type and a Luxury trim line was added. This new top-line trim added bodycolour bumpers, a rear-view
camera, automatic climate control, Smart Key with pushbutton start, leather upholstery and a centre console armrest.

Korean wagon is a funky Soul continued from page A9
Changes to Soul for the 2012 model year included interior and exterior styling enhancements, but were primarily mechanical. Even though displacement figures remained the same, the new engines are more powerful and a fuelsaving (hybrid-like) Idle Stop-and-Go feature was an option. New manual and automatic transmissions also came with six-
speed gear ratios. In addition to extra power a 2012 of newer Soul’s fuel consumption is lower. The 2.0 litre engine with an automatic transmission is rated at 7.9 L/100km city and 5.9 L/100km on the highway. While that’s a noteworthy improvement, a similar pre-2012 edition Kia Soul (rated at 8.5 city and 6.6 highway) is also a frugal fuel user. Soul was essentially a carry-over model for the 2013

model year, other than a revised grille (with new chrome accents) and a restyled “Kia” badge. This was also the last production year of the first generation Soul. An all-new Kia Soul was introduced for the 2014 model year. Though the Soul was designed to attract mainly attract younger buyers, the fuel efficiency and practical characteristics of a Kia Soul can appeal to any age of buyer - if they
like its looks. A forest firefighters’ truck of choice By Ian Harwood
Forest fire conditions in this province are at an all-time high and the wood is very dry. The men and women that fight these fires every year rely on their vehicles to take them to the battlefield. Remote back roads and sometimes the forest floor are the roads on which they must travel. There is a variety of vehicles in the firefighter fleet but
lately they have been using the Ford Super-Duty as the prime support vehicle. The new 2015 version is powerful enough to haul heavy trailers and large enough to double as a mobile office. The 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8, with higher power ratings for 2015, coupled with a 6R140 heavy duty Torqshift six-speed automatic transmission delivers improved torque, horsepower and fuel economy. The engine pumps out

important things. I really liked the layout of the gauges and controls in this vehicle; all are easily read and accessible. There are 12-volt outlets everywhere, two in the dash, one in the centre console, one in the back of that console, right beside the newly added 110V/150W power inverter and there’s a supply located in the rear under seat storage bin on the driver’s side. The front seats I found very comfortable and perfect for a long day at work. The rear seating positions were also very comfortable with lots of legroom. Noise levels in the cab, or lack thereof was amazing. This is must be the quietest diesel on the planet. It runs as quietly as a gasoline vehicle. You can easily hold conversations in the cab at any speed with no interference from outside sources. It was also a treat to be able to order from a drive thru window without having to shut the truck off! Remember, when travelling the back-roads this summer, pay attention to the Fire danger rating, follow any camp fire bans, and report any fires you see too 1-800663-5555 or *5555. Original Mini Cooper makes a comeback By Keith Morgan
Yet another version of the popular Mini is out and selling for around $120. What? – Well, it is a LEGO brick replica of the original Cooper Mk VII, produced between August 1997 and July 1998. That was the last generation of the original very mini-Mini, which was soon replaced by the Mini on steroids that BMW now produces very profitably. Interestingly, the price tag for the beautifully crafted “toy” is about the same as I paid for my used 1966 Mini Countryman Mark II back in 1974.
The LEGO version bears many authentic details, from the classic green and white color scheme with white wing mirrors and racing stripes. When I got mine, it had authentic woodworm in the bits that made it look like a mini Brit version of the Woodies that were so popular on this side of the Atlantic at the time. Dad suggested we strip out the wood but the garage guy thought the whole darn thing might fall apart if we did. Oh, brother! My dad, as a model plane painter of some repute, bought a few cans of paint and carefully painted the wood black. Then he hand painted the

rest of the body blue. Couldn’t see a brush stroke when he had finished. The model has doors, hood and trunk that open – more than you could say for mine on many occasions. Sporty fog lights are featured as well as a detailed four-cylinder engine –
wheel, and moving gearshift and handbrake. I had a hole in my roof at one point but the only thing that came through it was rain, by the bucketful. This Cooper model measures more than 11cm in height, stretches 25cm in length and is about 14cm wide. Dimen-
transversely mounted, of course. There’s also separate spare tire compartment. Had one of those to house a spare that was as bald as I am now. You can even remove the roof to access a tan colored interior with patterned seats, veneerstyle dashboard, turning steering

sionally it doesn’t sound much smaller that my real live, constantly stalling machine. Mind you that’s what happens when you aquaplane through gigantic duck pond-sized puddles on the narrow back lanes I travelled through the rural northwest of Lancashire on my way to journal-
ism school. The set is part of the Creator Expert series and I must say the thought of putting together 1,077-parts is somewhat daunting. Perhaps no more so than my old banger after a breakdown. A girlfriend at the time always wondered why it would quit in the darkest back lanes. Which reminds me, the LEGO car accessories includes a picnic basket, bottle and blanket . . . I had a blanket in the back of mine but it wasn’t for picnic use. Ah, those fond memories will come flooding back if Santa does his job this year. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Revved up for X-citement with a capital X By Alexandra Straub
Austin, TX – The thermostat is flying north of 30 degrees Celsius, but luckily, there’s a bit of a breeze. Thousands of individuals have gathered at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) track despite the heat. COTA is a 1,500-acre-plus sports and entertainment venue located just 20 minutes from downtown Austin. It’s where the Summer X Games are calling their new home until 2017. The
extreme sports (hence the X) competition previously took place in Los Angeles and hosts events like Moto X Freestyle, skateboarding, BMX and more. I’m here mainly for the motorcycles this day but I’m up for it all! To beat that heat, what used to be a decorative fountain or centerpiece for the venue is now a cool-down hotspot. People are splashing around in this sizeable, converted “swimming pool” while security guards idly stand by and make sure no one gets
too crazy. Aside from long lineups for cold beverages and minimal spots out of the sun, the “pool” is an ideal place to ward off heatstroke. However, you won’t catch me inside! I’m almost 100 percent sure it’s not chlorinated, or cleaned. Nor do I have a change of clothes. In between events, the people watching is at a premium. I could sit at any given spot and be thoroughly entertained at the cross section of society that walked
through the gates. The crowd, unlike many other sporting events, is younger. It’s comprised mainly of Gen Xers and Ys. But there’s room for everyone. As dictated by this year’s fashionable trends, girls wear shorts that barely cover their bottoms, and the guys don’t seem to oppose it. Those of legal drinking age cherish their ice-cold beer and drink it like it’s their last. Though they have one more in their other hand. They’re not about to
wait another half hour for more. Sitting in the bleachers, that aforementioned breeze is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it feels so good against the skin. But a curse because if the wind is blowing faster than 25 mph (or around that speed), the athletes can’t compete in the Moto X Freestyle; an event I’ve been dying to see. I patiently wait for updates on the grandstand screens. After all, I’ve been watching these games
x Games austin, Texas
on TV for as long as I can remember. The tricks that the athletes do, regardless of medium,
are nothing short of spectacular.

X-citement with a capital X Pick of the Week: continued from page A16
The Big Air contest for the BMXers call upon riders to drop into a massive roll, then jump from a kicker to catapult themselves into a quarterpipe. While doing that, they execute tricks, and try to wow the crowds. And. of course. go home with a gold medal. I’m all about doing crazy things on wheels but this is more than crazy. It’s just magical. I wish I had the guts to do this kind of thing. I think my mom is glad I don’t. Eagerly anticipating the show,
Since they literally fly through the air, upwards of 50 feet (give or take), their bodies and motorcycles act as a sail and they can easily be pushed outside of their landing zone.

the wind refuses to settle. But the riders come out and do a few tricks to test out if they’re able to compete. Yay! Since they literally fly through the air, upwards of 50 feet (give or take), their bodies
and motorcycles act as a sail and they can easily be pushed outside of their landing zone. It’s dangerous and a huge safety risk. The event is postponed. No. Yes, then cancelled. The athletes who travel from all across the world are probably even more disappointed that they can’t ride, says the commentator. It’s probably true. They want to show off their skills. We want to cheer for their efforts. Add me to that list of the officially bummed out. Well, what can you do? The
crowd’s energy is contagious, nonetheless. There’s no doubt that it’s a fun event to attend, even if the event you’re so excited to see doesn’t happen, and you’ll be on a plane the next morning before it all starts up again. But like a lot of major sporting events, sometimes, the best place to see all the action is in the comfort of your own home. Where you don’t have to wait half an hour for a cold one. And a breeze is always welcome. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca
There’s a sight for a sore eyes on these very hot summer days – a monster ice cream truck. The almost six-metre high truck was featured in an award winning series of TV ads in Europe for the new Skoda Octavia vRS model. It proved so popular with viewers that the Czech manufacturers toured the UK serving free ice cream to all comers. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.
