Hospitals: 1,900 jobs expected to be created
Health Minister Terry Lake
The North Island Hospitals Project is being cost-shared through a 60/40 spit between the Province and the Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital District. The project will create approximately 1,900 direct jobs and over 1,400 indirect jobs over the construction period. “Today’s groundbreaking events are the culmination of many years of planning and effort both by Island Health and the Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital board. It is another huge step forward in our goal of enhancing health care for individuals and families in our region,” said Claire Moglove, chair of the Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital District board. “As
the region’s population grows and health service demands continue to change, these two new state-of the-art hospital facilities will deliver high-quality acute care for years to come.” The new hospitals will be designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environment a l Design (LEED) Gold certification as part of government’s commitment to a greener and more sustainable future. Green hospital building design helps to create a healing environment for patients, staff and visitors. “These hospitals will pursue excellence and innovation to deliver safe, quality health care and improved health outcomes to patients and their families,” said Don Hubbard, Island Health board chair. “Using evidence-based design, the facilities will provide patient-focused care for all North Island region residents, particularly for the elderly and Aboriginal populations.” The North Island Hospitals Project is a public-private partnership between Island Health and Tandem Health Partners.

Campbell River Hospital. “I have been working closely with the health minister and government to help get these projects off the ground, and today we are seeing the payoff of that determination,” said Comox Valley MLA Don McRae. “These highly efficient acutecare facilities will provide quality, safe patient care, and help attract and retain health-care professionals to Mid-and North Island communities.” The two hospitals will deliver patient-centred health care to families living on north and midVancouver Island. Both hospitals will be constructed at the same time and be ready for patients by late 2017. Both hospitals will feature enhanced patient rooms, including large windows that maximize natural light and views for a calming environment. The majority of the rooms will be singlepatient with private bathrooms, helping to significantly reduce hospitalacquired infection rates, enhance patient privacy, improve quality of sleep and shorten recovery times.

ome citizens of the Laich-KwilTach Nation have had a 2,000-year long journey to get back to their people, according to carbon dating. On Thurday, members of the Nation transferred the remains of some of their ancestors to their rightful place beside their families in the Campbell River Indian Band’s cemetery near Discovery Marina. They had been retrieved from the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and the Royal BC Museum, which had been studying them. “It’s been a good journey to get them back where they belong,” said Olie Henderson, member of the band who was attending his second such event. “I have very good feelings today about having our ancestors back.” According to Deidre Cullon, an archaeologist who works with the band and helped facilitate the return of the remains, “Over the last couple of decades, museums and universities have been very

were transferred to their rightful resting places, the ceremony moved to the nearby beach, where citizens fed the spirits of the ancestors by placing traditional Laich-KwilTach food into the fire to give them strength for their journey. Construction on a new city drinking water system is expected to get underway in November. The city and BC Hydro have officially agreed to terms for funding, timing and construction of a new city water supply in John Hart reservoir. Coun. Andy Adams, who has represented council on the BC Hydro liaison committee for five years, said the deal was a long time coming. “The city and BC Hydro have been working together since 2010 to plan for construction timing and funding for a new community water supply that will be in place before the John Hart Generating Station replacement project disconnects the city’s existing water supply in 2017,” Adams said in a news release. As part of Hydro’s generating station reconstruction project, the three penstocks that currently deliver the city’s drinking water from John Hart Lake will be removed and replaced with a single underground tunnel. The city, meanwhile, has been working to come up with a new drinking water intake system to take the place of the penstocks. The new system will involve a new intake and pump chamber at the

John Hart Lake that will connect to a new large diameter, transmission pipe connecting the city’s Elk Falls Water Quality Centre to the water system source. The project will be done in two phases, with delivery and installation of the new transmission pipe being done first, followed by the intake, pump chamber and connection to the Water Quality Centre as the second phase. At its July 22 meeting, council voted to award delivery of the steel transmission pipe to Northwest Pipe Company for $908,544, which is just under the city’s estimated value of $1.008
million for the work. Council has budgeted $16.7 million for the entire water intake project, with the cost spread out over three years. BC Hydro has committed to pay 75 per cent of the costs, up to a maximum of $12.5 million, with the city making up the remainder through its water utility fund. Adams said council will still try to secure grant funding to help with the city’s portion. “As stated throughout the process, the city will continue to seek funding opportunities from senior levels of government for this project,” Adams said. “We appreciate the contribution
from BC Hydro and will explore every opportunity to minimize the capital cost to city taxpayers. “The good news is that Campbell River will be getting a brand new, state-of-the-art water supply system for a maximum of 25 cents on the dollar that will last for another 50 years.” Ron Neufeld, the city’s general manager of operations, said the intent is to begin construction this year, with subsequent pieces completed in 2015 and 2016. “The pipe material is expected to be on site in November and then we can proceed with the tender of the installation of the pipe,” Neufeld said.

Our View
Overlooked on B.C. day long weekend
In the last hours of the B.C. Day long weekend many of us missed the passing of a very important event. Some of us forgot, while others chose to ignore it. We say: We In our attempts to hang on to would be wise not that final sunny holiday afternoon, to take our peace it’s almost excusable to let the for granted centennial anniversary of the First World War go unnoticed. But it’s not really forgivable at all. We have to remember. Of course many people did
acknowledge the historic day, but it was ill-timed and didn’t receive the attention it deserved. And while it’s so very important to simply remember, 100 years is a fitting landmark period to assess how we each feel about war today. The war to end all wars did nothing of the sort. It started a trend: the industrialization of war. With leaders as much as ever trading their citizens’ lives for personal gain—along with instant updates on our phones with pictures of conflicts around the world—it can be all-too persistent and
overwhelming. As a result, caring about strife in far reaches of the planet might seem pointless. How does one think about war today, in a peaceful country so far removed from conflict by geography and time? It’s an individual pursuit with no sure answers, but one well worth exploring. We Canadians are lucky to live in a peaceful, stable country. We should be wise not to take it for granted. – Black Press

School year already behind
Teachers are fighting for better learning and working conditions. They are fighting for our children, to improve class size and increase support for children with special needs. If you’ve been into local classrooms lately, you already know that classes are jam-packed to capacity and in many cases over capacity. One special needs child without teacher aide support can totally monopolize a teacher’s time. In some cases, there are as many as five special needs children placed in a classroom. You can see how this would seriously affect the amount of teacher time available for the rest of the class when there is not enough special needs support. As a former student in a classroom, you probably know how classrooms operate, right? You show up and the teacher teaches. What you may not know is that June is when principals and teachers begin preparations for an orderly start in September. As you know, none of this work has been done as teachers were locked out of their classrooms. It is now August when teachers would begin to prepare their classrooms for an organized and exciting start to the new school year. Continued on Pg. 9

B.C. government should consult on forestry changes By Ben Parfit British Columbia’s forests represent the single-largest renewable asset that we have, a public resource shared with First Nations across the province. Whatever the fate may be of our non-renewable natural gas resources, our forests can and should be there for generations to come. Healthy forests ensure that we have clean water to drink and clean air to breathe; a diversity of animal and plant species that is found in few places on earth; a vital tool to assist us in addressing climate change; and a source of wood and other forest products that for decades has delivered economic, social and cul-
tural benefits. For these reasons and many more, decisions about how our forests are managed are of vital public policy importance. In the lead-up to the last provincial election, the government proposed changes in an omnibus bill that would have opened the door for a significant increase in the number of Tree Farm Licences or TFLs. Such licences grant their recipients long-term, compensable rights to log trees on defined areas of public forestland. Due to concerns raised by numerous British Columbians, the government chose to remove the TFL clauses from the omnibus bill. During and after the provincial election campaign, however, the government indicated that it
intended to reintroduce legislation that could once again result in more TFLs being awarded. However, before doing so the government said it would consult with the citizens of British Columbia. It has been more than six months since that consultation commitment was made, but the government has yet to reveal what British Columbians will be asked to comment on, or what opportunities they will have to voice their concerns. Disputes over the management and conservation of British Columbia’s forests are legendary and have often pitted one or more groups against one another. Clayoquot Sound, Haida Gwaii, the Nemiah and Stein valleys, and the Great
Bear Rainforest are among many examples. Far less common is when groups that sometimes oppose one another find common ground. The government’s proposed TFL policy is one such exception to the general rule. And history tells us that it is an area where government should proceed with extreme caution. In the late 1980s, the then Social Credit government enacted a similar proposal into law and subsequently had to rescind the legislation after hundreds of British Columbians turned out at public meetings and voiced their concerns. Eight organizations representing a wide array of British Columbians signed a letter calling on the govern-
ment to honor its public consultation promise. The groups represent a significant cross section of the provincial population and include public sector and forest industry workers, First Nations, environmental organizations and the forest industry. The signatories to the letter may have different ideas about what changes to forest policy are needed to make for a more socially, environmentally and economically just world. But what they and others want is to be part of a conversation — a conversation that government has promised and would be wise to deliver. Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives

These people need No pride in 3x2 Seawatch Medical Clinic supporting a bully shelters In regards to the courthouse being disgusting. Maybe you should check this facility very late at night – these people have no homes and use not only the courthouse but other government buildings as their personal housing and toilets. These people that work there do so with dedication, compassion, professionalism and do so under extreme conditions. How many teams would it take to get these buildings ready for first morning clients? First you have to wait for these people to leave because they will run you off – then clean and you can bet people that do this job do not get paid minimum wage – would you clean up this mess of human waste every morning for minimum wage? It is costing us all many dollars. These people need shelters. Joan Stark Campbell River
Classes: Less than ideal
Continued from Pg. 8
Of course, teachers could give up their pursuit to maintain high standards and quality education for our children. Children would show up and teachers would continue to teach in bulging classrooms with less and less opportunity to help individuals. Teachers would still get paid, but our children would have a less than ideal learning experience. As parents, we all want our kids to have the best start in life with a quality education. The government and the teachers have set their boundaries. It’s all about the money. Are our children worth it? Julie Johnson Campbell River

Alder Street resident Bill Andrew disagrees with the city that the intersection at Evergreen and Alder does not warrant a four-way stop. The city based its decision on a 2011 traffic count in February that showed the intersection is not busy enough. City staff said the volume split (which compares traffic volume flowing north-south with the amount of traffic going east-west) is 87-13 at the intersection, while a traffic split of 60-40 is the threshold for consideration of a four-way stop. But Andrew said his and most of his neighbours’ main concern is the speed of the traffic. “My principle focus is to do something about the speeding on Alder,” Andrew said. “I was surprised (the city report) seemed to focus on the traffic on Evergreen and

they would be forced to slow down earlier. “A four-way stop should have a traffic calming effect similar to that which resulted from the four-way stop at Merecroft Road as well as enabling traffic travelling to or from the traffic light at South Dogwood Street and Evergreen Road to safely access Alder Street,” Andrew wrote. Council, however, has not yet embraced adding another four-way stop. At a meeting last month, council accepted

city staff ’s determination that a four-way stop is not warranted at the intersection, but council did vote to have city staff monitor the intersection, particularly once construction on the new hospital is underway. That’s welcome news to Andrew who believes there is a problem with traffic loads. “The traffic volume on South Alder is also a concern,” Andrew said. “Particularly during rush hours northbound between about 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and southbound between about 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.” Meanwhile, the city is in the middle of an Alder Street corridor review which recommends a cross-section of two wide travel lanes, on-street parking on both sides of the street, and a wider sidewalk. Specific intersections will be recommended for curb bulges and medians. The report is expected to be released in the fall.

the issue is to slow down the traffic on South Alder. If I drive 50 kilometres an hour during the rush hour, I can tell you there will be a long line of cars piling up behind me.” Andrew, who had a friend killed at the Evergreen and Alder intersection more than 15 years ago, wrote a letter to city council to voice his concerns. Andrew commended council on its decision to add a four-way stop at the Merecroft and Alder intersection earlier this year and said while it has had a traffic calming effect in the immediate area, vehicles are still speeding once they pass the stop signs. “There is still an issue with speeding on South Alder Street, most noticeably in the northbound direction between Merecroft Road and 2nd Avenue,” Andrew wrote. “In my view this is because of the downward slope of South

The Strathcona Regional District has hired two new staff members to help fill in the gaps of an “operationally vulnerable” organization, according to a recent report. Russ Hotsenpiller, regional district chief administrative officer, announced at the July 24 board meeting that two brand-new, full-time positions approved by the board in February have been filled. “We’re at a fairly big moment,” Hotsenpiller said. “We’ve hired two individuals who will be coming on as of August 11.” Sheila Van Nus, with t he C omox Va l l e y
Regional District, will fill the role of special projects coordinator while Michele Saunders, a coordinator with the Ministry of Children and Family Development, has been hired as the board services coordinator. In a report to the board in February, Hotsenpiller described the special projects coordinator role as one that would fill a “gap in expertise and capacity” at the policy development level. The $102,400 position will support several departments, including land use planning, corporate services, legal matters, recreation and finance on an as-needed basis. The $83,200 board services coordinator is a position working out of the chief administrative
officer’s office that will support elected directors and help the chief administrative officer with executive duties. Hotsenpiller recommended the two positions in his February report to the board which called the Strathcona Regional District chronically understaffed and revealed that staff are often not able to meet core service requirements, they are missing out on their vacation time and are working significant overtime hours. “Current staff levels are impacting productivity of the organization,” Hotsenpiller wrote in the report. “If a core employee is sick for an extended period of time, or an employee leaves

the organization, work in that area stops. As such, the organization has limited alternatives and is operationally vulnerable.” Hotsenpiller said with five senior managers, the organization is currently understaffed at the corporate level and is unable to consistently meet core service demands. The new hirings mark the first time since 2009 that the Strathcona Regional District has added a new position. Meanwhile, the regional district is saying good-bye to two longtime staff members. Josie Rohne, facility manager at Strathcona Gardens, and Beth Rees, the regional district’s community services manager, are both retiring.

Meet the artists behind the artworks
Transpertifen is one of the pieces in Bob McLeod’s exhibition Vestiges.
The public is invited to a special reception at the Campbell River Art Gallery Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. to meet the current exhibiting artists Edith Krause, Doris Auxier and Bob McLeod. Krause and Auxier have created Lament of the Butterflies, cosponsored by McVeigh Contracting and John and Bania Chan. Auxier’s installation entitled Mausoleum: Red List Lament consists of piano player scrolls suspended from the ceiling with paintings of red list plants hung amidst them, while Krause’s multi-media works called The Butterfly Effect, layer screenprinted maps of invasive species and digital photographs of butterfly wings to create beautiful and disturbing images. Vestiges, by Bob McLeod, is an exhibition of multi-media sculptures, created with glass and metal. The exhibition, sponsored by Gary and Pam
Dobbs, is inspired by cast-off parts found along our shores and in the trash. McLeod transforms these abandoned pieces into sculpture by blowing glass through the metal forms. Both visitors and locals have been enjoying these timely and fascinating exhibitions. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet the creative people behind these fantastic exhibitions at the Gallery Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. Both exhibitions will remain open until Sept. 12. aturday, Aug. 16 is the date for Campbell River’s first annual music festival – Rockin’ The Island. With 10 All-Canadian bands and artists performing, this year’s talent will deliver an incredible show that all ages will enjoy. One of this year’s festival artists will be Kuba Oms. For Oms, it’s all about love. But it’s not your typical tale of love and loss. Oms’ new album, entitled ADHD, is an insight in to the human condition and our rapid development to an age of technology and electronics: losing our attention spans and part of our humanity along the way. During the recording of his new album Oms discovered, just like many artists (Tim Burton, Justin Timberlake and Jim Carrey, to name a few) that he has ADHD (Attention Defi-

cit Hyperactivity Disorder). Apparent when covering genres ranging from pop and electronic to soul, reggae and funk, ADHD reflects a personal embrace of what makes us who we are, and digs to the root of our inability to focus on what is most important in life: love. Oms loves writing songs. “I really enjoy trying to write something meaningful and sneak it in to a pop song. I’ve been the longtime frontman of B.C.’s influential electronic jam band Velvet, and I’ve been blessed to share the stage with artists such
as Common, De la Soul, Metric, The Chemical Brothers, Maceo Parker and Mark Farina to name a few. I’m blessed to play with some amazing musicians and think I speak for everyone when I say that Festivals are where we truly thrive,” Oms says. Oms opted to co-produce many of the songs on this latest album and it’s given him the opportunity for tremendous growth as a producer. To share the studio with guys like Gavin Brown (Metric, Billy Talent, Tragically Hip) and Joby Baker (Alex Cuba), Davey Badiuk (Dragonette) and Greg
Reely (Serena Ryder, Delerium) is both humbling and terrifically educational. Now it’s time to tour and Kuba is excited to tour this album worldwide. Tickets for Rockin’ the Island are online at www.tidemarktheatre. com till Aug. 11; then on site at the music festival site, 1490 Island Highway North in Campbellton from August 12 - 16. Tickets are $70 for adults, $50 for students, $40 for children 4 – 11 years and free for 3 and under; Family Passes available July 30th for $199. For more details, www. rockintheisland.ca

t’s been said that there probably isn’t many people in the Campbell River area that haven’t been to Camp Homewood at least once in their lifetime. “I go to lots of different places in town and I mention I am from Camp Homewood and they say ‘Oh, I go there and my kids go there,’” Camp Director Irwin Harder said. He added that there are families here who have third and fourth generations attending the camp. The popular youth and family camp on Quadra

Island has been a mainstay in the region for 70 years now and this summer it is honouring that legacy with a seasonlong celebration. The festivities began last month with a celebratory weekend of activities and a gala dinner hosted by Deb Gray, former MP who was a camper at Homewood during her teens and credits the camp with having a major influence on her life. In her adulthood, she continues to support Camp Homewood. Homewood’s origin goes back to when the Pacific Coast Children’s Mission was founded in 1944 by Alf and

The first summer camp was held in 1947 near Terrace but the need for a permanent base was realized and provided for in October of 1948 when the Baynes moved onto a portion of the present Homewood property. The first camp at Homewood was held the following summer. Over the years the
camp program has expanded, involving more campers and reaching out to more people every year. Homewood is an openly Christian camp whose mission is “To present the love of God and the claims of Christ on an individual’s life in an unthreatening atmosphere through quality programmes and caring relationships, utilizing God’s creation.” The facility is nondenominational but is run by a board adhering to Christian principles.
Despite that focus, the camp is attended by many people just looking for wholesome outdoor activities and a refuge from the pressures of daily living. “Our take here at Homewood is that we want to be able to retreat away from the world,” Harder said. “People can come here to feel at peace and through that, learn about God.” The camp offers a range of activities and comes up with creative ways for people to attend. emphasis on family but besides youth camps, there are mother and daughter camps, father and son camps, homeschooling camps and many others. School programs are offered as well and the camp has catered to youth organizations like Guides and Scouts. “We try to offer a simple program,” he said. “Our activities are a bit more traditional camping activities.” In the summer, there are week-long themed camps offered: a harbour camp, focusing on the main property in Gowlland Harbour; a ranch camp, focusing on horsemanship; a sailing camp; and a Woodsman Camp. Homewood is located on 200 acres on Quadra Island and has two components. The main camp has permanent facilities on the shores of Gowlland Harbour – stables, barns, lodging, docks, archery and shooting
ranges and more. Further north on Quadra, the Woodsman Camp is located on the shores of Main Lake in the interior of northern Quadra Island. It’s emphasis is on wilderness skills and rustic camp living. Weekend retreats are popular as well and run the gamut from Mother and Daugther weekends, Mother and Son, Valenteen, New Year’s Family Camp, Homeschool Family Camp, Father and Daughter weekends and Father and Son weekends. Harder said anyone is welcome come out to the camp and get a tour of the facilities. “Contact us if you’re interested but don’t know what it is about, and I will give you a tour,” he said. ata from a 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey revealed that nearly 23 percent of Canadians aged 15 and older reported that most days were "quite a bit or extremely stressful." While those figures marked a slight improvement from the previous year's survey, it's apparent that stress is still a considerable concern for people.

calm your nerves Though many people unfortunately regard stress as an inevitable side effect of adulthood, it's important to avoid characterizing stress as simply a byproduct of a difficult and/or successful life and career. Even momentary stress, often referred to as "acute stress," like the kind that appears when stuck in a traffic jam, can have a potentially devastating impact on overall health. Acute stress causes an
increase in heart rate and stronger contractions of the heart muscle, and some medical professionals have suggested there is a link between repeated episodes of acute stress and heart attack. Regular use of relaxation techniques to reduce stress can help to counteract the effects of long-term stress. The following are two popular relaxation techniques that may help relieve stress in a healthy way.
Meditation There are many types of meditation, but in general people who meditate employ certain techniques when meditating. These techniques may include maintaining a specific posture or finding a quiet, distraction-free location to meditate. Many practitioners of meditation choose to recite a positive mantra that

they repeat throughout their session. While many people question the effectiveness of meditation, research has suggested that routine meditation sessions can alter the brain's neural pathways and make a person more capable of combatting stress.
Yoga Yoga has grown increasingly popular in recent years, and much of that can be traced to the multitude of health benefits that have been linked to this typically low-impact practice of the mind and body. Studies have suggested yoga is effective at lowering heart rate and blood pressure and can even relieve anxiety and depression. Those are beneficial side effects for sufferers of stress, which over time can contribute to high blood pressure and arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat) and even cause people to worry too much about minor things or suspect bad things are about to happen.

In addition to limiting stress-releasing hormones, positive thinking may inspire people to live healthier lifestyles that make them more likely to get routine physical activity and eat a healthy diet. Happy people also may be less likely to use tobacco products or alcohol as a coping mechanism when dealing with elevated stress levels. Becoming a more positive thinker can take a little effort for those without a natural inclination for optimism. But because positive thinking boasts such significant health benefits, men and women might want to try the following methods to embrace their optimistic side. * Embrace humor. Surround yourself with others who bring a smile to your face. Look for ways to laugh as much as possible. Choose comedies at the movie theater and find humor in everyday happenings. * Identify areas that need change. Think about moments in life that may bring you down or inspire negative reactions. If work is problematic, figure out ways to make it better and work toward improving the situation. * Be supportive of yourself. Consider what you would say to others and then treat yourself the same way. Would you be overly negative or derogatory toward a complete stranger? Probably not, and there is no reason to be harsh with yourself, either. Push negative thoughts away. * Volunteer. One way to see the world in a more positive light is to help others who may be less fortunate than you. Volunteering not only helps others, but it also can help you put your own problems in perspective. Volunteering also helps you feel good about your efforts, which can translate into positive thinking. * Think like a child. Take a cue from youngsters and find joy in the little things. Let children be the leaders in activities and mimic what they do. You just may find yourself laughing more and enjoying yourself. Being silly for a little while is one way to recapture the feelings of youth.

Although an impressive record, the World Class Competition would not exist without the support of the city, sponsors and spectators. Thank you for making it possible.
This first formal competition consisted of 1 Canadian Championship, 15 events and $5,000 in prizes. Popularity and support for the event began to grow each year and in 2004, with a prize package of $25,000, the Salmon Festival’s Logging Sports event hosted it’s first

The Dutch program Ruben vs. Geraldine, a reality television show based in The Netherlands, has sent the two competitors on a cross-Canada trip, engaging in various competitions against each other along the way. The show, according to Lilburn, “Is kind of like Amazing Race, except it’s just the two of them,” and at their Campbell River stop, they will compete on Saturday (Aug. 9) night in various Logger Sports events. They will be burling, single-hand bucking,
axe throwing, and doing a power saw cut and choker race. Part reality TV and part travel show, Ruben vs. Geraldine is just another way the world will learn of the region and its beauty, as well as the friendly folks who call it home. Combined with the international broadcasting of the Logger Sports events themselves, we’re sure to find more visitors in the region once they can call their travel agents and get something booked.

Salmon Festival’s Logging Sports Salmon and professional wrestling together at last? By Mike Davies – Campbell River Mirror Salmon Festival attendees who find themselves in Nunns Creek Park on the Friday night are in for a first-time surprise.
E.O. Mike Becherer, who will challenge the reigning British Columbia Champion, Kenny Doll, for this title.
A loud, energetic and angry surprise.
I am really looking forward to wrestling in front of my home-town crowd,” said Becherer. “He is the champion for a reason. It would be amazing to capture the title from him here in Campbell River.”
One of the new features at this year’s Festival is the addition of Pure Wrestling Association (PWA) matchups on the mainstage after the completion of the day’s Logger Sports competitions, before the musical guests start their sets. Beginning at 7:00, festivalgoers will be treated to PWA bouts involving such athletes as Cremator Von Slasher, Scott Steel, BJ Laredo, TJ Harley, as well as a match between Campbell River’s own
Admission to the wrestling action, and everything else on offer each day (other than food and beverage purchases) is included in your admission to the Salmon Festival itself. $5 per person gets you in the gate, and children two and under are free.

The Campbell River Target store has donated $1,000 to United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island to boost the organization’s efforts to help the most vulnerable people in our community. Target has been giving and volunteering at United Way since its first store opened in the U.S. in 1962. In 2013, Target contributed more than $250,000 to local chapters of United Way across Canada. “Target is committed to fighting poverty and to supporting the communities where our team members live and work,” said Jason Fern, Store Team Leader for the Campbell River Target. The $1,000 donation will go towards United Way’s Community Fund that supports 9 programs in Campbell River that give hope to 1,870 people, including: 100 parents who receive parenting skills; 400 seniors who receive a lunch and participate in an exercise program; 250 women and children who are housed, safe from abuse. “United Way needs the support of the entire community to work on the root causes of the social issues that so many people in our region struggle with,” commented Laura Heikkila, Resource Development, Annual Giving with United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island. “Donations from corporations like Target go a long way towards helping the most vulnerable in our community and to inspiring others to give to local charities.”
Associates at The Home Depot store in Campbell River are committed to helping put an end to youth homelessness. From May 29-July 2, they asked their customers to donate $2 at the checkout as part of The Orange Door Project fundraising campaign. Their generous customers responded and $5,730 was raised throughout the campaign. These funds will support a renovation project at The John Howard Society of North Island (JHSNI)’s transitional youth housing facility, Barnett House. The Orange Door Project is The Home Depot Canada Foundation’s response to one of the most urgent social issues facing Canadians today – youth homelessness. On any given night, more than 6,000 young people are without a place to call home. That is why the Foundation has made a threeyear, $10M pledge to support renovation and repair projects and programs that provide vulnerable youth with access to safe, stable housing and support services. This fundraising campaign is one of many projects in support of The Orange Door Project initiative. Wendy Richardson, JHSNI’s Executive Director, said these funds will be a huge help for the Society’s work with homeless youth in Campbell River. “Barnett House provides a safe, stable home for youth ages 16-19 while they work on the skills they need to live independently. We are delighted with the effort The Home Depot associates put into raising funds for youth who truly need the support.”

While the locals know the lakes and the best times to fish, the newby will try a lake and see what happens. Many anglers will simply fish from shore and cast out lures or even a fly in hopes of catching a trout. I started using a belly boat a number of years back and the small boat will get you off shore and into the area where you are finding fish. A number of people will have a small boat or canoe and paddle around a specific lake.

In Campbell River, Echo Low is a spot where fishing can be very good and when the weather warms up can be slow down and even be spotty. Craig Brown, son of the late Barrie Brown who purchased Sequoia with his wife Lynda, said his father intentionally built the course that way. “He got into patio home development so people could live on the golf course,” Brown said. “The golf course really is in people’s back yard.” There are 20 patio homes just off the course at hole number eight and a few homes near holes six, three, four and five. A third and final phase of patio homes will add additional homes near hole five. Brown said Barrie’s inspiration came from his travels. “He got a lot of inspiration from his trips to Disney World, the resorts always greet you with Welcome Home and that’s why there’s the Welcome Home sign as you enter (Sequoia Springs),” Brown said. “They’ve always tried to treat it as a home, that everyone is a guest of Barrie’s.” Barrie and Lynda bought the golf club in 1975 to ensure the property remained a golf course. It was originally a working farm that doubled as a golf course on the weekends. After the Browns purchased the land, they added acreage to the property which stands at 360 acres today.

“When Barrie and Lynda purchased the course it was a nine-hole course. In 1986 they expanded to an 18-hole configuration,” Brown said. “In 1991, we planted 1,400 sequoia trees.” Barrie also planted an array of flowers in an effort to spruce up the grounds. “They needed to do some improvements to the course and Barrie had started a greenhouse,” Brown said. From there, it took off, with the Browns adding more and more until they eventually had 30 gardens to tend to. Brown said Sequoia Springs’ nickname, the Garden Course, was coined by a travelling golfer impressed by all of the gardens. Brown said Barrie took a lot of pride in the gardens and the natural beauty of the course. He also put it to good use. When the new clubhouse was built in 1998, Barrie took all the wood from the trees on the property and as much as possible, used materials that were readily available. The spacious clubhouse includes a pro shop, a bar and kitchen, as well as a banquet room that is used for meetings, reunions, weddings, and celebrations of life. There is also a chapel in the garden that has hosted many a wedding ceremony. And that’s not all. Brown and his younger brother are carrying on the work Barrie had started but wasn’t able to finish. They are working towards removing holes 10 and 11 and replacing them with two new holes. Brown said he figures the expansion will take one to two years. Mosquito Tyees take provincial title Last weekend saw an exciting few days of baseball at the Mosquito A Provincial Championships in Sidney, and in the end it was Campbell River’s own Tyees that came out on top. The tournament, which included the 10 best teams from across B.C. began with a skills competition on Thursday night. The Tyees left no question that they have been working hard to hone their skills, finishing second in three of the four competitions. The Tyees first game of the round robin took place Friday morning against the Tsawwassen A’s. Ryan Deagle, Landon Bowers, Gareth MacDonald and Carter Hall came up with beautiful hits. Ethan Vaton made some incredible plays at short stop, using his strong arm to gun down several Tsawwassen runners. Ty L u d w i k o w s k i pitched the first two and half innings and was impressive on the mound, allowing only only run, en route to a convincing 26-6 win for the Tyees. Next up was the Ladner Red Sox on Friday afternoon. Owen Lagos pitched an outstanding two and a half innings, allowing no runs. Bowers relieved Lagos for the remainder of the game and showed an equally impressive pitching performance, allowing only only run. Breydan Riecker leaped in the air to catch a hard hit ball and ran across second base for the double play. Offensively, the Tyees came up with some big hits as the Tyees mercied the Red Sox with an 11-1 score. On Saturday morning, the Tyees were dealt their

only loss of the tournament when they faced the Chilliwack Cougars. Hall, Riecker and Wyatt Dumont shared the pitching duties with Vaton coming in to throw a scoreless last inning but it wouldn’t be enough as the Tyees fell short with a 10-9 final score. for the Tyees, and they came out strong against the Kamloops Riverdogs. Dumont pitched a solid five innings, allowing only three runs. The boys were also on their bats with Vaton and Dumont getting a home run each on errors, Ludwikowski hitting a home

score. The Tyees finished first in their pool and met the Abbotsford Angels in the semi-final game Sunday morning. Vaton put on an impressive performance, pitching the entire game and allowing only one run. Lagos, Deagle, Hall, and Bowers all came up with big hits while Ian Mills, Dumont, Riecker and Vaton all made offensive contributions as the Tyees mercied the Angels with an 11-1 final score. The excited and nervous Tyees earned a berth to the final game against the Victoria Eagles, who had not lost a game all season,. The Tyees started the game off on the right foot with bases loaded when Hall belted the ball into deep right field with two RBIs. Lagos pitched five stress-
ful innings against a hard hitting team and allowed only five runs. Vaton hit a triple in the third inning but by the top of the fifth, the score was 5-3 for Victoria. The Tyees didn’t give up; Gareth MacDonald hit a nice double to left field that started a rally. Mills laid down a perfect bunt and the bases were loaded when Riecker stepped up to the plate and dropped one into left field, driving in Belanko for a run. Next up was Vaton who came up with the most important hit of his life – a triple into deep right field that scored three more runs. Ludwikowski made an unbelievable catch at first base, stopping the Eagles offence in the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, Hall was brought in to close
and quickly struck out the first batter. A hard hit by the Eagles got a runner on first but the next hit was grabbed by Vaton, who made an out at second. Hall demonstrated nerves of steel when he threw three quick strikes to get the third out and seal the Tyees victory with a score of 7-5. In total, the Tyees outscored their opponents by an astounding 88-26 in the tournament. They are proud to have brought home the championship banner and look forward to defending their title next year. The coaching staff is very proud of all the hard work the boys put in and also want to acknowledge all of the support and dedication that the parents provided throughout the season.

have signed a Partnership Agreement for the trails in the Snowden Demonstration Forest. This means that the RCCC will provide trail maintenance services and ensure the trails are safe to ride and MoTCA will ensure that the RCCC is included in any recreation decisions that may affect the Snowden Forest. Snowden is also the home of The Campbell River 50 km Trail Challenge. This annual event features some of the best trails we have to offer and is a test of any rider’s stamina, both physical and mental. Comprised of two loops, the actual loop length is 27km for a total of 54km.
Pump House The Pump House Trail was the first true mountain biker’s area in Campbell River, built by riders for riders. Suitable for the beginner with a little experience, yet with some challenging sections for the more seasoned rider.

The purpose of the club is to promote bicycling as well as encourage and facilitate touring, races, bicycle outings, and all forms of recreational bicycling activities.
Riding Areas
Snowden Demonstration Forest
The club hosts group rides, trail days, organized rides to other communities, and good times for all. The River City Cycling Club has a unique working relationship with BC Parks land managers and works directly with them for mutual stewardship and maintenance goals of the existing trails that exist in the parks area.
Riding on the Wet Coast If you have to ride during periods of sustained precipitation, choose trails that are rocky and well drained. The Pumphouse trails are well suited to wet conditions and are underrated for their fun factor. Check them out if you haven’t been in there in a while. Enjoy the
In Campbell River we have three main riding areas, Snowden, Pump House and The Beaver Lodge, and a couple of lesser used areas, Menzies Mt., McIvor Lake and Woods Creek. There are numerous other areas of trails, however most are not bike friendly, either because of terrain or use restrictions. We are fortunate that our trails remain snow free most years except for a couple of weeks mid-winter. In the summer there can be a shortage of water for our four legged riding partners. It is not uncommon to see deer, elk, bear and occasionally a cougar in any of our riding areas. Please be respectful of the inhabitants and carry out any litter. Also be aware that in most of the Snowden and on Menzies Mountain, help is many hours away in the event of serious injury. In the event of an unrepairable mechanical, the walk out can take
This is our largest area with over 100 kms of trails. This is a cross country and all-mountain area, well suited to 5” travel bikes. Although Snowden Forest trail difficulties range from Green Circle to Black Diamond, these trails are not well suited to the absolute beginner rider, as most of the trails are challenging with technical features. The trails traverse a variety of terrain, from dense forest to open rock bluff with incredible views. Unique to this area is the almost total absence of roads. Most of the trails are signed and marked for the preferred direction of travel, although most can be ridden in the reverse direction by a strong climber. The trails of the Snowden Forest are designated for non-motorized use, so leave the quads at home. The River City Cycle Club and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts (MoTCA)
Trails are in forest and on open rock bluff, the entire area is within Elk Falls Provincial Park and the trails are recognized by Parks for bike use. A competent rider with a knowledge of these trails could cover them all in a couple hours easily.
The Beaver Lodge Quite flat and with many of the “trails” built on very old rail grades, this is the area most suitable for the family or complete beginner. A strong rider with area knowledge can ride everything “the Beav” has to offer in a little over an hour. There are a few hidden gems in the “Beav” with technical features that will challenge most riders.
Other Areas McIvor Lake/Skidmarks. This area comprises mostly intermediate trails. Woods Creek has a small network of fairly easy trails with little elevation gain. Woodsman’s Wilderness Trails on Menzies Mountain are Campbell River’s newest and most remote riding area that contrasts the mountain’s rugged “working forest” character with its pristine subalpine meadows, mountain views and exhilarating descents on the way down. If you are pedaling up, expect a long, steep and rough access road climb of an hour and half to the start of the trail. The descent is a long XC and technical DH trail from the end of the road access back to the starting point, with some optional but highly recommended trails in the lower elevations, such as Fauxhawk. The trails vary in difficulty throughout the descent, but riders should be very comfortable with technically difficult DH trails before attempting to ride this remote area. Many riders take over five hours to complete the round trip, however a seasoned rider can complete a loop in half that time. Woodsman Wilderness Trails are not maintained by the River City Cycle Club. Trail conditions (including snowpack) and hazards will vary with the season. Ride within your limits and at your own risk! (Note: Mohawk will NOT appeal to any but the most skilled and risk tolerant riders.)

Popular trail at John Hart to reopen Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Construction is underway on a new pedestrian bridge along the Station View Trail. The bridge will provide trail users with a front row seat of BC Hydro’s John Hart Generating Station replacement project. “The bridge will take trail users over the three penstocks and provide a unique viewpoint over the generating station and back towards the penstock corridor,” Stephen Watson, spokesperson for BC Hydro, wrote in a project update report. The bridge will reroute the Station View Trail, which diverts Canyon View Trail users up and around the existing Generating Station that will eventually be closed off. The Station View Trail is expected to re-open on August 15, with the new foot bridge unveiled. The $1-billion project involves removing the

The project is currently in the preliminary stages, with about 50 full-time workers on site. Watson said that is expected to change as

The Campbell River Chamber of Commerce, North Island Employment Foundations Society (NIEFS), and North Vancouver Island Aboriginal Training Society will be posting contact information for those unions on their respective websites. Construction on the five-year project officially got underway last month and will peak in 2016 when approximately 350 workers will be involved. Dragon boaters support the Hospice Society Members of the BraveHearts and River Spirit dragon boat teams met with Iona Wharton and Julie Collis, Directors for Campbell River Hospice, to present a cheque for $3,508.10. The funds were raised at the teams’ Race the River dragon boat regatta on June 28. Much of the total came from proceeds from the Marine Harvest salmon barbecue and sales of carnations donated by Quality Foods for the carnation ceremony at the annual event. “We are very proud to make this donation to Hospice,” said BraveHearts president, Marlene Wocks. “And it is the continuous support of the entire community of Campbell River that makes our event successful and allows us to do this.” Members of the Race the River organizing committee, (left to right) Marlene Wocks, Nick Hindle, Carole Dodds, Calvin Krack, Jeanne MacGregor, Heather MacKenzie present a cheque to Julie Collis, Campbell River Hospice Society, director of operations.

Why is Sterling Silver
Juicy Goodness!
Beef superior? Let us count the ways.
It’s the best of the best
Handpicked from the best of the highest grade of beef, Sterling Silver beef has more flavour than lower-quality beef, providing exceptional tenderness, juiciness and taste in every bite.
It’s Beautifully Marbled
Marbling is the white flecks of fat within the muscle that melt into the meat as it cooks, giving it succulent flavour and texture. Sterling Silver beef is highly marbled for superior taste and texture.
It’s aged just right
Sterling Silver cuts are aged no fewer than 21 days to maximize tenderness and richness of flavour.
