Water-use banned after tailings dam bursts The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) has extended its water-use ban issued Aug. 4 to include the entire Quesnel and Cariboo rivers systems right to the Fraser River. The water-use ban followed a breach of the Mt. Polley Mine tailings pond near Likely early that morning. The CRD initially reported waterways affected by this event to include Quesnel and Polley lakes, and Hazeltine and Cariboo creeks. People living in, or travelling through, the affected locations are advised a complete water-use ban is in effect until further notice in the above mentioned areas. They are told to not drink, cook or bathe in the water, and to avoid water-based recreational activities, etc. Only bottled water should be used until further notice. Shortly after issuing the alert, the CRD stated consumption by people and livestock in these areas further down the watershed is not recommended. Boiling will not help, and swimming and other activities along the rivers are at your own risk. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett confirmed the tailings pond dam at the Mt. Polley Mine site breached and released an estimated 10 million cubic metres of (contaminated) water and 4.5 million cubic metres of fine sand into Polley Lake. The CRD stated it received information from helicopter reconnaissance taken early on Aug. 4, which showed a (comparatively) small amount of debris backed into Polley Lake. It indicates the main slurry flowed down Hazeltine Creek to reach Quesnel Lake, where the slurry and a large debris pile appeared to be stationary at that time.

Originally about four feet wide, Hazleton Creek now spans about 150 feet across as it gushed through this area in the Central Cariboo, creating a loud roar, and according to witnesses, leaving an acrid smell in its wake. This alert will remain in place until current test results are completed and further information is available. The CRD’s emergency operations centre (EOC) notes that neither the City of Quesnel

water nor the City of Williams Lake water are impacted. For up-to-date information, visit the EOC Facebook page at facebook.com/ CRDemergency operations, or the CRD website at cariboord.ca. Ladies get wet at 108 Along with their golf clubs, 108 Ladies Club members packed water guns and spray bottles for the July 30 round at the 108 Golf Resort. The water pistols were part of that week’s wine challenge – “Hydration fun” – and were welcome and refreshing with the heat of the day, says member Sharon Thompson. On the golf course, 28 ladies came out for the weekly round. Clare Koehn and Shelley Larson made birdies. Closest-to-the-pin strokes (KP), longest drives and longest putts were recorded. Carol Ohlund shot the KP on No. 6. Shannon Knapp shot closest on No. 8. On No. 4, Millie Halcro got it closest. Longest drives came from the clubs of Judy Scarrow on No. 5, Ann Pinkney on No. 1, and Eileen King on No. 7. Annie McKave drained the longest putt on No. 2; Knapp sunk the longest putt on No. 3; and on No. 1, King dropped the longest shot with her putter. Cathy Waite dropped the longest putt on No. 9; Leslie Bell did it on No. 5; and Angie Wahnschaff dropped the longest putt on No. 7. The 108 Ladies Club heads into an inter-club match in Williams Lake on Aug. 11. Golf clubs from Quesnel, 108 Mile and Williams Lake are in the mix, having played two rounds against each other to date for points this summer. 108 Mile is in first place with 919 points. Second place is Quesnel with 938 points and Williams Lake is in third with 945.

Flowering Rush pretty, but invasive

Flowering Rush is an aquatic ornamental that was introduced to North America from Eurasia in the 1800s. Also referred to as lilly grass or water gladiolus, flowering rush is appealing to the eye with its tall elegant vegetation and delicate spray of pink flowers. Growing along shorelines and submersed in slow moving water, it is difficult to identify when not in bloom

because it resembles the common bulrush. Flowering rush has long pointed leaves that grow more that one metre in length and have a triangular cross section. Atop the tall stem is an umbrella shaped spray of pink flowers that have three petals, as well as three smaller petals, each with darker pink veins. It is a vegetative spreader, and produces seeds to help with its

of water. Because it can live in water or on land, it is capable of taking over wetlands and displacing all flora and fauna in riparian areas. Flowering rush takes reduces the ability for recreation, such as boating and swimming, as well as spawning ground for certain fish species. If you have this invasive plant growing on your water’s edge, or

distribution. This plant has fleshy rhizomatous roots that will fragment

and float in water currents and can grow in as much as three metres

submerged in the water, it is important to treat the infestation in manner that is not going to promote further growth or spread. It is best to remove flowering rush prior to it seeding. If you are pulling or clipping the plant, do not allow any plant material to return to the water as it will reestablish itself. Dispose of any plant material and seeds in a heavy

plastic bag and take to designated invasive plant bin at the 100 Mile House, Williams Lake, or Quesnel landfills. If you have any questions or concerns about flowering rush or need some assistance in identification or management, contact the Cariboo Regional District’s invasive plant management team at 250-392-3351, or toll free at 1-800-665-1636, or visit cariboord.ca.
