A pair of Sidney residents are very happy with the response they received when they asked council for a new pedestrian-controlled crossing at Henry Avenue and Seventh Street. The municipality will be putting it in this month and it’s expected to be operating by September. The plans are to install pedestrian crossing signs, new curbs and a button-operated flashing light. Helen Martin, a resident of Amica on Beechwood, an independent living facility not far from the intersection, led an effort to get 300 names on a petition calling for the improvement. She brought that petition to council on July 14. “I am grateful to Sidney,” said Martin, who is legally blind. “They really did act quickly.” Martin added she has lived in Sidney for only a year after moving here from Esquimalt. She said she felt it was important to ask for a pedestriancontrolled light at Henry and Seventh because of its proximity to many senior facilities, as well as Sidney Elementary School. She also took action after hearing the story of Jacquie Kidd, whose mother was struck by a car and killed in an intersection near the school two years ago. Kidd said she didn’t think of petitioning for safer crossings at that time, but back in May of this year when Martin approached her, she said she got behind the effort. Sidney Mayor Larry Cross said the pedestriancontrolled light and curb works will cost around $17,000. The money is in the budget and a grant will help offset the overall cost.

National cyber bullying case has local ties
CENTRAL SAANICH — A case that saw a man arrested in Ottawa for cyber bullying and harassment last week has ties to Central Saanich. In April of 2014, a resident of the municipality reported to the Central Saanich Police that someone had hacked their social media accounts. According to police, the suspect altered the victim’s profile to include extremely hateful and racist remarks. Investigators quickly learned the local incident was part of a bigger investigation that was being conducted in Ontario and last week the Ottawa Police Service arrested 42-year-old Robert Campbell of Ottawa and charged him with 181 counts related to cyber bullying and harassment of 38 individuals across Canada, the US and the UK. “Although not an everyday occurrence in Central Saanich, it is not uncommon for us to work collaboratively with other police agencies regionally, Provincially and Nationally to address problems in our community,” said a press release from Central Saanich Police. “Cyber bullying and harassing people over the internet is a serious offence,” said Insp. Carl Cartright with the Ottawa Police Service. “Individuals who engage in this behaviour will be charged criminally by police. We urge victims to come forward and report this crime.” — News staff

Local Air Cadets honoured SIDNEY — Three air cadets from 676 Kittyhawk Squadron in Sidney received awards for their achievements on their first cadet summer training course recently. Jeremy Burton and Kaiko McCaig each received a Top Cadet Award, and Jack Ford received a Most Improved Cadet award. One Top Cadet and One Most Improved Cadet award are presented to deserving cadets within each of the six Flights (class). Each Flight is typically comprised of approximately 25 air cadets. “I am very proud of all our cadets,” said Maj. Allan Thompson, Commanding Officer of 676 Squadron. “We received outstanding support from our parents and community last year, which allowed us to send wellprepared and confident cadets on their first cadet course.” The three Sidney teens — with 144 other cadets from 24 communities throughout B.C. — graduated last Fri-
day from the two-week introductory General Training Course (GTC). For most of the cadets in attendance, the training course was their first time away from home. Over the past two weeks, these cadets — the majority between 12 and 13 years of age — completed a busy program that included sports, citizenship activities and flying opportunities. The General Training Course aims to expose cadets to as many different training opportunities as possible to help them plan their future goals in the Cadet Program. There were nine cadets from 676 Squadron on this General Training Course, which ran from July 21 to Aug 1. Around 10 cadets from 676 Kittyhawk Squadron will be in attendance at the final graduation ceremonies on Thursday, Aug 14 and Friday, Aug 15.

OUR VIEW
Rankin asking tough questions Victoria MP Murray Rankin and his New Democrat colleagues are pressing for an unusual summer meeting of a parliamentary committee to clear the air over the auditing of charities for their political activities. Rankin says there are too many allegations that the audits are being used to silence opponents of the Harper government. Since the spring of 2012, the Canada Revenue Agency has launched 52 audits of charities for their political activities, after the government ordered the special probe and eventually provided some $13.4 million for the initiative. The first wave of audits in 2012-2013 targeted environmental groups who have opposed the government’s energy and pipeline policies, but Many of the the initiative has since expanded to cover other groups say groups who fight poverty, the audits provide international aid and promote human have caused an “advocacy rights. Many of the groups say chill.” the audits have caused an “advocacy chill,” preventing them from speaking out for fear of aggravating the auditors and potentially losing their coveted charitable status. Canada’s charities are permitted to devote up to 10 per cent of their resources to political activities The Canada Revenue Agency refuses to provide the names of the groups being audited, citing confidentiality provisions of the Income Tax Act. Of course, Rankin could very well be chasing this issue as part of the NDP’s political agenda. But there is a bigger question here on government transparency. Government likes to talk about transparency and opening the books, but in reality it remains a closed shop. Rankin is at least trying to bring us better government by attempting to get questions answered. It will be interesting to see if the Conservatives are ready to answer. What do you think? Using the term ‘dear’ just fine by definition Re: Don’t use the annoying moniker ‘dear’, PNR, July 25. Dear editor. Funk & Wagnalls Standard College Dictionary defines ‘dear’ as beloved; precious, highly esteemed and used in letter salutations. Use of the term by waitresses, cashiers and tradespeople has no reference to how you raised your children, how you risked your life in the war, how you built this country, or how old you are. If you are offended by it and take it as a sign of disrespect you do have a problem, however it has nothing to do with people who are trying to help you. You might consider resolving the problem by having some respect for the people who are offering you assistance. Evelyn Fox Sidney
Canadians learning effects of majority government The Conservatives “Fair Election Bill” has been sent to the Senate. Canadians will find out if the Senate is a place of “second sober thought” or an extension of the sitting government. For Canadians following the details of the “Fair Elections Act” and heard a wide spectrum of experts, academics, opposition parties and Canadians weigh in on the problems with this bill. It leaves me wondering if the

Harper Government intentionally created the robo calling irregularities in the last election to give them the opportunity to introduce this “fair elections bill” to give them the edge to win the next election. Canadians are learning first-hand the effects a “majority” government has on our daily lives. We are standing witness to sweeping, hasty changes through legislature without debate, without the voices of citizens who cast their vote to the Liberal, NDP or Green parties. Many Canadian core values are left out when opposition leaders are ignored. They are the voices of Canadians who voted for them. How many Canadians who value democracy take the time to write the Federal Government and receive no response? I have written to the Conservative Government and receive the same response that news reporters get – no one is available. If this is what “democracy” means to the Conservatives than this is one Canadian who wants no part of it. I hope I never see another majority government in my life time. I see now that “power” corrupts! Jo-Anne Berezanski North Saanich

Indigenous peoples speak of Mother Earth. For them, there is recognition on their part that they are of Mother Earth and are interconnected with each other and rest of the universe. Modern man seems to have lost this sense of interconnectedness and interdependence with each other and the habitants of the planet. As a result, modern man treats each other, other living creatures and resources of this earth as objects to be used for personal benefit. Modern man began years ago and continues to this day, the pollution of air, water, soil, the violation and devastation of the many creatures and non-renewable resources of the planet for economic and financial gain or greed, for political advantage namely power and for technological and scientific improvements namely national pride. Oil sands love/hate relationship H
aving spent seven years in my early career as an on-site executive of Great Canadian Oil Sands (now Suncor) – Canada’s pioneer developer and first successful extractor of oil from this massive allCanadian resource - I feel compelled to comment on the increasing tendency by many to criticize this economic crown jewel. Not one Canadian province, nor individual citizen, fails to benefit from the existence of our Oil Sands industry. According to the Canadian Energy Research Institute (CERI), this sector currently accounts for 75,000 direct jobs across Canada; this number is expected to grow to 900,000 over the next 25 years. Canada’s Oil Sands are recognized today as the world’s thirdlargest proven crude oil reserve, after Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. Our Oil Sands produce almost 2 million barrels of crude oil every day; this is forecast to double in the next 15 years. Oil sands producers already deliver about 50% of Canada’s total oil production. Without it, instead of exporting oil, Canada would need to be a major importer of oil - at huge cost to Canada’s economy, and thus, to every citizen. Few critics of our Oil Sands seem aware that Alberta, from this rich natural resource, contributes almost 20 billion dollars annually to federal coffers, more than it benefits from federal spending. Without this resource, every Canadian’s standard of living would be negatively affected; income taxes would be higher, and services more constrained.

Financial Savvy Recent vacillation by the U.S. in approv-

– much of it resulting in negative, and often poorly-informed, commentary. Through the 1970s and 80’s, G.C.O.S., as the Oil Sands pioneer, struggled valiantly, at heavy financial cost, to perfect its oil sand extraction technology. Continued on page 8

In that spirit, we have created a space both current and comfortable: mindful of the past and the historical setting but with an eye toward the future showcasing an innovative menu. Monster ice cream hits summer advertising There’s a sight for a sore eyes on these very hot summer days – a monster ice cream truck.
The almost six-metre high truck was featured in an award winning series of TV ads in Europe for the new
Skoda Octavia vRS model. It proved so popular with viewers that the Czech manufacturers toured the
UK serving free ice cream to all comers. keith.morgan @drivewaybc.ca

Black Press is working with the Salmon Farmers Association of B.C. and Truffles Catering to put on a salmon barbecue to raise funds for a pair of worthy causes during the Vancouver Island Motor Gathering. The German Auto Import Network hosts the 2014 Vancouver Island Motor Gathering on Aug. 17 with funds raised supporting the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Vancouver Island and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. For many years, under many different names, this car show was held on the grounds of the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health. This year, the show has moved to a new
location with its new hosts, the German Auto Import Network. The event promises a day of family fun and an exciting lineup of cars and motorcycles. There will be a great selection of food court favourites, entertainment, pedal cars, remote controlled cars, a bouncy castle and more. The Vancouver Island Motor Gathering is Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Viscount Aero Centre, 9800 McDonald Park Rd. in Sidney. Visit motorgathering.com to learn more and register. Pre-registration closes on Aug. 13 at 5 p.m. Cost is $25 for vehicle entry, $2 for spectators.

Hearing Aids and Bluetooth
Many hearing aid users have heard about “Bluetooth” technology and want to learn more about how it works and whether it may be useful to improve their hearing in certain listening situations. Bluetooth is a standard for short-range wireless communication between electronic devices. Many models of hearing aids can wirelessly receive an audio signal from any Bluetooth-compatible device. This often involves the hearing aid user wearing a streamer device around their neck that acts as a go-between, connecting a Bluetooth device (examples include: cell phones, home phones, remote microphones, and TV audio transmitters) to their hearing aids. Most cell phones currently available have Bluetooth. When hearing aids are programmed to receive a Bluetooth signal from their cell phone, users can carry on a conversation while hearing the other person’s voice right through their hearing aids. In fact with Bluetooth, the user can typically talk “hands-free”, leaving their cell phone in their pocket or purse while carrying on a conversation directly through their hearing aids and possibly a streaming device worn around the neck. The same can be done with many newer home phones that are Bluetooth compatible. A remote microphone allows a hearing aid user to clip a small Bluetooth microphone onto the collar of their conversational partner, sending their voice directly to their hearing aids. This can be especially useful in restaurants or in a car, with one conversational partner. One of the most popular uses of Bluetooth is a TV transmitter, which allows the hearing aid user to hear the television through their hearing aids, while everyone else in the room can listen to the TV at their own preferred listening volume. For people with hearing loss that want to enhance their hearing using wireless technology, Bluetooth can be extremely helpful in many difficult listening situations.

“We’ll Get You Going!”
Beacon Community Services appoints new CEO Bob Boulter named as new Chief Executive Officer of local charity SIDNEY — Beacon Community Services’ Board of Directors announced the appointment of Robert (Bob) Boulter as Chief Executive Officer this week. Previously the local charity’s Vice President of Finance, Boulter had served in the CEO position on an acting basis since former CEO Isobel Mackenzie was appointed B.C.’s first seniors advocate in March.
“[Bob] has a clear vision of Beacon’s role in helping people and improving lives in our community.” – Keith Rolfe “We conducted a comprehensive and thorough evaluation process and it was obvious that Bob’s skill set and knowledge will serve Beacon well,” said Board Chair Keith Rolfe.
“He has a clear vision of Beacon’s role in helping people and improving lives in our community. And he has the financial acumen and administrative experience needed to deliver on that vision.” A chartered accountant who holds a degree in business administration from the University of Regina, Boulter has held senior finance positions with several large natural resource companies as well as Victoria’s Carmanah Technologies. As Beacon Community Services’ Vice President of Finance since January 2010, he oversaw the modernization of technology to aid in the charity’s service delivery. He was also instrumental in successful contract bids for Beacon to deliver a variety of community assistance, including in the fields of employment services and home support. “Beacon has a really solid foundation and a history of strong service to the community,”
Mackenzie traveling the province in new role Isobel Mackenzie, named B.C.’s first seniors advocate in March after serving as Beacon Community Services’ CEO, has been busy traveling the province connecting with seniors in their communities. As the B.C. Seniors Advocate, Mackenzie said it’s her job to listen to people, their families, caregivers and more about the issues facing seniors. “This office is not a single-issue panel but a permanent position and we’ll have to develop a plan on how to tackle the issues one at a time,” she explained. “[We are taking] the summer to assess the impacts of what we’ve heard and what issue we are going to tackle first.” The advocate is tasked with preparing reports to government and the public about immediate or long-term concerns facing seniors in the province. While her recommendations are not binding, they are made public and can have an impact on provincial policy. Mackenzie said people have been grateful that her office has been created and noted it’s a long-term commitment to help address issues in the province. “People are expecting I will be able to give voice to their concerns, making them public and reaching the government as well.” Boulter said. “I want to build on that with our volunteers, staff and community partners – to make sure we dedicate our resources to helping people where and when they need, as effectively and compassionately as possible.” Established on the Saanich Peninsula in 1974, Beacon Community Services has
evolved to become one of B.C.’s largest not-forprofit social services organizations. More than 1,200 staff and over 500 volunteers operate seven thrift shops and serve more than 6,000 clients across the Capital Regional District, including through programs and services in Child, Youth and Family Services, Counsel-
ling and Mental Health Services, Employment and Training Programs, Housing, Adult/Senior’s Recreation Services, Volunteer Services and Home Support Care. For more information on Beacon Community Services visit www.beaconcs.ca. — Submitted by Beacon Community Services

SENIORS IN FOCUS
Pen Track Masters harvest gold By Danny Daniels Contributor
At the recent Washington State Seniors Games, Peninsula Track’s Anne Murfitt and Les East both added to their 2014 haul of Masters medals by bringing a hatful back to Canada. Murfitt, competing in the womens 50 to 54 age group, copped a gold medal for her 16.65m Javelin throw and added two silvers with her PB of 7.79m in the Shot event and a 21.72m Hammer Throw. For good measure, she also took bronze with her 6.76m Weight Throw heave. East (M75-79) snared three gold medals, the first coming when he set a new Games Meet Record, and also a season’s best, by clearing 1.21m in the High Jump contest. His 31.50m hurl in the Hammer Throw and his Weight Toss effort on 12.01m gained his other two gold medallions. Added to his total were bronze medals in the Discus (30.02m) and Shot, with a PB of

9.27m. By achieving these top three results, Murfitt and East not only brought home a haul of medals but they also qualified to compete in next year’s U.S. National Seniors Games event in Bloomington, Minnesota. The two athletes will also take off to the 2015 World Masters Championships in Lyon, France, later that month.

Downsizing a home after decades
The Peninsula News Review is looking to help tell your stories about buying and selling a home. HomeFinder is going local and staff are collecting story ideas for this page. Whether you are a first-time home buyer or a senior hunting for an independent living condo, contact us to share your story. It just might help someone else going through one of the biggest events of their lives. You can call editor Steven Heywood at 250-656-1151 or email editor@ peninsulanews review.com.
A few phone calls can soothe a daunting task Angela Cowan News staff
Moving is a stressful experience at the best of times, and downsizing after living in the same house for decades can seem like an insurmountable task. But with a few phone calls and a bit of effort, the process can be relatively pain-free. “The first call should be to a realtor who specializes in (the neighbourhood) and specializes in downsizing,” says Cassie Kangas, an agent with DFH Real Estate. Kangas has been selling homes in the Capital Region for eight years, and says the general rule of moving every seven years doesn’t apply here. A lot of people live in their homes for decades in retirement-rich Saanich, which can lead to a build-up of a lot of clutter when it comes time to make a move. It’s important that no surprises crop up when the house goes on the market, Kangas says. “I definitely recommend doing a pre-inspection,” she

Moving into a smaller place forces homeowners to declutter while selecting only essential furniture pieces. says. Dealing with old oil tanks in the yard is always a worry, and anything that would make the house unliveable – like a roof in need of replacement – can be identified this way, but renovations aren’t always necessary. “It’s usually not worth putting any money into the house, unless it’s something that needs to be done that would impede the sale of

the home,” she says. “It’s more realistic to just price the home where it needs to be, reflecting any work it might need.” Tearing out walls or replacing the kitchen might be a bit much, but a coat of paint and a professional’s eye can do wonders to interested buyers, says Brenda Russell, realtor with Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty. Russell has been
licensed for 24 years, and has seen what a little bit of staging can do. “Doing a colour consultation or even just changing a few pieces of furniture around…I always encourage even an hour’s consultation,” she says. “It doesn’t cost very much, and then you’ve got a ‘wow’ experience.” Russell says that while professional help can be
invaluable, every house is unique and no house is going to be perfect. Both Kangas and Russell agree that the important thing is to take the process one step at a time, and not be afraid to call if help is needed. “It’s about gently getting started, and gently working through the process,” says Kangas. editor@saanichnews.com

NEWS REVIEW
HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.
