Suspicious fires spark arson investigations Officials launch probe into eight separate fires in two-day span Drew McLachlan News staff
A house fire on Speed Avenue early Tuesday morning marked Victoria’s fifth fire over the long weekend, in addition to three in Esquimalt. The fire caused significant damage to an abandoned house on 607 Speed Ave., starting on the back deck before spreading to the house and detached garage. The other fires all took place early Monday morning, and included a grass fire in Vic West, an occupied residency and the interior of an abandoned building both on Prior Street and a detached shed outside a home on Topaz Avenue. When the fires occurred, Victoria
Police Department was already carrying out investigations for a string of suspicious fires set between April 25 and May 19. While fire prevention officer Megan Sabell said it was too early to confirm a connection between the fires, the and location makes it possible that the same individual or individuals may be responsible. The Victoria Fire Department has seen a sharp rise in the amount of fires this year, 46 so far, compared to a total of 30 in 2013. Of those 46, VicPD is investigating 30 of them as suspicious. Several of these fires have taken place in abandoned buildings. “Historically, we haven’t had a lot of fires in vacant buildings, but this year we have,” Sabell said. “We’re not sure if they’re being tar8' 10' coming 12' geted or if people are just across them, thinking it may be good practice.” PLEASE SEE: Abandoned buildings, Page A18

Gorging Dragons take on the world Victoria dragon boat team qualifies for international championship meet in Ravena, Italy Drew McLachlan News staff
Dragon boats competitors will hit the Inner Harbour next weekend for the annual Victoria Dragon Boat Festival, and this year’s festival will be a key stepping stone for the Gorging Dragons internationally. For the third time in 20 years, Vancouver Island’s first dragon boat team will represent Canada at the International Dragon Boat Federation’s 9th Club Crew World Championships, in Ravena, Italy “Its been a long process,” said coach Tom Arnold, 39. “We qualified at the Canadian National championships last year, so between that and
Esquimalt man banned from owning animals Kevin Laird News staff
An Esquimalt man received a lifetime ban on owning animals following a BCSPCA animal cruelty investigation. Hubert Henry was charged with neglecting his female pit bull last summer. The one-year-old dog was tethered outdoors without access to adequate food, water or shelter until she was seized by SPCA special constables in May 2013. “Skylar is an amazing dog,” said SPCA Const. Lynsay Bailey. “She was living in the worst possible circumstances, but she is so resilient.” Bailey said the SPCA recommended the lifetime ban in the case because Henry was also found guilty of animal cruelty in 2009 for the neglect of two other pit bulls. The two dogs were seized by the SPCA.
Italy we’ve spent the last two years in training – right through the winter, three times a week as a team and a lot more solo training.” Arnold described his entry into dragon boating as fairly typical. Having grown up canoeing on lakes, he decided to try out dragon boating when the company he was working for in Toronto formed a corporate team. By the time he moved to Victoria, he felt he was ready to paddle competitively, and ended up with the Gorging Dragons. The team landed a spot in the 2004 Cape Town Internationals, becoming the first Vancouver Island team to compete, and medal, on an international level. “Nobody was more surprised than us,” Arnold said. “The entire team had worked up from a
recreational to a competitive level, and to be there with the best teams in the world – Germany, Russia – and to medal against them, it was amazing.” Despite the Gorging Dragons becoming an international force, the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival is still an annual highlight for Arnold. “Its all about finding those moments when everybody is perfectly insync,” Arnold said. “When it feels like the boat is lifting into the air, and you’re flying down the race course. It’s a hard feeling to match.” The Victoria Dragon Boat Festival takes place Aug. 15 to 17. The Gorging Dragons will compete before moving on to Ravinca, Italy for the Club Crew World Championships on Sept. 3. reporter@vicnews.com

Negotiators for school districts and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation are getting together today (Aug. 8) to seek a settlement in their long-running dispute before school starts up in September. A brief statement from the BCTF announced the resumption of talks Aug. 1, a day after the B.C. government announced a contingency plan to pay strike savings to parents of younger students if the strike keeps schools shut in September. The government saves an estimated $12 million a day
when teachers go without paycheques, enough to pay parents $40 per missed school day for each child under 13 in public school. Recreation centres are preparing to extend summer camp and activity programs into the fall. Finance Minister Mike de Jong announced the contingency plan after several weeks without movement in the long-running dispute that shut schools for the last two weeks of June. Education Minister Peter Fassbender has said the union’s demands are far beyond settlements with other public sector unions, particularly on benefit

Those include increases to preparation time, pregnancy and parental leave, extended health and dental and substitute teacher compensation. editor@vicnews.com

Capital Regional District directors meet once again Wednesday to discuss salvaging the region’s $788-million secondary sewage treatment project, but the “forced hiatus” provides a window for new ideas, said Saanich Coun. Vic Derman. Derman, who also sits as a director on the CRD’s core area liquid waste management committee, intends to put forward a notice of motion next week to ask for an overview of the latest technology and the feasibility of a distributed treatment model. “It might be appropriate to have an investigation led by a retired deputy minister or someone of similar status,” Derman said. The process wouldn’t need the time and expense of a full-scale Request for Proposals, but could still inform directors on “what’s out there,” Derman said. “We’re not going anywhere right now, and that’s pretty obvious,” he said. There’s been an attempt to resuscitate the old project, and for lack of a better term, buy off Esquimalt. I don’t think that will be successful,” Derman said. Only two smaller projects, the Craigflower pump station and a $760,000 design of an attenuation tank at Arbutus Road, are continuing as planned while the Seaterra program awaits direction on a way forward from CRD directors. During that wait, Derman said directors need a “sounding” of available sewage treatment technology to ensure they’re building the best plants for the right price. “We need an independent examination of the technology out there, the potential for architecture, what are examples elsewhere, and get enough information to figure out whether a distributed model is worth pursuing further or whether we stick with the direction we went, but without McLoughlin Point.,” he said. Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins is already involved in that process. Staff from West Shore communities, Esquimalt and the City of Victoria are currently working on terms of reference to move ahead on a distributed model study under the umbrella of the CRD, she said. The team had hoped to present those terms at Wednesday’s CRD meeting, but more work needs to be done. “Our technical staff believe we may be able to provide sewage treatment that not only meets regulatory standards and guidelines, but beats them by standard and by cost,” Desjardins said. The CRD is required by federal legislation to treat its sewage to a secondary or greater level by 2020, and the province has set a wastewater treatment deadline of 2018. editor@vicnews.com

Blue Dot Tour: It’s about all of us David Suzuki’s last national tour makes stop in Victoria David Suzuki Guest opinion
A now-famous 1972 photo of Earth taken by Apollo 17 astronauts from 45,000 kilometres away became known as “the blue marble.” The late scientist Carl Sagan described a 1990 picture taken from six billion kilometres away by the unmanned Voyager 1 as a “pale blue dot.” The vision of Earth from a distance has profoundly moved pretty much anyone who has ever seen it. “When we look down at the earth from space, we see this amazing, indescribably beautiful planet,” International Space Station astronaut Ron Garan said. “It looks like a living, breathing organism. But it also, at the same time, looks extremely fragile.” Referring to the atmosphere, Garan added “it’s really sobering … to realize that that little paperthin layer is all that protects every living thing on Earth.” Many astronauts report a deep feeling of connection that transcends borders and worldly conflict —referred to by some as
the “overview effect.” Apollo 14’s Edgar Mitchell said: “You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty.” How can anyone who has even seen a photo of the Earth treat our small blue home with disdain and carelessness? How can anyone fail to recognize how precious and finite the resources, especially water, are – and that we must share and care for what we have? The “blue marble” photo from Apollo 17, the last manned lunar mission, catalyzed the global environmental movement. Now, as people around the world compete for air, water and land – not just with each other, but with corporations bent on profit at any cost – we need a resurgence in action to care for our small blue planet. That’s why I’m about to embark on what will likely be my last national tour. From Sept. 24 to Nov. 9, I’m crossing the country, from St. John’s,
Newfoundland, to Victoria, B.C., with 20 stops along the way. The plan is to work with Canadians from all walks of life to protect the people and places we love. It’s the most important thing I’ve ever done. And it’s going to be fun. Because they care deeply about our country and the planet, many friends are joining me along the way, including Feist, Neil Young, the Barenaked Ladies, Margaret Atwood, Kinnie Starr, Raine Maida, Grimes, Danny Michel, Stephen Lewis, Bruce Cockburn, Robert Bateman, Shane Koyczan and many more. The goal of the Blue Dot Tour is to work with community leaders and groups, local governments, First Nations, musicians, writers, legal experts and – we hope – you on local, regional and national initiatives to ensure all Canadians have access to clean water, fresh air and healthy food. Ultimately, we’d like to see the right to a healthy environment enshrined in the Canadian
Constitution’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. That may seem like a challenge, but it’s not unusual. More than half the world’s nations – at least 110 – have environmental rights in their constitutions. Not having them is a strange oversight in a country like Canada, where our clean air and water, spectacular nature and abundant wildlife and resources instill a sense of pride and make us the envy of people around the world. Maybe we take our good fortune for granted. But we shouldn’t. Already, environmental hazards contribute to about 36,000 premature deaths in Canada a year, and half of us live in areas where we’re exposed to unsafe air pollution levels. As the rush to extract, transport and sell fossil fuels while there’s still a market heats up, it will only get worse — unless we all pitch in. It’s not about getting in the way of industry or progress; it’s about building a conversation about the kind of country we want. And it’s about ensuring that our economic activity creates more benefits than harm to people and the natural systems that keep us healthy and alive. Learn more at www. davidsuzuki.org.

Summer construction closes Esquimalt’s Fairview Road

Drew McLachlan News staff
Esquimalt is set for two road projects this month, including a full road closure on Fairview Road from Aug. 11 to Sept. 19. The Fairview Road project is sparked by “poor conditions of infrastructure” along the roadway. Improvements include a new sidewalk along the eastern side of the road, new drains and manhole upgrades, new railway tracks and road markings and line painting. The road closure will affect all directions of the intersection at Fairview Road and Devonshire Road. Joffre Street will also see minor upgrades as road crews replace the sidewalk on the western side of the street, from 546 Joffre St. to Lyall Street. The project is slated to begin in early August and expected to take four to six weeks to complete, as water meters will need to be relocated prior to construction. A full road closure map of the Fairview Road project is available online at Esquimalt.ca. Any residents or businesses affected by construction will be notified by the contractor prior to commencement. reporter@vicnews.com

Transparency goes both ways
Victoria MP Murray Rankin and his New Democrat colleagues are pressing for an unusual summer meeting of a parliamentary committee to clear the air over the auditing of charities for their political activities. Rankin says there are too many allegations that the audits are being used to silence opponents of the Harper government. Since the spring of 2012, the Canada Revenue Agency has launched 52 audits of charities for their political activities, after the government ordered the special probe and eventually provided some $13.4 million for the initiative. The first wave of audits in 2012-2013 targeted environmental groups who have opposed the government’s energy and pipeline policies, but the initiative has since expanded to cover other groups who fight poverty, provide international aid and promote human rights. Many of the groups say the audits have caused an “advocacy chill,” preventing them from speaking out for fear of aggravating the auditors and potentially losing their coveted charitable status. Canada’s charities are permitted to devote up to 10 per cent of their resources to political activities The Canada Revenue Agency refuses to provide the names of the groups being audited, citing confidentiality provisions of the Income Tax Act. Of course, Rankin could very well be chasing this issue as part of the NDP’s political agenda. But there is a bigger question here on government transparency. Government likes to talk about transparency and opening the books, but in reality it remains a closed shop. Rankin is at least trying to bring us better government by attempting to get questions answered. It will be interesting to see if the Conservatives are ready to answer.

Smoke-free air is our right No one ever has the right to endanger the health of others by their habits. Smokers must realize the secondhand smoke they emit causes others to have health problems. That can mean children, friends and anyone they defile the air around. Smoking is the one vice that negatively affects everyone else so that smokers can get thier fix. We have to control drinking and driving so that the impaired cannot kill anyone on the road. A smoker’s weapon may not be immediate, but those around him will suffer, and cannot breath clean air as long as they exhale. Smoking in multi-family dwellings needs to be banned, as well, and also, smoking in a car with the windows down in rush hour traffic. We eliminated asbestos and lead pipe, still legal for sale, but not for breathing by Canadian citizens. Just because something is legal does not mean it is harmless. The statistics clearly show that careless smoking causes house and apartment fires, forest fires, and is dangerous to the public, not to mention loss of work time (smoke breaks), the litter, loss of

revenue from sale of property, and the burden on the health-care system. Thank you, Capital Regional District, for working to help Victorians with their right to breathe clean air a major right of smokers and non-smokers alike. Molly Walker Victoria
Regional amalgamation: devil is in the details Re: Residents favour amalgamation (News, Aug. 1). I suspect the vision of amalgamation supported by residents consists of replacing (for example) 13 chiefs of police each paid roughly $200,000 per year with a single chief of police, paid the same $200,00 per year, yielding a 92 per cent cost savings. In fact, amalgamation is more likely to mean that we’d end up with 13 assistant chiefs of police, still paid $200,000 per year, plus a new supreme chief of police, paid at least $300,000 per year, yielding a 12 per cent cost increase. Amalgamation may enjoy widespread support but, as always, the devil is in the details. Robert Smith Victoria

we asked you:
Advice for government, teachers and parents Here is some free advice to the B.C. government, teachers and parents. B.C. government – You have the ability to end this debacle prior to September. Do it. Stop playing silly games and affect the lives of our children. Negotiate in good faith or legislate. Teachers – Don’t flex your muscles by going on strike in September. That is what the government wants, so they can point to you as the “bad guys” while saving a pot of money. Go back to work, keep on negotiating and tell the public everyday what is happening during the negotiations. Parents – Why have you not risen up in righteous indignation? Your children are being used as pawns in this dispute between the BCTF and the government. “Man the barricades” – picket MLA offices, government ministries, the premier’s office, the BCTF and write to the newspapers as some of you have done, showing your disgust. This whole thing has to be settled before September. B.C. has become the laughing stock across Canada. Roland Stieda Central Saanich

An Escalade worth the wait Cadillac recently held the introduction of its all-new Escalade in the heart of Toronto, specifically the heart of Yorkville. This upscale slice of Toronto real estate is home to spendy shops, exclusive restaurants and luxurious hotels. This is a place to be seen or be seen in a vehicle that projects the image one wants to portray. Media guests for the Escalade launch stayed at Toronto’s very first boutique hotel, The Hazelton. As one Torontonian put it, “that’s about the fanciest place in town.” It certainly draws an upscale crowd of rich people, or posers, looking the part. Shakespeare heads outside 50% OFF Christine van Reeuwyk News staff
The magical light of sunset amps up the magic of Shakespeare says actor Adrienne Smook. Smook, who shares her knowledge with students at the Canadian College of the Performing Arts, is among those performing during the 24th Greater Victoria Shakespeare Festival that features Henry V and The Taming of the Shrew until Aug. 16 on the grounds of Camosun College’s Lansdowne Campus. “It’s a beautiful venue. Experiencing these words out in nature is particularly affecting I think,” says Smook, who teaches at CCPA. “When you’re out there with the elements it makes it all the more real and exciting. There’s something about the little bit of breeze in your hair or little bit of rain.” The long shadows and shifting colours of sunset along with the evening breeze are something the actors enjoyed during rehearsals heading into the start of the festival last week. Smook portrays Kate in Taming of the Shrew and Fluellen in Henry V and works alongside two of her CCPA voice students, Alexa MacDougall and Ursina (Sina) Luther. “It’s exciting to watch them use the skills they’ve been developing at the school,” Smook said of the students entering third year. “It’s a new level of appreciation for what training does for performers. To have known these

Canadian College of the Performing Arts instructor Adrienne Smook and Alexa MacDougall perform in Henry V in Victoria as part of the Greater Victoria Shakespeare Festival. students in class and then seeing them in the context of rehearsal … it’s very rewarding and inspiring.” Henry V is about a new king determined to prove his right to rule a kingdom torn apart by strife. Insults from France lead Henry to make a rash decision to go to war. But his moving speeches, bravery and leadership lead his army to victory over the French, ending in his marriage to the Dauphine of France. The Taming of the Shrew is about a merchant with two daughters, one who is sweet and mildmannered, the other who is bad-tempered and cantankerous. Their suitors try everything to win their hearts, leading to false identities, secret weddings and hilarious fiascos. The festival’s acting company performs both plays
led by classically trained professional mentor actors – Smook and Julian Cervello. “We work with the director and artistic director to provide mentorship, education and professional formation for the rest of the cast, which includes acting students, community actors and two junior company members. The GVSF is a professional festival
with an educational commitment to its grassroots in Victoria’s budding talent,” said Smook, who trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Both festival plays are directed by longtime society associate and festival founder, Clayton Jevne. “As an instructor I work primarily with students. In this context we’re all
together as student, as professionals, (and) all exploring this work and then taking that work directly onto stage and into rehearsal performance,” Smook added. Tickets are available online at ticketrocket. org and at the festival. Tickets range from a $19 single play ticket to a $42 festival pass. “This is a festival for everyone,” said Karen Lee Pickett, artistic director. “Shakespeare’s works aren’t antiquated – they’re exciting, moving and engaging experiences, particularly in the open park setting of Camosun. Parents bring their children to our shows because they connect with the stories on stage.” Henry V runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday while The Taming of the Shrew is Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday until Aug. 16 at Camosun College’s Lansdowne Campus. Picnic dinners, musical performances and preshow presentations kick off most evenings. “I’m looking forward to sharing these stories with audiences,” Smook said.

Two vacant building fires from earlier this year, on 648 Herald St. in April and the corner of Cook and Empress streets in June, started from inside the buildings, which makes it possible that squatters were responsible. “We do get calls sometimes for squatters and campers doing open burning in parks and buildings,” Sabell said. Respond, a city-wide group made up of bylaw, police, and fire prevention officers as well as building and electrical inspectors, started tracking abandoned buildings earlier this year, out of concern over the rising number of fires in these buildings. City bylaws also state that the owner of a

vacant building must keep it free of any debris or combustible waste, and ensure that all openings are securely fastened in order to prevent entry. Sabell warns residents to be vigilant if they live near an abandoned building. “Leave your outside light on at night, don’t leave combustibles outside and don’t take the recycling out until its time for it to be picked up,” she said. “If somebody is looking to start a fire they’ll use whatever materials are available.” VicPD is also looking for information to assist their investigations, particularly in identifying a grey SUV spotted near the site of the fire on the 1200-block of Lockley Street. VicPD is asking anyone with information to call their non-emergency line at 250-995-7654. reporter@vicnews.com
HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.
“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Open Space adding new art to Commercial Alley Drew McLachlan News staff
Open Space, Victoria’s artist-run exhibition and performance centre, has partnered with the city to add some colour to Commercial Alley. A series of paintings by street artist Troy Lovegates, also known as Other, were put on display in June. Lovegates’ work was chosen to work in conjunction with Open Space’s Reclaim the Streets symposium, an examination of Victoria’s urban art. Lovegates’ work will
be removed on Aug. 13 to make way for Commercial Alley’s second exhibition by local artist and poet Roy Green. Titled Bird Quartet, the series of paintings flings some of Vancouver Island’s indigenous avians, such as the blue heron, the pileated woodpecker and the rufous hummingbird into semi-human form in an attempt to explore humanity’s fascination with the creatures. Open Space curatorial assistant Alexis Hogan said that Green was chosen to be the second featured art-
ist because of the relevance his subjects hold for Vancouver Island and the contrast his work provides to Lovegates’. “When we saw examples of (Green’s) work, we were effortlessly able to envision his four portraits enlivening the space,” Hogan said. “We felt he would be an interesting and inspirational bridge for the community.” Green himself said that a public venue like Commercial Alley is the ideal place for his series. “It’s meant for the
public, to catch them by surprise,” he said. “I’m hoping it will be an unexpected visual treat for people who may not even know there’s art on display in the alley.” Bird Quartet will be unveiled as part of the Integrate Arts Festival on Aug. 15 in Commercial Alley, located between Yates Street and Bastion Square, and displayed until Jan. 15. Open Space hopes to continue their partnership with the city and have a third exhibition replace Bird Quartet following its removal.

Care providers gear for September strike Provision of care in schools could get dicey if no deal reached with teachers Angela Cowan News Staff
As August marches on with sunshine and heat, parents would normally be starting to eye back-to-school sales and new backpacks. Unless serious progress is made on the B.C. teachers’ dispute with the province, and soon, students’ summer holidays may be extended a lot further than expected. “Lots of people I’ve talked to have already said they’re anticipating the teachers won’t be back until October,” said Lucy-Ann Smith, owner and operator of Happy Campers Childcare. Happy Campers has 12 centres all through Greater Victoria and takes care of 450 to 500 children each day. Most out-of-school care centres will continue with what they call “strike camps,” said Smith, something they started in June when the teachers’ strike first took effect. Strike camps offer full-day care for parents who have to work and although the government has promised to subsidize parents with $40 per day for each child under-13 to help cover the extra costs, the allowance isn’t going to fix all the headaches parents have been dealing with. A lot of care centres hire university students for the summer’s influx of kids, said Smith, and come September, they all go back to school. Centres could be left

Some care facilities working with school-aged children will be offering all-day “strike camps” if the teachers’ strike is not resolved by September. short-staffed and ill-equipped to handle the higher demands for care. That’s the case with the View Royal Out of School Care Society, said operations manager Leeann Lindberg. “Most of our staff are university students,” she said. “It’s a matter of seeing if we have enough staff.” Lindberg said they’re in a particularly sticky situation, because even though they’re not attached to View Royal elementary, the care centre and pre-school is still on the school grounds. “If the union doesn’t picket the parking lot, then we’re able to stay open,” said Lind-

berg. But even though the union has been “really good” about letting the centre stay open, the centre still rents a classroom from the school that would be off-limits should the strike continue. “It’s going to limit the number of children that can attend with us,” Lindberg said. From staffing challenges and extra costs to scheduling full-day care, to the potential for lost income and the disruption to students, parents and care centres have been hit hard by the teachers’ strike. And if the rumour mill is true, come September, there may still be a ways to go. acowan@goldstreamgazette.com

Ask the Expert
Balancing business/family: Q&A
Vote
Q
How do you find time for “you” outside of being a “mom”?
A
It’s definitely challenging, especially since I’ve gone back to work full-time. I have a supportive husband who is a very hands-on dad and we are lucky to be surrounded by family who love to spend time with our girls, which gives us a break.
A:
Q
What are you reading right now? What kinds of books do you like to read with your children?
A
I wish I had more time to read, but it takes me awhile to get through a book these days. I just finished Water for Elephants and am looking forward to reading the final book in Ken Follett’s Trilogy Series, Edge of Eternity. My youngest daughter won’t sit still for a whole book yet, but my oldest loves Dr. Seuss and Robert Munsch. We also make the library a part of our regular routine, which means we always have new books to read. Current favourites are Owl Babies and The Deep Deep Puddle.
Q What is your favourite family activity to
share together?
next Family September 12
A We love being active as a family, doing
things like swimming and skating and we really enjoy being outdoors - hiking, playing at the park or going to the beach. I would have to say our favourite activity is walks around our neighbourhood. It’s truly amazing how children can turn the most ordinary places into a grand adventure.
Q
The part of your day you look forward to the most?
A
I love watching my kids play at daycare at the end of the day before they realize I’m there, and then of course their reactions when they do see me are amazing and can melt away even the worst day at the office.

My Mom is scheduled to have hip surgery and her Doctor has indicated she will be discharged after 4 or 5 days if all goes well. She is expecting that I will look after her at home but I have no experience with this sort of care. What can I do to get the best care for my Mom? Looking after a parent or loved one after a surgery can be a daunting undertaking. Many retirement communities have respite care for just this situation. • The post-surgery care and rehabilitation would be coordinated by trained staff. • Staff will assist your Mom with daily activities such as bathroom routines, showering, escort to meals, recreation activities and prescribed exercises. • 24/7 personal assistance provides peace of mind for the recovering person and the family. • Costs generally include a furnished room, meals, staffing and all services (telephone, TV, utilities) except medication. • Social contact with other residents is therapeutic and goes a long way towards a speedy recovery. • It is recommended that you begin to research respite options well before a surgery date is set. • A minimum stay is required at some retirement communities. On the Road: Travels obviously jinxed by Dad For most of the “little” years, my girls and I spent summers on the swim meet circuit, chugging up and down Vancouver Island and on the Lower Mainland in our bright orange ’78 Volkswagen. Since Dad worked weekends, it fell to me to load up the VW and navigate our way through cities and towns and back roads, take shortcuts and not-so-short-cuts, dodge traffic jams, find Susan campsites and swimming pools. I became capable. But it all fell apart the day we left our home on Salt Spring Island to cover a protest at the legislature for the local newspaper. Usually, our travels included just us females. But this time Dad joined us, apparently throwing a wrench into my capability. The day started with a lift in his eyebrows as I hopped into the driver’s seat. He mumbled something about my driving making him sick, but I waved him off, breezily indicating that of course I’d drive. Things were going well, despite being one of the last cars to disembark from the ferry. We were zooming down the highway, the girls and I chattering away, when, to my right, Dad grunted and tried to interrupt. “Photo radar,” he snapped when

he could get a word in. Naturally, he assumed I was speeding. “No problem,” I said, shrugging nonchalantly. But I sneaked a look at the speedometer and wondered how I could deter him from collecting the mail for the next six weeks. “Now that is a real car,” I announced a few minutes later as we arrived at a red light next to a Porsche. “But,” I said, thinking out loud, “I bet I can beat him Lundy up the hill.” I balanced my feet on the clutch and gas, looking between the Porsche and the light. Then – blast off. I whizzed through the gear changes as the Porsche meandered behind us. Then the driver realized what I was doing, gave a little grin and lurched forward, disappearing into the horizon. The backseat cheering stopped. “Does she do this all the time?” Dad complained. Our first stop was a mall (Dad had purchases to make). As we got out of the car, I reached for my purse … which wasn’t there. Okay, so I left it on the ferry. “No problem,” I said, countering his withering look with an expression that said: “This sort of thing happens all the time and I’m perfectly capable of handling it.”

I picked up his cell phone (the days before we each had a phone) and after some difficulty, I managed to connect with a person at B.C. Ferries, discovering, yes, my purse had been found. (I told you so.) Shopping for “him” now on hold for lack of credit card, we loaded back into the car. I threw the cell phone onto the dash, rolled down all the windows and roared off toward the legislature. Then came a sharp, right-hand turn onto Blanshard just as the light changed and a city-blockfull of cars came at us. Horrified, I watched the cell phone slide across the dash and fly into the path of oncoming steel and rubber. Dad leapt like Superman from the car and managed to guide traffic around the phone, until the very last truck rolled by and crushed it like a bug into the asphalt. “It’s not mom’s fault!” chimed my cheering section from the back seat. “It was that damn truck,” I agreed meekly. The rest of the trip occurred without too much incident, although I mistakenly thought I’d locked the keys in the car. (I didn’t mention this to anyone; at that point I would have broken a window and feigned a robbery to get at those keys.) The next weekend, the girls and I were back in the van, puttering off to a swim meet, with – I swear – my capability fully restored.

It’s no secret Victoria’s population is one of the oldest in Canada. With 115,735 residents over the age of 55, just over a third of the population, Greater Victoria has the third highest elderly population in the country, just behind Peterborough, Ont. and Kelowna, according to the 2011 census. With that in mind, it should be no surprise that the city is also home to more than a few senior real estate specialists (SRES). SRES is an official designation created in 2007 and granted by the National Association of Realtors to members of the Canadian Real Estate Association upon completion of the respective course. Chris Kirby, an SRES at Slegg Realty, said that there are several factors that put Victoria at the top of the list for many seniors, retirees in particular. “The biggest pull is the climate,” Kirby said. “Winter can be really challenging,

especially as you get older. A lot of people from other provinces start looking at Victoria once they retire, because they don’t have to worry about icy roads. The fact that you can golf all year here is a huge draw as well.” Kirby said Victoria is a popular spot to retire even for people from Vancouver, due to the lower cost of living, especially for those looking to spend their golden years in a home by the sea. Just like the needs of older residents, the services provided by agerestricted condominiums can vary greatly, with some providing dinners for residents or even daily checkins by staff. Andy Stephenson, a SRES with Sotheby’s Realty, said that accessibility is important for realtors to take account when working with older clients. “Not all seniors are internet savvy, some are hard of hearing and their sight is not always good,” Stephenson said. “Small things, like using larger font in paperwork,

can be helpful, and you can’t expect to send PDF documents over email and have the client print them off.” When trying to reach an older demographic, many realtors rely on print advertisements, particularly in magazines that specialize in “senior living,” though many SRES also cater to the general market. However, Kirby said that an increasing
amount of seniors are now using Facebook, and having the ability to buy ads on the website that only appear on the screens of users over the age of 55, has helped him get his name out to potential clients. While the Victoria real estate market has no shortage of homes, or realtors, suitable for seniors, Kirby said that a new home isn’t
always the best option. “The first thing I look at is what the difficulty with the current home is, and if there’s anything that can be done to improve it,” he said. “Sometimes there’s an easy fix, and a lot of people don’t know that its often tax-deductible. For some seniors, the thing they want most is to stay in their own home.” reporter@vicnews.com

Artist brush-ready for Bowker Creek Angela Cowan News Staff
Angela Cowan/News staff
Robert Amos holds up his sketched portrait of fellow artist Chief Tony Hunt at the TD Art Gallery Paint-In. Amos participates in Oak Bay’s Bowker Creek Brush Up this Sunday (Aug. 10). LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED FOR OVER 50 YEARS
After a long search, well-known Victoria artist Robert Amos finally found the perfect spot for a more relaxed lifestyle when he moved to Oak Bay two years ago and he couldn’t be happier. “It’s like moving to a different country,” he says. “It has what you need and you don’t have to leave.” A strong positive for someone with less and less desire to go downtown, he says. Amos, who has painted since he was a teenager, says he really began in earnest when he moved to Victoria, and since 1980, has been painting and drawing here full time. Amos recently painted the portraits of passersby at the TD Art Gallery Paint-In on Moss Street, something he’s been involved with since its inception in 1989. In its first year there were only 20 artists, says Amos. Since then, he’s watched it grow to the sprawling venue it is now, featuring 180 artists this year spread from just around the corner from Craigdarroch castle, along Moss Street to the seaside at Dallas Road. The continued growth of the paint-in doesn’t surprise him. “(Victoria) is a magnet for creative people,” he says. Next up, Amos will participe in the 10th annual Bowker Creek www.dfh.ca
Brush Up, something he’s enjoyed doing for the past several years. He says he’ll likely work in watercolour at the Brush Up, though attendees can take a gander through his published collection of books as well. The works span the histories of Victoria and Chinatown, an illustrated biography of Harold MortimerLamb and a photo-collage exploring local artists in their studios on southern Vancouver Island. “One of my great specialties is books,” he says. “Making, writing, painting, illustrating, photographing, putting them together. That’s how a lot of people actually know me, is through my books.” An invited guest for two years, Amos can attend the Brush Up as an official Oak Bay resident this year and looks forward to meeting with the public again. “I put my expressions out there a lot in words and pictures, and I really enjoy hearing what comes back. In particular, now that I live in Oak Bay, I’m feeling much more personal about the Brush Up.” The 10th annual Bowker Creek Brush Up is Sunday (Aug. 10), between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., showcasing 35 local artists, four guest artists and three youth artists practising their crafts in the open summer air. editor@vicnews.com

An Escalade worth the wait Cadillac recently held the introduction of its all-new Escalade in the heart of Toronto, specifically the heart of Yorkville. Original Mini Cooper makes a comeback
Keith Morgan
Y
et another version of the popular Mini is out and selling for around $120. What? – Well, it is a LEGO
brick replica of the original Cooper Mk VII, produced between August 1997 and July 1998. That was the last generation of the original very mini-Mini, which was
soon replaced by the Mini on steroids that BMW now produces very profitably. Interestingly, the price tag for the beautifully crafted “toy” is about the same as I
paid for my used 1966 Mini Countryman Mark II back in 1974. The LEGO version bears many authentic details, from the classic green and white
color scheme with white wing mirrors and racing stripes. When I got mine, it had authentic woodworm in the bits that made it look like a mini Brit version of the Woodies that were so popular on this side of the Atlantic at the time. Dad suggested we strip out the wood but the garage guy thought the whole darn thing might fall apart if we did. Oh, brother! My dad, as a model plane painter of some repute, bought a few cans of paint and carefully painted the wood black. Then he hand painted the rest of the body blue. Couldn’t see a brush stroke when he had finished. The model has doors, hood and trunk that open – more than you could say for mine on many occasions. Sporty fog lights are featured as well as a detailed four-cylinder engine – transversely mounted, of course. There’s also separate spare tire compartment. Had one of those to house a spare that was as bald as I am now.

You can even remove the roof to access a tan colored interior with patterned seats, veneer-style dashboard, turning steering wheel, and moving gearshift and handbrake. I had a hole in my roof at one point but the only thing that came through it was rain, by the bucketful. This Cooper model measures more than 11cm in height, stretches 25cm in length and is about 14cm wide. Dimensionally it doesn’t sound much smaller that my real live, constantly stalling machine. Mind you that’s what happens when
you aquaplane through gigantic duck pond-sized puddles on the narrow back lanes I travelled through the rural northwest of Lancashire on my way to journalism school. The set is part of the Creator Expert series and I must say the thought of putting together 1,077-parts is somewhat daunting. Perhaps no more so than my old banger after a breakdown. A girlfriend at the time always wondered why it would quit in the darkest back lanes. Which reminds me, the LEGO car accessories includes a picnic basket, bottle and blanket . . . I had a blanket in the back of mine but it wasn’t for picnic use. Ah, those fond memories will come flooding back if Santa does his job this year. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
