Third hottest July on record

It felt like a scorcher because it was a scorcher, according to Environment Canada statistics for Cranbrook and Kimberley SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff

Whether you spent the month of July cursing the sun or rejoicing in the natural sauna out your front door, it was clear that the summer had turned into a hot one. Just how hot, we know now, as Environment Canada meteorologist Andre Besson reports that the weather station at Canadian Rockies International Airport recorded July 2014 as the third hottest July on record. The daily average temperature for the month was 22 degrees Celsius. That places 2014 just behind July 1985, when the daily average was 22.2 degrees Celsius, and a further step behind the hottest July on record – 2007, when the daily average was 22.6 degrees Celsius. “It has been a fairly warm July,” said Besson. There was not much rain, either, he went on. “It has been fairly dry compared to normal.” But it was not one of the driest – not even in the top eight for dry Julys on record, according to Besson. “Normally we get about 38.3 millimetres of rain in July. We’ve had less than 10 millimetres,” said Besson. “But there has been quite a few years with less amounts than that.”

The North Star Rails to Trails Society is the proud owner of a new Mitsubishi microtruck, which will be used to service the immensely popular 26-kilometre biking/walking trail between Cranbrook and Kimberley. The Society acquired the vehicle with some help from C&S Performance, a Cranbrook vehicle brokerage business which helps customers import vehicles from overseas. After determining that the Mitsubishi was the appropriate vehicle, the Society approached Craig Simmons of C&S, who felt the most cost-effective way for the non-profit to get the vehicle was to import it directly from Japan. Three weeks, later, the right-hand drive truck arrived. Jason de Rijk of Sidekick Stickers contributed the decals and signage, and the Mitsubishi set set to go, transporting volunteers the length of the trail, so they can mow the shoulders, cut away tree branches, remove debris, and otherwise keep the trail spruce and looking its best for the busy summer season. The truck, with a three-cylinder, 660 cc engine, can get 40 miles to the gallon, and can travel for a week on one tank of gas. Though existing wildfires continue to grow around Cranbrook and Kimberley, there have been no new fires since the weekend SAL LY MACDONA L D Townsman Staff

Smoke from wildfires blazing around the East Kootenay has settled over Cranbrook and Kimberley, but the fires themselves have not grown much in size. There are now nine fires around Cranbrook and Kimberley, but no new fires have been detected since Tuesday, according to the B.C. Wildfire Management Branch. The largest fire, at Whitetail Brook, about 10 kilometres east of Canal Flats, is now at 1,700 hectares.

here were two setbacks reported on the front page of the Cranbrook Herald of August 27, 1914, some three and a half weeks after Canada found itself at war with Germany and Austria. “Ladies Defeat Cranbrook Ball Team (Errors by Locals and Steady Playing of Visitors Responsible for Result)” A visit by the “American Ladies Baseball Team” to Cranbrook on Friday, August 21, left the local baseball squad with a 7-2 loss in a seven-inning game. “Crowe started twirling for the local team,” the Herald reported. “”But it was his day off — or some of the girls had his nanny — for the visitors managed to secure four scores be-

scored the only runs for Cranbrook. Cranbrook also managed to load the bases in the fifth but were unable to connect for runs.” The other setback reported, of considerably more importance, was the initial report of what became known as the Battle of Mons, the British Expeditionary Force’s first major engagement of the new war, which would ultimately result in an epic retreat to the west. “Forced Back On First Offensive Line (Allies Atttempt Forward Movement But Are Repulsed),” was the headline in the Herald, August 27. The information was issued by the French War Office.

Mine sought second water release increase Tom Fle tcher Black Press

Mount Polley Mine management was awaiting a second permit amendment from the B.C. government to increase water released from its tailings facilities when the tailings pond dam breached in the early hours of Aug. 4. Ministry of Environment records show the mine has had an effluent permit since 1997, and has operated since startup with a water surplus due to precipitation. In 2009 the company applied to amend the permit to allow discharge of up to 1.4 million cubic meters of water a year to discharge

dam seepage effluent into Hazeltine Creek. That permit was approved in 2012 after an independent report was commissioned to examine water quality impacts from sediment and contaminants, and measures needed to control them. With the mine and its tailings facilities expanding and an exhausted pit being converted to underground mining, Mount Polley applied for another amendment to discharge up to three million cubic meters of treated water to Polley Lake. “That application was received by the

Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett said Mount Polley mine does not have acid-producing rock, which reacts with contaminants such as arsenic and mercury and allows them to mix with water. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett: “We will find out if the company was not in compliance,” Bennett said Wednesday. “If they were hiding anything, if they made mistakes in building the dam higher, we will find out and hold them to account.” permit amendment at a public meeting in Likely Tuesday, where residents were shocked at the devastation and worried about the water quality in their lakes and rivers. “I think we’re about to get the increase,” Kynoch said. Kynoch said the breach did not occur at the highest point of the tailings dam, where water pressure was greatest, and the pond level was 2.5 metres below the top of the dam at the time. Ministry records show Mount Polley was warned about high pond levels May 24, with the level returning

to authorized levels by June 30. In April the company was issued an advisory about bypass of authorized treatment works due to high water flows in the spring runoff period. Samples of tailings pond water taken Aug. 4 showed selenium concentration 2.8 times the drinking water guideline. Concentration of nitrates, cadmium, copper, iron and selenium have occasionally exceeded aquatic life guidelines in recent years. The permit required water volume not to exceed 35 per cent of the creek flow to dilute it.

Pot activists see political opportunities

C AROLYN GRANT Daily Bulletin

Despite coming up well short of the required 400,000 signatures during last year’s efforts to force a referendum on the decriminalization of marijuana, Sensible BC is in no way giving up. In fact, Sensible BC leader Dana Larsen believes that there is tremendous opportunity ahead on a number of fronts, including the municipal and federal elections. Municipalities across British Columbia elect new Mayors and Councils this November and a federal election is coming in 2015. The Bulletin spoke with Larsen this week on why he is feeling optimistic that

changes are coming to marijuana laws. Given the difficulties involved in meeting the criteria for a referendum — Larsen says B.C.’s requirements are the most complicated in the world — he says another referendum drive would be a last resort. “Even if we had all the signatures required now, voting wouldn’t happen until 2017,” Larsen said. It will be better, he believes, to focus on upcoming elections. “If we can see change federally, the province will follow,” he said. He also believes municipal governments have a large part to play and how a can-

didate stands on legalization or decriminalization is important. “Things are very different city to city. Looking at Vancouver, with dozens of cannabis dispensaries and very few arrests, we see how important the right Mayor can be. In other cities, you try to open a dispensary and it gets shut down. There are higher rates of possession charges. The local mayor and council have a big influence on police attitudes. “Also municipal politicians passed a resolution at the UBCM to support decriminalization. We’d like to see councillors move forward and keep the pressure on. Municipal governments have a

huge impact. “More cities in BC should be following Vancouver’s example, and making pot their lowest priority. Municipal elections are crucial for us — we can’t pass up this chance to achieve on-the-ground change. Larsen says that with municipal elections usually having low voter turnout, an

organized group can have an opportunity to make a difference. As for federally, he says that if the Conservative party remains in power there will be no chance for decriminalization or legalization in Canada. “With the NDP supporting decriminalization, and the Liberal and Green Parties pushing hard for legalization,

Nine fires burning in area Continued from page 1 “The growth has been towards the northeast, up Mount Glen. There has been no growth towards the south or the west,” said Fanny Bernard, fire information officer for the Southeast Fire Centre. It is now 50 per cent contained, with a Type 2 incident management team in charge. Close by, the White Rock fire remains active at 650 hectares, but it hasn’t grown in size. “It was active overnight, but the activity was limited to perimeters inside the fire. There was fuels burning inside the area of the fire,” said Bernard. A fire just south of these two at Sharktooth Mountain is now at 40 hectares. An area closure remains in place for Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park. There’s no access to Whiteswan, Kootenay or White Rock Forest Service Roads. The fire at Tanglefoot Creek, northeast of Cranbrook, is now at 15 hectares, but because of its remote location it is being monitored by the Wildfire Management Branch. Meanwhile, three fires west of Cranbrook and Kimberley are also

being monitored. A three-person initial attack crew with helicopter support is responding to a spot fire at Perry Creek. A 30-hectare fire at White Boar Lake is also being monitored, as is a 15-hectare fire at Meachen Creek. There is a small spot fire at Arfil Mountain, north of Sparwood and very remote, with an initial attack crew responding. And a 12 hectare fire at Kikomun Creek near Koocanusa is now 100 per cent contained and in the mop-up stage. None of the fires are threatening any communities or structures, Bernard confirmed. Meanwhile, hot, dry, windy weather conditions are making firefighting efforts more difficult. “We are monitoring the weather situation closely,” said Bernard. “It has been very warm and very dry and wind contributes to aggressive fire behaviour. “It’s because of this kind of weather that the campfire ban was put in place.” A campfire ban for the Southeast Fire District came into effect on Tuesday, August 5 and

will continue until further notice. The ban extends to campfires, the burning of any waste, slash or other materials, stubble or grass fires, burning barrels, fireworks, sky lanterns, tiki torches and outdoor fire pits. A smoky haze has settled over Cranbrook and Kimberley, but it’s not clear whether the smoke is coming from local fires, or from fires elsewhere in B.C. or the western United States. “It’s hard to say exactly on any given day where smoke is coming from,” said Bernard. The Ministry of Environment has not issued an air quality advisory for Cranbrook and Kimberley, but local air quality meteorologist Donna Haga said residents should use common sense in choosing their activities this week. “There is no real-time (air quality) monitor in Cranbrook or Kimberley so I don’t have any access to current levels of smoke,” said Haga. “Currently air quality advisories are only issued in communities that have real-time monitors that measure particulate matter levels.” The closest real-time air quality monitors are located in Creston and

Golden. “There is a long-term plan to put a station in in Cranbrook; it just hasn’t materialized yet.” But residents can observe the smoky haze over Cranbrook and Kimberley, and they should take that into consideration when outdoors this weekend, especially if they are vulnerable to poor air quality. “It’s not to say people shouldn’t carry on with their daily routine. I would suggest that if people are noticing symptoms, they should stop (what they are doing) and perhaps go see their medical provider,” said Haga. To view a computer model of the air quality forecast across western Canada for the next three days, visit www. bcairquality.ca/bluesky/ west/. Meanwhile, the Wildfire Management Branch has called for the assistance of about 80 wildfire personnel from Australia, through a reciprocal agreement where B.C. and Australia help each other out during their respective fire seasons. The personnel are not firefighters on the ground, Bernard said, but specialists such as

marijuana is going to be an election issue — no matter what. “We need to use our team to beat the Conservatives in B.C., which is a key election battleground. “We’ve got the strength to be active in every part of the province. We must identify the most cannabis-friendly candidates who have the best chance of winning in each riding, and then use our team to help get those people elected. “We’ve grown into quite a large organization now, and we can have a real impact on the election results if we use our considerable resources wisely. “Whatever the election results next year, we’ll keep fighting until the law is changed and cannabis prohibition is

incident commanders, fire behaviour specialists, and aircraft coordinators. They will arrive over the weekend and will be deployed as needed throughout the province. It’s not yet known whether any of the Australian personnel will be deployed to the East Kootenay. To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, phone 1-800-6635555 or *5555 on most cellular networks.

ended.” The other issue is what is happening in the U.S. with marijuana. As more and more states ease up on marijuana laws things are bound to change in Canada, Larsen says. “Twenty-four states now have at least legalized medical pot. Those trends have to make it easier for Canada.” Larsen says he hates to use the word ‘inevitable’ as nothing comes easily. Changing marijuana laws will require hard work. But he believes Sensible BC has a strong organization. The group will be hosting its first convention in Vancouver this fall. Paris before it counter-attacked with the French, at the Battle of the Marne. The result of the Battle of the Marne was the so-called “Race To The Sea,” with both sides trying to ouflank each other. How this “race” ended up was with four years of stalement and stagnant but bloody trench warfare. Another short story in the Herald reported the bombing of Antwerp, according to an eyewitness account by one Dr. Chas Sarolea. “Bombs From Airship Cause Fearful Havoc (Antwerp Bombarded From The Sky By Attack Of Zeppelin.” (This, as it turned out, was an airship called Z IX [Class M] which on 25 August dropped nine bombs on Antwerp, killing or wounding 26 people and damaging a royal palace. The Belgian royal family were in residence and the attack was widely condemned. Z IX was later destroyed in its hangar at Düsseldorf on October 8, 1914, by bombs dropped by Flt Lt. was good, and this “ordeal was but temporary.” “It is to be regretted that the offensive operations failed to achieve their purpose as a result of difficulties impossible to foresee. It would have shortened the war, but our defenses remain intact in the presence of an already weakened enemy.” The French release was remarkably voluable, compared to that of the British. The Herald printed a single terse paragraph from the London War Office. “British forces were engaged all day Sunday [August 23, 1914] and until after dark with the enemy in the neighbourhood of Mons, Belgium. They held their ground.” At Mons, the British Army attempted to hold the line of the Mons– Condé Canal against the advancing German 1st Army. Although the British fought well, they were eventually forced

“Allies Retire Intact” “On order of General Joffre, our (French) troops and the British troops withdrew to covering positions. Our troops are intact; our cavalry has in no way suffered and our artillery has affirmed its superiority. Our officers and soldiers are in the best condition, morally and physically.” The French War Office added this “aspect of the struggle will not change for a few days. The French Army will remain for a time on the defensive, but at the right moment, to be decided by the commander-in-chief, it will resume a vigorous offensive. “Our losses are heavy,” the bulletin from the French War Office continued. “It would be premature to enumerate them.” Apparently losses were heavy on all sides, but the general position

Sopwith Tabloid) . And thus, the Cranbrook Herald got an exclusive first glimpse of the airborne face of modern warfare, which would come to be so prominent as the century progressed. Most of the front page of the August 20 edition was taken up with the printing, in its entirety, of the “Eloquent Address by Sir Wilfrid Laurier [Leader of the Opposition] at Opening of Parliament in Ottawa (War Measures Passed Without Opposition).” The address takes up more than 2,000 words, and covers a variety of topics, including the statement that Canada has “no quarrel with the German people,” especially those Canadians of German descent. “They are certainly amongst our best citizens … certainly proud of the land of their adoption, to many of them the land of their birth. But they would not be men if they had not in their hearts a deep feeling of affection for the land of their ancestry. “ Sir Wilfrid went on to tell his fellow Canadians of German ancestry that “if the institutions of the land of their ancestors were as free as the institutions of the land of their adoption, this cruel war should never have

taken place.” Perhaps the most striking aspect of the front page of the Cranbrook Herald, August 27, 1914, was the complete list of Cranbrook’s first contingent — three squads of 59 men in total, 40 of whom had enlisted over the past week. These young men had been feted, feasted and celebrated for days, and the following day would board the train taking them “to the front.” This scene would be captured in Cranbrook’s most famous historical photograph, with the population of Cranbrook turning out on foot, by carriage and by motorcar to see the boys off. And thus passed Cranbrook’s first month of war, 100 years ago, August, 1914.

Footnote: An unrelated item on the August 27 edition proclaims the site of a Perry Creek Mining Claim as one of the greatest gold mining properties on the continent. They were heady, optimistic times in the late summer of 1914.

Getting High on Houndstooth Spire East Kootenay teens in the Bugaboos PAT MORROW For the Townsman

On July 25, the 6th Annual “Bugaboos Teens” climbing program, organized by the Conrad Kain Centennial Society, got off to an auspicious start. The 10 high school kids from Invermere, Kimberley and Cranbrook got to meet local mountain guiding legend Leo Grillmair, as they were getting outfitted at Canadian Mountain Holiday’s Bugaboo Lodge with climbing helmets, ice axes and crampons. Leo and CMH founder Hans Gmoser built the lodge in 1968, and in the intervening years Leo has introduced countless enthusiasts (including Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau) to the secrets of the world famous granite spires. After posing for a group photo, he bade them good luck with his full-bodied Austrian accent and the group began the 2-hour hike up the trail to the Conrad Kain Hut. The “Bugs” are a world-class climbing destination, and our objective was Houndstooth Spire. Sprouting from the middle of Bugaboo glacier, part of the challenge of reaching the summit is to negotiate the crevasses, visible and hidden, on the way to the rock and ice climbing on its north slopes. In order to get the team safely to and from the mountain and to give the participants rudimentary climbing instruction, Association of Canadian Mountain Guides Kirk Mauthner, Jen Olson and Tim

McAllister joined us again this year. Mt Baker High School Outdoor Ed teacher Leigh Cormier, BC Parks area supervisor Brett Yeates, mountain writer Lynn Martel and I rounded out the crew. During a rest stop, Brett gave an informative talk about BC Parks and career opportunities in the field of Outdoor Rec, Parks and Tourism in BC, which was convincing enough to recruit some new supporters of wild beautiful places in our province. The day was perfect and everyone celebrated the spectacular summit view, 1600 vertical meters off the valley floor. The next day, we climbed 2728 m Eastpost Spire. The trail passes by Canada’s most spectacular campsite called Applebee Dome, where among the 30 or more tents, we met two hard core alpine rock climbers, Will Stanhope from Squamish, BC and Matt Segal from Colorado. For the past three summers, the two have been trying to forge a new route on Snowpatch Spire’s east face and they light heartedly told the awestruck teens stories that reflected the commitment it takes to get there and the importance of following your dreams. Afterward, Jake Harach, from Mount Baker High School, was sufficiently inspired to write: “This trip changed the way I see mountaineering, and inspired me to get out there and experience all the amazing places that are right in our own backyard. I would hope to hear about the program’s continued success in years to come.”

Selkirk High School student Joy Johnson echoed his sentiments: “Experiencing the Bugaboo Teen Camp was absolutely amazing. This trip has inspired me to continue with my exploration of Canada’s amazing environments.” I received this equally rewarding email from a parent: “I just wanted to let you know what a profound impact these last few days have had on my daughter. Since returning from the Bugaboos, she has been showing me her images of the experience and

telling me all about it (she is usually pretty quiet). Judging by her descriptions of the experience I would have to say this has had a very large impact on her. She is all smiles and still beaming! A question I believe I’m sensing from her is what’s next? the back country, and this can be done with with friends and family. To learn the technical skills of climbing and rope work, almost every community in the Kootenays has a climbing wall. 100 years is not so long ago BARRY COULTER

My great-grandfather, name of Alwyn Bramley-Moore, was shot through the head by a sniper one night in March, 1916, near St. Eloi, France. This was shortly before the so-called Battle of the St. Eloi Craters, shortly before the Battle of the Somme, and shortly before the British Army began issuing steel helmets en masse to its troops, though who knows if a helmet would have helped my great-grandfather. Alwyn was an Englishman by birth and upbringing, but a Canadian by choice. He considered himself an Albertan even more so. He is one of the patron saints of the Western Canadian separatist movement, in fact, for his book “Canada and Her Colonies — Or, Home Rule For Alberta” (1911) about the exploitation of the west by “The Empire of the St. Lawrence.” Alwyn was also an Alberta MLA (Lloydminster, Liberal, 1909-1913). He is the only Alberta MLA to ever have been killed in war. He enlisted, 35 years old and the father of five children, in Edmonton, and as an Englishman was eventually joined to the “Sportsmen’s Battalion” of the Royal Fusiliers. However, he lobbied hard to get transferred to the newly formed Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, and served out the rest of his days as a Canadian in all respects. He was five months in the trenches, and reached the rank of Lance Corporal before he was killed. I have read Alwyn’s letters to his eldest son, my grandfather. This collection includes a letter

Alwyn Bramley-Moore is in the front row, second from right, pictured with the “Sportsmen’s Battalion” of the Royal Fusiliers, autumn, 1915. from Alwyn’s war buddy, in reply to my grandfather’s letter asking how Alwyn had died. Alwyn’s friend wondered in his reply how Alwyn could have been so careless, as usually he was extremely cautious when moving around the trenches at night. It’s a flight of fancy of mine that Alwyn was killed on the third light with the same match. It’s a superstition that derives from the Great War — never light a third cigarette on the same match. You and your two chums in the trenches decide to have a smoke one night. You light a match for your first chum — the sniper across No-Man’sLand looks up. You move the light over to your second chum’s cigarette — the sniper throws his gun up and takes aim. You move the light over to your own smoke … My great-grandfather smoked a pipe, which you have

to hold a match to longer to get a good light, giving a sniper more time to aim. Like I said, a flight of my imagination … My other great-grandfather on that side of my family was a German, who immigrated to Canada and started a German language newspaper in Edmonton. When the war began, he unwisely editorialized in favour of the German cause, and his newspaper offices were burnt down in 1917 by an angry mob. I suppose if he were able to write those editorials for almost three years, then that’s a pretty good run. In any case, one of his three daughters, my grandmother, once told me that he was “never the same after that,” which was a euphemism for “went into a speedy decline.” One of Alwyn’s letters advised his eldest son, my grandfather, not to “join any anti-German leagues” at home,

for after his time in the trenches he had come to respect his enemy as “jolly good fighters.” In the same letter he encouraged his son to be a “good Albertan,” first and foremost. My grandfather obviously took this advice to heart, for he did marry my grandfather, that young German woman, not many years later — which caused a certain amount of angst amongst his very English family, still mourning their fallen hero in the Great War. But that’s another long story. It strikes me that 100 years ago is in fact a very short time, that the events that had such an impact on their lives back then have had a great impact on ours. I feel, when reading those letters, that I can lift my head and speak to them. Barry Coulter is Editor of the Cranbrook Daily Townsman

Not so great expectations of Charles Dicken’s third son

C

harles Dickens had an exceptionally positive impact on the world. In addition to changing the the state of Victorian literature, he also created the first women’s shelter, the first children’s hospital, campaigned against slavery in the U.S., and changed the way people thought about the poor, the disabled, and the uneducated. His character descriptions were so detailed that he unknowingly described over a dozen medical conditions a full century before physicians could recognize and name them. His impact on the world is, and will continue to be, enormous. Not so his son. Francis Jeffrey Dickens inherited all of his father’s weaknesses and none of his strengths. Unable to complete any form of study or keep a job, his father finally gave him an editorial position at one of his magazines. Francis was an unmitigated disaster, and was quickly removed. Although he could pass none of the entrance exams, Francis obtained a job with England’s Foreign Office in India (it is believed his father ‘bought’ him the position). It was the last time father and son would see each other.

Francis returned to England seven years later to attend his father’s funeral. He quickly drank and gambled away his inheritance, and—like one of his father’s famous characters—was soon begging off of his siblings. Since India didn’t want him back, his eldest sister used her father’s connections to find him work…in Canada. Alexander Mackenzie, our second prime BOOKNOTES minister, had recently helped to create someMike thing the new country Selby desperately needed: The North West Mounted Police. He assigned Francis the rank of inspector, and sent him out to man forts in Saskatchewan and Alberta. It was here in the Canadian frontier where Francis Dickens true nature shined, and he had incredible impact on the North West Mounted Police. An incredibly inept and appalling one. The first thing he did was almost get his entire detachment killed on three separate occasions. After some settlers lodged a complaint against the Blackfoot Indians, Francis ignored protocol (i.e. get the Blackfoot’s side of the story, secure cooperation with Blackfoot leaders, etc.), and marched onto native lands to make an arrest. Outmanned and outgunned (not an easy thing

to do against 12 armed NWMP members), Francis needed to be rescued each and every time. After forever ruining the relations between the Blackfoot Indians and the NWMP, Francis was transferred to Fort Pitt in Saskatchewan. When the Frog Lake Massacre occurred (Cree Indians attacked the Frog Lake Settlement, killing many settlers), the survivors fled to Fort Pitt for safety. Francis’ ability to negotiate with the Cree ended with one constable killed, one wounded, and a third taken prisoner. Francis abandoned his post and retreated to the town of Battleford. In the spring of 1886 the NWMP had no more use for Francis, regardless of who his father was. Unable to secure any other employment in Canada, Francis decided to take a page out of his father’s book, and go on a lecture tour of the United States. Right before his first lecture in June of that year he dropped dead from a heart attack. He was 42. Francis Dickens’ NWMP sword is on currently on display at Calgary’s Glenbow Museum. But they haven’t cent of adult deaths. The last new class of gone through the full testing process that is antibiotics, carbapenems, was approved in necessary before they are approved for 1980. Since then, nothing – even though human use, because nobody was willing to the usefulness of existing antibiotics is rapidly eroding as resistant strains of bacteria pay for it. The normal procedure in the United emerge. That’s a big threat, but antibiotics are States, home to more than half of the world’s major drug companies (“Big Phar- still not big money-makers, as they are ma”), is that basic research for new drugs used for relatively short periods of time to may be paid for by government grants or fight some specific infection. So no new type of antibiotic has been even by private philanthropy (like Bill Gates’s $200 million donation for research developed by Big Pharma for more than on a malaria vaccine), but the work of three decades. A minimum of 23,000 people in the bringing the drugs to market is left to the commercial companies. All too often, they United States died last year of infections that would once have been easily ended by simply can’t be bothered. It costs hundred of millions of dollars to antibiotics; in the European Union the take a drug through the whole approval total was 25,000. There are some measures that would process and put it on the market. That’s

dramatically slow the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Far fewer prescriptions should be written for antibiotics, and doctors should be monitored to ensure that they are not over-prescribing. Patients must complete any course of antibiotics that they begin, and report that they have done so. Over-the-counter sales of antibiotics in countries like China and Russia must cease. Above all, it should be a criminal offence to feed antibiotics to animals just to make them grow faster and bigger. (That is where 80 percent of the antibiotics consumed in the United States go at the moment.) And even when all that has been done, the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria will continue, though at a much slower pace. Bacterial resistance is an evolutionary process that can only be slowed, not stopped. So we desperately need new antibiotics, and there are none forthcoming. Without them, warned Dame Sally Davies, chief medical officer for England, “Modern medicine would quickly go out of the window.” Almost all surgery, including things as commonplace as caesarian sections and hip replacements, and most cancer treatments as well, involve a significant risk of infection that must be controlled by antibiotics. As Prime Minister Davd Cameron told “The Times”: “If we fail to act...we are cast back into the dark ages of medicine, where treatable infections and injuries will kill once again.” Yet Big Pharma will not fill the gap, for those companies are answerable to their shareholders, not to the public. The case for direct state intervention to finance the development of the vaccines and antibiotics that the commercial sector neglects is overwhelming. And very urgent.

DuToit finishes strong at Canadian Amateur Kimberley native knocks down final-round 68 to land top-20 finish at Elmhurst Golf & Country Club TAYLOR ROCC A Sports Editor

Jared duToit might not be coming home from the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship with the title, but he can be proud of his performance. DuToit, a native of Kimberley, completed his final round Thursday morning at Elmhurst Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg by nailing three birdies over the course of his last five holes. The run pulled duToit to two-under on the day and one-over on the week, good enough to finish tied for 18th. “I got a little aggressive coming in and I think it paid off,” duToit said over the phone from Winnipeg Thursday afternoon. “The swing was DOUGLAS PORTZ/GOLF CANADA PHOTO

there today and I was making a lot of putts. “I was pretty happy with [my play] today. I obviously left a couple [strokes] out there but I made a couple [shots] that I shouldn’t have.” The 19-year-old DuToit registered scores of 70, 75, 70 and 68 at his first Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. DuToit had qualified for the three previous Canadian Men’s Amateur Championships, but chose not to attend. “Every tournament you play in, if you don’t want to win, you probably shouldn’t be there,” duToit said. “Coming into the week I expected [to finish] higher than I finished but golf is such a game that you have to

work with what you’re given and I did that. “I can feed off that and hopefully next year more practice and more preparation will tighten everything up with my game.” DuToit finished seven strokes back of tournament champion James Beale of New Zealand, who took the title after a three-hole playoff with Taylor Pendrith of Richmond, Ont. and Jonathan Garrick of Atherton, Calif. All three finished the tournament at six-under par. By winning the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, Beale earns a spot in the 2014 U.S. Amateur Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club (Highlands Course) in Johns

Creek, Ga. (Aug. 11 to 17) as well as the 2015 RBC Canadian Open in Oakville, Ont. at world-renowned Glen Abbey Golf Club (July 20 to 26, 2015). From here, DuToit will take a few weeks off from competition before returning to the University of Idaho for the 201415 NCAA golf season. DuToit is coming off his freshman year at the University of Idaho where he competed in 11 tournaments as a member of the Idaho Vandals golf team. With an average score of 72.33, DuToit registered the best scoring average on the team, earning first-team all-Western Athletic Conference and Freshman of the Year honours.

Niedermayer charity game a hit Team Scott edges Team Rob in back-and-forth affair

TAYLOR ROCC A Sports Editor

The annual Niedermayer Hockey School Staff Charity Game was a back-and-forth affair Thursday night at Western Financial Place Arena with Team Scott out-gunning Team Rob by a final tally of 5-4. “Being on the ice with these kids that are so excited about the game…things like that mean a lot,” Scott said. “We’re proud to be from Cranbrook and it’s nice to be able to come back and a part of what’s going on here.” Though one team came out on the losing end, the evening was for a good cause as donations collected at the door were donated to the Niedermayer Family Fund. “It was a close game but we weren’t really chirping each other much, it was more fun stuff out there,” said Edge Hockey owner Peder Lodoen. “I hope the kids see that whether you’re winning or losing, the game is still fun and I think we showed them that tonight. “That’s what the Niedermayer Hockey School is all about — showing these kids how

to play the game, but also how to have fun playing it.” Adorned in black sweaters, Team Rob opened the scoring in the first frame, taking the lead early on before Team Scott knotted things prior to intermission. As the final half of play got underway, it was clear Team Scott had the decisive edge as the red sweaters claimed a 2-1 lead less than three minutes into the period. It was all Team Scott from there as the older Niedermayer brother led his side to a 4-2 advantage with the assistance of former Kootenay Ice star Jason Jaffray. The 33-year-old Jaffray loves returning to Cranbrook to help with the hockey school. The fact he has been coaching at the school for more than a decade is a testament to that. “It feels good to shut down Rob Niedermayer,” Jaffray said laughing. “This is probably the first staff game he didn’t scored a goal. “I was told that I was just supposed to shadow him out there and make sure he didn’t score and it worked.” Team Rob didn’t go

Most of those games are 15-13 or something, but the

goalies played well. They were definitely the first two stars.” Proceeds from the game go towards the Niedermayer Family Fund, which assists numerous charities in the Cranbrook area on an annual basis. The fundraising total from the evening was not available by press time.

Woods struggles at PGA Championship Paul Ne wberry Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Maybe Tiger Woods should have stayed at home. Looking much like a guy who could barely bend over last weekend, Woods sprayed shots all over Valhalla and faced a daunting deficit at the PGA Championship before heavy favourite Rory McIlroy even teed off Thursday. “That wasn’t very good,’’ said Woods, who

made only one birdie — and had to hole out from the fairway to do that — on the way to a 3-over 74. “A lot of bad shots.’’ One landed in a creek. Another sent the gallery scrambling. Yet another rolled into a fenced-off area where fans can use cellphones, a good 30 yards right of the fairway. Too bad Woods couldn’t call for help. “I didn’t play as well as I wanted to. I didn’t get a putt to the hole,’’ he

his second shot over a fence and took double bogey. The 25-year-old ripped off four straight birdies starting at No. 12 to reach 4 under. Woods’ main objective Friday will be making the cut, though he insisted he still has a chance to capture his 15th major title. “I just don’t see, on this golf course, guys going super low here,’’ he said, apparently not having seen the scoreboard. “I’ve got to get to under

said. “That’s not a good combo.’’ Lee Westwood, shooting his best score ever at the PGA Championship, was joined at 65 by Ryan Palmer and Kevin Chappell, leaving Woods nine shots off the lead. Jim Furyk and Edoardo Molinari were one stroke back. Coming off wins at the British Open and Firestone, McIlroy made an afternoon charge after stumbling at the 10th, where he knocked

par by the end of tomorrow. ... If I can get under par for two rounds, that’s going to be right in the ballgame.’’ Woods didn’t arrive at Valhalla until Wednesday, having been in Florida undergoing treatment for a back injury that forced him to withdraw at Firestone on Sunday. He struggled to pick up his tee and change his shoes, but insisted that he was fit by the time he got to Kentucky.

against Baltimore. He left the game after just three innings. The Blue Jays had been hoping Lawrie would be able to rest and avoid another trip to the DL. Lawrie was placed on the DL retroactive to Wednesday. To fill up the 25-man roster, the team recalled left-handed reliever Rob Rasmussen from Triple-A Buffalo.

With KIJHL training camps approaching, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats made two deals this week as they look to address potential roster holes. The Thunder Cats first shipped 19-year-old forward Ethan Rusnack to the Kelowna Chiefs. In exchange, Creston Valley received the playing rights for 18-year-old Nick Kovacik. Rusnack spent the past two seasons in the Creston Valley, tallying 25 goals and 54 points through 69 games. During his rookie season in the KIJHL, Kovacik made his name known, scoring 17 goals and 40 points in 48 games with the Chiefs. Creston Valley then swapped forward Colton St. John and future considerations to the Princeton Posse in exchange

Thunder Cats swing two deals Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

“My swing was dialed in on the range,’’ Woods said. ``Unfortunately, I just didn’t carry it to the golf course.’’ Phil Mickelson, mired in his longest winless streak since 2003, was paired with Woods for one of the rare times at a major. Lefty was 1 over midway through his round, struggling just like his playing partner, but fought back on the second nine for a 69.

“It’s a little bit stiff,’’ he said of his back, “but that’s about it.’’ Still, Woods was playing just his 11th competitive round since undergoing back surgery March 31. The rustiness showed as he grappled with his swing and never figured out the speed of the greens. Woods had to sit out the first two majors of the year and posted his worst 72-hole finish in a major at the British Open.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) A new beginning becomes possible with someone you respect. It would be helpful to understand what you really want from this person. Your actions could surprise others. A key person will share his or her conservative view on a fiscal matter. Tonight: A must appearance. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Keep reaching for what you want. You might need to take a class or do some type of workshop. Travel and foreigners could play into the scenario. Even if you feel insecure, you will do your best to put up a positive front. Tonight: Try a different spot. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Deal with a partner or loved one directly. You might think you know what this person is going to say, but you will be wrong. In fact, try to eliminate second-guessing others altogether, and a more creative dialogue is likely to occur. Tonight: Start with TGIF.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Deal with someone as directly as possible. You might want to lie low a bit and let others do most of the initiating or talking; you will receive more answers to your questions that way. A boss or older friend continues to act unpredictably. Tonight: Defer to others. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You might need to make some time to run errands or do other important activities. You could be overwhelmed by everything you need to get done. Use this day to lighten your load so that you can relax more over the weekend. Tonight: Continue to clear out tasks. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You might be hard-pressed to follow your routine. You typically are such a dedicated and responsible sign. Make it OK to be a little frivolous and less rigid. Take off early to start your weekend. Tonight: Accept an invitation only after you have sorted through all the possibilities. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Tundra

If you can stay close to home, do. You will be able to get past an immediate hassle or two just by being there. You might be surprised by someone’s response. A child or loved one will be delighted by your availability. Tonight: You don’t have to go far. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You might want to see a situation from a different point of view. Open up a conversation and allow yourself to have greater give-and-take with others. Don’t put any ideas down; instead, work with each one and get feedback from others. Tonight: Join friends as soon as you can. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might want to rethink a decision more carefully, especially as it appears to have monetary implications. Try to move past a problem or look at it from a different perspective. Your decision could be different from your original one. Tonight: Use care with funds. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’ll sense that the weekend is

approaching. In fact, you might have taken off for the day and will be heading to a favorite summer spot. Put yourself first, and you will be just fine. Understanding evolves with a key loved one. Tonight: The only answer is “yes.” AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You could feel a bit off. In fact, you’ll find that you are happiest with your own company at home or off doing some kind of solo activity. You don’t need to give an explanation; others are likely to have a similar experience. Tonight: Time for your vanishing act! PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Friends surround you. You can be supportive to those around you, but your agenda might require someone else’s interest or involvement. Do not pressure this person to collaborate with you. Just let him or her see what you’re capable of. Tonight: Time for festivities. BORN TODAY Actor Dustin Hoffman (1937), singer Mel Tillis (1932), musician Mark Wills (1973) ***

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My daughter was recently ordered by the court to have her 5-year-old son visit his biological father and grandparents every other weekend. They live 200 miles away. The boy has always lived with his mother, because the biological father felt he was not ready to be a dad and deserted them. He and his parents cut off contact for five years, and now they have decided they want to spend time with the boy. Here’s the disturbing part. When at their house, my grandson is not permitted to eat at the family table. He eats at a small table in the corner. He’s only permitted to eat or drink at certain times, he cannot phone his mother when he wants, he sleeps in a room in the basement, he must call the grandparents by specific names or they won’t speak to him, and most recently, he came home with so many mosquito bites that he required medical attention. Once, the biological father brought him home so sick that he missed a week of school. Over the summer, his biological father tried to teach him to use the lawn mower, but the child refused because his mother told him (rightfully) that it is too dangerous and he is too little. As a result, he was sent to his room in the basement. My gut tells me they are trying to injure the child, and I have serious doubts about their sincerity in wanting a relationship. My daughter’s lawyer has been contacted, but is there anything we can do in the interim to protect the boy from such horrible abuse? -Worried Grandma Dear Worried: Based on your information, we’re not certain this qualifies as “horrible abuse.” It seems more like neglect combined with incompetent parenting skills. The biological father and his parents have no clue how to properly treat or raise a 5-yearold boy. The lawyer should go to the judge immediately with whatever documentation he has and ask for supervised visitation, and possibly mandate that the biological father take parenting classes. If you believe the boy is truly being abused, contact the National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453. Dear Annie: Thank you for printing the letter about celiac disease. I hope you have space for a letter about children who are severely food allergic. Food allergies were not part of our world in 1999. That is when our baby developed hives after eating mixed cereal. The pediatrician said, “Maybe he’s allergic to the wheat in the cereal. Give him Benadryl.” We didn’t know that “allergic to wheat” was serious or that wheat was in almost everything in our pantry, from BBQ sauce to root beer, cereals, potato chips, candy, hand cream, shampoo and sunblock. The early reactions were just hives. There was no thought of converting our kitchen or segregating him at school. The first anaphylactic reaction came at age 4. The ER doctors explained cross-contamination. We were told to read all food labels and always carry EpiPens. At age 13, our son now cautiously sits at the school lunch table with his friends and goes to ballgames, overnight camp and select restaurants. We continue to be vigilant. One crumb of wheat in his mouth would lead us to the ER. We are hopeful that somewhere in the universe someone will find a cure for this life-threatening and life-altering allergy. We would like to share some resources about food allergies with your readers. Please suggest they contact: Mothers of Children Having Allergies (mochallergies.org); Food Allergy Research and Education (foodallergy.org) (this is a merger of the Food Allergy Initiative and Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network); the Stanford Alliance for Food Allergy Research (foodallergies.stanford.edu); the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (aaaai.org/conditions-and-treatments/ allergies/food-allergies.aspx). -- B. in Chicago Dear B.: Thank you so much for this excellent information on food allergies. We hope our readers will take advantage of these resources. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
