Numbers down in ‘homeless count’ By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

There are fewer homeless people in Langley this year, than there were in 2011. The final numbers are in from the one-day Metro Vancouver homeless count. It saw an 11 per cent decrease in Langley’s homeless population in 2014. On the day of the count, March 12, volunteers located 92 people who were homeless in Langley and Aldergrove. Volunteers went out to known homeless camps, gathering spots and to the Gateway of Hope to gather information about Langley’s homeless population. More than 900 volunteers fanned out across the region to obtain a 24-hour snapshot of people who are homeless. A preliminary report came out in April but now the final numbers are now in. The last count was done in 2011. At that time, Langley’s volunteers counted 103 people who were homeless.

In 2008 there were 86, and in 2005, there were 57 people homeless. When the count began, in 2002, Langley only had 18 homeless people counted. Most communities in Metro Vancouver saw a significant drop this year. Langley has the third highest number of children and youth living on the streets, with only Vancouver and Surrey higher. In fact, 16 teens were found to be unsheltered. But Loren Roberts of the Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services said that number paints an inaccurate picture. “We know of five youth right now who are living without shelter and four of those are not interested in getting help from us,” said Roberts. But Roberts said the numbers still point to the need for a youth shelter here in Langley, something that so far doesn’t exist. He has been working hard to make that happen and has received a lot of support from SEE: Page 3 the Township.

With less than a month to go until the Langley 2014 B.C. Seniors Games , the push is on to secure a few hundred more volunteers. The organizing committee is about halfway to the goal of 1,500 volunteers for the Games, which run Sept. 9 to 13, said Michael Jackstien, the vice-president of the Games. “Our push is to get the number of volunteers up,” Jackstien said. Volunteers can commit as little as a half a day to working the full week. “From directing participants along raceroutes to helping at the awards podium, there is something for everybody and all age groups,” said Games’ president Milt Kruger. The organizers are also challenging local groups to support the Games with employee volunteers. “The Games are a perfect way for companies to give back to the community through team

participation,” Kruger said. “Several organizations are already participating, but there is a need for more.” Two of the main areas more help is needed in are medical services and transportation. And for those without first aid, the Games organizers have a company which will train potential volunteers, Jackstien said. As for transportation, no special licence is needed as the organizers have a fleet of 35 cars, ready to drive competitors to and from the venues. Other areas in which volunteers are needed include: sport set up and management; lost and found; traffic control; security; hosting and medal presentation; results centre; and participant accreditation. To register as a volunteer, either go to the Games office, 101 - 20560 Fraser Hwy.) between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, phone 604-533-8065 or email direct to: volunteer@bcsg2014.com

Aldergrove senior and younger associate to be tried for property theft Aldergrove Star

A 31-year-old Aldergrove man and his 74-year-old associate will go to trial facing several charges in relation to stolen property allegedly found on their 256 Street property. Derek Hall is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, eight counts of possession of stolen property and public mischief. He is also charged with theft of six metal garbage containers found on the accuseds’ property in the 6600 block of 256 Street. He shares the acreage with his co-accused Roeloff Dendyver, 74, who is charged with several property crimes, as well as assaulting a police officer in October 2012. After a lengthy investigation. charges were laid against the two men. They are accused in a number of property crimes, including stealing a brand new truck during a test drive, and stealing a bulldozer and trailer.

Police allege Dendyver attended a local dealership and test drove a new 2012 Dodge pickup. A short time later, he reported to police that he had been carjacked and the truck stolen. Later that month, Langley RCMP received a report of a new Dodge pickup truck parked in the trees on the property where the two men live. However, when officers went there, no truck was found. Also in March, Langley RCMP received a report that a Caterpillar loader and a Komatsu bulldozer had been stolen from a construction site. As Langley RCMP Street Enforcement Unit continued their investigation, they applied for and were granted a search warrant for the accuseds’ property. During the search, both the loader and bulldozer were recovered, as well as a key for the new Dodge pickup that had allegedly

been carjacked. Additionally, a large utility trailer was located on the property and determined to have been stolen. It was returned to the owner. The Dodge pickup truck was recovered at a residence of a relative of the older man. The vehicle was returned to the dealership. Additionally, when police arrived on the property and announced they would be executing the search warrant, the elderly man allegedly punched one of the officers in the face. Dendyver is charged with public mischief, assaulting a peace officer and possession of stolen property. The two are also jointly charged with theft of a motor vehicle, and two counts of possession of stolen property. They were back in Surrey Provincial Court for a pre-trial conference on July 26. Neither is in custody.

‘Dog walker’ faces 6 charges By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

Crown counsel has approved numerous charges of animal cruelty against Delta dogwalker Emma Paulsen. The BC SPCA filed a report recommending the charges against Paulsen in May after six dogs died in her care. Paulsen initially reported the dogs stolen from the Brookswood off-leash dog park in Langley on May 13, sparking a huge community search for the missing animals. But nearly a week later she admitted that the dogs had died of heat exhaustion after she left them in her vehicle on a hot day. It is believed that took place in Richmond. Langley RCMP met with Paulsen and she led them to a ditch in Abbotsford where all six dogs were dumped. Of the six dogs that died, one was her ex-husband’s and children’s border collie. The SPCA had a necropsy done on each dog and it confirmed the canines

died of heat exhaustion. Paulsen has been charged with animal cruelty and neglect under both the Criminal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. “Every charge that we recommended – and really, every possible animal cruelty-related charge that she could have faced – has been approved,” said Marcie Moriarty, SPCA chief prevention and enforcement officer. “We could not be more pleased.” Paulsen faces six charges including killing an animal, causing unnecessary suffering, pain or injury, neglecting to provide adequate food, water or shelter, failing to protect and animal from circumstances that are likely to cause distress, causing or permitting distress and intent to mislead police in an investigation. Paulsen faces a maximum fine of $75,000, up to five years in jail and a ban of owning or having custody of animals for a period of time determined by the judge.

Homeless counts are all down FROM FRONT:

He is hoping to work further with the City. While all homeless counts are undercounts, it appears the number of people who are homeless is down or stable across Metro Vancouver, excluding Vancouver, which saw a significant increase.

The report from the Homeless Steering Committee said further research needs to be done to figure out why there appears to be fewer homeless people in Metro Vancouver. Are they getting quicker and more successful access to housing and support? Or are there fewer people becoming homeless? The answer to those questions isn’t clear.

Warawa optimistic ‘common sense’ will prevail in Figueroa deportation case By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

José Figueroa hopes to clear his name once and for all in Federal Court on Aug. 14 in Vancouver. Figueroa’s lawyer is hoping to get a certificate indicating that the Langley father of three is not on any terrorist list because the group he supported while living in El Salvador during the civil war is not on any federal terrorist list. The court hearing was delayed from July. The fact that the FMLN isn’t on any list has already been agreed upon verbally by both Immigration Canada and the courts, but the certificate would provide reassurance and help solidify any doubts, he said. “This certificate we are looking for will constitute proof that I don’t pose a security risk and also would help to clear up my name against the allegation of membership with a terrorist organization,” said Figueroa. He can’t attend the hearing because he has sought sanctuary for the past nine months at his church. But he will listen in via telephone conference. The Canadian Border Service Agency still have an arrest warrant out for him and continue to watch Figueroa all the time. The CBSA put out an arrest warrant for him to be detained in October

Mine spill ‘unlikely’ to harm spawning sockeye

The Mount Polley mine tailings pond spill is “unlikely” to significantly harm Fraser River sockeye now returning to spawn in fouled Quesnel Lake, according to the Pacific Salmon Commission. The agency managing salmon fisheries said it doesn’t expect the peak of the sockeye migration to reach Quesnel Lake until the first week of September, giving about 20 days for river and lake conditions there to improve. In a news release issued Friday it also noted the “encouraging results” of initial water quality tests released by the province is a cause for optimism. But the commission cautioned there are also juvenile sockeye currently rearing in the lake and it’s too soon to tell whether they will be severely affected. “The spill could impact their survival and food supply,” it said. Great concern persists among First Nations and other salmon users over the potential for contamination and longlasting damage to the fishery as a result of the mine disaster. Between 845,000 and 2.95 million sockeye are forecast to spawn in the Quesnel system this year – about a quarter of the summer run and seven per cent of all Fraser sockeye stocks combined. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has not directly commented on the threat to salmon, saying Environment Canada is the lead federal agency. “Fisheries and Oceans Canada will be closely monitoring the salmon run as it approaches the

Jay Oswald throws sockeye into a bin on a receiving barge at Kanaka Landing in Maple Ridge during the first commercial opening of the season along the Fraser River for three hours Monday afternoon. Quesnel system over the coming days to assess the potential effects of these pollutants and other factors including water temperature on salmon returns,” the department said via an emailed statement. The Fraser continues to run at lower levels and higher temperatures than average, adding to concern that significant numbers of sockeye could die on their way upstream before spawning. But officials say incoming sockeye look healthy and most are migrating through Johnstone Strait, rather than Juan de Fuca Strait on the west side of Vancouver Island. Commercial fishing has already been open offshore to trollers since Aug. 2 and gillnetters who fish on the lower river between Steveston and Mission will get their first opening on Monday afternoon. There’s no in-season estimate of the overall run size yet.

But major components of the run are tracking close to the mid-range of what had been predicted in advance. That suggests a total sockeye return closer to the median forecast of 23 million, rather than the low end of seven million or a record high return of 72 million. Area E Gillnetters Association spokesman Bob McKamey said it looks to be the best return since the large run of more than 30 million sockeye in 2010. The last two years have been bleak for gillnetters, with only one chum opening each of the past two years and no sockeye fisheries. “They have waited a long time for a sockeye fishery. A lot us are just looking forward to getting a fresh one to the table.” He expects steady openings for the 300 or so commercial gillnetting boats for several weeks. “We’re expecting regular week-day open-

ings from now until September.” Limited recreational fisheries for sockeye opened on the Fraser River last week, which catch limits of four per day, while aboriginal ceremonial and food sockeye fishing started two weeks ago. Unionized commercial fishermen, meanwhile, have denounced the lack of government oversight of the Mount Polley mine. “We have fleets of boats with observers or cameras watching our every move to fish sustainably, and nobody is watching these folks as they destroy our ecosystem,” said said Kim Olsen, president of the Unifor local representing fishermen and allied workers. “ Where has the BC Ministry of Environment been? Where has Environment Canada been? The oversight is pathetic.” – with files from Phil Melnychuk

VICTORIA – The B.C. government’s intentions for the Agricultural Land Reserve have been clarified by a public consultation that proposes new commercial and industrial uses on farmland. Political watchers may recall that this was the hill the NDP was prepared to die on this spring. It was going to be a farmland looting spree for right-wing property developers and all hope of “food security” would be dashed. As I attempted to explain at the time, the changes have little or nothing to do with ALR exclusions. Now a discussion paper poses a series of questions, some of which illustrate the need to bring farmland regulations up to date. The first one deals with restrictions on retail sales, a case study in arbitrary state control. There is a strict maximum floor space. A minimum one half of retail sales must be produced on that farm. Food packing, preparation and processing are similarly restricted. This requires multiple duplicate operations of questionable viability. It brings to mind Mao Tse Tung’s Great Leap Forward, in which farmers all had little iron smelting furnaces out back to make tools. But I digress. “Amongst other things,” the discussion paper says, “lessening the restrictions on on-farm processing could

Farm changes a great leap forward

allow the establishment of abbatoirs (large, small or mobile) on farms, to serve surrounding cattle, game or poultry farms.” Then there’s cheese, fruit juice and even medical marijuana products. And did you know that wineries and cideries are allowed on farmland but breweries, distilleries and meaderies aren’t? (Mead is made from honey, and doesn’t have to be drunk from a bronze mug while wearing a horned helmet.) Now that we’ve discovered that breweries don’t have to be giant urban industrial plants producing mediocre lager that all tastes the same, possibilities abound. On-farm wine and cider sales have similarly quaint retail space and product origin restrictions. The government proposes to allow sales of products not made on site, as long as they’re made in B.C. This could make more local retail beverage co-ops viable. Or it could spawn a wave of unregulated rural liquor stores that create chaos on country roads. You decide. On a more serious note, there are a couple of questions about changes to the newly created “zone two,” the Interior, Kootenay and North regions. One repeats the government’s intention to open up non-farm use rules to allow certain oil and gas service

functions on farmland. This is to reflect the reality already on the ground in the Northeast. What other non-farm activities it may entail is not yet known, as the consultation and regional meetings continue until Aug. 22. There are proposals to bypass the Agricultural Land Commission for certain kinds of farmland subdivision in zone two. These are where the subdivided parcels are a quarter section (160 acres) or bigger, or where they are divided by a road or waterway. And finally there are proposed exemptions from ALC scrutiny of leases, to allow “intergenerational transfer,” so retiring farmers don’t have to plead for state permission to remain on their own property. Another exemption would “encourage the use of otherwise unfarmed land by existing or new farmers.” NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham, who circulated a photo of herself with a samurai sword in a theatrical “Kill Bill 24” campaign, continues to insist that these changes open up 90 per cent of ALR land for “development.” It’s a hypocritical as well as a misleading statement, since a portion of her own Saanich farm property is rented to a successful craft gin distillery. Proposed new federal government regulations for railway/ road crossings will cost the Township of Langley more than $300,000, just to carry out required safety assessments. A report to council by municipal transportation engineer Richard Welfing adds the Township will also be on the hook for the additional cost of fixing any safety issues uncovered by the assessments, fixes that must be made within five years. “The Township of Langley has 29 at-grade crossings for a total estimated assessment cost of $295,000 to $435,000,” the Welfing report says. While there is federal funding for safety improvements to atgrade crossings, the funding is limited and projects are often put on a waitlist, the Welfing report warns. Collision statistics from ICBC show of the 43,000 car and truck crashes recorded between 2008 and 2012 in Langley, 90 or less than one per cent occurred in level crossings. “Staff is concerned that if significant resources are required to address at-grade railway crossings and the new standards, that this would limit the resources available to address others locations,” the report says. It identifies other concerns about the proposed new regulations, including the lack of a time limit that trains can block a level crossings, a general lack of clarity concerning responsibilities and the implications for owners of private priority with level crossings who may not be aware of the proposed changes.” The report recommended council send a copy of the findings to the federal government, local MLA and TransLink along with a letter saying the Township does not support the proposed regulations. The vote was unanimous. “This is a substantial download onto the Township,” Councillor Charlie Fox said. “This is huge,” Councillor David Davis said.

New Langley overpasses ‘may not be enough’ By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

A senior official from Port Metro Vancouver has indicated newly-built rail overpasses may not be enough to handle future increases in train traffic through Langley. Cliff Stewart, vice-president of infrastructure delivery at Port Metro Vancouver, was giving what he called a “state of the port” presentation to the July 14 afternoon meeting of Township council. Under questioning from council, Stewart said when the new overpasses going up along the rail line to the Deltaport container terminal were designed, about 10 years ago, they were engineered to handle all expected future expansions in port capacity, including the creation of a new terminal 2. But the capacity of both the existing Deltaport and the planned new terminal have grown above that forecast, Stewart said. “We’re back looking at what the incremental train movements are likely to be,” Stewart said. “Those studies are underway right now … to see

what infrastructure, if any, is required to address the incremental differences.” Councillor David Davis was one of several members of council who warned Stewart people in Langley are worried about increased congestion on the rail corridor that divides their community. “The railroad can be almost as bad as a river or an international border,” Davis said. “It’s good for business, but it can slow a community down.” The port authority has announced a Gateway Transportation Collaboration Forum (GTCF) to review all the road, rail, truck and marine transportation issues within the area it serves. A July 14 memo from the Township engineering division to council said Port Metro told engineering staff it is not planning to study the impact of the increased train traffic on the many at-grade rail crossings within the Township. The memo called the GTCF “inadequate to effectively examine and address the municipal concerns” because it will not focus on the impact of increased rail traffic resulting from terminal 2.

Jada sings out against bullying By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

A 14-year-old singing sensation, Jada McKenzie-Moore, is using her voice to stand up for her best friend. Jada, a Langley native, will be in the semi-finals at the PNE Star Showdown on Sunday, Aug. 17 — in a competition that started with around 300 hopefuls. But when Jada takes the stage, she plans on dedicating the song ‘Titanium’ to her best friend Trinity, who has a mild form of autism and was bullied this past school year. “I wanted Trinity to have her own song so she could be empowered,” said Jada. “She loves it and is so excited when I sing that song.” The lyrics are powerful. The chorus goes like this: You shoot me down but I won’t fall. I am titanium. “The words of this song are perfect for Trinity or anybody who has been bullied.” Trinity couldn’t agree more and is excited to be at the PNE for Jada’s performance. “It’s very inspirational for those of us who have faced bullies,” said Trinity. For Trinity, who was bullied quite badly last year, she sums up the experience in two words. “Bullying sucks,” she said. Jada first dedicated the song to Trinity when she won the BC Junior Talent Search finals at the Cloverdale Rodeo in May, singing her jaw-dropping, strippeddown acoustic version of David Guetta’s song ‘Titanium.’ Hitting octaves and range only heard in the voices of a few like Mariah Carey, Jada hopes her version of the song strikes a chord both with the audience and judges.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Jada McKenzie-Moore and best friend Trinity. Jada and Trinity met while attending Betty Gilbert Middle School together two years ago. The two hit it off and became fast friends. “When Trinity was younger, we would pray together, hoping she would find friendship. It was a difficult time and Trinity was alone a lot and had trouble making friends,” said mom Stacy. “When Jada and Trinity found each other, they just had this amazing bond. Their friendship is so genuine.” But when Jada moved away to Vancouver last August, Trinity started getting picked on and bullied at school. “She has experienced horrible bullying this year. These girls threw plants in her hair and when she was walking from school these younger girls were picking on her,” said Jada. Trinity has a mild form of Asperger’s Syndrome. “I want to say to those who bully, treat people how you yourself want to be treated,” said Jada. To Trinity, or anyone being

bullied, she said “be strong.” Like the song Titanium says. Stacy said for Jada to use her voice to stand up for Trinity, is both a gift and a message. “I think it shames the bullies and it also shows Trinity that she really matters.” Trinity can’t wait to cheer on Jada on Sunday. To the bullies in her life, Trinity said they must feel inadequate, to have to pick on someone else. “Do you think your confidence level will go up trying to knock someone down? It won’t. You will feel worse. You must have very low confidence,” she said. Stacy said that once the community knew Trinity was being picked on, they rallied around her. But the school’s hands were tied when it came to helping, she said. “She is so harmless and sweet, so it really bothered people that she was bullied,” said her mom. The competition at the PNE is fierce, now that Jada is in the

youth category of ages 13 to 18. If she does win the cash and the title, she plans to donate money from her win to the Autism Canada Foundation. Langleyites might recognize Jada as the anthem singer at the Vancouver Stealth games last year at the Langley Events Centre. For singing O Canada, she had some lessons from Mr. O Canada himself, Mark Donnelly, who sings at Vancouver Canucks games. “He taught me a lot,” she said. Jada’s singing career has been busy, playing the White Rock Sea Festival recently and the Calgary Stampede earlier, along with many other performances. She has won seven contests in three months. With a full itinerary this summer, she is taking a break from performing with hopes to cut a song or make an album this fall. Her dream is to get a hit song and become popular enough that she can do concerts and go on tour. “With a pink tour bus, it has to be pink,” said Jada. “My mom is the driver and Trinity is coming too.” When asked if Trinity would like to go on tour with Jada, her response was, “oh my goodness yes.” Jada’s mom Jennifer Proulx said she is pretty proud of her daughter’s stand against bullies and in support of Trinity. “Trinity’s mom and I tear up when we see them together. They have such a beautiful relationship,” said Proulx. The friends got together in Langley last weekend, before the PNE semi-finals this Sunday. Over the past few weeks, the Fire Department has responded to numerous complaints regarding smoke, which can cause health problems such as burning eyes, runny nose, and illnesses such as bronchitis. Fine particles in smoke can also aggravate chronic heart and lung diseases. As well, the fire danger in Langley has been rated high by Metro Vancouver. There is zero tolerance for outdoor burning and violators may be ticketed. Cooking is only permitted on Canadian Gas Association (CGA) approved barbecues or briquette barbecues. Wood burning or solid fuel appliances are not allowed. Outdoor burning is only allowed for yard and garden clean-up twice a year, during burning season in September and April, weather permitting. Summer Maintenance of Rural Boulevards and Ditches

Temporary Road Closure: Corner of 28 Avenue and 276 Street

The Township of Langley currently utilizes three full-time and one seasonal roadside grass mowers for ditch mowing. This equipment has predetermined routes, or an assigned area to follow. Should the equipment be pulled away to do a specific request it only lengthens the time it takes to fully complete all the rural boulevards and ditches.

A temporary road closure of 28 Avenue at 276 Street will be in effect Monday, August 18 from 8:00 to 4:30pm. The closure is required for the disconnection of an old water service at the Aldergrove Water Treatment Plant. A detour route is noted below.

If you have a request for mowing or brushwacking, we ask that you be patient as we try to fit the work schedule in as efficiently as possible.

FRASER HWY

The Township, along with Provincial and Federal agencies, have classified the open channel water systems into three categories: Class A ditches are fish bearing; Class B ditches are fish habitat. Both of these categories require formal approval before any work can be completed. Class C ditches are deemed to have no fish or fish habitat issues whatsoever and require notification only for work to take place.

Japanese Knotweed Roadside Control Strategy Japanese Knotweed is an invasive species whose root system has the potential to ruin home foundations, roads, parking lots, sewerage, and water main infrastructure. The Township of Langley is working to eliminate the threat of this invasive plant. You may see markers along various roads identifying where Japanese Knotweed is located. Do not remove the plants or mow these areas. Improper removal of the plant could result in the plant reproducing rapidly or spreading further.

As of June 1, 2014, this permit can only be obtained from the Township’s Operations Centre, located at 4700 - 224 Street.

The Roads Department is spraying a mild herbicide to control the Japanese Knotweed. The removal process will take several treatments and inspections throughout the year. After the roots are killed, the plant stock will be removed and discarded safely.

By GARY AHUJA Aldergrove Star

It began as a simple website two years ago. “Just a place to post workouts and recipes and little motivational things,” explained Hailey Van Dyk. “We just thought it would be our friends.” Van Dyk collaborated with Courtney Burt on the website, Run Like A Girl. The pair graduated from R.E. Mountain Secondary a year apart — the 25-year-old Burt in 2006 and the 24-year-old Van Dyk in 2007 — but they weren’t friends in high school. They reconnected a few years later, through Facebook, when Van Dyk saw pictures of Burt running and asked to join her as a running partner. Friendship and a website — which was launched on Aug. 5 two years ago — followed. The website’s popularity dramatically increased after a popular North Vancouver clothing company, Arc’teryx, shared one of Run Like A Girl’s photos. “Just from that, we exploded overnight,” Van Dyk said. “It was crazy. We went international.” The website’s mission is to “inspire others to embrace fitness and health as a holistic lifestyle of the body, mind and soul.” A third partner, Dayna Egyed, joined the pair in their endeavor soon after. The 38-year-old, who grew up

Run Like A Girl works to not only promote a healthy and active lifestyle, but to also encourage others to give back to the community. “Changing the world is hard on your own, so we enable our community to help us, by offering multiple ways to raise awareness and build

support for the millions of people in need around the world,” the website reads. They have done three fundraisers. The biggest was selling T-shirts they had made to support the bombing victims of the 2013 Boston Marathon. Those shirts raised $10,000 and the money was donated to the victims of that attack. They have also held two 5-km and 10-km races in Fort Langley, raising $3,500 and $3,000, respectively, in

the fight against breast cancer and childhood brain cancer. The races allow people from around the world to take part. “We do offer an option for our local runners and then on the same day, our virtual runners from around the world also run,” Burt explained. Each out-of-town participant receives a racing bib, medal and T-shirt before they begin. Many times the runners then send a photo to the website.

Some of the participating runners have come from all across Canada, the United States, New Zealand and even a few women from a military base in Afghanistan. The feedback the Run Like A Girl organizers have received keeps them going. “Sometimes we don’t feel we are helping very much, but then we get all these messages and realize we are and it is a great feeling,” Egyed said. Burt said the biggest satisfaction is knowing they are helping others. “There is satisfaction in knowing we are raising money and donating it for a very good cause,” she said. “And this is providing an opportunity for people to give back to their community.” They are already planning their next event, which will be a run in Fort Langley on Oct. 5 in support of breast cancer research. They are also planning a sevenday adventure camp in November in Costa Rica from Nov. 9 to 15. The camp is focused on getting people outdoors and active, perhaps even trying some new things. This particular camp will feature things like trail running, yoga and repelling canyons and waterfalls. Every night, the campers will debrief about the day, such as what they learned, what they shared and what they experienced. In addition, the participants will also go to one of the small towns nearby and so some humanitarian work.

Ryan Jones rides to Kelowna by bike — in one day Aldergrove Star

Ryan Jones travelled to Kelowna last Thursday, on a bicycle. The Langley man began his ride at 3 a.m. at the Langley Hospice Society office on 48 Avenue, and arrived in the Okanagan city in the evening, after cycling 378 kilometres in one day. He took on the ambitious ride to raise funds for Langley Hospice Society. Jones did so in memory of his wife Andrea’s mother, Laurie Lemon, who died June 5, 2012. Because of the excellent care and treatment she received from Langley Hospice Society when SUBMITTED PHOTO she was dying of cancer, the couRyan Jones and Andrea Lemon sit on the bench in Fort Langley at the entrance to ple (who were married on July Bedford Landing that they purchased in memory of her mother, Laurie Ann Lemon. 26) came up with the Lemon Jones cycled to Kelowna on Thursday to remember her, and raise funds for Langley Love Ride. Jones grew up in Aldergrove Hospice Society.

and Lemon is from Langley. He first became involved in raising funds to fight cancer after his father battled cancer. They took part together in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. He and Lemon had known of each other, and connected via Facebook, and when they met in person, he was wearing his ride to Conquer Cancer jersey. They found they had a great deal in common and after getting together, decided they would like to do something for the hospice society. While planning their wedding, Lemon also planned the ride. They have a web page with further details, and contributions can be made on the website. It can be found at http:// www.lemonloveride.tumblr. com/. Lemon also organized sup-

port vehicles, rest break locations and all the myriad of details that go into an event of this type. She planned to ride the final 50 to 100 kilometres with Jones. He has been doing extensive training for the ride, but still admits it will be quite a challenge, given the hills he will have to climb on both the Coquihalla and Okanagan Connector highways. He had to pedal uphill for over 10,000 feet (almost three kilometres) — the equivalent of climbing a mountain. As of a week ago, the couple had exceeded their fundraising goal of $10,000 by more than $3,000, and publicity since that time has boosted the drive even further. “We wanted to do something to give back,” he said. “After visiting the hospice, I knew I was doing the right thing.”

‘Concrete Hero’ Kyle Summers runs for family Aldergrove Star

For Kyle Summers, Christmas time conjures up difficult memories. Four years ago on Christmas Day, Kyle’s mother died of lung cancer. One day later, his great grandmother passed away from colon cancer. Although shocked and saddened, Kyle used his experience as a lesson

to take control of his life and seek experiences outside of his personal boundaries. One of these experiences is Concrete Hero, a nine-kilometre urban obstacle challenge through the streets of Vancouver that benefits the BC Cancer Foundation. For Kyle the event represents the unity of committed, dedicated

individuals working to rid the world of cancer. It is a cause very close to Kyle’s heart. Along with his mother and great grandmother, his childhood friend died of the disease and his great aunt is a survivor. Flippers deliver medal haul Aldergrove Star

The weather was not the only thing sizzling as the Langley Flippers Swim Club were busy winning medals, breaking club records and setting personal bests. The Flippers were competing at the B.C. Summer Swimming Association’s Fraser Valley regional championships, which were held over the B.C. Day long weekend in Mission. Leading the way was Will Karpan, who won a gold and three silver — with three club records — in Division 6 competition. Karpan won gold in the 100m breastroke and was second in the 200m IM, 100m butterfly and 50m butterfly. He also teamed up with Ben Cramer, Josh Hu and Nick Todd to win bronze in the Division 7 200m freestyle event. Other Flippers to find the podium included: Aidyn Hum (Div. 3) silver in the 50m butterfly and bronze in the 50m backstroke. Sophie Buie (Girls O Category 1) silver in the 50m freestyle, 100m IM, 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle. Meghan Hum (Div. 6) bronze in the 50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 50m

backstroke and silver in the 100m freestyle. The Div. 7 girls relay team of Hannah Bistritz, Meghan Cheung, Meghan Hum and Kelsey Hum won gold in the 200m freestyle and bronze in the 200m medley relay. And the Div. 3 ream of Rose Esplen, Natalie Hu, Aidyn Hum and Taya McCartney won bronze in the 200m freestyle relay. The swimmers now prepare for the B.C. provincial swimming championships, which take place in Kamloops Aug. 11 to 17.

The regular season was all about preparation and it paid off with a provincial championship title. The last two seasons, the coaching staff of the Langley Xtreme senior B women’s team has compiled a schedule that saw them play up against more A-level teams. “So when we get seeded for provincials, because the girls are playing that much harder because they are playing A team, it just transfers over,” explained Kerry Niven, who has coached this particular group of players for the past four seasons. Niven said the team is then able to use the experience gained from playing a higher level competition to their advantage. And all of that paid off earlier this month, as the Xtreme captured the senior B women’s title at Softball City. The championships were held Aug. 1 to 4 at Softball City in Surrey. The title did not come out of the blue, either, as the Xtreme entered three tournaments — including provincials — and won a

pair of gold medals and a silver. “There was definitely some talent and there was an expectation to perform and to win,” he said. The Langley squad, made up of women between the ages of 22 and 25, went 3-0 in the round robin and then beat the Fleetwood Force Elite 13-6 in the quarter-finals. They beat the New Westminster Riot twice to take the title, winning 8-1 in the semifinals and 7-3 in the finals. In the finals — against a team they had mercied during round robin play — the Xtreme scored a pair of runs in the second, singles in third, fourth and fifth, and two more in the sixth. “I think when the Riot scored those three runs, the girls decided to finish things off and finished the game off strong,” Niven said. The team is made up of: Christina Blouin, Theresa Blouin, Amanda Dyck, Leah Dyck, Emily Fournier, Stacey Fournier, Breanna Guy, Kacy Hannesson, Jesica Hodge, Cody Irwin, Jenna McArthur, Heather Mitchell, Lara Nicoll, Laurie-May Quon and Amanda Wiebe. The coaches are Tracey Dyck and Kerry Niven.

Five from Langley on Team BC Aldergrove Star

Five players from Langley have been named to Team B.C’s Prospects roster. The team is made up of top players ages 16 and under. Twin brothers Yi-An and Yi-Fan Pan, Brodan Bydeweg,

Markus Gregson and Ethan Kano-MacGregor will represent the province in Centralia, Wash. at the Pacific Northwest Championship. The tournament runs Aug. 14 to 17 The Pan brothers, Bydeweg and Gregoson play for the

Langley Junior Blaze program while Kano-MacGregor played at the U18 Premier level with the Abbotsford Cardinals this past season. The Blaze’s Jesse Unger and Matthew Poirier are alternates on the team.

Fresh at the Aldergrove Farmers Market

‘Family Four’ marks century Aldergrove Star

HARRY HUNT PHOTO

The “Veggie Patch Farm and eight other producers of vegetables, honey, crafts, wine and more have started the Aldergrove Farmers’ Market, held every Saturday morning in the parking lot of the Alder Inn Hotel.

This weekend, the Family Four Centennial Celebration Art Show will honour the 100th anniversary of the Sloggett farm in Bradner. The Sloggett family purchased the land in Bradner when the logging was finished, then referred to as a stump farm. For 100 years they have worked this land. In the early years it supplied their food; cows for milk products, beef, chickens, pigs and wild game for meat and always a huge garden for vegetables, fruit and flowers. When Fred Sloggett began a trucking business hauling Langley and Abbotsford milk to the dairy his wife Marie continued with the farming on a smaller scale. She was a regular exhibi-

GENERAL MANAGER - One-year contract

7

OBITUARIES Bolton, Bernadine Elsie (nee Bowyer) March 6, 1926 ~ March 16, 2014

Bernie passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 16, 2014 after a long illness. Devoted wife and partner, proud mother and adoring grandmother, she is survived by Gordon, her dedicated husband of 68 years, by Douglas and Russell, her grateful children, and by Alexis and Ian, her precious grandchildren in whom Bernie will live on and continue to make the world more beautiful. She also leaves behind scores of extended family and dear friends. Bernie reminded us all by example of how noble it is to be ever gentle, kind and generous. Born in Detroit, she moved to Winnipeg as a child where she later met and then married Gord after he returned from the war. After a busy and happy life raising their family, she and Gord finally made the move to Vancouver in 1970 where they had many good years together. A friend and protector to all creatures great and small, Bernie touched every child she met with the smile in her eyes, and made them all feel most special. Her sense of humour was infectious... she could always make you laugh and feel good. A very special thank you to her caregivers of several years at Jackman Manor in Aldergrove, B.C., who cared for her as though she was their own. At Bernie’s request, there will be no service, and in lieu of flowers, donations to the SPCA would be appreciated as animals were always a great love in her life. Bernie will be forever missed and fondly remembered.
