from the Creston Valley Gleaners, and when that money was spent on studies and plans, none of us wanted to be the one to go back to the Gleaners and tell them we had failed.”

Creston town council likes the idea of conducting a “business walk” to identify potential barriers to business within the community and to enhance community engagement. But it won’t happen in 2014, was the consensus at the Aug. 5 committee of the whole meeting. “I’m concerned that there isn’t enough time to do it this year without making it look like an election thing,” Mayor Ron Toyota said. “By possibly making this look political, it could end up not helping at all.” The business walk concept has been on the table since Toyota, Coun. Jerry Schmalz and town manager Lou Varela attended an economic development workshop in Castlegar last year. Varela explained in a report to council that the concept, tested in the Central Okanagan, involves civic and business leaders visiting businesses and asking three questions: “How is business?” “What do you like doing most about doing business in the area?” and “What can be done to make your business thrive?”

About 40 local residents, committee members and dignitaries gathered at an empty 25th Avenue South lot on Tuesday morning to celebrate the impending con-

struction of a six-unit affordable rental housing development. “This day seems like it’s been a long time coming,” said Heather More, who chairs the Creston Valley Community Housing Society (CVCHS). “We began with a $25,000 donation

Registration is open to all players born from 1994-1998, while younger players will be considered on an individual basis. “With considerable roster turnover from last season’s team, this year’s main camp will be a great opportunity for potential players to

impress our staff and earn a place with our organization,” said Thunder Cats head coach and general manager Jeff Dubois. “We’re expecting to see new faces at all positions. They released their second full-length album, Worry, in June to follow up 2011’s The Last Best West, which received favourable reviews and extensive radio airtime across North America. “In the unlikely event that Buffalo Tom and Dinosaur Jr. were to have a love child, the resulting offspring would undoubtedly sound like Nick Faye,” said Thompson Rivers University’s Omega student newspaper. Singer-songwriter Nash combines an honest insight into a young woman’s old soul with a powerful, moving voice. Raised in rural Saskatchewan, her lyrics carry a prairie imagery and her vocals have the character of a familiar gravel road. “If a thunderstorm had a voice, it would sound like Megan Nash,” said Craig Lederhouse on CBC Radio Saskatchewan. Tickets are $12 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books, Buffalo Trails Coffee House and Black Bear Books, and $15 ($7 for teens) at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8.

Erickson church hosts pickers’ lunch BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Nearly 350 visiting fruit pickers experienced the Creston Valley’s generosity on Aug. 6 when they enjoyed a free lunch at the Erickson Covenant Church for the second consecutive year. The whole community got involved as volunteers served the visiting work-

ers food donated by other churches and individuals. “It’s just community-loving people,” said Erickson church member Becky Coons, who started the event last year. The pickers were shocked, she said, when they were invited in 2013—and the organizers were, as well, when 300 showed up instead of the expected 100. “They’ve never had this anywhere,” Coons said. “The fact that there are no

strings attached is a big deal to them.” Last year, diners were giving her and other volunteers “huge thank yous,” even weeks after the event, which Coons plans to host on the first Wednesday of each August. “I moved here four years ago, and hated the way people talked about the pickers,” she said. “Without the pickers, we would have no industry. We depend on those people.”

From page 1 The small society with about 10 active members persisted, working closely with BC Housing, the Town of Creston, Columbia Basin Trust and the federal and provincial governments to raise funds. The complex at 215 25th Ave. S. will contain four three-bedroom and two two-bedroom units, conveniently located near transit, grocery stores, commercial services, Prince Charles Secondary School and green spaces. A low profile design will allow it to blend in with neighbouring residences. Construction is scheduled to be complete by late 2015. “Community events are always exciting, but even more so when it’s a groundbreaking,” Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks said at the ceremony. “Projects like this bring hope and real solutions to families living on low incomes. There is no place like home and in the near future six families will

be able to acknowledge this firsthand. Our government is proud of our investment that will help families achieve affordable housing here in Creston.” “This groundbreaking today represents an important step forward in addressing the lack of family-focused affordable housing in the Town of Creston,” More said. “The families that live here in the future will have a better chance at engaging their community, and lead more fulfilling lives. I’m honoured to be one of the many people who’ve worked so hard to bring the vision of the Creston Valley Community Housing Society to life.” The governments of B.C. and Canada provided a combined $400,000 through the Affordable Rental Housing Initiative under the Canada-B.C. Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing 20112014, which was recently extended until 2019. Columbia Basin Trust contributed $400,000. The government of B.C. also arranged nearly $400,000 in long-term financing for the project. CVCHS is providing $26,000 in equity and working to secure an additional $100,000 in grants or

project savings. It will also own and operate the building. In addition to Wilks, also participating in the formal ceremony were Heather Smith, constituency assistant for MLA Bill Bennett, who was unable to attend; Creston Mayor Ron Toyota; Columbia Basin trust planning and development manager Aimee Ambrosone; Alex Nilsson, a founding CVCHS member; Gleaners president Forch (Joe) Sandre; and Zea Freisen, a single mother of two who moved to Creston to establish her acupuncture business. Freisen spoke about her own experience in finding suitable, affordable rental housing, and congratulated the CVCHS on its efforts to create affordable rental space in Creston.

Gun smuggler pleads guilty LTD

Randon Woolsey Lewis pled guilty to firearms smuggling in Creston Law Courts on July 21, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said in a press release on Monday. A year earlier, on July 21, 2013, Lewis — who was entering Canada from the U.S., but whose nationality was not specified — did not declare any weapons when crossing through the Kingsgate port of entry, south of Yahk, but following a search of his vehicle, border services officers seized three unloaded handguns, one Taser and Taser cartridges. “One handgun was found behind the driver’s seat, and the two other handguns, along with ammunition, were found in the box of the truck,” said the CBSA release. “The Taser was found in the console above the rear-view mirror, and the Taser cartridges were found in the centre console.” Lewis, 63, pled guilty to one count of smuggling under the Customs Act and one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code. His sentence was a fine of $5,000 and a victim surcharge of $750. Also, the firearms, weapons and Taser cartridges were seized by CBSA with no terms of release, and the vehicle was seized and released upon payment of a $3,500 penalty. The day Lewis appeared in court, the CBSA arrested two travellers for smuggling firearms at the Osoyoos and Cascade ports of entry.

At the Osoyoos crossing, officers seized a U.S. resident’s .45-calibre handgun during a secondary examination. He was charged with one count of smuggling under the Customs Act, one count of possessing a restricted firearm and one count of possessing a loaded firearm under the Criminal Code of Canada. He was released on $2,000 bail and will appear in Penticton Provincial Court on Aug. 13. At the Cascade crossing near Christina Lake, officers found two loaded handguns and five magazines under the sleeping bed of a travel trailer during a vehicle examination. The firearms, ammunition and the vehicle were seized, the traveller was arrested and the CBSA’s criminal investigations sec-

A total of 22 firearms were seized (eight prohibited, 10 restricted and four non-restricted). Eight occurred at Osoyoos, and 15 took place from May 1 through July 22.

Committee Briefs •The committee recommended that an invitation from the minister of agriculture to provide feedback on potential amendments to the Agricultural Land Commission Act be received for information. Council has requested a meeting with the minister at this fall’s Union of BC Municipalities convention. Coun. Tanya Wall said she met with the minister of agriculture on his recent visit to Creston, where he also met with local farmers. •A lengthy discussion took place about the property clean-up bylaw. Responding to Varela’s request for direction about how much staff time and energy should be committed to the issue, Coun. Judy Gadicke said, “We need an unsightly premises bylaw. I think the people want one — it’s the culture of our town. But if a bylaw is to be enforceable it has to be simple and clear.” Coun. Scott Veitch said if a bylaw is to be effective “we need to look after our own backyard. And I wonder if nine inches of quack grass is worse than an empty and uncared-for building on Canyon Street?” Creston Fire Rescue Chief Mike Moore, who is also involved with bylaw enforcement, said the current bylaw needs to be revisited and clarified. The issue was referred to staff for a report after Varela said, “We should undertake a review in response to concerns we are hearing from the public.”

Creston woman killed in collision in Yahk

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston RCMP responded to 102 calls for service from Aug. 4-10, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on a busy Monday afternoon. Police were coping with heavy traffic and occasionally erratic drivers heading home from the Shambhala music festival when they were called to a head-on crash on Highway 3 in Yahk. One fatality, a 57-year-old Creston woman, was reported, and ambulance, police and highways personnel, as well as a coroner, attended the scene in the early afternoon. An RCMP crash scene analyst was flown in from Vernon. “The collision occurred when an older model Nissan Sentra, which was driven by the deceased and travelling southbound, crossed the double solid centre line into the path of a northbound, newer model Ford four-door station wagon,” said a press release by Sgt. Don Erichsen of East Kootenay Traffic Services. “The collision occurred fully in the northbound lane of travel.” The female driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while her male travelling companion was taken to hospital by air ambulance with undisclosed injuries. The four travellers in the northbound Ford were uninjured. The name of the deceased has not been released, and the investigation continues.

Savings for the future are taxes.” They have driven down tax negligible, certainly if compared to rates, especially for high earners and Norway, a rare petro-state that actualcorporations, and then thrown up ly doesn’t give away its resources and

also doesn’t fritter away its share. The problem with petro-states is that they tend to operate on the assumption that economic benefits should only accrue to those who are around when resource is exploited. There is an odd assumption that future generations aren’t entitled to benefit, either financially from a share of the resource sales, or from a healthier environment that might come from a slower, more thoughtful development plan. It was, ironically, Peter Lougheed that came up with the latter scheme several years before he died. The same Peter Lougheed who led the Progressive Conservatives to power more than four decades ago. It was an idea doomed to failure. How to tell a large portion of your population that you are going to slow down development and endanger their lucrative jobs? How to walk away from large chunks of easy money that rolls in, even from royalties and taxes that are too low? How to tell global corporations who pour money into your campaign coffers that their investments and profits are going to be limited? And how to make a decision that might affect your own political longevity, your own shot to fly around the world in mostly empty planes, the perk that caused the downfall of Allison Redford? I used to joke with Albertans who defended Ralph Klein’s massive incompetence. “You do know that Ralph didn’t actually put that oil into the ground?” I often asked. We are headed down a slippery slope when we buy into the promise of petroleum riches, one that you and I are unlikely to get much benefit from. But by doing so we will create a much dimmer future for those who follow. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

Not stealing encourages generosity

The precept, “Do not steal,” expresses the Zen student’s commitment to live from a generous heart rather than from a self-centred mind. It refers to not taking anything that belongs to someone else without first getting their permission, and it includes acquiring money and things through deception. Stealing results from wanting something that we think we don’t already have, and it is characterized by grasping. When we see the world as separate from ourselves there will always be something we want but don’t have, and therefore, we will always feel dissatisfied. It is this dissatisfaction that propels us into wanting and taking. The state of not stealing, or not having a thought of getting something for ourselves at the cost of others, is characterized by contentment. Refraining from stealing is the practice of generosity. Giving, being the opposite of taking, is an antidote for stealing and grasping. When we practice generosity we develop a warm-hearted readiness to give, which is indicative of a mind that is free from attachment. Readiness to give has a lot to do with flexibility, and with the ability to let go of our train of thought so we can transcend

rigid thinking. All productive labour is fundamentally giving. When we tend the garden or pick up garbage on a hiking path, we give our lives to others. Generosity is the basic willingness to

change. When we don’t give, when we hold back or hold on, we impoverish ourselves. But a poor-spirited person cannot become rich by taking another’s possessions. In the same way, someone who is rich-spirited cannot become poor through being deprived of possessions by a thief. To practice with not taking what is not given, we look at the mind of attachment, or the mind of accumulation, and get to know how it controls us. Whether the attachment is to material possessions, to states of mind or experiences, or to what we hold onto as our identity, it is a burden, and its antidote is giving. When

we learn to give generously, we realize that our entire life is a form of giving. Instead of stealing time from ourselves by getting stuck in front of a television or a computer screen, we can be generous to ourselves by taking a walk or visiting a friend or a lonely neighbour. Our brains are always in survival mode. We look for ways to protect ourselves from discomfort and false feelings of deprivation. This grasping mind is difficult to transform. In the beginning, it must be can only be changed through giving. Stealing harms us personally and it harms our community. Giving fosters peace and harmony in both our community and in ourselves. Suggested practice: One way to practice with this precept is to look at your state of mind: do you find an underlying quality of dissatisfaction and wanting, or is it characterized by contentment? For the next two weeks, practice with not stealing by acting on every impulse of generosity that spontaneously arises in your heart. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Creston’s ZenWords Zen Centre. For more information, she can be reached at 250-428-6500.

MLA offers kudos to CVCHS To the Editor: Congratulations to the Creston Valley Community Housing Society on breaking ground for a new affordable housing in Creston. The volunteers of the CVCHS have worked tirelessly to secure the resources from government and community funders to make this project a reality. The construction of new affordable housing has an incredibly positive impact on the community. The construction creates jobs and the housing provides safe affordable homes for many years into the future. Although the Liberal government decided to not invite me to the groundbreaking celebration, let’s not let that exclusion overshadow the great work done by our community. Many have told me that the partisanship displayed by the Liberal government disappointed them. I agree that it is disrespectful and most certainly unnecessary, and I would like to thank the volunteers of the CVCHS for warmly inviting me after hearing of the government’s deliberate exclusion. Your thoughtfulness is an indication of why you have had success in

creating homes for low-income families. Again, congratulations and thank you to the CVCHS. Your volunteer efforts are bringing tremendous benefit to the Creston Valley. Michelle Mungall Nelson-Creston MLA

Biz owner embarrasses senior To the Editor: On July 30, I went into a local retail store and made a large purchase but when I was at the till I suddenly and urgently had to use a washroom. I asked if there was one on the premises and the employee replied there was but it was for staff only. She apologized profusely. I told her that it was an emergency, that I had to use a washroom without delay. She went to ask the owner, who emerged from her office, waggling her finger at me and advising me that she would let me use it just this one time. She led me to the washroom berating me the whole way. I was embarrassed that I even had to ask to use the washroom but felt that she was trying to intimidate and embarrass me even more. She only succeeded in

making me very angry at the insult. On my way out, I told the owner that I would never ever shop in her establishment again and that I hadn’t had a finger waggled at me in more than 40 years! She said she was sorry and that she only waggled it once, as if that was mitigation. She went on to tell me that it was for insurance reasons because someone might slip and fall in the bathroom, which I feel is a pile of hogwash! There could have been more chance of slippage had I not been able to use the facilities — if you get my drift! She also advised me that she didn’t want people in amongst the stock in the back for security reasons, sort of like calling me a possible thief on top of everything else. This letter is written to let businesses know that a bit of simple kindness goes a long way. Senior people, young people with children — everyone has times when they have to use facilities, and quickly. It certainly creates a good feeling when a shop owner cares for their customers’ comfort. If you want us to shop locally, you have to treat us with respect and in a welcoming manner. You know who you are, but I think there is a lesson here for all proprietors. The event would have been unremarkable had you exercised some common sense and I would have been grateful and would have continued to use your store. Sheila Barling Creston

Try to see good in others

When you look at people, you instantly have thoughts on what kind of person they are. It’s instinct. It’s just how the world goes round and round. I would believe that when people see me, they would think that I was they quiet, shy girl who gets excellent grades and never puts one toe out of line, that I do my homework assignments the night they’re assigned. That’s not necessarily untrue. I’ve always tried hard and it’s hard for me to see why others don’t. In my opinion, I feel that school and learning are the only way I can achieve accomplishments in my life, personally. Others can achieve greatness without doing well in school, but learning would be the way for me. I’ve always dreamed about going to the school of my choice and doing what I want to do. That’s technically what life is. Going out and doing things you want to do, while facing your fears. That’s where impressions come in. When you would see me, you would see a life of solidarity and quiet. But in my head, it’s not like that at all. I see skydiving and hiking and adventure. Of course, I love to stick my nose in a book every once in a while because how people stereotype me isn’t exactly wrong, but I also love to do things more than that. I want to travel to London and Orlando and Rio de Janeiro. I want to meet my idols, not just read about them in a book. Because that’s my life. Although stereotypes can be correct, that stereotype of you can also lead you into getting a “label”.

Don’t try to label someone negatively. Everyone has faults, but you should try not to see those. Also look and realize that even though they don’t look like a positively good person, there’s always at least one good thing about someone. Negative labels are shown as though you’re judging them, and that is not a good thing, although the first thing you see sometimes is bad. Dirty Beds putting new spin on fresh food

T

here’s nothing quite like the flavour of freshly harvested vegetables — and if you’ve grown them yourself, taking a bite might even bring a tear to your eye. “The other night I had a meal that almost made me cry,” said Jessie King, co-owner of Crawford Bay’s Dirty Beds Story and Produce. “It was so infinitely photo by delicious.” Her dinner included a salad Brian of her own tomatoes, garlic, Lawrence basil and cucumbers, with some feta added, as well as grilled patty pan and crookneck squashes. That’s just a small sampling of what she and co-owner Elisa Rose grow, with peas, tomatoes, potatoes, beans, carrots, beets, kohlrabi, onions, rutabagas, herbs, kale, collards and brussels sprouts taking root this summer. Rather than dealing with one large garden, their produce is grown in five beds in and around Crawford Bay. “Part of it is because land is so expensive that young people can’t afford it,” said King, who added that setting up a garden isn’t cheap, either; on this scale, extensive irrigations systems and many square meteres of weed-reducing black plastic are vital. Their operation is reminiscent of SPIN (small plot intensive) gardening, with the notable difference that some of their gardening isn’t that intense. SPIN gardens are usually devoted to produce with a high turnover rate, such as lettuce, whereas Dirty Beds grows things like squash, which require space and a longer growing season. It’s well suited to one of their gardens, which uses concentric circles (with a few spirals) instead of rows, allowing for better companion planting and more space. “Squash can ramble and take over — which it’s doing quite well at,” said King. Although growing vegetables on this scale is new to King, gardening itself isn’t — she grew up in Fernie and Salmon Arm, and had a small garden in her backyard as a teenager. But it was

Jessie King, co-owner of Crawford Bay's Dirty Beds Produce, in the circle garden on Crawford Creek Road.

a solo cycling trip through the Slocan Valley six years ago that started her on the course that led to Dirty Beds. “I thought, ‘This place really resonates with me,’ ” said King, who was living in Victoria at the time. She got a job as a teacher at Crawford Bay Elementary-Secondary School (CBESS), and after teaching for two years, took a two-year leave of absence, visiting Quebec and travelling across the country as a WWOF (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) volunteer. Last year, before returning to teach at CBESS, she did two farm apprenticeships. “I got my hands more in the dirt than in books, and I loved it,” she said. She appreciates the opportunity to pass on her knowledge. One of the Dirty Beds gardens is located at CBESS, and the school buys some of its produce for its kitchen. And while King already teaches a wide ranges of subjects — last year’s included literacy/numeracy for kindergarten-Grade 1, and Grade 11 social studies — she’s adding some education involving about 200 pounds of tomatoes in the first semester.

“The kids will learn to make salsa and to can,” she said. “They’ll get some garden-to-plate experience in a small way.” And in February, she’ll begin teaching a semester-long course in growing food to 17 students from inside and outside the region, in which they can earn high school credit. This being King and Rose’s first year in the gardening business, they’re still absorbing all they can about it, networking with other farmers at the Nelson Downtown Local Market on Wednesdays, and making good use of other contacts. “The farmers I’ve worked with in the past have been wonderful mentors,” said King. “They’re so excited that I’ve taken this on.” “We’re not following any predetermined or learned structure of doing this; both of us have really been winging it from the start,” said Rose. “We don't have a lot of gardening education, so we are learning as we go and making things up as we go along, so the process is very organic (just like the food).”

Customers on the East Shore are enjoying the produce they offer at the Crawford Bay Sunday Market — with things like carrots selling out within 10 minutes — as well as on the menus of Boccalino and Black Salt Café. “We also offer, I hope, the idea that sustainability within this very special community is possible, and it can, is and will continue to happen when people get together and contribute their different talents, strengths, creativity and hard work towards a common goal, for the good of the whole,” said Rose. By growing fresh produce, Dirty Beds is continuing an East Shore tradition — the area used to be dotted with orchards, and in the 1990s, a resident offered weekly vegetable boxes through a community supported agriculture program — and that might just encourage others to grow their own food. “I have this really strong passion for social and environmental justice, and I feel like more of us as a society need to get our hands in the dirt,” said King. which created “a very productive Kokanee fishery in the 1960s and 1970s,” according to www.syilx.org. But those benefits didn’t last. “They thought they would be beneficial to the kokanee, but it turned out they competed,” Jeffery said. And more recently, kokanee in a few Kootenay Lake spawning channels were found to be infected with the infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV), with spawning numbers dropping to about 200,000 in 2013, the lowest since records began to be kept in the 1960s. “We’re concerned because kokanee are not only a sport fish, they’re a keystone species in the whole Kootenay Lake food web,” Ministry of Forest, Lands and Resource Operations senior fisheries biologist Jeff Burrows told the Nelson Star in January. “So many animals rely on Kokanee: bears, osprey, even mallard ducks eat the eggs. They’re important.” Research into the virus is ongoing, but it provides the EFHS with a good reason to keep working toward its goal of restoring watershed to their natural state and start restocking the population. The group isn’t yet certified with Pacific Streamkeepers, but already has

In many streams and creeks along Kootenay Lake’s East Shore, spawning kokanee salmon have disappeared completely in recent years, but a new society is aiming to change that. With the goal of remediating the tributaries that spill into Kootenay Lake, members of the Eastshore Freshwater Habitat Society (EFHS) have been training this summer through the Pacific Streamkeepers Federation, which offers education and support to similar groups. “This is about stream stewardship, basically trying to take care of something you don’t own,” said Gerry Nellestijn, co-ordinator of the Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society, at a Riondel training session last week. “People are becoming aware of the need to help steward streams. It’s not a government responsibility, it’s a community responsibility.” The EFHS has over 160 members, about 10 of whom are active in training sessions. A few grew up in the Riondel area, and have noticed the depletion of Kokanee in East Shore streams, which used to be filled with spawning fish. “As kids, we were up in there,” said EFHS chair Mike The Creston Valley Advance is available at the following EASTSHORE locations: Jeffery. “You could see the spawners.” Several factors have affected the Kokanee • Wynndel Store population, such as the • Sirdar Store construction of the • Gray Creek Store Libby and Duncan • Destiny Bay Market dams — resulting in • Crawford Bay Store unnatural fluctuations • Lakeview Store in lake levels — and • Riondel Market the earlier introduction of the freshwater mysis shrimp in 1949,

its sights set on Crawford Bay’s Crawford Creek and Tam O’Shatner Creek, five kilometres north of Riondel. In addition to restoring those creeks, the EFHS also plans to do some extensive mapping and analysis of all waterways on the east side of Kootenay Lake, from Murphy Creek at the north end (just south of Johnsons Landing) to Sirdar in the south, and back up the west side to Drewry Point, across the lake between Boswell and Sanca. The active EFHS members have already been hard at work this year, and their activities have included a session with the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee that showed how to identify things like zebra mussels, and last week’s two-day workshop with Nellestijn, who went through a few of the 12 modules in the Pacific Streamkeepers curriculum, which taught about the technical part of stream characteristics and offered insight into stream health. In coming weeks, the members will have a workshop with a biologist and another workshop on invasive aquatics. SCOOTING ALONG —

The Creston Firefighters Society and Interior Brewery Workers, Local 308, donated $2,000 each to Tim Lengyell, a Columbia Brewery employee and a past member of Creston Fire and Rescue, who retired from the department about three years ago. Lengyell fell ill about a year ago and has been unable to work, having more and more difficulty walking. After hearing that he might begin to sell some of his personal belongings to pay for a mobility scooter, the firefighters society donated $2,000 toward the scooter and approached the brewery union to do the same. Celebration of Life and Interment occurred July 25, 2014 in Lloydminster, Alberta.

Clarence Casperson Hagen March 18, 1919 ~ August 4, 2014

The family of Clarence Hagen sadly announces the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather at the age of 95 years. Clarence passed away peacefully on August 4, 2014 at Swan Valley Lodge surrounded by his family and the wonderful staff at the lodge. Clarence was born in Saskatoon, SK to George and Katie Hagen on March 18, 1919. Shortly after he was born they moved to Elmworth, AB to homestead. He was raised in Elmworth, attended school and worked on a trapline with his father to provide for the family. He enlisted in the army to serve in World War II and served as a stretcher-bearer/medic. After the war he homesteaded in Gordondale, where he met the love of his life, Orah Harris. They were married in Dawson Creek, BC in 1947 and farmed in Gordondale for over 30 years. They were a driving force in their community, always willing to help family and neighbours. Clarence and Orah were instrumental in building the church and the hall and were always very active in organizing events. Upon retiring to Creston, they fully embraced church and community life, making friends that lasted a lifetime. Clarence was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Orah. He leaves to cherish his memory his son Lawrence Karen daughter Ruth Brian Brewster Àve grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. A Funeral Service was held on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church with 5ev. *wen Brown ofÀciating. Interment followed the service at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Erickson, BC.

Dr. Peter Nunn Dr. Peter Nunn died peacefully on August 18, 2014 with all his family around him. He is survived by his three children, Alison, Kate Steve , David his Àve grandchildren, Keanan, Gavin, Grayson, Danica and Roy, and Stephanie, his loving sister. Heather, his wife of 52 years, although divorced, remained close friends and trusting life partners. An unexpected joy to Peter was meeting and loving David's birth parents, Dempsey and Margaret Bob who were also with him when he died. Peter was an amazing and unusual man. He challenged systems and tilted at windmills all his adult life. The word "impossible" was simply not in his vocabulary. He TualiÀed in Medicine in London, (ngland in 19 2. ,n his student years he rowed for London 8niversity and his only life regret was that he refused an invitation to row in the Commonwealth Games in Perth. He received his )ellowship in Surgery in 19 . The family immigrated into Canada in 19 where he taught at 8BC. ,n 19 8 he was appointed General and Orthopaedic Surgeon in Creston, BC. His patients and his colleagues knew him as an extremely gifted and gentle surgeon. During the years in Creston the family built a log house by hand and developed a sheep farm. Peter developed a life-long love of running. His sadness was profound when his illness prevented him from walking and running. The family moved to 9ictoria in 1980 where he and Heather co-founded the Àrst residential Holistic Medical centre in Canada, The Victoria Stress and Pain Centre. This innovative practice changed the lives of not only the two of them, but also many clients. 3eter s reTuest is tKat in lieu of ÁoZers, donations to "Doctors Without Borders" or the "Canadian Wildlife Fund" Zould be most Zelcomed.

Play-Clean-Go curbing spread of invasives CENTRAL KOOTENAY INVASIVE PLANT COMMITTEE

Close your eyes and picture this: It’s the first hot day of the year, the sun is shining, birds are chirping, and everything around is lush, green, and pristine. The lakes and rivers seem to sparkle and dance under the sun’s warm rays. You’re heading out to spend this Kootenay summer day with friends kayaking and mountain biking, taking advantage of all this incredible region has to offer. While we are extremely fortunate to live in an area with such incredible outdoor facilities, it is important to remember the impact we have on the environment around us, especially when it comes to the spread of invasive species. There are many things we can do to help while enjoying the outdoors. Play-Clean-Go, an initiative dedicated to help curb the spread of invasives, states,

“Invasive species have many pathways of spread. For instance, weed seeds move easily in soil, so muddy boots or vehicles can move weed seeds. Some weeds’ seeds have special hooks to help them hitch a ride. Thus, weed seeds can spread on our shoes, socks, clothing and pets.” However, the transportation of pesky weeds through soil is just one aspect of our trouble with invasive species. The Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC), has discovered many cases where waterborne invasives have hitched rides on vessels such as boats, kayaks and other water equipment, which have then been reintroduced into lakes and rivers, thus causing damage. By learning how to inspect and clean equipment and belongings, we can begin to reduce the chance of inadvertently spreading something that could harm the pristine outdoor environment we cherish.

Here are a few tips: •During campfire season, use only local or certified firewood. If you are travelling, make sure all the wood you bring is used before returning home; •While hiking, walking or biking make sure to stay on designated trails designed for this purpose; and •Leave clean! Before returning home, make sure to check your belongings and remove any dirt, plants, or bugs to prevent an invasive species from tagging along. Although summer is an amazing time of year in the Kootenay region, it is important to remember the impacts our outdoor activities have on the spread of invasive species. This is an issue that affects everyone, and in order to maintain incredible surroundings it is up to us to become informed, attentive and accountable in preventing the spread of invasive species. For more information, visit www. ckipc.ca or www.playcleango.org.
