FN fish sales are legal now Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Roadside stands by local First Nations may be popping up around Chilliwack with fresh fish for sale. Two economic opportunity fisheries were provided to aboriginal fishers this week by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Recreational fisheries on the Fraser are also underway concurrently during this mega-return of Fraser sockeye, with a limit of two sockeye per day, above the Mission bridge. There is also a recreational limit of four chinook/springs, with a maximum of one over 50 cm, and three under 50 cm long. Fish boats from signatory First Nation bands on the Lower Fraser headed out on the river for chinook and sockeye using set nets and drifted gill-nets Wednesday and Thursday this week. The market fisheries stem from a 2014 agreement that allows aboriginal fishers to sell their salmon, on the heels of a Supreme Court of Canada ruling last year that upholds First Nations rights to fish and sell their catch. “The majority will sell to cash buyers, who are usually agents for processors,” said Ernie Crey, fisheries advisor for Sto:lo Tribal Council, and Cheam councillor. Once the salmon are landed and counted, there is also the option of selling at roadside operations to individuals. “So people can feel confident when buying fish that these are authorized and legal fisheries now,” Crey said. jfeinberg@theprogress.com twitter.com/chwkjourno

Flight Fest Airshow will be awe-inspiring Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Look up — way up! Experience the thrills and chills of the 23rd annual Chilliwack Flight Fest Airshow at the Chilliwack Airport Aug. 16-17. Back for the 2014 Flight Fest Society event is Kent Pietsch, Bud and Ross Granley, and of course Super Dave Mathieson and his Sheyden MX2, and so many more. It’s the first time ever that Super Dave will be part of the Twilight Show, doing an aweinspiring night routine. “It’s aerobatics at night with pyrotechnics exploding off the

wing,” he said. Super Dave has been training with Ken Fowler of Team Rocket for the night show, and found it quite different than doing daytime manoeuvres. “You don’t have much depth perception, so you have to be very careful and keep vigilant,” Mathieson tells The Progress. Super Dave will be live on the jumbo screen for the Twilight Show routine. “It will show me inside the cockpit!” He’ll have a sequence of 10 buttons to press, while strapped in and hanging upside down to ignite the roman candles. “The day show is different. The night routine is more slow

and gentle. Sort of a ballet in the sky.” The only trick is remembering not to look at the blinding lights while he’s doing it. Should be a blast, he figures. Organizers are particularly proud to have a P51 Mustang in town for the show, said Ray Firkus of the Chilliwack Flight Fest Society. The P51 warbird is here along with a Grumman FM-2 Wildcat, courtesy of the Tillamook Air Museum. “It’s the first time we’ve ever had a P51 in Chilliwack,” Firkus said. Mathieson helped make it happen. “Getting a ride in this Mustang

is on everyone’s bucket list,” he said. “The sound of the engine is so powerful and it looks so majestic.” It’s one of the most famous military planes used by the U.S. Army Air Force during the Second World War, and it’s aircraft like this “that helped win the war,” he said. The P51 is accented with bright red tails. It was first commissioned in 1945 by the RAAF, and has been proudly restored to commemorate 332nd Fighter Group, also known as the Tuskegee Airmen, a unit of African-American military aviators. Mercer house moves to new location in Rosedale Jennifer Feinberg The Progress It was a bit of a spectacle as a century-old farmhouse was slowly transported through the Rosedale community of Chilliwack last Sunday. The process of moving the iconic Mercer house was both “exciting and terrifying” for the new owners to watch. “We are pretty excited,” Melissa Sache said. “We didn’t want to see the old house get destroyed.” Saving the old yellow house from demolition became a family project. Melissa Sache, her husband, Pierre Sache, and daughter Stella, will be moving into the 110-yearold house once it’s fixed up, she said. “My husband and I have a thing for old farmhouses,” she explained. The five-bedroom, three-bathroom home was moved on Aug. 10 from its location on Yale Road East near Tycrop Manufacturing, to the new location, across the back fields on Nevin Road. “I wasn’t really nervous. The movers were great,” said Sache. “We had faith in them. It was an amazing thing to see.” One day on the way to church last year, they discussed the prospect of making it a family project to acquire and move the Mercer house. “We decided to give it a shot.” It took from mid-January to August to bring it all to fruition. Tycrop Manufacturing rep Colin Braun said he helped facilitate the big move from the Tycrop side of things. The company owners had decided they needed to use the land the house was sited on, and

were aware of community concern over the prospect of demolition. “We just had to get the house moved off the site,” he said. They originally obtained a demolition permit. But instead of tearing it down at a cost of $25,000, Tycrop officials decided to chip in those costs, hoping someone would be willing to move the unique structure to a new site. “This house was different. The

neighbours didn’t want to see it get demolished,” said Braun. So they arranged a special deal where they offered the house to anyone who could move it to within a kilometre from where it stood. They hired Nanaimo-based Pridy Brothers, which specializes in house moving. To move it, they took the house off its foundation and bolted wheels onto steel beams, effectively “mak-

ing the house into a giant trailer,” Braun said. They took down a fence, and took the structure through the factory property, onto the road, and then towed it through some fields to the new location. They managed to bypass the need to remove utility poles along McGrath Road, since they weren’t using the street for most of the move, Braun said.

‘’They were able to tow it through the field and line it up on their driveway,” he said. On the lower end of the field, the ground turned out to be a little too soft, which slowed down the entire process. But it eventually arrived safe and sound on Nevin Road. “We’re happy that someone will Continued: MERCER/ p10

Two provincial silver awards for new CSS building Katie Bartel The Progress The unique, campus-like design of Chilliwack secondary is being recognized outside Chilliwack boundaries. Graham Design Builders and StructureCraft Builders, both contractors for the CSS construction project, have been awarded Silver Awards from the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA). For 26 years, the VRCA has annually recognized the province’s best companies, individuals and projects in the construction industry with its Silver Awards. Recipients are selected for their use of innovative techniques, new materials, exceptional project manage-

ment, and their ability to come in or under budget. This year, out of 149 entrants, that covered 31 projects, totaling $1.5 billion, Chilliwack secondary was among 22 awarded. Graham Design Builders were awarded under the General Contractors $15 million to $55 million category and StructureCraft Builders were awarded in the new category of Trade Contractors $1 million to $3 million. “The Chilliwack secondary school project triggered two silver winners, which is really, really impressive,” said Fiona Famulak, president of VRCA. “The Silver Award winners this year truly represent the finest of our industry.”

The obstacles Chilliwack secondary overcame stood out with the judges. Because the new facility was constructed on the existing secondary school

property, while students were still on site, the contractors had to employ several strategies to ensure the safety of students, staff, and workers. These included

regularly communicating with the school district; creating a strict separation plan between construction traffic and school traffic; and scheduling high-risk activities during summer and spring breaks. The design, which incorporated three different user groups, including the high school, Fraser Valley Distance Education, and the Neighbourhood of Learning centre, was also seen as innovative – more university campus than high school. Other projects awarded for the same categories included a major research centre, student housing at the University of British Columbia, and the Marine Terminal El Boleo Mine located in Mexico.

“It’s commendable that Chilliwack secondary is in such good company, because all of those projects are large, complex, sophisticated builds,” said Famulak. “The general contractor and the trade contractor that’s been nominated, as far as Chilliwack’s concerned, has done a great job to make that list. One Silver Award winner from each category will also be chosen as a Gold Award winner during the 26th annual VRCA Awards of Excellence gala dinner on Oct. 16 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Tickets for the gala can be purchased via www.vrca. bc.ca/awards. kbartel@theprogress.com twitter.com/schoolscribe33

Workshop increases awareness about dementia A local organization is trying to stave off the effects of dementia for Chilliwack’s aging population. The Chilliwack branch of the Alzheimer’s Society is hosting a free workshop, Getting to Know Dementia, on Sept. 3 in an effort to increase awareness about the condition that is affecting more and more in the area. Alzheimer’s disease is the second most feared disease for Canadians, said Jude Weir, support and education coordinator for Chilliwack-Hope. And with many Chilliwack residents 50 years or older, it’s becoming

ily members or friends who are currently supporting a person with a recent dementia diagnosis. The workshop is not intended for the general public or healthcare providers. The workshop runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Minto Room at Evergreen Hall, located on Corbould Street. Pre-registration is required. For more information and to register, contact Jude Weir at 604-702-4603. For more information on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias visit www.alzheimerbc.org.

more of a pressing health issue locally. The introductory workshop will review the challenges of receiving a diagnosis of dementia. Participants will also learn about the different types of support available, how to begin planning for the future, and strategies for living well with dementia. “Participants will receive basic information on dementia and the impact is has on individuals, their caregivers, and their support networks,” said Weir. The workshop is intended for people experiencing early symptoms of dementia, as well as fam-

R AESIDE

Parents trying to guess whether school will start in two weeks are just as in the dark as everyone else. They would like to see an agreement between the BC Teachers’ Federation and the province’s bargaining arm, the BC Public School Employers’ Association, but are concerned they have been put on the sidelines as flag girls in a desperate game of chicken. Or maybe the game is chess and they don’t want their kids to be pawns. But face it, few eligible parents will turn down the province’s promise of $40 a day to cover childcare costs for children under 13 years of age even though many undoubtedly understand that this is just a bribe that could prolong the dispute and, worse, further deplete funds that should be targeted towards education. (And let us just state clearly: That money was collected to fund the public education system and that’s what it should do.) We can only hope that with time running out before Sept. 2, the two sides are back to serious negotiations. — Tri-City News

L OCALLY G LOBAL

Long-term impact of dam break still unknown There’s no arguing the breach at the Mount Polley mine site tailings pond dam is a monumental mess. Some people are cautiously optimistic that it might not be the huge environmental bullet everyone fears, but long term effects haven’t been factored in yet. Water testing done by the Ministr y of Environment on samples taken August 7, 8 and 9 at various depths from Quesnel River and Quesnel Lake met all provincial and federal drinking water guidelines. “Results indicate the concentrations of most of the parameters were below both B.C. and Health Canada Drinking Water Guidelines at these sites with slight exceedances of pH and aluminium,” the Ministry’s press release stated on August 12. “Neither of these exceedances presents any risk of adverse

health effects and are consistent with water quality results from Polley Lake since the late 1980s.” The Mount Polley Mine, located about 30 kilometres from the town of Likely in the Cariboo Chilcotin, is owned by Imperial Metals Corporation and Margaret operates as an open pit copper/ EVANS gold mine. Early in the morning of Aug. 4, the tailings pond dam let go and released about 10 million cubic metres of water and 4.5 million cubic metres of fine sand into Polley Lake. Hazeltine Creek, flowing out of the lake, carried the contaminated water into Quesnel Lake. But with the immediate pile-up of

debris, Hazeltine Creek expanded from 1.2 metres wide to up to 150 metres wide. The tailings pond was huge, measuring four kilometres by four kilometres. By bureaucratic accounts, this kind of breach is pretty rare. Officials with the Ministry of Energy and Mines do not recall anything of this magnitude in at least the last 40 years. An accident like this fundamentally shakes people’s confidence in mining operations and waste management. The massive cleanup and repairs will be Imperial Metals’ responsibility. The accident could sting their bottom line (their shares tumbled nearly 40 per cent last week on the TSX) but more important is the fallout on residents’ jobs, local enterprises, and the safety of future resource extraction projects. The reality is that, as much as this is

a disaster, B.C. relies heavily on natural resource development for economic growth. Then there is angst over migrating Fraser sockeye returning to Quesnel Lake. According to the Pacific Salmon Commission (PSC), two concerns worry many parties. One is the potential for impacts on sockeye migrating past the spill area en-route to their spawning streams. The other more immediate concern is the survival of juvenile sockeye produced by adult fish that spawned last year and which are currently rearing in Quesnel Lake. The PSC said in a press release that Quesnel sockeye are expected to make up 25 per cent of the total adult return of summer-run sockeye and seven per cent of the total return of all Fraser sockeye stocks combined this year. Sockeye heading for Quesnel

Lake have a ways to go yet. By Aug. 7, some 66,900 Quesnel sockeye had migrated upstream past Mission. It takes the salmon six days to travel from the marine areas to Mission then another 14 days or so from Mission to the entrance to Quesnel Lake. The peak migration into the lake isn’t expected until the first week in September by which time, everyone hopes, the spill will have settled out to allow safe passage of the salmon onward to their spawning streams. Why the dam failed is still unknown and while officials scramble for answers many folks in Likely are far from confident and are calling for independent testing of the water and the fish. At the very least, they deserve to know the state of the lake and the state of their future health.

Are Fraser sockeye safe to eat following Mount Polley spill? The latest Canadian mine tailing pond spill into a B.C. waterway occurred last week near Likely, BC. Prior to Aug. 4, Imperial Metals’ Mount Polley gold and copper mine tailing pond was contained behind a gigantic wall of sand. There were warnings by employees and government that the tailing pond was overfilled and could rupture. The warnings were ignored and now much of this toxic material is in Quesnel Lake. Quesnel Lake flows into the Fraser River, which flows through British Columbia to the City of Vancouver and into the Strait of Georgia. This spill is not over. Material from the tailing pond continues to escape and lake bottoms have currents that will continue to move the mountain of sediment into the water column. This incident involves far more than the drinking water of the town of Likely. The reason for tailing ponds is to contain toxic waste produced by mining. There are now mining tailings spread all

over the spill site and satellite images show the tailings moving towards the Fraser River. I am writing to suggest British Columbians look at this in a realistic light, because this affects all of us. Heavy metals, such as those found in these mine tailings tend to bioaccumulate in living organisms. They can also kill insects which young fish feed on. Quesnel Lake is an important fish nursery and rears a large part of B.C.’s wild salmon. Fewer bugs mean fewer salmon, toxic bugs means toxins in salmon. I have been contacted by First Nation colleagues asking if the salmon in the Fraser River are safe to eat. It is a breach of government responsibility that every First Nation along the river has not already been contacted with test results. I understand the First Nation Health Authority is doing testing. We all need to see those results ASAP. I have received pictures and reports from several places downriver from the spill of

salmon with their skin peeling off. Is this exposure to acid? Guessing is dangerous and we need answers. The situation has forced Cayoose Creek Band chief Michelle Edwards, Xaxli’p chief Darrel Bob and Tsk’way’laxw chief Francis Alec to close all fishing for their communities. This is leadership that takes responsibility for human health. I have spent 30 years trying to protect wild salmon from farm salmon disease. As a result, I am very familiar with government smoke and mirrors when a business activity threatens the health of British Columbia. Simply put, the escape of millions of cubic meters of mine tailings into the Fraser River should concern all Canadians whether they live downstream of a mine or not, because we are a society that cares about the fate of our children. The urgent question many people are asking: ‘are the salmon from Fraser River dangerous to eat?’

Act’ lies in its conceptualizing animals as “property,” a definition many humans, particularly those in the food industries, are loathe to surrender. It is a definition sanctioned by millennia of husbandr y practice, enshrined in six centuries of common law and solidified by decades of contemporary mass industrial exploitation. This proprietary attitude is scarcely surprising, since “ownership” confers the “right” to do as one pleases to one’s “property.” Never mind that this might be a living,

feeling, even thinking entity not intrinsically different biologically from its owner, rather than the mythical mindless Cartesian machine that one can cruelly mistreat with societal extenuation, freed from the importunities of conscience. “Machines” that moo and meow and bark. And yes, scream in pain. But cannot speak. So why do we have to accept such an outmoded legal concept? Write our Member of Parliament and take the lead to toughen up federal animal cruelty legislation, increase penal-

ties for cruelty to animals and move crimes against animals out of the property section of the Criminal Code and into a section that focuses on offences against public morals. By redefining ‘animals’ as beings capable of experiencing pain, it will take that first small step towards congruence of law with neurological reality and accord animals their legitimate status in the moral pantheon of Nature. Birdhouses to the extreme in Greendale Katie Bartel The Progress Upon first meeting Bryan Thompson, you might seriously question whether he’s left the 1970s. His grey hair is a scruffy shag upon his head; his dark sunglasses perch low on his nose; and his voice, a fast-paced, yet melodic drawl. When you see his commune of birdhouses, hanging from his trees, the hooks on his house, and sitting in the grass, you’ll have your answer. All a psychedelic mash of colour, they put Thompson right in the thick of Hippyland. “Some of my paint is just so extreme,” he said. “The crazier it looks, the better.”

His second attempt was better. Thompson, an aircraft welder by trade, built his first birdhouse He acquired thicker wood, smaller more than 30 years ago for his nails, proper tools. birdhouses were a faint memory. Decades passed. Thompson grew weary of being under the confines of a dark welder’s helmet for hours. He needed a brighter outlet for his energy. Every creative “I didn’t want to go under the helmet anymore – life was too dark,” he said. And so began his reenergized love for birdhouse making. The houses attract anything from wrens to sparrows to chickadees. Classy as can be or is that C? Alexandra Straub

Seattle, WA – Mount Rainier in Washington State stands 4,392 metres high. Its majestic presence topped off with an icy garnish, as well as wispy tufts of clouds that surround its peak. It leaves onlookers in awe. The crystal white hue of Mercedes-Benz C400 seems to have a similar effect on people. They can’t help but stare. Some take photos. Some admire from up close, some from afar. The C-Class is a staple product in the MercedesBenz lineup and is their most popular-selling vehicle in the family. It’s also one that plays a vital role in the Canadian market, one that usually involves snow! While the all-new C-Class isn’t covered in snow (just yet), it can certainly handle it with minimal effort. All C-Class sedans come standard with Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Though it’s summertime and that feature isn’t being put to use, there are plenty of other new fun things to play with in this five-person sedan. First off, five people will fit more comfortably inside. It’s larger in every dimension compared to outgoing C-Class. Then you’ll be able to bring out that smile more often when it comes to accelerating. There are two all-new 4and 6-cylinder turbocharged engines from which to choose. The C300 features a turbocharged 2.0L, 4-cylinder that produces 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. (Note, this isn’t the same engine currently found in the CLA or GLA). Then there’s the C400. With 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, this new V6 has more torque and better fuel economy in comparison with the outgoing 2014. Both engines are paired with a 7G-TRONIC transmission. Whether using the steering wheel paddle shifters or just letting the car change the gears on its own, you also have the ability to change your driving modes thanks to the AGILITY SELECT system that gives you five choices. There’s Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. The modes are self-explanatory.

www. CHILLIWACK chilliwackford .com 30309 5-09F CF1

Driving in the city and want to save more fuel? Pop it in Eco mode. Heading to a track and want the best access to power? That’s a Sport+ kind of day.

My weapon of choice, even for everyday driving, was the Sport mode. It gives the vehicle enough edge to make it fun and exciting, but without the harshness and abrupt

gear changes that would be better suited for the track. In Sport mode, the modified shifts and throttle response was sensitive enough to add immediate power but not

overwhelming, especially in an urban setting. Then there was the steering response, whose curve is adjusted to give you a better grasp for the road, but without the

abruptness, a Sport mode could potentially offer. Regardless, whether I was in the 300 or 400, I was a happy driver. And I had a happy passenger because

we both sat in comfort for the hundreds of kilometres we put on this next generation sedan. continued on page 20

The Touchpad and I still need more bonding time. I found it confusing to use at first and I ended up pressing buttons I shouldn’t have! Okay, the B pillars are quite wide and intrude on my blind spot visibility, but again, properly adjusting the mirrors and a shoulder glance will eliminate those anxieties. timetres of garden. Just imagine what a few well-placed groupings throughout your garden can do. It is best to plant them about 10cm deep and about 15 to 20cm apart. They need some room, not only to multiply, but also for the huge foliage which will develop the following spring. These fascinating bulbs can actually bloom indoors simply by leaving them sitting on a windowsill. It’s best to put them in a saucer on about two inches of gravel. The flowers won’t last quite as long, nor will they have the same intense colour, but they will bloom and can still be planted outside to grow on for next year. Each year in late April, just as the tulips are nicely in flower, huge masses of strap-like leaves appear and grow to about one foot in height. After two to three weeks, they disappear as suddenly as they arrived, having provided all the food the bulb needs. Colchicums are quite hardy and do well from zones one through nine. ‘Colchicum speciosus’, which blooms

in September and October, is most often a bright violet-pink, while ‘Colchicum album’ is the seldom seen beautiful white variety. Among the hybrids, ‘Lilac Wonder’ is the most popular with its attractive lilac-pink flowers. The double purple blooms of ‘Waterlily’ are unusual and quite beautiful, but its heavy blossoms are often knocked down and spoiled by autumn rains. Colchicums should be planted in areas where they can be naturalized without interfering with other plants. Underplantings around flowering shrubs, like white altheas or P.G. hydrangeas, make a lovely contrast when the bulbs bloom each fall. Another wonderful combination is to plant them under pink snowberries (Symphoricarpos) for a great autumn display. Colchicums are only dormant in July and

August, so you have to be quick on the draw to get them planted immediately for any kind of showing this fall, but they are well worth the effort, believe me. The main bulb supplier for B.C. has just received their shipment for distribution to garden stores this week, so for this weekend and next week, colchicums

should be widely available. I know there are many gardens out there that really need a lift in September, and these precious fall crocuses can add that little spark of colour. Think of them as fall messengers reminding us that in spring our gardens will be inundated with colour from their peers.

I write about these bulbs almost every summer because they are so easy to grow and because August is the only time of year to plant these giant crocus that bloom in September! Fall blooming colchicums go by the name of ‘Autumn Crocus’, although they are not really a crocus at all. In fact, they belong to the lily family and are native to the Mediterranean region. Colchicum bulbs become huge and can, over time, produce 19 to 25 flowers, one right after the other, until they all open in a profusion of colour. A lady, who used to grow thousands in her backyard in Vancouver, told me it takes about two years for a small bulb to grow into a huge specimen, at which point it splits into four smaller ones. Small bulbs will produce five to seven flowers; midsized bulbs will have about a dozen blooms. I have learned the hard way that these bulbs love a sunny, welldrained, yet moist location, with average soil. One year we planted them in several shady spots, only to have them gradually deteriorate to the point of no return. You can leave them in the ground to naturalize, if that is the effect you wish to have. A single corm of a large colchicum hybrid can easily multiply to cover nearly 900 square cen-

Do North American children feel included and valued? This spring, my wife and I spent three weeks walking the Camino De Santiago, a pilgrimage across the north of Spain. This amazing experience was sandwiched between a brief holiday in Paris, Madrid, Barcelona and southern Spain The Camino (sometimes known as The Way of St. James) is a hiking tour across 700 kilometres, passing towns and cities too numerous to cite. And while the cathedrals and relics are a fascination to many “pilgrims,” as a psychologist with family therapy training, I was most fascinated by the many glimpses I received into Spanish family life. I realize my observations are based on a limited spectrum of experience, but I shared my perceptions with some

Because our American friend parents are the most

likely source of nurturance for young children, it is important that they don’t feel stressed so they can give their best self to their children. Upon my arrival home, I asked colleagues about my observations. Yeah, they said, it does seem like children have a different place in European and South American society. Maybe, they conjectured, it has been our North American prizing of independence over inter-dependence that makes the difference. It is the pride we feel when our children are able to make it on their own. Perhaps in Europe there is less pressure to “make it,” -- more of a focus on being than on doing. It may also be a generational issue, as I see my children’s generation sporting a greater balance of career and family life. Whatever the answers, hopefully one day when people walk the Trans-Canada Trail, they’ll exclaim, “Those Canadians really love their children!” Dr. Robert Lees, R. Salmon returns not as simple as boom or bust

The plight of the Pacific salmon has been an important news story over the past few years, and often one of the big talking points is the small numbers that return to spawn every year. However, there is a lot more to the discussion than a single number. “When we’re talking about salmon returning, we’re actually talking about five species,” says Dr. Scott Hinch of the University of British Columbia. “Not all of them come back at the same time. It’s very species-specific as to when they return.” For example, the pink salmon return every second year to the Fraser River instead of every year, whereas the sockeye salmon, perhaps the most well-known species, returns each year. The other species of salmon in our Pacific waters are the coho, Chinook and chum, though the pink salmon is the most abundant, according to Hinch. “Pink salmon don’t require the same spawning and rearing habitat that other species do,” he says. “They don’t rear for long in fresh water, and they tend to head to the ocean shortly after the eggs hatch.” This has an effect on the size of the fish that travel to the ocean and thus their survival possibilities. Hinch points out that sockeye salmon tend to stay in the large lakes they’re born near for about a year, making them larger when they do start their migration to the

Jamie Heath, Terrasaurus Aerial Photography Ltd. photo

The Pacific Salmon Foundation recently released the results of a four-year study looking at Sockeye salmon smolts during their migration to the ocean.

ocean. Another thing to keep in mind when looking at the number of salmon is their life cycle, which actually moves in a four-year rhythm for sockeye. “Every four years we see a really big run of sockeye,” Hinch says. “In 2010 we saw one of the largest runs of Fraser River sockeye in a century. Thus, four years later (in 2014), we’re expecting to see another abundant run, though exactly how abundant is unclear. In the third year of this cycle the run is still fairly big, but in years one and two, it is quite small. That cycle seems to persist.” Aside from these natural abundance cycles, there are a few things that contribute to a large or small return of a specific species of salmon, including the number of predators, poor health and poor feeding conditions which can be affected by climate patterns like El Nino. Year-to-year changes in ocean and freshwater conditions caused by global climate change are also affecting feeding, growth and predator numbers. The Pacific Salmon Foundation, in partnership with Hinch, UBC and Kintama Research, recently released the results of a four-year study looking at sockeye salmon smolts during their migration to the sea from their rearing area in Chilko Lake. This was the first-ever study to track wild sockeye smolts (young salmon that have begun changing from freshwater to saltwater fish) through their migration via acoustic tags. Through the study, they discovered that many of the smolts disappeared during the first few days of their migration, which Hinch attributes to predators. “The water there is very clear, and the predators are generally visual feeders,” he says. “Once they get through the clear water, survivorship during the remainder of their freshwater migration was very good.” The team followed the smolts over 1,000 kilometres to the northern end of Vancouver Island. “We were the first to track this stage in this number,” says Hinch, noting that as of this spring, over 2,000 fish were tagged. The Pacific Salmon Foundation is currently working on the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project in partnership with Seattle-based Long Live the Kings, another organization committed to the protection of wild salmon. The project looks at the factors affecting the survival of the young salmon in the Salish Sea, and will build off of the results of the Chilko study in their research. “We are trying to determine the limiting factors of salmon production,” says Foundation CEO Dr. Brian Riddell. “This is the largest initiative ever undertaken; there have been thousands of studies before, but no comprehensive study.” The project will focus on the Strait of Georgia, where the the abundance of coho and Chinook salmon are low. The Foundation notes that it’s at less than one-tenth of the levels seen in the past. For more information about the Pacific Salmon Foundation and the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project, visit www.psf.ca.

BIRDHOUSES from page 15 Thompson’s skills come naturally. His father was a hobby carpenter, known for the beautiful pieces he’d build in a room that could never leave the room. They were always too big; you couldn’t get them out, Thompson laughed. His mother was an interior designer, who taught Thompson everything he knows about mixing paint. Each house has an undercoat that is sanded, three overcoats that are sanded between each coat, a layer of art, and then a clear coat on top. “I know paints,” said Thompson, who, true to his hippy roots, spent the ‘70s creating “black light” masterpieces for friends. “My birdhouses don’t rot.” For Thompson, the birdhouses are more than just a creative outlet, they’re therapy. After suffering two strokes, the 65-year-old was forced to slow his life down. “When I’m cutting [the wood], it’s like I almost get lost,” he said. “I’m kind of in another land, it almost swallows you.” Bryan’s Birdhouses is located at 6155 Blackburn Road. Hockey star hits the ice for TV show Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Chilliwack’s Hayden Guilderson is going to be a TV star. And through that, he hopes his hockey dreams come true. The 17 year old traveled to Quebec in late July to take part in ‘Hit the Ice.’ Hit the Ice is a television series that features Aboriginal hockey hopefuls going through a National Hockey League-style training camp. Guilderson was one of 25 players invited to the Chateauguay/ Kahnawake area for filming of the third season. For 17 days he was surrounded by cameras, coached by NHLers and watched intently by junior and collegiate scouts. Former NHLer John Chabot was the face of the series, a veteran of 508 games with the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings. Guilderson caught Chabot’s eye captaining Team BC to silver at the 2014 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships. “He (Chabot) personally invites some players at the tournament,” Guilderson said. “I didn’t get a personal invite, but a few days later I got an email saying they’d like me to attend. I was so excited.” Hit the Ice started with four days (two hours a day) of on-ice training, followed by a nerve-wracking experience that every player loathes. Cuts. Five of the 25 players were sent packing, and at one point Guilderson

was convinced he was one of them. “We were in the lobby of the hotel, and all the coaches were outside, sitting in lawnchairs with cameras all around,” he said. “They were calling us out one-by-one, and I was fifth-to-last. None of the guys in front of me were cut, so I was sure I was gone.” Turns out the coaches weren’t doing cuts. They were providing feedback, and gave Guilderson a vote of confidence. “They told me they liked how vocal I am, and they liked my work ethic,” he said. The cuts did come, not long after. “It was back in the lobby, me sitting there, shaking and biting my nails,” he said. “Even if I think I’m one of the better players, I still get nervous. It’s probably bad, but negative whatif thoughts pop into my head.” Guilderson and a handful of other players watched the process unfold. “This is probably a bad thing too, but as you’re sitting there with 10 guys left, and you see a guy go in there and make it, you’re thinking, ‘Uh oh. I don’t know. Is that right? Is he better than me?” he recalled. “We’re all a brotherhood at the end, but it’s a battle. Being cut and not getting seen by scouts, that could be a difference maker for us.” Hit the Ice included interesting off-ice activities, including a camping trip that was both memorable and forgettable. “We were thrown out in the middle of nowhere with some water, tarps, food and

stuff and we had to rough it for a night,” Guilderson laughed. “I hadn’t done anything like that. I’m pretty pampered. But it was cool.” The boys, ages 16-18, went cliff-jumping four or five times at a local

quarry, leaping off plateaus of 15, 20 and 30 feet. “We did indoor surfing too, Guilderson added. “There’s this big treadmill, and the water rushes at you. We had a last-man-standing competition and I was third

or fourth.” Los Angeles Kings forward Dwight King was one of the NHLers who stopped by, along with Tampa Bay Lightning forward Alex Killorn. “We played lacrosse and did a Q&A with

Dwight, and I asked him what the biggest obstacle that he’s had to overcome,” Guilderson said. “He talked about growing up in a small town and not getting opportunities to be seen. He had to move away from home to be seen.” Killorn said something that really resonated with Guilderson. “He told us how he got drafted into the QMJHL when he was 16, but ended up leaving that team and going the NCAA route with Harvard,” Guilderson explained. “He developed for four years, and now he’s a full time NHLer. That stuck with me because I’m also looking to go the NCAA route.” Back on the ice, Guilderson played in two games. This first one was against the Kanata Lazers, a junior A team in the Ontario-based Central Canada Hockey League. The second one was against the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League’s Kahnawake Condors. “The first one was allright, but I thought the second one was a lot stronger,” Guilderson said. “I was more of a pivotal player. I had a lot of chances and I think I got an assist.” “You’ve got two games to make something happen and get noticed, and unfortunately I didn’t get anyone to talk to me,” he added. “I was a little disappointed, but even if I don’t get something this year, someone who was here and saw me might remember me. Hit the Ice semi-opens doors for me, and I’ve just got to be there to kick them in.”

Chabot gave him good feedback as he left. “He told me I was fearless and kind of reckless and even though I’m a small player I throw my body around,” Guilderson said. “That was good to hear from an ex-NHL player and it really sinks in. I know I’ve got to work on my strength and get in the gym a bit more.” Guilderson had never done an on-camera interview before Hit the Ice. That part of it may be what he remembers most. “They were right in my face, and the first couple were a little wordy and jumbly,” he laughed. “Once I got the hang of it I probably did 20-25, so when the show comes out hopefully there’s a lot of me in there.” “I tried to be a little bit funny, and I think I’m going to be portrayed as a jokester,” he continued. “They asked me whether I do my own laundry and I said, ‘No, my mom does it for me.’ Stuff like that, I like to keep it light.” Guilderson will play for the junior B Abbotsford Ice Pilots in the Pacific Junior Hockey League this fall. He hopes to use it as a stepping stone to junior A. He has been invited to the Chilliwack Chiefs main camp. In the meantime, he’s waiting to see Hit the Ice, which won’t air until January. It will be shown in English and Cree on the Aboriginal People’s Television Network. “That’s so far way, but I can’t wait to watch it,” he said. “It’s going to be so cool.” Get more info online at hittheice.tv

Sports Basketball battle with Titans

The University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team will open their preseason schedule Sunday, hosting the University of Detroit Mercy Titans at the Envision Athletic Centre (EAC) in Abbotsford. Tip off is 3 p.m., with free admission for fans. The Cascades, who finished last season fourth in the Canada West (and ranked top 10 nationally), bring an even mix of veterans and new faces into 2014-15. They are led by

returning stars Kevon Parchment and Jasper Moedt, who combined for an average of 31.6 points per game last season. Supporting this dynamic duo are American transfers Dominic Brooks and Nate Brown, as well as former redshirts Vijay Dhillon and Nav Bains. Cascades coach Adam Friesen is entering his third year at the helm of the program. The Titans compete in the Horizon League of NCAA division-one. They are currently in the midst of a nine-day trip to British Columbia during which they will play four games against Canadian opponents (Quest, UBC, UFV, TWU). In 2012 the Titans qualified for the NCAA “March Madness” tournament, losing to the eventual runners-up, the Kansas Jayhawks, in the first round.

BC born players make NCAA impact

College Hockey Inc., the official advocacy group of NCAA division-one hockey, paid a visit to the busy North Shore Winter Club July 23. About 75 players, born in 1999 and 2000, laced up for exhibition games followed by an

information session on the NCAA game and how to get there. The BCHL has averaged 98 division-one scholarships per year over the last five seasons. Last year, 108 British Columbia-born players suited up for division-one programs, making B.C. the greatest source of college hockey talent in the country. “I think the BCHL’s track record speaks for itself,” said BCHL executive direc-

tor Trevor Alto, who attended the event at North Shore Winter Club. “Every year, B.C.-born and trained hockey players choose the BCHL as a path to college hockey and we see increasing demand from across Canada and the United States to be in our league as a step to the next level.” B.C. players highlighting the NCAA landscape last season included goalie Michael Gar teig (Prince George) of Quinnipiac University,

All 16 BCHL teams will be under one roof with as many as 200 scouts from the college and professional levels taking in the action. See bchl.ca

forward Scott Jacklin (Kimberley) of Robert Morris University, Connor and Kellen Jones (Montrose) of Quinnipiac University and Colton Beck (Langley) of the University of Alaska. “NCAA coaches have known for years that the qualities they look for – specifically talent and intelligence – are abundant in British Columbia,” said College Hockey Inc. deputy executive director Nate Ewell. “Some of the best players to

Chilliwack’s Meadowlands Golf and Country Club is set to host the 2014 Girls’ and Boys’ Bantam and Novice Championships August 21-22. BC’s best up-and-coming young golfers aged 14 and under will challenge the rolling greens and fairways, with the girls’ layout set at 5250 yards, and the boy’s layout at 5400. Surrey’s Khan Lee, who finished fourth last year, is the favourite this time. He finished in a tie for seventh in this year’s Junior Boys’ Championship at Meadow Gardens and tied for 36th at the 2014 BC Amateur. Defending bantam champion Alisha Lau was the only competitor to finish under par last year, and will be the favorite to repeat on the girls’ side.

ed by 41 points, with Selliken sitting third before counting in the drop round. Utah’s Austin Versteeg has won four of the six races in the Wicked Fabrication Junior Max category, and holds the championship lead. He added to his point lead in early July, earning two wins at Pat’s Acres Racing Complex in Canby, OR. His rival, rookie Sting Ray Robb, appeared to be the driver to beat, securing the fast time in qualifying by a scant 67 thousandths of a second over Versteeg. Robb led all 15 laps of the pre-final and the final looked to be in his hands until his pace slowed toward the end of the 20-lap event.

Versteeg passed Robb, who held on for second place. Kyle Wick finished third with Jessica Dezall in fourth and Stevie Pugsley Jr. in fifth. The Monster X Tour Mini Max division has seen four different winners in six races. Edward Portz is one double winner, and leads by a slim five-point margin over Conner Wick. Austin Torgerson moved himself up to third in the standings with Canadian Marco Kacic and two-time winner Jacob Blue Hudson still in the hunt. Anderson Vernon Herbert (Verne) Verne passed away at Cranbrook Hospital on July 18th, 2014. He was born on July 23, 1924, in Rose Valley, Sask. to Axel Anderson and Carrie (nee Westby) and was the fifth of eight children. He was pre-deceased by sister Amy (1915-1998), brother Clarence (1917-1969), sister Evelyn (1919-1989), and brother Walter (“Andy”) (19211996). He is survived by brother Colin (1926) in Cranbrook, brother Milo (1928) in Yuma, Ariz, and sister Ferne (1932) in Detroit, plus many nieces and nephews and their families in Cranbrook, and across North America. Verne was a piano tuner in the early 1950’s and a drilling contractor in the 1950’s and 60’s with his nephew Gerald. He was also a roofing contractor in the 1980’s. He always phoned his brothers and sisters on their birthdays, a very important duty to him and also enjoyed the futures market and stock options, which was later enhanced by computerization that he kept up with. Verne moved to Chilliwack in 1979, living previously in Vancouver and was, for many years, a member of the Vedder Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in Chilliwack. In his later years, he enjoyed the monthly seniors tea dances with his love of music. He consistently met with his old-timer group at McDonalds in downtown Chilliwack on Friday afternoons. He enjoyed talking with people. With him at the time of passing was Irene Mitchell, his friend and companion for 40 years. He and Irene were in the process of moving to Cranbrook to be closer to his brother and other relatives, having just attended a family reunion in Cranbrook in late June. A Memorial Service was held at 4:30 p.m. at Mark Memorial in Cranbrook on July 22, one day short of Verne’s 90th birthday. He is remembered by all as a very kind and gentle man.

I know you will find a soft cloud, a cozy place to take a nap perhaps another angel will let you curl up in her lap. I’ll picture you singing with the angels or leading a hand, I know you will say yes to whatever is asked, this must be part of God’s master plan. I know there is a place in heaven for a son so kind, loving and true, all of God’s creatures are precious but none as precious as you. We love you and will all miss you so much Harley.

She also served with the Salvation Army for many years during their Christmas “kettle drives” at the Cottonwood Mall. Once you met Dottie, you never forgot her!
