Gift from ‘warrior princess,’ lives on Teen’s final wish saves horse By S tep h Trou g h ton newsroom@mapleridgenews.com

The name of a teen who recently died of cancer, now lives on in the name of a Pinto saddlebred mare that she helped rescue. Hunter Birosh died July 21 from adrenal cortical carcinoma – a rare type of cancer that attacks the adrenal glands. She was Heather Birosh’s only child. “Keeping Hunter’s legacy alive is now my life’s mission,” she said. “I’m going to spend my life keeping her memory alive.” Hunter’s legacy includes volunteering for the North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association. Her mom said her daughter was often at their stables doing chores such as cleaning the stables or walking the horses. From the age of three, Hunter was

passionate about the outdoors and animals, particularly dogs and horses. In memory of her 19-yearold “warrior princess” daughter and in keeping with her last wishes, Heather gave $500, saved by her daughter while she was able to work, to J&M Acres Horse Rescue. That donation helped save the mare, that was on its way to being slaughtered for meat. The donation covered the cost to save the animal as well as shelter and food costs until she is adopted. The horse is now named Hunter. Heather wants to stay active and credits her daughter’s memory with the will to carry on. She’s working on other donations that she can give in her daughter’s name to groups that promote the outdoors or animals. J&M Acres volunteer Amy Lizee and co-workers were touched by the donation. “It’s an honour to be someone’s last wish.”

A former nurse who kissed two patients while they were sedated was sentenced Wednesday, a year after he was convicted of sexual assault. Abihudi Imbai was handed six months each for two counts of sex-

ual assault, but will serve the sentences concurrently and not spend any time in prison. “I am satisfied that you serving the sentence in the community will not endanger the safety of the community,” said Judge Garth Smith as he sentenced Imbai in Port Coquitlam provincial court. Imbai’s lawyer Daniel Markovitz had sought a conditional discharge for his client, which would have kept his record clean, but also argued to keep Imbai off Canada’s sex offender registry, a request which

Smith rejected. Imbai, 35, was convicted on two counts of sexual assault last August after a three-day trial. Known on the ward as “Nurse Abbi”, he inappropriately touched and kissed two sedated women at Ridge Meadows Hospital on June 11, 2012. The court heard Imbai administered opiates to both women then proceeded to caress their faces and kiss their lips as they slipped into sedation. In her stupor, one woman tried to push Imbai away but he continued to touch her. The second woman

They came with many questions but left with few answers about the effects new trails and streams will have on their homes. About 60 people, who live near the District of Maple Ridge’s new wetlands project along 227th Street, crowded into Chances Maple Ridge Wednesday. Great Canadian Gaming Corp. is managing the $4-million project, as per a condition set by the district in return for redevelopment of the site on Lougheed Highway, where the new Chances gaming centre opened last October. Maple Ridge wants to combine smaller streams in the ravine to the west of 227th Street to enhance wetlands areas. At the same time, it also wants trails constructed to give people access to green space and a creek in the middle of the town centre. Wetlands also will be developed by planting vegetation that helps amphibians, birds and mammals. But neighbours who live next to the area worry that opening it up will give homeless people and vagrants easy access to their backyards. Great Canadian says there will be lots of planting to separate backyards from the new trail. Lonny Lamont likes the extension of 227th Street to Lougheed Highway that was part of the project. But she doesn’t like that it’s made the area easier for the homeless to access. “So they’re all going to be in

A Maple Ridge teacher who secretly filmed videos of women and girls as young as 10 will never teach in B.C. – again. John Charles MacKinnon surrendered his teaching certificate last month and vowed to never

apply for one again. According to a disciplinary decision released by the B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch, MacKinnon was given an 18-month conditional discharge in January after he pleaded guilty in Port Coquitlam provincial court to secretly observing or recording for a sexual purpose. The learning support and special education teacher was arrested by RCMP in June 2012 for using his cellphone to snap photographs and tape video of unsuspecting women and girls, one of whom was 12 years

old, at a Wal-Mart in Langley. The photos and video were predominately of the women’s posteriors. Some were taken up their skirts. After being interviewed by RCMP, Mackinnon admitted he had begun secretly videotaping women after he got a smartphone in December 2011. He claimed he did not target children and did not take any footage at school. However videos recovered from Mackinnon’s phone told a different story. Police found two videos of a fe-

male teacher at his school as well as one of an unidentified female walking through a corridor. He also filmed two other videos of a 10-year-old student, focusing on her crotch area. The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District suspended Mackinnon without pay, a day after the videos were discovered. He resigned from School District No. 42 in April. In a statement, the Maple Ridge -Pitt Meadows School District stressed that the safety and well-

being of students is its “number one priority at all times. “We therefore took both the initial allegations and the subsequent guilty plea very seriously,” said spokesperson Irena Pochop. “Although privacy legislation prevents us from discussing this personnel matter in any greater detail, we can confirm that Mr. MacKinnon is no longer teaching in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District.” Read the full decision online at mapleridgenews.com.

A man accused of stabbing another man to death on a Maple Ridge street has been charged with seconddegree murder. Police allege Kenneth Trevor Percy McCulloch is responsible for killing Stacey Raymond King, who was found just after midnight Aug.

2, collapsed at the corner of Dewdney Trunk Road and 223rd Street. Paramedics rushed King to hospital but the 45-year-old succumbed to multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead just after 6:30 a.m., Aug. 3. Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound with the RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said the suspect fled the scene before police arrived.

“Investigators have been working non-stop to identify and apprehend the suspect in this homicide,” added Pound. McCulloch, 39, was charged Thursday. Police confirmed that McCulloch and King knew each other but wouldn’t elaborate on a motive, only saying the pair had a dispute that night. “Having charge ap-

Imbai only will be allowed to leave his home for work, medical appointments and must receive written approval from his conditional sentence supervisor for any other leave. He is also prohibited from working or volunteering as a health care provider unless he receives prior approval and must have a supervising adult with him at all times. Being a Big Brother has been the gift that keeps on giving for Mark Sippola, and now he plans to give back. “It was a great experience for both of us,” said Sippola. He’s 50 years old, but he’ll take on his “little brother” over the weekend in a game of squash. Mark’s spotting him 23 years, and isn’t sure he’ll give him a run for his money. “We’ll see.” It will be the latest of hundreds of outings over the years. Sippola did not have kids of his own, so he became a Big Brother. They went mountain biking, hiking, or just sat around and played video games. Thief was their game. “As an adult, it allowed me to do kid things again,” he said. “And you’re not consciously trying to be a positive influence, but you’re just there.” They hung out on a regular basis from when his little brother was 12 until he “aged out” of Big Brothers at the age of 18. He went off to university in Saskatchewan, and came back to Maple Ridge a lawyer. Now he has a family of his own. That’s been the best part of the whole experience for Sippola. “After the whole thing, to see him go on to better things and be so successful is the highlight,” he said. “I like to think I played some small role in who he is today.” They keep in touch, and go for dinner on occasion. Sippola is organizing a Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraiser on Aug. 22 at Delizie Italiane Bakery and Bistro. He has teamed up with several local businesses in the project. Maple Ridge’s future clear

rom near and far, people flock to beautiful British Columbia to savour our golden summers and delicious salmon. Whether it be from Stony Plain, Alberta or Shanghai, China, they arrive in droves to sample our undiminished splendour. Such attractions make a powerful case for staycations in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Why fight crowded highways when so much is right here? A quick look shows many of those attractions are in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Care to hike to a mountain peak? Maple Ridge has that in a beautiful provincial park. How about a paddle down a lazy river during the summer doldrums? Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have that. If you like safe cycling, far from the madding crowds of cars, there’s an almost endless number of trails that follow river dikes or rainforest trails. The same goes for horseback riding, where thanks to tireless volunteers, Maple Ridge has created an envious system of equestrian paths and a good supporting infrastructure, that makes it competitive in the international tourism marketplace. Maple Ridge (and to a lesser extent Pitt Meadows,) have been struggling for an identity and an economy. Much of the answer is a case of not seeing the forest for the trees. With its mountains, lakes, forests and streams, Maple Ridge needs to capitalize on its natural attributes and develop and exploit a more modest, but enduring, Whistler-type identity and focus that will bring jobs and money. Trustee criticism gets support “If any candidates (school board) plan to be hurtful bystanders, instead of going to the wall for public education, they shouldn’t be on a ballot in November.” – Along the Fraser, July 31 issue. I ended my last column with this challenge. I’d hate to see the Along the Fraser Jack Emberly same budget rubber stampers get back in, or new ones replace them. We need trustees with the guts to go to the wall for public education, vote against crippling cutbacks, even if it means offending their task masters in Victoria. I hadn’t actually expected to hear from anyone like that – but I did. Pat Furnass is a first-time trustee in Hope and Jodi Wickens is running in School District No. 43 in Coquitlam. The former left a comment at the end of my column. Wickens tweeted the piece. “I agree,” wrote Furness. “And, I’m a trustee and always get voted down.” I wanted an insider’s opinion. Why, I asked, do so few trustees – the folks we trust with public education – sign off on music and art programs and fail to support class size and composition limits? “It puzzles me,” says Furness, a retired nurse. “What the teachers are asking for is not

unrealistic. The government can put money into LNG which will be a big bomb, but not the kids, our future. “Class size should be reasonable. More and more special needs kids are not getting the help they deserve. Teachers are taking time away from the normal kids because there’s too many special needs in classrooms. If I was a teacher now, I’d say the hell with it because no one else seems to care.” Furness says the non-supportive attitude on her board came as a surprise. “This is my third year. You find out how some of the trustees think. In August, our board voted not to give teachers advance pay. The rationale? Because if we did, and they got another job, we won’t get our money back.” Furness, (wfurness@telus.net) who’s walked the picket line with teachers, says she was challenged by a retired teacher who said she shouldn’t do that. “I like to be supportive of my employees,” she replied. Teachers are trying to get back what was taken from them, stripped from their contract. They’re not getting a fair deal. This government doesn’t think the laws apply to them. What kind of public officials are we if we don’t support the laws and teachers?” “I think your article is bang on,” said Wickens, (jbtwickens@gmail.com) a selfemployeed behaviour interventionist who works with autistic children in SD 43. Wickens says she has “fire in the belly” to fight for adequate public school funding.

I reminded her that a lot of candidates – even retired school teachers – say they’ll fight the system – but become complacent once surrounded by long-term trustees and administrators. “I’ve thought about that and it scares me a bit, but I’ve never compromised the person I am. I’m loyal to my values and beliefs. That’s missing in today’s society. And, there’s a possibility for a complete turnover on some boards. That’s what I hope happens in Coquitlam.” Wickens says the board “has become too complacent accepting the status quo from senior administration. It seems like a lack of real passion. A lot of our board aren’t current. They’re not in the trenches.” Wickens promises to be involved in schools, and be a “creative” problem solver if elected. She wants to find ways to make inclusion work for all students, while tackling complacency among trustees. “Our board’s been asked to publish a needs budget along with any balanced budget. Boards could do that as a piece of advocacy. I don’t know why they don’t. It’s another form of complacency.” I wanted to know if she’d approve more cuts to essential services and programs. “Our classrooms, families and students deserve better. I advocate for reinstating funding. I wouldn’t vote for anything that hurts kids,” she said.

Premier Christy Clark assuaged the concerns of residents of the Mount Polley Mine spill by telling them that “Our hearts are with you.” With that statement, I’m sure that the good people of Likely drew a collective sigh of relief. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett added to the optimism by boldly announcing that the waste water may not be toxic. Perhaps these mine tailings are nothing more than Willy Wonka chocolate syrup waiting to be packaged for B.C. consumers? Christy Clark thinks she’s hit this one out of the park. Owners shouldn’t live in fear Editor, The News: As an owner of two small dogs living in Pitt Meadows, this story (The News, Aug. 1) has hit a little too close to home for me. I’ve also seen pitbulls in my neighbourhood and after hearing one too many stories about pitbulls attacking small dogs, I do not feel safe to walk my dogs alone anymore. The breed itself is not to blame. It’s the owners. If the owner of the pitbull cross which attacked poor Tucker, had known his dog saw

small breeds as prey, his dog should have had a muzzle on. Small breed owners should not have to live in fear of large breeds because of the owners’ irresponsible actions. My heart goes out to the Wyatt family and anyone who has lost their beloved four-legged family member due to such a careless act. I can’t imagine the pain and horror they must still be feeling. Owners of vicious dogs or dogs who have behavioural issues need to take more

responsibility to ensure this type of horrific act never happens again. Most owners don’t believe their dog could do such an awful thing, so it’s time the city stepped in and created a bylaw to force breeds that have a higher percentage of attacks to wear a muzzle while outside of their homes. Maybe then we can walk our streets again without the fear of unnecessarily losing a loved one in such a terrifying attack. Katie Aquilina Pitt Meadows

Park smokers ruined picnic meal Editor, The News: Can the District of Maple Ridge provide some signage and enforcement of its bylaw against smoking at beaches and picnic areas at Whonnock Lake? My family went there Sunday night

for a picnic and not long after we sat down we found ourselves directly downwind from two smokers at another picnic table. We packed up to move to another picnic table but found that one littered with cigarette butts

and packs. We went for a swim. I noticed the sand had a number of cigarette butts. Such nice sand for the little kids to build sandcastles with. Before we left we stopped at the playground around which there were a

couple of families with hookah pipes. Let’s raise the bar a little and make our parks and picnic areas clean and enjoyable for everyone to use by adhering to the bylaw. Michael Patterson Maple Ridge

Highlighting Trudeau’s current high ranking in leadership polls, Sas says he admires Trudeau’s leadership capabilities. “He (Trudeau) represents the interests of Canadians very well.” Established only a few months ago, the local Liberal riding association, says Sas, is gaining in popularity. “There’s a lot of excitement around our national candidate.” Regular fund-raising events and gatherings such as a coffee house meeting held every first and second Tuesday of the month has helped build popularity for the group, says Sas. A nomination meeting for candidate selection has not been confirmed yet.

For good used value: Focus on a late-model Ford By Bob McHugh

he Ford Focus is an affordable and underrated used compact car buy. It got a major makeover for the 2008 model year: an all-new coupe (two-door) edition was introduced to complement the stalwart sedan. Lamentably, however, the popular-in-Canada (but not in the U.S.) wagon and (Euro-style) hatchback versions of Focus were discontinued. The ‘08 refresh of Focus included new front and rear body fascias, improved sound insulation, a redesigned interior and a new-tech multi-media upgrade. The ‘08 Focus is also about 45-kg lighter overall thanks to the weight reduction measures included the elimination of a spare tire, which was replaced by an inflator kit. A real spare tire/ wheel could be added as an option. An auto industry landmark was reached when Ford teamed up with Microsoft to offer a unique new multi-media system called Sync, which (for the first time) allowed control of digital music players and cellular phones with voice commands. In addition to the benefit of driver handsfree call taking, the Sync system can also translate text messages into voice messages. The ‘08 Focus, both coupe and sedan, came in S, SE and top-line SES trims. The Sync system was a ($495) option with the SE trim level and standard with SES. On the downside, electronic stability control was not offered on any version of the ‘08 Focus. The most noticeable change from a driving perspective was the reduction in outside noise and chassis vibration. The quieter cabin is the result of sound-wdeadening improvements that include the use of thicker glass. The steering column in this Focus is also mounted on a stronger crossbeam beneath the instrument panel, which helps eliminate vibrations. The only engine (in Canada) was a 2.0-litre, dual-overhead-cam, 4-cylinder engine, which came with a new air intake and

cooling systems. It produces 140-horsepower (4-horsepower increase over the ‘07) and fuel economy has been improved. The transmission choices were a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. Fuel economy is 8.4 L/100km in the city and highway fuel economy is rated at a phenomenal 5.9 L/100km with the automatic. The manual transmission slightly increases city consumption and reduces highway consumption, so overall the rating is the same.

AMOUNT AVAILABLE ON THE 2014 SONATA HEV LIMITED W/ TECH Overall, the coupe performed better than the sedan in IIHS crash tests, as the sedan got lower scores in side impacts. All editions of the ‘08 Focus came with a new design of side curtain air bag that uses a “roll-fold” technology to protect occupants who are resting their heads against a window. The biggest change on the 2009 edition of the Ford Focus was the inclusion of electronic stability control as standard on the SES trim. It was also standard with a new SEL mid-level sedan trim and an option on lower trim levels. The coupe also got a sportier appearance package and a minor improvement in performance. Just minor tweaking of trim packages followed in 2010. In 2011, the coupe edition was discontinued. All of which was in preparation for an all-new Focus that arrived (with great fanfare) for the 2012 model year. If the trailer does begin to sway, try adjusting the cargo and equipment accordingly and then repeat the test. If that did not help, a sway-control or a weight-distribution system with sway control may be needed. Trailer sway can be a scary experience, especially if it is a large trailer. If this happens, do not panic. Take your foot off the accelerator and coast to a slower speed; avoid sudden movements of the steering wheel. Apply the brakes slowly when you are down to a safe speed. Check your hitch ball, coupler, and safety chains every time you tow. Many people with long trailer experience use a checklist to be sure all equipment is hooked up and in good condition.

Damage can happen quickly when something goes wrong. For example, safety chains wear through very quickly if they are in contact with the pavement. Never allow anyone in or on your trailer while it is being towed. Speed limits are generally lower than for other vehicles. Leave a little extra room between you and the vehicle in front of you. Even if you are using trailer brakes, you will not be able to stop nearly as fast as you can without a trailer. A good general rule is to double the two-second rule, making sure you maintain at least a four-second gap between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. For heavier trailers, you will need to leave more space. The longer the trailer, the further you will have to drive into intersections before beginning your turns. When approaching a hill, you will want to keep your speed consistent whether you are going up a hill or down.When descending, be extra careful not to overwork your brakes. Use a lower gear that will keep a consistent speed. Pull off the road occasionally to let brakes cool and to inspect trailer brakes. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

The PNE Prize Home is an iconic part of the annual Fair, and this year’s home is truly spectacular. The Prize Home has been designed by Jillian Harris for the third year. Harris, who has starred on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, hosted Canada’s Handyman Challenge and is the current co-host of Love It or List It Vancouver, drew inspiration from her passion for Kelowna, her current home. Once the winner is announced, the home will be transported to an estate-sized lot on Kelowna’s Kirschner Mountain. The 3,000-square-foot home, built by Britco, is worth about $1.3 million, with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. “Explore the 2014 PNE Prize Home, and you’ll find it open and bright with a fresh,

ocal food production has been on my mind a lot lately, much in part to the proliferation of fruit stands that I see on old Dewdney Trunk Road on my way to and from work. Eating local is never an easy proposition as it always begins with the most difficult of tasks … self-examination. So let’s just start with me and my breakfast this morning; I had peanut butter and sliced bananas on multigrain toast with a side of organic raspberry yogurt and some black coffee. It turns out that my peanut butter is from India, and the closest place to import coffee and bananas from is Central America. I had some hope for the multigrain bread but apparently that is baked in Toronto and shipped halfway across the country, while the yogurt comes from even further afield, Quebec. In other words, the closest food source for this meal was 3,200 kilometres away as the crow flies. Which begs the question, how much fuel, labour and packing materials are unnecessarily wasted in the process of preparing all of my weekly meals? Some of you might argue that as long as we can afford these foods, what does it matter? It matters because our current system of mass food production and distribution relies heavily on three outdated assumptions; 1. Those current producing regions will be able to sustain production. 2. The cost of transporting goods will remain relatively low. 3. The people who pick and pack those edibles will remain content with substandard living conditions and wages. All of these assumptions are already showing signs of cracking – with drought threatening the California fruit and vegetable industry, workers in developing countries demanding better compensation for their labours and the already rising fuel costs – which will accelerate as this resource becomes scarcer. Then there are those naysayers who believe that we cannot produce enough food

in the Fraser Valley to sustain the current population, even though it has been done before by First Nations and even as late as the 1920’s – when much of our fruit, vegetables and meat was raised right here. The question isn’t whether it can be done, but do we have the foresight to begin

preparing for a diet that will inevitably rely heavily on local production? Thankfully, there is hope on the horizon and we find it in the form of dedicated local growers. Prominent among these is Ken and Elke Knechtel of Red Barn Plants & Produce who along with their grown children run both the 224th Street location and their satellite farm in Cawston, where the warmer weather crops thrive. They have transitioned from being one of the top perennial growers to selling edibles simply because that is where the market has led them, with edible sales increasing by about 10 per cent annually for the past three years. He’s been as rare a sighting as a phone booth these days, but Curtis “Superman” Dickson will finally bring his scoring prowess back to the Burrards. With the series knotted at 2-2, last year’s Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) scoring leader, and one of the great pure scorers in all of lacrosse, was set to return from injury on Thursday night in Burnaby. Dickson, named for his airbourne assaults on opposing goals, may be able to tip the odds in the Burrards’ favour. The results of last night’s contest were not known at press time, but on Tuesday • Burrards vs Lakers in the Burnaby Lakers evened game six, Saturday, the best-of-seven at 2-2 with 7:45 p.m. at Planet Ice a 8-6 win at Planet Ice. The Burrard offence certainly looked like it needed a boost, going into the third period down 4-3. Coach Chris Gill’s attempts to jump-start it resulted in some bullet holes in his shoes. First he tried to sneak an extra attacker onto the ice just seven minutes into the third period, and gave up a empty net goal. “We had scored three goals, and we weren’t getting many shots on goal. Maple Ridge pitcher Kyle Ross came within one out of a complete-game shutout, as he pitched Team B.C. to a 5-1 victory over Alberta to win the Baseball Canada Cup on Sunday night in Saskatoon. Ross was dominant through six and two-thirds innings. He allowed only one earned run, three hits and four walks, while striking out six batters. He was relieved after allowing a run with two out in the top of the seventh. The junior national team member was also a key starter for the Langley Blaze, as they won the Premier Baseball League championship this summer. Over seven starts, the lefty Ross posted an ERA of 0.85, and had 51 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched. His record was 5-1. Two other Ridge players on the Blaze were Andre Pelletier and Mason Verge. Pelletier hit 0.255 and had 20 RBI and 20 runs in 106 at bats.

In the tied round, he made up a stroke on each of the last two holes to earn the single point, so it actually felt like a victory. All of his matches, played over three days, were close. “It was a great experience,” he said of golfing at the Home of Golf, which dates back to the 1400s.

The win marks the first time since 2007 that Canada won both the North American Cup and the Euro Junior Golf Cup in the same year. Hunt, 19, is a scratch golfer and member of Meadow Gardens. He is sitting second on the order of merit on the Canadian Junior Golf Association for boys aged 15-19. Breakthrough summer highlighted by trip to Youth Olympics Ridge Canoe and Kayak club member Alex Brent has enjoyed a breakthough racing season, and left for China ths week to compete in the Youth Olympics.

When Alex Brent arrived in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia at the end of May for the Canoe Kayak Canada national team trials, he was rather anonymous. Case in point: after the junior men’s K1 1,000-metre race, he overheard two spectators discussing what had transpired. One observer asked what the order of finishes had been. The other replied with the names of the gold and silver medalists – both well-established paddlers from Eastern Canada. “And some random guy from B.C. got third,” he added. That would be Brent, the 17-year-old Dewdney native who had just won his first junior national kayaking medal. “I was like, ‘Uh, that’s me,’” he recounted with a chuckle. They surely know his name now – Brent went on to win gold the next day in the junior men’s K2 1000 with partner Eric Fast of Burnaby, winning by a dominant 4.8-second margin. There was so much open water between the Brent/Fast boat and the second-

place crew, they started celebrating 100 metres before the finish line because they knew they had the race in the bag. Those breakthrough performances paved the way to a memorable summer for Brent, as he was named to the junior national team. In mid-July, he traveled to Szeged, Hungary for the Junior/U23 World Championships, and made the B final in the K2 1000 with Fast, finishing 18th overall. This week, he hops on a plane for Nanjing,

China, where he’s part of the Canadian contingent for the Youth Olympics. The Youth Olympics are a relatively recent International Olympic Committee initiative, with the first Youth Summer Games being staged in Singapore in 2010. They are held every two years, alternating between summer and winter events, and feature athletes in the 14-18 age bracket. “This may sound a tad cliche, but I’m just happy to be paddling for Canada,” enthused

Brent, who is going into Grade 12 at Abbotsford’s St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary. “It’s what I’ve been thinking about for years – paddling for the national team. I’m finally at that point, and it just makes me happy.” Brent got his start in kayaking 11 years ago when he attended a camp hosted by the Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club on Whonnock Lake. He’s been a member of the club ever since. He attributes his breakthrough summer to a terrific winter of training that preceded it. He spent hours upon hours lifting weights, and sharpened his technique during a sixweek training camp in Florida. “My parents used to describe me as rolypoly,” he said with a chuckle. “But I’ve been growing every single year. In Grade 8, I was 155 (pounds) and 5’2”. Now I’m 5’8” and still 155 pounds. I’ve been slimming out. “I probably lost 10 pounds of fat and gained 10 pounds of muscle (in the past year).” Brent’s goal at the Youth Olympics is to finish in the top 10, but “the dream would be to win a medal.” “That would be phenomenal, to bring it home and show my coach,” he said.

Burrards win gold Sports Editor’s Note: The Aug. 13 story about Ridge Meadows Burrards minor lacrosse players who won medals at the national championships in Whitby, Ontario last week was mistakenly cut short. Here is the rest of the story as it should have appeared. The bantam girls team also had a strong group of Burrards, including head coach Chris Gill who is also in his first season as head coach of the Western Lacrosse Association Burrards. Winning the gold medal were local players Kennedy Gill, Mykhaela Johnson, Ashleigh Lesser, Jayde Meredith, Brooke Parry and Paige Bell.

Bell was the all-star for B.C. and finished sixth in tournament scoring with 12 points. “She doesn’t stop running – she’s a workhorse,” said Gill. “She leaves it all out on the floor, that’s what I love about her.” Johnson was tied for third in tournament scoring with 14 points on eight goals and six assists. Gill gave her the nickname “Showtime” after she scored the gamewinning goal in the final over Ontario on a great individual effort. “It was a pretty special goal,” said Gill. The B.C. midget girls also won gold, beating Ontario 6-2 in the final. Maple Ridge had Megan Kinna, Candace McDole, Nicole Pahnke and Mikayla Quinn all on the team. Kinna’s 11 points tied her for third in tournament scoring, and the team scored 58 goals while allowing only 12 against through four games. The B.C. junior female took bronze with a win over Team Nova Scotia 5-3. Megan Stewart of Ridge Meadows was the tournament all-star for B.C., and was her team’s leading scorer with 11 points on seven goals and four assists. That placed her fifth in scoring in the tournament. “It was a really successful year,” said Gill. “I can’t state enough how hard it is to win in Ontario.”

Dad was born on a cold December day in Stonewall, Manitoba, 81 years ago. He left home as a teenager to work in Ontario for a short time and returned to Manitoba where he joined the Army and earned his paratrooper wings. He and Mom got married in Winnipeg in 1954. In 1960 they moved west where they farmed for many years. Dad was always the happiest when he was busy building barns, houses, truck decks, etc. Dad and Mom had been married for 58 years when she passed in 2012. Dad took her death very hard and was always thinking of her. He was diagnosed with cancer in April and after a short stay in hospital he passed away on July 1st. Dad said he was ready to go and be with Mom. He leaves to mourn 3 children - Blair (Karen), Lisa (Tony), Cindy (Jet) and 6 grandchildren - Brianne, Curtis, Courtney, Lane, Deidra and Chelsea. He also leaves 2 sisters Marguerite (Henry) and Phyllis and many nieces and nephews. He will be forever missed by his family, friends and animals. The family would like to thank the doctors & nurses at Abbotsford Hospital and the nurses & volunteers at McKenny Creek Hospice in Maple Ridge - You are real live angels! Many thanks to niece Lynn and nephew Jack.
