Low mobility trail open to wheelchair accessibility AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Hallis Lake is diversifying. Recently completing the Hallis Lake Low Mobility Trail, Hallis Lake is the most recent location to provide wheelchair accessibility. The trail was built in partnership between the Cariboo Regional District (CRD); the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development through the BC Community Recreation Program; Northern Development Initiative Trust; the Cariboo Chilcotin Beetle Action Coalition; and the Cariboo Ski Touring Club. “The Cariboo Regional District is to be applauded for making accessible trails a priority,” Cariboo North MLA and Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Coralee Oakes said. “For people with mobility issues, providing accessibility is more than just creating smoother pathways. It’s about opening up opportunities to participate more fully in life. It’s wonderful to see this accessible trail project come together so close to my home in B.C.. “Its completion represents one of approximately 14 accessible trail upgrades in the Cariboo region that we were pleased to support with a grant of $401,250 through the Community Recreation Program.” Hallis Lake received $5,000 towards their project from the $401,250 Community Recreation Program grant awarded to the Cariboo Regional District for the accessible trail upgrade projects “I am extremely pleased that we have now completed the Hallis

Lake Low Mobility Trail,” CRD Electoral Area A Director, Ted Armstrong said. “This is the next step in making the Cariboo Chilcotin one of the most attractive wheelchair accessible tourism destinations in the world. Projects such as the Hallis Lake Low Mobility Trail show what can be accomplished through regional collaboration and commitment to improving the quality of life for residents and visitors of all abilities.” The trail, 760m long with packed, crushed gravel, takes visitors through the forest to a lookout bench looking back to the Hallis Lake Cross Country Ski Lodge. The trail features a gentle grade with one steeper section on the way back to the Lodge. At the trailhead, an information kiosk displays a map of the Hallis Lake Low Mobility Trail and an accessible outhouse is provided for visitors’ convenience. An accessible pullout with a bench is also offered along the trail. “The low mobility trail that the Cariboo Ski Touring Club has just completed provides a great opportunity to attract a greater diversity of people to use the outstanding public recreation facility at Hallis Lake,” President of the Cariboo Ski Touring Club Brian Black said. “People who could not previously utilize the trails are now included and will really enjoy this beautiful trail.” Hallis Lake Cross Country Ski Centre is located 14.5 km east of Quesnel on Hydraulic Road. For further information about the growing list of accessible trails within the Cariboo Regional District, visit cariboord.ca and look under services/recreation.

Painter and carver reveal their passion in first ever show

he current show in the Quesnel Art Gallery, Deep in the Forest, showcases the work of painter Marguerite Whittingham and carver Arlene Cave. For both women, this is the first time their work has been offered in a show. “My work is primarily for my own enjoyment,” Whittingham said. She admitted her first artistic expression was as a child, scribbling in the Bible. Always interested in painting and drawing scenes from nature, this inspiration has carried her throughout her life, but as for many, life and raising her family got in the way of her artistic expression. However, for the past 10 years, painting has consumed Whittingham and once she added the dimension of real time hiking, canoeing and experiencing nature, capturing images with her camera then transcribing them to her canvasses, she felt she’s found her fire. Every location (but one) depicted on the walls of the art gallery reflect a place Whittingham has experienced first hand. Every waterfall (her favourite), every forest, every sacred totem and rock face hold memories and emotions for her that she then commits to canvas. “In such a piece as Among the Giants I feel part of the 2000-year history of the place, the trees, the forest floor,” she said. Then, as her own presence is

testament, she adds the newly grown trees. “I’m immersed in everything around me.” But Whittingham comes back to the waterfalls that truly inspire her. “They hum and sing, they roar and thunder, I feel their power,” she added. She labels herself a landscape painter but is quick to state she’s

not a Tom Thompson or Emily Carr but is proud to say she enjoys similar experiences as those two great painters. For Arlene Cave, carving is something she almost literally fell into. Always interested in creative pursuits, in 1996 Cave joined an informal group of ladies, under the tutelage of Hazel Smith, making walking sticks, folk

art, birds and Christmas ornaments. This set her on a path that far exceeded her mentor. She became zealous about carving and her skill grew. Cave has dedicated her show to Hazel Smith who was always a strong supporter and proponent of Cave’s work. “I had made willow furniture but the only thing I’d carved was soap in elementary school,” she said with a smile. “I never knew I’d love it or would be any good at it.” Cave also enjoys taking long walks looking for just the right piece of cottonwood bark and allows the wood to lead her inspiration. “I carve when the mood takes me.” And the average-sized piece consumes about 20 hours. She loves carving whether its the cottonwood bark spirit houses and characters, bass wood birds or even the fish from a rather unorthodox source. “I like it all.” Having just completed a new carving studio addition on her home, Cave is happy to work away on a piece, listening to soothing easylistening music. “I especially love carving in summer when the light is perfect. Some pieces drive me to work non-stop, eager to see what the finished piece will be, others slowly reveal themselves.” Deep in the Forest hangs to the end of August and is sponsored by Cariboo Peat and Gravel.

Time to sign up for Barkerville Seniors Trek

Quesnel and area seniors will be able to sign up starting Aug. 20 for the Rotary Club’s annual Seniors’ Trek to Barkerville, slated for Sept. 10. Organizing committee chair Ron Paull reports that signup sheets will be available at the Quesnel Seniors’ Centre and the Golden Centre until all 110 seats on two charter busses are spoken for, on a first come, first served basis. Following an hour of fun and fellowship on the Cariboo Waggon Road, the entourage will be treated to lunch in Barkerville and admission to the famed Theatre Royal show. After the show, everyone will have time to enjoy tea and sweets in Barkerville’s restaurants while poking about the shops and displays. Of course, the usual loaf of sourdough bread from Goldfields Bakery will be high on many a shopper’s

Enhance the Value of Your Estate with Life Insurance Most of us think of life insurance as a way to protect our family financially when we die. But insurance coverage can go beyond that basic need, to increase the value of an estate. Of course, an insurance policy’s primary purpose should be to ensure that your loved ones won’t find themselves in difficulty. But consider using life insurance to leave more to your heirs, other beneficiaries or even charity. Last year’s trek to Barkerville. list. The day will be capped off with the annual group photo in front of St. Savior’s Church. The buses are scheduled to arrive back in the Gold Pan City around 4:30 p.m. Quesnel Rotary Club president Rebecca Beuschel is hoping to accompany the seniors on their outing. “Our club has been hosting the Seniors’ Trek to Barkerville

for many years and this is a great way for us to recognize and honour the contributions our seniors have made to the betterment of our community,” Beuschel said. Paull says this annual outing for our local seniors is the most enjoyable and rewarding aspect of his Rotary service. He encourages seniors 65+ who wish to participate in the trip to sign up as soon

as the signup sheets are available on Aug. 20. “Our club is committed to continuing this annual outing for our seniors,” Paull said. “Our charity fund, with assistance from provincial gaming grant pays most of the bills for the out-

ing, but the charter bus company, Barkerville Town, Barkerville restaurants and Theatre Royal all give us a break, which we truly appreciate.” Paull can be reached at 250-992-8994, or any Rotarian can direct enquiries to organizing committee members. Obituary Tribute

You can do this through a permanent life insurance policy, such as universal life or participating whole life, which provides both insurance and an investment component. The insurance portion will take care of basic insurance requirements, while the investment portion can be used to boost the value of your estate. For example, when you take out a universal life policy, a portion of the premiums you pay go toward insurance, with the rest going into the policy’s investment component (sometimes known as the cash or savings portion). The money in the investment component is sheltered from tax, resulting in faster growth than if money is invested outside the policy. When you die, your heirs receive the face value of the policy’s life insurance, as well as the value of the investment portion of the policy. Both are tax-free to beneficiaries, so they receive the entire amount of the policy and its investments. With universal life, you have some control over the investment portion because you can choose from a number of investment options offered by insurers. Typical choices include investments whose returns are linked to the performance of brand name mutual funds, guaranteed interest accounts or stock market indexes. The wealth that accumulates in the investment component will depend on the deposit paid and performance of underlying investments. How much you pay in premiums and how often is generally up to you. In most cases you can pay whatever you wish. However, there are governmentimposed maximums based on factors such as your age, gender, expected lifespan and the face value of the policy. This flexibility is what makes universal life such a valuable estate-planning tool. You can start small, with the goal of providing financial protection for your family in the event of your death. As you grow older and find yourself with more disposable income or cash flow, you can focus on the investment component of the policy. You’re a good candidate for universal life if you have money left over to invest after your basic financial, investment and insurance needs are met-including maximizing yearly Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contributions and paying down loans. This type of policy is suitable for not only for those seeking insurance flexibility and a way to enhance estate values, but those who need additional taxsheltered growth after making RRSP contributions. Speak to your financial advisor about how you can use life insurance as a tax-effective way to enhance the value of your estate. Insurance and annuities are offered by Edward Jones Insurance Agency (except in Québec). In Québec, insurance and annuities are offered by Edward Jones Insurance Agency (Québec) Inc.

“If there’s love, dear… those are the ties that bind and you’ll have a family in your heart, forever. All my love to you, poppet. You’re going to be all right. Bye bye.” –Robin Williams, Mrs. Doubtfire

D

epression is a powerful thing. Monday, reports surfaced of legendary comedian Robin Williams death by asphyxiation. He was hilarious, rich, sought-after, respected – more importantly he was a father, a husband, a friend. He also suffered from depression. This is one of many diseases that still baffle medical and science professionals and doesn’t receive the respect and acknowledgment it deserves. My father introduced me to Williams and a love of war-time flicks with Good Morning Vietnam. My baby brothers and I watched Aladdin so many times I can still sing most songs (admittedly badly) without lyric aid. Mrs. Doubtfire still tears at my heartstrings. Hook still has me dreaming of the ultimate imaginary food fight. Good Will Hunting is a cinematic masterpiece (even if it does include Ben Affleck). I was too young for Mork and Mindy and have never had the privilege of seeing his live performances. But the rave reviews and his obvious penchant for making people laugh showcases talent, rarity and brilliance. But none of his talent, popularity, loved ones, fame and fortune could help Williams see past his deep depression. It’s not enough to eat right, exercise and think happy thoughts. One cannot simply “fake it” through bouts of extreme sadness. It’s time we started treating this illness as we would any other potentially life-threatening disease. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

Thanks for everything, Robin Williams

T

he day Robin Williams died I received multiple texts and emails from friends and family informing me of the distressing news. In my circle, he’s not just known as a famous movie star and comedic legend, he’s also known as my longtime celebrity crush. I never met the man, but I’ve been smitten ever since the first time I saw him guest star as Mork from Ork in the TV show Happy Days back when I was a kid. Over the decades, whenever I was asked which actor I found most attractive, I always named him. People expecting an answer like Johnny Depp or Tom Cruise have teased me about my unconventional choice for a heartthrob, especially after the comedian revealed his hairy torso to the world. But as his career skyrocketed, so did my admiration for his extraordinary talents and compassionate heart. Finding out that he had passed away would have made me sad no matter what, but to discover that he was suffering from severe depression and was in so much pain that he took his own life made me cry. Here was an incredibly

Lori Welbourne

On A Brighter Note talented, wildly successful, adorably beautiful man who was loved around the world, and he purposely ended his own life? It made no sense. It also made perfect sense. That’s how powerful depression can be. It’s baffling to anyone who has no idea what that kind of darkness can feel like. I consider people like that lucky. I grew up with a mentally ill mother who talked about suicide often, but vehemently rejected professional therapy or guidance. That avoidance eventually led to her death last December at the age of 65. I myself have struggled with deep depression and anxiety, and have felt shame and embarrassment because of it. Before I got help, I thought anyone I opened up to would just respond with the question I often asked myself: “What do you have to be depressed about?”

the destructive stigma that’s still attached to mental illness and encourage people to talk more openly, without fear they’ll be perceived as weak for simply trying to get stronger. We should be taking care of our minds the way we’re encouraged to take care of our bodies, recognizing that when it comes to the complexities of the human brain, there’s not always an easy remedy. All I can say is that more communication, not less, is key. I understand why people take their own lives - I’ve been frighteningly close myself. We just need to hold on to the realization that as bad as it gets, it will eventually get better as long as we ride it out. Sadly, Robin Williams didn’t do that this time. His astonishing light might now be extinguished, but I have no doubt that his physical departure has illuminated this invisible disease and made it more visible. Rest in peace, Robin Williams. Thank you for all the love, laughter and life lessons you left behind. You, my celebrity crush, will continue to be such a gift. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. Millions are probably thinking the same thing of Robin Williams right now. From an outsider’s point of view, he had it all and anyone would be ecstatic to live a life as blessed and privileged as his. But, all that he was and everything he possessed couldn’t save him from the overwhelmingly strong clutches of his despair. His devastated family is now asking people to remember his life and the great work he left behind rather than focusing on his death or the way he died. I think we can do both. The truth about his heartbreaking suicide could be another great gift for the world. He’s certainly not the first famous person to selfdestruct, but I can’t think of anyone else as widely beloved as Robin Williams. He was one of those performers that everyone seemed to adore or at least appreciate. And as uniquely gifted as he was, he possessed an everyman quality that people of all ages could feel connected to, as if they’d become fast friends should they ever meet in person. If a sparkling, hilarious man like him could succumb to the darkness of depression, anyone could. I can only imagine his tragic death will help break down

Major traffic safety concerns on Davie

Editor: Open letter to MOT, RCMP and WorksafeBC This is regarding the ongoing traffic safety concern that we have regarding the corner of Davie Street and Highway 97 North bound out front of our business. My employees are complaining about their safety concerns when returning to our business from Davie Street North bound rounding the

Letters to the Editor

corner onto Legion Drive. The north bound traffic (specifically semi truck and trailers) cross over the double solid line and take up sometimes half of the opposing lane. As this can be a blind corner, the north bound trucks cannot see before it is too late that they can collide with Davie street traffic. This is a regular occurrence (numerous times per day), Recently I had a near miss at 9:45 in

the morning. I am concerned for the safety of my employees, customers, myself and the general public. There has already been a serious collision on this corner for the reasons listed above where a Canada Post vehicle was hit and if it wasn’t for the fact the vehicle was a right hand drive postal delivery vehicle, the driver would have been seriously injured or worse.

My previous communications regarding this safety concern have resulted in some traffic pattern changes which have not remedied the situation. I had been told by yourselves that the situation would go away after the Johnston Bridge flood bypass gates were closed – not true. My suggestion to remedy this safety issue is to straighten out the

approach lane where the Highway 97 North bound traffic merges onto the Moffat Bridge Approach road. When I suggested this last time, I was told that the small piece of undeveloped property that this recommendation would impact is privately owned. I also suggested that if concrete barriers were to be installed, this would prevent the traffic from

S

usan Shorope peruses the vegetables, looking for just the right size and freshness before popping her choices into a bag. She’s at the Quesnel Farmers’ Market and happy to be selecting food for her next week’s meals. Accessing the market isn’t simple for her, she has mobility issues and financial constraints but with the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program, a partnership between B.C. Association of Farmers’ Markets and various community partners including the local farmers’ market, Susan not only has access to fresh, local produce but also participates in a food skills program to provide seniors with affordable

and enjoyable meals. The coupon program, now in its third year in Quesnel, operates in 47 communities across the province and is funded by the Ministry of Health providing low-income families, pregnant women and seniors with coupons worth $15 a week to purchase fresh vegetables, fruit, dairy, meat, fish, eggs, nuts and herbs. In Quesnel the North Cariboo Aboriginal Family Program Society is the partner organization which distributes the coupons to participants identified by other community organizations such as Better@Home, a program which assists seniors remain in their home through various volunteer and low-cost services. Susan receives assistance with transportation through Better@Home

and her name was given to Cathy Juric at NCAFPS who runs the various community kitchen programs. One of her many programs includes From Market to Kitchen, a seniors cooking program. Seniors are driven to the Farmers’ Market by their Better@Home volunteers where they make their purchases for the week then are driven to NCAFPS’ Hoy Street facility where they prepare affordable, nutritious meals which they can then take home, along with their market purchases. “We have about 15 signed up but it varies how many participate,” Juric said. “We divide them into groups of four or five and each group has between two and three community kitchen

experiences a month.” She added they hope to include extra cooking classes for bulk purchases at the market for freezing produce and even possibly doing a little canning for winter use. Juric also said one of the priorities in the program, besides the obvious nutritional element, is the individual medical issues facing their participants. Susan said she’d never gone to the market before the Better@Home program because of her transportation issues. “Better@Home has opened up my world, I think its great going to the market, I get out and about,” she said. Ann Braun is a big proponent of the community kitchen and all its programs. She participates in both the community kitchen

and the From Market to Kitchen programs and right now for her, its all about the socializing. “The majority of time I sit at home waiting for something to do,” she said. “I now have neuropathy in my feet and can’t walk very well.” Although she’s not new to the market, Ann says she’s always enjoyed going there. “Fresh is always better.” For Emily Scholin she’s happy to be getting out and being with people. Recovering from a broken hip, Emily is excited to be back doing things. “I gave up driving last year, so getting around is difficult,” she said. Admitting she wasn’t aware there were so many people just like her, Emily said the cooking class is

like a social club and she added she likes being with people and cooking with others. Cooking in the community kitchen, supervised by Juric, is a pleasant experience for the three women and they settle down and decide which recipes they are going to tackle. Each brings different cooking experiences and skills to the task, Susan sitting at a table, Emily and Ann working at the island. The kitchen is shiny and the appliances are all new. Bowls, utensils, kitchen equipment and a fully stocked fridge and freezer are luxuries to many seniors and a caring, friendly helping hand from Juric makes time spent communally cooking a wonderful thing. Dragon boating in Quesnel

A view from the stern

Every command designed to move the boat forward

T

he steersperson is a very important member of the dragon boat crew because without him/her, the boat won’t leave the dock. In a canoe, a paddler can change the stroke to make the boat head in different directions but in a dragon boat, the stroke is purely for powering the boat forward. Since a dragon boat is about 10 metres long, paddlers have little influence on direction. Thus, there is a need for a steersperson. A dragon boat is steered with a sweep oar rigged at the rear of the boat, generally on the left side.

It acts like a rudder but looks like it belongs in a giant’s row boat. With that oar, the steersperson can manoeuver the boat around a lake, straight down the race course or gently to the dock. The blade exerts pressure on the water so if it is pulled away from the boat, the bow will go to the left and when pushed towards the boat, the bow will veer right. The language of the boat includes commands that will aid a steersperson. When leaving the dock, “back us down” calls for all to paddle backwards.

“Hold the boat” means to put paddles vertically in the water to prevent drift. And “draw” requests one side to pull water towards the boat to help it side slip in that direction. These words seem foreign to a new paddler but with practice, they do make sense. At any time, the steersperson can override the drummer’s control to ensure safety. Since the dragon boat has a low profile, boat or wind driven waves easily slosh over the gunnel. That means we may need to quickly steer the boat

BCSPCA www.spca.bc.ca

so as to meet larger waves head on. But, even more power rests with this person because he or she is the one to decide if lake conditions are safe for paddling. Like with the drummer, choppy water can cause a sense of instability but none of our steers people has been lost overboard. If you are interested, we’ll teach you how to paddle or steer. Recreational paddling happens every Wednesday until the end of September. What a great way to spend a beautiful evening on the lake. – submitted by Liz-Anne Eyford

FESTIVAL

Food skills are more than just well-cooked meals

from A10 Susan begins her crustless quiche, Emily takes out vegetables, cutting board and knife to start her pasta dish and Ann gathers her ingredients together for blueberry/lemon mini-muffins. It’s a hive of activity where conversations roll around the room, questions about recipes are pondered and food is cooked. “Food security, particularly affordable and nutritious food, underlies all our

programs,” Juric said. “Nutritious snacks and meals are modelled in all program areas and we deliver a number of food skills programs in our commercially licensed kitchen. “We are the only agency in this community offering food skills programs and this is also our third year of partnering with the local Farmers’ Market in the coupon program.” She said they also involve cooking program participants

in the local community garden. Once the food is all prepared, cooked and cooled, the three women package it up to take home, along with their market purchases. An extra set of completed dishes is set aside as Juric is delivering it to a participant who wasn’t well enough to attend the

SATURDAY AUGUST 16

Saturday session. Although all the participants currently are women, Juric is hopeful men will also consider signing up as this program is about nutritious food for all seniors. For information about the coupon program or the cooking programs contact Juric at 250992-9160.

Inglorious, yet loved by God, flaws and all

t has been estimated that humans waste 300 million tons of food each year. This is an outrageous statistic when you consider the millions of people who are starving, some of them to death. Unfortunately, much of this food waste comes not from individual fridges, but directly from farms, where “not-so-perfect” produce is thrown out because it does not meet the aesthetic standards

Lieutenant Laura Van Schaick

Salvation Army that the modern consumer expects and the supermarkets simply will not purchase it.
A French supermarket is setting out to change this. Intermarche, the

third largest grocery store in France, has started a campaign to sell those ‘ugly’ fruits and vegetables and sell them to consumers at a 30 per cent reduced price. They are marketing them as the “Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables,” starring the Grotesque Apple, the Ridiculous Potato and the Hideous Orange, to name a few. The campaign was a huge success, with Intermarche selling out of their less-than-perfect

produce in a matter of days. Just as consumers seem keen to purchase only the most attractive produce, so we humans are bent on being the most attractive people. We shun anything that is out-of-the-ordinary or unique as we seek to fit into the perfect size-0 bikini, or flaunt the most clear complexion. But for us it goes beyond even the aesthetic principles, as we strive to be the most

athletic, the smartest, or the most successful. Anything less than perfection seems a waste, or is it?
Thankfully, God doesn’t think so. God knows that none of us are perfect – not one. In fact, He reminds us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23) But He does not throw us out because of this. Instead, He proved His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

(Rom. 5:8) God accepts us just the way we are – flaws and all. God accepts us as inglorious human beings; shouldn’t we also accept those things which appear to be inglorious in the eyes of the world? Perhaps if we look with God’s eyes, we will see things as they truly are – perfect gifts from God. Laura Van Schaick is a lieutenant with the Salvation Army in Quesnel.

A map of the new transmission line ready to power Northwest B.C.

New transmission line ready to power Construction and commissioning of BC Hydro’s new Northwest Transmission Line is complete and the line is now in service. The 344-kilometre line extends BC Hydro’s power grid north from Terrace into an area rich in mining and clean energy potential. The line will provide clean power to new industrial developments and serve as a connection point for clean power projects, like AltaGas’ Forrest Kerr hydroelectric project. The new Red Chris mine will be the first mine to use power from the line this fall. The line will deliver affordable, reliable and clean energy that will stimulate the economy and provide renewable power to remote northern communities in British Columbia. Local communities will benefit from increased access to clean hydro-electric power, in turn reducing their dependence on local diesel generation, improving service reliability, and resulting in fewer greenhouse gas emissions. The line, which began construction in January 2012, includes 1,100 transmission structures and 2,100 kilometres of wires through some of B.C.’s most remote and challenging terrain. BC Hydro also built a new substation near Bob Quinn Lake for the line and added additional equipment to the Skeena Substation near Terrace to integrate the line into BC Hydro’s system. Over

its three years of construction, the project created about 840 person years of employment. “The Northwest Transmission Line is a nation building project and is vital to the future of our province. It will open up world-class mineral deposits and support the development of new mines and clean energy projects,” Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister Responsible for Core Review Bill Bennett said. “The completion of the Northwest Transmission Line is a major milestone in infrastructure development in BC’s northwest,” President and CEO of BC Hydro Jessica McDonald said. “Realizing the future resource development potential in the region will create tremendous economic benefit for the entire province and will result in long-term, high-paying employment opportunities, including approximately $16 billion in capital investment and more than 3,600 direct permanent jobs in B.C.’s northwest, from major mining projects alone.”

Quick facts • The Northwest Transmission Line (NTL) is a 344-kilometre, 287-kilovolt transmission line that originates from near Terrace and ends at a new substation near Bob Quinn Lake. • The NTL has close to 1,100 transmission structures. Their height, if placed end to end, would be about the same as 78 Empire State buildings;

combined weight of the steel is equivalent to 1.5 Eiffel Towers. • The NTL used about 2,100 kilometers of transmission cable – the equivalent of driving from Terrace to Regina. • BC Hydro is planning to acquire, for a fixed price, a 92 kilometre “extension” being built by Imperial Metals, working closely with Tahltan Nation. This line will run between the new Bob Quinn substation and a new substation BC Hydro is constructing near Tatogga Lake. • Right-of-way clearing and access road construction was undertaken under contract by Nisga’a Nation and five First Nations. • The transmission line was built under a design-procureconstruct contract with the team of Valard Construction and Burns & McDonnell. Construction of the substation was undertaken by Nanaimobased F&M Installations. • The project cost is $746 million. • The Government of Canada has contributed $130 million through the Green Infrastructure Fund for this project. • AltaGas, the project’s anchor tenant, provided $180 million in capital contributions toward this project. The balance is expected to be recovered from a new tariff that will apply to future users of the line. • The line officially went into service on July 15, 2014.

B.C. and China sign MOU

INDUSTRIAL

Efforts to expand export markets for B.C. lumber took a major step forward this week with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding designed to increase the use of woodframe construction in China. Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson and Tan Yueming, Minister of Housing and Urban Rural Development in China’s Zhejiang province, took part in the official signing ceremony via videoconference. The ceremony follows through on a commitment the two governments made last fall during Thomson’s trade mission to China. The Province of Zhejiang had expressed interest in developing wood-frame construction expertise in its growing tourism sector and other applications. In China, memoranda of understanding are the first step toward increasing commercial activity. The MOU calls on the two governments to promote the use of environmentally friendly low-carbon, wood-

frame construction, develop wood-frame construction codes and standards for application in China, and organize exchange visits for government and representatives to share technical and experience and knowledge. B.C. will also increase cooperation with Zhejiang on wood-frame construction research, with a specific focus on local construction needs in Zhejiang province, including government-funded public building projects and home renovations. In 2013, B.C. exported a record $1.4 billion worth of lumber to China, up from $1.1 billion in 2012. Zhejiang in China’s tenth largest province (by population). The OU will remain in effect for the next five years. “This agreement is an important step in our unique and growing relationship with China, one that I’m sure will continue to provide mutual benefits and prosperity for many years to come, Thomson said. “We welcome this agreement and look forward to sharing

experience and knowledge with our Canadian friends, Yueming said. “This MOU will move forward wood-frame construction technology and promote green building and energy efficient construction developments in Zhejiang.

in the 100m backstroke for boys Division 6. As well as individual events the SeaLions also participated in several of the relay events. “We are sitting in the right position to go fast into provincials,” coach McGauley said. “We have a group of girls going to the relay [Lauren Pastachak, Lucy Jesperson, Audrey Jesperson and Casey Fisher] that have a chance at a provincial record.” McGauley is confident in the group of swimmers he has going to provincials and is hoping to take home at least 10 medals. The SeaLions dedicated four months of their time, with eight practices a week to the club. “They can swim up to 20k a week,” said McGauley. “When you aren’t at the pool you are resting. It takes up a lot of your summer and takes a lot of focus and commitment.” After four months of hardwork, practice and a seemingly endless stream of swim meets the SeaLions will take on provincials in Kamloops, Aug. 16 – 17.

Arena cross vs. motocross

Three Quesnel motocross racer's attended the BCNE in Prince George last weekend to race on a arena-size track for the first time. Kourtney Lloyd from Cycle North hosted the first arena cross event during the fall fair. This gave rider's of all ages and skill levels something new that is quite common down south, but for the northerners it was a new experience. Motocross tracks are primarily outdoors, made up of all different types of terrain depending on your geographic location. Weather conditions are another factor motocross racers deal with from extreme heat to snow and rain. Motocross tracks are several km's long through whoops, rhythm sections, corners and jumps and for an average rider, it can take several minutes to complete a lap. Arena Cross is a track built indoors with dirt being hauled in. It is the same style of track that consists of a rhythm section, whoops, corners and large jumps but condensed to a very confined area, forcing racers to change their style of riding. Even though Prince George held the event outside, it was made to the size of arena cross. Pro racer, Ross Johnson from the U.S. came to Prince George a week prior to the event to train with the motocross racers. From watching Johnson race on T.V. in Las Vegas in Supercross events to meeting him in person

and getting training was an experience that Jackson Nickolet and Colton Shepherd valued very much. When asked what they thought of training with a pro on such a small track; they both answered "It was so much fun and worth every minute of it." Racing went Friday and Saturday evening with spectator's filling the bleacher's for this first time event. The crowds were fascinated by the racers as young as five-yearold Blaise Swaan from Quesnel racing in the 50cc class who loves being on his dirt bike competing against other racers his age. For Jackson Nickolet and Colton Shepherd, it was a fast race with laps consisting of 25 seconds per lap. As a spectator it was thrilling every moment they were on the track as you can see the entire track from your seat. The two intermediate racers from Quesnel also raced in the Pro Class with Ross Johnson and Brock Hoyer from Williams Lake to have fun competing at a pro level. It's a fun race and the riders hope to see more northern arena cross in the future. Aug.16 – 17, the BCMA racer's will be back on the road racing in Williams Lake, followed by Chetwynd and Prince George. Quesnel is getting ready to host their final sanctioned event on Sept. 6 – 7. –Submitted by Gerri Shepherd

Quesnel’s Rachel McGowan teamed up with a group of friends to take on the Tough Mudder challenge in Whistler this summer. Trudging through the mud, plunging into icy water, crawling under barbed wire and scaling walls were only some of the physically demanding obstacles to complete at this event. This 18-20 km obstacle course tests participants strength, stamina, teamwork and mental endurance. It’s all smiles for the team covered in mud and sweat with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment at the races end. Question of the Week With the exception of Alberta and Quebec, drivers across Canada can be served with an Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) if they blow 0.05 mg/100ml at the roadside. Should those two provinces fall into line with other provinces? Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer. QUESTION

OF THE WEEK!

Safety Tip: There are many ways to show courtesy behind the wheel, including allowing space for other drivers to change lanes or manouevre. Driver courtesy is contagious, so wave at the next driver who lets you merge in front of them – they may just pay it forward to another driver.

an all-new Focus that arrived (with great fanfare) for the 2012 model year. If the budget is tight, a used Ford Focus can be an excellent vehicle choice. Price Check: 2008 - 2011 Ford Focus (August 2014) Year Edition Expect to Pay Today 2008 SE sedan $5,000 to $8,000 2009 SE sedan $6,500 to $9,500 2010 SE sedan $8,000 to $11,000 2011 SE sedan $10,000 to $13,000 Prices vary depending on a used vehicle’s condition, mileage, usage and history. A complete mechanical check should always be performed by a reliable auto technician prior to purchase. Safety Recalls: 2008 to 2011 Ford Focus: 2008: An incorrectly assembled driver’s airbag may not deploy properly during a frontal crash. All vehicles included in this recall were still in dealer inventory and the driver’s airbag module assembly was replaced. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

(4-horsepower increase over the ‘07) and fuel economy has been improved. The transmission choices were a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. Fuel economy is 8.4 L/100km in the city and highway fuel economy is rated at a phenomenal 5.9 L/100km with the automatic. The manual transmission slightly increases city consumption and reduces highway consumption, so overall the rating is the same. Overall, the coupe performed better than the sedan in IIHS crash tests, as the sedan got lower scores in side impacts. All editions of the ‘08 Focus came with a new design of side curtain air bag that uses a “roll-fold” technology to protect occupants who are resting their heads against a window. The biggest change on the 2009 edition of the Ford Focus was the inclusion of electronic stability control as standard on the SES trim. It was also standard with a new SEL mid-level sedan trim and an option on lower trim levels. The coupe also got a sportier appearance package and a minor improvement in performance. Just minor tweaking of trim packages followed in 2010. In 2011, the coupe edition was discontinued. All of which was in preparation for

The Ford Focus is an affordable and underrated used compact car buy It got a major makeover for the 2008 model year: an all-new coupe (two-door) edition was introduced to complement the stalwart (four-door) sedan. Lamentably, however, the popular in Canada (but not in the US) wagon and (Euro-style) If the budget is hatchback versions of Focus were tight, a used Ford discontinued. Focus can be an The ‘08 refresh of Focus included new front and rear body fascias, improved excellent vehicle sound insulation, a redesigned interior choice. and a new-tech multi-media upgrade. The ‘08 Focus is also an about 45-kg Bob McHugh (100-lb) lighter overall and it’s the weight reduction measures included the elimination of a spare tire, which was replaced by an inflator kit. A real spare tire/wheel could be added as an option. An auto industry landmark was reached when Ford teamed up with Microsoft to offer a unique new multi-media system called Sync, which (for the first time) allowed control of digital music players and cellular phones with voice commands. In addition to the benefit of driver hands-free call taking, the Sync system can also translate text messages into voice messages. The ‘08 Focus, both coupe and sedan, came in S, SE and top-line SES trims. The Sync system was a ($495) option with the SE trim level and standard with SES. On the downside, electronic stability control was not offered on any version of the ‘08 Focus. The most noticeable change from a driving perspective was the reduction in outside noise and chassis vibration. The quieter cabin is the result of sound deadening improvements that include the use of thicker glass. The steering column in this Focus is also mounted on a stronger crossbeam beneath the instrument panel, which helps eliminate vibrations. The only engine (in Canada) was a 2.0-litre, dual-overhead-cam, 4-cylinder engine, which came with a new air intake and cooling systems. It produces 140-horsepower
