Knot in our backyard Invasive species taking root on South Vancouver Island Drew McLachlan News staff

The Capital Regional District is facing an invasion of knotweed, a bamboo-like plant described by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as “one of the world’s worst invasive species.” The Coastal Invasive Species Committee (CISC) has been working with local municipalities in an attempt to prevent the introduction of knotweed to the CRD. CISC treated 120 sites of infestation last year, as well as 67 in 2012. Executive director Rachelle McElroy cited an increased awareness of the plant as the reason for treatment almost doubling. “Knotweed is quite widespread in the region, but not to the point where we can’t get ahead of it,” McElroy said. “More people are reporting it as they become more aware of what it looks like and the kind of damage it can do, and more people are learning that we offer free treatment.” PlEASE SEE: Knotwood can grow through concrete, Page A6

Salmon returns not as simple as boom or bust The plight of the Pacific salmon has been an important news story over the past few years, and often one of the big talking points is the small numbers that return to spawn every year. However, there is a lot more to the discussion than a single number. “When we’re talking about salmon returning, we’re actually talking about five species,” says Dr. Scott Hinch of the University of British Columbia. “Not all of them come back at the same time. It’s very species-specific as to when they return.” For example, the pink salmon return every second year to the Fraser River instead of every year, whereas the sockeye salmon, perhaps the most well-known species, returns each year. The other species of salmon in our Pacific waters are the coho, Chinook and chum, though the pink salmon is the most abundant, according to Hinch. “Pink salmon don’t require the same spawning and rearing habitat that other species do,” he says. “They don’t rear for long in fresh water, and they tend to head to the ocean shortly after the eggs hatch.” This has an effect on the size of the fish that travel to the ocean and thus their survival possibilities. Hinch points out that sockeye salmon tend to stay in the large lakes they’re born near for about a year, making them larger when they do start their migration to the

Another thing to keep in mind when looking at the number of salmon is their life cycle, which actually moves in a four-year rhythm for sockeye. “Every four years we see a really big run of sockeye,” Hinch says. “In 2010 we saw one of the largest runs of Fraser River sockeye in a century. Thus, four years later (in 2014), we’re expecting to see another abundant run, though exactly how abundant is unclear. In the third year of this cycle the run is still fairly big, but in years one and two, it is quite small. That cycle seems to persist.” Aside from these natural abundance cycles, there are a few things that contribute to a large or small return of a specific species of salmon, including the number of predators, poor health and poor feeding conditions which can be affected by climate patterns like El Nino. Year-to-year changes in ocean and freshwater conditions caused by global climate change are also affecting feeding, growth and predator numbers. The Pacific Salmon Foundation, in partnership with Hinch, UBC and Kintama Research, recently released the results of a four-year study looking at sockeye salmon smolts during their migration to the sea from their rearing area in Chilko Lake. This was the first-ever study to track wild sockeye smolts (young salmon that have begun changing from freshwater to saltwater fish) through their migration via acoustic tags. Through the study, they discovered that many of the smolts disappeared during the first few days of their migration, which Hinch attributes to predators. “The water there is very clear, and the predators are generally visual feeders,” he says. “Once they get through the clear water, survivorship during the remainder of their freshwater migration was very good.” The team followed the smolts over 1,000 kilometres to the northern end of Vancouver Island. “We were the first to track this stage in this number,” says Hinch, noting that as of this spring, over 2,000 fish were tagged. The Pacific Salmon Foundation is currently working on the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project in partnership with Seattle-based Long Live the Kings, another organization committed to the protection of wild salmon. The project looks at the factors affecting the survival of the young salmon in the Salish Sea, and will build off of the results of the Chilko study in their research. “We are trying to determine the limiting factors of salmon production,” says Foundation CEO Dr. Brian Riddell. “This is the largest initiative ever undertaken; there have been thousands of studies before, but no comprehensive study.” The project will focus on the Strait of Georgia, where the the abundance of coho and Chinook salmon are low. The Foundation notes that it’s at less than one-tenth of the levels seen in the past. Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins will seek a third term in this Novem-

ber’s municipal elections. Desjardin said over the last three years council has been weighed down by many regional issues – such as policing and sewage – and now it’s time to focus on specific township issues such as economic development. “We’ve been able to accomplish a lot this term,” Desjardins said, calling it three years of “heavy lifting.” “We (council) haven’t achieved everything we wanted to do, but I

don’t think you ever do.” Desjardins said over the next four years she’d like to find a solution to the region’s sewage dilemma and get a shovel in the ground on the Village Core Project. Desjardins was first elected to township council in 2005, and has been mayor since 2008. The mayor isn’t the only council member who has decided to run again. Three councillors – Meagan Brame,

Tim Morrison and David Schinbein – have decided to seek re-election, while Dave Hodgins, Lynda Hundleby and Robert McKie are undecided. Municipal election day is Nov. 15. klaird@blackpress.ca

At just over three months, Mia is one smart puppy. She stops at every curb and door she comes across and is now learning to do the same for escalators. On a sunny Tuesday morning, Mia weaves through a precariously designed obstacle of cones, baby gates, tissues, balls and other natural street distractions during her B.C. Guide Dogs class in the lacrosse box of Topaz Park. It’s the life of a guide dog in training, but when it’s play time, there’s no mistaking Mia as just another playful pup, jumping and rolling with the rest of her class. “It’s all work on the leash and play time can only be off lead, when we allow it,” says Pierre Gagne, one half of Mia’s puppy raising team along with partner Marlene Homan. Gagne is self-employed and works from his Victoria home, which make him and Homan ideal candidates. It’s their first time raising a puppy for the B.C. Guide Dogs and the organization is looking for more puppy raisers in the Greater Victoria area as three litters become available for both September and October. Retired couples are often best suited, or others in a position such as Gagne’, says local puppy raising supervisor Laura Mahoney. Classes are outside at Topaz but Mahoney is hoping to move indoors if the space is made avail-

Other cities are able to use donated facility time, such as in

churches, but with a limited budget, the local B.C. Guide Dogs chapter will remain outside for the foreseeable future. As for the puppies, they’re placed with ideal candidates for puppy raising at seven weeks old and live with the puppy raiser up

to 18 months. The dogs are actually bred by B.C. Guide Dogs in Delta, a cross between lab and retriever. They graduate through a series of programs and ideally become a guide dog for vision impairment. Should the animals fall short of the rigid requirements, they are still

At 18 years old, Logan Anderson found himself on a plane, headed for Nova Scotia, with only a backpack filled with camping gear. For Anderson, who suffers from depression and social anxiety, making the commitment to travel alone across the country, and far outside his comfort zone, was a daunting task. But after spending a month camping along the Atlantic Ocean, Anderson brought home a new, more confident mindset. “The change in environment, being in nature, it was comforting in ways that regular counselling wasn’t,” says Anderson, a Victoria resident. “It’s a different kind of therapy.” Now at 24, and having spent his summers traveling North America and Europe, Anderson wants to bring others suffering from mental health issues into that same headspace. For the past six months, Anderson has been laying out plans for Halcyon Backpacking, a travel company focussed on well-being. His goal is to have fiveto 25- day excursions through nature and cities, led by not only a tour guide, but a professional counsellor, who would lead group sessions around a campfire or on the lake after a hike. Each travel group would be made of people suffering from the same set of mental health issues, though he notes the goal of the trips is to create a fun atmosphere rather

Puppets bring International Day of Peace to Capital City Drew McLachlan News staff

Local puppeteer Tim Gosley is teaming up with the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria to bring the Puppets for Peace festival to the city this fall. Coinciding with the UN International Day of Peace, the festival uses the unique craft to promote social change. “Sometimes people think puppets are all light and fluffy, and they often are, but there’s a depth to it as well,” Gosley said. “We’re trying to create a balance between entertainment and fun and our theme of bringing the world together.” The festival begins Sept. 19, 1 p.m. at the University of Victoria, where puppeteers will be joined by the Pacific Peoples’ Partnership for a panel on how puppets and other performance art can be used to promote social change. Other events include an anarchist puppet/ poet slam at Roxy Theatre, celebrity signings by Karen Prell of Fraggle Rock and Judith Lawrence of Mr. Dressup and screenings of puppet short films both family-friendly and adult-oriented. Workshops and performances will be held all day Sept. 20 at the Bay Centre. Styles include Muppeteering, First Nations puppetry, Chinese shadow puppets and Javanese Dhalang, which involves

where a multitude of mini-shows and activities will be held. Gosley, who grew up in Victoria, originally studied drama, but drifted towards puppeteering after discovering he was “too shy” to be an actor. Upon moving to Toronto, he landed spots on Fraggle Rock, Canadian Sesame Street and Wumpa’s World, where he earned a Gemini Award for his work as Tiguak the polar bear. Since returning to Victoria, he’s shifted his focus to more “artsy” puppet

forms, including threedimensional shadow puppetry. “Defining puppetry is like trying to define folk music,” Gosley said. “Most people have an image in their head of what it is, but it encompasses so many genres that there isn’t really an adequate explanation for it.” Puppets for Peace runs from Sept. 19 to 21, with events catering to a variety of age groups. Booze, boats don’t mix well As temperatures continue to soar on south Vancouver Island, staying cool is important. However, the Canadian Safe Boating Council is reminding all boat owners that drinking and boating is illegal and unwise. According to CSBC, about 40 per cent of all boating-related fatalities are alcoholrelated. The CSBC, along with law enforcement agencies across the country are using this month to remind all boaters, including sailboats, canoes and kayaks to raise awareness about boating and drinking with Operation Dry Water. In the second year of the campaign, Operation Dry Water aims to reduce the number of alcohol-related fatalities on Canadian waterways as well as provide a visible deterrent to drinking and boating. With several gorgeous lakes and miles of ocean to choose from, Island boaters and visitors have plenty of opportunities to cool off without having to resort to alcohol. According to the Criminal Code of Canada, a boater can be charged with impaired operation of a vessel if their blood alcohol concentration exceeds the .08 threshold while operating a vessel. A first offence can see the boater liable for a fine of $600. A second offence carries a 14-day prison sentence, and a third offence extends that to 90 days. With the number of vessels plying the waters off Victoria, it is imperative that all vessel operators be alert to their surroundings. Be dry, be safe.

CRA audits targeting the wrong people Re: Transperancy goes both ways (Our View, Aug. 8) The criteria for auditing charities for their political activities is timely and troubling. The Canada Review Agency has created a team of auditors to audit the political activities of selected charities. Some 52 audits are underway and or concluded, with eight more to be launched by 2016, drawing upon a special $13.4 million fund. Ironically, this is the same CRA that has cut staff employed in chasing down wealthy individuals and corporations that hide from $5 billion to $8 billion annually in

While the BCSPCA is well known for teaching animal care and safety at its youth camps, it’s hoping children will walk away with another important skill this summer – empathy. The group’s Among Animals summer camp program, created last year, runs for a week and is open to ages six and seven. “That’s the age when we really have to start teaching them about empathy,” said Breeanna McDonald, camp co-ordinator. “They’re interested in animals, a lot of them have pets at home, but they haven’t started thinking about the animals’ point of view.” Along with educational activities like “canine safety tag” and making crafts like cat toys and “dog popsicles,” kids also get to interact with the shelter’s cats and other small animals. They also help with cleaning rat cages and see what kind of care owning a pet involves. “A part of the program is changing their minds about what kind of pet they want,” McDonald said. “All the kids come in wanting a dog, which of course is a lot of work, but a few have ended up coming back to the shelter and adopting a rat.” The summer camp is partly based on the BCSPCA’s Kindness Counts lesson plan, which also teaches animal empathy in kindergarten to Grade 2 classes, but also

s the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society prepares to celebrate two decades of bringing people together through dragon boating, Wednesday’s 20th Anniversary Gala Fundraiser honoured three individuals who have spent their lives and careers giving back. Held at the Inn at Laurel Point, the gala included cultural entertainment, auction, wine tasting and a reception, in addition to the presentation of Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society Honourary Life Memberships to three local businessmen and philanthropists: Don Yuen, Mel Cooper and Cedric Steele.

Fifty years ago, Don Yuen founded his very first Fairway Market store on the philosophy of providing quality, value and a commitment to community. He has lived that philosophy ever since, growing the company to 10 stores on the Island and hundreds of employees, all the while supporting the people and communities that support Fairway, including a long-time commitment to the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival. “Don Yuen and Fairway Markets were integral not only to the founding of dragon boating as a sport in Victoria but in maintaining the viability and ongoing success of the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival Society. His son Doug has continued that support on behalf of his father and the Yuen family with a recent gift of $80,000 which helped found the Fairway Gorge Paddling Club Society.” For his considerable business and community successes, which began as a child working in his family’s grocery store in southern China, Don Yuen recently received a lifetime achievement award from the Ethno Business Council of B.C. Throughout the last 50 years, Don Yuen and Fairway Markets have placed “great value on the communities our stores inhabit (and we) make it our mission to support and enhance these neighbourhoods through sustainable initiatives and store programs.”

Long-time broadcaster and the former owner of C-FAX 1070 radio station, Mel Cooper has embodied the philosophy of community philanthropy for decades, including contributing much to the success of the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival. Recognizing Cooper as a true friend of the festival, his nomination for honourary membership notes that “Mel was instrumental from the beginning in supporting the growth of the festival. His connections with media and with other businesses in the community helped in growing the festival.” Cooper, who spent many years at the helm of the local children’s charity C-FAX Santas Anonymous, has indeed contributed to many aspects of the community. Recognized as “a consummate volunteer and community leader,” Cooper was honoured as the inaugural recipient of the Leadership Victoria Lifetime Achievement Award. He has served as chair of the TELUS Community Board since 2007, is an Honourary Citizen of Victoria and an Honourary Director and Special Advisor to the David Foster Foundation. Cooper’s community leadership for initiatives such as Expo ‘86 in Vancouver and the 1994 Victoria Commonwealth Games contributed to his receiving both the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia. Most recently, Cooper received United Way’s Honourary Life Membership for his part in making life better for Greater Victoria’s more vulnerable citizens over the past 40 years.

Another early supporter of the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival, Cedric Steele has been instrumental over the years in the society’s ability to forge community relationships, especially with the Canadian Navy and CFB Esquimalt. In addition to celebrating with the festival for many of the last 20 years, including the eye-doting ceremony and gala dinner, “with his help we were able to start the long-term community partnership with CFB Esquimalt.” President of Cedric Steele & Associates Ltd., a commercial real estate company he founded in 1972, and owner of Prospect Lake Golf Course since 1974, Steele has served the community as president of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Glenlyon-Norfolk School board of governors, chairman of corporate fundraising for Timmy’s Telethon, as a board member of the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health and the Victoria Police Board. He also served on the Tourism Victoria executive and the advisory board to the Faculty of Business at the University of Victoria. Appointed an Honorary Captain in May 1997, Steele has been involved with the Canadian Forces Liaison Council since 1994 and actively promotes a closer relationship between the local business community and the Armed Forces.

Weekend festival celebrates 20 years Back in 1994, when no dragon boats trained in Victoria, the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival emerged as part of the festivities surrounding the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria. In commemoration of Hong Kong Day, the Victoria Chinese Commerce Association arranged for dragon boats to come to Victoria from Vancouver for a one-day exhibition race. With an enthusiastic response from dragon boaters, fans and supporters, the festival quickly grew into a three-day celebration of Asian sports and culture, today drawing as many as 80,000 people to the harbour to cheer on teams, sample global cuisines, enjoy music and entertainment and raise funds for the BC Cancer Foundation. Getting the whole family behind the wheel for fun British Columbians start driving at an early age. We can barely walk on two feet before many of us are pushing replica models over the carpet at home, complete with self-generated engine sound effects. Then it’s dodgem cars at the fun fair or pedal cars like those that youngsters will be revving up at the 2014 Vancouver Island Motor Gathering on Sunday at the Viscount Aero Centre, at 9800 McDonald Park Road, in Sidney. Dodgem cars are not the recommended way to learn how to drive as the intent is to ram into as many others as possible! Despite the moniker, that’s what I found to be the aim when I got behind the wheel of what were called bumper cars back in the 1960s. However, the pedal cars from the Tom Thumb Safety Program teach traffic and pedestrian safety to children from five to eight years old and thus intro-

duces hundreds of kids every year to the joys of being at the wheel. Of course, the annual Vancouver Island event, presented by the German Auto Import Network (GAIN) is not Dodgem just for kids. It promises cars are not the four-wheel fun for the entire family and raises recommended way money for the Children’s to learn how to Health Foundation of drive. Splish, splash diesel dash to ride a wave Summer. What a wonderful time of year, heading out on the open road with family. Okay, it isn’t all fun and games, especially with 11-year-old and nine-year-old boys bickering in the back seat, but for the most part it can be enjoyable. For the first time I recently decided to take a road trip to one of my many car-related events. Usually I fly to a vehicle launch, but this time I thought I would take some extra time, and the family, on the road from Vancouver to Portland, Oregon. While I attended the 2015 Dodge Challenger event at the Portland International Raceway, my family could take in some of the local sites.

I checked in throughout the day and the comments were universal. “This is the best waterpark ever!” As I wrapped up the day at the track, I did get a frantic call from my wife “The Jeep has lost power, I can’t drive over 30 mph, what should I do?” The gang at Chrysler jumped to attention and before I knew it, I was on the road with another Jeep Diesel and being accompanied by two PR reps in a 2015 Challenger. From the track to my stranded family took over an hour; in total they sat at a Shell station for two hours waiting. To pass the time, the kids ate what they wanted from the Shell convenience store and taking “selfies” seemed to do the trick. Once we arrived, we realized a Dodge dealership was literally five minutes up the road!

Day Four

With a belly full of Voodoo Doughnuts, including Double Bubble flavour, fruit loops, coco puffs and good old chocolate, we were ready to go. It took a while for our repaired Jeep to arrive so on we went to sample more tax-free shopping and some of Portland’s

Grand Cherokee is solid in heavy rain, on highway many food trucks. When the Jeep did arrive, it turns out the Diesel went into “limpmode,” enabling the driver to get to the next dealership. The fix was a simple computer program flash, which took no time at all. Regardless, we were on the road, heading to Seattle for some underground fun.

Day Five

After a great night in Seattle, we woke up to rain, lots of rain, so we went underground to visit the old, hidden city of Seattle. These tours take visitors on a walk through the ruins of Seattle after the massive fire of 1886 and the rebuilding that took place. Seattle is built on top of the old city; there are tunnels and abandoned sections of buildings there to explore. Time to head home. The Grand Cherokee never set another wheel wrong; it was fantastic in the heavy rain and very solid on the highway. After 1,300 plus kilometres behind the wheel, I averaged 8.5L/100km.

PAC parents offer tips on transition back to class

September marks the biggest transition of the year for students, and while the switch from endless summer nights to six hours days in the classroom is never painless for them, or their families, some local parents shared their own tips for making back to school time a little smoother. Audrey Smith, vice-president of Spectrum community school PAC, said that one of the first steps should be physical preparation. For elementary students, this means buying and labeling school supplies. For middle and high school students, this means going over reading lists. Going over supplies and books also helps get students into a school mindset. Reading lists for most ministrymandated courses are available online at each school’s website. Kyla Ward, a director of the

Victoria Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (VCPAC), said that the best way for a parent to prepare their child for school is to ask questions about what they’re wondering. “Just to clear up any concerns we (parents) don’t often get answers from kids unless we ask open-ended questions,” Ward said. “If we just give solid info, it’s sometimes wrong, and that can leave them disappointed.” Sleeping schedule is also important, and though younger kids are may be more influenced by their parents’ rules, Smith said that teenagers just need to be given a reason to get up early, so its helps to plan activities for the morning. With younger kids, Ward said that its important to help them deal with things not going exactly as planned, and with the ongoing labour disputes, its unclear if the start of the school year will go as, or when, planned.

“I’m still working on it myself,” Smith said, “to help my own kids be aware of what they are planning on studying and to be ready to do some ‘pre-homework’ if the semester doesn’t start on time. If that happens, they may have to rush through their curriculum, so students who’ve already looked ahead are going to be more prepared.” Ward said that some parents are talking about different temporary solutions should the strike continue into the school year, but all parents should keep in mind a few things they can do at home. “That 15 to 20 minutes of home reading a day is key,” she said. “Engage with kids about their day, have that conversation or dialogue around the dinner table, and look for learning opportunities in everyday activity. If your younger ones are helping you cook, have them measure ingredients out.” reporter@vicnews.com

Make lunchtime fun time, says expert Daniel Palmer News staff

Kids can often be much pickier eaters than their parents, particularly when it comes to healthy options. But there are ways to pack a healthy lunch and get kids excited about eating well – even if they don’t realize they’re doing it, says Sarah Voldeng, a registered nutritionist and founder of Absolutely Nutrition in Victoria. “Eating creative is really important: when packing fruit and vegetables, make it fun for kids by cutting food out into different shapes, or making it a bit more decorative,” Voldeng says. Including yogurt or salad dips is one simple way to make vegetable and fruit healthy and exciting at the same time, she says. A second tip? Parents tend to skimp on protein when packing school lunches, often forgetting that plenty of protein helps stabilize blood sugar. “Protein is good for focus and stamina during the long school day, whether it’s meat, cheese, yogurt or other vegetarian options, that’s a substantial part of

a healthy meal for kids,” Voldeng says. A lot of parents tend to go “carb-heavy” with packed lunches and snacks (think crackers and chips) while forgetting about the importance of protein, says the nutritionist. Last, don’t forget about healthy fats. Avocado, salmon, tuna, or fatty seeds like pumpkin and sunflower do the trick while satisfying that snacking itch. “Stay away from foods that will cause fluctuation in behaviour, and foods definitely do that,” Voldeng says. “Putting in something that’s too high in refined sugars will speed kids up and cause them to crash too quickly. Having things ready the night before is a big help.” Parents can help by promoting self care as well, that means letting kids choose new shoes and snack kits for school. “They feel empowered and a sense of freedom when they can untie or unvelcro their own shoes. … Make extra time for those kind of things that they may need to do at school. If your school has indoor shoes and outdoor shoes, let them choose a new pair of shoes – how exciting is that?” Those few small things will help them feel empowered and special during their time away from their parents. Parents’ positive attitude goes along way to happy school days First day of school jitters are a normal right of passage, but for kids experiencing their first day of school ever, parents can do a lot to set the tone for years of happy school days ahead. “Send the message that you’re confident,” said Oak Bay Parent Owned Preschool teacher Amy Grbavec. “If you exude an air of confidence about preschool or school, your child will feel that and they will have the same confidence about school.” As an early childhood educator for 23 years, Grbavec has some experience with ensuring a smooth transition to school. “As parents, we’re excited about this new stage in our child’s life. BACK TO SCHOOL Staples’ Stock the Lockers reaches out to those in need Angela Cowan News staff

With back-to-school season fast approaching, Staples is once again collecting donations for their Stock the Lockers fundraiser. The office supply retailer has partnered with a number of elementary and middle schools, as well as the 1Up Single Parent Resource Centre, to ensure that no child goes without the necessities when school starts up again. Staples is collecting cash donations until the first day of school. Proceeds from those efforts will purchase a back-to-school kit for any child whose family can’t afford it. The way it works is parents let their schools know if they need help, then the schools send a list of every child in need to Staples. The store, in turn, sends out the kits, which can be delivered anonymously through the

schools. The kits, part of the company’s School Tools program, are new this year for Staples stores in Western Canada. They give parents the chance to buy a put-together pack at a fixed price for their kids while avoiding the shopping chaos that abounds in late August. As well as binders, pens and art supplies, the kits also contain coupons from many local businesses including Pizza Hut, the YMCA and Pita Pit. For Gerry Denis, general manager of the Langford Staples, giving back to the community is one of the most important things the company does. “Whenever you’re dealing with education, it’s so important to support any causes that lead to better education and equal opportunities,” he says. Farm markets are multiplying around the province, helped by a program to improve food preparation skills.

Farm market coupon program set to expand The B.C. government has expanded its program to offer coupons worth $15 a week for farm market produce to pregnant women, seniors and lowincome families who take a nutrition course. Health Minister Terry Lake announced an additional $750,000 has been added to the program for its third year of province-wide operation, in addition to $4 million provided in 2012 and 2013. The program runs July through October, as harvest comes off local farms. It is administered by the B.C. Association of Farmers’ Markets. Participants take a free nutrition and skills program that includes cooking, canning and preserving, and are issued weekly coupons that can be used like cash at participating farm markets to buy locally grown fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs, dairy products, nuts and herbs. The program is expanded this year to include additional farm markets in Maple Ridge, White Rock, Clearwater, Salmon Arm, Lytton, Fort St. John, Terrace, Whistler, Nanaimo, Qualicum Beach, Port Alberni and Victoria. A total of 49 markets around the province take part, teamed with local social service agencies that offer the courses. Lake said the program helps people make a transition to a healthier diet that lessens their risk of chronic diseases, while increasing the customer base for local farmers who sell directly to the public. The nutrition coupon program began as a pilot in 2007, funded by the social services ministry. Its goal for this year is to support 10,000 people. Other participating farm markets and community service agencies are in Abbotsford, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Langley, Mission, New Westminster, Port Coquitlam, Surrey, 100 Mile House, Armstrong, Cranbrook, Kamloops, Kelowna, Penticton, Nelson, Revelstoke, Vernon, Hazelton, Houston, Prince George, Quesnel, Smithers, Courtenay, Duncan and Salt Spring Island. Beware the dangers of staging a house when listing it for sale. While it’s obvious that when selling, the house and yard should be looking their best, there can be misconceptions when “staging” a house for show. Yes, the house should be cleaned up and looking tickety-boo. And yes, furniture borrowed or new may be necessary. Rather, it’s more important to be realistic in presenting the house. Inserting a proper dining room table in the dining room would be an upgrade to the billiards table kept by a bachelor who is now selling his one-bedroom condo. Just don’t go overboard. “Sometimes staging, as it’s known, is very helpful to make a house look good but oftentimes it can be unrealistic, so you have to be careful,” said Roland Stillings.
