Family escapes as cabin explodes C A RO LYN G R AN T

A family vacation at a mountain cabin ended in near tragedy on Wednesday, August 13, after a propane explosion destroyed a cabin. Cpl. Ayers of the Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment says members from

both his detachment and the Kimberley Detachment attended the scene at Whitetail Lake, at kilometre 26 on the Finlay Creek Forest Service Road. “Some time after 4 in the morning on August 13 one of the rental cabins at White-

tail exploded,” Ayers told the Bulletin. “The roof blew off and the cabin is demolished.” Ayers says two families from Britain had rented what he described as a duplex type cabin. He says in spite of the se-

verity of the explosion, all eight people were accounted for. “One boy, 10 to 12 years old, was flown to Calgary with lacerations, but not life-threatening,” Ayers said. Ayers says the boy was actually blown out the sec-

ond floor window when the cabin exploded. He was found by neighbouring tourists from another cabin. “It was just very, very fortunate that he survived, that everyone got out,” Ayers said. “It could have been tragic.”

He says that police are fairly certain that propane was the cause of the explosion. “We can’t prove it — there’s nothing left of the cabin — but we are confident that it was a propane explosion.”

The next workshops will kick off in October.

Program puts low need clients in touch with nurses by phone ARNE PETRYSHEN Townsman Staff

A program that helps independent seniors stay at home longer is having a positive impact in the region, according to Interior Health. The Surveillance Nurse program uses remote tele-

phone checks to connect nurses with clients. It was implemented six months ago. Sharon Whitby, Home Health Practice Lead for IHA said the program helps clients remain in their own homes and avoid hospital admissions. “It’s care management and

support by telephone and connecting with these clients on a regular basis depending on their needs,” Whitby explained. “They might be calling them weekly, monthly, but they have to touch base with them every three months to see how they are doing. When

they do connect with this family or their support group, they work with the client to develop a health improvement plan based on what the client feels is the greatest need at the moment.”

Two leaders of an polygamous religious community in B.C. have been charged for the second time with practising polygamy. Winston Blackmore and James Oler, who lead separate factions in the community of Bountiful, one hour west of Cranbrook, were each charged Wednesday with one count of polygamy. Winston Blackmore was in Cranbrook on Thursday, and gave a statement on the matter to Mike Turner of Global News. “Yesterday being August the 13, 2014, after learning that the RCMP was looking for me, I went into the local detachment of the RCMP in Creston at 7 o’clock, at which time I surrendered my passport, and was charged with the same charge I was charged with five and a half years ago — that being polygamy, and nothing more,” Blackmore said. “Anyone who knows anything at all about the original doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter Day Saints, which is the doctrine I follow, knows good and well that the principle of plural marriage and congregational living, where people work together for the good of the whole with a common view of taking care of everybody is part of that doctrine. Those are basic foundations of my faith. “There is really nothing more to be said.” Blackmore also told Turner that “I certainly get tired of this constant legal battle.”

Today we have a beautiful white clapboard two story building that houses an intimate 83 seat theatre upstairs and a 1,000 square foot dance studio on the main floor. The main floor also houses an office, a green room/ kitchen, a makeup room and four washrooms. “In its life, the theatre space has hosted close to a hundred plays, hundreds of musical events as well as seminars, movies, poetry readings and even City Council meetings. The Studio has been the home to a large number of dance classes of all persuasions, martial arts classes, yoga classes, weddings, celebrations and even punk rock concerts. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — There may be itsy-bitsy aliens among us. Scientists say seven microscopic particles collected by NASA’s comet-chasing spacecraft, Stardust, appear to have originated outside our solar system. If confirmed, this would be the world’s first sampling of contemporary interstellar dust. The dust collectors were exposed to space in the early 2000s and returned to Earth in 2006. Since then, dozens of scientists worldwide led by physicist Andrew Westphal of the University of California, Berkeley have hunted for specks and analyzed the ``precious’’ grains found. The team was assisted by 30,000 citizen-scientists who scanned more than 1 million images in search of elusive tracks made by incoming particles. Westphal says the suspected interstellar particles are surprisingly diverse. Some are fluffy like snowflakes. The findings were published Thursday in the journal Science.

Anderson finds Titanic connection on China cruise Tre vor Cr awley

After a lifetime of studying and preserving high-end passenger train cars, Garry Anderson called it a career with the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel in 2013. Now retired, he has the time to make all the trips he’s planned over the years. One of the latest trips includes an upcoming trip to China in April, which is a group event organized through Uniglobe Direct Travel. Though he’s no longer involved with the Rail Museum, his interest in heritage preservation hasn’t waned.

The group trip includes a trans-Pacific voyage on the ‘Millennium’ cruise ship, which features some interesting historical preservation, as well as a personal connection to his family heritage, according to Anderson. His grandmother was scheduled to sail on the Titanic for the return voyage from New York back to Southampton en route to Europe, however, that didn’t happen after the ship struck an iceberg and sank in April 1912. The Titanic had a sister ship, the Olympic, which was finished a year earlier and

sailed until 1935 before being scrapped in 1937. The Olympic featured the ‘A la Carte Restaurant’ which had wood paneling preserved after the ship’s demolition, and is now a part of the Millennium cruise ship — the same vessel that will carry the Uniglobe travel group across the Pacific Ocean to China. “I found a reference to an Olympic restaurant — which is a heritage restaurant in the ship — specially placed with panels from the A la Carte restaurant of the Olympic, which is the sister ship of the Titanic, built a year earlier in 1911,” said Anderson.

“My interest stems from the fact that my grandmother — my mother’s mother — was 18 at the time and her parents were scheduled to take the Titanic back on it’s return maiden voyage…” After the Olympic was scrapped in 1937, a hotel bought the wood panels and used them for decades until the construction of the Millennium cruise ship in the late 1990s. “They’re absolutely spectacular panels,” said Anderson. “French walnut, in many ways similar to some of the cars we have with inlays, figuring, pearls. It’s a spectacu-

lar thing and it brings back the memories of what we had to do to restore the cars at the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel.” The project to incorporate the panels into the heritage restaurant are reminiscent of the work Anderson did with the Royal Alexandra Hall. “The Royal Alexandra Hall was more similar because the contents weren’t damaged, they just needed to be provided a new shell,” he said. “In the Olympic restaurant A la Carte’s case, the panels were already in good condition, coming right out of the ship and into the hotel.

It didn’t suffer the ravages of time, they weren’t exposed to sun, rain or ups and downs of weather, so they were in as good of condition as could be expected right from the end days of the ship, which was about 25 years of use.” The trip to China, which is a group event, includes a river cruise before a return trip from Shanghai back to Vancouver on the Millennium ship. There will be an information session on the trip on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Contact Kathy Holmes at kathy@ uniglobedirect.com for more information on the group tour.

Nurse program creates Wife of polygamous leader says charges violate her religious freedom rapport with clients Canadian Press

LISTER, B.C. — A wife of a polygamous leader of a small religious commune near Creston, one hour west of Cranbrook, says polygamy charges laid this week against the leaders of Bountiful violate her religious freedom. Marsha Chatwin, whose name appears on an indictment in a list of Winston Blackmore’s alleged wives, says the criminal

charges that were announced this week are “ridiculous.’’ Blackmore and James Oler have each been charged with polygamy, while Oler and two other people are also accused of unlawfully removing a child from Canada. Chatwin says she doesn’t feel persecuted or oppressed in her community, where about 1,000 people follow a fundamentalist form of Mormonism that still

condones polygamy. She insists Bountiful is not isolated and she says the community is the most open that it’s ever been. Bountiful split into two separate factions more than a decade ago, with Blackmore leading one half of the community and Oler leading the other, though Chatwin says Oler hasn’t been in that position for some time.

Shelter has to euthanize bear cub rescued near Kimberley C AROLYN GRANT Daily Bulletin

The story of the bear cub, rescued and sent to the Norther Lights Wildlife Society after being hit by a car between Kimberley and Marysville has come to a sad end. The bear had to be euthanized after it was discovered that his injuries were severe. The bear was rescued by two local sisters, Stephanie and Manuela Hirn, when he was found on the highway last Thursday. Stephanie told the Bulletin that she received word from the Wildlife Society on Thursday, August 14. “Unfortunately this story turned sad. Here is what the Northern Lights Wildlife Society said: “The beautiful little

S. Hirn

Unfortunately the bear cub had to be euthanized. bear that arrived here yesterday from Cranbrook had to be euthanized. “My heart is in piec-

es knowing what pain he must have endured. His right leg was shattered at the elbow destroying his growth

plates. His upper jaw was badly fractured and he lost all his front teeth. As this was also a yearling and not a cub of the year, that meant he lost his permanent teeth. We all agreed that these injuries would not allow a return to the wild and even a life in human care would mean a life in pain and subsequently decided to let him go. “Still, trying to rescue him was the right choice, as left in the wild he would have died a long painful death of infection and starvation. Thanks to all that cared enough not to let that happen.” Stephanie says that all the funds raised so far for the bear’s care will still go to the Wildlife Society to help then with their animal rescue work.

Continued from page 1 The idea for the program came from a similar program out of Fraser Health, which has been running for a number of years. Whitby said the program has been successful in helping clients maintain their health at a lower level of need. “We decided we would incorporate it into Interior Health. Based on the Fraser model we put that into place for our Health Authority,” she said. In March 2013 they did a pilot project in Kelowna. When that went smoothly, they put it in in Kamloops. From there they hired five more surveillance nurses for Interior Health. “They came on board for January and February time period,” she said. “Across Interior Health we have seven Surveillance Nurses. They will be covering off all the home health communities who have the lower needs clients in current case loads.” Those clients are being shifted from the case manager that currently checks on them. “These are great achievements for both clients and the health care system,” Whitby said. “We know most people prefer to stay in their own home to self-manage when they

Surveillance Nurse Tina Pole are able.” Surveillance Nurses make calls to the longterm clients to check how they are doing at least once every three months, though more if required. Clients may also call the nurse when they have questions or need assistance. Surveillance Nurses are located in Williams Lake, Kamloops, Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton, Cranbrook and Castlegar. They support approximately 280 clients. “The regular calls ensure we are being proactive and supporting clients so they continue to be lower needs for as

long as possible,” said Whitby. “For example they may need encouragement to increase their activity level, to socialize more, or to quit smoking. Or they may benefit from other support services.” “The first phone call is usually the most crucial. It’s quite amazing how quickly we can develop a rapport with our clients over the phone,” said Tina Pole, one of the seven Surveillance Nurses. “We are able to find out what supports they have from family or friends and how they are going to be able to maintain or improve their health.”

Enthusiastic reception to many festival events A

MIKE REDFERN Part I of II

fter eight days of hard work, hot weather, and great entertainment, the first Kimberley Kaleidoscope arts and culture festival closed on a high note with an estimated 250 people at the Saturday Night Blues Party barking and howling with delight in response to Texan bluesman Donald Ray Leonard’s urging from the Centre 64 outdoor stage. It was a hot, spirited party to end a hot weather week of varied entertainment and workshop activities. When it was all over a tired but smiling crew of volunteers took down tents, cleared away tables and festival supplies and signage with the satisfaction of knowing that, despite all the things that could have been done better, and will be done better next year, the many months of preparation and organization had led to eight days of events that were, for the most part, reported by participants as being enjoyable, entertaining, and worthwhile. The week started with the fourth First Saturday celebration of the year, as always masterminded by Carol Fergus and Emily Smith, this Saturday enhanced by the Dusty Downhill event organized by Jim Webster which attracted 110 runners and walkers. The race was followed by an afternoon of musical en-

tertainment, an Artwalk and artisan booths in the Platzl, and several other events including another Jim Webster initiated event, the Omazing Race, in which over 100 participants, many of them children, followed clues to identify items and locations around the down town core. The day finished with a concert by the Kelowna-based Celtic group, Cod Gone Wild, on the Centre 64 outdoor stage attended by an estimated 300 people, many of whom danced in the dirt around kids building sand castles, in a high-spirited party that lasted into the dusk. It all made for an optimistic start to the festival week to come. On Sunday the festival moved to Rotary Park where about 130 adults and children attended the Picnic in the Park between noon and 3 p.m. The entertainment featured traditional kids’ songs by Old Spice, followed by a short performance of magic tricks by The Amazing Jeremy, and the picnic ended with a series of old-tyme kids’ races that saw children of all sizes and ages jumping in sacks, running with eggs on spoons, and tied to their parents in three-legged races. Suckers and cotton candy, courtesy of The Candyman, were won by the participants. On Monday the entertainment turned its focus from chil-

dren to adults when Nelson actor and comedian Lucas Myers brought his ‘Cromoli Brothers’ comedy show to the Centre 64 theatre for an evening performance. Though small in numbers, the audience was warm in its appreciation of the many funny, occasionally risqué, sketches and jokes, several of them being persuaded to take part during the course of the show. There were many requests by departing happy patrons for another Lucas Myers show soon. Tuesday was workshop day with three of them, as well as an evening painting demonstration and wine & cheese reception. Angelika Werth, a fabric artist from Nelson, commenced a three-day workshop in deconstructing and reconstructing textiles, Cranbrook painter Jim Robertson conducted a very well attended full day ‘plein air’ painting workshop for beginners, and Helen Robertson conducted the first part of two 2-hour lantern-making workshops, the results of which decorated the entrance at the Saturday Night Blues Concert. That evening Calgary painter & instructor, Doug Swinton, gave a landscape painting demonstration to an enthusiastic audience of about 40 local painters at a wine and cheese reception in the dance studio at Centre 64.

Highlights from the August RDEK board meeting West Fernie Servicing & Restructure Petition Successful

Now that the West Fernie Servicing & Restructure Petition has been successful and is certified, the next major step before the project can move forward is support of the City of Fernie residents and Council for the restructure (boundary extension). The RDEK has requested the City of Fernie initiate the process to obtain that approval.

New Fire Service Contemplated for Elko

The RDEK is currently working on a proposed fire service for Elko. A public meeting will be held on Thursday, September 18th at 7:00pm at the Elko Community Hall. Property owners within the proposed fire protection service area will be provided with information on tax rates, mapping and how the fire service and fire department will operate. The RDEK has given first reading to the service establishment and loan authorization bylaws, which will begin the process. Voting for the service will take place during the election in November.

East Kootenay Energy Diet—Year 2

Homeowners in the Regional District of East Kootenay will once again be able to take advantage of a program aimed at helping them identify opportunities to increase energy savings in their homes and access subsidies to carry out the retrofits. The RDEK Board has approved up to $18,240 in funding for year 2 of the East Kootenay Energy Diet, to be granted on a first come-first serve basis to encourage homeowner participation and realize energy savings. Participating homeowners will be credited between $100 and $300 depending on what actions they take through the program. A detailed

breakdown of the available subsidies will be available through the EK Energy Diet website: www.eked.ca toward the end of August.

Elkhorn Ranch Covenant Applications

Two applications by Elkhorn Ranch Ltd. to release covenants related to the requirement for community water and community sewer services for future development were considered by the Board. Both applications were granted by the Board. A new covenant will be registered on lands proposed for development adjacent to Kootenay Road #3 to allow for monitoring of the cumulative impact of the proposed new individual wells.

Baynes Lake Area OCP Amendement and Rezoning Application

Bylaws 2523 and 2524 are proposed to accommodate a two lot subdivision in Baynes Lake. Following acceptance of the public hearing report the Board gave third reading to the Bylaws. Adoption of the Bylaws will be considered by the Board following the registration of a Development Agreement which has been offered by the applicant to address concerns raised during the bylaw process.

Letter of Intent for Easement Agreement

The RDEK will provide a letter of intent to the City of Cranbrook supporting entering into an easement agreement for the establishment of a trail connector along the northern boundary of the Cranbrook Transfer Station property, subject to a number of conditions including addressing concerns regarding safety and access, implementing national guidelines for cycle / walk crossings being implemented, and the City being responsible for all costs associated with trail establishment and maintenance.

BOOKNOTES

Book Club of the Heavyweights MIKE SELBY

O

n August 5, 1850, a freak lightning storm struck Monument Mountain (Great Barrington, Mass.), forcing a group of hikers into a cave for safety. The small group was a book club, and they had set out on their hike for literary reasons. A century before, a Mohican woman had thrown herself off of the summit, after being forbidden to marry the man she loved (unfortunately for her he was her cousin). When her body was found, members of her tribe covered her in rocks, simultaneously creating a monument to the tragedy and a name of the mountain. Poet William Cullen Bryant had immortalized the story in his poem ‘Monument Mountain,’ writing “There is a tale about these reverend rocks / A sad tradition of unhappy love / And sorrows borne and ended, long ago.” Inspired by Bryant’s poem, the book club members had come to retrace the woman’s steps up the mountain. The plan was to reach the summit, and toast the Mohican woman with the champagne they had brought. Forced into the cave by the storm, the book club members got to know each other a bit better, as they had never met until that morning. Instead of attending regular meetings, this group discussed books through the mail. Another odd characteristic of was that each member rarely dis-

PAGE 5

cussed books each of them had read. They only discussed books they had written. Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Oliver Wendell Holmes had begun corresponding with each other at the suggestion of David Dudley, a lawyer known to all three. Dudley had invited all three to meet each other on the August 5 hike. Holmes was a Boston physician, poet, novelist, and medical reformer. The first physician to use a stethoscope in the U.S., he is best remembered for his books ‘The Autocrat at the Breakfast Table,’ and ‘Elsie Venner’ — the first of what would later become known as the medical thriller genre. Hawthorne was a highly successful short story writer and novelist, most famous for ‘The House of the Seven Gables,’ and ‘The Scarlet Letter.’ Melville was the odd man out. He was decades younger than these two great men of American letters, and had not yet found writing success. His first novel, ‘Typee,’ was one of those much talked about but seldom read books, and he was having difficulty getting any other work published. What Holmes said in the cave remains unknown, but the usually reserved Melville unburdened all that was in heart to Hawthorne. Hawthorne in turn offered the young man encouragement, and to not give up.

TERRACE, B.C. — Mines Minister Bill Bennet hopes a new offer will end a First Nations blockade of a northwestern B.C. mine owned by the same company involved in a tailings pond breach in the Cariboo. Bennet met with protesters from the Tahltan First Nation Wednesday to discuss the week-old blockade at Imperial Metals’ nearly-completed Red Chris Mine, 80 kilometres south of Dease Lake. The minister be-

lieves many of the protesters, known as the Klabona Keepers, are satisfied with a proposal that would give the First Nation complete control of an independent engineering review of the tailings pond under construction at the huge copper and gold mine. The minister says Imperial Metals will pay for the review, but the Tahltan would have complete control over the firm selected for the probe, and the province would ensure the tailings pond isn’t used until it’s complete.

The Klabona Keepers set up the blockade at the Red Chris Mine in response to last Monday’s collapse of the tailings pond at Imperial Metals’ Mount Polley operation near Likely, B.C., that spilled millions of litres of water and mining sludge. The Tahltan Central Council has said it does not endorse the blockade but is listening to the group’s concerns, and council president Chad Day notes the Mount Polley spill raises “new questions and concerns’’ that Imperial Metals must address.

Nathaniel Hawthorne

Herman Melville

After this momentous hike (which they did complete after the storm abated), Melville moved his wife and children across the state into a house next door to Hawthorne’s. Hawthorne’s words of inspiration in the mountain cave had meant everything to Melville, who was finally able to begin and finish his own monument —‘Moby Dick.’ The first page of ‘Moby Dick’ even opens with: “To Nathaniel Hawthorne: In token of my admiration for his genius.” And if only the story ended there. Although neighbours, the two men continued to write constantly to each other. These letters have been pure gold to literary biographers, critics, students and fans of each or both writers. What was always noticed but never quite admitted to until recently is that Melville’s letters appear gay. Passages such as “Whence come you, Hawthorne? By what right do you drink from my flagon of life? And when I put it to my lips

— lo, they are yours and not mine,” and “[Hawthorne put] his strong New England roots in the hot soil of my Southern soul,” have fuelled much speculation over the years. Speculation is the key word here, as the letters are all that remains. There is no evidence of a relationship between the two men, and only Melville’s letters have the hint of homoeroticism to them. While Holmes and Hawthorne died as celebrated authors, Melville sadly did not. ‘Moby Dick’ was seen as a disaster when it first appeared, and the publisher had to destroy thousands of unsold copies. Melville died destitute, lonely, and forgotten. It wasn’t until the generation after his that the book was seen to be one of genius. One that wouldn’t have been written if he hadn’t poured his heart out to Hawthorne that day in the cave. Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

The power and pain of depression “Where does depression hurt? Everywhere. Who does depression hurt? Everyone.” We’ve all seen the ads on television. Those words are true. The truth of those words have hit home again with the suicide of Robin Williams. Others are starting to talk about their own struggles with depression, including Olympic athlete Clara Hughes, who has done much to raise funds for this disease. I have also been victimized by this disease. In late 2000, I was diagnosed with clinical depression. As a priest, I felt like I had to keep it private. I couldn’t let others know of my struggles. After all, my role was to be a helper, not to be someone who needed help. But I finally reached the point where I no longer had a choice. I couldn’t hold it together, and my world came crashing down. I was ready to say goodbye to it all. Literally. I had made a suicide plan, and was so very close to carrying it out. It was only by sheer grace that someone found me in time and called the police who took me to the Mental Health Ward of the hospital in Regina, where I was involuntarily committed. For 72 hours, I was watched. All I had was some loose fitting hospital pajamas and booties. I couldn’t go anywhere without permission, and I was not able to do anything without being watched. Part of the problem for me was the stigma that is still such a powerful force in our society. It’s ok to admit that you’ve got a

broken leg, and to get it looked after and to wear a cast. But it seems to be less ok to admit that your thoughts and your emotions are spiralling out of control. So you hide it. You try to deal with it all on your own—which is exactly the worst thing to do when you’re depressed. But when I could no longer avoid admitting that I Rev. Yme needed help, the first thing I Woensdregt experienced was a profound sense of relief. I wasn’t alone anymore. I didn’t have to worry about keeping up appearances. My dark secret was out. Guess what? The world didn’t end. In some real sense, a new world was born. People sat with me in the darkness of my depression, and told me that I was loved and that I had value as a human being. As time went on, I began to get the help I needed from some caring, compassionate and tough psychiatric nurses, as well as family and friends. It was clear that I needed help. Once I had admitted in that moment of desperation that I couldn’t do it by myself, the healing began. None of this was easy. It’s pretty scary to admit our need and to become vulnerable. But I also know that’s when my life began again. And to be completely honest, I still don’t have it all together. And that’s ok. In his novel, “The Emperor of Ocean Park”, Stephen Carter writes, “I am depressed. And I almost like it. Depression is seductive: it offends and teases, frightens you and draws you in, tempting you with its promise of sweet oblivion, then overwhelming you with a nearly sexual power,

squirming past your defenses, dissolving your will, invading the tired spirit so utterly that it becomes difficult to recall that you ever lived without it … or to imagine that you might live that way again. With all the guile of Satan himself, depression persuades you that its invasion was all your own idea, that you wanted it all along. It fogs the part of the brain that reasons, that knows right and wrong. It captures you with its warm, guilty, hateful pleasures, and, worst of all, it becomes familiar. All at once, you find yourself in thrall to the very thing that most terrifies you. Your work slides, your friendships slide, your marriage slides, but you scarcely notice: to be depressed is to be half in love with disaster.” It is a frighteningly accurate description of what I felt as I slid towards the abyss. I suspect many people who struggle with depression might recognize themselves in it as well. I often think that comics use laughter as a tool to beat the monsters of their world down to size. I heard an interview following Robin Williams’ suicide in which someone said, “Comedy is an alchemy ... it takes pain and turns it into laughter. In a world like this filled with so much horror, why wouldn’t you use all the tools at your disposal — love certainly, and hope and trust, but also laughter.” Rest in peace, Robin Williams. Thank you for the gift of laughter you gave to so many people. Now you are beyond the reach of the demons who bedeviled you. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Canadian Press also reported on an email exchange with Redford’s assistant in which the question of an embassy staffer being in the vehicle with the Premier was discussed. Redford did not want such a person in the vehicle with her. It was eventually decided that the embassy employee would be in the vehicle but would be requested not to speak to the Premier (!) Oh well, I guess I can do without my eyeballs. But let us not blame poor Michelle Tetreault. She was, and is, a public servant, and as such does what her boss (the Queen) told her to do. When the Queen says “go forth and scope out bathrooms in India”, the public servant does it. The astounding thing about this whole Redford thing is that she thought she could get away with it. You don’t get to be Premier of a Canadian province without having some smarts. So how can you be smart enough to be Premier and still think that no one will notice egregious misuse of taxpayer dollars? In this time of texting and emails such details are only a Freedom of Information request away. Yet Queen Redford, high in her lofty perch of power, thought such things her due, and no one would dare question her. That’s hubris folks. And the gods have smited her. China’s Chechnya: Terrorism in Xijiang It’s not really “China’s Chechnya” yet, but the insurgency in Xinjiang is growing fast. Incidents of anti-Chinese violence are getting bigger and much more frequent. Since March, 176 people have been killed in six separate attacks on Chinese police and government officials, local collaborators and ordinary Chinese residents of Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region in northwestern China, and the authorities don’t seem to have a clue what to do about it. The Uighur attackers have mostly used knives or explosives in their attacks (guns are hard to get in China), but nobody has suggested that they are so technologically backward that their bombs come with long, trailing fuses that have to be lit by hand. Yet Chinese police in Xinjiang last month seized tens of thousands of boxes of matches. The rebels, on the other hand, are very serious people. Like most independence movements of the colonial era, they believe that you have to take the war to the homeland of the “oppressor” if you can. One of those recent attacks was not in Xinkiang but in Kunming in southwestern China, where a band of eight knife-wielding Uighurs killed 29 ordinary Chinese citizens and wounded 143 in the main railway station. Another standard tactic in this sort of war is the use of violence to deter one’s own people from collaborating with the colonial power. On 30 July Jume Tahir, the imam of China’s largest mosque, in the city of Kashgar in Xinjiang, was stabbed to death just after leading early morning prayers. His crime? Praising Communist Party policies and blaming the rising tide of violence on

Uighur separatists and extremists. The Uighurs are overwhelmingly Sunni Muslims, and the official Chinese line blames the separatist violence on foreign Islamists who are stirring up the local people. The separatists themselves say that it is a legitimate response to Chinese oppression, and in particular to the Chinese government’s policy of flooding Xinjiang with Han Chinese immigrants in an attempt to change the territory’s demographic balance. The truth, as usual, is more complicated. Gwynne Xinjiang (literally “New Territory) was conquered Dyer by Chinese troops in the 1750s, but the population mix did not change. In the early 19th century a census reported the population as 30 percent Han Chinese (almost all living north of the Tian Shan mountains) and 60 percent Uighurs, Turkic-speaking Muslim farmers who accounted for almost the entire population south of the mountains. The rest were Kazakhs, Huis, Mongols and others. The Uighurs had grown to 75 percent of the total population by the 1953 census, with many by then living north of the mountains. The Han Chinese had fallen to only 6 percent. But now, thanks to largescale immigration, the Chinese are back up to fully 40 percent of Xinkiang’s population, while the 10 million Uighurs are down to 45 percent. In other words, the numbers will support almost any argument you want to make, if you choose your census dates carefully. But it is certainly not true that Han Chinese people are newcomers to Xinjiang, and it is probably not true that the Chinese government has a policy of en-

couraging Han immigration to reduce the Uighurs to a marginal minority. Chinese officials themselves say that they are trying to develop the Xinjiang economy and raise local living standards, with the (unstated) goal of making people so prosperous and content that they will not even think of “betraying the motherland” by seeking independence. It’s just that a developed economy requires job skills that are not plentiful among the Uighurs, so large numbers of Han Chinese are drawn in to do those jobs. Add in all the resentment about the brutal assaults on the Uighurs’ culture and religion that happened during the Cultural Revolution – and continue in a minor key even today, thanks mainly to ignorant government officials who have never before lived outside an exclusively Chinese cultural context. And now there is also a radical Islamist ideology available, for those who are thinking about rebellion. So now it’s getting really serious in Xinkiang: the last big incident, on 28 July, saw hundreds of Uighurs storm a police station and government offices armed with knives and axes. 59 of the attackers were killed and 215 arrested, while 37 (presumably Chinese) civilians were murdered. When you have organised groups doing violence on this scale, you are already in a low-level war. It will probably never be as bad as Chechnya, and it is very unlikely that Xinkiang will ever be independent, but it may be a long and ugly counter-insurgency war, with many deaths. At least they’ve got the matches under control. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

Roller derby is on the rise in the East Kootenays Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

Roller derby is on the rise around the world and proof of that can be found right here in the East Kootenays. According to Bryan Mcwilliam, manager for Canada’s national roller derby team, it’s a combination of factors that has helped propel derby to its current status. “The switch from a sideshow act, similar to professional wrestling, to a more [legitimate] sport has kept people coming back,” Mcwilliam wrote via email Thursday afternoon. “The sport allows people who may have lost their window in sports such as hockey, figure skating or anything else, to continue to play an amateur sport at a competitive level.”

According to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, the global governing body for women’s roller derby, the number of derby leagues across the world increased from one in 2001 to 1,100 as recently as 2012. The East Kootenay Roller Derby League (EKRDL), established in 2011, is one of those leagues and housed three teams in 2014. Invermere’s Killer Rollbots took home the 2014 EKRDL title, defeating Kimberley’s Bavarian Barbarians July 5 at Marysville Arena. The Elkford-based Wildcat Brawlers finished the season in third place. The Fernie-based Avalanche City Roller Girls left the EKRDL as league champions in 2013 and have kept the momentum rolling ever since.

RollerGirl.ca maintains extensive statistics and rankings for roller derby teams across the country. As of Aug. 14, Avalanche City was 12th in the country amongst 128 travelling derby teams ranked by RollerGirl.ca, proving that East Kootenay-based clubs are beginning to make a name for themselves in the national derby conversation. Kimberley’s Bavarian Barbarians find a place in the national RollerGirl.ca rankings, edging into the non-travelling ranks in 75th position out of 78 ranked teams. Pamela “Rock ‘N’ Rogue” Nevlud is in her first full season with the Barbarians and was drawn to the sport for the reasons Mcwilliam outlined — it allowed her to continue participating in sport at a

high-level of competition. “I went out to my first bout last year,” Nevlud said. “During the game, I was just like, ‘Wow, I need to play this sport.’ And I joined the next week. “It’s a really different sport. It’s a sport that has a lot of attitude and people like that.” The Real Mckenzies photograph/mckenzieinc.wix.com If you have yet to experience roller Kimberley’s Bavarian Barbarians (above) engage in their final bout of 2014 derby, you have one when the Jaw Breakers roll into Marysville Arena Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. last chance to do so beer gardens, that’s kind season. East Kootenay sharp shooters Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The 2014 Canadian National Archery Championships were held in Lac La Biche, Alta. Aug. 1 to 10 and three sharp-shooters from the East Kootenays returned home in decorated fashion. “The success rate was amazing,” said Cranbrook Archery Club coach Elaine Johnson. “We try not to push the kids to go in and make a podium spot. “There can only be three people that hit the podium out of a lot [of competitors]. We push the kids really hard at doing their very best and [to focus on] sportsmanship.” Cranbrook’s Brittany Johnson heads the champion shooters, having earned a gold medal and two silver medals in women’s junior compound bow competition. Brittany set a Canadian record in her first elimination round of Canadian Open shooting, which is a combination of junior- and senior-aged competitors. Archers compete in the

720 and 1440 competitions, combining scores from each event for a total score. 720 competition has an archer fire 72 arrows all from a distance of 50 metres, while the 1440 competition requires archers shoot 36 arrows from four different distances. Britta-

ny’s Canadian Open score of 145 eclipsed the previous record score of 142. She would later be defeated in the Canadian Open final match-up. Adam Pitney, also of Cranbrook, earned two gold medals in men’s junior compound bow competition. Pitney’s

field win was earned in a headto-head, one arrow shoot off as he and another competitor were tied following regular competition. Pitney found success in the field and FITA events. Jaffray’s Kevin Evans rounded out the group of winners, bringing home a gold medal in men’s senior para-open compound bow FITA competition. Luc Volard, Keelan Boyle and coach Johnson — all of Cranbrook — and Kimberley’s Jessica Krewenchuk, also competed at the championships. Coach Johnson said competitors shot several times a week for several hours at a time in order to prepare for the Canadian National Archery Championships. Additionally, some engage in aerobic and weight training programs to further prepare for competition.

Mariners surge into playoff contention Tim Booth Associated Press

SEATTLE — This is how good Felix Hernandez has pitched in making himself the clear leader for a second Cy Young award. The ace of the Seattle Mariners has set the pace for a pitching staff that’s on a record pace not seen from an American League team in 40 years and is the reason that Seattle is playing meaningful baseball in

August for the first time in seven years. Seattle is in the mix for the second wild card in the American League after winning eight of nine and it’s because of a pitching staff that has a combined 2.95 ERA. They are led by Hernandez, who is on an overpowering run with 16 straight starts of at least seven innings pitched and two or fewer runs allowed.

Selig’s successor determined Ronald Blum Associated Press

BALTIMORE — Rob Manfred has been elected baseball’s 10th commissioner and will succeed Bud Selig in January. A labour lawyer who has worked for Major League Baseball since 1998, Manfred beat out Boston Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner on Thursday in the first contested vote for a new commissioner in 46 years.

The 55-year-old, who grew up in Rome, New York, must address issues that include decreased youth interest and the longer games. He has served as MLB’s chief operating officer for the past year. Selig turned 80 last month and has ruled baseball since September 1992, when he was among the owners who forced Commissioner Fay Vincent’s resignation. He said he intends to retire in January.

Arizona State’s Sarafin surprised by attention after coming out as gay John Marshall Associated Press

CAMP TONTOZONA, Ariz. — Chip Sarafin watched the others before him break down the barriers, athletes like Jason Collins and Michael Sam who let the world know they were gay. The Arizona State offensive lineman had already told his teammates and coaches long before, without causing so much as a ripple. But when Sarafin finally took his turn to pass through the door, he was a little surprised to find what was on the other side. “I was a little nervous when it came to my attention what a big influence this was having,’’ Sarafin said Thursday. “I did not intend for it to get to the magnitude that it did.’’ Sarafin became the first active openly-gay Division I football player when he talked to Compete, a Tempe-based magazine for gay sports, about his sexual orientation for a story in its August issue. The fifth-year senior follows in the footsteps of Sam, the St. Louis Rams linebacker who came out after his playing days at Missouri were over. Sam became the first openly-gay player to be drafted in the NFL and is competing for a roster spot with the Rams. Collins set the original precedent, becoming the first openly-gay athlete in the four major U.S. sports when he came out to Sports Illustrated in April 2013. He broke another barrier when he played for the Brooklyn Nets late last season. Numerous other athletes have come out since then, including Massachusetts sophomore Derrick Gordon, the first active openly-gay player in Division I basketball. With so many precedent-setters before him, Sarafin figured his announcement would be treated with little more than a shrug. It wasn’t quite the same fervour as Sam’s announcement, but it still was big news, drawing more than a dozen

reporters and cameramen to the Sun Devils’ fall camp retreat at Camp Tontozona. “I’m hoping that stuff like this won’t be such a big news story, that people will hear stories like this and it won’t be such a big thing,’’ Sarafin said. “Eventually, players will be who they are and it’s just that, but right now there still needs to be role models for those types of players.’’ It certainly wasn’t a big thing for Sarafin’s teammates and coaches. Sarafin said he began telling teammates in an informal fashion individually and answered questions when people had them, never addressing the team as a group. He told his coaches over a year ago and has had universal support from everyone associated with the football program and the athletics department. When Sarafin’s sexual orientation became public, it barely registered at Arizona State, other than the increased media coverage. “I’m really proud of our guys. It’s not something that’s a surprise to us,’’ Arizona State coach Todd Graham said. “Obviously, our guys were aware of that and we’re proud of Chip just like we’re proud of the rest of our guys. Really proud of him and the courage he has. Our guys are behind him 100 per cent.’’ Reaction to Sarafin’s announcement outside of Arizona State was mostly positive, with Sam and Collins both offering encouraging comments on Twitter. Sarafin hasn’t seen the posts since players are not allowed to get on the Internet or use cellphones at Camp Tontozona, though he appreciated the support. But attention wasn’t what Sarafin was looking for — at least not the living-in-the-spotlight kind. Though he hasn’t played a down for Arizona State, he’s given the Sun Devils some needed depth on the offensive line and worked on the scout team. Sarafin has been exceptionally productive off the field, graduating

and has worked with numerous groups to end discrimination and bullying in youth sports. If the attention that comes with coming out sheds more light on those things, Sarafin is all for it, even if he did feel a little uncomfortable talking in front of so many people. “It (coming out) was something I initially in-

with a degree in biomedical engineering last spring before enrolling in Arizona State’s master’s program. He has been active in the community, particularly in youth sports, and is a member of ASU’s prestigious Tillman Scholars program. Sarafin has helped with research on football-related concussions

tended to do, but I didn’t intend for it to blow out of proportion like it did,” he said. “I originally did it to get some of the stuff I was working on out into the world, bring attention to some of the issues I thought were important. Obviously, it got to the magnitude that it did and I support this.”

Prefontaine to retire an Argonaut C anadian Press

Prefontaine made club history as the only Argonaut to ever be named a CFL all-star punter on six occasions. He was also named an East Division all-star 11 times (eight at punter, three at placekicker). He holds the Argonaut records for total punts (1,464), all-time punting yards (67,061), and most punting yards in a single game (744). He also holds club records for most all-time kickoffs in a career (688).

TORONTO — Noel Prefontaine came into the CFL as a Toronto Argonaut, and he will leave as one too. The veteran kicker/ punter will retire after signing a one-day contract at Sunday’s game between Toronto and the B.C. Lions at Rogers Centre. Prefontaine spent most of his 16-season CFL career in Toronto, winning Grey Cup championships with the team in 2004 and 2012.

More than two-thirds of rapid melt of world’s glaciers caused by humans, study says Seth Borenstein ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON — More than two-thirds of the recent rapid melting of the world’s glaciers can be blamed on humans, a new study finds. Scientists looking at glacier melt since 1851 didn’t see a human fingerprint until about the middle of the 20th century. Even then only one-quarter of the warming wasn’t from natural causes. But since 1991, about 69 per cent of the rapidly increasing melt was man-made, said Ben Marzeion, a climate scientist at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. “Glaciers are really shrinking rapidly now,” he said. “I think it’s fair to say most of it is manmade.” Scientists fault global warming from the burning of coal, oil and gas as well as changes in land use near glaciers and soot pollution. Glaciers in Alaska and the Alps in general have more human-caused melting than the global average, Marzeion said. The study is published Thursday in the journal Science. The research is the first to calculate just how much of the glacial melting can be attributed to people and “the jump from about a quarter to roughly 70 per cent of total glacier mass loss is significant and concerning,” said University of Alaska Fairbanks geophysicist Regine Hock, who wasn’t part of the study. Over the last two decades, about 295 billion tons (269 billion metric tons) of ice is melting each year on average due to human causes and about 130 billion tons (121 million metric tons) a year are melting because of natural causes, Marzeion calculated. Glaciers alone add to about four-tenths of an inch of sea level rise every decade, along with even bigger increases from melting ice sheets — which are different than glaciers — and the expansion of water with warmer temperatures. Marzeion and colleagues ran multiple computer simulations to see how much melting there would be from

The difference is what was caused by humans. Scientists aren’t quite certain what natural causes started glaciers shrinking after the end of the Little Ice Age in the middle of the 19th century, but do know what are human-causes: climate change, soot, and local changes in land use. There is a sizable margin of error so the 69 per cent human caused can be as low as 45 per cent or as high as 93 per cent, but likely in the middle. “This study makes perfect sense,” said Pennsylvania State University glacier expert

Richard Alley, who wasn’t part of the research. “The authors have quantified what I believe most scientists would have expected.” Not all of the human-caused melting is from global warming from the burning of fossil fuels, but climate change is the biggest factor, said Ted Scambos, a scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center. The study showed that it took time for global warming and other factors to build up and cause melting. That lag effect means the world is already locked into more rapid melting from the warming that has already occurred, Marzeion and Alley said.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Authorities rescued three men making a pilgrimage to an abandoned bus in the Alaska wilderness made famous by the book and film “Into the Wild.” Three hikers, two from Wisconsin and third with no known address, needed help last week after one of them tripped and hurt himself with an axe, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported. They ran into trouble Aug. 6 on the Stampede Trail just north of the entrance to Denali National Park and Preserve, about 180 miles north of Anchorage. The Tri-Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded and gave the

three hikers a ride on all-terrain vehicles, the Alaska State Troopers announced Wednesday on their website. Matthew Peot, 29, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Thomas Young, 45, of Horicon, Wisconsin; and Kenneth Young, whose age and hometown wasn’t listed, were trying to get to the dilapidated bus, but the Teklanika River was too high, troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email to The Associated Press. They camped for a few days, waiting to see if the river would get low enough to cross, but the axe injury ended the quest, Peters wrote. Thomas Young suffered minor injuries in the accident.

Authorities often are called to help people heading to the dilapidated bus made famous by the book and movie “Into the Wild,” which chronicle the life and death of Chris McCandless. He hiked into the Alaska wilderness in April 1992 with little food and equipment and spent the summer living in the bus. McCandless was found dead in the bus almost four months later after starving to death. Four years ago, a Swiss woman drowned in the river on the trail to the bus, but it was unclear whether she was hiking to the vehicle or just hiking in the area.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Use the morning for handling any important matters. By the afternoon, you might want to take off for a fun summer weekend or at least a get-together. Be careful, as you could enjoy yourself at the cost of making a loved one or admirer jealous. Tonight: Party on! TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might decide to head in a direction that is different from a dear friend. This person could be difficult right now, and you might wonder what to do. Just give him or her some space. You will tend to go overboard in your conversations. Tonight: Find your friends. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You might want to move past a problem, and you will -- especially if this matter is handled in the morning. Later on, you could feel as if someone is pushing you too hard. Make it OK for you to play the role of the recluse. Tonight: Not to be found.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You might feel as if you have no other choice but to complete what someone else seems to have left unfinished. Once you have done what is necessary, give up being so responsible and get into the weekend spirit. Tonight: Where the crowds are. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) If you can take off from your routine, do. You might opt to go on a drive to your favorite getaway. Communication seems to flourish, and you’ll need to explain where you are coming from financially to a roommate or loved one. Tonight: A force to be dealt with. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You understand much more than you let on. Your detached demeanor could emerge, and you could choose to discuss your perspective. Someone will let you know how much he or she appreciates your feedback. You might want to respond appropriately. Tonight: Opt for an escape. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Others might not be aware that

Tundra

they are testing your limits. Be willing to listen. You will discuss the issue, but if someone pushes you too far, you are likely to explode. Try to hold back, because words said are impossible to take back. Tonight: Respond to a loved one. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Get as much done as possible in the morning. Later in the day, others are likely to seek you out. Take a look at your longterm goals and decide what to do. A meeting could be more important than you realize. You might find solutions. Tonight: Let someone else dominate. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might want to reach out to someone, but you must handle certain tasks first. You could feel concerned about an authority figure. Start a conversation and see what is on this person’s mind. You could find it difficult to relax. Tonight: TGIF! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You might be slow to get started. Once you get going, others will pick up on your energy. As friends seek you out and invite

you to various happenings, you will consider how you can get everything done that is needed. Tonight: Unleash your playfulness. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Get on the phone quickly and return calls. Move up meetings to the morning if possible. You will want some thinking time before you leave for the weekend. Remember that you are coming to the end of the summer season. Use the coming weekend well. Tonight: Just relax. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Reach out to a friend, but refuse to get hung up on various details. An offer could be made that feels too good to say “no” to. Don’t push a relative or neighbor too far, as this person could be a little more ornery than you might realize. Tonight: Hang with friends at a favorite spot. BORN TODAY Actress Jennifer Lawrence (1990), military commander Napoleon Bonaparte (1769), chef Julia Child (1912)

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I’m 50 years old and have two adult children. Their mother and I divorced 15 years ago. Throughout our marriage, my wife had many affairs. She’s married twice since we split up. Five years ago, my son married a woman who has become close to my ex. My daughter-in-law has labeled me a mental case to many family members, friends and acquaintances. I can count on one hand the number of times I have seen my son in the past five years, and each time, he was extremely disrespectful and said horrible things to me. They now have a 2-year-old son, whom I have seen only briefly on three occasions even though they live nearby. I believe my ex-wife has had a great influence in turning my son into a cold, ruthless person. I’m financially well off and recently updated my will to leave my son only $20 because of all the pain and anguish he has caused me. I prefer to distance myself from him, but I would like to have a relationship with my grandson. Is there any way to do this? -Proud Grandpa Dear Grandpa: Not without also having some type of relationship with your son. After all, he isn’t preventing you from seeing the boy. Some states are sympathetic to grandparents’ rights, but your son might be able to convince the judge that his distancing is in his son’s best interest, and you could be cut out entirely. It’s risky, and we don’t recommend it for you. We have no doubt that your ex-wife has influenced her son and his wife. But if you want a relationship with your grandson, you need to tolerate his parents and be civil to them. Perhaps in time they will see how much their child loves you and will warm up. We hope so. Dear Annie: I married my wife in 1957. We were compatible in every way and very much in love. We have four children, eight grandkids and 11 great-grandkids. Since the day I met her, whenever I held her or kissed her, she was always my 16-year-old sweetheart. She is still the gal I fell in love with. About five years ago, my wife lost interest in lovemaking and will not talk about why. I’m sure she isn’t cheating. She is 73, and I am 79. After 55 years together, I have finally noticed that she has aged. She just laughs when I say that I wish she would still act like my 16-yearold gal when I hold her and kiss her. I truly miss her touch and sweet words. She tells me she loves me, but it doesn’t feel like it. The thing I want to get across is to always treat your partner like you did the first day you met him or her. It’s the best way of getting to your 57th anniversary. I promised to love her until the day I die, and I will keep that promise until we are head-to-head in our mausoleum 5th-floor penthouse. -- The Old Fool Dear Fool: We sympathize, but we are also astounded at how many men truly do not understand what happens to a woman’s libido at menopause and beyond. Your wife’s lack of interest in lovemaking has nothing to do with how much she cares for you. She would probably love being your 16-year-old sweetheart, but her current hormonal state doesn’t permit it. It’s a physical change. There are treatments, but they don’t work for everyone. Talk to your wife. Say that her physical touch -- not sex -- would mean the world to you, and ask whether she would be a bit more affectionate. Dear Annie: Thank you for printing the letter from “Disgusted in New York,” whose 85-year-old aunt wasn’t bathed in the hospital. I have been a nurse for many years. We never give baths in bathtubs to patients. We “bathe” them in bed -- what my mother would have called a sponge bath. Also, it is possible to shower people who can handle a shower chair. However, this lady seemed to have an odor, thus none of the proper things was done for her well-being and comfort. -A.S.
