Suspicious vehicle fire puts forest in danger A suspicious vehicle fire on a local logging road threatened to ignited a forest fire on Thursday. Campbell River Fire Rescue responded to the report of a vehicle fire off the Duncan Bay Main Logging Road at 2:39 p.m. in the same area as a brush fire two months ago. On arrival, crews discovered an abandoned pick-up truck that was completely destroyed by fire. The fire had extended to the grass adjacent to the truck. Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Doherty says, “Campbell River Fire Rescue worked with the Wildfire Management Branch to contain and extinguish the fire which appears to be suspicious, and is under investigation.” Doherty also adds that crews were fortunate winds were light and that the area had an old access road which served as a natural fire guard, preventing the fire from spreading into the standing timber. Mountain bike park one jump closer to development Mike Davies Campbell RiveR miRRoR

The goal of developing a mountain bike training facility and skills park in Campbell River has cleared another hurdle, or gap, or rail, or

(insert your favourite mountain biking reference). At the Aug. 12 meeting of Campbell River City Council, a site was officially proposed and approved for the development of the facility. The site chosen, after extensive con-

sultation with various community groups, is a 3.2-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Beaver Lodge Forest Lands at 1100 Dogwood St. South, between Dogwood Street and the houses on the west side of Springbok Road.

“Three years ago this summer, my eldest son was diagnosed with dyslexia,” said Wendy Ravai, the driving force behind the project. Shortly after her son’s diagnosis, she said they took a family vacation, and he fell in love with mountain biking at a

training park and told her, “We need one of these in Campbell River.” “I told him, ‘if you don’t give up on trying to read, I won’t give up on getting a bike park.’” And she hasn’t. Continued on Pg. 2

Continued from Pg. 1

The yellow cross-hatched triangle indicates the lot proposed as a location for a mountain bike park.

After being stuck in discussions with the Beaver Lodge Forest Lands for some time, with the project bogged down in indecision and uncertainty, Ravai and Beth Pechter went to the city to see if there were options. The city commissioned a designer/builder, Coast Gravity, to come in and look at various prospective sites for the park, and finally settled on the Dogwood Street location. Development of the area will begin as soon

as the land can be successfully rezoned from R-1 (residential) to PA-1 (Public Areas) to accommodate the park, as it will be considered a “recreational complex” in the zoning bylaw. This process must include a public hearing on the rezoning proposal, which will be scheduled and publicized at a future date. Once the property has been developed, the River City Cycle Club, which proposed and developed the concept of the park, will form a society, who will then

enter into an agreement with the city to be responsible for the construction, maintenance, and operation of the facility, as well as obtain liability insurance for the park’s operation. “It’s good for the community, it’s good for tourism, and it’s good for attracting future residents,” said Catherine Temple of Go Campbell River. “There is absolutely huge money in it, and we’ve got some of the best riding in the province. What we don’t have is the infrastructure to market to people,” she said. According to Temple, this training park is the first step to remedying that situation. Campbell River city councilor Ron Kerr, who backed the park’s creation when it came before council added that the park is another well-

needed family-friendly activity for people who live here, and agrees that it will both bring in tourists and be yet another selling point to encourage people to move here. “To me, it just seems like a win in all directions,” he said. Ravai said the ultimate goal is to bring people together, which is what the whole process of getting the facility built is doing. “This is a huge opportunity for so many groups, organizations, and individuals to come together. It’s really the epitome of ‘community,’ when you look at it. It’s going to be a community park, built by the community, for that community.” The rezoning application is expected to move forward in September. Watch the Mirror for future updates.

Meeker Charity Golf Classic in 26th year of helping Special Olympians Mike Davies Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Still going strong in its 26th year, the Howie Meeker Charity Golf Classic once again filled the fund for Special Olympians in the Campbell River area to enable them to keep doing what they love. The event this year was held Aug. 16 this year at Storey Creek Golf Course. “They wanted me to get them a Vancouver Canuck,” said Meeker,

After a few years of doing it [myself], they just said, ‘why don’t you just do it and we’ll put your name on it?’ and I said, ‘sure,’ because it was fun, and it was important.” According to Lori Holmgren, program coordinator for the Campbell River and District Association for Community Living, about 115 athletes from the ages of 12 to 69 benefit from the funds raised at the annual event, which brings in between $25,000 and $30,000 annually. Dean Thulin, who is in his 10th year with the organization, said it’s all about the athletes. “Nothing goes to administration or overhead. Everything raised here goes to the athletes,” to cover the cost of equipment, travel, entry fees and other associated financial considerations. “The athletes don’t pay a

Swimmers plunge into rescuing Cortes Island lakes Mike Davies CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

When the normally pristine lakes of Cortes Island suddenly started changing colour and giving off a potent, unpleasant stench earlier this year, some of the Island’s residents were understandably concerned. Local “citizen scientists” put some of the lake water under their microscopes, according to Leah Seltzer, executive director of the Friends of Cortes Island Society (FCIS), and found that the region’s lakes were

undergoing an algae bloom. Typically, Seltzer said, these blooms are caused by an excess of nitrates and phosphates, substances that are generally produced by agricultural fertilizers and human waste, so the first thing that needs to be done is to analyze the lakes themselves so that they can confirm the causes of the issue before any definitive action can be taken. If it’s a man-made problem, for example, such as septic systems leaking, steps can be

taken to mitigate that. “We can’t take for granted that these lakes are just always going to be there,” she said. “Even in a place like Cortes Island, people need to be aware of their impact on the ecosystem.” After speaking with local residents – some who have been living in the area of these lakes for more than 40 years and have never seen blooms like this before – Seltzer and the FCIS decided that this was likely not a cyclical situation that would sort itself out over time. There needed to

be official testing done under Environment Canada protocols, but they ran into funding issues when they realized the expense of sending samples to Environment Canada, and the cost of the tests themselves. The FCIS applied for and received a grant from the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, which will cover the initial cost of the upcoming test of the lake water’s present state and create a “lake profile,” but Seltzer said that they need to raise another approximately $12,000 for con-

tinued monitoring and analysis, as well as to put some funds away for restoration costs once the causes and their ecological impacts are assessed. “To do any kind of meaningful testing of these lakes, it needs to happen for an extended period,” she said, because not only do they need to find out about seasonal changes, but also monitor whether any actions taken are having any effect. That’s where Carrie Saxifrage, Andrew Smyth, Mark Braaten and Bianka Sawicz come

in. They are the four swimmers who will be attempting to swim all nine freshwater lakes on Cortes in one day in a challenge aptly named the Nine Lake Swim. Beginning at 5 a.m. on Aug. 24, the swimmers will swim, boat, and hike their way around Cortes Island (with a few short car rides), completing a route that totals approximately 10 km of swimming over 14 hours to raise money for the research and restoration of these ecologically sensitive lakes and streams. According to Seltzer,

if blooms like this year’s happen with any frequency, eventually the lakes will become deoxygenated and won’t be able to support the life that depends on freshwater in the area, so it’s important to be proactive and find the cause or causes of this issue. A response after the lakes are dead doesn’t do any good. If you’d like to help, go to the Nine Lake Swim link on the right side of ourcortes.com, search canadahelps.org for the donation page, or contact the FCIS at friendsofcortes@gmail.com.

Council taking recent health report seriously

www.CampbellRivermirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

Mike Davies Campbell RiveR miRRoR

North Island Medical Health Officer Dr. Charmaine Enns recently presented a report to Campbell River city council that provided an enlightening but disturbing picture of the region’s overall health. The report found that Campbell River’s average life expectancy is two years shorter than the Vancouver Island average, its rate of death due to drugs and suicide is second highest on the Island, and it consumes 13 litres of alcohol per month per person—the third highest rate on the Island. Possibly most disturbing is the 23 children per 1,000 that need protection in Campbell River compared to the average of 12 per 1,000 in the rest of B.C. It also found correlation between average income and rate of single-parent households affecting the overall health of the community, due to the added health stresses caused by those financial struggles. “It was a little surprising, but not overly,” said city councillor Andy Adams of the report, adding that when looking at acute care situations, RCMP reports, addic tions s er vices intakes, as well as the

increasing demands on various community services for at-risk populations, “it’s no secret that it’s a situation in need of addressing.” Knowing there is a problem is different from seeing the scope of it, however. “It’s good when you see those numbers,” he said, “because then it’s real.” Adams said he immediately set to researching the matter more fully in an attempt to begin setting a framework for how to effectively mitigate the factors that lead to these issues. “You don’t fix a problem by throwing money at it. That’s been shown many times in the past,” he said. “You need a more strategic plan that is results-oriented, and has thoroughly been examined from all angles.” Examining the issue from all angles, according to Adams, means “getting everyone to the table,” and getting input from everyone with experience and knowledge on the subjects at hand, “from VIHA to local government, to RCMP to various health providers and educators.” “We need to create a ‘Community Health Network’ of systems,” he said, where various groups and agencies all support the goal of addressing the source problems, rather than the resulting soci-

etal health issues. Essentially, he said, by the time people end up in the hospital, it’s too late to do anything about what caused them to end up there. “Acute care isn’t going to solve the problem. It addresses the immediate need, but not the underlying problem that got them to that point.” Adams, who recently announced his candidacy for Mayor of Campbell River in the upcoming municipal election, said he and others spoke with B.C. Minister of Health Terry Lake about these issues when he was in town for the groundbreaking of the new hospital on Aug. 7, and received a very positive response in terms of the government’s willingness to help with the project. “We’re not reinventing the wheel, we’re taking the good work that’s being done in other places, using the good work being done here, and utilizing the skills and systems that already work to create a community-based initiative that can address these issues.” He acknowledged that because these issues weren’t in the current council’s strategic plan, there’s not going to be anything to actu-

ally implement anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean they can’t start the process and do the legwork for the next council to take advantage of. One of the first things the next council will need to do when they take office this fall is to create their own strategic plan, he said, and he’s hopeful that the work being put in now to research and plan for possible initiatives to address these community health issues will be incorporated into that plan. “We want to gather as much information as we can and set some kind of framework on the wall so the next council doesn’t have to start from scratch.” The first step, according to Adams, is to get organizations with resources talking about the issues that need tackling, and then find ways for them to work together to tackle them. Campbell River city council has an initial meeting planned for Aug. 26 with various organizations to do just that and explore the Community Health Network possibility further to get the ball rolling and take action on these issues. Watch for f uture updates in the Mirror.

More help coming for addictions services training in British Columbia MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

In November 2013, the provincial government created a mental-health action plan to “reduce barriers and service gaps, and support evidence-based solutions for patients with severe substance use addictions and mental illness.” On Wednesday, Aug. 6, Health Minister Terry Lake announced an additional $3-million of funding specifically for substance abuse education and training to add to the $20-million allotted originally to regional addictions programs and supports. The new $3-million partnership is between the provincial government and the education, care and research program of Dr. Evan Wood (co-director of the Urban Health Research Initiative as the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS at St. Paul’s Hospital and medical director of Addictions Services for Vancouver Coastal Health and Providence Health Care). This funding will go toward a new B.C. addiction medicine diploma program at the Univer-

sity of British Columbia which will be linked to regional health authorities, as well as a first-ofits-kind Canadian network which integrates me dic a l e duc at ion, scientific research and clinical care to reduce the health and social harms of untreated addiction. “There is an abundance of new knowledge available in the area of substance use disorder treatment,” said Lake in the announcement. “With the expertise and leadership of Dr. Wood and his colleagues in expanding the number of skilled addiction medicine providers and developing new ways of helping patients, I am confident that B.C. will remain a leader in addiction treatment education, research and clinical supports.” Suzanne Anton, B.C. Attorney General and Minister of Justice, praised the announcement. “Having seen firsthand the impact of addictions in our communities, I understand that it is important to reach out to those in need of care and provide even greater support,” she said.

Dr. Wood said that the funding will, “promote optimal patient care in B.C. by supporting professional education in addiction medicine and creating opportunities for inter-disciplinary collaboration amongst doctors and other health professionals to best serve patients facing addictions,” and, “enable B.C. to emerge as an international leader in addiction treatment and recovery.” So what does this mean for the Mid and North Island region? According to the Ministry, the training program will integrate existing medicine training programs for physicians and expand it to other health professional training. This means that nurses, psychologists and social workers will now have access to addictions services training to which they didn’t previously have access. Basically, more health workers will be able to

receive addictions training. The Rapid Access Addiction Medicine Program is another aspect of the funding allocation that will have a direct benefit to those outside the Lower Mainland, as patients, physicians and families of those with addictions issues will be able to consult much more immediately with addictions specialists at St Paul’s, one of the premier addictions centres in North America. This will reduce wait times for consultations, treatments, and reduce the need for travel, by enabling more healthcare providers, both front-line and support-based, to have more timely access to experts and resources. The hope is that by having more people in the social system trained in recognition and treatment options, people with mild-to-moderate substance use issues can find treatment before they develop more complex problems, and being

Our View

Good reason to be cautious about impact on Beaver Lodge Lands A proposal to develop a mountain bike park in Campbell River is positive and worthwhile project for the community to pursue. Anything that encourages healthy activity involving young people (and old, as well) is win-win for everybody. We say: Being Wendy Ravi and Beth Pechter are careful about to be commended for taking action damage to forest on something they believe will be worthwhile for young and old alike. is warranted Because their concept is an overwhelmingly positive cause, it’s hard to hold up a caution sign on one aspect of it. However necessary, hesitation should not be seen as taking a

position against the idea. It just means we need to be careful of its impact on something else that is precious and dear to the community. In this case, we’re talking about the Beaver Lodge Lands (BLL). The proponents appeared before city council last week and indicated that they had received a less than enthusiastic response from the Beaver Lodge Lands Committee. But don’t condemn the committee as a negative force in the community because of its reserved response. They are charged with managing the provincial forest and has had its issues with mountain biking in the area. Unauthorized construction of damaging trails and jumps is an ongoing issue that impacts the forest and

therefore the committee’s caution is warranted. Using the BLL for a mountain biking facility could be seen as working against the committee’s mandate of doing what’s best for the forest lands. Now, nobody is saying the facility would damage the forest but biking to and from it has an impact and once leaving the facility, cyclists would undoubtedly use the forest trails. The same thing will happen with the currently-proposed lot immediately adjacent to the BLL. The Beaver Lodge Lands is a multi-use asset in our community that is heavily used by cyclists – responsibly by most. But bicycles have an impact and encouraging more use undoubtedly makes BLL supporters nervous.

Fracking impact on water Re: Fracking has never contaminated drinking water To produce gas from shale by hydraulic fracturing chemicals are required to treat the fracturing fluids are known as viscosifiers, surficants and biocides. What these compounds are and why they are required and how much is being used as a percentage of water used in a single frack one can search the web for a description, and fracking groundwater contamination has been reported in America. Mr. Geoff Morrison’s letter to the local press that the American Head of Environmental Protection is not aware of any groundwater contamination is confusing and could well sow mistrust in the eyes of the public. Mr. Morrison speaks for B.C. that drinking water has not been contaminated or is it groundwater is somewhat different? He also places great emphasis on regulation, however, accidents can happen and do happen especially when chemicals are pumped into the ground and Mr. Morrison seems to display a degree of sensitivity as a member of the general resource industry that is currently under a degree of stress. This is understandable when one views the populations disquiet over the number of resource industry mishaps that have occurred in the last few years and continue to occur including mine exploContinued on Pg. 9

What we know about the Polley Mine spill

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

Today I’ll attempt to cut through the speculation and fear-mongering that have swirled around the Mount Polley mine dam breach and tell you what’s really known. As Black Press and our local publication the Williams Lake Tribune reported before and after the incident, the mine reopened in 2005 after a four-year shutdown and was expanding its operation, including the tailings pond. Rising metal prices helped put 380 unionized employees plus management back to work. Most are now working on rebuilding the tailings dam and cleaning up the spill site. Imperial Metals applied earlier this summer for an increase in water discharge, and was waiting for B.C. government approval at the time of the

Aug. 4 dam breach. This was to be the second amendment to a water release permit issued when the mine started up in 1997. It has had a surplus of water due to rain and snow accumulation since it opened (under an NDP government, for those who want to turn everything into a political corruption story). The reason water release has been allowed is that in the absence of acidproducing rock, metal contamination of water is minimized. Imperial Metals’ routine tests with rainbow trout in undiluted tailings pond water have now been confirmed by environment ministry results, and water and fish from all but the immediate spill area have been cleared for human consumption. For an example of acid mine drainage, look up the Britannia Mine Museum,

now a reclaimed national historic site with a water treatment plant built to function for hundreds of years. Before that, acid-produced toxic metal pollution drained from the abandoned mine into Howe Sound for decades. Early tests at Mount Polley indicate that this sort of long-term water remediation may not be required. The initial pulse of suspended sediment didn’t last long enough to affect fish in most of Quesnel Lake, much less the Fraser River system. Sediment tests show elevated iron and copper, with “leachability” results to come. Containment and removal will have to be undertaken. On May 24 of this year, Mount Polley received the first high water warning in its history. This was not a “breach,” contrary to some reports. The latest water

permit application and work to raise the dam took place after that. It’s not difficult to deduce from aerial photos what was happening as mine management found ways to extend operation, including an underground phase. The pond was filling up with pulverized rock, reducing its capacity to hold water. Most of the accumulation is still there for all to see, as is the crosssection of the dam so abruptly exposed in the wee hours of Aug. 4. It may be months before inspectors and geotechnical engineers can determine the cause of the breach, which occurred with the water level 2.5 metres below the top of the dam, well within permit specifications. Either the design of the earthworks was not adequate, or

B.C.’s Opioid Substitution Treatment (OST) system, which replaces heroin and other illegal narcotics with medically prescribed opiates such as methadone, is being touted as a success—but there’s still progress to be made. A recent report published by the Office of the Provincial Health Officer of B.C. has concluded that the increase in availability of the treatment, as well as the increase in average duration of treatment of OST patients, has “helped contribute

to the lower incidence of HIV infection among those who inject drugs,” as well as decrease the mortality rate of those addicted to opiates. The report is a followup to the 2010 analysis from the Centre for Addictions Research of BC, in which methadone initiatives between 1996 and 2008 were found to have declining retention rates and distribution issues caused partially by a lack of comprehensive implementation strategy along with accountability and responsibility issues within the system. You have group disability insurance at work and that’s a good thing – but will it fill all your financial gaps should a disability keep you from earning a living?

Know what you have and what you need Group disability insurance plans are offered by employers and you also have the option of purchasing individual coverage directly from an insurer. Start by reading your employee benefits booklet • to understand exactly what your group insurance plan covers and where the gaps are. For example: •

Check the definition of disability. This is very important: Some plans cover only a total disability with no provision for a partial disability – meaning that if your doctor clears you to return to work for only limited hours each day, you could lose all your disability benefits. As well, many group disability benefits cease after two years if you can perform the duties of any gainful occupation for which you are suited.

4x10 Investors

Check the benefit caps. Many plans replace 60 to 70% of income but are subject to maximum limits based on your income. Therefore, your Group disability plan may not replace the level of income you need. Check the taxes. If your employer pays any portion of your disability insurance premiums, any payments you receive will be subject to income tax. When you pay the premiums, there are usually no tax consequences on benefit payments to you. (source: Canada Revenue Agency’s Interpretation Bulletin IT-428) Check the portability. If you change jobs (and most Canadians tend to have a number of jobs over their lifetime) and your group plan is owned by your employer, might not offer the ability to convert your group coverage to a personal plan. On the other hand, an individual disability policy that you own and pay for is fully portable and non-

cancellable as long as you pay the premiums. •

Check the possibility of changes. With a group plan, disability definitions and benefits may change and premiums may increase at any time. With individual insurance, the terms and conditions can’t be changed once the policy is in force and premium rates are guaranteed not to increase before your 65th birthday unless you choose to adjust your coverage.

When you depend on your own ability to generate an income, you need adequate disability insurance. Started in 1990 by the Campbell River Running Club, the Miracle Beach 5 & 10 K run is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. According to organizers, the run is one of the friendliest and most relaxed events on the Island running calendar. It offers a flat course on country roads and racers are treated to hot soup and cookies post-race along with prize draws for pies and pumpkins. River Runners, in conjunction with the Recreation Department, are offering another beginner run clinic for those who would like to train for the 5 or 10K distances at Miracle Beach. The clinic starts on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Willow Point Sportsplex. Each week there are group runs for different speeds and distances. Some weeks will have

One of the season’s most popular events at Saratoga Speedway went off without a hitch (get it?) on Aug. 16. The annual Crashto-Pass Boat Race saw competitors and their towed watercraft smash, crash, and pass their way around the track to the delight of those in attendance.

Ladies’ Night and the Rowdie Roadie

The public will have vehicle access to the park via the new BC Hydro / BC Parks parking area and the lower Park parking lot. Use of all walking trails will be allowed with occasional requests for control for short periods during actual filming.

Join us for guided women’s only mountain bike rides in the Snowden Demonstration Forest, Thursdays at 6pm, as well as all-levels road rides Wed 6.30pm and Sun 10am.

For information please contact Vancouver Island North Film Commission 250 287 2772 or film.info@infilm.ca

Artists band together for first Wet Paint art sale

A group of art friends who have painted and shared their passion for several years are excited to be hosting their first “Wet Paint” art sale in a Saratoga Beach garden this weekend. The nine artists, from Dove Creek, Black Creek, Campbell River and Sayward, plan to delight the senses with their fresh and marvelous array of paintings. The art of Lee Caflisch, Loree Cunningham, Sonia Hauser, Michelle Ohlsson, Elaine Prodor, Lesley Rieck, Kathi Rudko, Karen Martin Sampson and Victoria Scott represent a wide range of experience from a few years to more than two decades and an eclectic mix of subjects and styles. Seascapes, landscapes, still life, figurative art and abstracts in a variety of mediums (pastel, oil, watercolour and acrylic) will be on display at the show. While our coastal environment can be seen reflected in many of the artists’ works, the style and interpretation of each painter is unique. Several of the artists will have their easels set up and be painting ‘en plein air’. They will be will be happy to discuss their process, technique and inspiration with the public. All this visual stimuli will be enhanced by the mellow vibes of Jeff Drummond on guitar and John Hyde on bass from 12-2 p.m. The show and sale will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in Lesley’s Saratoga Beach garden at 8870 Clarkson Drive, Black Creek.

CLASSIC: Proceeds to benefit Campbell River Legion ood times have never seemed so good for this Neil Diamond impersonator. Joey Purpura’s vocal impersonation of the famous singer will be reaching out and touching you as he brings his show to the Campbell River Legion Saturday, August 30. There is a general feeling that’s evoked in the show, Purpura said. Seeing people happy. “I had no idea how beloved Diamond is. And I had no idea how powerful his music was - and still is - to people,” he said. Seeing Diamond fans light up and seeing audience members smile or cry when they hear his ballads. He said this as a satisfying part of his job. “Response is so good

assed away peacefully Frank passed in his sleep. Predeceased by his wife Silvana and his brother Joe, he is survived by his sister Anna, his sons Ocean (Amanda) and Mike (Laurie), and his granddaughters Rachel, Elizabeth, and Katelyn. Frank was born in St. Galen, Switzerland. He was the oldest of three children and was raised by his single mother, Rosina. As a youth, he worked sweeping the market floors after school to contribute to the household income. Like all Swiss men, he served two years in the Swiss army where he was also a marching drummer. He was trained and apprenticed as a machinist. Frank met Silvana in 1947 in Lausanne, Switzerland when she moved there to find work from Florence, Italy after the war. They married in 1948 and in 1949 they made a notable trip on Frank’s motorcycle to Florence to meet her family. Frank and Silvana immigrated to Canada in 1952. Like so many other immigrants from Europe, they entered Canada at Pier 49 in Halifax. Some stayed in the Maritimes, but the rest of the new arrivals embarked across Canada by train. Many got off at Montreal and Toronto, but Frank and Silvana were headed for BC because Frank had done his research and being Swiss and an avid outdoorsman, he wanted to be where the mountains were. After a year, living in New Westminster, doing odd jobs and trying to make a go of it, Frank got a job as a millwright in Ocean Falls. It was in Ocean Falls that they started their family with first son Richard (Ocean) born in 1954 and second son Michael (Mike) born in 1955. It was also in Ocean Falls that they met and befriended many of the people who would become lifelong friends. Frank enjoyed Ocean Falls for the hunting, fishing and the close and supportive community that existed there. In 1962, Frank transferred to Elk Falls mill in Campbell River. Frank loved Campbell River and referred to it as God’s Country. Soon after arriving, they purchased a house with two acres at Shelter Point. Over the next few years, Frank built a new house where the family resided and where the boys grew to adulthood. Frank retired in 1986 and in the late 1980s, they moved to a house on Twillingate Rd. In the early 1990s, they moved to Willow Point Villas. Silvana passed away in September 2000. Shortly after that, Frank made a solo trip to Hong Kong and Australia to visit relatives. He subsequently made another trip to the Philippines. In the last decade of his life, Frank was fortunate to meet Marie Mychan who became his loving friend. They had a wonderful relationship and did many fun things together. Indeed, Marie was welcomed into the family by all. In the last years of his life, Frank was fortunate to be a regular attendee of the Campbell River Adult Daycare Society. The family would wholeheartedly like to thank the women there who enriched his life in a warm and supportive way; as well, the family's gratitude goes out to the home support workers who came into Frank's home to help him manage an independent lifestyle as long as was possible. They were notable for their gentle, compassionate care. Frank will be missed. A memorial for Frank will be held at Sutton’s Campbell River Funeral Home on August 25, 2014 at 1pm. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

LEE, IRENE ELSE May 20, 1955 July 29, 2014 Born May 20, 1955 in Grand Prairie AB. Irene passed away peacefully at her home in Black Creek, BC on July 29, 2014 at the age of 59. Predeceased by her father Jack Pressner (1998) brother Gary Pressner (2009) and beloved Maltese Bailey (2013). She is survived by former husband Gordon Lee, daughter Heather (Brian), grandson Victor, mother Kathy McDougal, brother Ralph (Nicole), niece Jordan and nephews Seth, Andy and Tanner. She will also be missed by many friends whom she considered to be family, such as Pat and Cindy, Gary and Wanda, Peter and Uche, Bill and Carmen, Bob, Nan, and many others. Living in Grand Prairie, AB until the age of 13 (1968), Irene and her family moved to Princeton for slightly more than one year then continued on to settle in Campbell River (1969). Irene went on to graduate from Carihi in 1973 with bursaries to attend BCIT but due to a two year waitlist, did not enroll. She was eager to get started with her adult life and accepted a job at BC TEL where she made many friends. Later she took brief employment with Campbell River Credit union which lead her to accepting a position at CIBC in 1981 where she again made many friends and continued to work until regrettably taking an indefinite absence due to medical reasons. Irene met Gord in 1975. Together they enjoyed fishing, camping, listening to music, taking small trips and spending time with friends. Irene and Gord were married April 18, 1986 in Burnaby at their good friends Peter and Uches. After which they flew, aside from her fear of flying, to Jamaica for their honeymoon. After the birth of their daughter Heather (1985), they continued to camp and took many small trips throughout BC and the western United States. Although separated in 2009, Irene and Gord maintained a friendship and many mutual friends. Irene will be missed by many but more so she will always be there to watch over us. Irenes family requests services be held at a later date. If any contributions are felt necessary, the family asks that donations be made to Kidney Foundation in Irene's name.

Cramb, Susan Elaine Waterman September 24, 1969 August 9, 2014 It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Susan, taken from us at the young age of 44. After a long battle with cancer, she passed peacefully surrounded by family in Campbell River on the morning of the 9th. Susan was born in Comox B.C. on September 24th, 1969 to Diana and Gordon Waterman. Susan grew up in Gold River, then went on to Douglas College in Vancouver where she earned her Registered Psychiatric Nurse designation. Susan enjoyed her career, most of it spent with the great team at St. Joseph's Psychiatry in Comox. She was an avid birdie hunter, hitting the badminton courts a few times a week. Susan also loved gardening, camping and watching her daughters play hockey and never hesitated to give a referee an earful if she thought her girls had been wronged. She is survived by her loving husband Sean Cramb, daughters Miaya and Sarah Cramb, parents Gordon and Diana Waterman, sister Lisa (Dave) Latham, grandmother Margaret Rutledge, mother and father-in-law Helen and Ken Cramb, brothersin-law Pat (Kim) and Kelly (Janice), as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service is being planned for September and details will be forthcoming.

Edward Anthony Thompson August 16, 1940 August 8, 2014 Ed passed away peacefully after a 2 1/2 year stint with cancer. Survived by his loving wife Jean of 50 years. Leaving his three adult children: James (Deborah Vanhooren) and Christine (Derek Patterson) of Ontario and Michael (Sheila Lavigne) of Nanoose Bay, brother John (Lilly passed from cancer in July) of Ontario, nephew Johnny (Anya) and grandchildren Richard, Ocean, David & Daniel. Born in Leeds, England, Ed came to Toronto at the age of 10 1/2 with his parents and younger brother John. He and Jean moved to Montreal in 1964; 2 weeks after marriage, and lived there for 9 years, raising their 3 children. They moved back to Toronto in 1972, then to Campbell River 1994. They loved the outdoors, fishing, canoeing, camping and spending time with family; Ed was also an avid dart player. During his employment, he was involved with international freight, brokerage, land, air and ocean freight; in sales as well as management. During their time in Campbell River, they were both subcontracted with Ace Courier for 6 years. Many thanks to all of the many doctors, nurses, & hospice volunteers for all their care and support; too many to mention. A million thanks to all my children and spouses for all their help. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society would be welcome. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.

Rockin’ the Island The first of a hopefully-annual music festival took place in Campbellton Aug. 16, and despite a few logistical issues, those few in attendance enjoyed the show. Numbers were well below expected attendance, but MC Diane Pancel (above) said that the organizers are still hoping to go forward with the series. The day-long concert featured Vancouver-Island-only talent, including local bands Time Well Wasted and Bentwood Boyz, as well as some who made the trip up from Victoria, such as Quoia (left) and Georgia Murray (top right) to entertain the crowd.

The City of Campbell River Recreation and Culture Department will extend summer camps until school is back in session. Summer Camp 2.0 will provide an opportunity for children aged 6 to 11 years to participate in an active and adventurefilled camp exploring Campbell River and the surrounding area. Each day will combine games and activities at Centennial Park and field trips to local beaches, lakes and parks. On rainy days, participants will spend time at the indoor pool or the Sportsplex. “This camp was created to offer parents another childcare option and to give kids a great experience,” says Kevin Elmore, a recreation program coordinator. The camp will run 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. daily from Monday to Friday until school is back in session, as long as minimum registration numbers are met. The cost of the camp is $35 a day. To register or for more information, call 250-923-7911 or 250-286-1161.

New radio channels to be used on local logging roads

New mobile radio channels for forestry workers and other resource road users will take effect beginning Aug. 23 on Vancouver Island and parts of the South Coast. Campbell River, South Island and Sunshine Coast resource districts will be converting to new resource road radio channels, while the North Island and Sea to Sky resource districts will for the first time be adopting standard resource road channels and call protocols. The changes will impact Forest Service Roads and some Road Permit roads in these areas. All affected road users will need to program the new channels into their mobile radios. Drivers are advised to retain current radio channels and frequencies until they are no longer

required. New signs posted on local resource roads will advise which radio channels to use and provide the communication protocols, including the road name and required

calling intervals. Vehicle operators using mobile radios to communicate their location and direction of travel must use the posted radio channels and call protocols. All resource road users

in the affected areas should exercise additional caution. Drivers are reminded that forest service roads are radioassisted, not radio-controlled, and therefore it’s essential to drive safely

according to road and weather conditions. Local resource road safety committees have worked with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and Industry Can-

ada to implement these changes. Learn more about resource road radio communications protocols online at: www.for.gov. bc.ca/hth/engineering/ Road_Radio_Project.

htm or by contacting the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations district office in your area or Industr y Canada at 1-800-667-3780.
