Driving into Broadmead Village, it’s difficult to imagine a North West Mounted Policeman bounding towards Rithet’s Bog with Rin Tin Tin leading the charge. But in the late 1930s, that’s exactly what was happening on the site. Now, the Free-B Film Festival is offering locals a chance to discover those little-known moments with an outdoor screening of Death Goes North on Aug. 23. “The film was part of what was called the Quota of Quickies,” said Donovan Aikman, programmer at Victoria Film Festival. “The British were trying to keep out American product, so they introduced a piece of legislation that required 15 per cent of films shown in Britain to be filmed in Commonwealth countries.” Greater Victoria, a relatively quick journey from Los Angeles, was the ideal site for a number of “Quota of Quickies” productions, which were usually tacked on as double features with U.S. films to satisfy U.K. screening rules. SAANICH NEWS - Wednesday, August 20, 2014
COMMUNITY NEWS IN BRIEF
Carey Road jewelry store robbed Two men brazenly robbed a jewelry store in the 4200-block of Carey Rd. Thursday, and the suspects are still at large. Around 4 p.m., two men entered the business with their faces covered and smashed a glass display cabinet, said Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eassie. “Within seconds, the suspects grabbed a quantity of jewelry and fled the store on foot,” Eassie said. The men fled northbound on Carey Road in the direction of Wilkinson Road. A K9 unit was dispatched but police were unable to locate the suspects. “Police investigators are making efforts to retrieve video footage from the store,” Eassie said. “The video will not be shared with the public at this time.” Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact Saanich police at 250-475-4321 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477.

Five alive:
Field hockey athlete reps Saanich in China
Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China feature new 5-on-5 field hockey game Travis Paterson News staff
Harbir Sidhu is half a world away at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, this week, and the promising national team field hockey player is playing a half-sized version of the game. The Youth Olympics is using the newly popularized five-versus-five format of field hockey. If anyone stands to benefit from the game, it’s Canadians, who have their own versions of five on five ball hockey and are used to the fastpaced style and open spaces the five-aside format brings. Fives, as it’s known, runs with three 15-minute periods, three quarters the length of the traditional 60-minute game. Players take shifts, just like in ball hockey or ice hockey. Sidhu’s job is to score. It’s something he’s good at. “I love to score and to set plays up so I really enjoy the five-versusfive version,” said Sidhu, a Mount Douglas secondary student. “The field’s only about one third smaller than the usual field, but with five players instead of 11, it opens up a lot of space to move the ball around.” This year was Sidhu’s first as a regular starter on the Victoria Select men’s team in the long running premier division of the Vancouver Field Hockey League. Despite it being a tough season for the Selects with just two wins in 16 games, it was monumental for Sidhu, who grew up practising on the sidelines while watching uncles and cousins play for the Selects. “Sidhu has the potential to be a really, really good player,” said Kevin Laidman, head coach of the UVic Vikes men’s team. Sidhu and Claremont’s Michael Brown are the only high schoolers who practised regularly with the Vikes this past season.
Travis Paterson/News staff
Sharp striker Harbir Sidhu is representing Saanich with Team Canada’s national junior field hockey team at the Youth Olympics in China this month. “He already stands out at our UVic practices. He’s smaller than the university-age guys, but you can see he stands out as a star already. Whether he’ll be that good for Canada, it’s hard to say,” Laidman said. Sidhu enjoyed his 17th birthday on Aug. 14, the team’s first day of training in Nanjing. With only nine players representing Team Canada, spots were at a premium for the Youth Olympics. Sidhu spent the better part of
the summer at the University of British Columbia where he’s part of a small group of Victoria players, with cousin Amardeep Sidhu (Mount Douglas) and Brown (Claremont), who train regularly with the national junior program. Sidhu wasn’t included in Canada’s junior team that qualified for Nanjing at the Pan American tournament earlier this year, but made it onto the Youth Olympic team. “I had to work hard to get included for China,” Sidhu said.
“Sidhu is very humble, he’s willing to learn, and given his age he’s pretty impressive,” Laidman added. The Canadian junior field hockey team competes in the Nanjing Youth Olympics from Aug. 17 to 27. Nanjing is the second Youth Olympics. Victoria Royals’ defenceman Joe Hicketts captained the Canadian ice hockey team at the Youth Winter Olympics in 2012. reporter@saanichnews.com

Mountie Ken Strange (played by Edgar Edwards), right, and Dan MacKenzie (Michael Heppell) share the screen with Rin Tin Tin Jr. in the 1939 film Death Goes North, filmed in and around Saanich.
Rithet’s Estates a perfect location for Hollywood film Continued from Page A1
In the hour-long film, Rin Tin Tin Jr., the mystery-solving German shepherd, teams up with Mountie Ken Strange (played by Edgar Edwards) at a Canadian logging camp. Strange and Dan MacKenzie (Michael Heppell) are called in to investigate the death of timber heiress Elsie Barlow’s (Shelia Bromley) uncle. But the plot soon thickens as the police realize someone may be an imposter. “The film crew did move around a lot throughout the region,” Aikman said. A frontier town scene was likely filmed on Saltspring Island, but primary filming was done in and around Broadmead, known then as Rithet’s Estates Forest, he added. Death Goes North will be preceded
by a classic Max Fleischer Superman cartoon, Volcano, followed by Canadian Mounties vs Atomic Invaders, a Republic movie serial featuring Canadian Mounted Police in their fight to stop a foreign power from setting up secret missile bases in Canada. Movie goers are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. Snacks and hot drinks are available at a variety of Broadmead Village merchants. “We secretly hope there’s someone who’s still in the area and was in the film,” Aikman said. “That would be incredible to get a first-hand account of the filming.” The evening kicks off Saturday at 9 p.m. in the Broadmead Village parking lot. See freebfilmfest.com for more information. editor@saanichnews.com

SilverCity gets Sunday service

Centennial United assumes new home at Saanich theatre

Victoria’s modern minded Lighthouse Church is rethinking tradition. Pastor Scott McDowell and the Presbyterian Lighthouse congregation are leaving behind the iconic, red brick monument that is Centennial United Church of Rockland for the glitz and glamour of SilverCity Victoria Cinemas. It’s a much more logical move than it might appear, said McDowell, who is well rooted in Tillicum already. His family of five are stationed just across the street from Tillicum Centre. “It’s not a new idea to run a church service out of a theatre but it’s new to SilverCity in Saanich,” McDowell said. “My family’s been in Tilllicum for three years and we love the neighbourhood. Our kids are at Tillicum elementary. Now we’re hoping the church will grow as part of an already great community.” McDowell is originally from Mississippi. He came to Canada a decade ago, after years of community development work in Nairobi, Kenya, where he met his wife. Both his parents are university professors. His father

Pastor Scott McDowell and the Lighthouse Church congregation will run their service at Tillicum’s SilverCity cinema. McDowell lives nearby and loves the community. Scott is particularly excited about the church’s new setting, as film is the focus of his teachings as the University of Southern Mississippi. “People know the experience of the theatre, it’s a comfortable and welcoming setting,” McDowell said. The idea is to create a space where people can find answers to questions of ‘who they are, what is their salvation, and is there hope and forgiveness?.’” Lighthouse will run its first SilverCity service this Sunday, Aug. 24, a chance to work out some of the kinks before debuting its blend of modern
music with traditional, robust theology, at the official launch on Sept. 7. The change of location also means resetting the service from its current 5 p.m. at Centennial United to a more traditional start time of 10 a.m. With 10 cinemas available, SilverCity has taken many tenants as well as other expanded programming. Some come to watch the opera or sporting events, other groups will rent a screen for a giant video gaming experience. Here in town, Lighthouse is following the model run by West Village Church pastor Chris Synasael, a friend
of McDowell’s who’s run the Baptist service out of the Cineplex Odeon Theatre in Langford for two years. “We’ll run a simultaneous Sunday school service in an adjacent theatre and will also have use of the cinema’s party room and play area for wee tots.”

OUR VIEW
Don’t let history fade Saanich and its residents have created and been affected by many newsworthy moments over the past quarter-century, and over the coming months, we’ll be taking some time to remind our readers of those moments. On Page A13, find our new “Through the decades” column, which pulls the most interesting stories of the week from years past in our extensive archives. Reflecting on those moments can be novel (as with Voyager II’s 1989 live image feed of Neptune back to earth), disappointing (as with the mysterious poisoning of several vibrant trees along Gorge Road West in 2004) and joyful (as the community gathers this week to celebrate 20 years since the start of the Commonwealth Games – look for that story Friday). We’ll be asking readers to send in their memories of those moments for publication and hopefully add to the already rich sense of community that exists in our idyllic municipality.
Front pages tell a story
The News team is also somberly remembering one particularly unforgettable event in Saanich’s history this week. On Dec. 3, 1997, the community’s grief surrounding the murder of Reena Virk was still visceral. Our front page captured that grief and the ongoing legal proceedings from those dark days, and it’s now in the running for a national award from Newspapers Canada. The awards include a series of categories representing a range of subject matter with the intent of building a collection of stories about significant and uniquely Canadian events, issues and people. Entry categories will include Canadian Politics; Canadian Sports; Canadian Heroes; Canadian Arts/Culture/Entertainment; Canadian Science & Technology; Canada at War / Canadian Armed Forces; Canadian Communities and Canada on the International Stage. Some stories dating from 1864 to present day are still open for public voting. Head to frontpages.ca to check it out, and look for Through the Decades in subsequent copies of Saanich News.

interested in hearing from the public. Real action to help farmers would focus on helping them grow their crops, their livestock and their businesses, not on making it easier to develop farmland. Instead, the B.C. Liberals have continually cut the agriculture ministry, slashed extension officers and eliminated programs like Buy B.C. that helped raise the profile of local products. The ALR was created as an intergenerational legacy to benefit all British Columbians. It shouldn’t be at the mercy of an election cycle or undermined at the whim of a minister. As the ongoing drought in California shows, we can’t depend on being always able to get our food from elsewhere. There are definitely some changes to the ALR that New Democrats could support – changes that would help farmers, not the developers that make 90 per cent of the applications for land removals from the ALR. Unfortunately, this botched consultation process is more evidence that the B.C. Liberals have an agenda that’s bad for farmland and bad for farmers. Lana Popham is the MLA for Saanich-South and New Democrat agriculture critic.

LETTERS Charity audit targets not so simplistic Re: Rankin wrong: Minister (News, Aug. 15) Dear Minister of National Revenue: I read your letter to the editor discussing matters regarding auditing charitable organizations. I was amazed that you would think we would believe all the explanations you provide. For instance many of us are involved in giving to these organizations and we know who is being audited. It is puzzling to me why you defend the Canada Revenue Agency ruling of secrecy and your claim that it makes the compliance regime more effective. Surely there is a better way to do this than trying to pretend there is secrecy and that it is effective. Contrary to your view that there is no political bias in selecting organizations to audit, it is public knowledge that a number of audits were aimed at
environmental groups who have taken positions that may run counter to the Harper agenda. We are also aware that Oxfam was advised to alter its mission statement by changing the wording of the “prevention of poverty” to “alleviation of poverty,” raising questions about whether refusal would interfere with their charitable status. What on earth do you people understand about poverty and what is the basis of such a request? These are just a few examples that have frustrated the citizenry and which your letter does nothing to alleviate. Please give Canadian citizens some credit for their intelligence. Have you learned nothing from past years about the public’s increasingly urgent demands for honesty, accountability and transparency from our democratic government? Jessie Mantle Saanich
Car crashes are exactly that Re: It’s no accident (News, Aug. 13) I am all in favour of eliminating the term “accident” when it comes to motor vehicle incidences. I am glad to see that the terminology is getting some public review. I would even be happier if the term was never used again in the media, and perhaps it could start with the Saanich News. There are very few car accidents. There are a lot of car crashes, car collisions and motor vehicle incidences. The vast majority are caused by idiots. Any idiot is entitled to drive a car. It is an idiot who thinks that there is no rhyme or rhythm to the rules of the road. Some seem unnecessary, but they are there for a reason. The reason is generally to promote better road safety. A crash caused by excessive speeding is not an accident. It is some idiot who has no respect for others, no respect for the
rules of the road and often thinks that they are above the law. It is no accident when a crash occurs when a driver performs a rolling stop or runs a stop sign. The sign reads “STOP,” not “slow down.” The list goes on. An accident is something that is totally unavoidable. Please do not use the word “accident” in the context of a motor vehicle incident again. R. D. Townsend Saanich

the rearview mirror and shrugged. (After all, it was clear I was the nut!) We have paid huge dollars for fire fighting including bringing firefighters from Australia. Areas of Vancouver Island are tinder dry and we haven’t had much appreciable rain since June. The province (we paid for this) is running a TV campaign showing NOT to do just exactly what this driver did. We are paying big bucks to fight fires and build public awareness. But that only applies to others, it seems. This is obviously the same person that wastes water, doesn’t recycle his garbage and drives to the corner store while texting his wife about their plans for the evening. Days of fighting fires in the Interior while watching people lose their homes seems justifiable to this kind of person, I suppose. D. A. Moxley Saanich

Local car enthusiasts joined the German Auto Import Network and a whole host of community supporters Sunday to raise more than $75,000 for Island families at the 2014 Vancouver Island Motor Gathering. Hosted at Saanich Peninsula’s Viscount Aero Centre, the sun-filled day showcased a wide variety of unique collector cars including a rare collection of airplanes, automobiles from Rudi Koniczek and Tim Quocksister, and motorcycles from the Deeley Motorcycle Exhibition. A summer highlight for two decades (previously held at the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health), the event raised much-needed funds for both the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. More than 2,800 visitors and some 200 collector vehicles of all makes, models and years packed out the venue. Awards were presented in a variety of categories, from Most Original, Best Classic Post-War and Best Street Rod to Best Classic Motorcycle, Best Muscle Car and Best of Show. The family-friendly event had activities for all ages and included the always-popular Tom Thumb safety cars, a bouncy castle, facepainting, a salmon barbecue, live music and more. Ruggers help Canada to final Velox winger Jess Dovanne started in the 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup final in France on Sunday, as Canada lost a dramatic match to England, 21-9. Second place is Canada’s highest achievement at the WRWC, a massive improvement on past finishes of fifth and sixth place. Dovanne, 28, played at UVic in 2005 before moving to Velox where she won multiple provincial club championships with the Velox Valkyries premier women’s team, based in Saanich. Former Vike Brittany Waters, 31, started in place of Dovanne in the semifinal versus France. Waters was a Vike from 2001 to 2005. Dovanne and Waters have also appeared for Canada’s rugby sevens team and are Olympic hopefuls when rugby union’s short code debuts at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Be Septic Savvy This Summer TIP SEVEN
IT’S OK TO BE A LITTLE SENSITIVE.
Septic systems are a little sensitive, so the only items that should be flushed are human waste and toilet paper. Flushing other items can clog your septic system. Put items like dental floss, flushable wipes, hair, feminine hygiene products and facial tissue in the garbage.
Stay informed. A bylaw is in effect in Saanich, Colwood, Langford & View Royal, stay informed about the requirements for your septic system.
Get your Septic Savvy Household Info Kit at your municipal hall or visit crd.bc.ca/septic for more tips and resources, or to register for a free workshop. Call 250.360.3030 for more information.

SAANICH SAANICH NEWS NEWS -- Wednesday, Wednesday, August August 20, 20, 2014 2014
Saanich news ... through the decades Editor’s note: The News is taking a regular look through our archives to remind readers what was making history 10, 20 and 25 years ago. To share memories of any of these moments, email editor@saanichnews. com with “Through the decades” in the subject line. 10 years ago … Saanich Parks and Saanich Police Department raised alarm bells after several elm, maple, arbutus and fruit trees were poisoned along a stretch of Gorge Road West. Saanich Parks manager Ray Roer said municipal staff would make a point of reporting all suspected poisoned tree cases to police under a new policy, in hopes of catching the mischievous suspects. 20 years ago … The 20th Commonwealth Games was in full swing as 398 Canadian athletes competed during the 10-day event, held at venues across Greater Victoria including Centennial Stadium, McKinnon gym, Juan de Fuca fields and Saanich Commonwealth Place. … the Mount Tolmie Community Association and Gordon Head residents successfully fought off plans by the District of Saanich to allow temporary parking at Horner Park for Commonwealth
Games attendees. The group managed to get a B.C. Supreme Court injunction preventing the municipality from removing posts or building a ramp to allow for vehicle parking. 25 years ago … After a 12-year journey, NASA’s Voyager II spacecraft reached Neptune, much to the amazement of astrophysicist Chris Aikman at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Saanich. Aikman and other astrophysicists were on hand at the Royal B.C. Museum’s Newcombe Theatre, where live images of the pass-by were broadcast for the public. “This will be the last time for this kind of opportunity in many, many years,” Aikman told the News on Aug. 16, 1989. It appears he was right.
