Mine dam inspections ordered across B.C. Tom Fletcher Black Press Independent engineering inspections have been ordered for Mount Polley mine near Williams Lake and nearly 100 other mine tailings ponds with permits across the province, with reports to be complete by the end of January. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett announced the dual reviews Monday. The Mount Polley investigation is to be complete by Jan. 31 and will be done concurrently with the B.C. government’s
legally required probes by B.C.’s chief inspector of mines and the environment ministry, which looks at the longer-term effects of the Aug. 4 tailings spill. Bennett said costs will be covered by Imperial Metals for Mount Polley and by all operators of mines with permits to operate nearly 100 tailings facilities in B.C. “Certainly in the last 40 years there’s no evidence of a tailings dam breach in British Columbia, but rare or not, it happened, and so the public’s confidence I think

Bennett said the panel was chosen with approval of the Williams Lake and Soda Creek Indian Bands, and their report will be made available to the band councils at the same time as government. Independent inspections of other mine tailings ponds must be completed Dec. 1, a change from the March 31 deadline for inspections that are required annually. Bennett said these inspections will each have to be reviewed by an independent geotechnical engineering firm.

NEWS Routes available through Borland construction site As road paving continues on Borland Street, the city is reminding the public about alternate access routes to the government building, the police station and businesses. The government building can be accessed from the entrance closest to Fourth Avenue, while the police station can be accessed from the entrance closest to Seventh Avenue and from the back lane off of Seventh Avenue, opposite Save-On-Foods. Businesses on the RCMP side of the street can be accessed via Fourth Avenue and the back lane. The daycare, mean-
while, can be accessed from Fourth Avenue. Peterson Contracting traffic manager and geotech Sandi Raincock said the company will be putting up new signs, which will be posted at every area where they are working, notifying people of the alternate routes. If persons with disabilities are unsure of where to go, or need assistance, they are asked to speak to a traffic control person on site, who will do their best to accommodate and assist them. “We will do everything to accommodate people, traffic and businesses,” Raincock said. “People with
questions, come to a flagger and talk to them on site. We appreciate everyone’s patience and we’ll get through this as quickly as we can.” Starting on Thursday or Friday, and for the next few weeks, work will shift to the Seventh Avenue side of the project. Access to the RCMP building will remain unchanged, while access to the government building will be available from the entrance closest to Seventh Avenue. Businesses on the south side of Borland Street will only be able to be accessed by the back lane, and signage will be put up.

First Nations and gov’t partner on Mount Polley Mine breach The Williams Lake Indian Band and the Soda Creek Indian Band (Xat’sull First Nation) signed a letter of understanding with the Government of B.C. to work in partnership to address all aspects of the breach of the tailings storage facility that occurred at the Mount Polley Mine on Aug. 4. The agreement has five components that will be conducted in accordance with First Nations traditions and scientific knowledge and recognizes the health and safety of the public and workers, including members of the First Nations, are paramount: 1.) A principals table consisting of the First Nations and the Ministers of Environment, Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, and Energy and Mines will oversee a government-to-government
response. 2.) A senior officials committee from the three ministries and designates for the First Nations will be responsible for overseeing all of the response activities such as assessing impacts, clean up, remediation planning and decisions related to future requirements to respond to all aspects of the Mount Polley incident. 3.) $200,000 to each First Nation ($400,000 in total) to cover the costs already incurred and future costs related to the tailings pond breach. 4.) The recognition of the important economic contribution of mining to B.C. and the commencement of a dialogue about existing laws, regulations and policies in relation to the mining sector in B.C. 5.) Agreement that the entities responsible

Williams Lake Indian Band Chief Ann Louie said the letter of understanding is only the beginning of a process for mining reforms in B.C. “The provincial government bears the re-
sponsibility to effectively collaborate with First Nations on a government-to-government basis on meaningful reforms to build confidence with all our communities that mineral exploration and mining is a safe industry,” Louie said. “At this point that confidence still needs to be earned.” The provincial gov-
ernment and First Nations have been clear since the breach occurred that finding out exactly what happened, ensuring this never happens again and moving quickly on remediation plans to protect and preserve the environment are top priorities. Soda Creek Indian Band Chief Bev Sellars said up until now there
has not been the level of co-operation and collaboration required between the two sides. “Not only does this agreement commit our respective governments to joint oversight and decision-making in regards to all aspects of response to the Mount Polley Mine disaster, it also allows First Nations and the provincial government to begin a necessary conversation about the adequacy of existing laws, regulations and policy in regards to the overall mining sector,” Sellars said. Minister of Environment Mary Polak said the agreement is a good step in the right direction. “I’m confident we will work constructively with the local First Nations to build their trust and to create a forum to establish an ongoing relationship,” Polak said.
Rodeo accident claims life The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died tragically at the Redstone Rodeo near Alexis Creek on Sunday. He was Jason Lyle Coutlee, 44, of Merritt. “Mr. Coutlee was riding in the mountain race at the Redstone Rodeo on the afternoon of Aug. 17 when he fell from his horse,” said North Region Coroner, Donita Kuzma. “He was immediately taken to the medical clinic at Alexis Creek where it was determined he needed a more advanced level of medical care.” While being transported by helicopter to Kelowna General Hospital, Coutlee sadly passed away. Coutlee’s family has been notified of his death. Kuzma said the BCCS continues to investigate the incident.

Children beginning Kindergarten must be five years of age by December 31, 2014. Children enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2013-14 school year do not need to reregister for Grade 1 if they are attending the same school. A birth certificate or proof of age and presentation of the B.C. “Care Card” is required for registration. Students are to register at the school in their catchment area. Parents not sure of their catchment area may contact their nearest elementary school for information or consult www.sd27.bc.ca (click on “Find the School Nearest You” and enter your address). The French Immersion Program is located at Nesika Elementary School.
Mediator Vince Ready has met the two sides in B.C.’s festering teacher dispute and agreed to “monitor” the situation. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association announced Ready’s involvement in a joint statement Thursday, confirming that he met separately with negotia-
tors Wednesday. A media blackout on the talks began last week and will continue. “Mr. Ready agreed to monitor the situation, and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will be productive,” the statement says. Talks broke off and a full-scale strike ended the school year in June. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher
met both sides earlier but declined to attempt mediation, after finding too large a gap between the two sides. Education Minister Peter Fassbender and BCPSEA chief negotiator Peter Cameron have maintained that the BCTF’s benefit demands remain far beyond those of other public sector unions that have settled contracts. Also at issue is class size and special needs sup-

G
ood news, the BC government, partnering with the Williams Lake and Soda Creek Bands, has launched an independent engineering investigation and inquiry into the Mount Polley Mine tailings pond breach. The study is intended to find out exactly what happened, ensuring it never happens again, and to move on with remediation plans to protect and preserve the environment. According to reports, Mines Minister Bill French Bennett says this Connection is a step toward Diana French restoring public trust in the mining industry. Surely Mr. Bennett knows the public is equally mistrustful of his government’s role in this sorry affair. Some, and Mr. Bennett was one of them, have downplayed the spill, inferring it isn’t really a disaster. Well, according to Wikipedia, a disaster is a “serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts, which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources.” Imperial Metals must have disaster in mind or the company wouldn’t be raising $100 million “to cope” with the mess. No doubt mine employees, contractors, local business persons, and residents of the impacted area see the spill as a “serious disruption” in their lives. Hopefully it’s just a disruption. Only time will tell what the environmental story will be. I have some questions of course. If the mine can get the tailings pond secured to everyone’s satisfaction, can it begin operating again or will it have to wait until the cleanup is complete? A number of different groups are taking water and crud samples. Is there any plan to get them all together for comparison? Why has there been such silence from the federal government? And what about city council? Isn’t it worse losing a mine you have than not getting one you wanted? (A bird in the hand ...) Diana French is a freelance columnist for the Tribune. Our Viewpoint
Ahead of the smoke A lot has happened since Marc Emery went to jail in the United States four years ago. Not the least of which the state in which the Vancouver pot activist was sentenced to five years in federal prison for dealing marijuana seeds has now legalized the sale of cannabis. While Emery cooled his heels behind bars in Folkston, Ga., and Yazoo City, Miss., Colorado and then Washington became the first states to allow the possession, use, production, distribution and personal cultivation of marijuana. Some states have legalized its use for medical reasons. Another 15 states have decriminalized pot while other states have lowered penalties for possession of small amounts to a misdemeanour. The tide to accept marijuana for recreational use on par with alcohol, complete with all the tax revenues their sale generates for governments, seems to be turning. In Canada, possession of marijuana in
any quantity remains illegal. Although enforcement varies from province to province, even between municipalities. Vancouver police were unperturbed by the marijuana smoke that greeted Emery’s triumphant return to his hometown on Sunday. Emery’s incarceration in the U.S. wasn’t his first brush with the law. Nor with irony. When he operated a book shop in London, Ont., in the 1980s, he was charged with defying that province’s laws against stores operating on Sundays. Since 1992 stores in Ontario can open on Sundays. In 1991 he was convicted of selling copies of rap CDs that had been deemed obscene and were banned in Ontario. As Nasty As They Wanna Be by 2 Live Crew can now be easily downloaded on iTunes. It seems once again Emery is on the leading edge of a societal shift.

If you have time this evening, you can support your local 4-H clubs and view some of the best livestock from the Cariboo at the sale. Ranching and livestock is a big part of the economy of the Cariboo-Chilcotin. This sale is helping develop an interest in young people to pursue a career in this very challenging, yet rewarding and fulfilling field. In addition, keeping this vital industry in our province growing and vibrant starts with livestock shows and learning experiences like this Show and Sale. So if you have time, come down and show your support to them by attending the Show and Sale. You can learn more about joining or getting involved with the Williams Lake District 4-H by visiting them online at bc4h. bc.ca. There you can also keep up-to-date with upcoming events and their fundraising initiatives. Donna Barnett is the Liberal MLA for Cariboo-Chilcotin.

Breach a catastrophic event Editor: The breach of the Mount Polley Mines tailings facility is a catastrophic spill of heavy metals and toxic waste by-products into a pure watershed. Polley Lake, Bootjack, Gavin, and Quesnel Lakes, as well as Hazeltine Creek and Cariboo Creek are affected, as are the surrounding lands and the salmon run crucial to First Nations people. It’s a disaster of huge proportions. Quesnel Lake, the deepest fjord lake in the world, is a treasure. The pollution and destruction caused by this spill is unforgiveable. This disaster should never have happened; there was insufficient reinforcement of a huge tailings containment lake of toxic sludge, with heavy metals like cadmium, lead, and possibly arsenic and mercury. Either the engineers were negligent in their assessments of the dam, or they told management that that facilities were insuffi-
cient and management chose to ignore them. Either way, there was extreme negligence, and those responsible should be prosecuted. Imperial Metals could be fined a billion dollars, and the mine shut down permanently. The $150 million bond posted by them will not be enough to cover the cost of reclamation. The water from Quesnel Lake will possibly wash out some of the poisons, but the full scope of this disaster is being downplayed by the media, who are the tools of government. It is a common theme with industry that they take their valued products and leave toxic wastes behind. Mount Polley Mine and Gibraltar have been allowed to monitor their own tailings facilities, like foxes being put in charge of the hen house. Mining is all about money and profits. They are aided and abetted by government, who make huge revenues from mining and the tax dollars they reap from the highly-
paid workers, who can earn up to $120,000 for six months work. The media downplays the extreme dangers associated with mining, LNG production, pipelines, tankers, and trains that transport their poisonous products. Money rules the earth, and industry is well on their way to destroying the planet. This was one of many reasons we stood up against the Prosperity Mine, with the inevitable pollution of the Fish Creek watershed. There should be an impartial, independent inquiry into this disaster by Environment Canada. The extent of this disaster is at this time undetermined, as are the effects upon the surrounding land, waterways, fish and wildlife. Michael Atwood Williams Lake Editor’s note: On Monday, Aug. 18, Minister of Mines Bill Bennett announced there would be an independent inquiry of the incident.
Anti-everything alarmists need to stop Editor: I fail to understand why special interest groups continue to sensationalise the Mount Polley mine incident. Yes, a damn failed and thousands of litres of water and mud knocked out a swath of trees and deposited them into Polley Lake. However, the water was not toxic as many claim and, from my understanding, the mixture contains minimal amounts of naturally occurring minerals, metals, rock, sand, silt and mud. Yes, the site looks horrendous. Roses: Many roses to Mr. Brian Garland. Thank you so much for supporting our fiddling journey Mr. Garland. We had so much fun at the Gavin Lake Fiddle Treat and it would not have been possible without your help with our tuition. Thank you! But it’s not unlike any other naturally occurring mud slide that happens regularly all over B.C. Thankfully no one was hurt or injured, and the water tests continue to confirm that the water in the creeks and lakes is fit for human consumption and perfectly safe for fish. Scientists also continue to confirm that arsenic, mercury and lead levels fall well below the maximum allowable limits for drinking water. Today, people are once again watching fish jump in the lake and can drink the water, and there is
every reason to expect that in a year natural vegetation re-growth will render the incident almost undetectable. Yes, we need to find out why this happened and do what we can to ensure that it does not happen again. But I am not going to let all the “anti-everything” alarmists out there continue to suggest that we shut down an industry so many families rely on. Instead, let’s make it better.

business Barking Spider wheels up to the ‘Y’ Sean Glanville Staff Writer Barking Spider Mountain Bike has moved into their new location just below the Ramada Inn at the ‘Y’ Intersection in the lakecity. Owner Scott Gordon is thrilled with his store’s new digs. “It’s an incredible location being at the busiest intersection in town. “This gives us a lot more exposure and having a more prominent location has allowed us to start our new bicycle rental promotion,” said Gordon. Gordon has had his eye on the property for about five years. The Barking Spider Wednesday night riding group always finish off their ride with some drinks and food at the Overlander Pub owned by Lindsay Gasparini. Gordon admits that his continual hounding of Gasparini to rent them the building finally paid off. “One day Lindsay came by the store and said he’d tossed the idea back and forth and said ‘let’s do it,’” said Gordon. Gasparini left all the renovations up to Gordon and his employees which allowed them to customize the shop exactly to their likings. “We were really able to personalize how we designed the new store. We wanted to focus on using the store as a going to and from point for their rides,” said Gordon. “People can park their cars here, go out on their ride and then come back here, chill out and enjoy a cup of coffee and tell us all about their ride. This place has a real homey feel to it.” Gordon, who just finished a one-week enduro bike race called Single Track Six through the Rocky Mountains in late July noted that between the move and preparing for the race it was really hectic getting the store ready. “It was a bit of a rush to get moved in here between getting the store ready and having

The store has been operating for three weeks now at the new spot and Gordon does plan on organizing some type of grand opening celebration in the next while. One of the additions to the store was a coffee and espresso bar which features local Dancing Goat Coffee. Gordon started Barking Spider in the garage of his home on South Lakeside back in 2000 with partner Scott McCreight. Eventually McCreight moved to Yellowknife, NWT for work and sold his share of the business to Gordon. The business relocated to First Avenue in 2007 below Caribou Ski Source for Sports where they were located prior the new location. “Just being above ground makes a huge difference. We get a lot of sunshine here
and there’s definitely been a huge spike in the tourist side of the business,” said Gordon who credits this to the new location at Highway 97 and Highway
20. “We have a lot of people coming in and asking for maps and discussing trails and how to get to them.” Another luxury of
the new location is that all the mountain biking trailheads in Williams Lake can be accessed about 10 minutes from town — using Barking Spider as their headquarters. “Most towns you have to drive about 20 minutes or more to access the best trailheads where in Williams Lake it’s under 10 minutes,” explained Gordon. Up until last year Gordon worked as a body shop repairman at Lake City Ford but in October he decided to make the store his full-time job. “It was great because body shops are busy in the winter and bike stores are busy in the summer,” said Gordon. Barking Spider is now a year-round operation as they also specialize in many winter sports such as cross country and back country skiing featuring a line of equipment from Rocky Mountain Underground company. Gordon said the men’s Tuesday night road ride group and Wednesday night groups are always looking for new people and he encourages all bicycle enthusiasts to come check out the new store.

Local talent wraps up Performances in the Park The final night for Performances in the Park this Thursday evening features some of the best young performers from Williams Lake, says event organizer Angela Sommer. “Oren Barter and Robyn Ferguson and guests are returning to the stage once again and are sure to entertain,” Sommer says. Sam Tudor will be one of their guests. A songwriter originally from Gavin Lake, Tudor has spent the last two years playing his vaunted folk songs in Vancouver. After a year in Vancouver that was both performance intensive and full of genre bending musical projects, Sommer says Sam is back at home, playing songs from his new al-
bum. Cody’s Bannock, Smashin’ Smoothies, M&M meats and Taylor Made Cakes will be on hand with snacks for everyone during the performances. Arty the Art Walker will be on site as part of the 2014 Art Walk and Sale. There will also be a display for the Sam Ketcham Pool renovations this evening. Kids’ Corner is once again sponsored by the Community Arts Council of Williams Lake and manned by Laura Paterson. COMMUNITY Mountie delivers congratulations Sean Glanville Staff Writer Williams Lake resident Jean Montgomery celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday. Around 70 people crammed in to the Terra Ridge Clubhouse for her centennial birthday. She was graced by the presence of her 93-year-old sister, Helen Macauley of Victoria and her grandson, internationally famous guitar player, Don Alder, who flew up from Vancouver to Williams Lake to share the special event with his grandma. Visiting from Vancouver, Helen’s daughter Marilyn and her husband, John Werenga, and Helen’s grandchildren Jennifer and Joshua Sturgeon also joined the celebration with Joshua’s friend Denise. Alder has a very special relationship with his grandma — who he credits for bringing his family to B.C. Montgomery moved to the area from Manitoba in 1946, to Hydraulic, near Likely, where she met and soon married her late husband, Joe Prior. The couple ran a small hobby farm with many different animals. “My dad passed away when I was young and when I was 11 years old my mother thought it would be good for me to head out to B.C. and spend some time with my grandma,” Alder said. “I reluctantly went and ended up spending the summer at her

Jean Montgomery was thrilled when Williams Lake RCMP Const. Nathan Strohm showed up at her party in red serge to deliver a letter of congratulation on her 100th birthday from Queen Elizabeth II. home in Likely and I had a great time, I loved it so much I made my mom sell her stuff and move out to B.C.” Alder has vivid memories of ice cream and bicycles that summer. “My grandma always has double-chocolate ice cream for me every day and she bought me an 18 speed bicycle and those are what stand out most about that summer,” said Alder. Alder presented Montgomery with congratulatory letters from MLA Donna Barnett, BC Premier Christy Clark, Governor General David Johnston, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and Williams Lake Mayor Kerry Cook. There was a beauti-
ful moment afterwards when Alder serenaded his grandma playing You Are My Sunshine on his guitar while the entire crowd sang along. The moment moved Montgomery to tears. Const. Nathan Strohm, a Mountie with the Williams Lake RCMP, also made a special presentation as he showed up dressed in his red serge and presented Montgomery with a letter from Queen Elizabeth II. Montgomery has always loved seeing Mounties in their red serge and she had a friendly conversation with Const. Strohm. “You look younger than the queen,” someone from the crowd joked as she was presented with her certificate with a portrait of
the queen. Following the presentations the crowd sang happy birthday with the sparklers setting off the clubhouse smoke detectors. Montgomery has a Ukrainian background and was born in Manitoba in 1914 and had one daughter, Joyce Hansen, and grandson, Don. Montgomery also spent time working at the War ammunitions factory in Hamilton, Ontario during the Second World War. She still plays bingo every Saturday. A funny story was told of Montgomery when in 1940 at 26, she and a friend hired a chauffeur from their Winnipeg home to drive them to the Cariboo in a Ford Model A.
You paid how much!?
#ShouldaUsedWilliamsLake
They made it to Banff, Alta. and the driver decided to leave the pair stranded. Luckily for Montgomery the owner of a nearby campsite not only put them up but decided to teach both girls how to drive. Alder, one of the world’s most celebrated fingerstyle guitarists, is also known for his role as childhood friend and fellow Williams Lake native, Rick Hansen’s righthand-man. Alder greased Hansen’s wheelchair wheels on the 40,000-kilometre Man in Motion World Tour from 1985 to 1987, and has since worked with the Rick Hansen Foundation. Alder performed at performances in the park last Thursday night, as well.

NEWS
Paws for a Cause coming up in Williams Lake Some animals never know kindness. The good news is, you can fight animal cruelty in your community by registering and fundraising for the 2014 Scotiabank and BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walk. The event is held each September to raise funds for abused, injured, neglected and homeless animals throughout B.C.
This year, participants in 31 communities throughout the province will walk to raise funds to help animals in need across British Columbia. The Scotiabank and BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walk to fight animal cruelty in Williams Lake will be held at Boitanio Park picnic shelter on Sunday, Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. with the walk
starting at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the walk will benefit animals at the Williams Lake and District SPCA. Participants can enjoy a variety of entertainment and fun activities, including a kid’s gold rock hunt, raffle, SPCA merchandise booth, information booths with your local Special Provincial Constable,
and plenty of food available for dogs and humans. The event brings animal lovers and their furry friends from all walks of life together for a great time as well as a fantastic cause. “This is the largest single event to help fight animal cruelty in British Columbia,” says Krista Constantineau, manager of fundraising events at
the BC SPCA. “We are overwhelmed by the amazing participation each year — it’s so great to see thousands of people come together
across the province to help B.C.’s most vulnerable animals. “Our supporters not only raise essential funds, the events are so much fun for

The opening act for the Thursday, Aug. 14 Performances in the Park concert was a presentation by the combined Cariboo Men’s Choir and Just for Fun ladies’ vocal group. These two local choirs simply love music. They sing because it is good for the heart and the soul, says Angela Sommer who organized the concerts taking place this summer in Boitanio Park on Thursday evenings. The final concerts for the summer will be this Thursday evening starting at 6 p.m. and running through to 8 p.m.
*Notice to public* Sacred Heart Catholic School will not be registering transfer students during the BCTF labour dispute. This is effective September 3rd, 2014 and will last until the dispute is resolved.

About 31 children and youth entered the competition, keeping everyone busy doing their jobs. Nemiah: indelible memories of a bygone rodeo Dan Hicks Special to Tribune/Advisor The Nemiah Valley Rodeo’s unique appeal lay in its isolation — a threeand-a-half hour drive from Williams Lake — its Coast Mountain setting beside Nemiah Creek, rustic log corral and bleachers, and dramatic, unrivaled downhill mountain race. And as the anniversary of what would have been the 37th Nemiah Valley Rodeo approaches, here is my requiem for the event. Spectators could view the rodeo events close up, while perched upon the top corral logs opposite the bleachers; the enraged bulls, having tossed their riders, glaring momentarily at these onlookers; though usually only children and photographers took advantage of this precarious prospect. And there was a social congeniality. Many competitors and spectators camped overnight at the rodeo ground on the BC Day long weekend Saturday night (the rodeo was held Saturday and Sunday). But the Nemiah Valley Rodeo’s race is run, the great event is finished and is unlikely to rise again; the cowboys and cowgirls, along with their horses consigned to Chilcotin history. This would have been the rodeo’s 37th year. I attended in the years 2008, 2010, and 2013, its final year. Last year at Nemiah, disheartening rumors of the rodeo’s inevitable demise and its cause were already circulating. The campers at the rodeo ground had decreased in number, and those that remained were ill served by pounding all night dance music from a dance hall which had previously been situated some distance away. Before there were any intimations of the Nemiah Rodeo’ end, I acquired two unique rodeo souvenirs, oil paintings of a cowgirl child barrel racer at Nemiah which were based on my own photographs. These were painted by amateur Williams Lake artist Grace Wilson in 2010 and 2011. I purchased them from her before she left the area in early 2012.

The first painting was based on a photograph which the Tribune published in August 2010 showing the young rider, who would become the BC Rodeo Association Pee Wee Barrel Racing Champion that year, performing a particularly tight turn with her horse. The painting was dis-

Scott Gordon (left) and Ivor McMahen finished second in the team 100+ combined open category at the Singletrack 6 — a six-day and six-stage mountain bike race throughout the Rocky Mountains.
Duo rides to success at Singletrack 6 Sean Glanville Staff Writer A pair of Williams Lake mountain bikers placed second in the Team 100-plus Open category at the Singletrack 6 event which took place July 26-31. The six day mountain bike race featured six stages throughout various communities in the Rocky Mountains be-
ginning in Canmore and ending in Revelstoke. The duo finished the event in a combined time of 21:02:42 to finish runners up, 32:22 behind the winners. Around 375 men and women from around the globe took part in the world renowned event. “This is definitely a bucket list, feather in your cap type of ride. There were people from
all over the world who come to Canada specifically for this race — we met a woman from Tokyo, Japan who came all the way there specifically for this event,” said Gordon. The event was formerly known as the TransRockies Race which featured a format where cyclists had to ride to checkpoints along the Highway each day so

SPORTS Ride an ‘incredible experience’ Continued From Page A22 “The new format organizers hand picked communities and then planned a loop through each community. Riders then get in their car and drive to the next stage location and book their own hotel,” said Gordon. Riders can purchase a package which includes everything from registration to hotels to transportation but Gordon and McMahen elected to take care of their own lodging and transportation. The race kicked off with stage one, a 40-kilometre trek with an 1,800 meter elevation gain through Bragg Creek near Canmore, Alta. on July 25. After finishing second after the initial stage it changed Gordon and McMahen’s approach to the race. “Ivor and I went in to stage one thinking
we’ll go hard today and see how we are on the leader board. If we’re near the top we’ll keep riding hard and if we’re down lower around fifth or sixth we’ll take it easier and enjoy the scenery more,” said Gordon. The pair found themselves in second place in their category and decided they would go hard the rest of the way. Both Gordon and McMahen’s favourite ride was stage two at Nipika Mountain Resort. “This was our favourite day of the race but it was also the most taxing. It was a lot of single track and it was hell,” said Gordon. Stage three took place at Radium Hot Springs and stages four and five took place near Golden. The race ended in Revelstoke for stage six, and the lakecity pair actually had a chance to overtake
the lead group after they got a flat tire early in the race. “The team that was ahead of us got a flat tire so we passed them on the final stage and we had hopes that if this flat tire really causes things to go sideways for them we might be able to make up the half hour or so we were behind them,” said Gordon. McMahen and Gordon led for much of the final stage but were passed by a Quebec pair that had finished right behind them in third spot the previous five stages. “The last five kilometres in Revelstoke are pavement and the Quebec guys bikes were better suited than ours and they passed us and beat us by only 18 seconds,” said Gordon. Gordon and McMahen were baffled by an unsporting move their French competitors pulled off late in the race. “We were riding
downhill and we’d already told them we were going to concede the stage to them but around this sharp 90 degree corner they blatantly cut us off and forced us to hammer on the brakes and come to a complete stop. “They then took off sprinting for the finish,” said Gordon. “We had been friendly with them the entire race but we asked them what that stunt was all about after the race.” The previous lead group recovered from their flat tire to finish eight minutes behind the leaders, who comfortably won the overall title. “It was an incredible experience and there was some incredible scenery. It was so beautiful there were times you want to stop and take a photo but you can’t because you’re racing,” said Gordon. About five years ago Gordon and Mc-
Provincial clay shoot this weekend The Williams Lake Sportsmen’s Association will host the 2014 B.C. Provincial Sporting Clays Association Provincial Championships this weekend around the grounds at its clubhouse on Bond Lake Road. “This is a game that some people de-
scribe as golf with a shotgun,” said one of the event’s organizers, Barry Jenkins. “You go to one station, there will be six or eight targets that are the same, each person shoots those and then they move on to the next station and it’ll be a totally different angle
and distances.” The clay target shooting event is expected to house around 60 shooters from throughout the province. Preliminary rounds get underway Friday at 10 a.m., with the championships to follow Saturday and Sun-
day — also both beginning at 10 a.m. This will be the second year a provincial clay shoot has been held and the first year the event will be hosted in Williams Lake. For more information or to register contact Judy Jenkins at 250-305-4890.

Mahen competed in a similar multi-day enduro race called the B.C. Gordon now has his sights set on an event in Breckenridge, Colorado called the Breck-Epic which runs every August. “I’d like to one of these types of races once every year or every second year,” said Gordon.

Question of the Week With the exception of Alberta and Quebec, drivers across Canada can be served with an Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) if they blow 0.05 mg/100ml at the roadside. Safety Tip: There are many ways to show courtesy behind the wheel, including allowing space for other drivers to change lanes or manouevre. Driver courtesy is contagious, so wave at the next driver who lets you merge in front of them – they may just pay it forward to another driver.
