Murder suspect arrested in Mexico Cory Vallee accused in gangland hits By Dan Ferguson Police in Mexico have arrested a man charged in the brazen February 2009 daylight shooting in a busy Walnut Grove mall, which killed 26-year-old Kevin LeClair of Abbotsford and the May 9, 2008, shooting death of Jonathan Alex Barber, 23, of Langley who was killed while driving a Porsche Cayenne in Burnaby. The Mexican Attorney General’s Office issued a statement Monday that Cory “Franky” Vallee was arrested on Aug. 14 in the western state of Jalisco. According to the bulletin, after Vallee was arrested for “administrative offenses,” a criminal record search determined that a “Red Notice” had been issued by the Interpol international law enforcement agency, something that is the closest thing to an international arrest warrant and calls on member See GANG / Page 2

Mediator Vince Ready joins teacher talks

By Tom Fletcher Mediator Vince Ready has met the two sides in B.C.’s festering teacher dispute and agreed to “monitor” the situation. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association announced Ready’s involvement in a joint statement last Thursday, confirming that he met separately with negotiators the day before. A media blackout on the talks began last week and will continue. “Mr. Ready agreed to monitor the situation,

and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will be productive,” the statement says. Talks broke off and a full-scale strike ended the school year in June. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher met both sides earlier but declined to attempt mediation, after finding too large a gap between the two sides. Education Minister Peter Fassbender and BCPSEA chief negotiator Peter Cameron have maintained that the BCTF’s benefit demands remain

far beyond those of other public sector unions that have settled contracts. Also at issue is class size and special needs support, with BCPSEA’s latest offer rejected by the union and the latest of a series of court actions scheduled for this fall. Ready’s last involvement in the long-running series of teacher disputes was as an industrial inquiry commissioner in 2007. At that time he recommended that a senior provincial official be involved in talks along with an independent mediator.

Probation for attacking children on bus

Surrey woman sentenced for May 20 incident in Langley By Dan Ferguson A 43-year-old Surrey woman has pleaded guilty to three of four criminal charges laid after a violent confrontation with a mother and her three children aboard a transit bus in Langley on May 20. Leah Susan MacKay appeared in Surrey Provincial court last Wednesday (Aug. 13) afternoon to plead guilty to one count of assault, one count of assault with a weapon and one count of uttering threats. An additional charge of assault with a weapon was stayed by the Crown prosecutor. MacKay has been in jail since the incident, part of which was captured on video posted online. She was sentenced to time served, ordered to pay a $100 victim surcharge and given two years of probation. Langley RCMP said the confrontation occurred when MacKay got into an argument with the the bus driver over nonpayment of her fare and the mother objected to her swearing. It was shortly after 10 a.m. There were several children on the bus in addition to the mother’s own three children. “The woman [MacKay] was using

profane language causing the complainant [the mother] along with other passengers to ask her to stop swearing,” a written RCMP statement said. The police report said MacKay then threatened to kill the mother and her children before throwing a drink at the youngest child, a boy who was less than one year old. The two women got into a brief physical fight, captured on a video later posted to YouTube by another passenger. Both women then exited the bus, MacKay escorted by the driver. The mother began walking toward the Willowbrook Shopping Centre with her children. Police said MacKay ran after the mother and produced a knife, knocked over the complainant’s fouryear-old daughter and kicked her other two-year-old daughter in the back. She was arrested 20 minutes later at her residence after a Surrey RCMP officer recognized the broadcast description as someone he had dealt with in the past. The identity of the mother is protected by a court-ordered ban on publication. The YouTube video of the fight has recorded more than 120,000 views.

‘Roughing it’ in the great outdoors Creature comforts make the trusty tent look less appealing I’ve always considered myself to be an outdoorsy person. I grew up camping every summer, and fished often with my dad and grandpa. I know how to set up a tent, I’ve gutted a fish once or twice, and I know the perfect ratio of chocolate to marshmallow when making s’mores. (The trick? Extra of both.) I was a Cub Scout, dammit. But as I’ve grown older, I fear I’ve become, well, a little soft. A little too accustomed to the comforts of the indoors – where there are TVs and king-sized beds and refrigerators, rather than coolers that require constant refilling with ice. This weakening resolve for the woods is nevermore apparent than during my annual camping trip/softball tournament in the Okanagan. Now, we aren’t exactly “roughing it” on this trip. The campsite is next to the ball field rather than deep in the bush, it’s fully serviced with flush toilets, and a supermarket is no more than five minutes away. Our cellphones still get reception. There’s even free Wi-Fi, for crying out loud.

And as I weighed the pros and cons of starvation versus food poisoning, the door of my friend’s air-conditioned 26-foot trailer swung open, and out he walked with a pizza. A pizza! “Oh, it’s warmer out here than I thought,” he said, as sweat beaded on my ever-furrowing brow just a few feet away. Right there, on the spot, I decided I was buying a trailer in time for next summer. No more sleeping at night with four layers of clothes on, only to tear them off in a sweaty panic at 7 a.m. No more accidentally hitting your thumb – rather than the tent peg – with the hammer. No more eating questionable meat from the bottom of a watery cooler. No, I thought to myself. No more of any of that. Jeez, maybe I really am getting soft.

The summer of 2014 will be remembered as an eventful one for your Chamber of Commerce. After years of delays and broken timelines our frustration boiled over on the Old Safeway Site. The City has owned this property for 30 or so years and during this time the building was neglected and became derelict and the site was contaminated. After years of asking and outright demanding answers from the City and the SCDC it took the front page of the Province and huge coverage from Global TV to get them moving on this project. Take a drive down Hwy 15 from Fraser Hwy to Hwy 10 and the two largest frontages are City owned and are in varying states of disrepair. The people of Cloverdale want more from the City and we intend to make this an election issue this year to ensure that Cloverdale is no longer neglected. The City is holding Cloverdale back with broken promises on the Fairgrounds and the Old Safeway Site and it should not be tolerated any longer. We’ve requested a breakdown of the City’s Capital Spending in Cloverdale and the other town Centers and have been ignored. Enough secrets.......transparency is not just a word that you use when trying to get elected. For more information visit our website: www.cloverdale.bc.ca

OF COMMERCE

Our children are growing up immersed in an online world. As technology constantly advances, it’s important that we also change what we do to keep ourselves and our families safe. The World Wide Web is an incredible resource, opening up new horizons and new opportunities. With a few key strokes we access global markets, vast stores of information and a seemingly endless library of entertainment. The reality of growing up in today’s world is that kids need to know how to be responsible citizens in a digital world. However, many adults who are responsible for raising these young “netizens” struggle to fully understand the scope of the Internet. It’s also very important to teach kids about the concept of personal privacy. We have laws aimed at protecting privacy but in this age of constant sharing it can be difficult for youngsters to know when they’re sharing too much. Chatting online can be dangerous. Kids need to know that they should never give out their real name, address or phone number and that they should never agree to meet someone they only know from chatting with online.

Our children are growing up immersed in an online world. As technology constantly advances, it’s important that we also change what we do to keep ourselves and our families safe. By Rick Kupchuk The Cloverdale Spurs lost twice to Pembina Hills of Manitoba, and settled for the silver medal at the 13U Western Championships in Altona, Manitoba. Cloverdale won three of their first four games to advance to the gold medal game, and took a 3-2 lead into the fourth inning. Pembina Hills scored seven times over the final four innings for the victory. Rhys Folick hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give Cloverdale a 2-1 lead. The Spurs scored in each of the first five innings to take an 8-0 lead into the final two frames. Jonathon McGill was three-for-three with a double and three RBIs. The Spurs fell 4-3 to Pembina Hills of Manitoba in the final game of group play Friday evening. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Cloverdale went up 3-2 after McGill scored from third on a wild pitch and

Knight singled to score Noah Dube. Pembina Hills scored twice in the top of the seventh for the win. Snow was the top batter for the Spurs with two hits, including a double and an RBI. The Spurs faced North Winnipeg, the runner-up team from the other group, in Saturday’s semifinal and had little trouble in a 12-4 win. Folick collected six RBIs on three hits for Cloverdale, including three on a firstinning home run. He added a two-run single in the second. Dube had a pair of doubles and two RBIs.

Storm earn bronze in Brampton By Rick Kupchuk Losing just once in eight games, Surrey Storm ‘98 earned the bronze medal at the U16 Girls Fast Pitch Canadian Championship in Brampton, Ontario. The Storm topped Smitty’s ‘98 of Manitoba by a 6-2 score this morning (Sunday) to clinch third place at the 20-team competition. Jessica Fasolino pitched all seven innings for Surrey, striking out eight Manitoba batters while allowing one earned run on four hits and a walk. Demi Rose, batting in the designated hitter’s role, had a double and a single to drive in a pair of runs. Hailey Kjaer hit a two-run double and finished the game with three RBIs while Brooke Derkson had a pair of singles to drive in one run and score twice. Storm ‘98 cruised through pool play at the

A double from Ben McCartney scored Trent Peters for the final Spurs run of the game, which cut the difference to 6-4 after five innings. Cloverdale went 2-1 (wonlost) to finish atop their fourteam group in the round robin. Cloverdale’s first game of the tournament was a 15-10 victory over Calgary on Thursday evening, with Liam Knight of the Spurs going four-for-five at the plate with a double, three runs batted in (RBI)s and two runs

five-day tournament, topping their five-team group with four wins in as many games. In a four-team group in the playoff round, the Storm were upset 3-2 by the Quebec Rebelles ‘98 on Friday morning. The Rebelles scored a pair of unearned runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Surrey managed just four hits, but made the most of them. Rose singled in the top of the sixth inning, and scored on a base hit from Emily Manhao. In the seventh and down to their final three outs, Hailey Kjaer hit a lead-off triple and scored on a wild pitch. The next three batters were retired, leaving the Rebelles with a one-run victory. Surrey then topped the Oakville Angels of Ontario 7-5, as a five-run fourth inning erased a 4-1 Oakville advantage. Manhao had the big

Derkson would cross the plate for the winning run on Kjaer’s single. The Storm broke the hearts of the host Brampton Blazers with a 4-3 win. The Blazers led 3-0 after batting in the top of the sixth inning, despite Fasolino throwing a completegame three-hitter that included eight strikeouts. A pair of Blazers errors allowed Manhao and Derkson to score from third base in the bottom of the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Emily Chordita singled to start the rally. Marina Cyr doubled to put two runners in scoring position, and both scored when Rose reached first base on an error.
