Salmo’s affordable housing nears completion Sheri Regnier

With the walls up and a roof on Salmo’s affordable housing complex, it’s time to get to the nitty gritty of who is going to live there. After 25-years of community fundraising, a significant influx of cash from Columbia Basin Trust and partnerships with BC

Housing and the BC Non-Profit Housing Association, the units should be ready for renters by Oct. 1. The structure of eight townhouses and 20 seniors units already has more than 100 applications from interested parties, but the decision who moves in this fall, is still in the works. Recently, the Salmo and Area Housing Society hired a consultant to

are (currently) living.” He maintains that although 130 seniors, not all from the village, have applied for a room in one of the 20 seniors units, Salmo’s elderly will most likely be given preference. Another detail yet to be finalized is how much the units will cost renters each month but the rates will be affordable, not low cost. “There’s a difference between the two,” he explained. “A lot of people think they are low cost and for people wanting to move here from Vancouver, they are. But low cost is $300 a month. And we don’t have exact rates yet, but depending on the unit, the rent could be between $800 and $1,000 each month.” Berukoff maintains that support from the village and Salmo community has been instrumental in completing the project and for the most part, the building’s construction has gone off without a hitch. “It’s been really interesting and after 26 years, it’s finally here,” he said, adding that deciding who will renting, “is going to be a tough decision.”

Sculpture Talk Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.

Ron Simmer

What the Nose Knows (recycled aluminum and steel, fibreglass, reflective polycarbonate) It is fitting Ron Simmer is presenting this work at his initial Scupturewalk showing. The Burnaby-based artist has a nose for finding castoff materials from consumer society, and refiguring them into iconic works of art. There is an undertone of subversiveness in some of his work, but just as often there is humour. Always there is inventiveness and creativity. That undercurrent of rebellion is apparent in his artist’s statement accompanying What the Nose Knows. He decries the “nosiness” of government and corporations for their relentless accumulation of data, and their reluctance to provide

it freely to the individuals whose information it is. In light of the intrusive actions of spy agencies like the NSA and CSEC in their collection of metadata using highly questionable methods and rationale in doing so, it is a prescient comment. The sculpture itself is simplistic, appealing and oversized. A large fibreglass nose sits between red-rimmed frames encasing two reflective polycarbonate circles. The viewer sees themselves and the surrounding view as they study the enormity of it and ponder the message. Simmer has an impressive collection of sculptures created almost exclusively from discarded materials. Brightly coloured dogs (some urinating; again that undercurrent of subversiveness) are fashioned from gas cylinders, roadrunners are created from bicycle gears, propane tanks, old rakes, metal hose and colourful reclaimed steel pieces. He combines oddities like the blade of a lawnmower with a child’s trike, or a shovel blade with wheels and old garden shears to create fanciful, intriguing works. Always, they are stylish, sleek and in some cases, somewhat menacing (Attack Bug, Devil Pig, Shovel Bird). “In some ways, my sculptures are a commentary on modern society, not only

its inherent wastefulness but also the frightening direction it is taking. Counteracting that, I attempt to take people back to their childhood by creating large scale ‘toys’ and colourful birds and animals. I have been influenced over the years by the pop art movement, starting with Joan Miro, the influential Spanish surrealist painter and sculptor.” Some of Simmer’s art is created to be an interactive physical experience and often incorporates optical illusions, as is evidenced by What the Nose Knows and other works like Infinite Mirror and Giant Cyborg Eyeball. He is a member of the executive board of ReVision, the collective of Vancouver-area artists devoted to creating art from recycled materials. He has worked with fellow ReVision artists on a number of collaborative exhibitions and projects, two of which ultimately were part of the Burning Man festival in Nevada. “Breaking Wave was a two ton collection of driftwood and ocean detritus (nearly 2000 pieces) modeled after and inspired by the classic Great Wave of Kanagawa by Japanese painter Hokusai. We re-constructed it on the playa at the festival, rigged it with lights and after three days we burned it,” says Simmer with great satisfaction. “The project was a memorial to the victims of the deadly tsunami that struck northern Japan in 2012. Now it is part of Burning Man history.” Creative and multi-faceted, Simmer self-identifies as a ‘burner’ and figures he’ll spearhead another project for the festival before too long. “As an artist you can’t ever get complacent, and I certainly don’t intend to.”

Serge Mozhnevsky

The Kiss (aluminum)

Sensuous and strong, Serge Mozhnevsky’s The Kiss continues in the vein of works he has shown here over the past few years. It is large, austere, aluminum lushly opalescent, and brimming with interpretation/ meaning. As always, Mozhnevsky’s sculpture this year is composed of beautiful, deceptively simple lines and angles. Taken as a whole they speak to the viewer, affording them the opportunity to see what they interpret the work to say. The Kiss, as with all Mozhnevsky’s works, is open to determination, although the title hints at what he had in mind. “This sculpture is dedicated to all loving hearts separated by law,” says its creator.

Ten feet across and five feet high, the sculpture is composed of two opposite pieces fusing together in the centre. The outer sides angle up distinctly, creating sharply defined space and then progress in a sensual curve. At the top of each curved end, meeting in the middle, are perpendicular pieces at slightly different angles. The symmetry is disrupted, deliberately so, at the heart of The Kiss. So, what does the viewer see and construe in The Kiss? Is it two conjoined bodies, or mouths? Are the perpendicular top pieces symbolizing two arms or tongues, or sets of lips, one bent to the other? Regardless of how one interprets it, Mozhnevsky’s work is powerful, attractive and passionate. The composition of the different lines – moving gracefully from angle to curve – and the relative symmetry of the work as a whole results in an appreciation of The Kiss from every viewpoint. It is cohesive, uncluttered and stark; at the same time it is enigmatic, dense and imaginative. Mozhnevsky works primarily in aluminum for his public pieces. This particular sculpture comes to Castlegar Sculpturewalk from the Peace Arch Park in Blaine, Washington on the Canada-United States border, a location where he has displayed a number of other works in the past. For the Coquitlam-based

Mozhnevsky, it is a natural spot to display his arresting aluminum works, for the proximity as well as the space. “Because I tend to work in aluminum on the larger sculptures, they show best in a natural setting like the Peace Arch Park, or any outdoor setting. Surrounded by nature and exposed to the elements is how I think they are best appreciated.” The contrast between the sheen of the aluminum and the greenery is always striking, as is the sun or moon reflecting off one of his artfully composed sculptures. This was nicely achieved when he displayed Observation here in 2011. The placement on the lawn in front of the RCMP office exhibited the relatively horizontal sculpture marvellously. Mozhnevsky studied fine woodworking in the Ukraine before emigrating to Canada in 2000 and is hugely talented working in that medium also. His works in wood tend to be smaller, but always they display the same fluid, curving lines and brilliant use of space that his aluminum sculptures do. “For me, the most important thing in any work I do is to capture a sense of fullness and completeness using lines sparingly,” he says. “Curves, angles and juxtapositions of them create spaces that are as important. “Collectively, they ultimately impart what I am feeling, but I consciously don’t attempt to impose my vision or interpretation. That is left to those who view my work. We could be diametrically opposed in what we see. Genelle or China Creek? One place, two names Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Sixty-seventh in a roughly alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Genelle and China Creek are essentially the same place, although China Creek is the older name. The earliest reference is in the Victoria Daily Colonist of August 30, 1896, quoting the Spokane Spokesman Review of a few days earlier: “Advices received at Rossland from the outlying districts of Murphy, Sullivan, and China creeks are that numerous prospects upon which development work is being done are showing up wonderfully well.” George Melvin wrote in The Post Offices of British Columbia that the name was “after the Chinese who gold panned there.” The Rossland Museum’s website suggests Chinese labourers on the Dewdney Trail had a camp at the creek’s mouth in the 1860s. It’s one of six China Creeks in BC, and according to the BC Geographical Names database, to avoid confusion with the others, surveyor W.S. Drewry renamed it Popoure Creek after railway contractor James Poupore. It appeared that way on a 1915 map, but residents continued to call it China Creek. (In 1974, the

Genelle Improvement District was allowed to divert water from what the government called Poupore Creek, although the name is not officially recognized today. Poupore is also the name of a railway siding that we’ll get to later in this series.) China Creek was a polling station for the federal election of 1904, but only one ballot was cast. It might have belonged to James Fielding (1840-1913), listed on the 1898 BC voters list as a farmer at China Creek.

Clara Graham wrote in Kootenay Yesterdays that in the early 20th century, “Each summer we had a picnic, generally at Fielding’s Landing, at the mouth of China Creek.” The China Creek post office opened in 1906 and operated until 1909. A directory listing the following year reveals the China Creek Lumber Co. had established a sawmill there. The same directory contained the notation “Genelle – See China Creek.” The Canadian Pa-

cific Railway had by this time named its siding after the Genelle family (sometime spelled Janelle or Jenelle), who came to BC from Thessalon, Ont. in 1884. They operated sawmills at Nakusp, Wesley, and throughout the Boundary, and supplied railway ties. Brothers Peter (18561939), Joseph (18571913), and John (18661904) were all actively involved in the business. Why this point was chosen to honour them is unclear; the

Encyclopedia of British Columbia claims Peter Genelle established a sawmill there to supply lumber to the Trail smelter, but there isn’t much evidence of this. The development of Genelle as a com-

munity is similarly murky. The first death recorded there was in May 1910, but the second wasn’t until 1959. Genelle was on the CPR timetable as of 1913, but by 1918 the civic directory noted

it had “few local residents.” The China Creek post office reopened in 1946 and was renamed Genelle in 1974. The two names, however, are still used interchangeably.

Ian Harwood Ian Harwood has been involved in the light truck industry for the past 30 years. His career started with the opening of a small 4-wheel drive shop in the early 80s. There was a time when Highlander looked like an SUV, with an angular two-box design. Allow about 1.5 hours of leisurely drive time in each direction. You’ll also need a ($5) day pass to park, which you get from automated dispensers at the Glacier Public Service Center or at Heather Meadows near the skiing area. The Hybrid Synergy Drive system in Highlander uses a 3.5L Atkinson Cycle V6 gas engine, a high torque electric motor-generator and powerful traction battery. Nooksack Falls is just a short (and groomed) gravel road off the highway about 11 km (7 ml) east of Glacier, which is the last community along the highway. You do have to scramble over some (slippery when wet) rocks to get to a good (and safe) fenced viewing area. The water takes a spectacular 30 m (100 ft) plunge, so a close-up view is definitely worth the extra effort. Interesting Eating Places: Anthony’s is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner in Bellingham. Situated in the harbour area it overlooks the marina and has views of the San Juan Islands. Great service, great fare (especially the seafood), all tables come with a view and the prices are very reasonable, compared to Vancouver. Pizzeria, Beer Shrine and Wedding Chapel is an out of the ordinary and rewarding halfway (going or returning) restaurant stop on the Mount Baker Highway that’s known locally as “The Shrine”. Diesel vehicles increasing in demand

Today’s diesel vehicles have been redesigned and reimagined, making them a growing commodity for buyers. While diesel cars and trucks were once the relative outcasts of the automotive consumer market, diesel passenger vehicles are now the center of newfound demand. One of the main draws of diesel cars and trucks is their fuel economy. Consumers focused on saving money and protecting the planet concurrently often find that diesel vehicles are more fuel efficient than vehicles that run on regular unleaded gasoline. Although diesel costs more at the pump than other fuels, drivers who fuel up with diesel gasoline can save around 30 percent through improved fuel efficiency over regular gasoline. That can add up to considerable savings over time. According to Rushlane, demand for diesel vehicles in the United States was just 3 percent in 2011.

Diesel vehicles are equipped to use more of the energy content of the fuel to produce output than vehicles that run on regular unleaded gasoline. It takes less fuel to provide the same power as standard gasoline. In the past, diesel cars were associated with black, sooty exhaust and clanking engines. However, today’s modern diesel cars are quiet and burn fuel more cleanly due to new technology. New, clean diesel fuel is the only diesel fuel being sold in the United States.
