Interest shown in industrial lands Solid offers in on former Albion ferry site By Phi l M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgemnews.com

After years of the doldrums and disinterest, some pieces of Maple Ridge’s industrial inventory are being picked up and the district’s dream of growing its tax base is starting to unfold. After languishing unused for years, the former Albion ferry terminal at 23850 River Rd. is now drawing interest, said realtor Bill Hobbs. The property has been vacant and surrounded by chain link fence since 2009, when TransLink cancelled the Albion ferry and opened the Golden Ears Bridge. TransLink has been trying to sell it since, despite pleas from the District of Maple Ridge to maintain the property for public riverfront access.

Getting back on his feet Organ failure paralyzed Geoff Dunsire By Nei l Corbe tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

G

eoff Dunsire will have a long, hard road to recovery to walk again, but he finally has hope after a medical ordeal that has lasted most of an agonizing year. When he was 13, Geoff contracted an incurable liver disease from a standard hepatitis B vaccine. He has had to take immune suppressants since. It took a year in and out of Children’s Hospital, but he became a healthy boy, and then a young man determined to wring the pleasure out every moment of his life, whether skiing black diamond runs, climbing The Chief, playing hockey, or bucking guys off the mechanical bull at Roosters, where he ran the controls. He plays guitar, piano and the sax. The 26-year-old enjoyed a bit of a beer-commercial lifestyle, but with his liver disease, always avoided drinking and drugs. Last August, he suffered flu-type symptoms and a high temperature. When he became yellow and jaundiced-looking, his roommate took him to Royal Columbian Hospital. He was then transferred to Vancouver General Hospital, in end-stage liver failure. Then came an avalanche of health problems. Within days, Geoff suffered complete liver failure, then kidney failure. He was on 24-hour dialysis, and put on a waiting list for a liver transplant. The toxins in his body were affecting his brain. Dunsire didn’t know where he was, or what was going on. “It wasn’t him anymore,” said his mother Tracey, who has been at his side throughout. “He was confused and short tempered.” Geoff fell into a coma, and was on life support. On Sept. 20, 2013, Geoff received his liver transplant. “He rocked it,” said Tracey. “If he didn’t have any of these other issues, he would have been home living his normal life.” An infection in his blood attacked his heart and brain before it could be

cleared. He got an infection behind his eyes, and “came within a millimetre of going blind.” His parents and sisters came to see him daily. “I didn’t hear his voice for four months,” said Tracey. Three times, the family was told to

gather to see Geoff one last time. But they didn’t lose hope. “We never for one minute believed he wasn’t going to pull through this,” said Tracey. The last big blow to Geoff was ICU-induced polyneuropathy and myopathy – muscle weakness and neurological dysfunction, which can

Contributed

develop in patients in intensive care. It left him paralyzed from the neck down and confused. He shrunk from a fit 195 pounds to 125 pounds. “My mother said he looked like a Holocaust survivor,” said Tracey. He was getting physiotherapy at G.F. Strong at UBC, and a frustrating time followed for the family. Geoff was suffering back pain, and given everything from methadone to oxycodone to cope with it. Busy hospital staff would miss his anti-rejection medication. He would get transferred to VGH for dialysis, and sometimes staff would forget to send his meds. “Things like that happened on a regular basis,” said Tracey. “If Geoff didn’t have us as advocates every day, I truly believe he wouldn’t be alive today.” Although she emphasized much of the help her son received at G.F. Strong was incredibly beneficial, she could not deny that Dunsire was starting to live the life of a “drug addict,” and his rehab was not progressing. Finally, the family noticed that

some of the pain in his back was associated with his dialysis. The staff doing dialysis had not been informed that Jeff was urinating normally, and had been taking too much fluid from him. His chart was changed, and that night Jeff was sitting up in bed texting on his cell phone, nearly pain free. Finally, he stabilized. He went with family to Grouse Mountain and the Richmond Night Market. They took him to movies – anything to get him out doing normal things. “He’s like our old Geoff. The fog has started to lift. He’s got a sense of humour. He’s smiling and laughing for the first time in 11 months. It’s Geoff back.” G.F. Strong was ready to send him home, with minimal progress in his rehab. The family dug in their heels, saying his condition hadn’t allowed him to do proper rehabilitation. He hadn’t been able to move without pain. A television news team heard the story, and came and did a feature about his plight. Geoff was recently transferred from Vancouver Coastal Health to Fraser Health, and his recovery has shifted into overdrive at the Yale Road Centre in Surrey. He sees a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist, and has a room to himself. He likes the staff, which is comprised of many young men his own age, who relate to him. He’s getting dialysis at Surrey Memorial, and there is some optimism there that his kidneys are recovering. “We’ve been set back so many times ... but this seems really great,” said Tracey. One day he will be sent home, and it will still be in a wheelchair. He needs ramps, a hospital bed and other home renos and changes to make his home livable. He will eventually need a wheelchair accessible vehicle. Now his struggle is financial. Geoff had no income for the first seven months of this year, and now qualifies for $95 per month. Bills have piled up. The Happy Liver Society has arranged a fundraiser, and the goal is $25,000. Online donations can be made at the site youcaring.com, under the title Help Geoff Get Back on His Feet. So far it has garnered $2,500. A fundraiser for Geoff will be held at the Haney Hotel on Sept. 14, with raffle prizes and a silent auction from 4-8 p.m. with live entertainment. Geoff will be there, and it will be his first visit back to Maple Ridge since his ordeal began a year ago. “Geoff ’s going to walk again,” said Tracey. “He’s getting stronger every day. He just needs help to get there.”

“We’ve got a number of good offers in play,” Hobbs said Thursday. The 2.5-acre parcel is listed for $2.5 million. Also in the Albion Industrial Area, a Maple Ridge company that needs to expand is looking at three parcels that comprise 10 acres. At the same time, the Kanaka Business Park, which long sat empty in the industrial zone at the north end of 256th Street, is now 53 per cent sold. Lot prices have jumped

from below $300,000 at the beginning of the year to $425,000. “We’ve raised prices six times throughout the past seven-month period,” Hobbs said. “But it’s still the most affordable land in Metro Vancouver. It’s cheaper than going out to Chilliwack.” One of the largest deals recently signed in Kanaka Business Park is with Ardex, a German floor and building supply company that will be building a 70,000 sq. foot plant on

seven acres. After years of stumbling recovery from the 2008 recession, Hobbs said the economy is starting to move and with that the demand for land. “We’re starting to see land move that we haven’t seen before.” In the Maple Meadows Business Park, “right now you can’t buy a lot within the park because everything’s been sold.” The Albion Industrial Area is now seeing other businesses join the traditional wood-based ones

there. But he said that land has to be protected to provide a base for industry and jobs and disagrees with rezoning of the area. “I would strongly discourage that because already in Metro Vancouver you have a dramatic shortage of serviced, industrial acreage.” Instead, more industrial land needs to be on the market. “People shouldn’t be commuting out of Maple Ridge. They should be having the employment and tax base located within the borders. We need a strong council and governance that will support keeping business within the confines,” of municipal boundaries. Commercial and office space realtor Adrian Keenan, however, hasn’t noticed much change in the demand for store and business space. “It’s not what it could be,” he said. Many businesses are having a tough time and are just hanging on, he added. Still, the district’s incentive programs to spur residential and commercial building in the downtown have been a good thing, he said. Keenan favours maintaining the industrial use of the Albion Industrial Area. He pointed out that land prices still aren’t high enough to justify tearing down ramshackle buildings and replacing them with new structures. The District of Maple Ridge is in the process of finalizing its commercialindustrial strategy, to identify future areas for industrial use. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin wants to listen to property owners in the Albion area about their plans. If the owners wanted a marina, as proposed in some concepts, he wouldn’t want to force a particular use. However, right now the district’s thought is that Albion Industrial Area is “employment-or business park.” Staff have told council that allowing residential development in the Albion Industrial Area would polarize the downtown. In the meantime, a proposal to put a major condo development near Port Haney Wharf, outside the Albion Industrial Area, is about to go back to council.

Private school interest spikes Local independent schools getting more calls from parents B y M oni s ha M ar tin s mmartins@mapleridgenews.com

Private schools in Maple Ridge are fielding more calls from parents as a labour dispute between public school teachers and the province drags on. The Federation of Independent Schools reports a marked increase in inquiries, a trend the organization has seen during previous job action. “I know that the applications to some of the religious schools have gone up substantially,” said Hugh Burke, the headmaster of Meadowridge School in Maple Ridge. The university preparatory school on 240th

Street has seen an increase in calls, as well, but no spike in enrolment. Burke said that’s because Meadowridge tends to attract people looking for a specific kind of education, not those running away from another school system. “If people wanted to come to an independent school like ours, they should be coming because they want to attend our school,” he added. “We still think that the public schools are very good schools. The current relationship between the teachers and the bargaining unit will pass. The fact is, B.C. schools are consistently among

the best in the world. We want to make sure people understand that when they apply here.” There are 367 independent schools in B.C.. The Federation of Independent Schools represents 292 of them. Students in religious schools make up the largest portion of independent school enrolment. St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Maple Ridge has seen an increase in interest since public school teachers began their strike. “I don’t want to say it’s directly related to the strike, but when the public system goes on job action, we often have an increased enrolment,” said principal Clive Heah. He estimates St. Pat’s, which can accommodate a maximum of 230 stu-

dents, fielded between six or seven inquiries over summer from parents with children in public schools. Staff at both Meadowridge and St. Pat’s are busy preparing for the new school year this week. Meadowridge graduated its first class of International Baccalaureate students this year and reports the class of 2014 achieved a 100 per cent pass rate, compared to the world average of 80 per cent. Of the 42 graduates in 2014, 32 wrote the IB exam. “We are pretty happy with how the kids did. It means a lot of the students completed the first year of university while at Meadowridge,” said Burke.

‘Honour media blackout, minister’ School from front

The strike followed several weeks of rotating walkouts and other job action. Talks between the B.C. Teacher’s Federations and B.C. Public School Employers’ Association have continued under a media blackout since mediator Vince Ready met the two sides last week. On Thursday, however, Education Minister Peter Fassbender spoke to media, saying he respects the blackout as it relates to bargaining, but has a responsibility to advise parents about the options available to them if the strike continues. He referred parents to bcparentinfo.ca, a taxpayer funded website launched Monday to update parents on bargaining and provide them with learning resources. The B.C. government has also offered parents and guardians of students under the age of 13 years $40 a day if the strike is not over by the start of classes in September. The BCTF called Fassbender’s media tour “a clear contravention” of the media blackout that was agreed to when Ready first engaged in the bargaining process. “It is unhelpful that the minister is again playing politics in the media instead of allowing bargaining to resume behind closed doors,” said BCTF president Jim Iker. The union called on

Fassbender to honour the media blackout and instruct the public school employers’ association to immediately begin intensive mediation with the

assistance of Ready. The province and public school employers’ association have maintained that the BCTF’s benefit demands remain

far beyond those of other public sector unions that have settled contracts. Also at issue is class size and special needs support.

Welcome back On Wednesday, the principal at Pitt Meadows secondary posted a message on the school’s website, welcoming back students and parents. The site also lists the first day of classes as Sept. 2. The PMSS office opens for registration on Monday. While principal Mike Keenan acknowledges that the first day of school is not official, he explains that administrative and clerical staff have prepared timetables for students, and that those who did not receive report cards in June have been programmed in to the next grade level. Keenan outright expects the dispute between teachers and the B.C. government to be settled soon. He is excited to return to school and reports that the building has been polished from top to bottom, giving kudos to the custodial crew. Additional furniture and other niceties have been also been added for students’ enjoyment, and more is to come. It all sounds so pleasant, unlike the relationship between the BCTF and Liberal government. The two sides did meet last week, and mediator Vince Ready is monitoring the talks for signs of compromise so he can get more involved. In the meantime, both sides agreed not to engage in public discussion. But then Education Minister Peter Fassbender went on the radio Thursday and started talking about his grandchildren and blaming the BCTF. Members of the teachers union are meeting in Kamloops today to discuss their plans for September, whether they’ll return to classrooms and continue extra activities, such as coaching school sports. We hope the best deal for teachers and students is reached, that Mr. Keenan isn’t jumping the gun on getting school started, and that students have all their supplies. – The News

Policing costs are out of control M any RCMP officers quietly express the opinion that changes in the legal system and changing social expectations have turned our local detachment into little more than a collection of social workers and secretaries with guns. And it’s all at a huge Sidewinder cost to local taxpayers. Sandy Macdougall When the cost of civilian support staff is added to the annual police budget, Maple Ridge is currently spending in excess of $20 million per year to preserve law and order. We also have a municipal bylaw enforcement department, which is not included in the overall police budget. Longstanding jokes about the number of Mounties observed patronizing local donut and coffee shops have grown stale and unfunny when you stop to consider the increased demands placed on police in our communities. The local detachment strength currently stands at approximately 90 members and is probably understaffed by at least six members. Even without adding new members to bring the unit up to recommended levels, the annual budget will continue to escalate by more than four per cent every year for at least the next several years.

Q

uestion of the week:

Much of the exploding costs can be laid at the feet of the federal and provincial governments, which recently imposed the current contract on municipalities employing the RCMP. The burden of pensions and other costs which have little to do with placing manpower on the streets has been downloaded onto the backs of local taxpayers while senior levels of government claim they are reducing costs. The costs continue to grow and there still remains only one level of society that can’t pass the bills onto anyone else and that is taxpayers. While senior government officials claim so-called cost reductions, there has been no actual bottom line reduction in costs and taxpayers get stuck with ever-increasing bills for the same services. The increase in paperwork requirements and court appearances during trials has reduced the number of officers available for patrols and other police work and has reduced the visibility of police on our streets. What this means is that, while the detachment strength is greater than it was a decade ago, the effective number of RCMP on the ground at any given time has been reduced. The recent appearance of foot patrols in the downtown area is a result of sharing between the downtown business community and the local detachment, but it comes at the cost of paying some regular RCMP

Do you prefer to leave home while on vacation? Yes: 67% – No: 33%

members overtime. There is a recurrent call by the public to increase traffic patrols, but, once again, the deployment of RCMP to do this work is very expensive. And it could be carried out more effectively and cheaper with a municipal traffic enforcement department. The business community picks up the lion’s share of costs for the private security firm involved in the foot patrols, while the rest of us pick up the overtime costs for the regular RCMP members. The creation of integrated regional police services such as the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) and forensic services has been very effective at solving serious crimes, but also comes at a huge local cost which will exceed $2.5 million for this fiscal year. Pension liabilities and the local share of the regional RCMP command structure will also create an ongoing huge percentage increase in costs to local taxpayers for the foreseeable future, and there is not much that can be done about it due to the RCMP contract foisted on local taxpayers by the provincial and federal governments. While the RCMP continues to set a high standard for effective law enforcement, how much longer can taxpayers afford these services, and would we be more economically served by municipal or provincial police? Sandy Macdougall is a retired journalist and former district councillor.

I was elected in a November by-election in Chilliwack. I’ve found that you are correct about long time trustees. I’ve visited picket lines and refused to cross one outside a board meeting. I have also written a letter to the paper in favour of concessions by the government on class sizes. To be fair, I do have an ally on the board when it comes to picket lines and funding. • Jack Emberly · University of British Columbia: Your transparency is refreshing. • Pat Furness: Excellent article, Jack. Now I will probably be shunned (I am kidding). I see more trustees supposedly stepping up. They are late to the party. It must be an election year. Last week our district decided to give the teachers their advance pay. I was not allowed to vote because my daughter is a teacher. • Karen Goreas · University of Grenoble, France: I would love to know what trustees are so afraid of. Haven’t they been elected to promote public education? • Nel Joostema · retired: Great article, Jack. In my time on the board, I was always (or most if the time) fighting Victoria in a honest approach to protect the programs we often fought hard for to get in the first place. Keep up the good work.

Editor, The News: Re: Downtrodden (Letters, Aug. 20). I cannot believe the hate people in our community can have for their fellow man. I have one suggestion for all the haters of the Caring Place: go volunteer to serve a meal there before you expose your holier-than-thou attitudes toward those in our society who need assistance. I have served dinner there. I am always amazed by the number of families with young children who access the meals, the elders who partake in lunch and or dinner because their pensions do not cover shelter and food, and those disabled who are in the same boat. Even the “homeless drug addicts” are polite and personable when treated

with dignity. The Caring Place does more than feed the addicts. It provides them with a path to recovery when they are ready for it. It provides access to basic health care via services of a nurse practitioner. It provides a place where they can find some dignity, receive kindness and, most importantly, be met with a smile instead of fear and loathing. We are all human. Do not judge others – you do not know the struggles of their past. Be thankful for your health, home and loved ones. Search for ways to eliminate addiction and homelessness. That is how to fix the problem. Mavis Nordstrom Maple Ridge

illions of sockeye salmon are now in the Fraser River, but that doesn’t mean a fishing frenzy in what’s supposed to be a bountiful year. “There are thousands of fish going by our community right now, but we’re not allowed to catch any of them,” said Rick Bailey, councillor with Katzie First Nation. Concerns about the strength of the early summer sockeye run that are still in the river have Fisheries and Oceans Canada cautious about allowing a catch that could threaten future early summer runs. “We basically can’t fish until they’re gone,” Bailey added. But once tests show that the early summer run has passed, there could be another economic opportunity fishery for the band. Economic opportunity fisheries allow First Nations to catch fish for commercial purposes. So far this summer, there’s been only one such opportunity for Katzie, Kwantlen and Matsqui First Nations, in which the combined catch was 10,000 sockeye salmon. As for the food, social and ceremonial fishery, they have caught their our, said Bailey. That means the 50 or so Katzie First Nation fishing boats are waiting to hear from fisheries about dates for another economic opportunity fishery. Notice could come Friday. Bailey said it’s a good year for the sockeye fishery, “in the sense there’s lots of fish coming in.”

Mike Armstrong and Glenn Budden haul in salmon during a commercial fisheries opening Tuesday. Earlier estimates predicted a massive run of 70 million. But that number’s been scaled back. Still, the numbers have been encouraging. According to Fisheries, the early Stuart run is estimated at 233,000; the early summer run is estimated at 2.2 million; and the summer run is estimated at 6.3 million sockeye. Numbers from the late summer run, the largest portion of the Fraser River sockeye, are still not in. Bailey, though, has been told by fisheries that there is a body of fish from Haida Gwaii to the Georgia Strait. Those are now in Johnstone Strait. “There’s a pile of fish coming.” The flow of the Fraser River is 17 per cent lower than average for this time of year, while the water temperature is three degrees higher than average. “Sustained high water temperatures can cause severe stress to migrating sockeye and may lead to significant en route mortality,” fisheries said. Phil Eidsvik was one of the com-

mercial fishermen on the Fraser River, just off the Port Hammond dock in Maple Ridge for an eighthour opening Tuesday. The average haul for each boat was about 600 sockeye for the day. “We’re expecting maybe four more days,” he said. “This is the first time we fished for sockeye since 2010.” Eidsvik, with the Area E Gillnetters Association, estimated the value of this year’s sockeye run on the B.C. coast at $400 million. Eidsvik said only about 10 per cent of the catch is sold off the docks, such as at either Port Haney or Kanaka Landing. Instead, the catch is unloaded on to packing boats for processing and export, which accounts for about 80 per cent of the catch. “Most of our fish will go into export markets.” With two commercial openings so far and a few more expected before the end of the season, there now will be fresh sockeye for markets in Canada and the U.S.

One option for toll bridges Port Mann, GEB bill together By S tep h Trou g h ton newsroom@mapleridgenews.com

Drivers crossing the Golden Ears and Port Mann bridges will soon have only one bill to worry about. Beginning Sept. 1, the one-billing system issued by TReO will be put into place. Those who use the system will be able to identify billed trips easily because each trip will be identified by which bridge was crossed and when, explained Greg Johnson, Transportation Investment Corporation community and media relations manager. He also said, since the Port Mann bridge toll was established in Dec. 2012, a plan was in the works to simplify the billing process. “The plan was always to have the two [billing] systems work together.” Drivers who do not register with TReO and maintain their QuickPass Golden Ears account can continue to pay this account separately. If they choose this option, the only way to get the lowest Golden Ears toll rate, which is currently at $3.05 for passenger cars, is to keep their transponders. Currently those crossing in passenger cars without transponders pay $3.60. Registered TReO users get a free plastic decal that works for both bridges and guarantees them the lowest rate, which for a passenger car crossing the Port Mann Bridge is $3. As each bridge is managed by different authorities, they will both continue to have different toll rates, vehicle classifications and promotions. Although traffic growth for the Golden Ears bridge has been reported in the past as being too low to hit TransLink’s targets, TransLink’s 2014 base plan indicates it started to increase this year by approximately three per cent. The expectation is this will continue in

ubaru has been on a tear over the last few years, selling more and more vehicles to Canadians who are warming to the idea of owning a Japanese-engineered, all-wheel drive car. AWD is the key. We live in a country with inclement weather and the trend is to AWD, as people experience it and want it in their next vehicle. If a car is offered with frontwheel drive (FWD) or AWD, most people will go for the latter. Subaru provides this as standard equipment on all its cars, except the sporty BRZ that was co-developed with Toyota. Subaru then layers on more power and sporty features into its compact car, the Impreza, to develop the

The 2015 Subaru WRX has an edgy design. WRX and WRX STI rally-inspired cars. These have been incredibly popular, once again, because they come with AWD and the closest competitors do not. • Looks: Back in 2011, Subaru introduced the WRX to look like the bolder and more powerful STI version, complete with bulging fender flares, hood scoops and aggressive attitude. This really helped to propel the WRX into another gear in terms of sales.

To follow up on this idea, the latest 2015 model too has an edgy design similar to the more powerful STI version. It is the same overall length as the last model, but the wheelbase is longer, making bigger doors, and the designers were able to slope the front and rear windows and crop the roof a tad to provide a sleeker profile. The front grille now has a more polished look, but the wheel size is only 17-inches, making the car look too big

for the size and track of the wheels. The STI only comes with 18-inch wheels that are too small, as well. One big advantage is that the side mirrors have been moved from the windshield pillar to the door, making the side class much bigger for improved outward visibility. • Inside: As wonderful as the last WRX was in terms of handling and power, the interior let it down. Escaping city heat for high country By Bob McHugh

O

n a scorching summer’s day, what better vehicle than the aptly named Highlander for a high-altitude scenic drive to find some cool, crisp mountain air and sink a foot in a glacier. All-new for 2014, Highlander Hybrid is the fuel-efficient and eco-friendlier version of what Toyota describes as its mid-sized SUV. But it sure looks and feels bigger than most in this class, plus it can seat up to seven (or eight). Wider and longer than last year, this Highlander is also lower and, more importantly from a driving perspective, it has a lower centre of gravity. There was a time when Highlander looked like an SUV, with an angular two-box design. Its styling lines have softened with successive redesigns and now if you put Highlander beside its Camry-based wagon sibling, the Venza, you need a second look to tell them apart. Not sure if that’s a good thing, but I do like its more car-like driving dynamics. Not far south of the Cana-

dian border, Mount Baker is a glacier-covered mountain that rises 3,286 metres above sea level, which is over 900 m higher than Whistler, the best-known mountain in B.C. Mount Baker is also regarded as the second most active volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range, after Mount St. Helens, but there’s been nary a puff since 1880.The Mount Baker Highway (Hwy. 542) starts in Bellingham (exit No. 255 off the I-5), winds east through a number of small communities and offers some interesting side tours along the way, before it climbs steeply and ends at Artist Point (1,567 m). This large parking lot, which is about 10 kilometres beyond the ski area, is closed during the winter months and has spectacular panoramic views, plus a selection of great hiking trails. The highway crosses the Nooksack River at Nugent’s Corner and tracks east, alongside the north fork of the river, through old growth areas in the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest. Allow about 1.5 hours of leisurely drive time in each

direction. You’ll also need a ($5) day pass to park, which you get from automated dispensers at the Glacier Public Service Centre or at Heather Meadows near the skiing area. The Hybrid Synergy Drive system in Highlander uses a 3.5L Atkinson Cycle V6 gas engine, a high torque electric motor-generator and powerful traction battery. It boasts 10 additional horsepower (280 net horsepower) over the gas-only model, yet uses almost 30 per cent less fuel. Although Toyota has done

an admirable job of masking it, Highlander Hybrid is a weighty (2,200 kilogram) vehicle, and has the usual characteristics of a heavy vehicle. It’s more than fine in a straight line and while handling is laudably predictable, it didn’t seem to like being tossed around on the twisty sections of the highway. Then again, that’s the norm in this class of vehicle. • Side Trips: Mount Baker Vineyards and Winery has a tasting room, offers tours, has a picnic area and is open Thursday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. It’s

about 3 km east of the Nugent’s Corner roundabout, where you can also spot the historic Bethany Church (built in 1907) landmark. Nooksack Falls is just a short (and groomed) gravel road off the highway about 11 km east of Glacier, which is the last community along the highway. You do have to scramble over some (slippery when wet) rocks to get to a good (and safe) fenced viewing area. The water takes a spectacular 30 m plunge, so a close-up view is definitely worth the extra effort.

The dash is covered with soft-touch materials, the centre console has a better design, with a three-easy to use heat and ventilation controls. The rest of the dash has been cleaned up with a much better looking design and more attention to colours and textures. The radio and accompanying Bluetooth system was horrible to pair with my Android phone and I had to do it several times after the initial pairing procedure to stay connected. snap at all speeds. Yes, a sixspeed automatic is still available, but this new CVT makes the WRX easy to drive in town and it can fly when it is placed in the sportiest setting. Other than the new automatic, the most notable change is the much stiffer suspension and tighter steering feel. The front springs are 39 per cent stiffer than the last WRX and the rears are 62 per cent stiffer. This, along with a more rigid platform and tighter steering makes a very sharp feeling car. It might be too sharp for buyers who live with very bumpy roads. • Verdict: Subaru has done a good job with the WRX, the STI and the BRZ. Sporty design, powerful engines and AWD help, but so too does price. The starting price is $29,995 and the most expensive WRX is $36,795.

What the WRX does have is room for all passengers with big doors and very easy access, with a bigger trunk (once you can get it open) than the last model. • Drive: What the WRX is all about is providing a sporty drive and now it is available to a wider range of buyers thanks to a new automatic transmission. Subaru wants to sell more cars, not less, and by adding an automatic for a generation of buyers who might not know how to drive stick, is a major step. This is not your average automatic. It is a continuously variable transmission that has one gear, but the ratio of the gear is changed. This, along with the standard 2.0L four-cylinder turbo with 268hp produces a surprising

GVHBA to hold Fall Home Renovation Show in October By Kerry Vital

If renovations are on your to-do list, you can’t miss the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association Fall Home Renovation Show on Saturday Oct. 4 and Sunday Oct. 5 at the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver Theatre in Coquitlam. The popular Ask a Pro booth will be onsite and providing one-on-one consultations to homeowners looking for help in planning their renovation. The consulations are first come, first

serve and signup will take place at the show. The show focuses on providing homeowners with professional information about all aspects of home renovations, and will include booths for contractors and renovation products and services, as well as information seminars. “Advanced planning and working with experienced professionals will be your best protection,” says GVHBA CEO Bob de Wit. “Considering you are renovating one of your

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

greatest investments, your home, it makes sense to only work with the pros.” De Wit notes that Metro Vancouver homeowners will spend about $3.8 billion renovating their homes this year, making it extremely important to hire a professional RenoMark renovator. “The RenoMark designation assures consumers that the renovator they are dealing with has completed industry-leading education requirements and are part of a professional network apprised of the latest technologies and designs,” says de Wit. “As well, all RenoMark holders have committed themselves to a code of business ethics and offer warranties on the work they do, offering peace of mind to home-owners that RenoMark professionals stand behind (their work).” The event is free, but pre-registration is encouraged. For more information, visit www.gvhba.org. Seminar topics and times will be posted online later this month.

The Tides at Birch Bay gives you the best of both worlds: privacy and relaxation while also being just moments from the beach and the amenities of Birch Bay, including the famous C Shop, marinas, golf courses and many other activities.

Finding some old-fashioned family fun at The Tides By Kerry Vital

Everyone has fond memories of their childhood summer vacations, spending time with family and friends and playing outside for hours. Now it’s time to make more of those memories with The Tides, just minutes from the Canada-U.S. border in Birch Bay, Washington. Canadian families have been coming to Birch Bay for generations: for the beach, the weather, and the cheap price of real estate. “At The Tides, you get the best of both worlds,” says Chris Hughes, a local RE/MAX broker who grew up in West Vancouver and a partner in Compass Point Project Marketing. “It’s private, relaxed and quiet, but you can be at the beach in less than two minutes for all the activity and action you want.” The Tides is located on a sunny plateau with over eleven acres in total, of which seven acres are set aside as nature preserve, private treed parkland and trails, which creates a perfect setting for a second home getaway. There will also be picnic areas, a bocce ball court and an ocean-view lookout with a fire pit (called Sunset Point). The Clubhouse has

a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, billiards area, community kitchen, BBQ area and a lounge. The cottage-style townhomes themselves are homes away from home, with stainlesssteel appliances, granite or quartz countertops and a cozy stone-faced gas fireplace. Outside, you’ll find West Coast Craftsman architecture and a private deck or patio. There are a variety of two- and three-bedroom floorplans available, ranging from 1,082 to over 1,500 square feet, including five ready for immediate occupancy. The location is the biggest draw for buyers. The famous C Shop, which sells candy, ice cream, pizza, baked goods and other treats, is just a minute away. When the tide is out you can walk for miles on the sand and along the Birch Bay beachfront. There are a number of eclectic restaurants and cafes, and plenty of outdoor activities. You’ll also find Birch Bay State Park and boat launch, water slides, gocarts, mini-golf, two marinas and several golf courses nearby. “There are a ton of things to do,” Hughes says, “including digging for clams, fishing and crabbing.”

Organized activities include arts and music festivals, fireworks, the Birch Bay Marathon. parades, sandcastle contests, car shows and many other events. “We’re just 12 minutes from the border,” says Hughes. “You can come down with the family for the entire summer or just for the day.” He also notes that if you’re not able to come down to the cottage yourself, you can rent it out to other families looking for a beach

getaway. The developers of the property include two Canadian families, and most of the buyers so far are from the Lower Mainland. “You can’t touch real estate at this price anywhere in the Lower Mainland,” Hughes says. “It’s way more affordable to buy in the U.S., plus, there’s no property purchase tax. You can buy a two-bedroom unit here at The Tides for less than a studio apartment in the Lower Mainland!” Cottages at The Tides start in the low $200,000s. For more information, visit www.thetidesbirchbay.com, email info@ thetidesbirchbay.com or call 1-888-2558121. The show cottages are open at 4760 Tidal Way, Birch Bay, Friday through Sunday between noon and 4 p.m. or by appointment any time.

Designs, techniques for your walls

I

By Kevin Gilles

nterior design professionals frequently say that the fastest and cheapest way to make a major change to a room’s look is to give boring white walls a facelift. And while painting a room in a bold new colour is the obvious way to make that change, new designs and techniques go a little further with drywall, faux painting, and nontraditional wall coverings. “Everybody has different visions, depending on where they have searched online,” says Naz Merali, owner-operator of Maple Ridge Paint and Deco. “It all depends on what a person is looking to do.” The paint and wall-covering specialist says there is a trend in colour changes on a homes’ feature walls. “There’s a modern trend right now in something called ‘greige,’ which is a gray-beige kind of colour. The homes of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s had a lot of earth and tan colours. They are now flipping over and going to ‘greige,’ which is, like I said, very light grays and very light tan colours to make it more modern — with a lot of white trim.” Merali says people are also interested in metallic finishes. “This is something that happened a few years ago, but they’ve started looking at that again,” he explains. “You can get metallic paints and you do it in a small area, not on a big wall because it becomes quite overpowering when you do it on a big feature wall.” He also says faux painting is popular these days for people looking to shake up their home’s appearance. Faux painting, which uses decorative and special paint finishes, is a popular way to change your home’s appearance. Faux painting produces finishes that resemble wallpaper through the use of glazing, sponging, ragging, wood graining and even freehand-design techniques. “We have people who come and say, ‘We

Using drywall techniques to add design touches to walls or re-texturing ceilings and walls can dramatically change the appearance of a home with a small outlay of cash. Walls and ceilings can be refinished many ways. Texturing or smoothing walls can modernize older homes or even return original character to homes that may have been carelessly remodeled. Changing oldfashioned styles of texture.

want to do a faux finish on a wall.’ So they’ll basically take a colour, then they’ll put a glaze on it to create a faux finish,” Merali says. With a great idea, a bit of skill, and a new colour scheme, your home’s interior can resemble anything from an ancient Tuscan building, a marble wall or even a cloudy sky. While many looks are achieved with faux finishing techniques on flat surfaces, threedimensional effects can be achieved on alreadytextured finishes. When products are applied to walls in layers, fireplaces and ceilings can look and feel like real stone, crumbling masonry, or peeling paint — to give you that European country look. Some other finishes can resemble linen, grass cloth or denim. Using wallpaper has always been a popular alternative to painting rooms. “Somebody will come and say we don’t want to do that but we want to do a wallpaper feature [wall],” says Merali. “So they’ll get a really good quality paper and that as a feature ... one wall in a highly visible area. Most likely it’s done in a dining room or a master bedroom.” There are many types of wall coverings that can be used to enliven a room. Bright fabrics,

grass cloth, even cork are used as unique ways to dramatically alter how a room looks. Cork wall coverings are thicker but can make for cozy, dark and woodsy effects in family rooms or offices. Paper-backed fabric shows the high-quality look of a fabric wall covering but can be installed easily like a vinyl-coated paper. The backing adds stiffness that hides wall defects and makes it easier to manage the fabric. Changing old-fashioned styles of texture (like skip and trowel or brushed) can modernize a 30-yearold home. Covering texture styles with a new layer of hand-troweled joint compound to make it resemble plaster could easily restore the charm to a Victorian home. Custom textures, treatments and styles — such as combining textured walls with totally smooth ceilings —

can give a home a unique look. A very popular right style these days is the orange peel finish, created by spraying texture compound onto a smooth wall and then letting it dry. Then paint it when ready for a brand new look. Merali says many people are looking to paints and finishes to change the looks of kitchen cabinets. “To change kitchen cabinets can be an expensive exercise,” he explains. “So what some people are doing in the interim is they’re actually painting the kitchen cabinets. A lot of paints can adhere to kitchen cabinets. They don’t have to be oil paints; they can be latex paints. “It’s a fraction of the cost. It may need be as durable as changing your whole kitchen cabinets, but it’s enough to get you by for a little while until your finances are in order and you can change the cabinets at that time. So you’d just do a little bit of sanding, put a little bit of primer on, and you can paint, spray or roll a kitchen cabinet and it will look like new. When you’re house-hunting, choosing a home with natural gas for space and water heating can save you money. Believe it at fortisbc.com/calculator. *These are approximate savings based on the difference between annual natural gas and electricity costs for space and water heating of a 2,300 square-foot house with average insulation and four occupants in the FortisBC Lower Mainland service area. Calculation compared high-efficiency natural gas furnace and large storage tank water heater with electric resistance heating (baseboards) and equivalent water heater and is based on FortisBC natural gas rates as of July 2014 ($11.054/GJ) and electricity rates in the service area identified (Tier 1 and 2: $0.079 and $0.118 per kWh). Actual savings may vary. Savings do not include potential rebates and/or incentives.

alton Yorke got a good taste of the Western Hockey League last season, suiting up for 40 games with the Kelowna Rockets. Now the 18-year-old defenseman from Maple Ridge is going to try and take a bite out of the NHL, going to the San Jose Sharks rookie camp, with the hope of getting an invitation to the club’s main camp or his first professional contract. “It’s a huge opportunity to kickstart my career,” said Yorke, who graduated from Samuel Robertson secondary in June. After playing his formative years with the Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association, Yorke joined the Rockets last year after several seasons with the Northeast Chiefs of the B.C. Major Midget League. He played both forward and defense for Kelowna, getting in 10 fights. See Yorke, 34

Dalton Yorke, after two season in the B.C. Major Midget League, played 40 games with the Kelowna Rockets in WHL last season, at both defense and forward.

Burrards fall in Game 1 The Maple Ridge Burrards opened the WLA finals Wednesday, falling 9-5 to the Shamrocks in Victoria. The Burrards fell behind 2-1 in the first period, then 5-3 after the second. They climbed within a goal in third, but then surrendered three straight goals. Curtis Dickson, Patrick O’Meara, Ben McIntosh, Colton Porter and Riley Loewen scored for Maple Ridge, while Frankie Scigliano made 40 saves. The Shamrocks outshot the Burrards 49-21 and scored three times on the power play and once with an extra attacker. The game featured 147 penalty minutes, including 85 by the Burrards, most coming on three third-period fights and game misconducts. • Game 2 is Friday at Maple Ridge Planet Ice, 5:45 p.m.

Patience pays off for junior B Flames By M ichael Hall sports@mapleridgenews.com

Ridge Meadows Flames head coach and general manager Jaime Fiset likens his current group of players to a band of brothers, one that he is pushing to play on the last day of the season. The team has scoring depth up front and experience on the blue line and in net. “We know we’ll be good this season,” he said. The Flames, who lost in the first round of the playoffs last year to the Abbotsford Pilots, open the junior B exhibition season Friday at Planet Ice against the Delta Ice Hawks, 7:30 p.m. They will play only four exhibition games this year, fewer than in the past, and practice more, focussing on systems and building chemistry. The team will carry 23 players, and Fiset expects to have as many as 15 returnees, depending how many stick with junior A clubs after tryouts. Players like Jake Holland, Boston Colley, Jordan Rendle and Michael Bell will be expected to be leaders and carry the offense up front, while Joe Olson, Andrew Castagna and Cam Alder will play big minutes on the back end. Tyler Read and Kurt Klimek are expected to return and split minutes in net. Fiset said either one could be a starter on any team in the Pacific Junior Hockey League. “It’s a nice position to be in.” The Flames have also recruited the top two scorers from the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds of the B.C. Major Midget League, Nick Ponak and Andrew Strelezki, who both recorded more than 50 points each, as well as Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey midget graduates Jonathin Weloy and Chris Denney. Fiset is pleased with the players the minor hockey association continues to produce and expects to have at least six on the Flames this year. The team will have to fill the leadership void,

though, created by the graduation of last year’s captain Travis Oddy and assistant captain Trevor Sutton. Who will wear letters this year hasn’t been decided, but there is no shortage of candidates. Fiset said the Flames were one of the youngest teams in the league last year, by design, building around a core of players born in 1995. They were a strong offensive team, going undefeated during an eight-game stretch between November and December. Now they have more depth and experience. The coaches were patient with the young players, not panicking if the team lost two or three games in a row, but building confidence for the future. “It’s going to pay off this year, we think,” said Fiset, in his third season as head coach of the Flames. He now has a group that won’t be satisfied with finishing third in the division and just making the playoffs. “We plan to finish first in our division and go deep in the playoffs,” he said. “We want to play on the last day of the season.” They will attempt to do that with speed and skill and more size, an effective transition game utilizing those attributes, and great conditioning, along with sound defensive structure and a culture of hard work and team unity. “If someone loses the puck, we want it back, right now,” Fiset said. The players are catching on quick, he added. “It’s a great group of guys who love to work hard. They like being around each other, pushing each other.” It’s something that’s carried over from last year. Klimek stood up in the dressing room between periods during a game late last season and said, ‘You know, guys, we are 23 brothers. Our job is to lift each other up.” And they are, Fiset said. “Guys are pushing each other to get better.” • The Flames open the regular season at home Sept. 12.

The Flames will have to fill the leadership void created by the graduation of last year’s captain, Travis Oddy. THE NEWS/files

Making most of opportunity Yorke from 31

He spent the off-season working on his skating, his lateral mobility and quickness, as well as his puck handling and shot, on the ice and in his garage. He also worked more on his conditioning, lifting weights and going to a Crossfit gym. He leaves for Kelowna this weekend for training camp, which starts Monday, and is confident he

can secure a full-time role on the Rockets’ blueline. He expects to start there, at least, but has been told he could play some forward again if the team needs some energy up front. Yorke, 6’2.5” and 210 pounds, is fine with that, but see himself more as a smooth skating, physical defenseman, a bit like his favorite player, Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber, who also

played for the Rockets. Yorke found the junior game much quicker than major midget, especially the speed and crispness of the passes. He learned to keep his head up all the time, and that if he didn’t make the first pass he saw open right away, that option disappeared. He learned that if he made mistakes, he had to be more basic in his decisions. “Keep it simple.”

It helped that he was on the ice every day for practice, and that coaches were always willing to help him work on his game afterwards. “I improved tremendously last year,” he said. Yorke wants to be more of a leader on the Rockets this season and more consistent in his play, to contribute every game. He thinks he can. He also thinks he can make an impression in San Jose. The team interviewed him before the NHL draft in June, but didn’t select him. They called after the draft and invited him to the rookie camp, for which he leaves Sept. 10. The Boston Bruins also invited Yorke to their rookie camp, but he chose the Sharks because they’ve shown consistent interest in him and because he’s long been a fan of the team, which featured two B.C. bred defensemen on its blue line last season – Scott Hannan and Matt Irwin. Yorke will first take part in fitness testing with the Sharks, then a series of practices and scrimmages before going to Anaheim for an exhibition game against the Ducks’ prospects. At first Yorke thought attending the San Jose camp would be good experience. But then he decided he wanted more than that – he wants to make an impression. He wants to get invited to the main camp. He wants the team to offer him a contract. He’s not going to San Jose just to skate. “Almost every day I think about what I’m going to do when I get there.” At first it seemed surreal. He’s still nervous and excited, but ready to go. “It’s something I’ve always wanted and I’m really close,” Yorke said, “so I want to make sure I make the most of it.”

ROESCH

MARIA THERESA JOSEFA (NEE MULLER) SEPTEMBER 2, 1922 – JUNE 10, 2014 Mia Roesch was born in the city of Reichenberg, Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia. She passed away in Maple Ridge at the age of 91. Predeceased by her parents, Friedrich and Frieda Muller, she is survived by two sisters in Germany, Ingrid Muller, Karin Reuke, brotherin-law Ludger and nieces Marike and Julia Reuke. Mia was a gifted artist, a seamstress, a nature lover, a strong individual and local activist in her community. Her acreage in Whonnock was manicured to perfection. She had a great love for the rural life. In particular, her pampered chickens were all named and treated like royalty. She was a true pioneer growing most of her own food, working hard and keeping, “the jungle at bay”. When she moved from Coquitlam to Maple Ridge she insisted on taking the most memorable section of her house, which she combined with her newly purchased home. Her artistic ability extended into painting chairs, floors, cupboards and walls with the most unique, and brilliant designs. She was an active champion of a quiet and peaceful neighbourhood and well known for riding her bike to town or taking the bus. She often wrote letters to the local newspaper in her desire to uphold individual rights. Mia was generous and truly unforgettable to all who encountered her. Maple Ridge has lost an ‘original’. A Celebration of Life will take place at 11:00am on Saturday, Sept. 6 in the Open Door Church at 11391 Dartford St., Maple Ridge. Refreshments will follow.
