Labour dispute extends summer camps into fall Drew McLachlan News staff
With no end in sight in the B.C. teachers strike, many parents have raised concerns over childcare should classes not resume in September. To alleviate parents’ concerns, the City of Victoria will be carrying over some of its summertime programming into the usual school season. After running six summer camps this season, for ages four to 14, Victoria Parks and Recreation recently opened registration for two extended summer camps slated to start Sept. 2, normally the first day of school. City of Victoria’s youth programmer Ryan Lance said that registration for the camps is already filling up.
“Extending summer camps isn’t typical for us, this is the only year we’ve done it,” Lance said. If school resumes, registrants will be offered a refund, but in the event that a resolution isn’t made, parents could be seeing the two-week camps continuing deeper into the fall. “We’re going to be doing as much as we can, but it really depends on staffing,” Lance said. “We’re hoping to continue on for as long as the labour disputes are happening. Right now we’re planning on a week-by-week basis.” While day camps typically rune from June 30 to the end of summer vacation, the beginning of the labour disputes also saw parents asking for camps to begin early, causing the city to organize camps for June 16, two weeks ahead of schedule.
If the extended summer camps prove necessary, they will be held at the sport hut at Beacon Hill Park, and focus on out trips to places like Mineral World and Butterfly Gardens, as the weather may not allow for typical summer camp activities like swimming. Camps are open to ages six to eight and nine to 12, and parents can register online at victoria.ca/recreation or by phone at 250-361-0732. reporter@vicnews.com

COMMUNITY NEWS IN BRIEF
Man jailed for tax evasion A former Victoria resident has plead guilty to income tax evasion in the Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa. Denis Wilson was ordered to serve a conditional sentence of two years less one day, including house arrest and 80 hours of community service. He was fined $62,676, representing 75 per cent of the taxes evaded. A CRA investigation determined that from 2006 to 2011, Wilson prepared income tax returns for 14 clients, in which he overstated business losses. Some of the businesses were non-existent or were, in fact, hobbies
of the taxpayers. This caused his clients to evade federal income tax in the amount of $83,568. Wilson gained his clients’ trust by falsely representing himself as a former CRA employee. His clients were unaware that he made false claims on their returns.

Teen dives into fish biology Esquimalt High student earns prestigious summer fellowship
Parents get website guide to teacher strike Tom Fletcher Black Press
Drew McLachlan News staff
Esquimalt High student Amanda Noel has been spending her summer in the lab and in the field, working with University of Victoria professors Francis Juanes and David Stormer to study the Strait of Georgia’s fish population. Earlier this year, Noel received a Hutton Fellowship, a $3,000 scholarship that also pairs recipients with a mentor to guide them through a summer-long, hands-on experience in fisheries science. The fellowship is granted by the American Fisheries Society and is rarely received by a Canadian – Noel being the only one this year. Noel’s work is focussed on studying the food content of salmon and other fish in the Strait of Georgia, as well as what effect the rising temperatures in the strait will have on them. As the first project Noel has worked on, she said that it took some time to get used to the equipment and working in such a professional setting, as her experience prior was limited to biology class. “It’s really interesting to go out in the field, and be surrounded by people with so much experience,” Noel said. “And they’ve encouraged me to ask questions, they have time to walk me through what we’re doing. The whole environment is new to me, but (the program) has helped me become familiar with this kind of work. It’s given me experience I wouldn’t have otherwise gotten until university.” Noel said that she’s always been interested in marine biology, having lived near the ocean her whole life and excelled in science class. “Amanda has a keen interest on the subject, she’s focused, pays attention to detail and she doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty, which is important when you’re dissecting fish,” Juanes said. Though Noel will return to Esquimalt High in the fall for her senior year, she said she’s looking forward to getting back to the lab as a UVic student next year. reporter@vicnews.com

The B.C. government has launched a new website to prepare parents for a possible continuation of the teacher strike after Labour Day. The website, bcparentinfo. ca, promises the latest bargaining updates on B.C.’s festering teacher dispute, and will act as a portal for parents registering to collect $40 a day for each child under 12 if the strike drags on. It also offers links to online learning resources from school districts, which have proliferated in recent years. Talks have continued under a media blackout since mediator Vince Ready met the two sides last week. “Mr. Ready agreed to monitor the situation, and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will be productive,” the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and B.C. Public School Employers’ Association said in a brief statement. Negotiations broke off and a full-scale strike and lockout ended the school year in June. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher met both sides earlier but declined to attempt mediation, after finding too large a gap between the two sides. Education Minister Peter Fassbender and BCPSEA chief negotiator Peter Cameron have maintained that the BCTF’s benefit demands remain far beyond those of other public sector unions that have settled contracts. Also at issue is class size and special needs support, with BCPSEA’s latest offer rejected by the union and the latest of a series of court actions scheduled for this fall. Ready’s last involvement in the long-running series of teacher disputes was as an industrial inquiry commissioner in 2007. At that time he recommended that a senior provincial official be involved in talks along with an independent mediator. editor@vicnews.com

hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack. Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.

Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder W
Friday, August 22, 2014 - VICTORIA
But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty pharmacies. The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day. This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. That is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors. As for me – I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine! I turned 90 this year.

Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death. Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries. Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal. I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astronaut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking cholesterol lowering drugs (CLD’s). I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications. I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.

Despite the name, the coordinators of Victoria’s Terry Fox Run are asking residents to bike, walk or even have their heads shaved to support the Terry Fox Foundation, if running doesn’t suit them. “There’s a lot of different options for people, even for fundraising,” said Doug Lamb, run coordinator. “There’s no entry fee, and you can make a voluntary donation or collect pledges, even online.” Preceding the run will be a public film screening at the Mile Zero monument, where Terry’s statue is located, on Sept. 13 at dusk. The main event will take place at 10:30 a.m. the next morning, following a 10-minute warmup. The five-kilometre route travels along Dallas Road to St. Charles Street, and participants are encouraged to run, walk or bike the route multiple times. The Terry Fox Great Canadian Hair Do will take place from 10:15 a.m. to noon, giving runners a chance to participate in both events. In addition to raising money, participants can also donate their hair to make wigs for cancer patients, assuming their hair is 25 to 30 centimetres and free of dye. Now in its eighth year, the Hair Do has managed to raise $80,000 since 2007, with firefighters from Greater Victoria being some of the biggest supporters. Since 2000 the run itself has managed to raise over $330,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation, which gives 84 cents per dollar to cancer research. Lamb said the run typically pulls in up to 800 participants in Victoria. Coordinators are still looking for volunteers. reporter@vicnews.com

Court backs appeal of marijuana use The B.C. Court of Appeal has ruled that patients can use their medical marijuana in forms other than dried plant material. Victoria resident Owen Smith argued that Canada’s medical marijuana laws are unconstitutional because they fail to allow people with a medical need to possess cannabis in the form of body creams, cookies and brownies. Smith was charged in 2009 with possession for trafficking of THC, marijuanas active compound.

Victoria police are looking for more information after a violent home invasion last Saturday. Four masked men kicked in a door to a townhouse in the 300block of Robert Street just before 4 a.m., waking the couple who lived there. They pepper sprayed the man after he confronted them, and fled the house after the woman alerted neighbours. The couple were later treated for the effects of pepper spray.

Meanwhile the festival has discontinued operations in Centennial Square and has centralized the balance of activities to Government Street and Bastion Square. “The feedback we received last year is most preferred to have the Kids’ Chalk Zone and our Performance Stage closer to Government Street where the bulk of artists are chalking,” said John Vickers, executive director of the Victoria International Chalk Art Society. “We took that advice to heart and thanks to
collaborative efforts with the Bastion Square Market, we now look forward to hosting the Kid’s Zone on Langley Street while the performance stage will relocate to Government Street.” Vickers said he had hoped to further expand the Government Street closure this year. However with final grant results determined, he was not able to raise the funding necessary to do so. He said however the Fort to Yates street closure zone will be reconfigured to host many more artists within the existing area. Andrea Paquette, founder of the Bipolar Disorder Society of BC, is looking for youth suffering from the disorder to join the Youth Action Group, which will research how to stay well despite mental illness. Drew McLachlan News staff
Bipolar youth sought for research Drew McLachlan News staff
The Bipolar Disorder Society of BC is looking for six Victoria residents diagnosed with bipolar disorder, aged 19 to 25, to help fill what founder Andrea Paquette calls a “gap in youth research.” Having recently received a $159,000 research grant from the Vancouver Foundation, the society, along with the University of B.C.-based Collaborative Research Team to Study Bipolar Disorder (CREST.BD), are forming two youth action groups in Victoria and the Comox Valley. Each group will research ways in which youth can stay well while living with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is characterized by periods of mania, in which the individual feels overwhelmingly happy and ener-
getic, which can result in irresponsible choice. These periods of mania transition into bouts of depression, in which the individual often feels unmotivated, anxious, hopeless or isolated. Statistically, those diagnosed with bipolar disorder face a much higher risk of self-harm or suicide than the general population. “Its a challenge everyday,” Paquette said. “It’s more than having good and bad days. One day you can be euphoric, goaloriented and so energetic you can’t sleep. The next morning you won’t be able to get out of bed for three days.” Paquette said that those interested in joining the youth action group don’t need any previous experience, but should have an interest in research and be available one to three days a month for the next two years. Training will be provided by a Toronto-
based group, with research methods being decided afterwards. Positions are paid. The society will also be hosting two research forums, open to all youth aged 16 to 25 suffering from bipolar disorder, the first of which will take place January in Victoria. The society runs several youth mental health support groups in Greater Victoria, which Paquette said she formed after seeing a lack of groups focussed solely on youth. “Its amazing to see how the groups have grown, you’ll get people who haven’t gotten out of the house for six months come down and make friends,” Paquette said. “Every day (living with bipolar disorder) is a challenge, but with therapy, medication, nutrition and support, you can still live a full life.” reporter@vicnews.com

OUR VIEW
Scams abound in the region Almost every week we receive phone calls from Victoria and Esquimalt residents, complaining about the latest computer or telephone scam. Many of us have become wise to the ploys, and disregard the emails and phone calls. But clearly the scams still work, to a certain degree, or they would not continue to be used. Most email services are very good at detecting the electronic scam artists, sending such letters directly to the junk pile. All that said, with the aging population in Greater Victoria, it is worth the reminder. These scam artists specifically target the elderly. Why? Because the elderly are easy prey. They are typically more naive when it comes to computer knowledge, and thereby more likely to believe that an email sent to their address is indeed a call out to them, from a long-lost relative in Nigeria. To the younger generation, that may sound gullible. But the elders in our society were raised in a more honest environment; where if someone asked for help, you believed they needed help. In many ways, it’s an enviable attitude, and one that is fading fast. So, here are a few tips to our elderly neighbours – a few red flags to watch out for, when considering who is asking for your help. 1.) When checking your email, disregard anything from Nigeria, Somalia, or any other country, unless you have direct relations with said country, and recognize the name of the sender. 2.) You did not win any money from a foreign lottery. The oldest marketing line in lotteries applies here: You can’t win if you don’t buy a ticket. And you did not buy a ticket. 3.) That service call from Telus, warning you that your computer has been hacked is not a service call from Telus. This scam is not only the most prevalent, currently; but also the easiest to dismiss. Telus does not make unsolicited service calls. You call them if you have a problem. So, the next time “Telus” or “B.C. Hydro” or “Revenue Canada” calls you to tell you your computer has been hacked, follow these steps: 1.) Put them on hold. 2.) Go for lunch. They will be gone by the time you return. Of note, Esquimalt taxpayers would receive a payment into one pocket but be billed out of their other pocket in addition to paying for much of our own mitigation and amenities that the CRD previously promised. To date, the CRD has already spent more than $65 million on the sewage project – and there is nothing to show for it. The CRD had no legal authority to tamper with the dulymade decision of Esquimalt’s dulyelected council, but it was willing to waste more time and money on badgering our community. Bryson, whose municipality has no financial stake in the sewage project, should stop promoting the SeaTerra sewage scheme. It does not have a location, is based on technologies that do not give us the best environmental and economic results, clearly does not have the support of the citizens of key participating communities, and has already wasted millions of dollars. It’s time to stop the insanity of “doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” Change will only occur when we change who is sitting on the CRD board and their leadership. The opportunity for change will be this fall’s municipal election. Sanity should prevail. ••• Tim Morrison is a Township of Esquimalt councillor.

Pilot project offers free HIV testing at pharmacy Testing part of Island Health initiative It is estimated there are more than 3,500 people in B.C. who are living with HIV but don’t know it. Starting this month, a made-inB.C. pilot program has a Victoria pharmacy offering rapid HIV tests to its customers, free of charge. The year-long pilot will evaluate the possibility of offering testing permanently in some pharmacies. Medicine Shoppe pharmacy in Nanaimo began offering tests earlier this month while the other, located at 104-1964 Fort St. in Victoria, is set to launch at the end of the month.
“The best way to ensure early diagnosis of HIV is to make testing as easy as possible”, said Dr. Brendan Carr, president and CEO of Island Health. “By removing the barriers to taking an HIV test – especially by offering testing in places where people already encounter the health care system – we can reduce the stigma associated with HIV.” The pilot is being funded through the province’s pioneering Seek and Treat for the Optimal Prevention (STOP) of HIV/AIDS program – an initiative focused on increasing the reach of HIV prevention, testing and care to residents of B.C. Increased reach of HIV testing
Catholics prepare for new bishop The Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria welcomes its new bishop later this month. The installation mass for the Most Reverend Gary Gordon is Thursday (Aug. 28) at 7 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, 740 View St. As seating in the cathedral is limited, entrance to the celebration is by invitation or reserved ticket only. Overflow seating will be available at the former St. Andrew’s elementary school, 1002 Pandora Ave. The celebration will be live streamed to this location. Gordon is the 17th Bishop of Victoria. He replaces Most Rev. Richard Gagnon who was appointed Archbishop of Winnipeg last October.
is a key pillar of STOP HIV/AIDS. The provincial program encourages routine HIV testing to ensure early links to care, treatment and support. The initiative aims to improve the health of those living with HIV and prevent further infections. “You can get tested for HIV while you get your prescriptions filled” said Dr. Dee Hoyano, medical health officer for Island Health. “If we’re going to get to zero new HIV infections on Vancouver Island, people have to know if they are infected and follow up with lifesaving treatment. HIV is different now. Knowing you are living with HIV can save your life, because early treatment really works well.” The pilot project will be evalu-
ated over the course of the year to measure quality of care, customer uptake, testing volumes, diagnoses and cost effectiveness. Last month, two pharmacies in the Lower Mainland, both part of the same pilot project, launched rapid HIV testing and have had already had 100 tests completed. Rapid HIV tests deliver a preliminary result in less than five minutes. Anyone receiving a non-negative result will be connected with a medical clinic where doctors will provide support to confirm a diagnosis and link individuals to care and treatment, as required. A person who is living with HIV and taking their prescribed medication is up to 96 per cent less
likely to transmit the virus to others. “Often, people who are newly diagnosed with HIV can already be in the advanced stages of the disease” said Sophie Bannar-Martin, program co-ordinator of Island Health’s STOP HIV/AIDS project. “HIV is a chronic infection, and early treatment is crucial in prolonging people’s lives along with and greatly improving quality of life and reducing transmission to others.” Access to free HIV testing has been expanded across the Island, and is already available through community testing sites, hospitals, walk-in-clinics and family physicians. editor@vicnews.com

The Land Rover LR4 was not what I was expecting, instead it was a pleasant surprised. Looks: I’m used to seeing bulky and cumbersome old Land Rovers on the back roads, spinning out rocks while attempting a hill climb and shaking the occupants to bits! Fast forward to today’s version of the Land Rover and you will find an outstanding front end that is easily recognized with the signature grille and projector style headlights. Also feature are those trend setting side vents on the front fenders, much copied in the aftermarket. And the large rear glass panels that extend up into the roof line make the overall appearance very clean looking and unique. Optional 20 inch rims are worth the upcharge. In the cab: My first impression after climbing into the cab was one of disbelief. I did not expect that level of comfort. The sight lines are amazing and the blind spot was almost non-existent. The rear seats had plenty of room for adults and the cargo area was adequate. The heated leather wrapped steering wheel featured all the controls one needed to operate the equipment without distraction. The front and rear seats are heated. Power tilt/slide front sunroof and two sections of glass covering the

7 roof area over the 2nd and third row seats allow plenty of natural light in. Safety: There are six airbags, including side curtain, side thorax and front passenger with occupant detection system, four-channel all terrain ABS, electronic brake assist and an electronic parking brake. Blind spot monitoring, closing-vehicle sensing and reverse traffic detection systems have also been added. Power: The engine is a 340hp 3.0 litre supercharged V6 coupled with an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. This transmission features Command Shift and sport mode that actively responds to your driving habits and road conditions by reconfiguring the shift patterns for optimum drivability in all situations and is mated with a single speed transfer case or an optional 2 speed electronically controlled transfer case. Stop-start technology helps to improve the fuel economy. Four wheel electronic traction control, hill descent control and four-corner air suspension with terrain response not only make this vehicle manouevre well on the road, but also make it fully capable of tackling the back roads too. Roadworthy: This is the first time I have driven the Land Rover LR4 and visions of driving a boxy SUV through the Serengeti looking at exotic animals came to mind. I

was pleasantly surprised at the comfort level and the drivability of this vehicle. Verdict: This luxurious vehicle has comfort and performance levels that should be expected at this price point. This is a heavy vehicle and fully loaded with passengers and gear it is not going to get great fuel economy, but for some reason I don’t think that matters. Striving to be at one with your steed
Alexandra Straub
Bryan Hourt, Acura’s assistant large project leader of vehicle performance, tells of his upbringing on a ranch in northwest Nebraska, he talks about horse power. He explains that when you connect with the animal, getting on with life’s daily tasks is much easier. If you’re out of sync with your horse, you work twice as hard since you have to think for both yourself and it. In one situation, you enjoy yourself and get more done. The other is exhausting. If you’re in a car that you don’t connect with, everyday routine can be more arduous than it has to be. Its quirks rub you the wrong way. But, if you love your car and know exactly what it’s going to
do in any given situation life on the road is so much better. Enter the 2015 Acura TLX that blends horsepower, with grace and poise. When I slipped inside the cabin of the new TLX, pushed the start button, selected the “D” button and drove off, confidence was apparent from the start. It’s a vehicle designed with performance in mind from the ground up. Its chassis features a newly designed four-wheel independent suspension system to help you enjoy country roads or urban life. It’s tame at slower speeds – and very good table manners – but has the ability to take on higher speed challenges without breaking a sweat. I might have taken a corner or two relatively swiftly, but the steering feel, and its ability to maintain composure in
a turn was impressive. Each model comes with Acura’s Integrated Dynamics System that allows drivers to customize their driving experience through four selectable modes. Depending on the setting, Acura says, “IDS will adjust power-steering effort, throttle response, transmission shift logic, HVAC system operation, and the control logic for either the P-AWS or SH-AWD systems. The new Sport+ mode unlocks the full performance potential of the TLX with the most aggressive settings.” Whether you want that extra bit of gusto, or you are driving around town, the TLX has a mode for you. Three TLX models will be offered. The first comes with a 2.4-litre, i-VTEC inline-4 engine with an eight-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (8DCT) with torque
converter, and Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS). It has an output of 206 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque. Then there’s a trim with a 3.5-litre, i-VTEC V6 engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission and P-AWS. That produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, and gets 10 more hp and 13 more lb-ft of torque versus the 2014 TL 3.5-litre engine. Lastly, there’s the TLX SH-AWD with next-generation Super-Handling AllWheel Drive, available only with the 3.5-litre, 290 horsepower V6 and ninespeed automatic. Eventually, both the TSX and TL will be succeeded by the TLX. It makes sense. Dimensionally, the TLX will be positioned between the ILX entry-luxury sedan and the RLX flagship Acura sedan.
It’s time for a Fall Maintenance ✓ Checkup (Includes Oil Change and Multi-Point Inspection) Applies only to Honda vehicles. Additional charge for synthetic oil.
There’s room for five, 405L of cargo room around back and places to store personal items. Sure there are sportier offerings in the segment. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is one of them. So is the Audi A4. But what works for the TLX is its understated elegance. It’s pleasant to drive, and with a centre stack stripped of unnecessary buttons making it more user friendly. I’d describe my experience in both the 4 and 6 cylinder TLXs to be pleasant. Not the bad pleasant, the kind of adjective you use to describe a mother in-law or awkward coworker. But pleasant in the way that it’s quiet, does the job well and is a pleasure to drive. The 2015 TLX has a starting MSRP for the four-cylinder engine at $34,990. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

near the skiing area. The Hybrid Synergy Drive system in Highlander uses a 3.5L Atkinson Cycle V6 gas engine, a high torque electric motor-generator and powerful traction battery. It boasts 10 additional horsepower (280 net horsepower) over the gas-only model, yet uses almost 30 per cent less fuel. Although Toyota has done an admirable job of masking it, Highlander Hybrid is a weighty (2,200 kg) vehicle, and has the usual characteristics of a heavy vehicle. It’s more than fine in a straight line and while handling is laudably predictable, it didn’t seem to like being tossed around on the twisty sections of the highway. Then again, that’s the norm in this class of vehicle. Side trips: Mount Baker Vineyards and Winery has a tasting room, offers tours, has a picnic area and is open Thursday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. It’s about 3 km east of the Nugent’s Corner roundabout, where you can also spot the historic Bethany Church (built in 1907) landmark. Nooksack Falls is just a short (and groomed) gravel road off the highway about 11 km east of Glacier, which is the last community along the highway. You do have to scramble over some (slippery when wet) rocks to get to a good (and safe) fenced viewing area. The water takes a spectacular 30 m plunge, so a close-up view is definitely worth the extra effort. Interesting Eating Places: Anthony’s

On a muggy, scorching hot summer’s day, what better vehicle than the aptly named Highlander for a high-altitude scenic drive to find some cool, crisp mountain air and sink a foot in a glacier. All-new for 2014, Highlander Hybrid is the fuel-efficient and eco-friendlier version of what Toyota describes as its mid-sized SUV, but it sure looks and feels bigger than most in this class, plus it can seat up to seven (or eight). Wider and longer than last year, this Highlander is also lower and, more importantly from a driving perspective, it has a lower centre of gravity. There was a time when Highlander looked like an SUV, with an angular two-box design. Its styling lines have softened with successive redesigns and now if you put Highlander beside its Camry-based wagon sibling, the Venza, you need a second look to tell them apart. Not sure if that’s a good thing, but I do like its more car-like driving dynamics. Not far south of the Canadian border, Mount Baker is a glacier-covered mountain that rises 3,286 m (10,781 ft) above sea level, which is over 900 m (3,000 ft) higher than Whistler, the best-known mountain in B.C. Mount Baker is also regarded as the second most active volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range, after Mount St. Helens, but there’s been nary a puff since 1880.The Mount Baker Highway (Hwy. 542) starts in Bellingham (exit #255 off the I-5), winds east through a number of small communities and offers some interesting side tours along the way, before it climbs steeply and ends at Artist Point (1,567 m / 5,140 ft.). This large parking lot, which is about 10 km beyond the ski area, is closed during the winter months and has spectacular panoramic views, plus a selection of great hiking trails. The highway crosses the Nooksack River at Nugent’s Corner and tracks east, alongside the north fork of the river, through old growth areas in the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest. Allow about 1.5 hours of leisurely drive time in each direction. You’ll also need a ($5) day pass to park, which you get from automated dispensers at the Glacier Public Service Center or at Heather Meadows

Victoria swimmers attempt trip across Lake Cowichan Travis Paterson News staff
Two of Victoria’s most ambitious open water swimmers are attempting to swim the length of Cowichan Lake for a second time this weekend. And this time they’re making it a double. In July 2013, Susan Simmons and Alex Cape swam the length of Cowichan Lake in a little more than 11 hours. This year they’re planning two lengths of the lake, 70km, a feat that will be at least 24 hours in the water, non-stop. They start Friday at 2 p.m. from the south end of the lake and anticipate a Lake Cowichan finish late on Saturday afternoon. “There is a strict code with open water swimmers,” said Simmons, of James Bay. “No wetsuits is one. But we are allowed to get out of the water for 20 minutes after we swim one length of the lake, if we wish.” Simmons’ has captured the hearts of many as she’s suffered from multiple sclerosis for 20 years. Swimming, and a rawfood focused diet, are her way of dealing with MS. Through her accomplishments, which include swimming with a relay team across the Georgia Straight and as of last month, the English Channel, Simmons has pulled together not only the Greater Victoria MS community, but people from far and wide.
“I receive messages of support, messages of personal success stories that I influenced, and more, through my website,” Simmons said. To prepare for the challenge Simmons and Cape swim with multiple masters’ clubs around town, including the 50-metre lanes at Crystal Pool and Saanich Commonwealth Place, and have spent the majority of their weekends for the past few months swimming the open waters of Thetis Lake. “We’re in Thetis for hours and hours every Saturday and then we do it again on Sunday. We’ve actually found Thetis isn’t big enough for our training purposes,” Simmons said. Should the couple succeed, they’ll need about 24 to 26 hours to complete the 70km length. To make it an even 70km, they have tacked an extra kilometre into their route, upping it from the 34km they did last summer. The time and distance put them into a couple of exclusive open water swimming clubs, the limited 24-hour club, and the top 15 per cent of all successful open water swim attempts in terms of distance. The logistics are plenty. Len Martel heads the organizing which includes dozens of volunteers. In the water there are safety boats and kayaks, as well as several additional swimmers who are “jumping in” for two- or five-kilometre stretches, maybe more. reporter@saanichnews.com

Downsizing a home after decades A few phone calls can soothe a daunting task Angela Cowan News staff
Moving is a stressful experience at the best of times, and downsizing after living in the same house for decades can seem like an insurmountable task. But with a few phone calls and a bit of effort, the process can be relatively pain-free. “The first call should be to a realtor who specializes in (the neighbourhood) and specializes in downsizing,” says Cassie Kangas, an agent with DFH Real Estate. Kangas has been selling homes in the Capital Region for eight years, and says the general rule of moving every seven years doesn’t apply here. A lot of people live in their homes for decades in retirement-rich Victoria and Esquimalt, which can lead to a build-up of a lot of clutter when it comes time to make a move. It’s important that no surprises crop up when the house goes on the market, Kangas says. “I definitely recommend doing a pre-inspection,” she says. Dealing with old oil tanks in the yard is always a worry, and anything that would make the house unliveable – like a roof in need of replacement – can be identified this way, but

Moving into a smaller place forces homeowners to declutter while selecting only essential furniture pieces. renovations aren’t always necessary. “It’s usually not worth putting any money into the house, unless it’s something that needs to be done that would impede the sale of the home,” she says. “It’s more realistic to just price the home where it needs to be, reflecting any work it might need.”
Tearing out walls or replacing the kitchen might be a bit much, but a coat of paint and a professional’s eye can do wonders to interested buyers, says Brenda Russell, realtor with Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty. Russell has been licensed for 24 years, and has seen what a little bit of staging can do.
“Doing a colour consultation or even just changing a few pieces of furniture around…I always encourage even an hour’s consultation,” she says. “It doesn’t cost very much, and then you’ve got a ‘wow’ experience.” Russell says that while professional help can be invaluable, every house

is unique and no house is going to be perfect. Both Kangas and Russell agree that the important thing is to take the process one step at a time, and not be afraid to call if help is needed. “It’s about gently getting started, and gently working through the process,” says Kangas. editor@saanichnews.com

Shark tooth fairy would earn a good living Natasha Ewing Tales from the tide pool
Sharks need protection for species to survive In light of Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week, it felt timely to discuss the prehistoric cartilaginous creatures. Since the feature film Jaws was released, sharks have been stereotyped by media as man-eating killers and have intrinsically been feared. While Shark Week 2014 was full of exaggerated images of Megalodon and far-fetched thrillers like Sharkageddon; sharks are remarkable and their true beauty is known to few. Sharks are part of the class chondrichthyes, meaning their skeleton is made of cartilage, rather than bone. There are hundreds of species of sharks that range in size from only 17 centimeters to 12 metres in length. Sharks are found in every ocean region around the world, including off the coast of British Columbia, and are known to exist to depths of 2,000 metres. I distinctly remember loosing my first tooth – and boy was I excited when the tooth fairy left a shiny dollar under my pillow. If ocean
tooth fairies existed, they would have a full time job with sharks, which have up to 30,000 teeth over their lifetime. Sharks have rows of teeth, which lay in a groove on the inside of their jaw. When a tooth (or teeth) is lost, another tooth from the row below simply pops up, almost like a conveyor belt. Depending on the species, sharks can loose teeth anywhere from every eight days to every couple of months. Just like other animals, the shape of the shark’s teeth reflect their food choices; for example, sharks with flatter teeth use them for crushing shelled animals, whereas sharks with sharp-serrated teeth use theirs to tear through the tough skin of larger fish and mammals. When sharks are filmed in the wild they are almost always moving. In fact, most sharks move at approximately eight km/h, but can increase their speed upwards of 19 km/h when hunting. If sharks don’t constantly move they can sink. Most fish in the ocean have something called a swim-bladder, which is a gas-filled organ that allows fish to change their buoyancy and remain at a specific depth without swimming. Sharks do not have swim-bladders and instead they have a very large liver filled with a special oil called squalene. However, the liver is still often too heavy and thus most sharks must continually swim to stay buoyant. Senses are an important part of survival and sharks are no exception. Like many other ocean animals, sharks have a keen sense of smell,
sight and sound. Sharks have such a keen sense of smell that they can even determine the direction from which it came. A shark’s sense of sight is often debated. While sharks have relatively good eyesight and some unique adaptations, it is unconfirmed how much they actually use their eyesight in hunting compared to their other senses. While testing a shark’s sense of hearing is difficult, it is thought they can hear prey from miles away. Furthermore, like many other fish, sharks can detect vibrations in the water. Sharks however, have a “sixth sense” that is, sharks can detect electromagnetic fields that are produced by living creatures, using specialized electroreceptor organs called, ampullae

of Lorenzini. Sharks have the greatest electrical sensitivity of any animal and use this special sense to find prey, orient themselves and possibly even navigate throughout the ocean based on the Earth’s magnetic field. Sharks brood their young
in three different ways. Some species bare live young, others nourish the embryo internally, while other species lay eggs. “Egg laying” sharks (and skates) produce a special pouch, called a Mermaid’s Purse that protects the eggs until they hatch. Mermaid’s
purses have a leathery texture and resemble dried up seaweed; they can be found washed up on the beach, so keep an eye out for them. Although sharks often don’t get a lot of empathy, they are remarkable animals and have outlived many species over the last 400 million years. As scientists continue to study and understand these creatures, I hope the public’s perception of them will continue to change for the positive – from feared to loved. There is still much to learn about sharks and protecting the remaining populations is crucial for their survival. To learn more about these sea giants and to share your voice for their protection, check out the following links: sharkwater. com and fin-free.com. ••• Combining her passions for education and the marine ecosystem Natasha Ewing inspires K-12 teachers and students to incorporate hands-on experiential ocean science into the classroom for Ocean Networks Canada.

Sticker price: Price as tested $70,620 ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

The 2015 TLX has a starting MSRP for the four-cylinder engine at $34,990. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner in Bellingham. Situated in the harbour area it overlooks the marina and has views of the San Juan Islands. Great service, great fare (especially the seafood), all tables come with a view and the prices are very reasonable, compared to Vancouver. An after-meal stroll around the picturesque marina walkway also allows you to ogle hundreds of boats and yachts up close. near the skiing area.
