SURVEY SAYS …
Cranbrook streets are not the worst Local streets get a few votes in BCAA survey, but nothing like Westside Road near West Kelowna
ARNE PETRYSHEN Townsman Staff
It’s probably no surprise that the potholed and crumbling roads of Cranbrook had at least some votes in BCAA’s Worst Roads Survey. It may
also be a surprise that none of Cranbrook’s roads actually made the top-10 list. Mayor Wayne Stetski took a moment from Monday’s council meeting to really emphasize that point.
“I’ll probably say it twice,” Stetski said. “But no streets in Cranbrook made the top 10 in BCAA’s list.” Every year BCAA takes their list of members complaints and makes a top 10
list which it then releases. While Cranbrook was not in the top ten list, it was not spared complaints, as BCAA also releases a list of all the streets in B.C. that had complaints. Sure enough, Cran-
brook makes that list. “They’ve identified some roads that need some work,” noted Wayne Staudt, the chief administrative officer for the city. “The good news is we have pretty much fixed
all the suggestions that they had: 11th Avenue South, 30th Avenue North, 4th Street North, 11th Street South and Cobham Avenue West.”

Local writer finalist in literacy contest TREVOR CRAWLEY
A Vancouver-based non-profit company is raising awareness on literacy rates by holding a letter-writing contest that has a Cranbrook resident as one of the finalists. Cara Carmelo’s creative entry to the Literacy is Life contest is in the top-five from entries across the province. Her submission explains what literacy means to her, how it has impacted
her life and what she’s done to increase literacy in Cranbrook. Organized by Decoda Literacy Solutions based out of Vancouver, the contest is part of a province-wide campaign to raise awareness on the importance of literacy, create a new, modern understanding of literacy and raise funds for community-based literacy programs across B.C.

Cranbrook looks to social media for info distribution ARNE PETRYSHEN
Cranbrook will soon be making the jump to the digital world of social media thanks to a new Social Media Governance policy. The city won’t be making too much of a leap though, as the policy deals only with “emergency information distribution.” The policy will help the municipality to get time-sensitive information out to the public in a timely manner. City staff noted that social media is often better at disseminating information quickly that traditional media sources. The move was
prompted by the July 2012 windstorm which knocked out the city’s website as well as the radio station. Staff noted that the radio’s Facebook page was the only avenue the city had of getting important information out to residents. “This came out of the fire department,” Mayor Wayne Stetski said. “Again it’s just recognizing the reality of the day, where social media is the fastest, most effective way to get out information. It’s designed, at this point, to be a one-way passing of information.”

IH asks for patience Tow nsman S taff
The East Kootenay Regional Hospital is seeing increases in visits as a result of recent losses of family physicians in the community. “We recognize that the emergency department may be the only option for local residents who do not have a family physician at this time,” said Grace Kucey, from Interior Health Communications. Kucey said that this means the emergency department will be busier than normal at times and waits will be longer in some cases. Interior Health is asking for the public’s patience and understanding. As is always the case, patients will be assessed and treated according to how urgent their needs are, with the most serious
cases being the top priority. Kucey noted Interior Health is grateful for the dedicated emergency department physicians and staff who are committed to providing care to all patients. She said all patients who present to the emergency department will be assessed and treated as required. In order to minimize pressure on the hospital’s emergency department, Kucey has the following suggestions if you are unsure about the care you need: • Call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 (24 hour service), if you are unsure about your need to go to the emergency department. • Note the weekend and holiday hours of your local pharmacy/drug store, and ensure your prescriptions are up to date.
“People requiring emergency care should not hesitate in calling 9-1-1 or presenting to the emergency department,” she said. Interior Health also continues to participate in the Cranbrook Supply Task Force recruitment group, which is dedicated to finding new family physicians for the community. “We applaud the East Kootenay Division of Family Practice, the General Practice Services Committee, the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce, the City of Cranbrook, the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District and the College of the Rockies for their involvement in these efforts, including the recent successful recruitment of new physician, Dr. Karen Fordham, to Cranbrook,” Fucey said.
Northern mines await Mount Polley probe Tom Fletcher Black Press
The company developing the Morrison copper-gold mine near Smithers remains confident it can complete the project, despite a decision by the B.C. government to suspend its environmental assessment until an investigation into the Mount Polley mine dam breach is completed. Pacific Booker Minerals “will comply with all the recommendations made by the independent engineering investigation and review panel and will construct and operate the Morrison mine in compliance with industry best practices, using proven technology and in full compliance with all permit requirements,” company director Erik Tornquist said in a statement. Environment Minister Mary Polak and Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett announced the suspension this week. It’s the second setback the province has handed to Pacific Booker, which won a court decision last December after its permit was refused by the B.C. government. Bennett said the Morrison tailings pond was one of the issues in the court case, and he and Polak decided it was in the best interests of the public and the

mine proponent to wait. The Lake Babine First Nation intervened in the case, and its land claim as well as concerns about long-term effects on water quality in Morrison Lake were cited in the decision to withhold the mine permit. Three mine engineering experts have been given until Jan. 31 to report their findings on the cause of the Aug. 4 tailings dam breach at Mount Polley near Williams Lake. Mount Polley owner Imperial Metals is nearing completion of its Red Chris project near Iskut in the remote northwest corner of B.C. It has its permits but the company has agreed to another independent review of its tailings pond design and construction before putting it into service. A group of Tahltan Nation elders blocked a road to the Red Chris project after the Mount Polley incident. “Red Chris should not be held up,” Bennett said. “There is a roadblock there now and the company is currently working around it, and also having I think some pretty fruitful discussions with the Tahltan Central Council. “But they’re proceeding. Their mine is almost built, and they are hopeful that they will be able to provide the independent information or verification that the tailings dam at Red Chris is designed and built properly, such that the Tahltan Central Council will be satisfied they have the insurance and the mine will be able to proceed.”

Bears congregate at Art in the Park this Saturday Tre vor Cr awley Daily Townsman
Normally, bears aren’t welcome at a picnic. However, that won’t apply on Saturday for a Teddy Bear Picnic at Rotary Park, which is the second annual instalment of Art in the Park from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. The Cranbrook and District Arts Council has been selling teddy bears as a fundraiser for the last few months, and now the time has come to dress them up for judging. Awards will be handed out to the most creatively-dressed bears in categories of 14 years and up (individuals and groups), 14 years and younger (individuals and groups) and the best business. Cranbrook businesses have also participated in a teddy bear hide and seek, displaying furry characters for discovery. Clues were available at the arts council gallery and prizes will also be awarded for completed lists. “There will a winner announced for the hide and seek, there will be winners announced for the best-dressed bears,” said Jenny Humphrey, who is an organizer for the event. Running concurrently to the Teddy Bear Picnic will be other events, such as live music from Leather Britches featuring Angus McDonald, Rod Wilson and Will Nicholson. Maddie Keiver and Doug Mitchell will also be on hand for musical performances. “We’ll all get a chance to sing Teddy Bear Picnic, no doubt,” laughed Humphrey. The kids will have access to face-painting, and there will also be henna demonstrations, a form of body art that uses henna dye for temporary tattoos. Just down the street from the park at the art gallery will be a twice-loved art sale.
The bears will be on display. Go vote for your faves this Satuday at Rotary Park in Cranbrook.
“We’ll have all sorts of things,” said Humphrey. “We’ve got numerous frames, some arts supplies and twiceloved art, so lots of paintings, prints and things that haven’t sold during the year, or prints and paintings that people have donated to us to sell.” Proceeds raised will go towards an arts council project fund.

City looks to social media Cranbrook roads aren’t Continued from page 1
Stetski noted that all the normal ways of communicating will still be there. Coun. Diana J. Scott said she thought it was great. “I think having this a one-way relieves us of potential FOIP liability and that kind of stuff,” she said, referring to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act which public bodies must adhere to. “At the same time it gets the information out there, and it gets the proper information out there. Because if
something happens everybody is on social media yaking about it, but half the time it’s all rumour, conjecture, speculation, it’s not good information. So if the city can get out information about traffic or floods or traffic or whatever, it’s the proper information that’s going to circulate and not just speculation and rumour.” Coun. Sharon Cross said one important point to be made is about the catalyst for creating this policy came out of the windstorm of 2012. She said this gives
the city another avenue of communication through the Facebook page. Stetski noted the important last paragraph in the report. “This is the first step towards the full fledged social media governance policy with the City of Cranbrook, and it will allow staff to work through the planning, set-up, maintenance and records management components of social media and further explore its future use in ensuring administration can meet all of its legal and legislative requirements.”
The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is seeking information concerning illegal dumping that took place on Houle Road near Kimberley. Sometime between Aug. 8 and Aug. 16, somebody dumped a quantity of dirt, wood, cement and garbage at the 1-km mark of Houle Road. The garbage included old computer keyboards, a Singer sewing machine, books and other debris. This type of behaviour affects everybody in the area, since it can damage our environment and it costs money to clean up the site. Anyone found dumping illegally may face substantial fines. If anybody has information about the Houle Road incident or any other illegal dumping, they are asked to call the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1 877 952-7277 or FrontCounter BC in Cranbrook at 250 426-1766.

Those repairs include things like pothole and skim patching. He said there are still some roads that need some major work, including extensive road rebuilds and work on drainage systems. “What engineering has done here is try to identify when we will be getting to some of those major road improvements,” he said. Staudt said major work on 11th Avenue is scheduled for 2015 to 2017, 30th Avenue North is 2018, and 4th Street North is 2015. For instance, while the manager of Public Works listed that 11th Avenue South has had potholes patched, it is awaiting adequate funding for the waterline replacement and storm system upgrades before it can proceed on three sections between 2015 and 2017. In the same line, 4th Street North is awaiting adequate funding for the water main, sewer main replacements and storm system upgrades. “Then you look at some of the other ones, with exception of 6th Street North, which is being done right now, and Industrial Road 2, which is also being done in 2014,” he said, adding that the other ones are on a much longer waiting period — some right out to 2026. “Some roads will just have to wait until our financing is available to address those other roads,” he said.

In Cranbrook, work is underway on Sixth Street North — going deep. In the Worst Roads Survey, 11th Avenue South received 13 votes for potholes and crumbling pavement, while 30th Avenue North had seven votes and 4th Street North had four. A number of the other roads received two or a single vote, but the problem cited for every road was potholes and crumbling pavement. And the winners are: 1. Silver Star Road, Vernon (Potholes/ crumbling pavement) 2. Westside Road, 40 km north of West Kelowna (Potholes/crumbling pavement) 3. Cosens Bay Road, Coldstream, 14 km south of Vernon (Pedes-
trian/cycling safety) 4. Westside Road (again!), 17 km north of West Kelowna (Potholes/crumbling pavement) 5. George Massey Tunnel, Richmond (Traffic Congestion) 6. McKenzie Avenue, Victoria (Traffic Congestion) 7. Patullo Bridge, Surrey (Traffic Congestion) 8. Maple Crescent, Maple Ridge (Pedestrian/cycling safety) 9. Westside Road (yet again!), About 35 km west of Vernon (Potholes/crumbling pavement) 10. Island Hwy, Malahat (Traffic Congestion)

Literacy contest has Cranbrook finalist Continued from page 1
Carmelo learned of the contest through working alongside the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy and decided to submit an entry. Since she was young, reading and writing has always been important to her. “Literacy has been really important in my life and I can remember the first time I realized what it was,” said Carmelo. “I think literacy is a key to life and having this more meaningful existence—you’re able to contribute to society and get so much more
back. I feel without literacy, you’re kind of living in the dark.” Written in the form of a love letter, Carmelo explains how she began to appreciate literacy at a young age, starting with the Berenstain Bears and Robert Munsch books. That set the foundation for understanding the subtext for novels like the Life of Pi and the literacy skills to write her thesis in college. “It’s so important that kids get immersed in that early, so they can really enjoy it,” said Carmelo. “As a teacher, I teach older students in middle school and high
school who don’t enjoy reading and it’s kind of a shame that they’ve missed out on getting hooked on it early.” Increasing literacy rates impacts all areas of everyday life, including health care, crime rates, employment and economic status. According to Decoda Literacy Solutions, 40 per cent of B.C. adults don’t have the literacy skills needed for reading a newspaper, filling out a work application form or reading a map. The Literacy for Life contest winner will be announced in September.

Orphaned grizzly released back into the wild as part of pilot rehab project S t e ve n C hua Canadian Press
VANCOUVER — An orphaned grizzly cub named Littlefoot has been released back into the wild in southeastern British Columbia, part of a pilot project aimed at saving bears who have come out on the losing end of interactions with humans. Conservation officers from the Ministry of Environment found the yearling severely undernourished this spring in an area where a bear was shot dead last year, leading authorities to believe it was his mother that was killed. Littlefoot hibernated alone through last winter, emerging emaciated this spring. In June, weighing just 22 kilograms, he was sent to the Northern Lights Wildlife Society, near Smithers, B.C. Three months and more than 40 kilograms later — almost triple what he weighed when he arrived — he was released in a remote area near Fernie on Tuesday. “We had no problems with him. He settled in really well and showed no different behaviour than the other bears that we had in our care,’’ said Angelika Langen, the co-founder and manager of the project. “He was good with the caretaker and quite confident.’’ Like all grizzly graduates of the rehabilitation program, Littlefoot will wear a satellite collar for 18 months so his progress can be tracked. Since it began in 2007, 13 grizzly cubs have been rehabilitated and released back into the wild. The chances for an orphaned cub without some help are

not good. “They either get shot or left out in the wild to fend for themselves, which means they either starve to death or they become prey for a predator,’’ Langen said. Ministry of Environment statistics show in B.C., 127 grizzlies have been killed by humans over the past three and a half years, not including sport hunting kills. The B.C. Natural Resources Ministry said grizzly bears have been designated a species of special concern nationally by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, though they are not endangered in the province. Government biologists estimate about 15,000 grizzlies live in the westernmost province, which is home to about a quarter of the remaining North American population. Only Alaska has more. Grizzly bears are also listed as threatened under the U.S. Federal Endangered Species Act. The bears in Langen’s program became orphaned after their parents were killed either in vehicle accidents or by humans who shot the animals in self defence. Though the project has been running for years, it is still in pilot stage because it’s unclear whether grizzlies raised by humans fare well in the wild. So far, Langen said the results are encouraging. Radio-collar tracking has shown only three of the 13 bruins released in the past seven years have died. They’re tracked for 18 months, at which point the collars are designed to fall
off to prevent the bear from choking as it grows. Tests of dung samples also bode well, she said. “The bears we have raised in human care have no problems finding the natural food that they need,’’ Langen said. “Within a couple of days they have it all figured out.’’ Littlefoot almost immediately started looking for food, she said. But the ultimate test of whether bears raised by humans succeed is whether they go on to have a family of their own. “From a scientific point of view, that would be the ultimate proof that a bear that has been raised in human care can adapt well enough to survive in the wild and then even reproduce.’’ Unfortunately, the wildlife society has not been able to document any offspring. They’ve only had two females and lost contact with both in the wild, one because of technical difficulties and the other because of inaccessible terrain, Langen said. One major challenge for the program is ensuring cubs do not become dependent on humans. To that end, each is assigned a caregiver and only that person interacts with the bruin. Any other interaction with humans, such as a veterinarian visit, is designed to ensure the bears remain afraid of humans. “They get chased, they get poked — it’s not something pleasant,’’ Langen said. On average, each bear costs between $3,000 and $4,000 to rehabilitate.

Endless summer of our discontent
A
slan is coming! Aslan is coming! I mean, Vince Ready is coming! In the enchanted land of Narnia — I mean, B.C. — it was endless summer, just like the Beach Boys compilation album. It was endless summer, but never vacation — for the parents were restless, anxious and angry. The children were bored and unfulfilled. That’s endless summer for you. It’s like endless winter without Christmas, only different. When summer stretches into September, into October, into — what’s that you say? Possibly November? — that’s not summer vacation. That’s a long period of unemployment. When a teachers’ strike/government lockout begins at the end of the school year, one would think it would be easy to forget about it, as summer vacation begins. But no one really did, neither parents nor students. “How will they resolve the issue before September,” we asked plaintively. “What will happen if they don’t? How will it affect our kids if school doesn’t begin in (two/three/four) months? What contingency plans can we make? OVM (Oy Vey ist Mir)! “The two sides are so far apart. The bitterness, mutual distrust and dislike goes back so many years. Is this the end of pub-
lic education as we know it? Oh woe!” But, what’s this? A rumour of hope! Mediator Vince Ready has agreed to monitor the situation between teachers and the Province, and will commence full mediation if signs indicate it could be a productive step. Oh my goodness! Just like the arrival of the Barry Christlike lion Aslan herCoulter alded the long-delayed arrival of spring in the enchanted land of Narnia, the leonine mediator is Ready to step in and conVince both sides to reach a middle ground of mutual satisfaction, bringing sweet, sweet autumn to the enchanted land of B.C. All through these evenings of endless summer, phones are ringing, and people are whispering “Have you heard? Vince Ready is coming! At last!” Vince Ready is the greatest labour arbitrator this country has ever had. He has been involved in settling thousands of disputes. He understands both the union side and the management side. He is the toughest, the most sympathetic, the smartest, the wisest, the quickest witted. He is both the pen and the sword. Huzzah! He thinks outside the box. He builds his own box. Negotiators for the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association will sit in the box
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
that he builds, like cats. They will purr at his suggestions for settling this most acrimonious of labour disputes. All the bells in B.C. will ring! Every dog will bark! Vince Ready has seen it all. He has been settling labour disputes as an independent arbitrator and mediator since 1982. He knows all the tricks! Hip Hip Hurrah! He will convince the BCTF that their contracts must be somewhat in line with other unions. He will convince the government that teaching is a profession unlike any other, and must be treated with respect, with appropriate funding to deal with class composition, etc. How can he do this? He can do this because he’s a jolly good fellow! The parents are saying, in those hushed endless summer evening phone calls, that if Vince Ready can’t do it, no one can. But no pressure, eh, Mr. Ready? Now is the summer of our discontent made glorious autumn by Vince Ready. Children will pack up their school supplies, and head gladly off to school come Sept. 2. Teachers will get the help they require and the wages they deserve. The government will get back to governing. The rest of us will get on with our lives with all the myriad stressful details, all the while grateful to our fabulous public education system and its teachers, administrators and staff for helping prepare our children so well for the rest of their lives.

Opinion/features Being Christian and asking questions
S
ome people say that Christians shouldn’t question their faith. They claim that our faith was revealed to us, and our only choice is to believe fully what we have been told. If we have doubts, then we’re just not trying hard enough. Believers who ask questions are treated as if they were second–class Christians, as if we don’t have enough faith. If there is a conflict between what the Bible says and what modern science tells us, the most extreme form of this attitude suggests that we must believe the Bible and ignore what modern knowledge has learned. If there is any conflict at all, it is to be resolved in favour of the Bible, understood in its most literal way. Creationists, for example, say that Genesis explains that the world was created in six days, and God rested on the seventh. According to them, any other way of explaining how this universe came into existence is unfaithful. In particular, evolutionary science must be resisted everywhere. Another example is the teaching that Jesus was born of a virgin. Even if it doesn’t make sense intellectually (and it doesn’t), you must accept it by faith. It won’t come as a surprise that they consider all other religions to be false, since God has only been revealed to the world in one way. If you don’t accept this version of the truth, they say, you will be condemned to an eternity of fierce punishment. And it goes on and one. These people
tell us that their version of the truth is the only way to understand it. They’re sorry it’s so hard, but they are telling it in love so that we may change our ways, and believe as they do. When we do that, then we will be saved. It will come as no surprise that I disagree. To be a Christian never means that we turn off our brains. Truth is truth, no matter where it may come from. Science Rev. Yme and theology, and all the Woensdregt other avenues of inquiry, have the potential to lead us to truth. Being a Christian has to do with learning to understand what is important and significant in life. Brian McLaren puts it this way his marvellous book, “Generous Orthodoxy”: “To be a Christian in a generously orthodox way is not to claim to have the truth captured, stuffed and mounted on the wall. It is rather to be in a loving community of people who are seeking the truth on the road of mission, and who have been launched on the quest by Jesus, who, with us, guides us still.” To be a Christian, first of all, is to “be in a loving community of people”. Christian is communal through and through. The Bible knows nothing of solitary Christians. “No man is an island,” says the great poet John Donne. We live and work together, seeking to “love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and also to love our neighbours as ourselves,” as the great commandment puts it. It’s not just me and God. It’s you and me and you
and you and you and God and you. To be Christian is to be in community with others. Secondly, to be Christian is to be in a community of people “who are seeking the truth”. We are always on the way. Life is not static and fixed. Christian life is dynamic and ongoing. We continue to grow in our knowledge and in the way we live out our faithful lives on earth. Christians are always seeking to discern where God is active in the world today. We add our own voices to the testimony of those who have gone before us. We ask questions and seek new ways of telling the truth as we discern it. One of my favourite ways of talking about Christian faith is that “Christian faith is not about finding the answer. It’s about learning to ask the right questions.” It’s a journey. It’s a process of growing and learning and changing and evolving. We are on a pilgrimage through life, walking with others, humbly seeking the truth wherever we may find it. As we do so, asking questions is a necessary and critical part of how we live. When we ask questions, we continue to learn and grow. When we ask questions, we imply that others have answers that we may not be aware of. We live together with others who know something of the truth. When we ask questions, we open ourselves again to the mystery of life, and seek to embrace truth and compassion wherever we find it. Washington for approval, he submerged himself into library work. He spent every free moment consulting books lists and author biographies, until he had completed a list of 1,500 titles covering the widest range of subjects possible. The government quickly approved his designs, and built 285 mobile libraries. Publishers agreed to provide books at cost. The mobile libraries were stocked and sent out to camps, hospitals, and naval vessels. From dense scholarly tomes to basic readers, the libraries became a bright spot amid the horrors of war. “No estimate can be made of the good it is doing” wrote one officer in his weekly report. Of course these libraries suffered the same problems as all other libraries. Books were returned late, frequently damaged, or not at all. A large number of books went missing with discharged hospital patients and deserters. The Civil War ended in 1865, with the surrender of the Confederate Army. The mobile libraries that hadn’t been abandon, stuck in mud, stolen, or blown to smithereens during the war were taken apart, with the collections being sent to military bases and schools. Before the war ended, one of the biggest users of the libraries were former slaves. Since learning to read was previously a death sentence, the former slaves made great use of the mobile libraries. One camp chaplain reported that they stay up all night sounded out words and reading aloud from the primary spelling books and readers. Although this practice prevented the entire regiment from getting any sleep, not one soldier ever complained. Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

12th annual Cranbrook Mower Nationals gear up for a good time this Saturday

The 12th annual Cranbrook Mower Nationals are geared up and ready to roar this Saturday at Mission View Moving and Storage. Pete Durning is the organizer of the event, which has come a long way from its humble beginnings on an old dirt road as a friendly wager between two good buddies. “[My neighbour] was going by on his lawn mower one day and I was out on mine,” Durning said. “I was like, ‘Dude, we’ve got to race.’ “We took off and he had this fast garden tractor, John Deere-type thing, and he won that year.” Next thing you know, Durning was making modifications to his wheels in hopes of tak-
ing home the inaugural title at the very first Cranbrook Mower Nationals. The first running featured four racers and 20 spectators. In 2013, 17 racers attended the event with a crowd Durning estimated at close to 700. “It’s just progressed and grown,” Durning said Thursday afternoon as he overlooked his homegrown mower race track. “What I really want to do here is have a community party. “You bring your neighbours, your parents, your kids. Everybody get together and have a good time…and just enjoy that we live in this great little area. There are a lot of good people here. They rarely get together. Getting them together is a great thing.” Races get underway
at 4 p.m. and the night is capped off with live music, featuring Cranbrook’s Brotherhood of Lost Souls and a variety of other live musical acts including the organizer’s niece, Shay Durning. Racers can check in and register anytime after 12 p.m. Entry into the races is free and admission for spectators is also free. Well-supervised children are welcome to take in the races, but after 9 p.m. the event becomes an adult-only affair. Durning has a 15-passenger shuttle bus that will ferry fans from the races back into Cranbrook or up to Kimberley to ensure everyone gets home safe at the end of the night. “[It’s] the most amazing end-of-summer party you’ve ever seen,” Durning said. “Period.”
Giguere retires after 16 NHL seasons Pat Gr aham Associated Press
DENVER — The goaltender known as “Jiggy’’ is stepping away from the net. Jean-Sebastien Giguere announced his retirement Thursday after 16 NHL seasons in which he won 262 games, a Conn Smythe Trophy and a Stanley Cup championship. The Colorado Avalanche say Giguere made his decision in Quebec while with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada hockey team. He’s part owner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League squad. “His achievements speak for themselves, from winning the Stan-
ley Cup to winning the Conn Smythe, Jiggy was always a top-notch goaltender,’’ team executive Joe Sakic said in a statement. “He was also a very important part of our team during the past three seasons, providing veteran leadership and stability in net. We wish him and his family the best of luck.’’ Giguere served as Semyon Varlamov’s backup last season in Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy’s first season behind the bench. The team made it back to the post-season for the first time since 2010. What’s more, Giguere took rookie Nathan MacKinnon under his wing and allowed
the talented teenager to live in the family’s basement all season. The two even car-pooled to games and practices. The 37-year-old Giguere is best known for his time with the Anaheim Ducks. He led the team to two appearances in the Stanley Cup finals, capturing the Conn Smythe Trophy in defeat in 2003 and hoisting the Cup in 2007. The Ducks fans even gave Giguere an ovation after a game in Anaheim, Calif., last April. He skated to centre ice that night with former teammate Teemu Selanne, their clasped hands held aloft. Selanne recently retired after a 21-season NHL
career spent mostly with Anaheim. “For (Selanne) to do that, it’s something that’s very special for me, and something I’ll never forget,’’ Giguere said. Giguere was originally drafted by Hartford with the 13th overall pick 1995 and played eight games with the Whalers in 1996-97. He was the last active player to have suited up for Hartford. A fan favourite wherever he went, Giguere also played for Calgary and Toronto. Giguere played in 597 regular season games and faced 16,325 shots in 33,719 minutes. He finished his career with a 2.53 goals-against average and 38 shutouts.
U.S. Open tennis matches set; Bouchard to face Govortsova R achel Cohen Associated Press
NEW YORK — Twotime defending champion Serena Williams will face American teen Taylor Townsend in the first round of the U.S. Open. The 18-year-old
Townsend is a former top-ranked junior who reached the third round at the French Open this year. She got into her first U.S. Open main draw with a wild card. Williams could play Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the
semifinals after the draw was held Thursday. Second-seeded Simona Halep and fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska are in the other half. Halep could meet five-time major champ Maria Sharapova in the quarter-finals.
Seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., opens against Olga Govortsova of Belarus. Bouchard, who has advanced to at least the semifinals of the other three Grand Slams this year but has struggled so far on hard-
court, could meet Kvitova in the quarter-finals. Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., opens against Nara Kurumi, while Toronto’s Sharon Fichman faces Radwanska. Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka could
meet in one semifinal on the men’s side. Second-seeded Roger Federer and fourth-seeded David Ferrer are in the other half. Djokovic could face Andy Murray in the quarter-finals. Fifth seed Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont.,
will face a qualifier in the first round and could face Wawrinka in the quarter-finals. Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil faces Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., meets No. 32 Joao Sousa of Portugal.

NEWS Scientists finally find a good MERS animal model, but it’s a mixed blessing Helen Br answell CANADIAN PRESS
TORONTO — Scientists working to solve the mysteries of the MERS coronavirus have finally filled a gaping hole — with a very tiny animal. U.S. researchers have reported that marmosets are a good animal model for the infection, suffering from the same symptoms humans do when they contract the Middle East respiratory syndrome virus. The researchers reported their work Thursday in the journal PLoS Pathogens. (PLoS is short for Public Library of Science.) “At the moment it’s the best disease model that we have for MERS,” one of the senior authors, Dr. Heinz Feldmann, said in an interview.
Animal models are crucial in research, helping scientists tease out how diseases attack the body and chart the damage they do. They are also critical in efforts to develop drugs or treatments for disease, which must be tried on animals before they are tested in people. But in order for an animal model to work, the animal in question must experience the same type of illness as humans do. And that has been a problem with the MERS virus. Though it is known the virus infects camels — and they probably infect people — the dromedaries don’t get noticeably sick when they are infected. Even if they did, the animals are too large to work with
easily in high containment laboratories. Rhesus macaques can be infected with the virus, but they don’t experience the severe disease people get. Hamsters and ferrets, which are commonly used in animal studies, also don’t work for MERS. Researchers at the University of Iowa and elsewhere have been working on developing a mouse model for the disease. But work reported earlier this year suggested the first effort also experienced a similar problem; the mice didn’t become sick or lose weight. Now scientists from the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’s facility in Hamilton, Mont., say their work with marmosets show the tiny primates
A white-eared marmoset. do develop illness that mirrors what is seen in humans infected with MERS. Meanwhile, work continues on other options. Next up are pigs,
Patient at Calgary hospital stole transit bus parked out front C ANADIAN PRESS
CALGARY — A man is in custody after a transit shuttle bus parked in front of a Calgary hospital was taken for a ride. Police say the driver had left the bus idling in front of Foothills Hospital on Wednesday while he went for a break. They say a patient jumped on board and drove away. Officers were able to stop the bus just a few blocks away. There were no pas-
sengers on the bus at the time. A man has been arrested and charged with theft. Staff Sgt. Paul Wozney says there was no issue with how the bus was being driven. “Any time you have a stolen vehicle on the road there certainly is a public safety issue associated to it,” he said. “In this case the driving pattern seemed to be normal, or what would be viewed as normal.”
Manitoba bans feeding deer, elk to keep out chronic wasting disease C ANADIAN PRESS
WINNIPEG — Manitoba has extended a ban on hunters feeding deer, elk and moose in western Manitoba to better control the threat of chronic wasting disease. Richard Davis of Manitoba Conservation says chronic wasting disease is common in Saskatchewan and southeastern Alberta, but so far has not been detected in Manitoba. It’s typically spread animal-to-animal through saliva, feces and urine. Davis said if anyone uses anything to attract the animals, they can be charged. He says the original ban under the Wildlife Act was first put in place in 2003. CWD is a fatal disease of the central nervous system of deer and elk, and while there’s no
evidence it can be spread to humans, Davis said the World Health Organization recommends people don’t eat the meat of an animal with CWD. “The communities we talked to, the hunters we talked to, they’re very much in favour of the work we’re doing to prevent the spread of the disease,” Davis said, adding subsistence hunting is not widely practised in western Manitoba. The theory behind a ban on feeding is that infected animals probably transmit the disease through animal-to-animal contact and/or contamination of feed or water sources with saliva or bodily waste material, possibilities which increase greatly when animals gather at a single source of supplied food.
which the group believes will be both a good model for human disease and much cheaper than marmosets.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) You could be dealing with someone’s anger that seems to be directed at you. You might not be in the right place to talk, or perhaps you just don’t have time to deal with this issue. You might surprise yourself with how fast you are able to avoid this problem. Tonight: Get intense. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might want to screen your calls, but it will be better to answer the phone and handle an awkward issue. You could see someone’s anger evolve into rage. Try not to react, as today won’t be the best time to express your feelings. Tonight: Happiest at home. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You could be at the point of losing your patience most of the day. You’ll want to clear up a money matter, but the other parties involved seem to be relatively uninterested in achieving the same goal. Let go of this issue for now. Tonight: Accept
an invitation to join your pals. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You might want to act quickly in order to complete an important matter before the situation becomes even more difficult. Be aware of what needs to happen between you and a loved one. An older person could be unpredictable. Tonight: Make it your treat. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Whatever ails you early in the day will be long gone by this evening. Try to clear up a personal issue, no matter what it takes; otherwise, you could find it difficult to detach and see things clearly. Tonight: Get into the moment with a loved one. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You might feel out of sorts at first, but you’ll relax once you start dealing with friends. Settle an issue with a loved one. This person is likely to become erratic if you don’t find the time to relate or make the right decision. Tonight: Not to be found! LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Someone close to you whom you deal with regularly could
Tundra
shake up the status quo. This person would like you to gain a better grasp on your finances. The problems that arise could play a major role in preventing greater closeness between you. Tonight: Christen the weekend well. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your anger might be quick to surface. Be careful if sarcasm becomes the norm. Pull back and see what your expectations are with a certain situation that seems to be out of your control. Discipline this behavior and use it more positively. Tonight: All eyes turn to you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Someone will feel the need to have a private chat with you. Consider how much you value this relationship before you decide whether to follow through. Emphasize what is positive for you as well. Tonight: Meet a favorite person at a new spot. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Others could be more challenging and independent than usual. Let them do their thing. You might have the opportunity to
start your weekend early. Make spontaneous plans to drop in on a dear friend. Tonight: Do whatever will make you smile from ear to ear. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll be able to move through your errands and to-dos with ease. You also will need to return a call to an irate elder or boss. Stay open-minded. At some point, this person will be able to hear how ridiculous his or her words sound. Tonight: The only place to be is out. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Your feelings might slow you down. You might encounter someone and suddenly realize that he or she seems to be very angry. This person might direct this frustration at you, but try to engage this person in conversation anyway. Tonight: Stay easygoing. BORN TODAY Actor Richard Armitage (1971), author Ray Bradbury (1920), musician John Lee Hooker (1917) ***

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Here’s my problem: 400-pound barbells dropped in my neighbor’s garage. The young couple who moved in next door describe themselves as “practicing athletes” and pursue this hobby every night for 45 minutes. Each drop of the barbells is deafening and jolts our home. I have talked to “the athletes,” and they don’t care. Their two young daughters follow in their parents’ footsteps by running to ring our doorbell and then dashing back home. They did it so many times that we had to have the doorbell disconnected. We have asked the police to stop the barbell noise, but they tell us people in our subdivision can make noise until 8 p.m. Waiting for this agonizing racket every night, day after day, is enough to make me sick. My nerves are in shreds. When a homeowner receives no help from the police, what can I do? I am an 82-yearold woman, and I have tinnitus, which causes loud ringing in my head. Since my neighbors started their weight-dropping routine, it has become worse. Do you have any suggestions other than suing them? -- Going Deaf in Michigan Dear Michigan: If the noise ordinance says they can drop weights until 8 p.m., you have no cause to sue them over that. However, if your doctor can document that your tinnitus is worse because of the noise emanating from their garage, you may have a case. In the meantime, please do what you can to muffle these sounds. Put a fan in your room. Turn on the television or radio. Wear earplugs. Even better, get out of the house until 8 p.m. Even though it’s late, you aren’t going to be able to relax anyway. So go for a walk with your husband, a friend, a relative or another neighbor. Staying home and fuming helps no one. Dear Annie: I’ve dealt with a family member who has been a sex addict for years. I’ve hinted that a “sex addict” is pretty much the same as a drug addict. If it’s something you hide from loved ones, it can’t be a positive way of life. I’ve noticed the times when this family member seems to be “holding it together” or “keeping it under control.” I don’t think you can be “in control” of an addiction. It shows in the face, attitude, weight loss or gain, social life and daily living. It pains me that I can’t help. I’ve been told by several family members that “you can’t save everybody.” Well, I want to try. What can I do? -- Caring Relative Dear Caring: You can stop making assumptions about addicts and what it means for them to keep things under control. We know you mean well and want to help. Please suggest that your relative contact Sex Addicts Anonymous at saa-recovery.org. You also can look up sex addiction and see how you can be a source of support. Dear Annie: Please tell “Ashamed” that people always look at our faces. If I have a red nose, a black eye, missing front tooth, a facial tattoo or even freckles, that is naturally going to attract their attention. How could anyone miss such things? But once that initial glance is done, people look at and speak to the person. If they see a smile or hear a friendly greeting, it is the person they see and address. My sister had terrible acne as a teen, and her face is a mass of scars and discolorations. She is so outgoing and friendly that she is always the one who greets people and initiates conversation. Guess what? People get beyond the scars within seconds. They know they are dealing with a person. -- Sheboygan, Wis. extends to the advertiser. Fifty-nine percent of Web users agree that online advertising is more believable from a trusted Web site. Online, newspaper Web sites are the dominant local media site in most markets.
3. Targeted: If you want to focus on a particular backyard, advertising in an online newspaper is more personal, and more relevant because it is local. Newspapers also publish a plethora of niche sites (youth, women, movie fans, seniors, are illustrative) for virtually any demographic advertisers could possibly hope to reach. 4. Purchasing power: Sixty-two percent of newspaper
Web site users purchase online compared with 49 percent of general users. Thirty-nine percent of online newspaper users have incomes higher than $75,000; 65 percent own their homes. Fifty percent of online newspaper users have spent more than $500 online in the last six months, and 63 percent of online newspaper users prefer to find out about new products through the Internet.
5. Content: After e-mail, the most preferred Web
content is news, sports, financial information, entertainment news, and shopping – in that order. Sixtytwo percent of Internet users visit online newspapers for local news, compared with 39 percent for the local TV station Web site and 23 percent for the local radio station site. Not even Yahoo! or AOL’s Digital City can top this.
6. Retailers prefer newspaper sites: Sixty-five percent of retailers report that newspaper sites are efficient in assisting them in meeting marketing needs compared with other sites.
7. High profile: Research.net reports that, among top executives (CEO, CIO, CFO or owner/partner), Internet advertising ranked above over all other media measured for: “Where I prefer to find our about new products,” “Where I prefer to receive information about companies,” and “Where modern, up-to-date brands advertise.” At the same time, these early adopters of technology also skew younger than the traditional newspaper audience. Forty percent of online newspaper users are aged 18-35. 8. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns. 9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.
10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message. Newspaper print and online products combined have the highest penetration and most desirable audience of any other local medium. SOURCE: Newspaper Association of America
