PRINCE RUPERT - Come September, Prince Rupert Airport (YPR) passengers will be sheltered from the rain while they wait for the airport bus or their luggage to arrive. Through a Prince Rupert and Port Edward Economic Development Corporation initiative, a new shuttle centre will open Monday, Sept. 8 in the former Greyhound station on Sixth Street. For a number of years, Prince Rupert Airport users have gathered outside of the Highliner Inn for shuttle service.

Band removes Reece as mayor

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Brucejack Gold Mine Project

LAX KW’ALAAMS - An alleged sexual relationship with a senior staff member has resulted in the removal of Garry Reece from his position as Mayor of Lax Kw’alaams. According to the band, a formal complaint “regarding the professional conduct of Mayor Reece” was submitted on July 9. The complainant alleged the relationship had been happening for years and alleged that Reece misused his position as mayor while providing “significant documentary evidence” to support the claim. In a subsequent meeting with council, Reece admitted to the sexual relationship. Band council met on July 29 to review the evidence and hear from both the complainant and Reece, who participated fully, and council voted to petition for his removal from office. “It was a very serious complaint and in this complaint he violated three of the four line items where you are to remove and individual from office and that is failing to uphold the code of conduct, acting dishonestly in his role and failure to remove himself from a conflict of interest situation,” explained Coun. Chris Sankey. “It’s really unfortunate what happened, but we followed the election code to the best of our abilities while making sure that we heard from both parties.” Reece petitioned federal court following his removal, but the motion was dismissed as the judge noted the band process needed to be complete. On Aug. 6, a recently appointed Complaints and Appeal Board upheld the ruling of council to remove Reece. In the ruling, board chair Rudy Kelly noted the board agreed with council. “We believe that Mr. Reece violated conduct rules as noted by council and that, as a role model and representative of the community, his actions have had an adverse effect on council’s ability to function and on the reputation of community, and he showed little accountability and remorse for his actions,” wrote Kelly. The Lax Kw’alaams Band website has since removed the listing of Garry Reece as mayor with the position being filled by John Helin, who receivied the most votes in the last election. The Band also posted a statement on the removal of Reece and background on the decision on its website on Aug. 13. According to Sankey, the decision to go public was based on inaccurate reports being made in the community. “Initially we weren’t going to share this information, we felt that we didn’t need to, but a letter surfaced bearing six councillors signatures on it and it was really misinformed and not true. It was not at all factual. We did have a majority of council at the time and because that letter was defamatory and discrediting us, we went back and got legal opinion on the matter. We were to respond with the information at hand because the hearings were over and the ruling was in place from the complaints board that he did not uphold the code of conduct ... once that letter hit social media and was circulated in the community, I was shown [the letter] by someone not from the community and later received it from our executive secretary after she was instructed to send it out, we had to respond accordingly. That is why we had to share the information,” he said. “I want to be clear that council did not want to share that information ... it was never our intention to show the membership what had taken place, but that forced us into a corner where we had no choice.” Response to the removal of Garry Reece was swift. The same day as the band made the announcement, protesters targeted Lax Kw’alaams band offices both in the community and in Prince Rupert. Photographs sent to the Northern View show boards being put up outside the offices in Lax Kw’alaams, with one board being spraypainted warning: “If entered you will be penalized”. People trying to attend the office in Prince Rupert were told it was closed. Both offices reopened on Friday. In response to concerns raised from the membership, band council has scheduled a community meeting in Lax Kw’alaams on Aug. 21 and in Prince Rupert on Aug. 22. Garry Reece did not return a request for comment.

Haisla chief councillor draws $75,000 salary By Cameron Orr

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - Newly published information showing the remuneration of First Nation political leaders has shown how much Haisla Nation Council members make. The information has been posted online by the federal Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. Chief Councillor Ellis Ross takes a $75,000 salary. Deputy Chief Councillor Taylor Cross, for eight months, earned $21,039.46. Salary among the councillors wasn’t uniform. Henry Amos earned a $41,208.46 salary based on the public disclosure, the highest among the council. That is for 12 months on the council. Russel Ross Jr. and Joanne Ross each earned $37,746.97 for 12 months. Margaret Grant was paid $16,399.91. Godfrey Grant Jr. was paid $15,899.91. Lucille Harms earned $15,399.91. For the shorter term councillors, Willard Grant earned $12,000 even for eight months. Crystal Smith for eight months was paid $25,074.80. A request for clarification on how council remuneration is set was not immediately answered from the Haisla Nation. The salaries do not include expenses, which for the entirety of the council came to $38,301.61.

The salary details were posted on July 31 this year. For comparison, the yearly salary for the District of Kitimat Mayor is currently $29,880. Councillors for the District earn $12,286. Haisla Nation financial statements are also disclosed, showing a 2014 revenue of $46,032,080, with $22,635,438 in expenses, leaving a surplus of $23,396,642. That amount exceeds the budgeted budget shortfall of $295,726 for the year, which is mainly thanks to a far larger than budgeted “other income” line item of 35,339,867. It is not explained in the documents what that income would refer to. The total registered population of the Haisla Nation is 1,812. Of those, 644 are registered as living on reserve. The Haisla also hold $5,778,050 in investments in regional LNG partnerships and regional LNG development joint ventures. Other First Nations governments in the region have yet to file wage disclosures. Based on statements filed so far, salaries among B.C. First Nations ranged from the high of the Snuneymuxw First Nation near Nanaimo, where one councillor was paid $315,000, to the low of the Shackan Indian Band near Spences Bridge and Merritt, where the chief collected $13,000 and the two councillors received $9,100.

Preparing for growth By Shaun Thomas

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - With the Northwest on the verge of an economic boom, the NDP critic for local government came to the region to see what municipalities are doing to prepare and what help they may need. “I have been following quite closely the challenges that have been going on here in Prince Rupert, as well as communities such as Terrace, Kitimat and Port Edward. I want to hear firsthand from those local government about what those challenges are, how they have been trying to mitigate those challenges and what they are planning for so I can help advocate for them,” said Coquitlan-Maillardville MLA Selina Robinson. “Right now I am looking for themes. I am going to three, possibly four communities, and there may be one-off concerns here or there but I am trying to get a sense of themes. I will likely pull out some things and identify what the common challenges are

and see what we can do, along with my colleagues.” During her visit to Prince Rupert, Robinson met with Mayor Jack Mussallem and city manager Robert Long and said she “got a good lesson and grounding” about just how big the projected growth could be. “I know not everything is signed off, but there is incredible potential for growth and that growth will have pros and cons. I want to identify where there are going to be challenges, particularly around housing, and making sure there is a plan in place and people are planning early enough to accommodate the growth that is going to come,” she said. While just beginning meetings with municipal leaders, Robinson said one thing that she has heard is that municipalities can’t accommodate the growth that is to come without support from higher levels of government. “Local governments need to have plans and that takes people, time and resources. You have to be able to pay those people,” she said.

KITIMAT - Presentations introducing communities to the Independent Investigations Office of BC were held across the northwest recently. Investigators were in Kitimat recently speaking to interested community members explaining the history and the role of the organization, which is an independent investigator of police incidents involving serious harm or death. The group is coming up to their second year in operation and came about from recommendations following some high profile police cases, including the death of Robert Dziekanski at the Vancouver International Airport in 2007. The IIOBC is funded through the Ministry of Justice but investigators do not report to the government with their findings and so operate at a distance from judicial influence. “Any decisions as to the conduct of files and how they’re determined is strictly within the purview of the chief civilian di-

rector,” said Senior Investigator Ralph Krenz. “So his decision making is independent from government because he doesn’t have to clear it through any other channels.” Krenz says the IIOBC has essentially two options when it concludes an investigation, either exonerate the officers involved, or pass the report to Crown counsel for possible prosecution. That said, there is a very low threshold for sending to Crown. So if the IIOBC thinks it is possible a crime may have been committed it will hand it to the Crown, but the Crown has a higher standard of determining if a case should go to trial. “If we do find that there was any criminality associated to the action then we would forward a report to the Crown counsel for their determination.” He said about 65 per cent of their files occur in the Lower Mainland, with the rest spread around all of B.C. With it not quite being two years old, the organization can’t put a pin on any particular trends. “It’s just too early in the day to come up with any trends or analy-

sis of that type,” he said. “We’ll probably need about five years worth of data...There’s nothing at this point in time that would suggest any kind of trends.” At the end of the last fiscal year of March 31, 2014, the IIOBC received 223 notifications from police for possible incidents. From that they declined 105 as not falling under their scope. Sixty of those files had an initial investigation where it was later found an incident was not under their mandate. About 25 per cent of cases did get a complete investigation. From that 25 per cent concluded, 27 public reports were issued where no criminality was determined. Thirteen reports were submitted to Crown counsel, with seven not proceeding to charges. The Crown does give a public report when it does so. Four cases are now before Crown for a decision on how to proceed, and two charges have been approved on cases. Being charged is not equal to being found guilty. “A very small minority result in any kind of charges,” said Krenz.

UNBC names new senior official

PRINCE GEORGE - Daniel Weeks, President of UNBC, is pleased to announce that Mark Dale will be the University’s first Dean of Regional Programs. The new position was created to provide coordination and senior academic leadership to UNBC’s delivery of courses and degree programs in Northern BC communities outside of Prince George. Dr. Dale will step aside as Vice-President Academic and Provost in order to take on the new role. He also served as Interim President between George Iwama’s departure and the appointment of Dr. Weeks. “When I first came to UNBC six years ago, I was intrigued by UNBC’s connection to the North,” says Dr. Dale. “Now, and especially after serving as Interim President, I have come to understand how

UNBC’s presence throughout the North is integral to the success of the University and the region itself. I’m eager to work with our regional campuses, our educational partners, communities, our alumni throughout the region, and our dedicated faculty and staff to realize opportunities for enhancing our presence throughout the region.” “It’s fitting that we’re announcing this appointment on the eve of UNBC’s 25th anniversary, as we celebrate the creation of UNBC through the sheer will and tenacity of thousands of northerners,” adds Dr. Weeks. “UNBC belongs to the people of the North and they deserve to have someone of Dr. Dale’s experience providing leadership to our regional delivery.”

Chevron invites you to learn more about the proposed Clio Bay Marine Life Restoration Project.

Chevron’s engineering, procurement and construction contractor, JGC Fluor, is currently preparing the land for the construction of the LNG Plant site and contractor support areas.

This proposed project would see Chevron excavate marine clay from the Kitimat LNG construction site at Bish Cove and work closely with the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans to deposit this natural material in specific locations in Clio Bay. The clay will cap-off decaying wood debris left by historic log booming operations that has accumulated on the bottom of Clio Bay, damaging the Bay’s natural ecosystem. A key goal of the project is to restore natural marine life populations in Clio Bay. Come and share your thoughts and ideas with us and learn more about this innovative restoration project. Questions? Email KitimatLNGfeedback@chevron.com

During this period, Chevron and JGC Fluor will control and manage the stormwater runoff from the site through implementation of “Stormwater and Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Plans. “ The Ministry of Environment has requested that Chevron Canada Limited obtain a Discharge Permit under the Environmental Management Act to authorize the stormwater runoff in accordance with the Plans. The Discharge Permit will set objectives for the stormwater discharge to protect the local environment. Protecting people and the environment is Chevron’s highest priority. Hercules is a 2 year old domesticated tiger cross. He is rather small for a tiger, but definitely has tiger like reflexes when it comes to hunting down stuffies, and toys. This guy enjoys a good head scratch, and lounging around, but still has a playful side when he sees some toys. If you are looking for a great companion, Hercules would love to meet you!

PRINCE RUPERT - Renovations to the Tim Hortons on 3rd Ave. West are nearly complete.

Repairs to Amakusa to take longer By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - Repairs to the Amakusa Island, a bulk carrier that ran aground off of Ridley Island more than a month ago, are taking longer than anticipated. While originally expected to be complete in about 15 days, delays in welding work have extended the Amakusa Island’s stay in Prince Rupert. “The crew continues to work around the clock, seven days a week. But it’s a very large job and challenging to weld under water,” said Michael Gurney, manager of corporate communications for the Prince Rupert Port Authority. Required work has pushed the expected completion date of welding until later this week, but Gurney said the crew is making headway. The 228-metre bulk carrier ran aground on July 14 while shifting from berth at Ridley Terminals Inc. to its assigned anchorage. During the incident, the Amakusa Island acquired a gash on its starboard side of the hull below the waterline and began to take on water. Closing the vessel’s water-tight compartments prevented more water from being taken on, however it was determined patch work was needed before it could sail back to its destination. The carrier was moved to Northland Terminal on July 23 for repairs, with a welding crew beginning underwater work to the hull. After the hull’s exterior has been corrected, the vessel’s ballast compartments will be pumped so the extent of internal damage can be evaluated. “That internal repair work may be undertaken at Northland Terminal, as well ... they’ll assess whether it can proceed to its destination in its current state,” said Gurney. “If indeed they go ahead with internal repairs, we could see the Amakusa Island here until at least the end of August.” While the vessel is loaded with 80,000 metric tonnes of coal, no environmental contamination has been reported. As of september 1, 2014 Cardboard and boxboard is banned from the Kitimat Landfill As of September 1, 2014, weekly garbage collectors and our municipal landfill will no longer accept recyclable cardboard. Citizens must take their cardboard to KUTE Recycling Centre or to the Kitimat Bottle Depot/MMBC in Service Centre. Please note: wet, soiled, or oiled cardboard and boxboard is not recyclable. Put it in your garbage can, or take it to the landfill. See “Quicklinks - Recyclables” on www.kitimat.ca and download the Multi-MAteRiAl BC and Kute ReCyCling tABle Non-compliance may result in a $75 fine.

RCMP issue scam alert

Street fair fun …

CAITLIN CLOW / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - A kiddies parade formed part of the activities during the Aug. 9 events held in Terrace during Riverboat Days. The 4600 Block of Lakelse was closed down to allow events to take place.

TERRACE - If a rental looks too good to be true, it likely is, and as someone found out with an online rental recently. Terrace RCMP received a complaint of a fraud regarding a bogus rental posting on Kijiji at 9 a.m. Aug. 5. The posting advertised a local property for rent for $999 per month (utilities included), said police. The fraudster was requesting that the first and last month’s rent be forwarded via “Money Gram” and once the funds were received, the keys would be mailed out, said police. The house in question is actually for sale and the attached email address advertised by the scammer was almost identical to the real email address for the legitimate property – only one letter was different, said police. It was confirmed through the property owners that the house is for sale and not to be rented, said police. This ad has since been removed from the site by Kijiji.

Westview Terminal dust levels above provincial guidelines By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - Government analysis revealed the quantity of dust floating around Westview Terminal was above provincial guidelines in June. The Prince Rupert Port Authority is reporting that Westview Terminal’s dust fall monitoring system showed a “modest increase” in the level of dust collected in June compared to April, the last month samples were taken. In April, third party evaluation showed a number of the dust-fall collection canisters situated around the property were above the objective set by the B.C. Ministry of Environment. The most recent findings from June show that all but one collection canister were over the ministry’s objective, with the remaining canister only being under by a small amount. The samples showed increases in both organic material, which consists of materials like wood pellet dust, pollen and plant matter, and inorganic matter, including road dust. “The port authority takes this seriously,” said Michael Gurney, the Prince Rupert Port Authority’s manager of corporate communications, noting the port will intensify discussions with Pinnacle Renewable Energy on what is being done. “We can correlate this to the types of complaints we’ve received over the last few months,” said Gurney. Throughout the month of June, the port received 26 complaints about air quality, noise and other issues at Westview Terminal through its community comment forum. While that number is high, it was down significantly from the 74-complaints the port received in May. May dust levels are unknown, as Pinnacle Renewable Energy states the canisters were stolen from the site. The collectors have been modified since then to prevent this from happening again. The number of complaints in July de-

clined slightly, with 21 comments relating to air quality, noise and other issues being received. Whether dust fall levels dropped last month is yet to be seen, with the samples currently being evaluated. In May, Pinnacle Renewable Energy implemented its adaptive management plan to address concerns with Westview Terminal,

which has grown to include changes to when and how equipment is used, when noisy work takes place, installation of sound deflecting equipment, requests for quieter vessels and tie-up crews, further training for improvement in operations, watering the roadway and reducing its speed limit. “The big issue re-

mains noise and we remain committed to getting that under control,” said Vaughan Bassett, senior vice-president of sales and logistics for Pinnacle Renewable Energy. While dust has been over the B.C. objective, neither noise or particulate matter have surpassed provincial standards since operations began.

Provincial office to audit Terrace forest operation VICTORIA - The provincial Forest Practices Board board will audit the forest practices of the Terrace Community Forest Limited Partnership on Community Forest Agreement K1X, starting Aug. 25. The Community Forest consists of three operating areas, one north, one west and one south of the city. The audit will examine operational planning, harvesting, roads, silviculture, fire preparedness and fire hazard abatement for compliance with forest practices legislation. Once the audit work is completed, a report

will be prepared, and any party that may be adversely affected by the audit findings will have a chance to respond. The board’s final report and recommendations will then be released to the public and government. Community forests are area-based tenures granted by the Province to foster local control over, and enjoyment of, the benefits offered by local forest resources in these communities. Helen Currie September 1, 1918 to August 10, 2014

Inez Helen Currie, nee, Love was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug 10, 2014 in her 96th year. Helen is survived by her loving family, a son Bruce (Bobbie) and granddaughters Meghan and Tanya (Brendan). Helen was born Sept 1, 1918 in Oyen, Alberta. She attended business college in Saskatoon in 1935 where she trained in bookkeeping. She married John Arthur (Art) in 1942 in Saskatoon. During the war, Helen lived in Victoria, Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa all locations where Art was stationed. After the war in 1946 they moved to Vonda, Sask. where they welcomed the birth of their two sons, Bruce and Glen. In 1955 the family moved to Kitimat, B.C. where Helen became a travel agent at Kitimat Travel and Art became Municipal Manager. In 1976 Helen established her own travel agency, “Wings Travel in Kitimat. Her position as a travel agent brought a wonderful opportunity to travel the world. In 1977 they retired to Kelowna, B.C. for the summers and to Mesa, Arizona in the winters, where she enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. Helen instilled the love of culture, history and travel into her two granddaughters. Sadly predeceased by husband John Arthur (Art) Currie (2011), son Glen (1970), her father John Love, mother Catherine Love, and seven sisters, Winnie Grey, Catherine Lockhart, Dorothy Lapp, Jo Grant, Jen McLeod, Ruth McLean and Vi Campbell. Private service at Helen’s request. Special thanks to Shirley Foster who was at Helen’s bedside most of the nights during her last few weeks, and to all the caring staff at Hospice House. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com.

Honourable Mr. Justice Richard (Dick) Thomas Albert

LOW

July 30, 1940 - August 15, 2014 With deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, the Honourable Mr. Justice Richard (Dick) Thomas Albert Low, at age 74, on August 15, 2014, following a stroke. His love for the law was exceeded only by his love for his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Bruce and Laura (nÊe Thomson), and brother Larry Low. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Gail (nÊe Boehler); son Oliver Low; daughter Meredith Low (Adam Sadowski) and granddaughters Lily and Ruby Sadowski; son Scott Low (Deborah Copeman) and grandsons Finley and Spenser Low; cousin Arlee Gale; along with many cherished family, friends and colleagues. Dick was born in Rock Bay, British Columbia on July 30, 1940 and received his law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1964. Having articled with Crease & Company in Victoria, he was called to the bar in 1965. He then moved to Prince George, where he practiced with the firms of Cashman, Hope, Heinrich & Co and then Wilson, King & Company. At the time of his passing, he was the longest-serving federally-appointed judge sitting in Canada. Dick was appointed to the County Court of Prince Rupert in 1977, to the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1990, and finally to the Court of Appeal in 2000. Dick will be fondly remembered for his sense of humour, quick mind, and generous spirit toward others. A service and reception will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2:00 PM, at West Vancouver United Church, 2062 Esquimalt Ave., West Vancouver. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC would be appreciated. We would also like to express our gratitude to the staff of the neurology floor at Lion’s Gate Hospital, whose care was both skilled and compassionate. To sign the book of condolences please visit www.mckenziefuneralservices.com.

Designed specifically for a narrow lot, this two-storey, three-bedroom family home boasts a glass-railed balcony outside the master suite, as well as three covered patios accessible from the main floor. The home has three entries, each protected by a covered patio. At the front, the entry leads into the kitchen, while another entry at the back leads into the great room. The third entry opens into a corridor, with a coat closet nearby. The great room, with six large windows, will receive plenty of natural light, and features a wood-burning stove. The dining room, located in a bayed-out area, will also be full of light, thanks to windows on three sides. The kitchen is separated from the rest of the greatroom area by an island with a three-seat eating bar. An L-shaped counter configuration will save steps for the cook, who will also appreciate the roomy pantry. French doors open to the large patio that overlooks the front garden, making al fresco meals a breeze during the warmer months. Also on the main floor is a two-piece powder room, as well as the laundry room. Upstairs, the master suite occupies a dormer, so the ceiling slopes in two directions. The en-suite includes an oval soaker tub with its own window, as well as double basins and a glassed-in shower stall. The walk-in closet will

Inside Omerod in on golden team win at tourney By Caitlin Clow

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - Terrace’s own Marek Omerod proved he was a good pick for Team BC’s U16 basketball roster as they took home the gold in the 2014 Western Canadian Championships after taking down Manitoba 58 to 41. “I was out on the floor when the last buzzer went and then everyone came streaming in,” 16-year-old Omerod said. “I saw friends and everyone jumping up and down shouting ‘we’re number one!’” Hugh Omerod, Marek’s father, said the team was constructed based solely on the skills of players that would lead them to the nationals. “Marek’s role was definitely a defensive role,” he said, “that’s one of his strengths.” Standing at 5’11, Marek is the short one on the team playing against guys towering over him at 6’4. “I was really undersized for what I was playing, so I had to use more subtle advantages,” Marek said, “so a little elbows here and there.” The championships were held in Edmonton,

Alta. at the end of July and the round robin had Team BC’s U16 Boys competing against Nova Scotia, Yukon, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. The first game played was against Nova Scotia and the score was close until Team BC took them by six points, they went on to play Manitoba in the second round and they were down by 18 but they came back to beat them by 2 points. Alberta was left in the dust when Team BC beat them by 35 points, then they dominated the Yukon with a final score of 73-48. They took on Saskatchewan next and won with a 45 point advantage taking them to the championship against Manitoba. Training is the key, Marek explained, “not a lot of people my age train. And not a lot of people have a trainer like Terry Monture.” Monture is a close family friend of the Omerod’s and he has been working with Marek for the past five years. “Terry is probably the best trainer in B.C., or at least I’d have to say,” Marek said. The two hit the gym everyday and they go to Parkside to work on basketball skills.

MAREK OMEROD, 16, wears his medal proudly after his basketball team took home the gold at the 2014 Western Canadian Championships when they beat Mantitoba 58-41. “Nobody that I’ve played against my size are as strong,” Marek said, “no one can move me around, but I can push guys that are like 6’4 out of key because I have an explosiveness that was taught to me.” He values preparedness as well as hard work, he explained, “working hard puts you in positions that better

develop yourself against better and bigger players,” he said. Marek is not only talented on the court, he’s also talented in the classroom. He is two years ahead of his peers and he is set to graduate from Caledonia High School in the spring. He hopes to get a scholarship for basketball so he can study pre-med.

“I just want to get a scholarship so I can go to school,” he said, “really, my focus is academic — I’m an academic kind of person.” He was jazzed that his team took home the gold last month, but he said as soon as it was over he put the experience behind him so he can concentrate on the future and keep moving

forward. He returns to school at Caledonia in the fall and will play for the basketball team and keep training so he can get onto the U17 team next year. “At the moment I was ecstatic with the way that we played and the way we finished the tournament,” he said, “It was a great way to end the summer.”

Seniors find themselves in a pickle By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - From September 9 through 13, the Northwest Zone’s senior athletes will be competing against 3,000 others at the BC Seniors Games. Taking place this year in Burnaby, athletes, from Kitimat to Haida Gwaii and beyond, will compete in events ranging from card games to pickle ball. As a matter of fact, pickle ball is

A23

the dominant sport in Kitimat given participants. While three players will compete from Haida Gwaii, Kitimat will boast 10 players in the sport. For those not familiar with pickleball, Wikipedia describes it this way: “Pickleball is a racquet sport in which two to four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a polymer perforated ball over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the di-

mensions and layout of a Badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis with a few modifications. Pickleball was invented in the mid 1960s as a children’s backyard pastime but quickly became popular among adults as a fun game for players of all skill levels.” Zone 10, the local area zone for the Seniors Games, has a membership of 179 members. From that, 107 will go to the games, 100 of those being participants.

The remainder are non-participants. Northern athletes will be competing in 18 of the 26 available events. “There’s really something for everyone,” said Zone 10 director Bill Whitty, who has no hesitation calling the BC Games the second best healthcare in B.C. While it’s too late to join these games it’s not to late to begin to prepare for 2015 in North Vancouver. The Seniors Games have been going on for some time in B.C.

PRINCE RUPERT - To wet the whistle of some fans, the Central Interior Hockey League (CIHL) has released the schedule for the Prince Rupert Rampage’s 2014/2015 season. All told there will be eight games played at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre between October and January, with five of six possible opponents making the trip to perform in front of the crowd at the arena Prince Rupert. The first home game of the season will take place on Saturday, Oct. 4 as the Rampage host the Kitimat Ice Demons. Two weeks later, the team will play one of only two at-home double-headers and the only time during the season the Rampage will host two different teams over the course of one weekend. On Saturday, Oct. 18, the Rampage will play host to the back-toback Coy Cup champion Williams Lake Stampeders. The next day at one p.m. the Rampage will host the Quesnel Kangaroos. November will have only one CIHL game played in Prince Rupert when the Rampage host the Ice Demons on Saturday, Nov. 1. Much like November, there is only one weekend of CIHL action in December as the Rampage host the powerhouse Smithers Steelheads at 8 p.m. on Dec. 6 and at 1 p.m. on Dec. 7. The season will wrap up with perhaps the team’s biggest rival as the Terrace River Kings come to town in January. The two teams will first faceoff on Saturday, Jan. 3 followed by a return to Prince Rupert for the last home game of the season on Friday, Jan. 16. The only team in the league fans won’t see this year are the Lac La Hache Tomahawks, as the Houston Luckies pulled out of the league. The Rampage will be in action in Terrace on Saturday, Oct. 11 and Friday, Jan. 2.
