2014/15 CURLING Anyone interested in curling this season whether you want to give it a try or have curled before and want to rejoin the fun come to our AGM Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7:00pm. at the Curling Club. Singles, juniors, mens, ladies, seniors and full teams are all welcome to come out and play in our Monday Mens, Tuesday Ladies, Wednesday Mixed, and Thursday Morning Seniors Leagues. We also have Learn to Curl and junior curling times on Thursday evenings.

SNOWBIRD CURLING New this year we’ll try an Oct. to Dec. league. This is open to snowbirds, any other individuals or other league curlers that don’t want to curl for a full season. This will depend on interest.

YOUR PARTICIPATION IS REQUIRED As with all leagues, bonspeils and club events we need members to step forward and organize them. Don’t assume someone else (the exec) will run them. The function of your executive is to run the business affairs of the club. If the curlers want leagues, bonspeils and other social events it’s up to the members to step forward to help organize and run. If members and curlers fail to come forward at our club’s AGM the executive will assume there is no interest and may have to cancel some leagues or events. Yes folks and sponsors the club does have a licensed lounge with full rink veiwing and TV. So come watch some curling and the TV will be on so you can keep up with other sporting events. Sponsors, bring your staff over for an evening and order in pizzas or subs and see what curling and our club is about. Yes sponsors, it is once again the time of year when you get to keep your advertising spots at the club, whether it’s a wall board, an in ice sign or cash for our bonspeils. The club is proud to fly your company banner and support your business in the community. Club members will be calling on sponsors with your current info and looking for your continued support. We encourage any other businesses, organizations or individuals wishing to support the Rimbey Curling Club or use our facility for functions to contact the club. The club thanks all our last year’s and past members and supporters of our club. Thanks also to the Community Spirit Grant and Alberta Gaming for their help and support with the club. We are proud to be part of the Peter Lougheed Community Centre and the Town of Rimbey. Members, folks and supporters - we can keep this club strong with your attendance at our AGM and registration on Sept. 11. We need to have leagues and exec organized NOW for our Oct. startup. Note that the $50 surcharge will NOT apply to league fees this year. See you at the AGM! Thanks from your outgoing President Herman

last night’s council meeting (Aug. 25) before council would determine what, if any, actions could or would be taken to prevent the centre’s closure.

The seniors in Bridgeland were very lucky – the flood water did not reach our communities, and there was only ground water back-up. But they were still evacuated from the facilities, their homes, and lost core services for several days. Here are some of the lessons we learned from this crisis, and a list of what seniors who live independently or in supported residences – and the families and agencies who support them – can do to better prepare for an emergency or disaster: 1. Keep a record of medical conditions, allergies and current medications with you at all times, if possible. Note the name and contact numbers for your usual pharmacy and doctors in case you need to renew a prescription in a hurry. 2. Keep all of your current medications and an overnight toiletries bag together for ease of collection and quick transport. Same goes for any essential medical equipment. 3. Make a plan of action, and discuss it with your emergency contacts, for what to do in case of an urgent situation; include back up plans, such as determining a safe place to meet up should you be separated or out of communication. Keep an address book with your emergency contacts handy. 4. Make sure your home or residence has an ‘emergency kit’ which contains 72 hours’ worth of non-perishable food, water, can opener, flashlight and back up batteries, hearing aids and batteries, incontinence products, battery-powered radio, copies of important documents and a first aid kit. 5. Consult Canada’s Public Health Agency which lists a number of helpful resources on emergency preparedness: http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/ seniors-aines/ep-mu-eng.php and http://www. getprepared.gc.ca/cnt/rsrcs/pblctns/yprprdnssgd/

synchronized and in the right place at the right time. Use new social media technologies (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to help keep everyone updated. 5. Ensure residents’ emergency contact information is updated regularly, as details can change often. We also learned throughout this crisis that although many of our seniors are in poorer health and need extra supports, the majority faced this crisis with resilience and grit. When faced with monumental challenges, they just pushed through it. Seniors are not done living yet, and they have a wealth of experience to share with us all. Arlene Adamson is the CEO of Silvera for Seniors, a non-profit organizations which provides a home to over 1,500 lower-income seniors. She is also co-chair of the Seniors and Special Populations Sector Housing Committee, and on the steering committee for the Alberta’s Housing Access Link. www.troymedia.com

‘Great surprise’ from forgotten contest entry

Production: Red Deer, Alberta Published every Tuesday by PNG Prairie Newspaper Group in community with: Publisher: Fred Gorman

Dear Editor, We all enter contests with thoughts of maybe winning, but usually forget what we have entered. I got a surprising phone call from B.C.’s Horse Journal telling me that I had won their contest “WHY I WANNA WIN” tickets to Odysseo by Cavalia in Edmonton. This was a great surprise as I really wished to see this show after hearing so many rave reviews. In the Journal, it stated I had regular tickets but my call and other info was for two VIP tickets. I purchased a ticket for my grandson so he could enjoy the experience along with his mom and myself. This company sure knows how to treat their guests. Very, very clean everywhere, served

a great buffet before the show and an ever-sopopular desert buffet during intermission. After the show, we got an exclusive stable tour to get up and close to the equine stars. Even though we could not pet or feed them, it still was a highlight. Driving to the location, it was quite a sight to see their large mystical white tents against the cityscape. Odysseo is a theatrical experience of horse and man in equestrian arts along with awesome acrobatics and high-tech theatrical effects. The horses are of different breeds and colours numbering around 64. We were treated to a real carousel that came down to the stage, making a great backdrop for

the acrobatics and horses. The ending of the show was a real showstopper with 80,000 gallons of water making a lake on stage, and a horseman doing classical dressage movements across the water. It was a great contest to win. This is what I entered: “I have heard nothing but great praise for this show. I have never had the chance to see it. As a horse lover and breeder for most of my life, this would be a dream come true to see the horses working with what seems like no clue. I would enjoy taking my daughter whose first word was horse. I imagine the art of this show along with the breathtaking horses make it an everlasting view for horse lovers.” Marg Martin, Bentley

RCMP reminding public of summer vehicle dangers By Stuart Fullarton RCMP in Central Alberta are reminding drivers that not all vehicle-related incidents occur in traffic. In times of extreme heat, leaving a child unattended in a vehicle for any amount of time can pose a danger to the child’s health and safety, say RCMP. They’re asking the public to report any cases of children being left alone in vehicles, which they say may cause medical distress

The Bentley Revmasters Car Club would like to

to the child, or put him or her at a greater risk of running away or being abducted. “RCMP takes reports of unattended children in vehicles very seriously,” notes a Red Deer RCMP media release. “Consequences could include Criminal Code charges and investigations by Child and Family Services.” In another matter, Red Deer

RCMP are also reminding drivers to ensure their license plates remain clear of mud, snow and any items such as trailer hitches that could obscure them either partially or fully. Cpl. Matt LaBelle of Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services notes that drivers’ safety may be compromised as a result of worn, damaged or obscured license plates. Continued on Page 7

Plenty of variety displayed at Horticulture and Bench Show By Stuart Fullarton Continuing a longstanding tradition, Rimbey and District Horticulture and Bench Show attracted plenty of entries in a variety of categories at the Rimbey DropIn Centre Aug. 15 and 16. This year’s event even featured a new category al-

lowing children and youths to showcase their skills in different areas of horticulture, crafts and creative arts.

“The children did very well,” said Gail Hood, president of the Rimbey and District Horticultural Group. Continued on Page 9

Police continue to arrest drunk drivers in the community. Four more sots were caught behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol. Three local men and a female from Clive were arrested and charged with impaired driving this week. All immediately lost their licenses, had their vehicles towed and impounded and have a future court date to face the Judge and explain why they made the decision to put other people’s lives at risk. There is no excuse. Four arrests in a year is too many — four in a week is ridiculous! In the very early morning hours on Saturday, Aug. 9, unknown culprits broke into businesses located in Rimbey and Bluffton. Both crimes were committed around 4 a.m. Two men wearing masks were seen leaving the scene northbound

he called for backup. The alert member then immediately placed both occupants of the truck under arrest and it was later found that they had a weapon strategically placed between the driver and passenger seats on top of a bag containing methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia. The subsequent investigation also revealed that the truck had been stolen from Red Deer and only had 370 kms on the odometer. In addition, a stolen high-end mountain bike was found in the truck bed. The driver, a 31-yearold female, and a 38-year-old male passenger, residents of Red Deer, were both arrested and charged with numerous criminal counts. Police added a charge of no insurance to the list of offences. The specified penalty for driving with no insurance alone is $2,875. Evidently, the word has not yet made it to Red Deer or Drayton Valley — if you are into stealing cars and doing meth, stay away from Rimbey! A white Kawasaki Ninga 600 motorcycle was stolen from a lease site near Highway 53 and Range Road 45. The victim temporarily parked the bike and it was gone when he returned to pick it up. from Bluffton in a newer grey GMC Sierra truck with a headache rack. Police continue to follow up on leads in both of these cases and are examining all evidence at this time. On Monday night, a Rimbey officer attempted to stop a possible impaired driver on Highway 20 near Bluffton who was driving erratically. When the Mountie activated his red and blue emergency lights and siren, the driver of the Toyota Highlander put the SUV into high gear and sped northbound trying to outrun the pursuing officer. Police from Breton also engaged in the chase as the culprit tried to evade being captured. When the dust all cleared, a 30-year-old man, a resident of Drayton Valley, was charged with 20 counts from a long list of offences, including break and enter, illegal firearms and possession of methamphetamine and heroine. Beatty Heritage House remains a popular attraction for locals and visitors to Rimbey alike.

Beatty House continuing to attract visitors from far and wide By Stuart Fullarton A glimpse through the guestbook at Beatty Heritage House reveals the historical site to be appreciated far beyond just Rimbey — and Central Alberta, for that matter. Germany, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Calgary are just some of the locales marked in the book’s most recent pages, affirming the provincially designated heritage house’s status as something of a hidden gem for visitors to Central Alberta. And while some stumble on to the house while in transit through town, many go out of their way to include it on their itinerary as they traverse the region, province or country. “There’s a mixture,” said Florence Stemo, secretary of the Beatty Heritage House Society. “It’s just all kinds of people (that visit).” Built in 1925, the house has remained largely unchanged throughout its lifetime. It was originally owned by local businessman Jack Beatty, who lived in it with wife Violet until his death in the mid-1950s. Violet remained in it for several years after, and died

in 1984. Many of the house’s original features both inside and out remain the same. “When we started, we had two or three parts to our mandate: one was to not improve the house, but to make it so that it was being preserved — at the same time keeping it historic as much as we could — and making it accessible to the public,” said Stemo on the society’s decision to save the house when its future became threatened a number of years ago. It’s now open to the public May through August, and acts not only as a centre for tourist information, but also as a hub of recreation, culture, heritage and activity. “In and around the fact that the house is open seven days a week, we’ve had several parties there this year, there’s been a musical evening, and there’s a bridal shower scheduled for a bit later (this year),” said Stemo. “It’s mostly for social and cultural events.” The house’s decorated history becomes apparent immediately upon entering the house, where guests are able to read about its original occupants and

their family history. During the summer months, the house also acts as a tourist information centre, offering a variety of maps, pamphlets and information about Rimbey and the surrounding area. A series of concerts is planned to take place at the house in the coming weeks, although details of those events are currently limited. More information was expected to become available as they draw nearer. Yet, despite the many events and activities that occupy the house throughout the year, it’s the building itself that remains the real attraction, said Stemo. “The house that we took over has hardly had any changes in 85 years,” she said. “In those days, it would have been quite a classy home, and it still stands out.”

HOADLEY

MOORE James (Jim) Willis Moore passed away suddenly on August 17, 2014. He was born in Galahad, Alberta, on June 11, 1949, the eldest son of W. E. (Bud) and Helen Moore. Jim and Elaine were married in January, 1974, and moved to Rimbey in the spring of 1978. Jim taught a few generations of young people in his 30 years at Rimbey Elementary School. After he retired in 2008, he was always busy fixing and building things, gardening, designing websites, and helping with the care of his youngest son, Paul. Jim is survived by his wife of 40 years, Elaine, his children Michael Moore (Jane Conly), Katherine Teske (Kiel Teske), and Paul Moore. Jim spent his life caring for people, plants, and places. He was a father who knew how to quietly bring out the best in his family and a grandfather who taught, nurtured and played all at the same time. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren; Isaiah Teske, and the two more on the way in the next month. At the family’s request, there will be no public service at this time. If desired, donations can be made to PasKaPoo Historical Park, Rimbey, Alberta, or another worthy charity. “The reward of a thing well done is to have done it”Ralph Waldo Emerson.
