Container ship docks on trial run as port seeks more business BY KARL YU
THE NEWS BULLETIN
The Nanaimo Port Authority is seeking to secure regular business from container ship company Westwood Shipping Lines. The port has been working with contractor DP World Vancouver, which has a subcontract with Westwood, to create a direct connection to the Asia Pacific market. The MV Westwood Pacific berthed at Duke Point terminal last week on a test run, which provided service to Japan and Korea, plus feeder service to Asia. According to Jeet Manhas, port chairman, the run went smoothly and another one is scheduled for September. Port members, along with counterparts from DP World and Westwood, will also meet at that time. Regular service would be a boon, he said. “It would be huge, not just for the Nanaimo Port Authority, but the City of Nanaimo in general and for the region itself,” Manhas said. “I can’t put a finger on the number of how many jobs it will create and revenue, not just for the port but also for the [city], people of Nanaimo and tertiary and secondary jobs and so forth – it’s pretty big.” Nanaimo is an attractive option given there isn’t much capacity left at the Prince Rupert and Vancouver ports, according to Manhas. David Mailloux, port manager of communications, said Nanaimo allows Westwood more scheduling flexibility. “It allows them to get in here and get the shipment off to Asia and get back and know they can get in and out as they need to,” Mailloux said. “That’s one real advantage and that’s why they’re testing it ... they have a better read on [Vancouver] and they probably anticipate that things are going to be like that for awhile and they don’t want to lose opportunity.” The port is in preliminary stages of Duke Point dock expansion and recently received $4.5 million of Asia Pacific Gateway Corridor Initiative Program money from the Canadian government, which is intended to assist with the container operation. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

According to Eric Ricker, co-president of the Morden Mine society, the seven-storey high concrete structure is one of only two remaining in North America and a memorial to Vancouver Island’s coal mining past, but it’s on borrowed time. The concrete has deteriorated and material is falling off. Engineers were out at the site earlier this month, testing how sound the concrete columns are. The

study, paid for with $15,000 from the regional district and $7,500 from the City of Nanaimo, will look at what repairs need to be done and where. “It’s a big step along the way but that’s all it is, a step along the way,” said Ricker. “It’s sort of a sequence thing. You have to do this study as part of the progression.” The dream is to see the site opened with a restored head frame and tipple and interpretive centre that memorializes Vancouver Island’s coal mining era. The structure “is all that’s left that people can see,” Ricker said.

Inbrief Blonde raccoons remain elusive on Newcastle city scene
Hotel rezoning scheduled Nanaimo residents can weigh in on rezoning for a proposed high-rise hotel during a public hearing this september. The City of Nanaimo will hold a public hearing sept. 4 to get feedback on rezoning land for insight holdings’ proposed hilton hotel. The company wants to increase height and density on its two Front street properties. Currently the tallest skyscraper allowed on its largest piece of land – 10 Front street – is 23 storeys, but the hotel is proposed to reach 35 storeys from the waterfront. The meeting is at 7 p.m in the Vancouver island Conference Centre’s shaw Auditorium.
Fire closes Parkway lane A brush fire in the city’s south end shut down one lane of the Nanaimo Parkway Friday. Nanaimo Fire Rescue responded to reports of a brush fire along the Parkway Trail, near the Nanaimo Parkway, at approximately 1:40 p.m. Firefighters were forced to shut down a small section of the Nanaimo Parkway in order to gain access to the flames. “when we arrived at the scene there was [an] approximately 100- to 150-square feet fire,” said Tim Doyle, assistant chief for Nanaimo Fire Rescue. “The firefighters advanced our hose line and they got it under control. They did a great job.” Doyle said that they are unsure of what started the fire.

t’s not as well-known or revered as British Columbia’s spirit bear, but Nanaimo has its own animal attraction. Newcastle Island is one of the only places in B.C. known to have blonde raccoons, a colour believed to be caused by a double-recessive gene. It’s an “interesting phenomenon,” according to Sean Pendergast, wildlife biologist with the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations, who said he’s also heard of people spotting white moose, deer and squirrels in different parts of the country. Even B.C.’s white spirit bear is a colour-phase of the black bear. It’s not known how many of the blonde raccoons are on Newcastle, but Pendergast said it’s the only place in the West Coast region he’s heard of them being reported. If the raccoons did exist elsewhere in B.C. it would likely be at very low levels, he said, adding it’s not something the province keeps tabs on.
RABINA PHIPPS PHoto
Nanaimo resident Rabina Phipps captured a photo of the elusive blonde raccoon earlier this summer on Newcastle Island. She has been trying to catch sight of the animals for more than two decades.
The colour could put the animal at a natural disadvantage in areas where there’s more predators, Pendergast said. “To my knowledge it’s not overly common, but there have been reports for some time now or many years on Newcastle Island of seeing these blonde colour-phase racoons,” he said.
“You need this isolated population with [a] low level of gene influx to allow the recessive trait to come out.” Field naturalist Bill Merilees, a member of the Newcastle Island Society, has spotted the creatures over the years and calls it a “cool phenomenon.” Sightings take timing and a little luck, but
the blonde raccoons are on the beach regularly, he said, adding the chances of seeing one on the island is better than anywhere else he knows of in the province. Luck was on the side of Nanaimo’s Rabina Phipps this summer. The paddler was out on the water with friends when she saw a white speck on Newcastle Island. She and her husband, a Nanaimo native, have been trying to catch sight of a blonde raccoon for more than two decades with no success. “I knew [it] was there, but we’ve never found it or seen it,” she said, adding she was beside herself when she caught sight of one. “I said there it is! There it is! I was pulling out the camera and I had camera parts flying all over the place and the boat was drifting and I was yelling at the girls to hold the boat.” Phipps has seen one of the colour-phase racoons several times now, which she says we’re special to have. The animals are listed as one of Newcastle Island’s attractions on the trail guide and according to Merilees the best time to find one is in the morning during low tide, when raccoons come out to forage. news@nanaimobulletin.com
New hotels could boost conference centre’s annual revenues By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN
If the Vancouver Island Conference Centre is Nanaimo’s damsel in distress, then two new downtown hotels are being seen as its knights in shining armor. “Without these two hotels I would be reluctant to be optimistic,” said Mayor John Ruttan in response to the subsidies for the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. “While it’s a ways away I do feel these two hotels in particular could be a game changer for the conference centre. That’s what we are all hanging our hats on at this point.” This year the City of Nanaimo has seen the official ribbon-cutting for the SSS Manhao hotel, marking the construction phase for a 21-storey skyscraper next
to the conference centre, as well as a proposal for the Hilton hotel on Front Street. According to Nanaimo city officials, quality hotel rooms and more volume of business are key to the conference centre reaching its full potential and relying less on taxpayer subsidies. Ruttan hopes the latest hotels signal a “turnaround point” that could put the conference centre back on track if the ventures support conferences and guests. Since its first full year in 2009, the conference centre has gone over budget three times and taxpayers have paid more than $900,000 annually in operating subsidies. In 2014, operators forecast they will go $119,000 over their $1.06-million budget, thanks to fewer bookings and lower than anticipated revenue. The operators are doing what

could open new opportunities. “Offering more accommodation in the downtown core allows us the opportunity to explore some of those groups that ultimately weren’t interested unless there was such a thing,” she said. “As well as this particular hotel allows us sort of a strong … line to another international market.” Tacon believes it is possible to see a reduction in taxpayers’ subsidy and growth, and says “at this stage we are very optimistic of the direction where this is going.” The new hotel is expected to open by 2017. news@nanaimobulletin.com

risoner of war 629. That was the number assigned to Anne Clark’s Ukrainian grandfather Steve Sadowsky 100 years ago, when he was arrested under the War Measures Act and taken to an internment camp in Northern Ontario. On Friday, Clark told his story as a new plaque was unveiled and blessed at Nanaimo’s St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish to mark the centennial of Canada’s first national internment camps. Local dignitaries and Island residents turned out for the event, the last of 100 unveilings across Canada orchestrated by the Ukrainian Civil Liber ties Foundation. The initiative recognizes the internment of 125 to 200 Ukrainians and other eastern Europeans in Nanaimo at the start of the First World War. Another plaque is expected to be installed by the City of Nanaimo on an existing waterfront cairn within three weeks. “It’s ver y touching to see that we’re putting history right by telling the whole story, the real story,”
said Clark. Under the War Measures Act, more than 8,500 women, children and men of eastern European descent would be interned in 24 camps right across Canada. In Nanaimo, a camp opened Sept. 20, 1914, in the old provincial jail near Stewart Avenue and Townsite Road and would keep all the prisoners of war on Vancouver Island until they were transferred to Vernon in 1915. Victoria’s Glenda Kohse said her grandfather, grandmother and uncle were interned in Nanaimo. Her grandmother was English and didn’t need to go, but her husband was the breadwinner, Kohse said, adding her grandmother didn’t realize just how long they were going to be there. They weren’t released until 18 months after the Allies signed the armistice with Germany. “I think people need to know about it,” Kohse said of the camp. “We hear about the Japanese internment camps from World War Two but no one talks about World War One.”

Foot ferry proponents draft terminal design
Duo linked to car thefts arrested Police in the Cowichan Valley have arrested two individuals suspected in a number of recent car thefts in the Harbour City. O n Tu e s d a y, N o r t h Cowichan RCMP arrested Jesse James Biley and Courtney Lee Therrien in Duncan after they were found in possession of several stolen vehicles. Biley, 22, is facing a number of charges including possession of stolen property and theft of motor vehicles. Seven of the charges are related to cases in Nanaimo. Therrien, also 22, has been charged with seven counts of possession of stolen property, which are all related to open cases in Nanaimo. Biley and Therrien were scheduled to make an appearance in provincial court in Duncan on Friday. In the past five weeks the Harbour City has seen an unusually high number of vehicle thefts. Since July 15, 39 vehicles have been reported stolen in Nanaimo. “With the arrest of these two individuals, the incidence of vehicle thefts should normalize. There are other individuals though, who are active in our community stealing motor vehicles,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in a press release. “Car and truck owners should continue to remain vigilant and ensure their vehicles are locked at all times, and valuables removed from sight.” Police suspect Biley and Therrien in a number of open investigations in Nanaimo and the Lower Mainland.

Chill out Morgan Carey, president and CEO of Real Estate Webmasters Inc., takes a unique approach to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge fundraiser. Rather than having a single bucket of ice water dumped on him, about 150 of his employees lined up and took turns dousing him. Carey will donate $10 per employee, for a total of about $1,500 to ALS research.
Island Ferries is presenting designs for a terminal on the south downtown waterfront as it strives to be serviceready next March. Island Ferries has submitted a development permit application to the City of Nanaimo for its new passenger-only ferry terminal on the south industrial waterfront. It’s proposing a temporary facility that would see the renovation of an existing, heavy-timber building, as well as shipping-container washrooms, a small concession and covered walkways. The $63-million foot ferry service between Nanaimo and downtown Vancouver still needs to settle terms with Translink and secure final investment, but David Marshall, director of marine operations, said his company wouldn’t be spending money on consultants and architects to advance design of the terminal if it didn’t have some degree of confidence. “Any time you’re investing money it’s always done
with a certain amount of risk, but you try to manage that a little bit and ... to use the term, you try not to get too far ahead of your own headlights,” he said. “But we also know that in order to start service by the end of March there are things that we have to do on the design side, on the engineering side, on the regulatory side and getting approval from the city … that takes time.” Island Ferries didn’t have any hard numbers for how much it will cost to prepare its 1.1-hectare site for the new ferry service, but Marshall estimates it will cost several million dollars. The facility will be temporary in anticipation of the city asking the company to shift over to the Seaspan site once it becomes available. Concepts are expected to be reviewed by the city’s design advisory panel within the next 10 to 14 days. To see the designs for the proposed foot ferry, please visit www.nanaimobulletin. com. news@nanaimobulletin.com

ALS awareness a YouTube hit
Go ahead, take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. You’ll be cool if you do it, in more ways than one. Most of us, by now, have seen our Facebook friends or celebrities participating in what has been a wildly successful fundraiser for ALS societies around the world. The concept is simple and fun – douse yourself with a bucket of ice water, make a donation to your local ALS society, and challenge three others to do the same. The ice bucket challenge has been exactly the right kind of fundraiser for the summer of 2014. In modern times, many of us are goofing off for the sake of a YouTube clip anyway, so we might as well do it for a good cause. The ALS Society of Canada was reporting last week that including its provincial affiliates, the ice bucket challenge had raised some $800,000 and counting. This summer’s donations are a hundred-fold beyond anything the society has ever seen. A lot of people have had some laughs dumping ice water on their head, but for most, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge isn’t just a thoughtless stunt. Facebook friends are reportedly ‘policing’ the fundraiser – those who fail to mention ALS in their videos or demonstrate some awareness of the cause are criticized. We at the News Bulletin are heartened to see ALS receiving so much attention and support. Earlier this year, we published a series of articles on Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease that destroys the motor neurons that send electric impulses between the muscles and brain. Staff members were inspired, then, to organize fundraising initiatives for ALS, and now we’ve accepted the ice bucket challenge – check our Facebook page later this week to see how it turns out. There is no cure for ALS, but researchers right here in B.C., at the University of British Columbia, could be close to a breakthrough. And our silly stunts could make a difference. It takes a bucket of ice water, a cheque, good intentions and hope. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith, V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

We are not outside of nature; we are part of it. To be fully healthy and human, our most elemental needs are biological, social and spiritual. Politicians ought to know this. Their role is to protect and enhance those necessities of life; otherwise there is no vision, direction or leadership. That’s why it’s absurd for a politician or government representative to speak about any aspect of the economy without acknowledging the threat of human-induced climate change. Many oppose doing anything on ideological grounds, but the science is overwhelming and compelling, and the need for action is clear. What can you say about ‘leaders’ who choose to ignore the best available evidence to the detriment of the people they are elected to represent? Surely those who act only for short-term economic gain, imposing destructive consequences on generations to come, must be held responsible. And what can we say about ‘leaders’ who can see something is wrong and have the means to respond but choose not to? Our elected representatives deserve respect for their commitment. But the elevated status and power of politicians also carries responsibilities. Many are abrogating those responsibilities for ideological reasons that have nothing to do with our well-being.

Mine sludge will harm fish habitat To the Editor,
Re: What we know about the Mount Polley spill, Opinion, Aug. 21. I read with great interest the Tom Fletcher column on the mine spill where he says only one trout was a fatality of the spill. I have worked in the fisheries con-

Mayor, council should commit to transparency
Citizens care about downtown parks
To the Editor,
To the Editor,
Re: Keep parkland public property, Editorial, Aug. 14. As a daily walker of the seawall, I am very concerned about leasing Georgia Park. Coun. Fred Pattje believes the city could lose control of what happens with that section of the park no matter how flowery the wording. He is right. Also, he is right, reminding us of a previous city council that was prepared to give a portion of Maffeo Sutton Park to the conference centre hotel developer. Luckily they were able to undo that. More people and vistors and events use this area, more then any part of the city. Why does city council continue wanting to give parkland away to private developers? What are they thinking? ln 1970, Maffeo Sutton Park was protected for public use in perpetuity. lt was purposed for a marina, boat sheds and repair shops. A concerned
Citizens should be aware that the city is considering the construction of a roadway on the existing walkway from Rutherford Road to Linley Valley Drive. This pathway and associated wetlands were protected under strict guidelines set by the city in accordance with the policy to maintain such green areas in the Linley Valley for use by all citizens of Nanaimo. A Linley Valley Drive exit onto Rutherford Road will cause traffic congestion. This access to Linley Valley is a critical link in a fragile ecosystem of cliffs, woodlands and wetlands areas that are an important habitat for at-risk species. This area is currently enjoyed by many people in Nanaimo.

Let’s be blunt. Any candidate for mayor or council who does not publicly, in writing, commit to an independent investigation of the illegal secrecy refusing to disclose business the public who paid for it is entitled to, abuse of staff, golden handshakes with our tax money, hiring of useless staff, etc., is unworthy of your vote. Furthermore, that pledge should include a commitment to seek, by all legal means available, reimbursement of wasted tax money from the abusers personally. And, if you do not vote? The abusers of public office will only be emboldened, thinking they ‘got away with it.’ Citizens must act or lose their power.

Sharp-eyed community policing volunteer spots stolen vehicle A Nanaimo RCMP community policing volunteer got to practice what she was preaching Wednesday and is credited with locating a stolen car. The volunteer was handing out Lockout Auto Crime brochures at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre parking lot when she discovered a stolen 2003 Chrysler Sebring. According to police, the vehi-
cle had front-end damage and licence plates that weren’t of British Columbian origin. One of the tires had been taken off and rested beneath the vehicle. She called the local police detachment and provided a description and licence number and it was revealed that the car had been stolen from Victoria on July 25. Officers were sent to the scene, but no arrests were
made and the car was towed to an impound lot. “We are fortunate to have a very active volunteer program at the Nanaimo detachment,” said Dawn Portman, Nanaimo RCMP community policing coordinator, in a press release. “Our volunteers are community-minded people who are excited to be able to give back to the community and assist the
RCMP in preventing crime.” u Police are looking for a suspect in a robber of the Domino’s Pizza outlet on Norwell Drive, behind Country Club Centre. Shortly after midnight on Monday, a male wearing a Halloween mask entered Domino’s Pizza brandishing a black metal collapsible baton and demanded the safe be opened.
The store employee complied with the request and the suspect took an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect is described as 5-foot-7, 160lbs, blue eyes, short brown hair (possibly buzzed), with a stubble beard. Musician performs to crowds throughout the globe Alberta singer has performed in multiple countries BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN
I
t’s not money that fuels singer/songwriter Scott Cook to log thousands of kilometres around the world each year, it is the music and people he meets. “You don’t make a lot of money at it and all kinds of trouble comes your way. There are plenty of occasions to ask yourself why you’re doing these gigs at all. Usually what keeps me going is just the people who write to me out of the blue,” Cook said. “I feel like that is a real honour and it is also kind of an encouragement for me to keep doing it.” O n We d n e s d a y ( A u g . 27) Cook will be performing alongside the Second Chances at West Coast Sessions in Nanaimo. West Coast Sessions is a house concert series that is held on Victoria Road and hosted by Paul and Catherine Bezooyen. “All the money goes to the artist so it actually supports the artist better than a club gig would,” Cook explained about the house concert series. “Also, the people get to make a real connection with the artist and they get to meet them … I just feel like it is just a more real way of experiencing music and it is the real way that music used to be experienced.” Although Cook has performed in big venues and festivals, he said he loves the intimate setting that a house concert provides. “One of my favourite places to play is somebody’s living room,” Cook said. “That’s actually what has kept me going. I think if the house
concerts hadn’t come along I probably would have quit just because I was playing so many bars and feeling like I wasn’t making a connection with anybody.” Seven years ago Cook quit his job as a kindergarten teacher in Taiwan and began making his living on the road as a full-time musician. “It was good. It was a good life. It was fun but I felt like if I were to quit that somebody else would come along and do my job just as good as me or better,” Cook said. “I just didn’t feel like I was uniquely called to that line of work or anything and I have felt like music has become a calling for me. I felt like I at least have to give this a shot.”

Scott Cook’s album This One’s on the House was released in 2009.
The Alberta native has released four albums, Long Way to Wander, This One’s on the House, Moonlit Rambles and One More Time Around. “The songs are just stories,” Cook explained about his music. “Some from my own life and some from other places.” Since 2007, Cook has logged tens of thousands of kilometres performing to audiences around the world. In Canada, Cook has performed in major cities such as Vancouver and Halifax as well as smaller communities including Brentwood Bay, B.C., Turner Valley, Alta., Fal-

con Lake, Man., Kemptville, Ont., Wakefield, Que., Portuguese Cove, N.S., and Maple Creek, Sask. “It’s hard to say what it is like,” Cook said about touring so frequently. “I’ve been making a full-time living at it for seven years. Now it feels like more normal to me. If I am around a town for a month or two I start to feel like I am spinning my wheels. Once I get back on the road that feels kind of like home sweet home.” Cook’s music has also taken him to places such as Czech Republic, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Taiwan. The Alberta native explained that while it can be easy to stay motivated on the road it isn’t always an easy way to make a living. “In a small way it is pretty easy to stay motivated because you have a mission everyday,” he said. “Each day you have something that you have to do. You have to get somewhere that you have to play. So that kind of drives itself a long.” Scott Cook performs at the West Coast Sessions, 711 Victoria Rd., on Wednesday (Aug. 27) at 6:30 p.m. Admissions is $15 by donation. Yet for us it worked out because we were both on holidays and came back and put it together. It was a very positive and fun experience to do that.” Porter, who has been making pottery for a number of years, explained that she really enjoys the personal touch that pottery has. “I really like the connection with history ... as well as the usefulness that people can use it every day,” Porter said. “As well as it is not mass produced. There is a personal touch in each of the pieces. It’s just a pleasure working with clay because it is very pliable.” A handful of the pieces on display at This & That are

Although many of pieces are reasonably priced, they can be difficult to sell to people on the Island. One of the reasons for the tough sell is due to the high concentration of artists and retirees on Vancouver Island, according to Porter. “We’ve been to Nova Scotia and the prices were way higher, but they have a lot of tourists that come up from the States and we don’t have that,” Porter said. Rosemary, Thyme, Taiger & Duke
Rosemary & Thyme
Rosemary and Thyme were adopted from us back in November 2013. They were eight weeks old at the time. They are living very happily together and are very loved. Duke & Family
Our beloved Duke was a real favorite here. For some reason we struggled to find a lot of interest in him, despite him being a wonderful and loving dog. It saddened us to let him go, but we wanted to increase his chances at adoption so we transferred him to our shelter in Victoria ! Well it was the best decision we could have made for him, because guess who has just found his amazing new family! We love you Duke, You’re home!

MUSIC
Music can help kids with school skills completed at Stanford University showed that mastering a musical instrument improves the ability to process parts of the spoken language. The researchers believe that additional research might develop a way to use the knowledge obtained in the study to increase language develop-
ment for individuals with dyslexia or cognitive disorders. In many schools, music education is being drastically reduced or eliminated. Parents may want to look outside the classroom for music instruction or play more music at home.

Music’s efficacy as a teaching tool has long been studied. Though some still doubt if music has any effect on student performance, a strong body of evidence suggests otherwise. Studies into the effects of music on learning are nothing new. Such studies have been conducted for decades, gaining popularity during the 1950s when research was done on something called the “Mozart Effect.” The Mozart Effect theorizes that listening to Mozart can temporarily improve performance and may even boost a person’s IQ. Ongoing research continues to support the theory that music education can help children on many levels. In Canada, a research group from McMaster University conducted their own study into music education. That study, which was published in the journal Brain in 2006, examined two groups of children, ages 4 to 6. Each were taught the same lessons, but one group was also given musical instruction. The study found that the group of children who received musical instruction scored much better than their peers in literacy, mathematics, IQ, and memory skills. Music education is not just for the average student. Other research shows it may be beneficial to children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. A study

FITNESS & HEALTH
FALL 2014
Getting fit goes beyond lifting weights For those who aren’t fitness fanatics, getting back in shape is a goal to strive for. Though rates of overweight and obesity are high, society has also grown increasingly health-conscious in the last 10-20 years, as the growing
number of gyms and other fitness centers can attest. Still, for those hoping to shed a few extra pounds, the first step toward doing so can be the hardest. Many instantly think of the oft-intimidating nature
of the local gym, where muscular fitness enthusiasts dominate the landscape. However, getting fit does not have to include weight training. While weight training can be a valuable means to get healthier and shedding pounds,
there are a host of other exercise options that can lead to very positive results. * Spinning * Aqua aerobics * Pilates * Abdominals * Fusion * Yoga

FITNESS & HEALTH Yoga moms pushing soccer moms to the sidelines
29
FALL 2014
Many women are trading in their team jerseys for yoga mats. The busy soccer mom has transformed into the calm and ethereal yoga mom who is more interested in a stress-free life than racing around to sports practices. For a long time the stereotypical image of a mom was a minivan-driving, white, 40-something picking up Timmy from sports practice and Jenny from cheerleading. Her fast-paced lifestyle had her racing between kids’ engagements to home to other social obligations in a harried, timepressed manner. But today you’re more likely to see mom practicing her asanas instead of toting clipboards and team snacks. She’s scooting around in her Toyota Prius instead of the Dodge Caravan and is more about living in the moment than over-programming children with music lessons and enrich-
ment classes. Today’s moms are more free-spirited and learn-as-you-go types. Todays moms are more community-based and interested in being everyone’s friends. That’s why you’re more likely to find Yoga Moms blogging, heading grassroots campaigns and seeking new friends on social networking sites. Yoga moms are more about spreading the word on ways to improve the community and planet. They are certainly educated, successful women. They’re simply putting their needs on par with the needs of their family and feeling better about themselves in the process.

Encourage kids to be physically active When today’s parents reflect on their childhood, many likely recall seemingly endless days spent playing outdoors. But when today’s kids become tomorrow’s parents, chances are their recollections won’t recall nearly as much time spent idling the days away under the sun. The rise in overweight or obese children is likely a byproduct of several factors, not the least of which is that

First aid courses are an important life skill The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada says AED use, combined with CPR, can improve chances of survival upwards of 75%. CPR, or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, is an essential First Aid skill, taught within the majority of introductory and advanced First Aid Courses. Along with C.P.R, familiarization and use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) are also taught within such First Aid courses. Usage of AED’s are becoming more prominent within the public, through programs such as Public Access to Defibrillation (PAD), where trained citizens are able to assist in emergencies by having access to AED’s at public venues such as Hockey Arenas, Swimming Pools and Recreation Centers. Both Adults and Youth attending First Aid Courses learn practical hands-on skills to help respond to and prevent emergencies from occurring. Courses such as the Emergency First Aid and Standard First Aid offer these skills, the latter a two-day course aimed at workplace and public citizens seeking more informative and detailed training. After completing any First Aid course such as those offered at St. John Ambulance, practice and continuing education will strengthen one’s skills and ability to assist during an emergency, most of which occur unexpectedly. Within Nanaimo alone, St. John Ambulance trained 3, 986 people in essential First Aid skills throughout 2014. Adults have opportunities to further develop and maintain their First Aid training through the St. John Adult Brigade, a volunteer program designed to educate Adults in advanced First Aid, Emergency Response, and Disaster Response. Training Nights are scheduled regularly in order to prepare volunteers for public event volunteering and cover the numerous aspects of First Aid, Emergency and Disaster Response. Some examples include: Grab and Go Bags, Community Care Centers, Emergency Preparedness Kits, and becoming a qualified Advanced Medical First Responder (AMFR). During public events, such as the Bathtub Races, VIEX, Silly Boat Regatta, BC Summer Games 2014, the Adult Brigade makes their presence by volunteering over 5, 615 hours in 2014 to help respond to any medical emergencies. Youth are especially encouraged to gain insight into First Aid skills and knowledge. Besides First Aid skills;
responsibility, critical thinking and stress management skills are also gained throughout a course. First Aid Courses available for Youth include the Lifesaver course and What Every Babysitter Should Know course. Other opportunities to learn and improve upon skills exist in the form of the St. John Ambulance Youth Brigade, a Cadet program promoted internationally. The St. John Ambulance Youth Program is a structured health-orientated program, which adds upon First Aid training by giving Youth opportunities for social, education and personal development. Weekly training educates Youth from ages 6-21 along with numerous opportunities at community service events, leisure activities, such as camping, hiking, canoeing, and participation at special events. Upon training and public service opportunities, Youth members are given numerous opportunities to obtain scholarships for post-secondary education within the Medical Services field through the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Grand Prior Award and Sidney R. Sharman Scholarship. Combining the opportunities of First Aid education, social, educational and personal development, Youth members become more successful in leadership and ultimately contributing to the community. The Nanaimo St. John Ambulance Youth Brigade alone donated 3, 334 hours of their time to training and public appearances within 2014. Finally, there are also ways to maintain First Aid skills and contribute to the community through the St.

John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program. This program is run alongside the Adult and Youth Program, yet is unique in allowing volunteers and their trained dogs to attend multiple public venues to bring happiness and reduce stress to public individuals. The Nanaimo St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program itself donated 3, 102 hours throughout 14 different facilities in Nanaimo, attended more than once in 2014. Such venues are Nursing Homes, Vancouver Island University, and during First Aid exams at the St. John Ambulance Training Center. Individuals in Nanaimo, and globally are encouraged to become educated within the First Aid field, either by tak-
ing a onetime course, or volunteering within a St. John Ambulance Program. Such opportunities allow citizens, both adults and youth, to be prepared for when an unexpected emergency arises. Further commitment and education allows an individual to transition from a bystander in an emergency, to someone who can assist, save a life, and even contribute to the development and well-being of their own community. Nanaimo citizens interested in taking a First Aid Course, or becoming part of the Nanaimo St. John Ambulance Youth, Adult or Therapy Dog program may contact the their local St. John Ambulance Branch; 2250 Labieux Road, Nanaimo, BC, (250)729-8889, or via nanaimo@bc.sja.ca.

Raiders upset Rams in wild one
Buccaneers to face off in exhibition
I
V.I. COMES BACK to win 52-44 against first-placed Langley.
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
BY GREG SAKAKI
The new-look Nanaimo Buccaneers skate into pre-season action this week. The city’s Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League team takes the ice for its first exhibition game on Wednesday (Aug. 27) in Parksville against the Oceanside Generals.
THE NEWS BULLETIN
V.I. shocked Langley, and probably the league, with a barnburner 52-44 upset win this weekend. Nanaimo’s V.I. Raiders defeated the previously unbeaten Langley Rams on Saturday at Caledonia Park thanks to huge plays on special teams, some tricks, and a no-quit effort. “There was so many ups and downs…” said Ash Gayat, V.I. defensive end. “But whenever we’re down, we’re not actually down on ourselves; we’re still playing a 0-0 football game.” The Rams led 44-28 late in the third quarter, but the Raiders scored two touchdowns in 28 seconds to make it a two-point game going into the fourth quarter. The Raiders’ defence stood tall in the final quarter, allowed its offence to score the necessary points, and left the Rams with only a hail mary attempt as time expired. The Raiders celebrated exuberantly at game’s end as they improved to 2-3 in B.C. Football Conference play. “It’s great to have the guys win, expecially in this fashion, because it’s going to allow them to believe more,” said Brian Ridgeway, Raiders coach. “Now they get to actually feel the success.” Micheal Ritchott was the difference maker for the Raiders early, scoring their first three touchdowns. He returned the opening kickoff for a major, broke free for a 105-yard catchand-run TD on V.I.’s first offensive series, then added a 108yard kick-return TD early in the second quarter. Ridgeway said the special teams plays gave his team a boost.

I demand a lot, so I think they see that and they know that.
GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN
Langley Rams defensive back John Beckerleg, left, can’t stop V.I. Raiders receiver Arthur Fabbro from scoring a touchdown in Saturday’s B.C. Football Conference game at Caledonia Park. The Raiders won 52-44.
“It’s a quick hitter, so everyone’s feeling good instantly,” the coach said. Another storyline was trick plays – the Raiders executed three of them. Dustin Rodriguez scored a TD on a 75-yard hookand-ladder with Marshall Cook, Matias Bueno and Cory Lewis pulled off an onside kick and Gayat made a first-down reception late in the game on a tightend eligible play. Ridgeway said he has to be convinced to run trick plays. “They’re there [in the playbook],” he said. “I don’t like the trickery plays because there’s

so many things that have to happen correctly. If one thing goes wrong it’s a real bad play but when it works effectively, man, it’s awesome, and it brings the crowd right up.” Aside from Ritchott’s hat trick and Rodriguez’s TD, the Raiders also got majors from Taylor Flavel on a one-yard run, Arthur Fabbro on a five-yard reception and Cook on a 20-yard reception. Bueno’s 16-yard field goal rounded out the scoring. Quarterback Liam O’Brien was 17-for-26 passing for 336 yards and three TDs. Defensively, Daniel Dubinski

The Bucs have a new coaching staff this year, with Derek Bachynski taking over as head coach. He said on Thursday that players are skating fast and working hard. “I demand a lot, so I think they see that and they know that,” he said. A challenge of junior B hockey is that some potential Buccaneers players will first try to stick with junior A clubs, and the preseasons overlap. “You want to pick your team and get on with things … You’ve just got to be patient as a head coach,” Bachynski said. Mining from recyclables becoming more efficient
I
zerO-wASTe conference aims to find more ways to reduce and recycle unwanted materials.
By Jan Hastings Ever wonder whether recycling saves energy? Just one look at all those trucks hauling bins full of scrap metal, paper and organic waste makes it clear that even recycling takes plenty of energy. So, are we ahead? Answer: absolutely. The British Metal Recycling Association concludes that more than 90 per cent of the energy used to mine metals produces only waste material. To be profitable, a gold mine has to produce about 1.5 grams of gold per ton of rock. Imagine the equipment and energy used to produce that tiny amount. By com-
JENISH PLAN NO. 7-3-999
parison, one tonne of recycled cellphones contains three grams of gold (and other rare metals like platinum). According to the association, energy savings from recycling metals range from 60 per cent for zinc to 95 per cent for aluminum. Paper recycling is well established, and with good results. The Energy Educators of Ontario has stated that recycled paper requires 64 per cent less energy than does making paper from virgin wood pulp. The U.S. Department of Energy asserts that a tonne of paper made from recycled fibre conserves 7,000 gallons of water, up to 31 trees, 4,000 kWh of electricity (enough to power a house for nearly half a year) and up to 60 pounds of air pollutants. Plastic recycling is the latest candidate – and a complex one. But Dr. Mike Biddle of MBA Polymers
stated that when post-consumer plastic is diverted from landfill or incineration, and used to manufacture new products, 80 per cent of the energy and one to three tonnes of CO2 that it takes to produce one tonne of virgin plastic is saved. Nanaimo boasts an approximate 70 per cent waste diversion rate. What if we found ways to not only recycle or reuse the tonnes of plastic that come to Nanaimo Recycling Exchange each year, but also to supply our municipal vehicles with fuel made from the stuff? These and many more ideas are going to be the topics of the International Zero Waste conference in Nanaimo, this October. Leadingedge speakers with concrete ways to accomplish authentic zero waste will come from around the world to help us plan Island-grown solutions for our waste. u Jan Hastings is the executive director of the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange.
