Public school teachers in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows who haven’t received a full pay cheque since June are tapping into donations to make ends meet. The Maple Ridge Teachers Association set up the hardship fund soon after teachers across the province went on a full-scale strike June 17. Association president George Serra couldn’t say how many teachers have accessed the fund or how large it is. The association has received donations from retired teachers, as well as support from current teachers, who’ve been chipping in their strike pay. “When you don’t have a pay cheque for weeks, things can get tough in a hurry,” said Serra, whose association represents 1,100 teachers. Teachers who’ve accessed the fund are receiving support in cash or via grocery vouchers. “I don’t think teachers are that different from anybody else. Unfortunately, a lot of us live pay cheque to pay cheque,” Serra added. Associations across B.C. have set up similar funds, with the Surrey teachers even creating a food bank. Teachers went on strike June 17, closing schools two weeks before the end of the school year.

Ready agreed to monitor the situation, and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will be productive.

The parties agreed that they will not engage in public discussion pending further discussions with Ready. Serra said union representatives from across B.C. will meet in Kamloops Friday to discuss their plan of action for September. The union has yet to decide whether teachers will continue with a full-scale strike once the

new school year begins or switch to a limited withdrawal of services. On Tuesday, teachers and their supporters staged rallies outside the offices of MLAs Marc Dalton and Doug Bing. The B.C. government, meanwhile, is offering parents of students under the age of 13 years $40 a day if the strike is not over

by the start of classes in Sept. The program will cost the government about $12 million a day, about the same amount of money it costs to run the public school system. Kellie Marquet, chairperson for SD42’s parent advisory council, sees the $40 as a bribe. “Most parents are offended by it,” said Marquet. “It’s the government’s way of spinning the same numbers differently. You can slice the pie up into a hundred pieces, but it’s still one pie. Where are parents going to get daycare? It just shows how out of tune the government is with our province.” Marquet hears daily from parents wondering if school is going to start next week. If teachers were not on strike, they’d be in class right now, setting up for a new school year and working on lesson plans. Marquet said parents are anxious because of the uncertainty. She’s heard about some parents pulling kids out of the public school system to home school them. Others are turning to grandparents. Even though the strike has continued through summer, Marquet believes parents want teachers to continue to their fight and not give up. “If they give up now, it was all for nothing,” she said. “It’s not about teachers wanting days off and raises. It’s about our kids getting a quality education. We just have to keep the pressure on.”

The B.C. government has launched a new website to prepare parents for a possible continuation of the teacher strike after Labour Day. The website, bcparentinfo.ca, promises the latest bargaining updates on B.C.’s festering teacher dispute, and will act as a portal for parents registering to collect $40 a day for each child under 12 if the strike drags on. It also offers links to online learn-

ing resources from school districts, which have proliferated in recent years. Talks have continued under a media blackout since mediator Vince Ready met the two sides last week. “Mr. Ready agreed to monitor the situation, and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will be productive,” the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and B.C. Public School Employers’ Association said in a brief statement. Negotiations broke off and a fullscale strike and lockout ended the school year in June. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher met both sides earlier, but declined to attempt mediation, after finding too

large a gap between the two sides. Education Minister Peter Fassbender and BCPSEA chief negotiator Peter Cameron have maintained that the BCTF’s benefit demands remain far beyond those of other public sector unions that have settled contracts. Also at issue is class size and special needs support, with BCPSEA’s latest offer rejected by the union and the latest of a series of court actions scheduled for this fall. Ready’s last involvement in the long-running series of teacher disputes was as an industrial inquiry commissioner in 2007. At that time he recommended that a senior provincial official be involved in talks along with an independent mediator.

The hope is that speeding up the natural salmon-mating process will boost the return of the sockeye salmon to Alouette Lake. And thanks to more than $60,000 in new money, the Alouette River Management Society now has a place to allow that to happen. The money, half from B.C. Hydro and half from the District of Maple Ridge, will allow upgrading of the society’s upper fish hatchery on the grounds of the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women at the north end of 248th Street. “We’re just trying to boost numbers,” said Greta Borick-Cunningham of ARMS. “It’s just trying to improve their chances of success.” The society, next summer, will grab 10 pairs

of sockeye that have returned to the Alouette River attempting to spawn in Alouette Lake. The upgraded hatchery will be used to house them and produce 30,000 of their fry, to be released into the lake in 2016. The hope is that breeding the pairs that return to spawn will produce offspring that have a higher drive to return from the Pacific Ocean to the Alouette system to spawn. Releasing them into the lake will allow the youngsters to imprint on

that body of water, aiding their return in a few years to spawn. Currently, juvenile sockeye are let out over the spillway of the Alouette Lake dam each spring in the hope that they’ll return in three years and re-establish a sockeye run that was killed off when B.C. Hydro built the dam in 1926. That program has been running since 2005, when sockeye, which were considered landlocked fresh-water kokanee, were released over

the dam spillway into the South Alouette River. “The first sockeye or sockanee arrived in 2007 to the Alouette River much to the delight of so many people who have worked for years to see this important keystone species re-establish itself in its historic spawning grounds,” said ARMS. But returns of the sockeye that have been released for the last seven years have been spotty, with some years only a handful showing up at the hatchery or the base of the dam, where they’re trapped, then transported by truck and released into the lake. So far this year, no sockeye have come back to the South Alouette River. “There have been no sockeye yet. We’re wondering where they are. They’re missing in action.” B.C. Hydro is chipping in $32,426 through its fish and wildlife compensation program for the hatchery upgrade, while the District of Maple Ridge is giving $30,000.

But he has launched a website – votemapleridge. org – to try to raise some interest in the voting public. Jensen wants to list all candidates for mayor and council and provide their social media links so that people are just a click away from the candidates and their platforms. Votemapleridge.org will be “as non-political as possible, with only information and links, no campaigning and no politics. “I would like to double the voter turnout,” he says, although he knows that won’t happen this year. In the 2011 election, only a quarter of eligible voters showed up. Jensen pointed out that Mayor Ernie Daykin was elected with 7,400 votes, while Cheryl Ashlie drew the most number of votes as councillor, with 4,949. “That’s way less than 10 per cent of the population.” So far, the website lists all four candidates for mayor – Ernie Daykin, Graham Mowatt, Mike Morden and Tyler Shymkiw – and six council candidates. There’s no talk of a slate forming, of a group of like-minded candidates running for office. “I’m running as an individual. I don’t support one or the other any of the people on there,” Jensen said. “This is going to be for everyone. If 40 people run, I’ll put links to all the candidates.” It’s Jensen’s first time seeking a council seat. He has ran four times for school board, unsuccessfully. He’d like to see the website stay up after the election, similar to Surrey’s Cityspeaks website, which allows people to air their thoughts. But he realizes the website won’t hurt his election chances, either. “I’m doing this because

it’s needed and it’s important.” Like every other candidate, Jensen wants to address Maple Ridge’s crime and homelessness and says the downtown should continue to grow and densify and become gentrified. That will attract more people to the town centre because it’s a nice place to go and will push out the criminal element. “But we’re a long way from that.” Many lots sit empty. But he’s got new ideas, as well. Jensen doubts a major mall will be built in the Albion flats at 105th Avenue and Lougheed Highway. “I think that ship has sailed.” Mall developer Smart Centres is still negotiating a land swap with the District of Maple Ridge to allow a mall to be built. Jensen wants the land on the east side of 105th Ave. to be focused on community use, and to become a hub, similar to what’s already envisaged by district planning. Jensen, though, is thinking big. “I would like to see the Albion flats become more community use. I would love to see a stadium. I’d love to see an Olympicsized swimming pool facility with a wave pool. It’s a geographic centre of Maple Ridge.” He’d also like to see the district sell its downtown property and its public works yard on Dewdney Trunk Road and 239th Street and use the proceeds to build a new municipal hall and public works yard in Albion flats. The public works yard easily could be sold for single family home developments. Doing so would free up property in the downtown so Maple Ridge could finally get its hotel. “This is a long-term vision. We have to think about the future.” Developing Albion flats won’t hurt the growth of downtown, he adds,

pointing out that by car, Albion flats is only three or four minutes away. Instead, the growth of

both go hand in hand. Such development would be costed out and paid for, he added.

“I guess I just think we need some exciting vision, some big thinking.”

Leading edge A lot has happened since Marc Emery went to jail in the United States four years ago, not the least of which – the state in which the Vancouver pot activist was sentenced to five years in federal prison for dealing marijuana seeds has now legalized the sale of cannabis. While Emery cooled his heels behind bars in Folkston, Ga., and Yazoo City, Miss., Colorado, then Washington became the first states to allow the possession, use, production, distribution and personal cultivation of marijuana. Some states have legalized its use for medical reasons. Another 15 states have decriminalized pot, while other states have lowered penalties for possession of small amounts to a misdemeanor. The tide to accept marijuana for recreational use on par with alcohol, complete with all the tax revenues their sale generates for governments, seems to be turning. In Canada, possession of marijuana in any quantity remains illegal, although enforcement varies from province to province, even between municipalities. Vancouver police were unperturbed by the marijuana smoke that greeted Emery’s triumphant return to his hometown on Sunday. Emery’s incarceration in the U.S. wasn’t his first brush with the law. Nor with irony. When he operated a book shop in London, Ont., in the 1980s, he was charged with defying that province’s laws against stores operating on Sundays. Since 1992, stores in Ontario can open on Sundays. In 1991, he was convicted of selling copies of rap CDs that had been deemed obscene and were banned in Ontario. What we know about the mine T

oday I’ll attempt to cut through the speculation and fear-mongering that have swirled around the Mount Polley mine dam breach and tell you what’s really known. As Black Press and our local publication B.C. Views the Williams Lake Tribune reported before Tom Fletcher and after the incident, the mine reopened in 2005 after a fouryear shutdown and was expanding its operation, including the tailings pond. Rising metal prices helped put 380 unionized employees plus management back to work. Most are now working on rebuilding the tailings dam and cleaning up the spill site. Imperial Metals applied earlier this summer for an increase in water discharge, and was waiting for B.C. government approval at the time of the Aug. 4 dam breach. This was to be the second amendment to a water release permit issued when the mine started up in 1997. It has had a surplus of water due to rain and snow accumulation since it opened (under an NDP government, for those who want to turn everything into a political corruption story). The reason water release has been allowed is that in the absence of acidproducing rock, metal contamination of water is minimized.

Imperial Metals’ routine tests with rainbow trout in undiluted tailings pond water have now been confirmed by environment ministry results, and water and fish from all but the immediate spill area have been cleared for human consumption. For an example of acid mine drainage, look up the Britannia Mine Museum, now a reclaimed national historic site with a water treatment plant built to function for hundreds of years. Before that, acid-produced toxic metal pollution drained from the abandoned mine into Howe Sound for decades. Early tests at Mount Polley indicate that this sort of long-term water remediation may not be required. The initial pulse of suspended sediment didn’t last long enough to affect fish in most of Quesnel Lake, much less the Fraser River system. Sediment tests show elevated iron and copper, with “leachability” results to come. Containment and removal will have to be undertaken. On May 24, Mount Polley received the first high water warning in its history. This was not a “breach,” contrary to some reports. The latest water permit application and work to raise the dam took place after that. It’s not difficult to deduce from aerial photos what was happening as mine management found ways to extend operation, including an underground phase. The pond was filling up with pulverized rock, reducing its capacity to hold water. Most of the accumulation is still there for all to see, as is the cross-section of the dam so abruptly exposed in the wee hours

I applaud Paul English in that he speaks for the silent majority on a number of serious issues facing our community. From the crime problems resulting from the location of the Caring Place to the choking traffic resulting from runaway development with no planned expressways, to the lack of local shopping. The city planners, council and mayor are either completely out of touch with citizens’ needs and concerns or lack the will to make the tough decisions for change. You only have to look at Abbotsford, where the council refused to grant zoning for a proposed homeless shelter in their downtown core despite media pressure. With a few exceptions, status quo appears to be the accepted level of performance for our council. Our taxes (include our 12 cents a litre for TransLink) continue to rise at a pace above inflation levels, yet our services and quality of life in Maple Ridge slip. Who can honestly say Maple Ridge is a better place to live than it was 15-20 years ago? Growth and change is inevitable, but is has to be done with vision and a ho-

Downtrodden Editor, The News: Re: Homeless number getting ‘crazy’ (Letters, Aug. 13). What’s unfortunate is that you or I or Maple Ridge council can’t do anything about it. It has turned into a political nightmare and no one wants to put their neck on the line to say that it’s wrong. These organizations have devalued property and have no regard for the residences that surround them. These organizations talk in the paper, but do not complete their actions. Tourists, visitors, friends and family have all commented on what a disgrace the downtown has turned into. I have lived here most of my life and I know when the Salvation Army moved in on that corner, things changed. The so-called do-gooders should be ashamed of themselves as they promote these homeless people to come in and enjoy the welcome mat, live in the bush all while getting fed and watered. The answer is to remove these organizations from the town core, look after our own community and not the vagrants from other communities. It wouldn’t be out of line to create a facility and get help or counselling, making it totally accessible for people to use away from downtown town, where people work and live. Editor, The News: Re: Where transit comes off the track (Sidewinder, Aug. 8). Sandy Macdougall offered your readers some insights as to the performance of the region’s SkyTrain system and the relative low-cost benefits of moving people with rapid transit versus the automobile. However, Mr. Macdougall’s view that residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are paying more than they should for transit service misses an important point: the cost of delivering service. It should be noted that from 2010 to 2013, transit use in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows increased 11 per cent, while the cost of delivering service went down 8.7 per cent. The median cost per passenger is now $2.25. By comparison, there is more transit service in the higher density areas of Vancouver, where the average cost is $1.08 per passenger. Maple Ridge is a large geographic area with a mix of land uses and population density. On an average working day, 20 people use the Ruskin–Haney Place community shuttle (C48) at an average cost of about $17 per passenger. This route does not operate with the frequency of other routes, but for the passengers who depend on it, it is there. But it is also one of the most expensive routes to service. Finally, Mr. Macdougall needs to be corrected on the appointment process to the TransLink board. When vacancies on the board of directors are available, the public is notified through advertisements in the local newspapers, with applications by anyone in the region invited. An independent panel screens the applications, then makes recommendations to the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation. he Iron Horse Youth Safe House was there when Teesha Sharma needed it. After fleeing difficulties at home, Sharma, 16, ended up at the doors of the youth shelter in central Maple Ridge. “I had nowhere else to go,” she said. “I remember getting there and I was scared to death.” The house took her in, gave her a place to sleep and food to eat, and offered a sympathetic ear and counselling. “It was the first time I felt safe.” Now she wants to ensure the shelter will be there for other kids and is holding a hot dog sale this Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., to raise some money and, more importantly, awareness. Changes to federal funding under the Homelessness Partnering Strategy mean the five-bed shelter, open since 2005, could close in January. It was the respite offered at the shelter that saved Sharma. Counsellors stayed with her when she was afraid to fall asleep. “It gave me a chance to find me, because I got so squashed down.” She learned that someone actually cared about her. When it was time to leave the shelter, after more than the usual month-long stay, staff helped her sign an agreement with the Ministry of Children and Family Development, allowing her to get her own apartment. She’s been there since, now seven years. “It’s very hard to be 16 and, all of a sudden, you’re living on your own.” Now, she’s about to graduate from a community support worker program at Discovery Community College so she, too, can help people in the same circumstances. Sharma actually finished high school early. “I graduated one and a half years early because I didn’t want to be at home, and so I would stay at school. And during the summer,

I was 16 when I graduated.” It was a tough time for her. “I think the last straw was I actually ended up trying to commit suicide because of it.” Following Robin William’s suicide earlier this month, it’s common topic of discussion. Sharma, though, has her own view. Suicide isn’t about wanting to die, it’s about wanting the mental pain and anguish and whatever is going on in your head to stop, she said. “It’s a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” adds colleague Brittany Frye. She, along with other students at Discovery Community College will be helping out with the hot dog sale. Alouette Home Start Society executive-director Stephanie Ediger said the future of the safe house remains in doubt. Transitional funding is in place until December. Under the new policy, announced this earlier year, the society can’t apply for its main source of funding, which amounts to $360,000, because its focus on counselling and services, instead of simply providing housing, no longer qualifies under the Housing First strategy. Social Development Canada, the implementation date for the new policy is April 1, 2015. After that, 65 per cent of Homelessness Partnering Strategy funds have to go to Housing First-type projects. Housing First focuses on first moving chronically or temporarily homeless people from the streets and emergency shelters into permanent housing, then offering support for addictions and mental illnesses. Housing First has been effective, Ediger said. “You need to make sure there are sufficient resources to provide the support,” for the people who now have a roof over their heads. The Alouette Home Start Society is now looking to the Ministry of Children and Families for funding to keep the youth safe house open. “I think it’s a reasonable request to make of the province,” said Ediger. The renovated house has five beds and kids between 13 and 18 years old can stay for up to a month. If the society does close, she added the society will continue to seek partnerships to provide the money to allow it to re-open. “We’re still in danger of closing. Just a couple more months of grace.”

It also alleges the board failed to monitor Smith’s activities and safety during the trip or properly screen the home stay family. The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School Board would not comment on the lawsuit, but stressed it takes the safety of students seriously. “Ensuring student safety on all field trips – not just those out of the country – is absolutely

our top priority, and that we have protocols and procedures in place to ensure this,” said Irena Pochop, school district spokesperson. In a response to Smith’s claim, the school board denied it was negligent. Before the trip, parents were advised of the living arrangements and rules were outlined. “The plaintiff voluntarily accepted the risk of injury when he chose

to ride in a motor vehicle driven by a minor and to not wear a seatbelt, when he knew or ought to have known that this was unsafe and contrary to the rules of the student exchange,” states the response. The board noted that students were only permitted to travel in vehicles driven by adults and were told to always wear seat belts. In their response, the board said Smith did

not request permission to ride in a vehicle driven by Lopez. The board alleges it was Smith who was negligent when it came to his own safety. It notes Smith should have known he was breaking the rules by riding in a vehicle driven by another student. He also should have known that Lopez’s ability to drive safely was impaired by “inexperience, drugs, alcohol, fatigue, illness, or some combination thereof.” A trial date has been set for Sept. 2015.

ore often than not, our furry family members are not part of summer vacation trips. Rescue shelters tend to shy away from boarding animals in their facilities. We are here to take in animals who have nowhere else to go, and a boarder will take room away from an animal in need. We also found out –the hard way – that sometimes long term boarders end up being abandoned at our facility. So unless your cat is a Katie’s Place alumni and needs a place to crash for a week or two, especially if it has medical issues we can tend to, then look elsewhere for a babysitter. There are numerous wonderful cat boarding facilities in most municipalities. They have indoor and outdoor areas, single rooms for single cats, comfortable furniture for the animals to relax on, and many other great amenities. Some vet clinics also have boarding facilities. The typical rate for boarding is $20 a day. Most boarders would be willing to work out some sort of deal for long-term guests. It is their livelihood, but let’s be honest, any reputable animal business is usually run by a kind person who, above all else, wants to help out the animals. The fear for rescuers and boarders is that if a person can’t find affordable accommodations for their pet while they go on vacation, the

alternative is that the animal gets dumped. The lucky ones find their way to a shelter. Others are simply left behind. The numbers don’t lie. In the summer months, adoption rates go down and intake rates go up. Going away in the summer is pretty much a given. Start looking for a boarder, live-in-house sitter, or a willing friend well ahead of time. Don’t leave it until the last minute and leave people scrambling. Be prepared that having your pet cared for will cost you. You put away for your vacations. You also need to put away for the boarding of the animals who can’t come with you. Find a young, responsible family member who would love nothing more than to enjoy some independent time while caring for your pet. Try to find places to go that allow animals. Many hotels actually welcome animals for a small extra fee. People really need to understand that an animal is part of the family. If you cannot include them in your trip, please make sure you plan ahead for them. Get quotes from boarders, make sure they have room, book in advance, spread the word among your friends and family. Any trip should factor in the money you will need to spend on boarding your animal. Animals are not a September to June toy. Northern Rain returns to Rock the Ridge

ockey, firefighting and drumming are not activities typically associated with heart problems. But 18-year-old Northern Rain drummer and former minor hockey team captain Matt Stockwell is hardly typical. Now that he’s a high school graduate and his heart surgery is out of the way, Stockwell is thinking about what his future might incorporate. “I always thought I wanted to try firefighting but figured my heart might prevent that from happening,” he explains. Stockwell was in B.C. Children’s Hospital in July for a four-and-ahalf-hour surgical procedure called catheter ablation. A medical procedure performed to treat some types of irregular heart rates, otherwise known as arrhythmia, catheter ablation is when surgeons guide a series of catheters into a blood vessel leading up to a person’s heart. Through a separate machine, they are able to send energy to the heart through one of the catheters. That in turn destroys small areas of heart tissue where abnormal heartbeats may cause an arrhythmia to start. So impressed with the support he received from surgical and support staff, Stockwell was more than willing to take part again in the B.C.

Jade – are from Maple Ridge. Concert promoter Sara Stanley says the event raised $1,100 for the foundation last year. She picked the event’s charitable organization recipient based on a personal experience she recalled vividly. “I am a recent graduate of Garibaldi Secondary School, but finish-

ing Grade 11, I became aware of a classmate who had recently been diagnosed with cancer,” she said. “I followed her journey through Instagram – where she would constantly be posting photos from her room at B.C. Children’s. Her courage to post those photos inspired the event. I have always loved music and had re-

alized the foundation would benefit greatly from a charity concert.” Stockwell’s band Northern Rain performed at Rock the Ridge last year. A drummer since his parents purchased him a flea market kit when he was six, Stockwell says they are excited to return to the event that they will be closing for this time around. An alternative four-piece band with a rock-pop-punk fusion feel, Northern Rain, which has been compared to the band Hedley, has been writing its own songs since beginning. The members have a collection of 17 live performance and promotional music videos, more than 1,000 Likes on their Facebook page, a demo album and another one on the way, several awards and dozens of gig credits to their name. Although fans have already labelled them as one of B.C.’s best teen bands, their roots are still humble and include Stockwell’s parents helping with band promotion and practicing in his family’s living room two days a week. “We have to kick them out for a few hours each time,” Stockwell says with a laugh.

The expression third time's a charm resonates with Maple Ridge singer Iris Del Castillo, who is back at the Pacific National Exhibition this week to compete in the annual Star Showdown amateur competition. Although she could not remember the exact number of times she has performed at the PNE before, Del Castillo admits she has not been successful in walking away with any of the competition's cash prizes, which range from $300 for the top semi-finalist to $5,000 for the overall grand prize winner. This time around, Del Castillo believes she may have a winning edge. For the first time, the classically trained 26-year-old alto has abandoned her recorded back-up routine for an acoustic performance with a solo guitarist. She also dropped her initial ballad choice for the song that shows her range – fast-paced single Shark in the Water by U.K. artist VV Brown. "I had to change my song choice a few times," Del Castillo said. No stranger to competition, Del Castillo, who has been competing since the age of 15, has participated in many contests and placed or won almost all of them. In the provincial competition, Variety's Got Talent, which is evaluated by celebrity and industry judges, and

Vancouver's PNT Idol, Del Castillo placed among the top finalists. On cruises to the Mediterranean, Hawaii and Alaska, Del Castillo was the contest winner. And in a karaoke c h a mp i o n ship held in Surrey, Del Castillo took the secondplace title. These days, Iris Del Castillo however, she describes her focus as less competitive and more individually minded. "The best I can do is be the best I can be," she says. Although more relaxed in her approach to competition, Del Castillo still follows ritualistic practices during her lead-up preparation time. Prior to a performance, she makes sure she drinks plenty of the gingerhoney tea, which her mom prepares. She also belts out her favorite songs at her church hall, St. Luke's Parish, before she invites her mom, also a singer, to watch and critique her act. "She gives me great feedback," maintains Del Castillo. Star Showdown 2014 competitors were performing in the semi-finals yesterday and finals today.

or the first time in 23 years, the Maple Ridge Burrards have advanced past the first round of the WLA playoffs. The Burrards played out of Vancouver then. The senior men’s lacrosse team moved to Maple Ridge in 1996, and had never won a playoff series here until Saturday. The Burrards defeated the Burnaby Lakers 10-8 at home to win the series in six games and will now face the Victoria Shamrocks for the league championship and a berth in the Mann Cup – the national finals. Maple Ridge led 3-2 after the first period Saturday on three goals by Peyton Lupul, a junior affiliate player with the Burnaby Lakers who dressed for just his second game with the Burrards this season. “We just asked him to chip in and play hard,” Burrards head coach Chris Gill said of Lupul. “We thought if he got a goal that would be good. He got three.” Curtis Dickson, playing just his second game in a month due to injury, shook off more of the rust he showed in his first game back and recorded three goals and three assists for the Burrards, all six of his points coming after the first period. “Expect more to come,” Gill said of Dickson, who led the league in scoring the previous season. The Burrards led 7-5 after the second, then went up 10-6 early in the

Scigliano was named WLA rookie of the year last week, while Gill was selected coach of the year. Gill led the Burrards to a 9-8-1 record and third place in his first season as head coach. Scigliano led the league with a 6.65 goals against average and .838 save percentage, while going 6-6-1.

Reid Muller of Golden Ears Athletics won two bronze medals at the National Legion Youth Track and Field Championship this past weekend at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley. Muller came third in the 1,500-metre event with a time of 3:55.43. He also came third in the 800m, setting a person best time of 1:52.51. Muller was one of 12 athletes from the local track club at the national event. Erick Villanueva placed fifth in long jump, with a distance of 5.99m. He also came eighth in the 100m (11.81 seconds). Bryce Mackenzie came sixth in high jump (1.70m). Sara Hoffman finished seventh in long jump (5.00m). Chisom Obioha placed 10th in long jump (4.87m). A Golden Ears Athletics team came sixth (4:21.21) in the four-by400m women’s relay, while another finished seventh (48 seconds) in the four-by100m men’s relay. Other club members who competed at the national championships: Mikaela Smart (1,500m); Madelyn Huston (800m); Christina Johnstone (800m); Zack Kuzyk (high jump); Darian Smerdal (high jump), Alex Ross (2,000m); and Jayden Brown (300m).

Neptunes earn gold at B.C.s

Megan Neale of the Haney Neptunes earned a gold medal in 50-metre butterfly and a silver in 100m fly at the provincial championships this past weekend in Kamloops with times putting her eighth all-time in the B.C. Summer Swimming Association Top 60 hall of fame. Neale finished the Division 6 girls’ 50m fly in 30.03 seconds. She also came 10th in 50m freestyle. The Neptunes Div. 2 boys’ 200m freestyle relay team also won gold at the provincials. Members of that team include Declan Lee Chin, Jack Hayhoe, Jordan Longmuir and Joel Blanco. Chin, Blanco, Hayhoe and Alexander Preocanin came second in the 200m medley relay, as well as in the 200m regional medley. Individually, Blanco earned silver in 50m and 100m free, and bronze in 50m fly. He also came fifth in 100m medley. In Div. 3 boys, Ethan Benoit came third in 100m medley. In Div. 1 girls, Mina Edwards, Isabella Senevirante, Mackenzy Clark and Vanessa McNabb came second in 200m relay. Edwards, Senevirante, McNabb and Stephanie Schneider came third in another 200m relay. In Div. 5 girls, Ava Morrant came second in 50m free and 100m fly, as well as third in 100m back and fourth in 100m free. Katarina Preocanin came second in 100m back and third in 200m medley, then ninth in 100m breast stroke. Morrant and Preocanin, along with Yuri Cowie and Taylen Lee Chin came third in 200m free relay.

GREEN, Doreen Palmira October 19, 1933 August 12, 2014 Doreen (nee Recchi) passed away peacefully in Maple Ridge after a lengthy illness. Beloved wife, mother, aunt, and Nonna, she was born in Trail, BC, graduated from St. Joseph’s Nursing School, Victoria, and lived most of her life with her family in Port Moody. Doreen is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, David Green, her daughters Pamela (Jeff), Andrea (Pete), and Maria (Ercole), 6 grandchildren (Erik, Sydney, Sienna, Talia, Sophia, Francesca), her siblings Angela, Dorothy, Donny, cousin Angela White and many nieces and nephews. Our Mom was kind, funny, resilient and taught us all the meaning of love and family. She will always be the light in our lives. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Holyrood Manor for their many years of compassionate care. A funeral mass will be held Friday, August 22nd at 1:00 pm at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 22561 - 121st Avenue, Maple Ridge, with reception to follow. Cecil Gjaltema aged 80 years passed away peacefully at Mission Memorial Hospital on August 14, 2014. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Betty Gjaltema; daughter Cory, son Dwayne (Jennifer); grandchildren Cassandra (Jesse), Brayden (Molly) and Tyler; great grandchildren Kale-a, Kailani, Keanna, Keegan and Lucas as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is predeceased by his son Doug, two sisters and one brother.
