Search digital pages back to 1891 Jennifer Feinberg The Progress A digital window has just opened onto Chilliwack’s storied past. Ninety years of the Chilliwack Progress newspaper can now be searched online. Chilliwack Museum and Archives announced the successful digitization of The Progress, for the years 1891 to 1983. “The Chilliwack Museum and Archives is thrilled to be able to direct researchers to this new search engine,” said Museum archivist Shannon Bettles. The high-quality digital files can be found at www.theprogress. newspapers.com, and can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Online visitors can browse The Progress years at a time, seek out specific dates and issues, and even clip and print articles. The Chilliwack Progress Digitization project is part of the museum’s overall digital strategy geared to improving access to archival records. Phase I is now complete, said Bettles, just two years since the idea for the project was conceived. “The long running and continuous printing of the publication means that it is a great source for glimpsing into everyday events, news, and daily life in Chilliwack since 1891,” said Bettles. “While it means patrons will undertake more research at home, Archives staff are prepared for an increase in follow-up questions and visits from guests as they learn more information is available from other records held at the Archives.” Continued: PROGRESS/ p11

Pickets going up today at Chilliwack schools Katie Bartel The Progress Instead of preparing their classrooms for the new school year, Chilliwack teachers will be back on the picket lines starting Wednesday morning. With no sign of a negotiated deal on the horizon, the Chilliwack Teachers’ Association has confirmed that all school sites, including the board office, will be picketed Wednesday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.. If the strike continues into the new school year, so will the

pickets. Chilliwack CUPE 411 has also confirmed members will not cross any picket line, and that many will be out on the lines in support of teachers. “It’s time to remind people that things are still not happening and to crank up pressure on the government to get a deal done by September 2,” said CTA president Clint Johnston. “Hopefully this pressure at the beginning of the year gets us back to the table, gets some mediation happening, like we’ve asked for, and gets a deal done

quickly at the beginning of the year when we still have time to fill out most of the year in a normal fashion, and where children will still get their education like their used to.” The BC Teachers’ Federation implemented a full-scale walkout in June, two weeks prior to year end, at the behest of its members. After months of butting heads with the BC Provincial School Employers’ Association, the provincial government’s chief negotiators, they had come to an impasse.

The summer months were fairly silent; no pickets in Chilliwack, aside from a few earlier this month outside the offices of Chilliwack MLAs John Martin and Laurie Throness. “We made a decision, locally, to not picket over summer to allow CUPE workers to continue to earn a salary; we felt that was the right decision to make,” said Johnston. Infected horses serve as West Nile virus reminder Cache Creek tests first sign of virus this year Jeff Nagel Black Press Positive tests for West Nile virus in two horses near Cache Creek serve as a fresh reminder that humans could also be infected by the mosquito-borne disease, health officials say. “It’s not too surprising,” said deputy provincial health officer Bonnie Henry. “But it would be the first indication we have this year of any West Nile virus activity.” She noted the two horses haven’t yet been confirmed as West Nile cases by the province. They were reported Monday by the Society

of B.C. Veterinarians, which cautioned owners of horses against scrimping on their vaccinations. There have been three bitten-inB.C. West Nile infections among people over the years, in addition to the more than 40 other cases contracted out of province. All the local infections happened in 2009 in the Southern Interior, Henry said, with most of the positive tests of mosquitoes and birds occurring in the South Okanagan. Henry said horses act as “end hosts” like humans – they don’t act as a virus reservoir like corvid birds and increase the risk of transmission to people.

“This is another indicator that West Nile virus can be out there,” she said. “This would be the highest risk time of year.” Most people bitten by an infected mosquito have no symptoms but in about 20 per cent of cases, those infected develop a fever, headaches and rash. About one in 150 will experience severe complications such as meningitis and about one in 1,000 will die. The best way to avoid West Nile virus is to prevent mosquito bites: wear light-coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants, especially in the early morning and evening; use repellent with DEET and lemon eucalyptus oil; and eliminate standing water in your yard.

ICBC is asking regulators to approve a 5.2 per cent increase to basic auto insurance rates. The public auto insurer said the rate hike would cost the average customer an extra $40 per year if it’s approved by the B.C. Utilities Commission. A previously approved 5.2 per cent rate hike that took effect in 2013-14 means drivers will soon be paying 10.4 per cent more than they did in 2012 for basic coverage. ICBC blamed the latest increase on ongoing pressure from rising injury claims costs to crash victims for pain and suffering, future care and lost wages Bodily injury claims totalled $1.9 billion in 2013, up $73 million from 2012 and by more than $500 million from five years earlier. Legal and medical costs are also up. Drivers’ rapidly growing use of personal electronic devices behind the wheel is one of the factors ICBC cited for the rise in injury claims. Distracted driving is the second leading cause of fatal car crashes in B.C. – killing 88 people a year – and is the leading cause of rear-end crashes that often cause injuries, spokesman Adam Grossman said. A new campaign against distracted driving is to roll out in September. The rate hike is to take effect Nov. 1 on an interim basis while the BCUC reviews the application.

Mining disaster has lesson for Chilliwack: coalition Jennifer Feinberg The Progress A coalition of First Nations, sport fishing groups and environmentalists is warning that a Mt. Polley type disaster could happen in Chilliwack if a proposed waste recycling plant is eventually built. Reps from the Hazardous Waste Coalition are drawing a parallel between the risk of building a waste facility on Cannor Road — as proposed by Aevitas Inc. for recycling hazardous waste — and the mining disaster now impacting watersheds in northern B.C. around Likely and Quesnel. “The risk is just too high, said Sto:lo Tribal Council Grand Chief Kat Pennier. “Our think-

ing must always take in to account the consequences of a disastrous spill or meltdown to the ecosystem, our home. Part of the concern is the belief that regulatory agencies are understaffed and that regulations are weak, according to the press release. The coalition is urging “Mayor and Council of Chilliwack to avoid any and all opportunities that place the Fraser River and its tributaries and communities at risk, adding however that it “supports the building of a hazardous waste facility in a responsible manner that does not directly endanger the ecosystem. Despite assurances by Aevitas reps of construction plans and

multi-barrier engineering that would prevent a spill into the river, the coalition is not convinced. City of Chilliwack reps would not comment on the coalition’s latest news release. They are directing anyone with further questions to www.chilliwack. com/aevitas.

Organ donation isn’t for everyone. Depending on religious beliefs or personal preference, some people choose to not donate their organs after death. But for those of us who don’t have any stipulations about organ donation, the question remains — why don’t more of us register to become donors? According to B.C. Transplant, there is a critical shortage of organs available for transplant not only in B.C., but all over the world. In 2013, B.C. had the highest living donor rate in the country of 28 per million and 14.5 per million in deceased donor rate – equalling the national average. There were 346 transplants and the number of organ donors (130 living and 67 deceased) increased as well. But the numbers are still very low compared to the number of people that die in the province each year. Volunteers with B.C. Transplant say some people still aren’t aware they even have to register to become a donor. Fifteen years ago, the method of becoming a donor included simply putting a dot on your drivers licence. Now, that method is no longer valid and people wishing to become donors must register directly with B.C. Transplant. After death, each person has the ability to help up to 75 different people and save or extend the lives of as many as seven people by becoming an organ donor. Currently there are 473 people in B.C. waiting for vital organs. Many of these people will wait years for an organ to become available, and for some it may be too late. As of June, only 13 per cent of people living in the Fraser Health Region had registered as donors – 18 per cent in Chilliwack. The numbers speak for themselves. More of us need to step up and take the few minutes it requires to register as an organ donor at www. transplant.bc.ca. You could end up saving a life right in your own backyard. ~ Black Press

B.C. V IEWS

Navigating the ruts in the road to farmland changes VICTORIA – The month-long Agricultural Land Commission consultation closed Aug. 22, and the B.C. government is compiling the feedback received from a province-wide tour and invitation to comment. I can’t tell you much about the official input. The consultation sessions were by invitation only, with no media allowed, and the submissions via website are also not public. I reached Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick as he was traveling around B.C. with his camper van, conducting his own meetings with farmers. He’s not saying much either, except that a summary of the findings should be made public in September as the government considers new regulations. The aim of this exercise is to consider relaxing rules around secondary farmland uses in the

Interior, Kootenay and North regions, as well as food processing and retail sales of food and beverages on farmland. Also under consideration is allowing breweries and distilleries, as wine and cider production are now allowed, and relaxing rules to permit more off-farm products to be sold Tom from farms. FLETCHER Letnick defended the 30-day summer consultation as adequate. It’s based on 11 questions developed with staff, farm groups and local government. He’s also not counting how many emails were stacked up by proponents or critics. “I’m not conducting a plebiscite,” Letnick said. “What I’m try-

ing to do is come up with the best balance of recommendations to make to government that can hold their own based on the idea and the potential positive and negative consequences.” NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham was more forthcoming. She was invited to the formal sessions, and also won’t talk about them directly. But she’s not backing away from her criticisms. The government is proposing to bypass the Agricultural Land Commission for several kinds of decisions, including subdivision for family use or into properties of 160 acres or more. “I think the general idea was that people trust the ALC to make that decision, and it should still go through the commission,” Popham said. “Actually the commission has been making those decisions anyway, and I think they’ve been quite

fair when somebody applies.” She said farmers also aren’t sold on the notion of easing the rules for secondary businesses. “You will already find situations where there’s, let’s say a welding shop or something like that attached to somebody’s residence who lives on ALR land,” Popham said. “That sort of stuff has been allowed, but it’s always had to go through the ALC or some sort of process that’s been in place. This leaves that process out, and so I think that’s the problem people are having.” She noted that non-farm activities have a way of growing until they become the main business. A reader who attended the Kelowna session said even winery operators aren’t thrilled about the proposal to enlarge retail space and allow sales of wine or beer not made on site. He said “not one”

participant there liked the idea of increasing industrial activity such as food processing or retailing. And he agreed with Popham that the ALC is doing a good job with subdivision applications. Popham also clarified the situation with the leased craft gin distillery on her own Vancouver Island farm. It started as a winery, and the conversion needed only local government approval because the production facility was already considered and taxed as light industrial. Victoria Gin has been a model for the government’s push to allow distilleries, breweries or meaderies on farmland. Given the B.C. Liberals’ love of liberalized liquor, I expect that change to go through. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Twitter: @tomfletcherbc Email: tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Report dangerous drivers After reading Graham Beattie’s letter (‘Watch out for texting motorists’) I wanted to assist your readers with my own experience. It seems that not only do pedestrians need to be extra vigilant, us vehicular drivers must also do the same. I was nearly T-boned on Thursday night, July 31st, about 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Vedder Road and South Sumas. When the light turned green for me, I noted that the oncoming vehicles had stopped and I was just about to proceed into the intersection.

Just then, a large black SUV ran through the intersection at a very high rate of speed. A concrete wall had blocked my longer view of the lane in which they appeared; had I seen them in the distance approaching at that speed I would have known what was about to happen. Needless to say, I was quite shaken by the experience, as were two other drivers who had witnessed the event. Even though I was unable to note the registration plate due to their speed, I went to the RCMP office to report what had happened.

all new 2015

rzr 900

I was advised that in the future if this should occur, and if I was able to secure the registration plate, that I should call it into the RCMP. Furthermore, I would have to be prepared to appear in court as a witness. I would gladly due so, to send a message to those drivers who consider stopping for a red light to be only an option. Mr. Beattie was able to secure the registration plate but he didn’t mention if he reported it, I would encourage him to do so.

(Bottling facility eyed for Harrison Mills, Progress, Aug. 22) It is with this type of entrepreneurial sponsorship that these types of smaller communities can grow and produce long-term economic growth and productive development,

with minimum ecological impact as well. Chris has already proven that this is possible through his current endeavours, while maintaining harmony with his and our pristine environment. There is no system, in any economic proposal that is one hundred per cent perfect to the environment or a fix all, to all members of any community. But, having said that, it is up to all of us to weigh the long term good versus the bad. It is this weighing of good and bad, with the proper checks and balances,

that it comes upon us to choose the greater good, with the least harm to all of the community and to weigh the ecological impact, which is relatively low, if not nil. It is through Chris and his family, that historically have put this area of the eastern Fraser Valley on the map of B.C. That their dedication to the growth of their families, their communities, and the growth of the Province of B.C., that make all of us stand proud as Canadians as a whole. This proposal might

Annual bike sale a ‘win-win’ event Chilliwack Restorative Justice More than 100 bicycles will be on the auction block as the Chilliwack Restorative Justice and Youth Advocacy Association hosts its annual bike sale on Sept. 6. The event, which is a major fundraiser for the association, begins at 10 a.m. sharp at Bernard elementary school. Each year the group receives unclaimed bicycles from the City of Chilliwack and the communities of Agassiz and Hope. “The money raised from

the bikes plays a very important part in subsidizing this tremendous program,” said Peter Devette, Restorative Justice executive board member and sale coordinator. “It takes the community coming out to make this a great sale.” Restorative Justice supports the RCMP, School District and Loss Prevention services in Chilliwack as well as Agassiz, Harrison and Hope. This program allows first time offenders an opportunity to repair the damage

done by an offense. Some of bikes available for sale are high-end, Devette said, others a little tender loving care. Viewing of the bikes begins at 9 a.m. and the auction begins at 10 a.m. sharp and will run until 11 a.m. The carwash begins at 9 a.m. and runs until noon. Bikes are sold to the highest bidder and only cash is accepted. This year organizers are offering something more. “We plan to make this a bigger event by adding a car

wash by donation for those who want to contribute to our program,” said executive director Kathy Funk. By supporting this event, it is a win/win for both restorative justice and for those looking for a good deal on a bike, she added. “Come out and support this great organization and ride away on your gently used bike,” she said. Bernard elementar y is located at 45465 Bernard Ave. For more information contact Kathy Funk at 604.393.3023.

Early birds on buses will benefit from changes Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Three Chilliwack bus routes will be starting earlier and running later as of August 31. As part of the already announced Chilliwack Transit System expansion for 2014, longer service days are in store for three of the busiest routes along Vedder, Evans and Promontory. City of Chilliwack and BC Transit officials say an extra 1,300 service hours are being added to the local conventional transit system, and another 1,000 hours to

handDART. Early birds who ride Route 1 Vedder can take advantage of the 6:57 a.m., 7:17 a.m., and 7:37 a.m. trips leaving from Yale and Menzies Monday to Friday, and the added 7:10 a.m. run from the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV). The bus will also run an hour later, leaving UFV at 11:10 p.m. on weekdays. Route 2 Evans will start an hour earlier Monday through Friday, from the Cottonwood Mall starting at 6:36 a.m. and at 7:03 a.m. from the downtown exchange on Yale. The hours will be extend-

ed in the evening, too. The last trip leaves the downtown exchange at 10:03 p.m., which is an hour later than the current schedule. The final run from the Cottonwood Mall will now head out at 10:25 p.m. Route 4 Promontor y will see extra evening trips Monday through Friday. The last run from the Cottonwood Mall is at 10:15 p.m. (the current final trip is 9:15) and the last trip leaving Teskey and Sylvan will be 10:45 p.m. (the current final trip is 8:05 p.m.). Officials say handyDART service will also grow by 1,000 annual hours with an

added vehicle in Chilliwack. The extra hours will assist registered riders with more travel options during peak periods. “Residents of Agassiz, Harrison and Chilliwack continue to embrace public transit.” said ChilliwackHope MLA Laurie Throness. “The addition of 2,300 service hours highlights just how much residents in this region support their local transit system.” Ridership has increased with the transit improvements. “We are pleased that so many residents have chosen to utilize a more environ-

Maxwell Newhouse uses a 300-year-old Japanese burning technique called shou suji ban where he chars wood multiple times and then treats each piece to give his ‘carbon furniture’ a rich, black finish. Bottom right: Newhouse’s 10.5 ft. driftwood bass which is now on display at the PNE. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Black beauty revealed in burnt driftwood The Progress Maxwell Newhouse thought he created something completely unique. Always needing to reinvent himself, he wanted to try something new, so he began burning pieces of his driftwood collection last winter, on New Year’s Eve. “In my own little world, I thought that I invented something brand new,” he said. “I thought if I can burn this and come up with a finish that’s black — and one of the most popular trends is white rooms with white walls — I thought this black furniture would fit beautifully.” Turns out Newhouse didn’t invent the charred wood finish. The Japanese did. Hundreds of years ago. It’s called shou suji ban which literally translates to ‘burnt cedar board’. It’s a Japanese technique

that’s been around for more than 300 years. The reason it’s so successful is because it causes the wood to be fire resistant, insect resistant, and the black finish will last 80 years. The Japanese use shou suji ban for residential housing, such as on roof shingles and siding. Newhouse uses the technique on his driftwood furniture. He burns each piece of wood four times with a blowtorch. “The first burn you have to wear a mask because there’s soot everywhere. I’m dirty from head to toe, and I look like a chimney sweep,” he says. “By the time I get to the fourth burn, there’s no soot at all. I don’t understand what I’m doing, I just know it works. Then, I have a secret treatment where everything is set in so that the colour cannot be transferable.” “You can sit on it in a white wed-

ding dress and you’d be fine,” he adds. He calls it carbon furniture. “It’s hard for people to appreciate it because it’s hard to get around the fact that it’s burnt. The black isn’t like a paint or a coating. It’s actually part of the wood, it’s in the wood, and it’s permanent,” he said. “When it’s just the (unburnt) wood, the colours are very beautiful and you become distracted by the wood alone. However, when it’s just pure black, you have a tendency to pay attention to pure form.” The repurposed wood he uses comes from bonfires or off the beach. He loves searching for driftwood on Vancouver Island — his favourite spot is Campbell River. The driftwood is “something no one wants, and I like that,” he said. “The wood can even be rotten because I can burn right to

the point where I get to the fresh wood which makes it even more interesting.” Newhouse has a eureka-like moment, as if he’s found gold, whenever he finds the right piece of driftwood. “I find a piece and I’m stunned by its beauty. I sneak away like a thief; like a hoarder. I don’t even have to use it; it can just sit there and I can look at it and I’m happy.” He has a workshop full of driftwood, stacked from floor to ceiling, that he’s collected over the years. “I’ve burnt myself into a corner because I’ve made so many pieces of furniture and no one knows about it,” he said. But now, his carbon furniture is on its way to becoming known by many. Newhouse was recently commissioned by the City of Burnaby to build a large stand-up bass out of driftwood. It’s 10.5 ft. tall and

weighs about 200-250 lbs. Though the piece is not made entirely out of burnt wood, he has added a couple of charred driftwood pieces into the bass, which is now on display at the PNE along with a large harp and drum he made last Christmas. Folks can check out Newhouse’s driftwood furniture called ‘eco sculptures’ located on Miller Drive on the PNE grounds in between the entrance to horse racing track and behind the livestock building. “I like that I’m using pieces that I’ve had for 10 years, and that I finally found a place for them,” said Newhouse. “I like that Burnaby points me in different directions. They come up with ideas that I would have never imagined and that’s what an artist needs: someone to push them to where they think they can’t go.” photo@theprogress.com twitter.com/PhotoJennalism

Gardening green thumb Jack Kouwenhoven Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Jack Kouwenhoven has been gardening with gusto since he was 10 years old. Hale and hearty at the age of 85, he’s been tending a garden for an astounding 75 years. “Gardening is my passion, he says simply. He loves gardening, and sharing his considerable knowledge about it with others. Kouwenhoven is a proud member of the Chilliwack Garden Club, and the Chilliwack Schools Garden Program, and the International Order of Foresters. He helps kick off the Plant A Row Grow A Row program with Food Matters Chilliwack every spring with an introductory workshop. “When growing vegetables, you’re in complete control, says Kouwenhoven. “I grow a lot from seed because you can choose which varieties you want. The immense health benefits are part of the allure, and he particularly enjoys getting young people excited about backyard gardening. He’s been cultivating fruit trees, grapes, vegetables and more from

his home on a half-acre property on Yale Road east. He also worked in silviculture for BC Forest Service during most of his working life, as well as stints as a carpenter, and hardware store assistant manager.

The garden is what makes his heart beat a little faster. “To grow something yourself is interesting and exciting. He first learned how to be a successful food gardener, as a

child, from his father, growing up in Maassluis, Holland before the Second World War. It’s part of what got the Kouwenhoven family through the ordeal, he figures. Jack’s father, Dirk, had an allot-

ment garden that they tended to feed their family of seven, growing potatoes, cabbage, turnips, cauliflower and more. They grew lots of potatoes, of course, and potatoes were piled up for use as rocket fuel during the war. When he came to Chilliwack, it was to help his father build a house next to the old fairgrounds. That started a lifelong connection to the fair. He’s been growing vegetables to show at the fair for 50 years, and this year was no different. He entered 60 exhibits for consideration by the fair judges. What do they look for? Uniformity, he says. The educational aspects of showing at the fair are very appealing to him. “I always like to share what I know. People often tell me I should write a book. I need to pass on some of these tricks. He likes to show young people for example, how beets are a twofor-one vegetable, with the beautiful greens that are edible as well as the red base of the beetroot. He’s in his 19th year of working with student gardeners for the Schools Garden program. Continued: GREEN/ p17

Sharing 75 years of garden knowledge GARDEN from page 15 “There’s nothing like seeing the excitement on a child’s face when they bring you a carrot that they themselves have grown. They always want me to taste it, too,” Kouwenhoven says. It reminds him sometimes of how hard they struggled to survive, with the help of the family farm during the war, without refrigeration. “We also didn’t have the nice soil that we get to work with now.” So many things have changed over the decades. Raised bed gardening has become a big deal in recent years, and is ideal for seniors

and anyone with mobility issues. “Raised beds are a godsend. It’s important to build them narrow enough so you can pull weeds from both sides.” In recent years, he’s sought out lighter tools, like hoes, and avoids kneeling, except during planting. Overall, the 2014 garden year has been fantastic, with lots of sunshine, but not too hot temperatures. “I cannot ever remember a season as perfect as this one has been.” Anyone interested in his gardening advice can check out his blog, jacksgardentips.wordpress.com

ElderCollege Chilliwack has a new semester starting in October with a range of intriguing course offerings for lifelong learners. New this year is the Android Tablet course, says Carol Lees, ElderCollege coordinator. “The Fall semester begins the week of October 1, and we are offering a roster of courses that appeal to every interest, from fine arts to technology,” she says. There are 23 courses for 2014 being offered to enrich lives and expand knowledge. “Some are new, some are revised and some are back by popular demand.” Other than computer courses, many of the regular classes offered every semester, contain all new content and new presenters. That information is also on the website. The computer courses in particular are always in great demand, as members enjoy keeping up to date with the latest technological advances — and keeping up with the grandkids.

Workshop offers local insights into dementia A local organization is trying to stave off the effects of dementia for Chilliwack’s aging population. The Chilliwack branch of the Alzheimer’s Society is hosting a free workshop, Getting to Know Dementia, on Sept. 3 in an effort to increase awareness about the condition that is affecting more and more in the area. Alzheimer’s disease is the second most feared disease for Canadians, said Jude Weir, support and education coordinator for Chilliwack-Hope. And with many Chilliwack residents 50 years or older, it’s becoming more of a pressing health issue locally. The introductory workshop will review the challenges of receiving a diagnosis of dementia. Participants will also learn about the different types of support available, how to begin planning for the future, and strategies for living well with dementia.

“Participants will receive basic information on dementia and the impact is has on individuals, their caregivers, and their support networks,” said Weir. The workshop is intended for people experiencing early symptoms of dementia, as well as family members or friends who are currently supporting a person with a recent dementia diagnosis. The workshop is not intended for the general public or health-care providers. The workshop runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Minto Room at Evergreen Hall, located on Corbould Street. Pre-registration is required. For more information and to register, contact Jude Weir at 604-702-4603. For more information on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias visit www. alzheimerbc.org.

They call themselves the ‘face lift’ committee, and they’re bringing the Chilliwack Senior Recreation Centre into the 21st century. “We have a new board of directors with visions for the future, says secretary Marnie Kidder. With the baby boomer generation now entering or nearing their senior years, there will soon be a wave of Chilliwack residents moving into retirement. “We’re trying really hard to make a differ-

ence. Not only for the current members, but also the baby boomers who will be coming through, says Kidder. “There’s a boarded up building right cross the street. We don’t want to look like a derelict building. For years the building has needed a makeover, both inside and out, to draw more people in. Now renovations have finally been done. To start, they have wifi. With more people owning smart phones and tablets, installing wifi was a no-brainer, says Kidder. Senior rec centre welcomes CENTRE from page 20 Senior Recreation Centre’ in dark green letters. That’s been painted over and replaced with eight, large signs — five along the College Street side, and three along the Victoria Avenue side. Many of the signs advertise the variety of activities offered by the Chilliwack Senior Recreation Centre: ‘Home of the Chilliwack Country Jammers’ reads one sign, ‘Bingo, Everyone Welcome,’ is written on another. Head inside and they have newly built round tables, made by one of their volunteers, that seat four or five comfortably. “We are trying to get rid of the institutional feel and get people into a more conversation feel,” says Kidder. They also installed wall-to-wall curtains in the main room. Pulled open, the wall features several displays and photo collages from some of the groups that gather at the centre. Close the curtains and you have a clean backdrop perfect for hall rentals. Many people don’t even know the Chilliwack Senior Recreation Centre exists, let alone the fact that they rent out their hall. It’s a less expensive option for birthday parties, weddings and other gatherings, she says. The centre also has a marble floor which is “great for tap dancing”, Kidder adds. “This is all accessible to the community. And we have a full kitchen which can also be rented out.” The kitchen is put to good use every Sunday morning where The Bridge of Chilliwack — a faith-based charitable organization that helps feed the hungry —

comes in to serve 100-plus people during the weekly Less Fortunate Citizens Breakfast. The centre is wheelchair accessible and portions of the hall can be rented, not just the whole area. They also offer info sessions for seniors, which are usually free of charge. Most recently, they held a clinic to test hearing, and another time BCAA came to talk about driving and how one’s vision changes when one ages. “I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback from the members as they come in the door. They come in from the dreary outside and it’s bright and cheery in here,” says Kidder. They will be having an open house and grand reopening ceremony to celebrate the new renovations in the fall. Current activities at the centre include Bingo on Mondays (12:30 to 3:15 p.m.), rug hooking on Tuesdays (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.), arts and crafts at 1 p.m. and doubles bridge from 1-4 p.m. on Wednesdays, al-anon meetings on Thursdays (7:30 to 8:30 p.m.), acoustic country jam sessions at 7 p.m. on Saturdays ($4 admission, bring your own instrument), and the Less Fortunate Citizens Breakfast from 9 to 10:30 a.m. every Sunday. The Chilliwack Senior Recreation Centre is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and pool hall hours are noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. All hours are dependant on volunteer availability. Membership is $20 per year and anyone aged 50 or older can join. Chilliwack hot spot for home sales At a time when home sales typically cool down, sales in Chilliwack and area are keeping pace with the hot summer temperatures. In July, a total of 236 homes sold and while down slightly from the previous month, sales solidly outpaced the number of homes sold in July of 2013 by more than 30. More encouraging is the type of properties selling and the average time on market to sell, according to the Chilliwack and District Real Estate President (CADREB), Jake Siemens. “Single family homes are still leading the way, which indicates the ability for people to move up,” he explained. “Also, the sale of vacant residential land took a jump, indicating renewed builder confidence in the residential real estate market”. The average number of days on market for a listed single detached home, townhome or condo is between 52 and 59 days, down significantly from a few months ago. In July, the highest number of sales (39) were homes in the $300,00 - $349,999 range, followed by 33 sales in the $400,000 - $499,999 range. The total value of units sold in July totaled over

$75.3 million. The average price of a home in Chilliwack and area is $305,000, seasonally adjusted for the year to date. The CADREB President notes that in order to maintain a buoyant market, more listings are needed. “To maintain a good supply and demand situation which benefits both the seller and buyer, more inventory is needed. Despite sales far outpacing last year, we are doing so with 75 fewer home listings on the market than this time last year”. There are currently 1,750 active listings on the market. If you are considering selling, don’t wait until the fall to list. Public sectors and corporations often do hiring in the slower summer months, which creates an immediate demand for housing. To find out how much your home is worth in this brisk local market, or to investigate getting into or moving up in the housing market, contact any of the qualified and experienced 265 local REALTORS® with CADREB. – Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board Press Release

Licensed since May 1980, I have been a part of the many changes Chilliwack has undergone. The Real Estate profession during that time has also undergone many changes. The introduction of Disclosure and Agency. Disclosure took all the uncertainty away. Simply put, disclose all things known to all parties involved. Agency, a clear understanding of the relationship you are entering into with your Realtor! I now enter my senior years as a Realtor, with my knowledge and experience I bring added value to the process of preparing you to make a well informed decision whether you are buying or selling. The magic of ornamental grasses The appreciation of ornamental grasses is still skyrocketing. It takes, however, a while to understand the nature of each variety of grass and to see what it looks like during every season of the year. Yes, they have their down times, but this little hiccup is easily overshadowed by their many fine qualities. Most grasses, once established in a site they enjoy, are virtually carefree: a

little watering in summer, a little protection in winter and an annual pruning. They all have fresh new growth in late spring, attractive flowers in autumn and an interesting look even in winter. Late summer breezes cause their leaves and stems to sway, adding not only life and movement to your garden but also the sound of rustling foliage – it’s like listening to nature’s music! Many grasses, such

Grasses have so much to offer - they’re plants for all seasons. We just have to learn how to use them properly. My three favourite grass families are the miscanthus, pennisetums and carex. ‘in’ today. Miscanthus sinensis ‘Variegatus’ (zone 6) is still good, but the new large leafed striped ‘Cabaret’ is truly stunning. They usually only bloom during long, hot summers and falls but in dark green perennial borders or in lawn areas with a great many trees around, they are the spark that can ignite a garden. There are so many other great miscanthus varieties, like M. ‘Ghana’ with its rich dark leaves; M. ‘Morning Light’ with its wispy fine foliage; and some varieties that plume out as early as the beginning of July right up to late September and go on to make a splendid display all winter. I encourage everyone to take a good look at all the varieties as they start to bloom in gardens and garden centers. The most beautiful grass of all, bar none, is Purple Fountain Grass (Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’ – zone 8). Alas, to survive our winters this variety Continued: GARDEN/ p27

that make great focal points in mid-sized or large gardens. Their fall flowers not only add a spark to autumn gardens, but they also continue through the winter until heavy snows or winds take their toll. Tall varieties, like Miscanthus ‘Giganteus’, or as sometimes called ‘Robustus’ (zone 6), grow eight to ten feet tall with long green leaves touched with a bit of silver. They make a great screen by mid-June, and their bronze flower tufts are truly magnificent. The most sought after miscanthus, however, is ‘Porcupine Grass’ (M. strictus – zone 5). This six to seven foot tall grass has gold bands along its leaves and a tall upright habit, making it especially elegant. There are many compact forms of this grass, like M. ‘Yaku Jima’, making them far more adaptable to containers and small space gardens. ‘Gold Bar’ is a new and even more brilliantly striped variety in huge demand. Variegated grasses are also very

Add a new dimension to your garden GARDEN from page 26 must be brought inside a greenhouse, but it is the focal point of all focal points. Surrounded by anything pink, it is magnificence plus. There are many new tender varieties of pennisetum not to be overlooked, like the white and green ‘Skyrocket’, the soft pink ‘Sparkler’ and the vibrant bright pink ‘Cherry Sparkler’. Among the hardy varieties, I like the new ‘Burgundy Bunny’ because it has the darkest foliage of any hardy pennisetum. Blending various pennisetums together can create some wonderful effects. For example, Pennisetum alopecuroides (zone 5) with its creamy white plumes, interplanted with Fountain Grass (P. setaceum – zone 5) makes a dreamy combination. Surround these plants with

pink flowering ‘Autumn Joy’ sedums, and you’ll have quite a display. Each fall and winter, we’ve been using more and more carex along with evergreen perennials to create some pretty amazing effects. My all time favourite is Carex morrowii ‘Evergold’. There are so

many new varieties of carex coming out the past few years, it’s really hard to keep up. I also love the new C. m. ‘Everest’ because of its brilliant white and green foliage and C. ‘Everillo’ with its hot lime foliage. They will tolerate most winters in a container. In the ground, they are like beacons of light all winter long, especially on those really dark, dreary days. Folks, if you’re new to grasses, proceed slowly. Try a few this fall and see how they can heighten the effect of your late summer, fall and winter garden. I like to plant them fairly close together for an instant effect and to choke out weeds. The basic rule, however, is to plant them as far apart as their height. The grasses I have mentioned are not invasive, and they will all add a whole new dimension to your late summer and fall garden.

Progress Eric

Welsh 604.702.5572 • sports@theprogress.com

Student of the game gets CIS notice Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Ask most football players what their best assets are and they’ll boldly throw out words like fast, strong, hard working and intense. Rarely will ‘smart’ be the first adjective out of any of their mouths. Which makes GW Graham’s Treyvon Walsh an oddity. He does work hard. He is tall. He is fast, and has hands of glue. But it is his brain that he lists as his best football trait. “I might not be the biggest or the strongest or the fastest, but I feel like I’m the smartest guy on the field all of the time,” he said with no shortage of confidence. “I’m going to use my mental game and my brain to destroy you.” Walsh, a second year player on the varsity squad, comes by his football smarts naturally. He is the son of a former Canadian Football League player, growing up with access to a man who played the game at one of the highest levels possible. V ictor Br yan, a Simon Fraser University alumnus, played parts of three seasons (1997-99) with the BC Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was a defensive back. On the 1999 Blue Bombers, Bryan spent many practices trying to cover two of the CFL’s all-time receiv-

ing greats, Milt Stegall and a young Geroy Simon. “He gives me tips and advice and really helps me out,” Walsh said. “It’s really great to have a role model like that in my life.” Bryan’s career came to a sudden end due to an ACL tear, inoperable at the time. Walsh was born in 1997 and

has never seen tape of his dad’s CFL games, only some grainy footage from his Clansmen days. But because of his dad’s influence, the teenager watches football with a coach’s mind-set. He’s not viewing National Football League games on a Sunday after noon

like your average fan. He’s dissecting formations and techniques, absorbing info. “You can be a super athletic guy, but if you don’t know what you’re doing out there, you’ll get beat every time,” he said. Walsh spent part of his summer hanging out with CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport)

Some choices are hard.

squads, attending camps at SFU and the University of British Columbia. “I went to Simon Fraser first and they were really pleased with what I did,” said Walsh, whose mother is also an SFU grad. “They told me all these new coverages and zones. I soaked it all in and performed really

well.” The Thunderbirds were next. “It was a one-day camp and kind of the same thing as SFU where they really made me feel like I was at home,” he said. A three day Team BC camp helped him get noticed by these schools. “That was a good

experience, football all day long and it kind of felt like I was in the pros,” he said. “It was the first time I had eyeballs on me and I was nervous because I knew I had to do well. But I calmed myself down and did what I do best.” Walsh plays both wide receiver and cornerback for the GWG Grizzlies, excelling at both. On of fence, he’s part of a deep receiving corps that includes Kirkland Kennedy, Ryan Connolly and Emerson Smith. They’ll be catching passes from Terrell Spar vier, famously dubbed ‘The Blue Smurf’ in 2012 by your friendly neighborhood sports writer. “He’s a short guy, but he has a big arm,” Walsh said. “You look at him and don’t expect him to make some of the throws he can make. But he’s got the arm, he knows the game and he’s a leader. “It’s kind of like pickyour-poison with our offence,” he continued. “We’re a passing-first team that’s going to be go-go-go, and other teams are just going to have to try to keep up with us.” Team success will lead to individual success for Walsh, who can only benefit if the Grizzlies fulfill their potential. “We think we’re one of the best teams in BC, for sure,” he said. “We’ve got talent and depth, hustle and heart. I believe we’ll be in the playoffs, and once you’re there, the best teams win out.”

Some are easy.

Chilliwack’s Jason Staiger in pursuit during a weekend game against University of Calgary.

Staiger strikes twice in TRU comeback Chilliwack’s Jason Staiger scored twice as the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack battled to a 3-3 tie against the Edmonton Scottish Senior men’s team – the first real game action of the 2014 season. The game was part of a three-game exhibition swing through Edmonton. The team came from behind to secure the time. “We were down 3-1 in the first half and came back,” said WolfPack head coach John Antulov. “They were a very good, skill-

ful and organized team. It was a very tough game for us but we battled back.” Thompson Rivers got two goals from secondyear player Staiger. The other marker was scored by Jacob Kaay (fifth year, Kamloops). “We showed good character,’ Antulov added. Things didn’t go

quite as wall in the Calgary leg of the tour. A bit of nerves and misreading of the opposition tactics were the main stumbling blocks as the WolfPack lost 4-0 to the University of Calgary Dinos Aug. 23. TRU will head to Prince George for exhibition matches this weekend (Aug 30-31) against UNBC before
