Civil suit hits MLA Victoria-Swan Lake MLA Rob Fleming is facing a defamation lawsuit from a B.C. deputy minister after the NDP published statements that suggested the civil servant’s position and pay increase was politically motivated. In the suit filed Aug. 15 at Vancouver civil courts, jobs, tourism and skills deputy minister Athana Mentzelopoulos claims Fleming damaged her reputation by naming her in an online petition related to the ongoing teacher’s strike. That petition, still available this week on the B.C. NDP’s website, features an image with a mock credit card labelled “Christy Clark’s Friend Rewards Program,” with the name “Liberal Insider” attached. Below, Mentzelopoulos is directly named as benefitting from a $30,000 pay increase in 2013 and called Clark’s friend. The defamation claim also references an email sent to NDP supporters. Mentzelopoulos was a bridesmaid at Clark’s wedding in the mid-1990s, something Mentzelopoulos’ lawyer said is irrelevant in her professional life. “Athana’s been a career civil servant,” said lawyer David Wotherspoon.

Upgrade work closes Cook Street
Program finds parttime work for clients with developmental disabilities
IN BRIEF
Drivers will want to avoid Cook Street between Maplewood Drive and Quadra Street for the next six months as sidewalks and underground piping are installed. The street will be open to local traffic only until spring 2015 while sewer, drain and water pipes are replaced and 870 metres of new curbs, sidewalks, gutters, painted bike lanes and landscaping are installed. Drivers are advised to take Finlayson Street or Cedar Hill Road to avoid delays during construction. Brunnell Construction Ltd. was awarded the $4.8-million municipal contract last month.
RON Talks are back
Royal Oak’s curious minds gather once again at Crumsby’s Cafe (4525 W. Saanich Rd.) on Sept. 2 for another instalment of RON Talks. Speakers include Victoria Police Const. Mike Russell, First Nations Leader James Taylor and Crumsby’s owner Keith Elwood. The free event begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. RON talks are planned for the first Tuesday of every month. See Twitter @ron_talks or email rontalks@shaw.ca for more information.

Everybody wants a purpose, and finding that fit is what drives Jeanine Reemst. At any given time, Reemst and a five-person staff manage about 80 clients with developmental disabilities through a four-stage process to permanent employment at the Garth Homer Society. “We have clients who can perform some areas of a job, and do those parts really well, but maybe not all the tasks of a regular job description,” says Reemst, employment services manager at the society.
“We have to find an employer willing to adjust a job description or expectations to find a fit.” - Jeanine Reemst, Garth Homer Society Reemst recently invited the community to visit the organization’s newly established space on the third floor of the Garth Homer building (813 Darwin Ave.) in Saanich. “The long term plan is to educate employers about our opportunities,” she says. Job coaches work with clients who face barriers due to any one of a long list of developmental disabilities such as autism, Asperger syndrome, Down syndrome or fetal alcohol syndrome. Clients are assessed for their autonomy and other factors before coaches assist in job development. “We have to sleuth out how independent they are, find out what they like and why they like it, and then move ahead to find an employer willing to adjust a job description or expectations to find a fit,” Reemst says. One client, December, has found her niche as a re-packer for the Six Mile Liquor Store.

Kate Jones, left, is in the process of securing her first photography contract with a local agency, a placement she secured with help from Jeanine Reemst, right, manager of the employee services department at the Garth Homer Society in Saanich. December comes in once or twice a week to process deliveries and run a machine that quickly separates flats of beer and cider into six packs. “They consolidated a set of tasks into one day for December, which saves time for the store clerks, who previously did it on demand throughout the week,” Reemst says. Since May, the department has helped place 12 people in permanent jobs.

Once a job is found, clients begin working during the training and support stage, which can last from a couple of weeks to several months. The training goes beyond the client, as coaches often educate the employer and other employees about the work arrangement. Coaches visit the client as little as once a week during the maintenance stage and back off once the employee is thriving in their new role. “They don’t want us there any-

more, checking in on them week to week,” Reemst says. Jobs are almost always part time and can range from a few hours each week to a few hours every day. Though most clients collect the federal Person With Disability benefit, they can still earn up to $800 each month without affecting it. Gallant finished fifth at the Laser Canadian Championships in July, and started the month with a bang as he sailed to eighth among the open field at the US Laser Nationals in San Francisco, July 31 to Aug. 3. “San Francisco was really fun, the wind was 15 to 18 knots, gusting to 20 or 25,” he said. The first day of the U19 championships in Kingston was light with flukey conditions, but Gallant managed to end the day’s races fourth overall in scoring. On Day 2, it was howling with gale winds up to 30 knots. That day, Gallant was first after spending most of the day straining his quads to “hike” completely out of the boat and provide a counterweight to the sail to go as fast as possible. “Unfortunately I was also blackflagged for false starting on Day 2 and finished dead last in one of the fleets,” he said. “But then I won another race after that and started Day 3 in first place.” He sowed up the championship
with a first place finish and two second place finishes on Day 4 in shifty but decent wind. Winning the U19 Laser nationals is great for trophy purposes, but it’s not the qualifier Gallant will need. Over the next three years he will campaign for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. In addition to starting his bachelor of science this fall at the University of Victoria, Gallant will be back on the water two to three times a week and in the gym everyday in addition to road biking for leg strength. The Royal Victoria Yacht Club race team had a few members at the Laser youth nationals where 18-yearold Nick Smith reached fourth in Laser Standard, and 15-year-old John Owen was 15th out of 115 in the Laser Radial. The youth are coached by Eric Vanderpol and Steven McBride. Traveling for sailing competitions is costly, and Gallant runs his own fundraising campaign at gofundme. com/maxgallantlasersailing. reporter@saanichnews.com

Fleming intends to fight defamation allegation Continued from Page A1
“She [Mentzelopoulos] has worked for federal government, she was recruited by the Campbell government,” Wotherspoon said. “The fact she was someone’s bridesmaid 20 years ago shouldn’t be used for political fodder.” Mentzelopoulos requested a retraction and formal apology, but that didn’t happen, he added.
“She felt she had to take this step,” Wotherspoon said. Fleming and his lawyers have three weeks to formally respond before the suit moves forward in court. An NDP spokesperson said Fleming intends to defend himself vigorously, but was unable to offer further comment as the case is before the courts. editor@saanichnews.com

Old tires are being tread upon as recycled floor mats in the gold rink at Pearkes arena. Skaters will notice the upgraded mat flooring in the dressing rooms and along halls and walkways to the ice. The rubber is used to cushion the sharp skate blades. The $85,000 upgrade was offset by a $30,000 grant to Saanich from the Tire Stewardship B.C. program and TSBC Community Grant Program. The program kept 1.3 million pounds of tires out of landfills in 2013.

OUR VIEW
Live your life and pass it on Organ donation isn’t for everyone. Depending on religious beliefs or personal preference, some people choose not to donate their organs after death. But for those of us who don’t have any stipulations about organ donation, the question remains – why don’t more of us register to become donors? According to B.C. Transplant, there is a critical shortage of organs available for transplant not only in B.C., but all over the world. In 2013, B.C. had the highest living donor rate in the country of 28 per million and 14,5 per cent million in deceased donor rate – equalling the national average. There were 346 transplants and the number of organ donors (130 living and 67 deceased) increased as well. But the numbers are still very low compared to the number of people that die in the province each year. Volunteers with B.C. Transplant say some people still aren’t aware they even have to register to become a donor. Fifteen years ago, the method of becoming a donor included simply putting a dot on a driver’s licence. Now, that method is no longer valid and people wishing to become donors must register directly with B.C. Transplant. After death, each person has the ability to help up to 75 different people and save or extend the lives of many as seven people by becoming an organ donor. Currently there are 473 people in B.C. waiting for vital organs,, approximately 10 of which live somewhere in Greater Victoria. As of June, only 38 per cent of people living in Greater Victoria had registered as donors. The numbers speak for themselves.. More of us need to step up and take a few minutes it requires to register as an organ donor at transplant.bc.ca. You could end up saving a life right in your own backyard. What do you think? A reader who attended the Kelowna session said even winery operators aren’t thrilled about the proposal to enlarge retail space and allow sales of wine or beer not made on site. He said “not one” participant there liked the idea of increasing industrial activity such as food processing or retailing. And he agreed with Popham that the ALC is doing a good job with subdivision applications. Popham also clarified the situation with the leased craft gin distillery on her own Vancouver Island farm. It started as a winery, and the conversion needed only local government approval because the production facility was already considered and taxed as light industrial. Victoria Gin has been a model for the government’s push to allow distilleries, breweries or meaderies on farmland. Given the B.C. Liberals’ love of liberalized liquor, I expect that change to go through. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

Freedom by car no longer a necessity for wired teens There is a strong trend documented among young people (Millennial generation) away from automobiles. They do not have the funds or passions for wasting fuel and energy just to sit in traffic. Today, Facebook, Twitter and text messaging allow teenagers and 20-somethings to connect without wheels. That is a major shift from the days when the car stood at the centre of youth culture and wheels served as the ultimate gateway to freedom and independence. In fact, many within the Millennial generation see car ownership as not only expensive, but unnecessary and inefficient. They realize that the time they are driving leaves them unconnected, even with handheld devices. There is data to support these observations. In 2008, 46.3
per cent of potential drivers 19 years old and younger had drivers licences, compared with 64.4 per cent in 1998, according to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration, and drivers aged 21 to 30 drove 12 percent fewer miles in 2009 than they did in 1995. Similar statistics can be found across Canada as well, and even in the bastion of the oil-centric cities of Alberta. In fact, there are confluence of enforcement initiatives that have recently been introduced that have expedited this move to more efficient transportation systems: · A graduated licensing system; · Greater enforcement with regard to distracted driving and drinking and driving; · Speed monitoring · Higher insurance premiums. Last week, it was reported
9 9¢
that researchers from the University of British Columbia contend that harsher penalties for impaired driving and speeding have led to fewer crashes. Since then, they say car crashes have declined 21 per cent, crash-related hospital admissions have dropped 8 per cent and crash-related ambulance calls have fallen by 7.2 per cent. These positive results are also correlated with the fact that the 15 to 24 age group, which is over-represented in collisions and risky driving behaviour, is actually driving less. Kudos to the law enforcement for saving lives and encouraging alternate modes of transportation and communications. Avi Ickovich Langford
Advert claim lacks research The “W. Gifford-Jones MD” advertisement, “Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder” (News, Aug. 22, Page A5) concludes, “I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine. I turned 90 this year.” This kind of claim is called a testimonial. The advertised mixture is one of a line of products. W. Gifford-Jones, MD, is the pen name of Dr. Ken Walker. I was unable to find Ken Walker on the Find a Physician page of
the B.C. College of Physicians and Surgeons website. The B.C. Guideline about the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease does not mention vitamin C or lysine. The U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information guideline on post myocardial secondary prevention (meaning “preventing a second heart attack”) recommends offering several drugs to people who have survived a heart attack. Neither Vitamin C nor lysine

More bus hours this fall After extensive public input, B.C. Transit is adding another 5,000 hours of bus service in the Capital Region. Effective Sept. 2, late night service on Friday and Saturday nights currently available on routes 4, 6 and 14 will be extended to routes 15X Dockyard/UVic, 27 Gordon Head, 28 Majestic and 50 Langford/Downtown. Service hours are also being expanded on Route 4 Hillside/ UVic, Route 8 Interurban/Oak Bay and Route 39 UVic/Royal
Roads to better serve customers who are travelling to the region’s post-secondary institutions. The current Route 6 Royal Oak/Esquimalt is also being restructured. Esquimalt residents will now be better served by the Route 15X Dockyard/UVic with direct access to UVic, Camosun College Lansdowne campus and the Royal Jubilee Hospital. The new Route 6 Downtown/ Royal Oak will travel from the downtown core to the Royal Oak exchange along Quadra Street. “We listened to the more
than six thousand customers who participated in public consultations asking for more late night runs and added trips to the Camosun College Interurban campus,” said Susan Brice, Victoria Regional Transit Commission chair. “Ridership is on the rise in the Victoria region and we hope these investments continue to encourage people to make transit their transportation choice.” For a full schedule, see bctransit.com/vic. editor@saanichnews.com

Crashes happen often in pro cycling, but not the kind Nic Hamilton experienced. The 27-year-old Gordon Head resident was on the Canadian track cycling team at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow when his name went national. It was July 23, the day of the Opening Ceremonies, and Hamilton had just clipped a marshal during a training session in the velodrome. Both went tumbling after the 60 km/h crash. “When you have a crash like that, it can go one of two ways,” Hamilton said from Calgary, where he was prepping for the upcoming Tour of Alberta, Sept. 2 to 9. “Either you have both people pointing fingers at each other, or both are saying sorry, and it was the latter. You can’t sit around and say whose fault it was. Both the volunteer and myself were trying to do our jobs.” It was with that mindset Hamilton moved to recover emotionally and physically from the crash. He was concussed, and a series of injuries to the small back muscles kept him in bed for the better part of three days. The marshal, a Glaswegian woman, also suffered a concussion and broken collarbone. Hamilton missed the track cycling portion of the event but was able to get back on his bike for the road race on Aug. 3, the final day of the Games. The crash was part of a roller coaster that ended with three stages of recovery. “I’m a very positive person, so for me my natural reaction is to be optimistic. I can count on my fingers the number of times I’ve
Saanich’s Nic Hamilton. ever been mad. On the first day, I was okay. But the next day, I was frustrated thinking, ‘Six months of prep was thrown away.’ By the third day I knew I needed to move forward. And in the end, I was able to come away having competed in the road race.” Hamilton also credits his speedy recovery to the Canadian medical staff who were on site and immediately took him in. He attended the Games clinic for three sessions a day with a physiotherapist, massage therapist and medical doctor, who

followed the rigid concussion protocol. Hamilton didn’t finish the road race, but was in good company as only 11 of the 140 starters completed, most of them among the world’s elite like winner Geraint Thomas. Hamilton will finish the season with his Jelly Belly pro cycling teammates at the Tour of Alberta and will then fly to Japan for the three-day Tour de Hokkaido. “The Games didn’t derail anything,” he said. “It was just a temporary setback.” reporter@saanichnews.com

a.k.a. “Lazy Eye” The word “amblyopia” is Greek in origin and it quite literally means slow vision. The term “lazy eye” is often used to describe amblyopia to patients. Community Spotlight: SENIORS
Classroom still best for brain Travis Paterson News staff
The old phrase, “use it or lose it,” still holds true, but it’s not quite that simple when it comes to brain activity. A locally run class is helping those who might have passed up challenging their brains to get it back together. New research is showing that, just as the body can always build muscle fibre (though at a slower rate later in life), it’s also possible to build new neural pathways much later in life than previously believed. In fact, it’s believed it’s never too late, though it’s all relative to the state of someone’s mental and physical health. The key is to challenge the mind on a consistent basis, which is the genesis of the Memory Plus classes run throughout Greater Victoria by Silver Threads, said program co-ordinator Lisa Coulson. “In our lifetime, the childhood class setting is often the healthiest time, when you’re being forced to use your mind,” Coulson said. “And that’s what Memory Plus is all about. We create a social group that performs games and activities which are all designed to challenge the brain, and it all relates back to memory. “The program is designed for people in the beginning stages of memory difficulties, so some participants are in early diagnosis dementia or
Alzheimer’s, and do well to retain their abilities,” Coulson added. “Others are just being proactive,” she said. “It’s for anyone at any age.” Class engagement creates a social atmosphere, which is an important part of the process, especially for those not well connected to their community. Coulson has had several participants tell her they look forward to the class all week. Theme-based curriculum, such as camping in the summer time, stokes forgotten memories and reinvigorates neural pathways, she said. “It ends up being a lot of fun, there is a lot of laughter, and I have to say, laughter is probably the most important ingredient to the class,” Coulson said. “There are a lot of prepared jokes, which leads to impromptu laughs throughout the day.” Memory Plus classes have run locally for seven years and the program is continuing to grow. Sessions run Tuesdays at St. George’s Anglican Church (3909 St. George’s Ln.) in Cadboro Bay; Mondays at the relocated Victoria Silver Threads building (2340 Richmond Rd.); Thursdays at St. Luke’s Church Hall (3821 Cedar Hill X Rd.) and on Friday’s at Saanich Silver Threads (286 Hampton Rd.). But don’t just rely on a once-a-week classroom setting, said Coulson, who promotes as much activity as possible for seniors. “Never slow down,” she said. “The best thing for the brain is to be a lifelong learner.” For more information or class times, call Saanich Silver Threads at 250-382-3151.

Ask the Expert Seniors’ Edition Q: I am concerned about my care needs as I age. If I move
from my house to a Retirement Community, will there be 24/7 medical assistance should I fall or require assistance?
A: • There are many different services and amenities offered
by each of the Retirement Communities in the Greater Victoria area.
• Consider touring the communities which appear to have the lifestyle choices and affordability to suit your needs. Take along a friend or family member as an extra set of eyes and ears. • Some residences offer 24/7 emergency response only. In this case, you would be assessed and staff would call family or 911. Some residences offer 24/7 medical and nursing staff assistance to their residents . • Consider ‘kicking the tires’ by booking a trial stay, guest stay or respite stay depending on the type of residential living you require. This will give you the opportunity to see the day to day reality of living in a community. Be sure to ask questions about safety procedures. It will also give you and the staff a chance to assess your needs and match them to the most suitable community. Linda Lord is your local Vancouver Island senior living expert. Patricia Whitely has made a life out of helping out. The Victoria resident continues to volunteer each month at Our Place and once a week at Mount St. Mary Hospital. Among other duties at Mount St. Mary, Whitely arranges for a local daycare to come and sing, connecting the age groups. “I think it’s important for the new generations to connect with the older generations as soon as possible,” she says. Whitely was born and raised in Vancouver where she spent time with Canadian Girls in Training organization, a place that shaped her life and beliefs. She went on to study education and earned her doctorate, specializing in early childhood education. It took her all over
the world, as she worked and volunteered in China, the Caribbean, Africa, Guatemela, Egypt and Cambodia. “I ended up in a lot of different situations, working for the Army, at one point, and for the Organization for Cooperation and Overseas Development, though that’s no longer around.” Whitely usually worked with schools to either develop or deliver English curriculum. In Egypt, she partnered with mennonites in 20 schools and created an English language phonics program. In addition to that, Whitely stepped forward to volunteer. In Egypt, it took her to a strange sounding, but very real adventure called Garbage City, a Christian group that collected garbage in Cairo and sorted out the recyclable materials. Words of wisdom: Early on in Whitely’s

life she joined the Canadian Girls in Training organization in Vancouver, and credits life lessons she learned there. “They encouraged us to be helpful and of service in life, and I became a leader in that group, provincial president. It’s a spiritual belief of mine, to do something helpful if
you can. “I always believed it’s important in life to go outside your socio-economic group and expose yourself to other socio-economic groups. For me, I did it by volunteering when I worked overseas.” reporter@saanichnews.com

Community Spotlight: SENIORS
Co-housing a fresh concept for seniors Seniors co-housing … now this makes sense. I’m sure when any senior shuffles by a milestone – Year 70 in my case recently – there is a temptation to fall back on an ageless truism: “If I’d known I was going to live so long I would have ….” In my case, as with many of my veteran colleagues from the jourBrian nalism trenches, that sentence ends with … “joined my newspaper’s pension plan.” I didn’t. But, my partner and I got lucky. We own our modest retirement home outright and that makes the coming years less daunting. And, we have each other. Many are not so fortunate. For many fixed income seniors the implications of housing costs and other daily living expenses are scary. For some these financial challenges are exacerbated by the terrible loneliness that can accom-
pany the less-than-golden years. In Sooke, a beacon shines – a seniors’ cohousing project that addresses the dual threats of being able to stay in your own home and the isolation that can accompany old age. Sooke’s Margaret Critchlow says: “There is a lot of concern about the impact of the silver tsunami from Kieran those of us who are growing older.” Margaret is president of the Canadian Senior Cohousing Society and a founding director of Harbourside, a soon-to-be-constructed seniors’ cohousing complex on the waterfront in Sooke. Across North America, seniors in cohousing projects design and manage their own neighbourhoods. They create physical and social environments in which they flourish until the lights go out. Seniors own their homes the same way others own their condo units. The bonus is they share a large

Margaret loves the added benefits of this seniors living model. “Social isolation is more likely to kill you than smoking. Social connection is the key to flourishing in old age,” she says. I’m so happy I decided to Shannon Oaks my “Fear arises easilymake when I look home. Everyone here has
at the options available to our parents and realize that I don’t want those options and, worse, I couldn’t afford them. Baby Boomers had fewer children than previous generations so our potential to be a burden is spread among fewer offspring. And, for those without children, where do we
turn for family-like support as we age? “But I think this fear should be a wake-up call, not a way of life. How about turning fear into a positive energy, a sense of possibility unlike anything the world has seen since the 60s?” Harbourside’s founders believe they can “foster cooperation, social connection and affordability through design and through the sharing of elder care as well as physical and social resources.” By May 31st this year, 28 equity members were in place at Harbourside and there were still three openings. The common house is in place and construction of 31 dwellings begins this September with occupancy scheduled for January 2016. There are consequences to all of life’s critical decisions and Margaret has zeroed in on one that makes cohousing a compelling option to explore. Senior cohousing allows people to stay eight to 10 years longer in their own homes than convention living arrangements.

Saanich news ... through the decades Editor’s note: The News is taking a regular look through our archives to remind readers what was making history 10, 20 and 25 years ago. To share memories of any of these moments with readers, email editor@ saanichnews.com with “Through the decades” in the subject line and your phone number for verification.
10 years ago … Former University of Victoria geography professor Harold Foster creates a lot of controversy when he begins promoting his new book, What Really Causes AIDS, and claims nutritional supplements alone can reverse the effects of the virus. Upon return from an AIDS conference in Zambia, Foster receives harsh rebuke from physician Keith Martin, then the MP for Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca. “His views are, quite frankly, nonsense,” Martin said. Martin has since moved on to work in global health and foreign policy in Washington, D.C. Foster retains a website promoting nutritional-based health solutions.
20 years ago … The Commonwealth Games wraps up, and Angela Chalmers, then 30, captures local hearts by winning Victoria’s only gold medal finish with her eight-minute, 32-second finish in the 3,000 metres track event. 25 years ago … Gordon Head News contributor David Ryland gives Spike Lee’s latest flick, Do the Right Thing, five stars for its captivating exploration of racial tensions on a scorching day at a Brooklyn pizza shop. “It’s not just black against white. It’s a far more complex examination of the conflicts between many races, the sexes, classes and generations, that make up Lee’s picture of this small intense world,” he wrote.
