Sturgeon numbers swimming shallow RebeccaWatson Omineca Express Over three quarters of the fish at the Nechako White Sturgeon Conservation Centre have died over the past month. The new sturgeon recovery facility in Vanderhoof found difficulty dealing with the recent heat wave and water-temperature fluctuation, which created high levels of stress in the fish, said Cory Williamson, facility manager and chair of the Nechako White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative. “It’s a complicated piping system and understanding how it operates was challenging. The river temperatures have been high and a bacterial outbreak happened at the same time,” said Mr. Williamson. “But the biggest factor here is learning how to use the technology. It’s all new to us, learning to grow fish in these tanks.” The goal for the Fresh Water and Fisheries Society project was to release 12,000 sturgeon back into the Nechako river this spring. The hatchery started with 100,000 eggs, expecting to loose over half by their first feeding; it is normal to have a high loss during this stage because the juvenile (young) fish are extremely picky eaters. It is also normal to loose a few more throughout the process but by mid July numbers were lower than anticipated (around ten
thousand) and have now dwindled to two thousand over the past month. “Unfortunately the other stressors occurred during the critical feeding stage that caused even more of a loss. If this happened two weeks later, or if the fish were two weeks older, we wouldn’t have had this problem,” said Mr.

Preschool program changes location

HAVING FUN: Kyler Payton 5, Haidyn Gerz 5, Dax Fasano 5, Claire Reyden 6, and Aleycia Reyden 4, have fun in the sun at Ferland Park. Rebecca Watson Omineca Express This fall the Nechako Valley Community Services Society (NVCSS) will once again run Sunshine Discoveries Preschool but in a new
location. Instead of being at St. Josephs School, the preschool for children aged 3 to 5 will take place at Prairiedale School located west of Vanderhoof off Loop Rd. The tuition-based program will run from September 15 through to June 20 offering a means of early education. The NVCSS is excited about the change and hopes people of Vanderhoof are too. “It’s a nice location, rural, quiet and lots of space,” said Tyrell Arnold, executive director of NVCSS. “The only downfall is it’s a little ways out of town but in a larger city like Prince George you would have to go that far anyway.” As an inclusive community organization, the NVCSS is dedicated to supporting and educating individuals and families through the enhancement of in-
dependence, confidence and wellbeing. For the past two years the society has run the Sunshine Discoveries Preschool program at St. Josephs School but was unfortunately unable to renew their lease since the preschool was the only one renting space. This year, the School District 91 has agreed to have the program take place at the empty Prairiedale School making use of a classroom and indoor gym. When Prairiedale closed, all the outdoor equipment was removed but when Rainbow Christian School closed they donated all the toys and equipment they were using to run the pre-school before NVCSS took over. Over the past couple years, the society has also accumulated over $5,000 in additional toys through Make Children First grant
funding made possible by Success By 6, an United Way program supporting early education. “That includes indoor and outdoor preschool playground equipment and toys designed to enhance learning,” said Mr. Arnold. This is the third year NVCSS has managed the preschool and plans to once again have all spots filled early. The program’s 40 seats are already halfway filled and registration works on a first-come-firstserve basis. There are four classes available each with ten spots, and are Monday and Wednesday morning/ afternoon and Tuesday and Thursday morning/ afternoon. Edith Stevenson, preschool teacher and manager of Sunshine Discoveries, feels the new location is great. “It’s a new space and
environment to get used to but there is definitely opportunity for growth,” said Ms. Stevenson. “It’s just an amazing program. Early intervention is so valuable, especially for kids with special needs.”

Progressive Employment Services An action plan for the labour market Just one of the many valuable services provided by Progressive Employment Services supports both job seekers and employers in a new and innovative way. Workers On Call is an enhanced service designed to help connect employers with workers for short-term assignments. Shelley Froese, Workers On Call coordinator, acts as a liaison between employers and clients saving employers time and money by giving them access to an existing database of workers. Clients submit their resume and sign a consent form allowing potential employers to view their information. When employers have a short-term employment need they simply submit a Worker Request Form giving details such as position,
duration, qualifications, pay, equipment required, etc. The coordinator then shares resumes that meet the required qualifications with the employer and provides any assistance needed to help make the match. Finding an appropriate candidate, the employer may proceed to make the hire. Once the short-term employment is finished, the coordinator follows up with the employer to gather feedback and continues to make periodic contact with the clients to ensure that they are still available for work and that their resumes are up to date. Call 250-567-5785 (toll free at 866-567-7375) or stop into our office at 139 First Street East, Vanderhoof for more information or to see how the Worker’s on Call program could help you!

The Takla-Rainbow property, which is located around 150 kilometres northwest of Fort St. James, covers some 4,545.34 hectares of land in the Twin Creek drainage area. The field work took place over the last two weeks of July and consisted of geological mapping and sampling within five of the six known mineral deposits in the Takla-Rainbow property. The five zones sampled were the five known copper-gold mineralization deposits in the area. The two week intensive work was aimed at identifying porphyry-style copper and gold mineral deposits that had not been previously identified by former operators Imperial Metals and Eastfield Resources. Results from the 226 samples taken are expected to return their results around the end of August to the beginning of September. The 2014 field work came about in the aftermath of a successful 2013 drilling program in the region that produced gold, copper and silver.

Labour Day in Canada is a holiday to campaign for workers’ rights. It celebrates the achievements of these rights. Labour Day in Canada is celebrated on the first Monday of September, and this year is September 1. It originally gave workers the chance to campaign for better working conditions or pay. The day is now part of a long weekend for many Canadians. What do people do? Traditionally, Labour Day was an occasion to campaign for and celebrate workers’ rights during parades and picnics organized by trade unions. These still play a role in Labour Day for some Canadians, but many people see the first Monday in September as an opportunity to take a late summer trip, perhaps to their country cottage, or enjoy the company of family or friends at picnics, fairs, festivals and fireworks displays. For teenagers and other students, the Labour Day weekend is the last chance to celebrate with a party or to go on a trip before school re-opens for the new academic year. Canadian football fans may spend a large proportion of the weekend watching the Labour Day Classic matches live or on television. The Labour Day Classic consists of three games between high ranking teams in the Canadian Football League. One match is played on the Sunday before Labour Day and two on Labour Day. Public life Post offices, many businesses, and many organizations are closed on Labour Day in Canada. Schools and other educational establishments are also closed, as Labour Day falls at the end of the summer holiday period. Many public transport services run to a reduced or “Sunday” service, although others may not run at all. There may be some local disruption to traffic
eventually led to the founding of the Canadian Labour Congress in 1883. around parades, particularly in Toronto, and some congestion on highways and at airports as people return from late summer vacations or trips. Background The origins of Labour Day can be traced back to April 15, 1872, when the Toronto Trades Assembly organized Canada’s first significant demonstration for worker’s rights. The aim of the demonstration was to release the 24 leaders of the Toronto Typographical Union who were imprisoned for striking to campaign for a nine-hour working day. At this time, trade unions were still illegal and striking was seen as a criminal conspiracy to disrupt trade. In spite of this, the Toronto Trades Assembly was already a significant organization and encouraged workers to form trade unions, mediated in disputes between employers and employees and signaled the mistreatment of workers. There was enormous public support for the parade and the authorities could no longer deny the important role that the trade unions had to play in the emerging Canadian society. A few months later, a similar parade was organized in Ottawa and passed the house of Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John Macdonald.

Labour Day was originally celebrated in the spring but it was moved to the fall after 1894. A similar holiday, Labor Day is held on the same day in the United States of America. Canadian trade unions are proud that this holiday was inspired by their efforts to improve workers’ rights. Many countries have a holiday to celebrate workers’ rights on or around May 1.

Ruts in road to farmland changes summer consultation as adequate. It’s based on 11 questions developed with staff, farm groups and local government. He’s also not counting how many emails were stacked up by proponents or critics. “I’m not conducting a plebiscite,” Letnick said. “What I’m trying to do is come up with the best balance of recommendations to make to government that can hold their own based on the idea and the potential positive and negative consequences.” NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham was more forthcoming. She was invited to the formal sessions, and also won’t talk about them directly. But she’s not backing away from her criticisms. The government is proposing to bypass the Agricultural Land Commission for several kinds of decisions, including subdivision for family use or into properties of 160 acres or more. “I think the general idea was that people trust the ALC to make that decision, and it should still go through the commission,” Popham said. “Actually the commission has been making those decisions anyway, and I think they’ve been quite fair when somebody applies.” She said farmers also aren’t sold on the notion of easing the rules for secondary businesses. “You will already find situations where there’s, let’s say a
Tom Fletcher Omineca Express The month-long Agricultural Land Commission consultation closed Aug. 22, and the B.C. government is compiling the feedback received from a province-wide tour and invitation to comment. I can’t tell you much about the official input. The consultation sessions were by invitation only, with no media allowed, and the submissions via website are also not public. I reached Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick as he was traveling around B.C. with his camper van, conducting his own meetings with farmers. He’s not saying much either, except that a summary of the findings should be made public in September as the government considers new regulations. The aim of this exercise is to consider relaxing rules around secondary farmland uses in the Interior, Kootenay and North regions, as well as food processing and retail sales of food and beverages on farmland. Also under consideration is allowing breweries and distilleries, as wine and cider production are now allowed, and relaxing rules to permit more off-farm products to be sold from farms. Letnick defended the 30-day
welding shop or something like that attached to somebody’s residence who lives on ALR land,” Popham said. “That sort of stuff has been allowed, but it’s always had to go through the ALC or some sort of process that’s been in place. This leaves that process out, and so I think that’s the problem people are having.” She noted that non-farm activities have a way of growing until they become the main business. A reader who attended the Kelowna session said even winery operators aren’t thrilled about the proposal to enlarge retail space and allow sales of wine or beer not made on site. He said “not one” participant there liked the idea of increasing industrial activity
such as food processing or retailing. And he agreed with Popham that the ALC is doing a good job with subdivision applications. Popham also clarified the situation with the leased craft gin distillery on her own Vancouver Island farm. It started as a winery, and the conversion needed only local government approval because the production facility was already considered and taxed as light industrial. Victoria Gin has been a model for the government’s push to allow distilleries, breweries or meaderies on farmland. Given the B.C. Liberals’ love of liberalized liquor, I expect that change to go through.

Omineca Express I’ve been to small-town fairs but this one takes the cake. The 4-H cake was delicious yes, but not that cake. The cake I’m talking about smells like decadent prosperity and tastes of fruitful hard work. Well, maybe it smells like manure and tastes like lemonade but either way it’s good. The Vanderhoof fair showed me just how strong and dedicated people are around here. At times I found myself watching something I had never seen before which made it even more worth while. Horse pulling, roping and costume classes. Raising and training cattle, dogs and swine. What a great time.

local community member who is highly involved with the Aquatic Centre, feels once the money starts coming in things will snowball because the project will benefit everyone. “I can see it helping every facet of the community from older people to younger people. The river is on the chilly side for some and in my experience as a realtor it’s an amenity that people coming to town look to have,” said Mr. Bulmer. The Vanderhoof Aquatic Centre recently started an online crowd funding campaign at investlocalbc.ca as a source of funding for the pool that currently sits at approximately $3000. The group
also set a date for a comedy night Sept. 26 called Standup For Charity at Elks Hall. Four comedians are set for stage performances with all proceeds going to the Vanderhoof Aquatic Centre. Since the referendum is only good for five years, Vanderhoof has threeand-a-half years left to raise the $8 million needed. So far, the money received from the district has gone toward purchasing a large banner that has been seen at various local events. To further orchestrate future sponsorships, members of the District of Vanderhoof plan to attend the Union of
BC Municipalities conference in Vancouver next month to start connections with business and the government. Vanderhoof’s mayor Gerry Thiessen plans to speak with Premier Christy Clark along with MLA Coralee Oakes, a former Quesnel councillor who helped to push the current construction of a community pool in Quesnel. “We have identified half a dozen businesses that we would like to meet there and we have started talking to companies to say hey, this is where we are at, this is what’s important to our community and we need you to be involved,” said Mayor Thiessen.
Flame retardants and your health Fire retardant material burns slower, and as such the hopes are to minimize damage if a fire broke out in the home, sounds great right? Except for the fact that those same materials give off an abundance of harmful chemicals the more you come in contact with them… and when your furniture contains them.. that’s a lot of contact making it very difficult to avoid. Let’s talk about what you can do . We’ve mentioned, using a HEPA filter to vacuum your home, keeping protective materials on furniture and if possible not purchasing or reupholstering any furniture if possible to reduce contimnant in the home. Aside from couches, and car seats, cushions and toys. You may not think to take a look at your carpets! When removing old carpets you may find that they have a padding, this padding is typically made from foam containing fire retardants. Take extra precautions, isolate the room you are working in from the rest of the home, and be sure to clean it well once the offending matter has been removed. Keep in mind the best way for a healthy lifestyle is to limit the amount of chemical, contaminants and bad apples in your home. Prevention works for food, it also works for purchases, do your homework, or find someone to do it for you.

HANDMADE JEWELLERY: Steve Cupello, 33, from Nelson, BC, has been creating his own jewellery for over a decade. MOM was his seventh festival this summer selling his unique art. Using extension chords and old metal materials, he combines special stones and crystals to make necklaces, bracelets and charms. “When the wire has had energy move through it, it changes potency and the copper molecules change which amplifies the properties of the crystal. It’s like magnetizing a rock, but adding energy to the stone” said Mr. Cupello.

Healthy initiatives grant giveaway Rebecca Watson Omineca Express The District of Vanderhoof has given non-profit organizations a chance at receiving a grant of up to $3,000. Through help of the Vanderhoof Healthier Community Alliance, the District received a grant for $15,000 from Northern Health to distribute to nonprofit organizations at a maximum of $3,000 per group. The grant is intended to help with local health related initiatives showing support in some way to a healthier community, said Erin Siemens, Vanderhoof economic development co-ordinator and member of the Vanderhoof Healthier Community Alliance. “In expressing interest the organization must show a targeted area, whether it’s in mental health, physical health or overall health,” said Ms. Siemens. The Vanderhoof Healthier Community Alliance was made eligible for this extended donation from Northern Health because of the initial Partnering for Healthier Communities grant of $20,000 that is currently being used for the Vanderhoof community garden. It will be the first time Northern Health offers this type of additional funding, allowing the members of the Vanderhoof Healthier Community Alliance to chose where the money will go. The alliance consists of April Hughes from Northern Health, Erin Siemens from the District of Vanderhoof and city councillor Ken Young. “They thought we would better know where our community needs work. It would also be a much bigger process for smaller groups to apply directly to Northern Health so they gave us the money to distribute it,” said Ms. Siemens. The deadline for submitting an Expression of Interest was August 1 and the
projects will be soon be evaluated on seven key criteria. The impact the project will have on the community, how big will the outreach be on the types of people effected, number of relationships created through the
project to help connect people, how the project encourages different people or groups to collaborate and work together, the overall effect the project will have in reducing illness and injuries through creating aware-
ness, the projects inclusiveness of including people of all race, religion, ethnicity, income, and sexual orientation, and the sustainability of the projects long-term benefits. The initial selection process for
those who submitted will be the first of two stages. Projects chosen in the upcoming weeks will move on to a second selection stage for a more indepth look at how each initiative will impact the community.

Vanderhoof Cadets chosen for aerial course Rebecca Watson Omineca Express Across Canada, over 25,000 air cadets compete each year for spaces within 24 different summer training courses. This year two Vanderhoof brothers, Colter 17, and Jacob 16, Hascarl were picked from the Vanderhoof squadron based on participation, academics and community evolvement. There are 6,700 cadets in the Pacific Region and although the organization tries to accommodate as many cadets as they can, the process is still a competitive one. Each course is not only free but pays the cadet a small daily amount to attend the course over 10 days. In his second year of Cadets, Jacob was chosen to do a basic aviation course for those interested in becoming a pilot and learning about job opportunities. His older brother Colter is now in his fourth year of cadets and was chosen to take an advanced aviation course. With that he learned about meteorology (weather in the sky) and how to read a METAR, the aviation weather code that shows the weather above

Both boys were also able to experience a flight in either a glider or power plane. “I like flying and learning all the different parts of the aircraft,” said Jacob. “I like the opportunity to go to the camps because you always get to meet new people,” said Colter.
