This week the Trail Regional SPCA is featuring a very special pooch. Her name Rossland News is Tiger and she is a 5 month old German shepherd cross. Tiger is a well mannered dog that gets along with other dogs, loves to play with toys and roll around in the dirt with her shelter buddies. She will need a stable home to gain confidence and would benefit from obedience classes. Tiger is smart, and willing to learn, however, wasn’t taught anything in her previous home. She would probably benefit from another dog in the house to make her feel comfortable when you have to leave the house. A HUGE thank-you to all the sponsors and participants in this year’s PAWS FOR A CAUSE. The event was such a huge success and wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our community. The Trail SPCA hopes that you and your furry friends had as much fun as we did! See you next year!

Music can lift the spirits and touch the hearts of even the most distant of souls. With elegance and compassion, that’s how the Concerts in Care program has embraced the regions’ aging for the last six years. Local professional musicians and a few out-of-towners, touch the lives of seniors by presenting weekly musical performances in 10 long-term care facilities throughout the West Kootenay region. The music program launched locally in 2009 as a pilot project of the Health Arts Society, with a mission to bring high quality live performances to people living in a health care setting. “They can’t get out to concerts so we’re bringing the concert to them,” said Nicola Everton, organizer of the concert series. “We’ve received re-
ally positive feedback from staff who say the residents really look forward to it and that they respond really well. Especially patients diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer disease, she added. “They become calmer and happier.” Everton is a career musician and music teacher, a 20-year clarinetist with the Vancouver Symphony, and now a member of the West Kootenay string quartet, La Cafamore. After relocating to the Kootenay area a few years ago, she was approached by an acquaintance of the Health Arts Society and asked to take on the administrative tasks of Concerts in Care, along with the fundraising duties, including grant applications, that are crucial in keeping the project alive and its musicians on the road. “I was new to the area and in the Kootenays you have to

be versatile, so I said ‘Sure I’ll take that on,” she recalled. Since that time, mostly local musicians and a handful of visiting performers of the classical, jazz and folk genres have had toes tapping and hands clapping during five-day tours that amass to 100 shows within 10 months, in facilities from Kaslo and New Denver to Nelson, Castlegar and Trail and Creston. A primary mandate for the concert series, besides enhancing life with the power of music, is to support the livelihood of its performers with union level pay for each 45-minute performance. “It’s key for this region to keep professional musicians working,” said Everton. “We do pay the musicians a professional wage and because of that we keep the groups small, from between one to four people.” The BC Health Arts Society is described as being dedicated to presenting professional music concerts for audiences in health
care settings, primarily long term care facilities. They’re able to do so through financial support from individuals, foundations, and agencies, and recently Concerts in Care received an $8,000 grant from the Columbia Basin Trust Community and Initiatives and Affected Areas program. “We are helping employ musicians and Concerts in Care keep them working,” said Everton. “They can perform during the day and when we can, we coordinate so they can also perform in the community during the evening.” She said when applying for grants and during fundraising events, relaying the program’s initiatives help to keep the West Kootenay arts community vibrant. “We need to keep musicians working so they can teach the young people in our community and keep the arts alive.” For the first time, the Concerts in Care tour will travel as far east as Invermere, before circling back for
a show in Creston at the beginning of the week; Tuesday performances at three Trail long-term care facilities; Talarico Place and Castleview Care Centre in Castlegar mid week; Thursday, Nelson and Kaslo; and Friday performances in Nelson and New Denver. The Health Arts Society formed in 2006, and since that time has delivered over 4,500 professional music and theatre performances to audiences in health care settings. Now, with sister societies in every province, the organization is the largest live arts presenter in Canada to people in care, bringing some of the country’s finest performers to people who can no longer enjoy performances in concert halls and theatres. “I’ve had people come up to me smiling, and people come up to me with tears,” said Everton. “It meant so much to them that we took that time to be part of their lives. More than anything that’s why we do this. So they can be part and not left out.”

Toy Run throttle ready to crank Jim Sinclair West Kootenay Advertiser
Each autumn (and once in a while at other times of year) a benevolent rumble punctuates West Kootenay life and it follows a well-planned route. The West Kootenay Toy Run is carried out by well-meaning motorcycle enthusiasts who enjoy getting together and supporting a cause that is always pressing, always worthwhile. With all-too-many families the household budget just doesn’t allow for the purchase of toys for the little ones. For some, even groceries and utilities are a stretch. The toy run has helped to ease this situ-
ation over the years. Since it began in 1988 the West Kootenay Toy Run has rounded up a mountain of treasures to be distributed by the folks who know best how to do it. Registration only costs $10, or a new toy donation per person. Toys are preferred! The run is set for take off on Sunday, September 7 and here’s the route it will take: A Harley-mounted Santa will escort riders through downtown Castlegar starting at 10 a.m., followed by a 30-minute trip to Nelson to pick up toys collected by Hippersons Hardware. Noon means a great lunch supplied by firefighters at the Salmo Firehall.
Downtown Trail is the next stop, in front of Ferraro Foods to pick up more toys from Wolf ’s Den Tattoo. From there it’s on to Rossland’s Golden City Days to pick up toys collected by the local Legion branch, Eagles clubs and other generous folks. At 3:30 p.m. the run will wind up at the Castlegar Community Complex. Riders can unwind over a great meal courtesy of Castlegar Special Olympics, live music and refreshments provided by the Castlegar Fire Dept. Of course we can’t forget to mention that this is where the draw will be made for the grand raffle prize: a 2014

Superintendent’s Message We are planning that all schools will be open at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2nd for the registration of students new to the district and for any local Kindergarten and Grade One pupils not previously registered. Should the existing strike action by teachers require a delayed start to the school year then please check out the school district website for any and all updates regarding school start-up. Assuming teachers are not on strike, students will report for instruction on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at times noted below. September 2nd will be a shortened day for students. Shortening the day will allow students an opportunity to become acquainted with their school, while at the same time enabling teachers to finalize their preparations for Wednesday, September 3rd, the first full day of instruction. Kindergarten students will have gradual entry over the first week and a half so please contact your school for those times. To our existing students and families welcome back! To our new students and families, whether you are just starting kindergarten or moved here over the summer, a special warm welcome to your new school and district.

Sculpture Talk Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.
Sherlin Hendrick
Counting Blessings (bronze) The West Kootenay is undeniably full of talented artists. While Castlegar can rightfully call itself the “sculpture capital of Canada” thanks to Sculpturewalk and its growing popularity, local and regional sculptors are coming to the fore just as festival organizers have intended from the beginning. Nelson’s Sherlin Hendrick is a relative newcomer to the area but her sculpting pedigree is impressive. Originally from the United States, Hendrick is now a dual citizen and has lived in Nelson for nine years. From her heritage home studio in Nelson’s uphill area, she creates porcelain and medium-fired clay sculptures that are soothing, serene and from the heart. “I am always intrigued by the universality of the human
spirit,” she says. “My figurative sculptures like Counting Blessings are inspired by the endless forms and gestures found within us. I believe we learn from studying others as well as ourselves.” Drawing from the multicultural, multi-racial human imagery so abundant globally, her figures are a composite of both her imagination and people she has known, met or used as models. “ I try to capture the subtle yet complex beauty of the human form to create universal ethnic portrayals,” she says. “The variety and possibilities presented by people is infinite.” Like so many of her pieces, Counting Blessings radiates serenity and peacefulness. A small work in size, it is full of detail and calm. A bald man sits lotus- like, his lower body covered by an enveloping, cascading robe. His head is bowed, eyes slightly downcast but alert in openness, acceptance and passivity. One hand protrudes from his robe, resting at the opening over his heart. The gesture suggests welcome and inner contentment. The slight irregularity of the shaven head, the marginally furrowed brow and the faintest hint of a smile all reinforce the aura Counting Blessings emanates while speaking to Hendrick’s talent for fine detail. “Many viewers might think this is a sculpture of Buddha, but it is more generalized. I deliberately leave the depiction open to interpretation, so in this instance it could be
an old man seated on a street corner or a monk in a Tibetan monastery. The universality of the figure and the imparted emotions are more important to me than saying, “This is exactly what you are seeing!” I leave that for the audience to determine.” Hendrick finishes her presence-filled works in a variety of materials, using multiple layers of smoke, raku, glazes and paints as she sees fit. Her sculpture for last year’s Touchstone Museum and Gallery Members show, Big Buck, displays her coloration techniques well. The sculpture that flanked one side of the entrance into the display by 63 local artists is fantastically coloured and shaded – from jet black through copper, bronze, and creams to pure white. Counting Blessings is more restrained in its patina, as fits the nature and emotion of the work she has chosen to display here. A member of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club in New York City, Hendrick has displayed extensively in northeastern United States and western Canada, including the National Museum Gallery in New York and the Chesterwood Museum in Massachusetts. Purchased works are permanently displayed in those states and Pennsylvania. Locally, she has exhibited at the Kootenay Gallery of Art and other venues in addition to the Touchstones show in 2013. Her sculpture has won numerous awards, including the Phoenix Gallery Solo Competition curated by Lisa Dennison, Chief Curator of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. It is a world away from the West Kootenay art scene in some ways, but Hendrick is excited about appearing at Sculpturewalk. “I am really looking forward to being part of such a great show,” she says enthusiastically. “There is always amazing variety and quality on display!” Counting Blessings definitely adds to the quality and variety of this year’s sculptures.
Simone Schlichting
Playful Souls (bronze)
Nelson artist Simone Schlichting was raised in an artistic rural household in the Slocan Valley. As a result, she has grown up surrounded by and immersed in two of her passions: horses and creating fine jewelry. Learning metal-working with her brother from their Dad, Passmore’s Carl Schlichting, and always owning horses has shaped her career immensely. She combines her two passions in a highly successful business that pays tribute to her place of upbringing in its name – Valhalla Studios. With her jewelry lines expanding and her work being available in more galleries and shops, locally and interprovincially, Schlichting is moving to-
wards figurative sculpture. Her talent and skill is well displayed in Playful Souls – her second sculpture displayed at Sculpturewalk in as many years. Last year, she exhibited Spirit Lives On. A stunning bust of a horses head, it was her first bronze. “There is a considerable degree of difference designing jewelry versus three-dimensional sculpting,” she notes. “With my equine jewelry pieces, I always keep the design relatively simple, drawing on Art Noveau influences. Figurative sculpting is a different art, even though the subject matter is the same. Here you have to account for mass, heft and relative realism in an appealing form.” Playful Souls bears witness to her willingness to experiment and be more bold in her interpretation. It is a work that shows maturity as she explores another creative outlet for her love of the equine form. Three stylized horses – two rearing, one bucking – are encircled by their tails and manes, creating continuity and flow in the piece. The ribbons of manes and tails are graceful and playful, swirling wildly, binding the piece together carousel-like. The concentric nature of the work balances the whole, displaying the spirited energy and classical lines of her favourite subject. There is ample energy and abandon in Playful Souls,
as Schlichting intended. Casting in bronze with lustrous patinas emphasizes the splendour of her passionate sculpture. A large white stone provides great contrast as the base. Drawing on her upbringing as a horse owner since she was twelve – her first purchased with her own money, no less – she shows the beauty and bearing of her favourite study in her sculptures, and in her elegant jewelry. Her talent for strong, simple lines make her pendants, brooches, earrings and cufflinks – each piece designed and created by Schlichting herself – in sterling silver, gold and occasionally copper unique and desired works of art. They are showing up in more locations across the country as Valhalla Studios and her output grows. “Jewelry making will always be the mainstay of my public work,” she says assuredly. “To create something that is proudly worn by others as an accent or a highlight is special. Having said that, sculpting in various forms is always something I love to pursue. Sculpturewalk provides an opportunity to create on a somewhat larger scale in a different art form.” Learning metal working from her father and formally trained as a goldsmith, Schlichting also spent ten years as a mount maker, creating customized frameworks to display museum and gallery artifacts. Teaming up with her father and brother to sculpt in snow and ice each winter, Schlichting’s talent is apparent regardless of the medium – certainly when the subject is usually, though not exclusively, equine. Playful Souls highlights her burgeoning skills as a sculptor. The exuberance and humanity of her horses is lovingly captured in her latest work displayed here. www.equinejewellery.com SPONSORED by

RDCK awards park contract TAMARA HYND
West Kootenay Advertiser
The Regional District of the Central Kootenay board is investing over $85,000 to create a four-park management plan. The plan — which includes Balfour Beach, Crescent Valley Beach, Waterloo Eddy and Pass Creek, as well as a design development plan for Crescent Valley Beach Park — is intended to provide direction on development and use of the parks for 10 years. Kelowna-based Ecoscape Environmental Consultants Ltd. was awarded the contract

last week. Each park has a unique designation. Balfour Beach and Waterloo Eddy are both undeveloped waterfront regional parks under Crown land tenure with the Ministry of Forests for regional park use. Crown land tenures do not allow for exclusive use and any improvements need approval from the province. No permanent structures may be fixed to the ground. The well used Crescent Valley Beach Park is 2.53 hectares of waterfront on the Slocan River. It is entirely with in the agricultural land reserve and was recently donated to the RDCK for park purposes.

RDCK contract awarded continued from page A6
Pass Creek Regional Park is a well established 14.6 hectare park in Robson, across the Columbia River from Castlegar. The RDCK property, which includes camping and sports fields, has been developed thanks to the efforts of many volunteers. Waterloo Eddy is a relatively small park in lower Ootischenia at 3.7 hectares, the majority of which is zoned as limited recreation. The remaining area is zoned as special features due to its archaeological potential. In a report to the board, development services manager Sangita Sudan wrote that Ecoscape scored the highest in the RDCK evaluation committee’s review. While the RDCK received four proposals, Sundan wrote that EEC’s strength was their project approach and methodology. “They also demonstrated a clear understanding of the scope of what is required and have well defined roles and responsibilities of key personnel. Their team includes ecolo-

gists, planners, GIS technician, facilitators and architects (the MMM Group Ltd.) to oversee the landscape development for Crescent Valley Beach,” she said. “Each park has high conservation values which showcase the region’s biological diversity. The park management plans will identify these values, in addition to issues, opportunities, and constraints associated with the parks to establish goals and objectives that can be implemented [over the] next ten years.” Creating the plan will involve a public consultation process, including surveys and open houses. Sudan wrote that “this will enable the RDCK to enhance the overall usability, access and experience of each park while considering the cost of further development to get there. Currently the purpose and operations statements are the only planning documents available for the parks and are limiting as they don’t provide the true cost or the overall vision of the community for the park.”

Question of the Week
Cool back to college cars for under $15,000 While some lucky students may have received new cars as high school graduation gifts, the odds are most will have scrimped and saved from part-time to buy that first set of wheels. Whatever the financial circumstances, young buyers will surely share the desire for a car that is economical to operate. Here are five picks available in Canada for under $15,000 – all prices quoted exclude taxes and delivery charges.
Extra dollars bring techy additions that transform it into a Wi-Fi hotspot and enable the downloading of useful in-car apps to aid navigation. An Ecotec 1.2-litre, four-cylinder engine, mated to a five-speed tranny, provides the Spark! Sips gas at 6.4/5.7 L/100kms (city/hwy).

Liked equally well whether it’s new or almost new By Zack Spencer
The Kia Soul has been on my recommendation list ever since it came out in 2010. For those looking for something bigger than a compact car but not as large or expensive as a compact SUV, it works. The original Soul was one of the first vehicles to receive Kia’s new design architecture. That bold, fun attitude and design has been improved in for 2014, taking the best of the old model and updating it to a whole other level. The 2014 Soul recently won the Red Dot Design Award, kind of like the Academy Awards for car design and it also took home the Best Family Car under $30,000 from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). So, it is already off to a good start in its first year of production and should be considered by anyone looking at a compact car replacement. Looks What is the Soul and how does it compare to the rest of the market? Well, it falls in size between a compact hatchback car and a small SUV, a true crossover. The two main rivals for this car are the Nissan Cube and Scion XB, but compared to those cars this is a much more polished effort in design and content. The body has been updated with slightly larger dimensions in width and length but the roof has been dropped by a centimeter. The front air intake is much bigger and the headlights look more aggressive. The back has
a large black section around the rear bumper to help lift the eye, where the older car had a long, slightly droopy back end. Prices range from $16,995 all the way to $26,995 for the model scene here. That might sound like a lot but this top SX Luxury trim is packed with goodies that would cost a lot more on a compact SUV. It has polished alloy wheels, HID headlamps and LED tail lamps, a huge panoramic sunroof and automatic folding outside mirrors. Inside What continues to amaze me is just what is offered in a compact vehicle and Kia, in particular, jams more stuff in than anyone else. This top model has heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, leather seats, a big 8-inch navigation screen with backup camera, satellite radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, power moon roof and more. Now most buyers will shop in the middle EX trim and it starts at $20,895 also well equipped. One of the main reasons for the popularity of the Soul is the ease of use, meaning older buyers can get into the car thanks to the big doors and slightly higher seats, when compared with a compact car. The back seat is very roomy and has a flat floor for easy access for children. The cargo rear isn’t as big as a compact SUV but for a city runabout it does a great job because there is storage under the floor and the seats fold for more room.

There is comfort in knowing the Soul isn’t just liked by the initial buyer but by the used car buyer too.
Zack Spencer
’’
Drive Kia has a two-engine approach to the Soul. The base model gets a 130hp 1.6L 4-cylinder engine and all other trim levels get a larger 2.0L engine with 164hp. The same is true with the transmission; the base has a standard 6-speed manual transmission and all others get a 6-speed auto. The larger 2.0L engine was introduced into the last model but now it has the benefit of an updated chassis to get the most out of the Soul in terms of handling. The body has been strengthened and attention has been placed on noise and vibration from the engine and suspension. This all comes together to make a great city car that can dash in and out
of traffic with ease and lets the passengers relax and enjoy the cars amenities. One of the reasons I think this is an alternative to a small SUV is the high seating position, great outward visibility and solid fuel economy, using 8.5L/100km in the city and 6.6L on the highway. The Soul would be just fine in the winter if driven sensibly and equipped with proper winter tires. Not everyone needs all wheel drive; front wheel drive is just fine. Verdict The Soul is already an award winner and has a dedicated buyer base. In fact, the Soul also won the 2014 ALG Residual Value Award for the subcompact utility class. This means that, the company, ALG
believes this Soul will hold its value better than the competition. Yes, this class is small but there is comfort in knowing the Soul isn’t just liked by the initial buyer but by the used car buyer too. If you are in the market for a compact hatchback or small SUV, do yourself a favour and try the Soul. My fully loaded tester was about the same price as a most base model compact SUVs but this runabout has attitude to spare. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca The Lowdown Power: 1.6L 4-cylinder with 130hp or 2.0L with 164hp Fill-up: 8.5L/6.6L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $16,995-$26,995
Drivers, don’t forget to shoulder check for cyclists. If you’re going to make a turn it’s really important to check the inside lane to make sure that a cyclist is not approaching your blind spot.

Five of the coolest nearly extinct cars By Rob Sass
The attrition rate of cars from the mid-disco to late Reagan-era is huge. And while it would be great to see someone somewhere driving any one of the cars on this list, in truth, it’s hard to remember the last time anybody was seen driving any of them. Here are five favorite nearly extinct cars: 1971-77 Mercury Capri — Few people remember the 1980s Fox-body Mustang’s near-identical twin, the Mercury Capri. Fewer still can recall the Australianbuilt front-wheel-drive convertible Capri. This isn’t either of those cars— it’s not even the first to wear the Capri badge. It’s the German Ford mini-Mustang Capri. Sold in the U.S. through Mercury dealers and marketed as “The Sexy European” with an assortment of four- and six-cylinder engines, it was nice looking and great to drive—at least we’re assured of this from vintage road tests. One Capri recently offered on Bring-a-Trailer.com was the first that we’ve seen in ages. Chrysler Conquest/Mitsubishi Starion — The Conquest was the captive import twin of the Mitsubishi Starion. In the hottest turbo spec with 197 HP, these cars would put the fear of God into Porsche 924/944owners who had the privilege of paying almost twice as much for less performance. Where have they all gone? 1969-75 International Harvester Travelall — The Travelall was the Scout’s
big brother, and while Scouts are still regularly seen (particularly in the summer with tops off), the Travelall has all but disappeared. In reality, it was one of the pioneers of the modern SUV and one of the first vehicles to offer anti-lock brakes. Sadly, it was completely overshadowed by the Jeep Wagoneer. Chrysler Laser/ Dodge Daytona Z Turbo — The K-car platform saved Chrysler in the 1980s and underpinned nearly everything that they built, including the sporty Laser/ Daytona twins. The car was nowhere near as bad as the foregoing would suggest; 2.2- and 2.5-liter turbo fours produced anywhere from 175 HP to 224 HP in their hottest states of tune. Carroll Shelby versions of the Daytona are somewhat collectible, assuming you can find one. 1975-81 Volkswagen Scirocco MKI — The Scirocco was the spiritual successor to the Karmann-Ghia. It followed the same formula of a pretty Italian body over more pedestrian underpinnings (in this case a body designed by Ital Design clothing Rabbit-derived mechanicals). No matter, it was a decent handler and quick enough for the day. Today, there are probably more Bentley Continentals on the road than MK I Sciroccos. Taking the rocky mountain way Alexandra Straub
To say the drive from Vancouver to Calgary offers scenic vistas galore would be an understatement. And the opportunity to drive it the allnew 2015 Volkswagen GTI made it still more irresistible an opportunity. Time constraints allowed only for the most direct route there; taking the TransCanada, the 3, the 5 and then again onto the Highway 1. Appreciating the incredible topographical features the Trans Canada has to offer is something I don’t always do. But with a passenger from Ontario ogling the scenery changes, it made me proud to live in such a spec-
tacular place. Okay, I was a lot proud. Whether driving surrounded by lush, emerald vegetation, desert or engulfed in mountain, there was no shortage of ocular stimulation in our 360 view. Furthermore, the GTI is no sleeper either. In fact, it’s probably my favourite VW on the market. And it got a lot better for 2015. Now in its seventh generation, it’s lighter than Golf Mk6, bigger, more fuel efficient, more powerful, and just more awesome. For a starting MSRP of $27,995, you get the updated 2.0L, TSI turbocharged engine, which now boasts 210 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The cabin is also roomier, thanks to
its augmented dimensions. While the overnight trip didn’t warrant filling the 645L cargo area to the brim, it’s nice to know you could bring a carload of people, along with their gear, and still have an enjoyable time. The GTI builds on its razor sharp handling, improves the suspension and allows the driver to still have a great time behind the wheel. Not to mention, the 6-speed manual gearbox – it also comes in a 6-speed DSG automatic – is as smooth in shifts as can be. Being stuck in city traffic isn’t ideal, but when you can rev the engine a little higher, wait to shift and breathe in the excitement of the turbocharged ponies, what more can you ask for?

’’
You could also ask for beautiful scenery. Check. Prior to Revelstoke, if you’re heading east, there’s 3 Valley Gap. It appears almost out of nowhere. Looking like a cross between a Swiss chalet – no, not the place where you get a quarter chicken dinner – and an establishment you might recall from a Stephen King novel, this building that has more than 200 rooms reflects effortlessly on the lake in front of it. With the mountains towering over,
the heritage ghost town certainly has some, er, charm. However, the strongest charm in the drive comes from the GTI. You could even say it’s the grandfather, or the inspiration for the term “hot hatch.” It’s not only hot in appearance, but in personality. It’s a car that does everything and does it well. It’s quiet at highway speeds. It’s tame in traffic, but inspiring on the twisty roads. And even on the track. It can also be entertaining.
With the promise of wildlife “for the next 3 km,” my driving partner and I eagerly anticipated the sighting of some sort of horned mammal. A mountain goat would do. We’d even be okay with a bear. But alas, no such luck. Not even with a jaunt through Banff National Park. That’s okay, the premium Fender audio system did a good job of distracting our melancholy thoughts from the lack of wildlife sightings to the musical stylings of
rock and roll. As I slipped out of the plaidclad seats, bid adieu to the shifter whose knob is likened to golf ball – how appropriate – and gave back the keys to the GTI, it was bittersweet. The adventure was fun, the surroundings breathtaking, and then mixing it with a car that has the complete package? Now that’s a road trip to remember. Five student worthy cars under ten grand By Bob McHugh
Finding five used cars under ten grand doesn’t sound like too big a challenge, until a “for a college student” stipulation is added. In my mind, this adds a few
requirements as the car has to be, easy on fuel, reliable, easy to park, good on gas, thrives on abuse, room for friends, room for a bike and camping gear, super fuel efficient ... and look good!
So, bearing in mind the last requirement is a highly subjective one and ignoring the (no brainer) most popular car in Canada (Honda Civic), here are five vehicle suggestions – in no particular order:
Pontiac Vibe (2010 or older): Although the Pontiac Vibe looks different, you also know this compact 4-door hatchback as the Toyota Matrix. A joint (GM/Toyota) production venture ended with the 2010
model year, as did the Pontiac brand. The resale value of a Vibe is generally lower than a same year/condition Matrix, or conversely, you may be able to buy a newer/lower mileage Vibe.
The ’09 Vibe was a second generation redesign and a slightly bigger model that came in front-drive and all-wheel-drive editions, and in base and GT trim levels. The base engine is a gas-miser 1.8-litre (132 horse-

The 2009 model was a second generation redesign with a more powerful 117 horsepower (up from 109-horsepower) 1.5-litre engine that’s mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or optional fivespeed automatic. In the Sport edition, this automatic also comes with paddle shift gear selection at the steering wheel. Fuel consumption (1.5L/FWD): 7.1/5.5 L/100 km (city/highway) Jeep Patriot (2010 or older): The Patriot could also be called “Jeep Light”, as it’s an affordable, compact yet capable SUV/wagon that’s surprisingly fuel-efficient. Available in both front-drive and four-wheeldrive configurations, Jeep launched Patriot for the 2007 model year and it’s a good match of an active lifestyle young person that enjoys the outdoors. Patriot came in Sport, North and Limited trim levels and the base engine is a 2.0-litre that can produce 158-horsepower and 2.4-litre that can produce 172 horsepower is the upgrade. The transmissions offered were a 5-speed manual transmission or a fuel-efficient CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic. If serious 4-wheeling is contemplated look for models with a trail-rated Freedom II off-road package that adds protective skid plates, etc. The down-side is increased weight and higher fuel consumption.

Fuel consumption (2.0L/ FWD): 8.9/6.9 L/100 km (city/highway) Fuel consumption (2.4L/4WD): 9.9/8.2 L/100 km (city/highway) Nissan Versa (2011 or older): The Nissan Versa may look small on the outside, but this four-door sedan or hatchback has an amazing amount of space on the inside. The extra head and leg room provided make it a very good match for a taller or bigger than average young person.
Sold as a four-door sedan or a (sportier) five-door hatchback, the Mazda3 has been a huge sales success in Canada. The four-door sedan editions of this Mazda3 come with (148-horsepower) 2.0-litre engine and in GX and GS trim levels. Sedan GT and (hatchback) Mazda3 Sport come in GS and GT trim levels and with a (156-horsepower) 2.3-litre engine, with more torque at lower engine speeds. A height adjustable, good supporting driver’s seat plus a standard tilt and telescopic
option. Its electronic-assist steering has an extra-light feel and it can turn on a (10.4 m) dime, making Versa an easy vehicle to park. Fuel consumption (1.6L/ FWD): 7.7/5.8 L/100 km (city/highway – 5 Manual) Fuel consumption (1.8L/ FWD): 8.5/6.2 L/100 km (city/highway – 4 Automatic) Fuel consumption (1.8L/ FWD): 7.3/5.8 L/100 km (city/highway - CVT) Mazda3 (2009 or older): The first generation Mazda3 (2004 to 2009) set a new performance standard in the economy car segment.
Versa offers seating for four (squeeze five) full-sized adults and extra-large rear passenger doors also make getting in or out easier. The lower-priced sedan comes with a 1.6-litre (107-horsepower) engine and a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. The hatchback comes with a 1.8-litre (122-horsepower) engine and a 6-speed manual, 4-speed automatic or a CVT automatic. Prior to 2010, a base Versa didn’t come with ABS (antilock braking system), and electronic stability control wasn’t even offered as an
steering column make the Mazda3’s driving position particularly praiseworthy. It definitely offers the best driving experience, but popularity also makes Mazda3 the priciest pick of this group. Fuel consumption (2.0L/ FWD): 8.4/6.1 L/100 km (city/highway) Fuel consumption (2.3L/ FWD): 9.5/6.8 L/100 km (city/highway) Reviewing the attributes of these car leads me to suggest there’s at least one suitable for anybody on a budget. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca
