ith enthusiasm that’s hard to contain, Scott Magri stands above the Katzie Slough and imagines a young boy fishing in it, like he did almost 40 years ago. “It would be perfect,” he gushes as a frog leaps into the water, sending bubbles to the surface as it disappears amongst the reeds. A waterway named for the First Nations people who thrived in Pitt Meadows before European settlement, the Katzie Slough
isn’t anything like the one Magri remembers. As a boy, he fished for cutthroat trout in its cool waters. Now, the 10.16-kilometre slough is little more than an irrigation ditch, split into channels. Some of its tributaries have been filled and few native
plants remain on its banks. The slough traverses the city, cutting through established neighbourhoods in the city’s south and eventually heading north across Lougheed Highway into land owned by mall developers SmartCentres. In its heyday, it was a natural drainage and irrigation channel that flushed with the tides, was full of fish and big enough to canoe in. In December, Magri got a cold reception from the city when he pitched his plans to restore the Katzie Slough to its former glory. Undeterred, Magri has pushed on with his plans with support from the Watershed Watch Salm-

on Society. Those plans, however, are threatened by a proposed park, with undulating water features, set to be constructed on undeveloped land at the corner of Airport Way and Bonson Road. “It’s just nuts,” Magri said. The proposed 35-hectare park encountered stiff opposition from nearby residents soon after it was proposed last summer. The city’s plans entail extending an existing community garden, as well as enhancing wetland and wildlife habitat with a low-flow drainage channel, which will connect to already drying Katzie Slough. Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters announced Thursday that she will not seek reelection. After almost nine years on council, Deb Walters will be leaving city hall in No- Walters vember to spend more time with her husband Len, her children, Cayley and Scott, and her twin grandsons, Lennon and Sawyer, who are five months old. Walters has been thinking about stepping aside for several weeks. “It’s just the right time,” she said. “I made the decision a couple of weeks ago, but decided to share it now to see if other people wanted to put their hat in the race.” A two-term councillor before she was elected as the city’s first female mayor in 2011, Walters won with 2,025 votes – 823 more than John Becker, who is running again this year. In her term, she’s seen more than 450 new jobs come to the city and “more are coming everyday.” This year, the city had its lowest tax increase in 12 years. Walters said the city is on the right track. “I’m a little fearful that the brakes are being put on by some people on council, but that’s certainly not the reason I’m not running,” she added. “I’m proud of all the jobs we have created close to home. I’ve made great connection with the provincial government. I’m very proud of the work I’ve done.” • Hazard Tree Removals • Topping & Falling • Pruning & Trimming • Thinning & Shaping • Stump & Root Grinding

‘Staff promised update’ Slough from front
The park’s opponents have no issues with extending the community garden or adding a few trails to an area that’s already lush with trees and full of wildlife. It’s the “low flow channel” and water features that confuse them. The channel proposed by the city would mimic and link to a 260-metre-long (853 feet) “blind” channel and pond created by the Ministry of Transportation in 2011. Initially touted as a way to enhance habitat for fish, studies show the blind channel – a half-million-dollar, taxpayer-funded provincial project – is a failure. So far, 57 per cent of the riparian plantings have died, likely due to combination of heavy clay soils, drought conditions and competition with grasses. “The site’s value as fish habitat is compromised by the generally poor condition in the Katzie Slough watershed,” wrote Mike Pearson, a biologist contracted by the ministry to conduct the study. Pearson found alien plant species – such as reed canary grass, Eurasian water milfoil and parrot feather – are thriving, while native plants have failed to take hold. Even wapato, or Indian potato, are on the decline. Pearson’s report noted 130 wapato were found in 2013, slightly less than the 136 counted in 2012. The lack of fish and fish species were blamed on high water temperatures and low dissolved oxygen concentrations due to algae blooms. The city created a steering committee for the proposed park after hearing opposition from residents. But committee members contend they were lied to about the scope and nature of the project. On Tuesday, they crowded a council meeting to voice their displeasure with the process. The steering committee passed a concept plan and was assured that more details about the project would be given to members after the park design was complete. The committee never got those details. In January, just before the departure of Coun. Doug Bing, council passed the park plan, along with its water features, despite calls from residents to put the project on hold. The vote was close, with Couns. Bing, Gwen O’Connell, Tracy Miyashita and Mayor Deb Walters in favour of the project moving ahead, and Bruce Bell, Janis Elkerton and Dave Murray voting against. Minutes from the January council
Scott Magri is heading a campaign to restore the Katzie Slough, but is meeting resistance from the city. meeting show parks staff promised to return with an update on the park project every two months, but council never received a single update. Mike Stark told council he has been requesting detailed drawings about the proposed park and drainage channel for months, but only received them a week ago. He was angry to learn the project had already tendered and work was set to begin in early September. Stark contends that if the committee had known what the final design was like, the vote would have been different. “I am very disappointed that parks staff have chosen to look at this site in isolation of the surrounding ecosystem,” Stark added after the meeting. “By doing so, they are only creating another environment that will extend the breeding ground for the already prolific invasive species resident in the blind channel and Katzie Slough that is American bullfrog, pumpkinseed, and largemouth bass, to name a few. Their money and focus would be better directed toward rehabilitating the Katzie Slough by restoring the fish habitat and eliminating the invasive species. This new park does little to resolve the core problem.” Keith Nightingale, another committee member, echoed Stark’s comments and called for the whole project to be revisited.
“Two failed ponds don’t make a park,” he told council. Lina Azeez, with the Watershed Watch Salmon Society, which is working to restore the Katzie Slough, is also concerned about the park proposal. “It ties very closely into the Katzie Slough. We understand that there are some options that are much cheaper that should be looked at,” she said. Ken Joyner used to farm the land where the park is proposed and would prefer it be left natural. “Why do you want to bring water into pristine soil – the best in the Fraser Valley,” he asked council. “It makes no common sense to bring water in there now.” Joyner asked O’Connell why she wanted the water feature in the park. “Because I think [the water] will enhance it,” O’Connell replied after chiding Joyner for not addressing her as “Councillor O’Connell.” She added: “I guess in Pitt Meadows

now the rule of thumb is going to be, ‘Don’t do anything because it costs too much. Let’s just leave everything the way it is now because that’s what the neighbours want.’” The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows parks department insists the water features in the park will look nothing like the failing blind channel. “The integration of the TransLinkfunded channel into the park design will create visual interest for visitors through habitat and wildlife viewing opportunities in the park,” said Bruce McLeod, manager of parks. To prevent algae blooms from spreading, more trees will be planted to shade the channel.
Park costs questioned mmartins@mapleridgenews.com
Several members of Pitt Meadows council are questioning how much a proposed park will actually cost taxpayers. The 35-hectare project has a budget of $375,000 – -a sum that includes a $150,000 from TransLink to construct the contentious drainage channel. Canadian Lawn Care Ltd. got the tender for the project at $328,251.42. “I think the project is over budget,” Coun. Bruce Bell said Tuesday, as he expressed frustration with city staff who he claims have failed to update council about the project. Bell was disappointed to learn from residents that the project was moving ahead. Some stumbled upon a preconstruction meeting for the park while on a walk last week. Not included in the total costs are design and engineering work done by ISL Engineering. A collapsed culvert under Airport Way will also be replaced in conjunction with the park project, but city hall does not know how much the replacement will cost. Bell says if all the costs were added, the project could total close to $500,000. Bell, Janis Elkerton and Dave Murray would like the project to be put on hold and intend to propose that at a meeting on Tuesday. “To extend a waterway that is already failing into the new park would not be prudent,” said Bell.
Rally The Watershed Watch Salmon Society is organizing a rally to stop another drainage channel being constructed in the proposed park. The rally will take place at 5 p.m. on Sept. 6 at the corner of Airport Way and Bonson Road. To learn about Scott Magri’s Katzie Slough Restoration Project, visit ksrp.ca.

City mulls stop work order for soil mixing operation Owner needs to supplement farm income By M o ni s ha M a r tin s mmartins@mapleridgenews.com
The City of Pitt Meadows wants to put a stop to a soil mixing business that’s been operating on farmland for almost 30 years on a temporary permit. At a committee meeting Tuesday, council was reluctant to accommodate Hank Bitter’s request for his business located at 17607 Ford Road Detour to continue. “I don’t disagree that farmers should have a way to supplement their income. However, this is an industrial operation,” said Mayor Deb Walters. “We wouldn’t allow it to happen in town; 30 years is far too long. We don’t have personnel to go up there and monitor 24 hours a day. At this time, I am not going to support it.” In 1994, the Agricultural Land Commission approved the first “nonfarm use” application for a topsoil screening and mixing business. Since then, Bitter has reapplied for temporary permits. The most recent once expired in 2008.
“I want to stop the operation as soon as our staff can get there.” Coun. Gwen O’Connell “I want to stop the operation as soon as our staff can get there,” said Coun. Gwen O’Connell, who was surprised to hear the business had been operating without proper approval from the city. Bitter, however, pleaded with council to reconsider. As a first generation cranberry farmer, Bitter uses the soil mixing business to supplement his income. He supplies peat moss to the mushroom industry from one portion of the property. Horse and mushroom manure are mixed into some of the

Neighbours are growing increasingly tired of the trucks traveling to and from the property. In a letter to council, they voiced concerns about noise, smells and traffic, including at night. Neighbours did not call for the business to cease operations. Instead, they asked the city

to impose several strict conditions on the temporary permit, including restricting truck traffic from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., imposing a 20 km/hour speed limit on the private road, and restricting the permit to three years. Bitter claimed he has never been approached by the city and would be willing to work with neighbours. He also promised to pay industrial taxes, if that’s what the city wants. “I think I offer a very good service,” said Bitter,
who employs 12 people. “We have many more pluses than minuses. All of a sudden I’m bombarded with a barrage of things. Nobody has ever come to me before.” Council will formally vote on a decision at a regular meeting next week. In the meantime, it referred the application back to the city’s agricultural advisory committee, which previously supported the operation. City staff had recommended that council grant the temporary commercial permit, but imposed strict conditions on it, including a security of $10,000 in the form of a letter of credit. Chief administrative officer Kim Grout said staff will not proceed with a stop work order as “more discussion on the matter is needed before this can be determined.” City staff and neighbours plan to tour the site with Bitter.

Latest tax hike The provincial government announced its latest tax hike on Tuesday. As has been the case in recent years, it did so indirectly. In fact, the announcement was made by the Insurance Corporation of B.C., which plans to raise its basic rates, which all motorists must pay, by 5. 2 per cent. The province is expecting to get $480 million in dividends from ICBC in the three years from 2014 to 2017, and another $1.23 billion from B.C. Hydro. Both of these massive dividend payments are on the back of ratepayers — those who have no choice but to buy electricity from B.C. Hydro and basic auto insurance from ICBC. This is being done so the government can balance its budget and claim to be a good fiscal manager. Meanwhile, the rate increases planned by both corporations are far beyond inflation, and are disguised as being necessary “because of more claims due to distracted driving” (ICBC), and “by the need for capital expenditures.” (B.C. Hydro). No one doubts that there is a need for B.C. Hydro to upgrade its power network, or for ICBC to have enough money to pay for increased claims, whatever the cause. However, claims of balanced budgets by the B.C. Liberals really need to be dissected. The government is not running a surplus from its day-to-day operations. It would be in a constant deficit if it weren’t for these dividends from Crown corporations. Both of these corporations were set up, long ago, to provide benefits to B.C. residents. The province does get additional revenue from the B.C. Lottery Corporation and the Liquor Distribution Branch, but there is a key difference. No one has to buy a lottery ticket or go to a casino. Nor do they have to buy liquor. Those are choices people are free to make. This latest disguised tax increase is unacceptable. – Black Press

Natural world belongs to public The rights of the public to the natural resources outweigh private rights, and must be given its first consideration – the “conservation” president, Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909).

hen the Polley Lake Along the Fraser Dam near Jack Emberly Likely, B.C. ruptured last month – after leaking earlier – it became clear the rights of industry to extract natural resources outweighs those of the public to the diverse benefits of a wild environment. In the case of First Nations, it outweighs cultural identity and livelihood. The 10 billion litres of pond water that destroyed Hazeltine Creek, and 4.5 million cubic meters of sand laced with cadmium, manganese, phosphorous and mercury are proof. Mines minister Bill Bennett smudged his face in a grieving ceremony with First Nations and declared he’d never have believed the breech possible. But private consultants earlier warned that building the dam up instead of out was dangerous. Brian Kynoch, CEO for Imperial Metals, apologized while claiming the pond water was nearly potable. Yet, nearby communities were told not to drink from their streams, and health authorities promised it was safe to eat the flesh

of fish, but not their gonads. There’s an independent panel (all mining experts) to root out the cause of the dam’s failure, and suggest ways to prevent ruptures at other mines, things we already know. “Why would you put a tailings pond – wet pond method –above a watershed in the first place,” asks Geoff Clayton of ARMS. Clayton points to a year 2000 geological abstract by Michael Davies and Stephen Rice (AMEC Earth and Environmental, Vancouver). It confirms the instability of tailing ponds –two to five major incidents per year and 3,500 world-wide – compared to Hydro dams, which, unlike tailing ponds, are monitored 24-7. “They have a requirement of a 1-10,000 year risk of rupture engineered into their design.” In a letter to MLA Doug Bing, Clayton notes two standards for dam safety – one that falls under the Ministry of Lands, Forests and Natural Resources (Hydro dams such as the Alouette) and another for the environment (Polley Lake). The reason, he says, is obvious. “Because we have a valley floor with lots of people. The head count around Polley is small. Wildlife seem to be expendable. Nobody knows this.” Putting tailings in stacks away from water is a modern process used in other parts of the world to avoid disasters. Rice and Davies say, “tailings in dry stacks can’t leach into the environment and withstand catastrophic forces.” That includes earthquakes, like the one

that shook California last week, and the one we expect soon. Hazeltine is now a tailings pond sluice that feeds into Quesnel Lake, which feeds into the Quesnel River, which feeds into the Fraser which feeds into Georgia Strait. Quesnel Lake, home to 30-pound trout, draws sport fishermen from around the world. Guides and lodge owners worry about its future. “I’ve been to hell,” said Morton. “It’s hard to be here and not hate humanity. This was inevitable. Everyone knew it would happen.” The Cariboo I know was a paradise. As a 12-year-old, I caught three-pound trout in crystal-clear streams and lost all track of time. Years later, I paddled the Bowron Lakes – not far from Likely - and ran the frisky Cariboo River, which will be poisoned when the rains come. You can listen to the haunting calls of loons and wolves at night in this magical place, Aboriginal folk have always tried to help the rest of us understand, and accept their reverence of nature as our guides prior to development. “They’re trying to draw us back to old values. It’s time to listen and change,” Clayton said. “The rights of the majority demand that friends of the environment lead panels stacked with industry and government ... because the natural world belongs to the public in common, not to a few transient politicians and corporations.”

Teacher demands outrageous Editor, The News: Teaching is an honourable profession and most of us will agree that most teachers are completely sincere in their job, and we respect them for that. However, it is those teachers who are ultimately responsible for the mess we are in regarding the current conflict. After all, they, the members of the teachers’ federation, are the ones who have, for several decades now, elected ultramilitant executives. When bargaining time comes, they start out with outlandish demands, far beyond what they themselves expect to get. That way they try to convince the public that they have made very significant concessions, when in fact, even after cutting back 50 per cent, the demands are still outrageous. And don’t compare your wage packages to teachers in other provinces, but compare it to what thousands of British Columbians have to deal with. For that matter, when will we, the people that pay every

No pain, no gain Editor, The News: Teachers need to stick it out. There will always be those who belittle teachers as simply greedy. They will, however, overlook the greediness of the government and, perhaps, their own greediness for that which is important to them, like their taxes, wages, mortgages, transport, food, medical, raising of their children. Pot calling the kettle black? The large majority of teachers are just people who care for their students, but who also care for their families. Supreme Court ruling that indicated that the Liberal government was wrong in tearing up a contract and legislating their own conditions upon the teachers. The government just continues to sidestep the ruling with delay tactics and essentially zero negotiation offerings. Teachers in B.C. do not charge for extra-curricular activities like most teachers in the United States. Maybe they should. If I was a teacher now, I would, foremost, become a self-survivalist. It wouldn’t help me or the students to be burnt out by the government demands, ineffective and meek school boards, derisive parents, or ‘I can do no wrong’ students. Or government threats of punitive penalties or even jail. No pain, no gain. Let the greedy belittlings go on. That is fair in a democracy. Editor, The News: Re: ‘Protect us’ from wild fire, say Maple Ridge residents (The News, July 30). If Coun. Mike Morden is serious about sprinklers protecting homeowners during a forest fire, he is very misinformed. Whether or not we live in a rain forest, there is always a danger of fire. An indoor sprinkler system would be of no use during a forest fire. Perhaps he should watch a few documentaries about nature’s fury before making such ridiculous statements. E. Willmott Maple Ridge
cent of your income, see a complete and open disclosure of teachers’ wage packages, including the cost of all benefits? Furthermore, as members of the BCTF, you are the ones who can tell your executive to settle for the wage offer from the government. You can tell them, because they are answerable to you, not the other way around. That will show that you are sincere when you say that it is all for the children. Once the wage package has been agreed on, that is the time to zero in on class size and composition. But don’t forget that smaller classes means more teachers for the same amount of students and, consequently, less work for the current complement of teachers. One more observation: teachers should be educators, not social workers. It is high time to reverse that trend. There are numerous agencies to do the social work, and furthermore, we have to be much more critical of the parents

On September 12, 1874 Maple Ridge became BC’s sixth incorporated community, only seven short years after the Canadian Confederation. On Friday, September 12, 2014 we will celebrate our 140th Birthday with a FREE family concert in the park that will run from 5:00 pm until 9:30 pm. The bandstand will be called the ‘Port Metro Vancouver Stage’ in recognition of their financial support for the Birthday celebration. Entertainers represent the many talented musicians who live and work in our community. At 7:00 pm there will be a formal ceremony that will include local dignitaries and greetings from Ottawa and Victoria as well as a special drama presentation by members of the Emerald Pig Theatrical Society. Bring a blanket, sweater, lawn chair and the whole family for this wonderful outdoor concert.
The celebration continues on Saturday, September 13 starting at 9:00 am with the Haney Farmers Market at Memorial Peace Park. The market will celebrate the rich history of our community with a strong theme to the amazing food and agricultural legacy of Maple Ridge. The Maple Ridge Museum & Community Archives will have a wonderful display in the bandstand, and there will also be special displays by the Maple Ridge Downtown Business Improvement Association, local agriculture sector and the history of First Nations in the region. This will be a great way to connect with your neighbours and our community. Winners of the Tweetable Poetry contest and Photo contest will also be announced as part of this event. The displays and Farmers Market run until 2:00 pm.
In addition to the concert, you will be able to visit with members of the Operations and Engineering teams, the Maple Ridge Fire Department and the Ridge Meadows RCMP who will be on hand with vehicles they use to do their work in the community every day. It’s a great opportunity to mingle with staff and volunteers plus get your photo taken in the various vehicles that will be on display. There will be souvenir handouts to mark this special Birthday.
Finally, the Birthday celebration ends at the Port Haney Wharf with a special Port Haney Days ‘Movie on the Wharf’ night organized by the Port Haney Neighbourhood Change team. You and your family are invited down to the Wharf to watch the sunset and then a presentation of ‘Shark Tales’ on the outdoor screen. This events starts at 7:00 pm and runs until the movie ends. There will be popcorn and kids’ activities and as with all the other events, it’s completely FREE! We will see you at the Birthday party!

Teachers could vote to cool off bender and government negotiator Peter Cameron. There was no deal between the two sides, but both sides said progress was made in the 90-minute meeting Wednesday afternoon, and mediator Vince Ready was to begin exploratory talks Thursday. The BCTF has not yet responded to the proposal, but Iker indicated he needed union membership approval to halt picketing and urged full

The province has proposed a two-week truce with striking teachers to allow B.C. schools to reopen as scheduled next week while a mediated settlement is pursued. The idea of a coolingoff period allowing classes to start while mediated talks proceed was put to B.C. Teachers Federation president Jim Iker by Education Minister Peter Fass-
mediation to begin immediately. The process to get membership approval could take two to three days. The B.C. Public School Employers Association would also suspend lockout activity if the truce goes ahead. In addition to shutting down pickets, Fassbender’s proposal also calls on the union to set aside potential grievances arising from the last court ruling on class size and composi-
tion, now under appeal by the province. George Serra, president of the Maple Ridge Teacher’s Association, said local teachers were not impressed by Fassbender’s proposal. “We had eight weeks over the summer to use,” said Serra. “We find it a little ironic that all of a sudden he’s looking for a two week cooling off period.” Serra characterized Wednesday’s surprise meeting, called by Fassbender, as “little more
than a media stunt.” He noted Fassbender had a press release prepared even before discussions began. “We are hoping that with Ready involved there is something a bit more hopefully,” said Serra. “Nothing on [Wednesday] was about moving it forward.” B.C. School Trustees Association president Teresa Rezansoff called on both sides to move from their positions to ensure schools open Tuesday.

eighbours seem to be getting used to the idea now that the Barnston Maple Ridge Pump Station at 200th Street and Lougheed Highway is nearing completion. The $46-million project, which straddles the border of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, is less than a year from operation. Then the five big pumps start up and begin pushing water to Maple Ridge’s thirsty and growing eastern suburbs, as well as across the Fra-
ser River to homes in Surrey and Langley. “It should be very quiet actually,” said Metro Vancouver’s managing engineer Steven Lewis, who’s been keeping an eye on the project since construction started in March 2013. “We’re not anticipating any noises issues whatsoever from the pump station at all.” That’s because the machinery, five new Xylem pumps that will be able to move more than 300 million litres of water a day, will be below ground level, then enclosed in a new building with green roof with soil on top. Metro Vancouver is building the pump station to prepare for more demand for tap water from suburbs in Maple

Ridge and across the river. The station will take water from the main that runs beneath the Lougheed Highway from the Coquitlam reservoir and pump it in pipes that run in two directions, south across the river and east into Maple Ridge. The pumps, now in place but awaiting to be connected to their 1,000 horsepower electrical motors, will raise the pressure in the water mains. “And by raising the pressure, we get higher flow through the mains,” said Lewis. One feature of the pump station that had been considered is on hold, however. It had been thought that during times of low water demand that turbines could have been installed to take advantage of the normal, gravity-led flow of water. That could have produced electricity to offset the cost of power. But that feature is on
hold for the moment, Lewis said. In the meantime, the Barnston Maple Ridge Pump Station should open on schedule next June. Once operating, the pump station will be controlled remotely from the Seymour filtration plant in North Vancouver, with staff making only periodic checks at the station. The pump station dovetails with another Metro Vancouver project just underway in Maple Ridge – building a new metrewide water main from along 128th Avenue from 200th to 224th Street. That new supply will also ensure there’s plenty of water for the dishwashers and lawns of the new homes being built in eastern Maple Ridge. Completion for that project is expected early next year, after which widening of 128th Avenue to four lanes will begin.

Mayoralty hopeful wants no more pay day loan offices ‘A lot of clients get trapped’ By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
One of the candidates for Maple Ridge mayor says it’s time to put the brakes on allowing pay day loan companies opening their doors anywhere within the district. Tyler Shymkiw is proposing there be a moratorium on the opening of any more operations that offer short-term advances on paycheques, and charge steep interest rates for the privilege of doing so. “These pay day loan companies tend to congregate in the lower income neighbourhoods. We’ve tried to create affordable housing in Maple Ridge. I think that creates a target for them,” Shymkiw said Thursday. “It’s something that I saw firsthand when I was chairman of the [Friends in Need] food bank. “A lot of clients got trapped in that really horrific cycle of debt with it. What happens is they have to re-borrow before they pay that [first loan] back.” Then they have to borrow from one pay day loan company to pay another, and so on. Shymkiw sent out the release Thursday, noting that pay day loan companies can charge up to 23 per cent for a two-week loan. That works out to 600 per cent interest over a year. “This is not what Maple Ridge is about,” he said in the release. “While the current political leadership has expanded gaming in our downtown core, we don’t need to double down on its negative effects by continuing to allow these sorts of predatory lending services to expand.” Other municipalities have banned them for years, he added. Institutes like Vancity credit union are starting to offer short-term loans so people have an alternative. “We need to take a stand on this if we’re going to start improving our downtown core and reaffirming our commitment to helping all families.”
In the release, Coun. Corisa Bell, seeking a second term on council, backed the idea. “We need to protect our friends and neighbours from having their lives destroyed by predators because of shortterm cash-flow issues,” she said. Shymkiw, though, said he and Bell are not running as a team for the Nov. 15 civic election, when a new council will be chosen for the next four years. “I wouldn’t say we’re running as a team. It means we agree on this specific issue.”
Dueck says farewell Another spot has opened up on Maple Ridge council, bringing to three the number of seats left vacant by departing councillors. Judy Dueck, who’s served four terms, said last week that she won’t be seeking a fifth.
“It was a tough decision. I do love local politics. It’s all good,” she said. Dueck will stay on as manager of health and safety with the Maple Ridge- Shymkiw Pitt Meadows school board. “It has been a great privilege and honour to represent and serve the residents of Maple Ridge as a councillor and school trustee spanning the last 21 years,” she said in a release. She hopes future councils will follow the current official community plan that sets out the general growth of the district. The plan calls for residential expansion to Thornhill, the area east of 248th Street, once Maple Ridge’s population hits 100,000. But that’s going to be a while yet, and residents
will have a say in how that growth takes place. “I see commercial opportunities out there which will help offset the cost for residential.” Dueck expects the new council to begin implementing the commercial-industrial strategy which sets out where industry will grow and is disappointed that the process took so long under the current council. “Jobs and shopping are still near and dear to the people of Maple Ridge. “Jobs, definitely jobs is something they need to focus on.” Cheryl Ashlie has announced she’s leaving politics and Mike Morden is running for mayor, leaving three vacancies on council to be filled in the Nov. 15 election.

New Maple Ridge candidate proposes shopping study More candidates stepping up for November vote B y Phil Mel nyc hu k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
Karl Lundgren says Maple Ridge is an underachiever. To help reach its potential, Lundgren is running for council in the Nov. 15 election. “I’m a new candidate,” says Lundgren, who lives in Pitt Meadows and works in Port Coquitlam as a travel agent. Lundgren though grew up in Maple Ridge and is more interested in his old home than his current city. “When I was young, I thought it had great potential. I just don’t think it’s living up to what it could have done.” Pitt Meadows seems to be doing better in attracting businesses and
commerce than Maple Ridge, he says. “I just feel that we’re losing out to adjacent communities.” Lundgren made the decision a few weeks ago and plans on making a formal announcement later, as candidate nomination forms can only be filed between Sept. 30 and Oct. 10. Lundgren would like to do a study of local shopping habits to see if or how Maple Ridge is losing to other areas. Instead of bringing more people to the area, he says the Golden Ears and Pitt River bridges are just making it easier for residents to leave. “It’s actually doing more harm than good now.” As the campaign moves towards voting day, Lundgren will put out more announcements. “When it comes down to it, I don’t believe in making a bunch of
promises.” He also wants more transparency in municipal affairs and the election, and says social media can allow candidates to talk directly with voters. Lundgren After serving as president of the Maple RidgePitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce for two years and recently leading the Haney Rotary club, Ken Oliver Holland has decided it’s time to try for council. “I’ve worked here for 18 years. I think it’s time for a change.” Holland works in the housing industry and operates Pinnacle Home Designs. He says Maple Ridge’s cumbersome approval policies

are seeing developers avoid the district in favour of other cities. He’d like to see that streamlined. The rules over parking in the downtown also need review to encourage shopping, he added. Todd Oliver, an instructor at the North Fraser Pretrial Centre in Port Coquitlam, is also running. “I’m tired of being a Monday-morning quarterback,” he said. Oliver says he’s attended most of the public hearings and Maple Ridge council meetings in the last few years. “I want to be a voice for holding the line on the budget.” He says he can do that by looking at the main cost drivers and how the district operates. Working within a government bureaucracy such as B.C. Corrections can give insight to that. He added he wants to bring the greatest good to the greatest number of people at the lowest cost. Candidates need only two nominees to sign their forms in order to get their name on the ballot. Although weeks remain before the filing deadline, several candidates have said they plan to have their names in the next election. Four candidates are trying for the mayor’s seat: Ernie Daykin, Mike Morden, Graham Mowatt and Tyler Shymkiw. Sara Dawn Beckett, Morgan Jensen, Grover Telford, James Buddy Rogers, and Kiersten Duncan also have confirmed they’re challenging for seats on council. Nicole Read may run for either council or mayor. At least three seats will have new councillors following the departure from politics of Judy Dueck and Cheryl Ashlie and Mike Morden’s mayoralty challenge.

lower-priced sedan comes with a 1.6-litre (107-horsepower) engine and a fivespeed manual or four-speed automatic. The hatchback comes with a 1.8-litre (122-horsepower) engine and a six-speed manual, fourspeed automatic or a CVT automatic. Prior to 2010, a base Versa didn’t come with ABS (anti-lock braking system), and electronic stability control wasn’t even offered as an option. Its electronic-assist steering has an extra-light feel and it can turn on a (10.4 m) dime, making Versa an easy vehicle to park. • Mazda3 (2009 or older): The first generation Mazda3 (2004 to 2009) set a new performance standard in the economy car segment. Sold as a four-door sedan or a (sportier) five-door hatchback, the Mazda3 has been a huge sales success in Canada. The four-door sedan editions of this Mazda3 come with (148-horsepower) 2.0-litre engine and in GX and GS trim levels. Sedan GT and (hatchback) Mazda3 Sport come in GS and GT trim levels and with a (156-horsepower) 2.3-litre engine, with more torque at lower engine speeds. A height adjustable, good supporting driver’s seat plus a standard tilt and telescopic steering column make the Mazda3’s driving position particularly praiseworthy. It definitely offers the best driving experience.

Student from 19 It’s mated to either a fivespeed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. In the Sport edition, this automatic also comes with paddle shift gear selection at the steering wheel. • Jeep Patriot (2010 or older): The Patriot is an affordable, compact yet capable SUV/wagon that’s surprisingly fuel-efficient. Available in both frontdrive and four-wheel-drive configurations, Jeep launched Patriot for 2007 and it’s a good match of an active lifestyle young person that enjoys the outdoors. Patriot came in Sport, North and Limited trim levels and the base engine is a 2.0-litre that can produce 158-horsepower and 2.4-litre that can produce 172 horsepower is the upgrade. The transmissions offered were a five-speed manual transmission or a fuel-efficient CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic. • Nissan Versa (2011 or older): The Nissan Versa may look small on the outside, but this four-door sedan or hatchback has an amazing amount of space on the inside. The extra head and leg room provided make it a very good match for a taller or bigger than average young person. Versa offers seating for four (squeeze five) full-sized adults and extra-large rear passenger doors also make getting in or out easier. The

The Internet becoming more important for home buyers By Kerry Vital
For many new home buyers in the Lower Mainland, utilizing the Internet has never been more important. It’s now possible to conduct hours of research and ensure you know exactly what you’re looking for and can afford before purchasing, as well as which features of your new home will fit your lifestyle and allow the home to keep its value down the road.
“The extensive online research conducted by homebuyers is highly evident,” says Intergulf Development Group Vice President Shaadi Faris. “Buyers are coming to us with knowledge of how the purchase process works, and having their priorities firmly established.” Faris has seen this play out at Intergulf ’s Burnaby condominium project The Park Metrotown, where potential buyers have been coming into the presentation centre and

asking questions that used to only be asked by investors and real estate professionals. “They are aware of market trends, know what specific features and dimensions they are looking for, and have firm figures in mind,” says Faris. “Our marketing efforts now speak to strata fees and unit prices in dollars per square foot, and point out all the features that will impact the buyer’s investment, including the location of the parking stalls and storage lockers.” While the younger buyer is leading the way regarding the use of digital media, Faris points out that there are buyers of all ages using technology to research their potential home. Google recently teamed up with the U.S.-based National Association of Realtors to conduct a study looking at how important digital media was to home buyers. The study found that 90 per cent of homebuyers search online before and during the buying process.

Polygon is bringing Seaside architecture to North Delta with Lakeside, its executive townhome project in the master-planned community of Sunstone. Homeowners also benefit from membership to the Sunstone Club, below right, with over 12,000 square feet of amenities including an outdoor pool.
Living Lakeside at Sunstone By Kerry Vital
Waterfront living is possible in North Delta at Polygon’s Lakeside, an enclave of executivestyle townhomes in the master-planned community of Sunstone. “These townhomes feel like single-family homes,” says sales manager Pat Lok. “At 25 to 35 feet wide, they’re wider than a typical Vancouver lot!” With a variety of three-bedroom two-
level plans, most 2,000 square feet or larger, Lakeside is appealing to families and emptynesters alike. This is the final collection of the master-on-main homes being built at Sunstone, making it even more appealing. “These are beautiful homes, and there are less than 20 remaining,” Lok says, “with a limited number of each plan type left, it’s a great time to visit us.” Curb appeal is not in short supply at Lakeside. The homes are built using classic Seaside architecture, with pitched roofs, stone and wood detailing and window boxes. Street-fronting homes include picket fencing and stone post entry gates to complement the architecture. Buyers will be able to enjoy plenty of time outdoors on their private decks or patios, which feature gas hookups for your barbecue. In addition, each home has a private fenced yard. Every home has a double-
car side-by-side garage, which Lok points out has been a selling feature at Lakeside. Inside, some plan types feature dramatic vaulted ceilings along with warm laminate wood flooring throughout the main level living areas. Radiant in-floor heating is

featured throughout the main level, adding to the warm and cozy feeling of the entire home. The kitchen is elegant and efficient, with custom-designed naturally stained quarter oak flat-panel or white painted shaker cabinetry, engineered stone countertops and a marble backsplash. A kitchen island adds to the convenience, and select homes include a spacious walk-in pantry. Stainlesssteel appliances and under-cabinet lighting, contemporary halogen track lighting and task lighting round out the beautiful space. The luxurious master ensuite features an oversized soaker tub and a separate shower with glass enclosure and marble tile accents, complemented by marble countertops and a large vanity mirror. The main bathroom holds a bathtub with ceramic tile surround and marble countertops. “People love the little luxuries here,” says Lok. Homeowners at Sunstone have access to the private Sunstone Club, a 12,000-square-foot amenities building that includes an outdoor pool, gym, fireside lounge with a billiards table and much more. Sunstone Lake is right beside Lakeside, along with a playground, amphitheatre and several trails for walking or cycling. When you venture off the property, you’ll find schools, shopping, dining and recreation all nearby, including the Sungod Recreation Centre, Watershed Park and the Delta Nature Reserve. Homes at Lakeside start at $558,000. Growing your own garlic
C
By Mike Lascelle
onventional wisdom used to dictate that local growing conditions weren’t exactly ideal for raising garlic – given the wet winters, our often prolonged springs and cool summers. But local gardeners are a stubborn lot, and when it comes down to growing edibles, they don’t like to take no for an answer. Their reward for being obstinate, after a little trial and error, has been bountiful crops of locally grown Hardneck and Elephant garlic. So I thought I would provide you with a concise garlic growing primer based on local input. • Why you should grow your own garlic: although inexpensive, most store bought garlic is grown in China, where chemicals are used to whiten the skin (chlorine), reduce sprouting (growth inhibitors and irradiation) and kill pests in storage (pesticides banned in Canada). In other words, it is probably not too good for you. • When to plant garlic: the best planting time in coastal B.C. ranges from mid to late September through to early November. • What type of garlic should I plant: either a Hardneck garlic (Allium sativum var. ophioscorodon) or Elephant garlic (Allium ampeloprasum), which is not a true garlic, but a leek that produces huge bulbs up to 4-5” wide. Softnecks (Allium sativum var. sativum), like the common grocery store variety, tend to grow very poorly here. • Where should I plant my garlic: the planting site should have some winter sun, with light humus-rich soils that are neutral to slightly alkaline (add some dolomite lime if acidic). Raised beds or rows are ideal and soils can be amended with mushroom or steer manure (added a month before planting), compost or Sea Soil. Too much manure has been linked to garlic rust problems and soils enriched with excessive nitrogen produce thick luscious foliage but

small bulbs. • Planting your garlic: only plant larger individual cloves (eat the runts) and separate the bulb right at planting time, as they will root faster. Plant Hardneck garlic cloves 6-8” apart with rows 12” wide, while Elephant garlic should be planted 8-10” apart, with rows spaced 18”. Plant the cloves so that the tips are 1-2” below the soil (pointed upwards) and do not remove the skins. Be sure to add bonemeal at planting time and rotate the crop the following year if possible. • Fertilizing garlic: Make sure the soil you are planting in is moderately fertile by amending it. You should also fertilize in spring (from late March to early May, but not afterwards), with a foliar spray of fish or kelp, as this helps top growth which in turn produces bigger bulbs.
• Removing the flower scapes: both Hardneck and Elephant garlic will produce flower scapes, these should be cut off to prevent energy from being diverted from bulb production. They are edible and make a good pesto (1/2 pound chopped scapes, 1 cup virgin olive oil, 2 cups grated Asiago cheese) or stir-fry ingredient. • Harvesting: Garlic ripens from late July to early August in coastal B.C.. Do not water for two weeks before harvesting (helps curing) and gently dig when greens are 1/2 to 2/3 yellow. Brush off excess dirt and cure for seven to 10 days by laying a single layer in an area sheltered from rain and sun, then remove the roots and cut the Hardneck stems. • Growing garlic from seed: scapes left to mature do develop bulbils, which can be planted but take 2-3 years to produce a decent bulb.

Before buying compare space & water heating costs When you’re house-hunting, choosing a home with natural gas for space and water heating can save you money. Believe it at fortisbc.com/calculator. *These are approximate savings based on the difference between annual natural gas and electricity costs for space and water heating of a 2,300 square-foot house with average insulation and four occupants in the FortisBC Lower Mainland service area. Calculation compared high-efficiency natural gas furnace and large storage tank water heater with electric resistance heating (baseboards) and equivalent water heater and is based on FortisBC natural gas rates as of July 2014 ($11.054/GJ) and electricity rates in the service area identified (Tier 1 and 2: $0.079 and $0.118 per kWh). Try a taste on cycling farm tour
E
very August, the Slow Food Cycle Tour draws many people from near and far to Agassiz and Chilliwack. When my husband and I participated last year, in the Agassiz tour, we had so much fun that we decided to go again this year. It’s a family friendly bike tour along 25 kilometers of mostly flat and quiet rural roads. It’s a wonderful outing for the whole family, a great way to explore the beautiful countryside, and to meet some of the farmers that grow and produce food locally in the region. There’s quite a variety of farms that participate with the tour. There are great cheeses to sample and tasty, tender, juicy organic chicken, and you can see how a dairy farm is run. It’s pretty cool to bike right through the hazelnut orchard after sampling the flavoured hazelnuts. There are so many details to take in, including heavenly coffee made with the beans that are expertly roasted in an antique flame roaster. They also have lovely antiques and collectibles, chickens, garlic, and a beautiful garden. One farm grows pea shoots. I’ve had them stir fried before, but I really enjoyed the crisp tender pea shoots in a delicious salad. It was interesting, too, to see how they’re grown. At the UBC Dairy Research Centre, there was more interesting stuff to learn. Part of the fun of these events is meeting super nice people. It gives both farmers and city folk a chance to connect and for people to learn about the importance of supporting our local food growers. With the changing climate and weather patterns world-wide, and the worsening drought issues in California and other regions that produce much of the food that we eat, we may well
have start relying much more on our own region to feed ourselves. I was amazed at the number of young kids that I saw along the way. Some were even riding bikes with training wheels. It’s so awesome to give kids these kinds of experiences. The entire distance was probably too far for some of them, but it was obvious they were having a wonderful time and their parents were definitely giving them precious memories that will last a life-time. Pedaling their own bikes gives these kids the really empowering feeling of independence that they don’t get when strapped into a car seat. Many of their parents and grandparents still had the privilege to enjoy that important part of growing up as a kid. It’s also surprising how many kids have no clue these days where the food comes from
that they get on their plates every day and these kinds of tours are a valuable learning experience that no class room will provide. Every year, hundreds of people participate with these Slow Food Cycle Tours. Cycling Last year, Jackie Chow Tourism Harrison counted around 800 people for the Agassiz tour alone. Tours like these help promote local agriculture in the region and lead to more visits by tourists, as well as foodies the rest of the year too. Last year, the Golden Ears Community Coop and HUB organized our own little Bike to Farms tour in Maple Ridge. Even though our tour was on a way smaller scale, those who came along for the ride told us it was great fun. So we will be or-
ganizing our second Bike to Farms tour on Sunday Sept. 7, and we hope to grow the event this year. Participating this year will be Red Barn Plants and Produce, Brookfield Farm and Lorea McCready, who does an amazing job of feeding her family pretty much year-round with home grown vegetables. We can’t wait to include Golden Ears Cheese Crafters, again. Hopefully next year, once the planned multi-use path has been constructed along that section of 128th Ave., so that we can drop by for a visit safely. • To take part, e-mail jchow23708@yahoo.ca. An Exceptional Educational Experience KinderHeart offers children enrolled in the daycare program Montessori teachings at no extra cost! Why? We believe in offering exceptional educational experiences as these early opportunities are one of the most influential times in a child’s development. I started KinderHeart Montessori with the goal of offering a traditional Montessori program to children residing in Pitt Meadows. It was and is extremely important to stay true to my beliefs that the child comes first and quality early education is not the exception but the “norm.” KinderHeart Montessori was born with this belief and has organically grown and matured into the program it is today. We are proud and blessed to be reaching our 10th anniversary in 2015 and having touched and nurtured many souls in this community. KinderHeart now offers 2 preschool program locations in Pitt Meadows: Edith McDermott Elementary and Osprey Village. Both programs offer traditional Montessori teachings with trained Montessori Directress’s. In September we will also be expanding our opening and closing hours to reflect the needs of working parents.

ICBC seeks 5.2 per cent rate hike
people

Distracted driving cited as injury claims rise B y J eff Nagel Black Press
ICBC is asking regulators to approve a 5.2 per cent increase in basic auto insurance rates. The public auto insurer said the rate hike would cost the average customer an extra $40 per year if approved by the B.C. Utilities Commission. The rate hike is to take effect Nov. 1 on an interim basis while the BCUC reviews the application. A previously approved 5.2 per cent rate hike that took effect in 2013-14 means drivers will soon be paying 10.4 per cent more than they did in 2012 for basic coverage. ICBC blamed the latest increase on a continued rise in injury claims costs paid to crash victims for pain and suffering, future care and lost wages. Bodily injury claims hit $1.9 billion in 2013, up $73 million from 2012 and by more than $500 million from five years earlier. Legal and medical costs are also up. Drivers’ rapidly growing use of cellphones and other personal electronic devices behind the wheel is one of the factors ICBC cited for the rise in injury claims. Distracted driving is the second leading cause of fatal car crashes in B.C. – killing 88 people a year – and is the leading cause of rear-end crashes

that often cause injuries, spokesman Adam Grossman said. A new campaign against distracted driving is to roll out in September. Grossman was unable to provide details justifying why basic rates should be 10.4 per cent higher than 2012, when the injury claim cost increase from 2012 to 2013 was only four per cent. The full rate hike application is to be filed Friday. Consumers Association of Canada president Bruce Cran said it continues a pattern of steeper increases in basic rates, on which ICBC has a monopoly but more restraint on optional coverage rates where it must compete. He also took aim at the provincial government’s continued raiding of ICBC coffers for general revenue. The province has budgeted to pull $200 million from ICBC this year, $155 million next year and $125 million in 2016, down from $237 million in 2013 and $576 million in 2010. Cran said he doesn’t “give a damn” about ICBC and government claims the yearly dividends to the province come only from the optional side and don’t affect basic rates. “We see it a as one corporation,” he said. “As long as they’re stealing our money by the million by transferring it into government revenues, no matter which division they claim it from, we are being gouged as a public.” Cran called it a stealth tax on people who drive vehicles that is “absolutely disgraceful.”

The Maple Ridge Burrards got three more goals from Ben McIntosh in Victoria on Wednesday, but fell 9-4 to the Shamrocks in the fifth and deciding game of the WLA championship. The Burrards were shutout in the first period, then got two goals from McIntosh and another from Jarrett Davis in the second, but were outscored 4-1 in the third as Victoria advanced to the Mann Cup – the national senior men’s lacrosse championship. The Shamrocks went 4-8 on the power play in Game 5, while the Burrards were 0-4. McIntosh scored half of the Burrards’ goals in the series against Victoria, including nine of the team’s last 11. He had 14 goals in the five games, and led the WLA with 27 playoff goals total. Frankie Scigliano stopped 40 shots in Game 5 and a standout throughout the playoffs for the Burrards, who had advanced to the WLA final for the first time in 23 years.

ockey stars don’t always end up in the NHL.
Sometimes they change their focus entirely and transfer their athletic skills to another sport, in which they can dominate standings in top-ranked competitions. Ryan Hunt from Pitt Meadows fell into that category when he abandoned minor hockey, due to an injury, for golf. Shooting pucks transfered well into driving golf balls. “That’s why I generated a lot of power in my golf swing,” maintains Hunt. From the ages five to 15, Hunt was an avid hockey player, working his way through the minor divisions to bantam A1, playing right wing for the Ridge Meadows Rustlers. Four years later, he’s a scratch golfer and Canadian junior golf team athlete, having The 19-year-old Meadow Gardens Golf Club member now prefers golf to hockey because he is more in control of the end result. “It’s all up to you whether you do well or not.” Hunt continues to do well on the summer golf tournament circuit. Hunt played a big part in the successful match-play events against the teams from Scotland and the U.S., as Canada went 4-1-1. Hunt competed in the Nike Golf Junior Championship this week, and sat second on the Order of Merit on the Canadian Junior Golf Association for boys aged 15-19. The 10th annual Nike event ended Thursday at Carlisle Golf and Country Club in Richmond Hill, Ont. It brought together select junior golfers from across the
country. Hunt was tied for third after the third round, at plus-two, carding scores of 75, 77 and 74 – four strokes back of leader Andrew Russ of Oakville, Ont. Hunt is hopeful his recent success and ranking will catch the eye of NCAA golf team recruiters, as he would like to apply for post-secondary scholarships this fall. “We’ll see what happens. Benefits and drawbacks of cycling
C
ycling is a great fitness option and becoming more popular all the time, partly because it’s fun, partly because it’s an activity most of us have mastered at a fairly young age, its green and it is also relatively cheap. There are, of course, bikes that can cost as much as a good used car, but you can find inexpensive, reliable bikes around and the maintenance costs are minimal unless you are competing. Having said that, there are some hazards with cycling, the most obvious and potentially devastating are encounters with motor vehicles. But even though one might expect lower body injuries to be the most prevalent in an activity driven by the legs, the upper body is the most frequently injured. Of these injuries, one condition called ‘cyclists hand’ or ‘handlebar palsy’ can be very debilitating and painful. This syndrome is much less common than carpal tunnel syndrome, but both conditions can occur at the same time. The symptoms caused by these two conditions affect the hand in different locations. Of the three main nerves (radial, median and ulnar) that leave the neck and supply your arm, it is the ulnar nerve that is affected. This nerve travels from your neck down

MOODY
OLIVE (NEE MATHERS) Olive Moody, nee Mathers, the last surviving child of Straiton pioneers, Dave and Jessie Mathers passed away peacefully July 17 at the age of 92 after a short stay in Maple Ridge General Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Maurice Moody, her parents, and siblings Grace (Cliff MacKenzie), Charlie, Art (Eda), Bob, Don (Betty) and Jessie (Herm Keys). She leaves behind three sons, Donald (Donna) of Nanaimo and their family: Jason (Leslie) of Olds Alberta; Ryan (Erin) of Nanaimo, and Sigurlin (Glenn) of Nanoose; Douglas (Bonnie) of Walnut Grove and their family: Alanna, Ken and Paul; and Alan (Louise) of Maple Ridge and their family: Shawn, David (Lisa) and Sarah (Jody) all of the Fraser Valley; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and a large extended family. Olive was the middle girl in the family, born at home at “The Upper Store” in Kilgard/Straiton on September 19, 1921. The store was strategically placed close to Barrowtown where Sumas Lake was being reclaimed and the busy centre where the Sumas First Nation shared their land with the clay company and it’s company village. The family moved higher up the mountain to a larger property after the lake was drained. Olive grew up on the family farm (now Mathers Way), attending school at Straiton Elementary and Phillip Sheffield High School. All the Mathers were involved in the war effort – on the front lines, in essential industry or defending the home front. After WWII broke out, Olive worked first as an au pair for the family of an army colonel in Chemainus and later moved to New Westminster and worked on Annacis Island in a PBY coastal patrol plane repair factory. She worked as an expediter at the plant. It was here that Olive met many of her lifetime friends. Olive married Maurice Moody of Port Kells in 1947 and they lived in Maple Ridge for over fifty years. Maurice had served in the 13th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery and landed on Juno Beach on D Day. After the war he was actively involved in the Royal Canadian Legion. Olive proudly served as a Ladies Auxiliary member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Maple Ridge Branch for many years. She was also a volunteer for Maple Ridge Hospital store and as a wolf cub master (Akela) for many years. In 1958 she was instrumental in forming the1st Maple Ridge Cub Pack at Saint John The Divine Anglican Church. She went on to receive her Gilwell training certificate and was a member of the 31st Baden-Powell Guild in Maple Ridge. In the early years her main focus was being a stay at home wife and mother, raising three boys. The family was very close. Many weekends were spent visiting “up the hill” (Sumas Mountain) where invariably, card games would be played. She loved playing crib. Her mother had a tablecloth embroidered with all the sibling’s and spouse’s names so beginning the card game could be expedited. Everyone knew their seat! She loved family fishing trips to Loon Lake and camping. Olive and Maurice also made trips to the prairies visiting family and friends and one Alaska trip with Art and Eda Mathers. She enjoyed travelling. She and Maurice visited family in Europe on two trips overseas and with son, Don, visited the Netherlands and Belgium for the 60th anniversary of D-Day ceremonies. Her sense of humour was an enduring quality - always laughing, joking and smiling right up to the end. There was a sparkle of love in her eyes whenever family visited and on special days with her sons, their wives, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Many of her later years were spent at Willow Manor in Maple Ridge where she was known as the Wii bowling champion! Her support for family and friends touched hearts and brightened lives. There will be a memorial tea at Straiton Community Hall, 4698 Sumas Mountain Road in Abbotsford, on Friday, September 5th from 1 – 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Maple Ridge Hospital Foundation.
