and YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. There’s a FOOD CRISIS in 100 Mile House. The South Cariboo Food Security Committee has put out a plea for food donations to support the hungry families and individuals in need this summer. Local gardeners with extra produce in their plots, and the general public through non-perishable donations, are being asked to help with this food crisis. Buffalo Creek resident Marie Schulze, 18, has been awarded one of this year’s national Tim Hortons Scholarships. In the essay she wrote with her online application for the scholarship, Schulz says she chose to highlight how to best nurture good working relationships and mutual understanding between different generations, both working at and eating at Tim Hortons. “It’s exciting because first, I was the one to be chosen for it and I wrote this essay for it and, because I am not from here. I am from Germany. I came two or three years ago, so still, my English is sometimes struggling a little bit.” The Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School (PSO) 2014 graduate says she was thrilled and surprised the essay turned out so well and it pleased the national judges. Schulze adds she will use the $1,000 award for her expenses to attend the University of Victoria (UVic). Tim Hortons of 100 Mile House owner Steve McPhail says Schulze’s level of hospitality and professionalism is beyond reproach. “She’s wonderful. I actually just sat down with her and did a standard job evaluation for performance, and I couldn’t give her any feedback on any where to improve. “She’s truly one-of-akind and just a great kid. It was my privilege to have her as one of my staff.” McPhail notes the selection committee that chooses the scholarship recipients is

Lytton River Festival free
The Lytton River Festival organizers are excited about one of Canada’s top-ranked bands coming to town on Labour Day weekend, Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
Big numbers out for Men’s Club round
Much more than music, the three-day Lytton festival includes many other attractions and venues. Also new in 2014, the festival’s 11th year, is Circus West, a group of young performing artists from Vancouver. Their two onstage performances on Saturday are followed by short workshops where children, youth and adults are taught some basic performing skills. Five live bands per-
form on Friday and Saturday, a farmer’s market, vendors, children’s climbing wall, and children’s kayaking in the local swimming pool are all part of the fun. It’s difficult to choose a highlight but for many folks, the Sunday Pow Wow is the crowning activity. Drum groups and dancers perform and entertain and compete in colourful costumes. The best part? Everything is free!

Dozens of golfers went for the pin and long drives at a weekly 108 Men’s Club round on Aug. 21. Of the 65 participants at the 108 Golf Resort for the nine-hole game, John McNeil (36) and Shane Wilkie (36) shot lowest gross in the first flight, while Dean McNeil (33) and Jeff Kendy (34) shot lowest net scores in the first flight. In the second flight, it was Theo Wiering (36) and Larry Pinkney (40) with low gross, and Lean Van Drimmelen (32) and Greg Aiken (33) with best low-net scores. The third flight saw Rob Douglas (40) and Dan McCafferty (42) firing lowest gross, while Rick Lunsted (33) and Ron Tonts (35) fired lowest net. James Lace (45) and Bryant Hollins (47) were the lowest gross golfers in the fourth flight, while Al Smeds (35) and Peter Messner (36) put up lowest net numbers in the last flight. Deuces went to J. McNeil, Wiering, Bill Stokes, Garry Grosso and Lace. Bill Baerg got it closest to the pin on No. 10. Marty McClusky got it closest to the stick on No. 15. On No. 12, Al Kregosky got it closest. Tensouljers, a band that comprises three horn players, five vocalists, and the best rhythm section in the City of Vancouver, performs on Saturday night at the Lytton festival. Their musical excellence and incredible sound inspire their famously lively, energetic stage show. The band's chemistry is hugely apparent during performances and their repertoire is adapted to their audience.

New BC Early Years Centres opening the Provincial Office for the Early Years for this fiscal year as part of a $5.5-million investment over three years. This is great news for the CFEC, as it already has most of the abovementioned programs in place, so the extra funding will allow the management and staff to not only upgrade their programs, but also provide more services for families with children in the zero to six age group. The mobile bus option will be a dream come true for the CFEC personnel because reaching out to rural areas has always been on the radar. With some families coming in to the centre from the rural areas over the years, the CFEC staff has realized there are a lot of people who don’t have the option of coming to 100 Mile House to take advantage of programs for their children and their families. Parents and families in several South Cariboo communities will soon be able to connect to early learning, health and family services in one convenient location. The Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC) in 100 Mile House is one of 12 community organizations throughout the province that have been selected to host new BC Early Years Centres that will help support families with children up to the age of six. Each centre will offer a variety of programs, services and supports tailored to the needs of their community. These may include: • Parent drop-in programs, such as Parent-Child Mother Goose; • StrongStart BC programs; • Public-health clinics; • Advice and referrals from early-years professionals; • Parent education workshops; • Licensed child care for families; • Child-care resources and referral information; and • A mobile bus to provide outreach to families in rural communities. As was the case with the other sites, the CFEC was chosen by a cross-ministry selection panel that included representatives from the ministries of Children and Family Development, Education and Health, and are located in a diverse mix of urban, rural and Aboriginal communities. Each centre will receive $52,000 from

Schulze’s application was not only given the highest grade of three local applications, it also met the requirements to rate in the top 25 across Canada to receive the national scholarship, he explains. That does not happen every year, despite the fact an annual scholarship is given out locally. “Each store owner has the option of doing their own in-store program. So, that’s funded by myself. So, if you don’t have a winner in the national one, you have your in-store one. “Post-secondary education is so important to me, for these young kids who come to work for me, that I encourage them as my duty.” Schulze notes she was a Tim Hortons employee between May 2013 and summer 2014, and hopes to return for future summer jobs. “I loved working here – so that’s why I was so happy as well – because Steve [McPhail] is a great boss. And, I love everyone on the team.” While grades are not included in the Tim Hortons scholarship application, Schulze did graduate with honours at PSO in May, earning

bachelor of microbiology for three to four years, and then hopes to study medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Whether she is accept-
