HUNTING SEASON APPROACHES

Elk, cougar, mule deer affected by new regulations T R E VO R C R AW L E Y

Graham declares for civic election Nine-year Creston councillor makes move to Cranbrook, seeks city council seat BARRY COULTER

A long-time Creston councillor is making the move to Cranbrook, and seeking to make the move to Cranbrook city council as well. Wes Graham has been on Creston council for nine years — and is still a Creston councillor. But he is in the process of moving back to his home town of Cranbrook, and looking to continue his career in public service in this town, in the upcoming municipal election in November, 2015.

With autumn fast approaching, the provincial government is encouraging hunters to be aware of the latest changes to the regulations before the season opens. The latest regulation guide, complete with specific information for regions across the province, is out on the shelves, while a version with the most up-todate information also exists online. However, there are a few big changes hunters should be aware of this season, according to Tara Szkorupa, a senior wildlife biologist with the Fish and Wildlife Management

Branch based in Cranbrook. Among the major changes of note involve elk, cougar and mule deer species. For elk, there have been heavy restrictions put in place for antlerless — cow and calf — hunting opportunities in the south trench area stretching from Canal Flats to the U.S. border. “Those changes are to reduce the harvest on cow or calf elk because we had population decline by about 35 per cent over the last five years, so we’re trying to really minimize the harvest on the cow and calf elk,” said Szkorupa.

awareness through the things that we do like dragon boat festivals and races and things like that and other things we do in the community,” said Sandy Zeznik, a spokesperson for Abreast in the Rockies. “So if we ever do anything in the community—fundraisers, a barbecue or a golf tournament, the women’s show at St. Eugene this year—we always bring the foundation information with us.” While known for their prowess out on the water with the dragon boat racing at festivals across the province, Abreast in the Rockies also supports local projects at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. “We also do fundraising for breast cancer projects, we put money into the digital mammogram at the hospital,” Zeznik said. “We put money into the oncology department, we put money into sentinel nodes probe, which assess whether breast cancer has moved to the lymph nodes.” Abreast in the Rockies is active with the dragon-boat racing from February to September each year, and while the group is on the way to wrapping up the season, Zeznik said they’re always looking for new paddlers. “We also are always looking for breast cancer survivors who wish to paddle,” she said. “It’s a very physical thing, it has to do with camaraderie, it has to do with being physically fit, it has to do with just feeling great. “So we’re always looking for new paddlers.” For more information, or to get involved with Abreast in the Rockies, contact Zeznik at: szeznik@shaw.ca

Cranbrook: Sun City

Solar on the minds of coffee drinkers A r n e P e t rys h e n Townsman Staff

There were some questions about solar panels at the coffee with the Mayor in July. One of the questions centred around solar panel electrical vehicle charging stations. Jay Armstrong,

Cranbrook’s Energy Manager noted that it is possible, but it’s currently more cost-effective to use grid-power in B.C. “Off-grid or weakgrid locations where adding or upgrading power lines and transformers would be cost

prohibitive would increase solar viability,” Armstrong wrote in the report. “In addition, many utilities are moving to time-of-use pricing, in which peak hours of morning, midday, and dinner-time see rate surcharges such pricing structures

Graham seeks election to Cranbrook Council Continued from page 1 “I’ve always enjoyed Council,” he said. “It would be great to come back to Cranbrook and serve in the community I was raised in.” Graham says he will focus on the issues of infrastructure, health care and safety, recreation and economic opportunities. “These are the factors that people look at when moving to a community.” “I’m bringing nine years of previous council experience, as well as a commitment to focus on the roads in Cranbrook,” he said. “And I want to look at the possibility of an overpass over the railroad tracks.” “I want to work with local doctors to make

sure we have enough in this community.” Graham sees the potential in local recreation to increase the number of visitors and enhance the quality of life for residents. “And I see great opportunities in terms of recreation. There’s great golf, great biking in the Community Forest.” As well as his Creston council experience, Graham’s resume in public service includes five years on the board of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. He is also Past-President and a lifetime member of the Association of Kootenay-Boundary Local Governments (AKBLG).

Graham was also a candidate in the 2011 contest for the Kootenay-Columbia Conservative Party candidate to replace outgoing MP Jim Abbott. David Wilks eventually won that position. “My website will be going online soon, with more information about who I am and what I can offer the citizens of Cranbrook,” Graham said. The British Columbia municipal elections are set for November 15, 2014. As of press time, so far Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski has announced he will be seeking re-election. Long-time City employee James Elliott has also declared his candidacy for City council.

are not likely in the near term in B.C.” He gave an example that those rates may be up to two to five times higher than B.C., and therefore significantly increase cost viability. In addition to solar generation, in some instances, excess vehicle battery capacity is even reversed to power the grid, so as to receive maximum time-of-use

profit. Armstrong also noted that electricity in Alberta is more expensive, and significantly more greenhouse-gas intensive than in BC, which may make a project around solar panels in the Public Works yard more viable. “Evolutions of solar technology combined with decreasing costs may begin to increase

project viability and outweigh complexity and maintenance concerns in the next few years,” he wrote. “Regardless, there are significant energy conservation opportunities throughout the city which have higher payback.” He said that accomplishes more for each taxpayer dollar and follows energy manage-

ment practices of reducing need first, and allows time for prices of early adopter technology such as solar to become more affordable. He said the first phase of the Kimberley Sun-Mine should prove interesting and relevant, since it will be using top-of-the-line dual-axis tracking solar panels to maximize energy reception.

Annual Labour Day picnic Monday in Rotary Park Continued from page 1 Labour Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September since the 1880s. “It’s about getting the families together on La-

bour Day,” she said. “Because it was the labour unions that brought Labour Day into being.” This will be the 13th

annual picnic. “We usually just have kids games and stuff but this year we were able to secure the bouncy castle and the bouncy wall,” she said. “So it’s a little

bit more elaborate this year.” Balfour is also the president of the Cranbrook and District Teachers’ Association. She said she was not

surprised by the meeting on Wednesday between the government and B.C. Teachers’ Federation, with mediator Vince Ready in the middle.

“I’m excited that they are speaking again today (Thursday) with Mr. Ready,” Balfour said. “I’m frustrated that government is talking about a cooling off period. We

actually don’t need a cooling off period, we need to get rolling on this. We’ve been cooling off all summer, let’s get the deal done by Tuesday.”

New hunting regulation changes affect elk, cougar and mule deer Continued from page 1 “There’s some very limited antlerless and there’s some very limited general open seasons on private land, but most of the hunting will be through limited entry hunt (LEH) for this year.” However, in light of the restrictions, there are still a few hunting opportunities available, she added. “We did extend the bow season for antlerless elk and the intent for that was to continue to provide hunting opportunities while minimizing harvest,” Szkorupa said. While antlerless elk have restrictions, there is a spike bull season in the south trench.

“This is something that we’ve had for a while to still have hunting opportunity, but when the harvest is focused on the male population, it doesn’t have as much impact on population trend,” Szkorupa said. “So we’re still maintaining that spike bull season so if people are looking for an opportunity for elk hunting, that’s still a good option for people in the trench.” Mule deer are also facing restrictions, as any buck season is being replaced with a fourpoint buck season that will end on Nov. 10th. The change comes after meeting with hunters

around the region to create a mule deer management plan. “There was some concerns from some people about low buck ratios in some areas, so that was the main reason for switching the season for mule deer,” said Szkorupa. Overall, the regional mule deer population is in decline, and biologists haven’t figured out why. “It’s different in different areas, but overall, populations are down from a year ago. We’re actually just about to start on a big research project, putting radio collars out on mule deer and trying to understand the reasons be-

hind the decline,” she said. “So that’s going to be a big priority for us over the next few years because there has been some pretty dramatic declines in the populations and we’re not sure how much of that is due to habitat or predation or other factors.” While there are changes to the mule deer season, it’s business as usual for whitetail season. Szkorupa added that biologists are keeping an eye on the whitetail deer population. “We had a spike in the female harvest in 2012 when we made some changes to the bag limit. But in 2013, that appeared to drop off, so we’re within our target harvest right now for whitetail, so we decided to maintain the seasons as they are right now,” Szkorupa said. “But it is something we’re monitoring and we’re going to be working on this management statement and trying to really articulate what our objectives are for whitetail deer and we’ll be reassessing the seasons in a

Mediator holds meeting that could determine course of teachers’ strike Steven Chua Canadian Press

RICHMOND, B.C. — A veteran labour mediator waded into a bitter dispute between the British Columbia government and its teachers Thursday, meeting with both sides in what could be the most significant development in a strike

that is threatening to derail the start of the school year. Vince Ready, who has helped bring an end to a number of high-profile labour disputes in the province, described the meeting as ``exploratory’’ as he assesses whether the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C.

said. “…But we’re still maintaining a female quota in some areas that have a high hunting pressure. In the areas that do have a lot of hunters and a lot of interesting cougar hunting, we are maintaining more restrictive seasons to ensure that we don’t over harvest cougars in those areas.” Szkorupa adds that along with hunting changes, there have also

Public School Employers’ Association, which bargains on behalf of the government, are close enough to begin formal mediation. Teachers have been on strike since mid-June, though negotiations were largely stalled over the summer break, making a delayed start to the school year increasingly likely. Ready acknowledged he was walking into a very difficult situation. “Last time I met them, they were a long ways apart,’’ Ready said as he arrived at a hotel in Richmond, south of Vancouver. The gathering follows a proposal from the province’s education minister, who asked the teachers’ union and the employer a day earlier to enter into mediation, put

aside one of the most contentious issues in the dispute, and agree not to stage strikes or lockouts for two weeks. Peter Cameron, the employers’ lead negotiator, said the education minister’s proposal wasn’t a prerequisite for mediation. Union president Jim Iker did not comment as he arrived for Thursday’s meeting. Iker has yet to say whether the federation is prepared to put the strike on hold and allow teachers to return to the classroom next week, though he has said such a move would likely require a vote from union members. Education Minister Peter Fassbender issued a statement earlier on Thursday asking the union to put the proposal to teachers.

Brokop’s business back on the road Country star on tour, hits Cranbrook Sept. 4

Bar ry Co ulter

Country star Lisa Brokop has spent practically her entire life in music. Originally from Surrey, B.C., she was on-stage with her musical family at age 7. By 15, she was performing professionally in Vancouver, and her debut Canadian album appeared in 1991, when she was only 17. Her first major record deal was made 20 years ago — and Brokop is celebrating that 20-year mark on her “minitour” through Western Canada, which lands in Cranbrook Thursday, Sept. 4. This week Brokop spoke to the Townsman from her home in Nashville, Tennessee, prior to hitting the road to Canada. “I can’t wait. I’m packing my sweaters, my warm fuzzy socks — I know it’s not that cold up there, but compared to here …” A twenty year celebration — but who’s counting, right? “It’s actually been a little more than that,” Brokop said, “but officially 20 years of having record deals and being on the radio in North America. I can’t believe it, that 20 years has gone by.” It’s seven albums and a string of hit singles later, which Brokop is looking forward to rolling out in her B.C. shows. “I’m starting out in Chilliwack, which is near my hometown of Surrey, and I’m planning on doing some of the old songs that got me started in the business, that I hope people will recognize. And of course some new ones that I’ve just had out recently, some in-betweeners, some stuff that I like to do.” The shows themselves will be of an upclose and personal nature. Two Calgary musicians — Darcy Johnstone and John Thiel — will be joining Brokop in Canada, to make for an intimate evening. “It will be bass, guitar and me on acoustic. It’s going to really simple, so I can tell stories about the songs, talk to

the people so they can hear the words and really make it an intimate setting.” With a career like hers, Brokop is no stranger to the touring life on the road. She explains how it’s changed for her over the years. “Back in the early days, when those 20 years were first starting, I was on the road a lot. I was much younger. My first record deal was Capital Records, I was signed to them and was having some success with a couple of singles, so there was a lot of stuff going on. There was a three month period where we did 80 or 90 dates, it was just ridiculous. And all over the place, jumping all over the country. There was never a straight line or proper routing. “But that was the way it was then. But now, part of it is the business has changed a little bit. There’s not quite as much to-do — no matter what level you’re at. I also have a family now. I have a little girl who just turned five. So I have to coordinate a little bit differently.” One thing that hasn’t changed is the charge she gets as a performer, in front of and interacting with an audience. “It’s the key,” Brokop said. “It’s what got us into music, it’s what keeps us going, that magical thing when you sing a song and people respond, and you know that they like it, there’s nothing better.” As soon as she graduated from high school, Brokop moved to Nashville to further her music career. “Nashville is an artists’ community for sure. My husband’s downstairs right now writing with a co-writer. That’s a standard thing around here (Brokop and her husband Paul Jefferson also record and perform as a duo — The Jeffersons). “Nashville is a writing mecca,” Brokop said. “I always say if you’re a new writer that wants to be a songwriter in the music business — even if it’s not Country, necessarily — if you

want to write in whatever genre, this is the place to be. This is where you hone your chops. It’s awesome. It’s a normal thing, to be writing.” Brokop’s latest album release (“Beautiful Tragedy”) was in 2008. She was in the studio this year cutting some tracks, and some new singles were released, but a planned new album has been delayed somewhat, she said. “But I will be doing the new songs when I come through on this tour. “And I’ve got a bit of a new idea, which I’m going to tell everyone about — it has to do with coming full circle, in a way. When I first started out, I would sit in with other musicians and bands, and I would sing traditional Country music — things like Pasty Cline, Tammy Wynette … I’ve been wanting to combine more of that in my show, possibly in a recorded project. I’m calling it at this point the Patsy Cline project. So I’m going to do some of those songs as well in the show, and talk to the people about it.” Brokop takes the stage the Key City Theatre on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 7:30 p.m. She is asked if she has any message for the people

Lisa Brokop will be in Cranbrook Thursday, Sept. 4 of Cranbrook prior to her arrival. “I want to say that I’m very excited. I haven’t been to Cranbrook in many, many years, probably at least 15 years. It looks like it’s a beautiful little theatre, so I’m excited to play there. And I hope we have a lot of fun. Come out and see it.”

Learning to ask the right questions In my column last week, I suggested that asking questions is a good way of learning, and especially for Christians. This week, I want to refine it a bit by suggesting that Christian faith is not so much about getting the right answer as it is about learning to ask the right questions. One of the truisms of life is that “the questions you ask will determine the answers you get”— so it’s important to learn to ask the right questions. People of faith are people on a life–long journey, seeking to grow into the fullness of our humanity, searching for the way of compassion and faithfulness. The metaphor of a journey is helpful. A journey has two elements: the destination, and the manner of journeying. Firstly, on a journey, we are on our way towards a destination. Sometimes, the destination is easy to define. If we decide to go to Vancouver, we get out a map (or plug in our GPS), plot our course, and begin driving until we get there. The road signs along the way help us see how close we’re getting to our destination. Other times, the destination is not quite so easy to define. In the life of faith, the only clear thing for me is that our goal is to live a life marked by compassion and faithfulness, hope and peace. But the precise shape of that life remains unclear. In fact, our destination is largely shaped by the way in which we make our journey. This second element of a journey is a vastly important thing. To use the same example, we could rush to Vancouver to get there as quickly as possible and miss everything in between in our urgency to

get there. If we’re lucky, we won’t be fined for speeding. The other option is to take a little longer on the trip, enjoy the sights, make sure we eat well, and arrive a little less tired and stressed out. If that’s important on a road trip, it is absolutely critical in our journey through life. As we journey in the company of other faithful men and women, each of us is responsible to shape our own journey. But we are never alone. We journey with other people, as well as with all the creatures of earth. For me, both the goal of life and the way we journey through life ought to be Rev. Yme marked by compassion and Woensdregt hope, gentleness and peace. Flexibility and tolerance are strong virtues for me. Trees look strong compared with the wild reeds in the field. But when the storm comes the trees are uprooted, whereas the wild reeds, while moved back and forth by the wind, remain rooted and are standing up again when the storm has calmed down. Flexibility is a great virtue. When we cling to our own positions and are not willing to let our hearts be moved back and forth a little by the ideas or actions of others, we may easily be broken. Being like wild reeds does not mean being wishy– washy. It means moving a little with the winds of the time while remaining solidly anchored in the ground. That applies to all areas of life. I am deeply rooted in the Christian faith. I have learned to trust that rootedness. But that does not lead me to believe that my way is the only way. I know God to be much largLETTERS TO THE EDITOR

er than what I or any other human being can conceive. We can understand God in many different ways. And while the way of following Christ is the path to which I have been called, I can also learn from other ways of understanding God. For me, truth is not divided. It all points to the reality at the heart of life. I know that some people disagree strongly with me. Many have said that I’m not a true Christian. Nevertheless, I continue to believe that learning to ask the right questions is part of our journey of faithfulness. I have learned so much from people who follow other traditions. I have learned to ask deeper questions, and have grown as I have explored those ways with them. My hope is that the flexible approach which I am learning to embody becomes attractive to more of us. God knows, the world is in a sorry state. There are so many things that keep us apart, so many excuses we can use for being hostile with each other. The Church is guilty of having fostered hatred against those who have disagreed and other faiths again and again. That’s a terrible thing to have done, and I mourn the church’s history deeply. It’s time to try to live together in hope and peace, so that in our common humanity, Christ can be honoured. That’s the journey I want to make. Along the way, I am slowly learning to ask the right questions. I am learning to talk with others— not so I can change their minds, but so that I might understand them, and be understood by them. Opinion/features

Michael Hasting’s fearless career Mike Selby

“Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue” is the last statement anyone wants to hear from a control tower employee trying to prevent an airline disaster, which is why it was so funny when it first appeared in the 1980 film ‘Airplane.’ More recently it became a favourite catchphrase of journalist Michael Hastings, who could be heard saying it to himself whenever he was in great danger. And Michael Hastings was in great danger a lot. Hastings found his calling at an early age, writing for and spearheading many school newspapers and college magazines. In 2002 he became an unpaid intern for Newsweek (his diary of that time has just been published in the hilarious book ‘The Last Magazine’). All along he had his sights on being a war correspondent, and pestered Newsweek to send him to Iraq. It took a long time, but Newsweek finally relented and sent Hastings to Baghdad in 2005 (relented may be a bit harsh — Hasting was one of the brightest and hardest working interns they had ever seen). Never one to hang back, Hastings simply walked into the front lines, weaving in and out the highly dangerous war zones. He was sending back dispatches none of the senior reporters were getting, causing them to admire and resent the young reporter. Finally living

his dream, he told his girlfriend (Andi Parhamovich) back home about the adrenaline-rush of reporting combat combined with the horror and sadness of war. She soon followed him over, accepting a job with Baghdad’s National Democratic Institute — where she would teach classes on democracy to the locals. On January 18 of 2007, Parhamovich was returning from a lecture when Sunni insurgents ambushed her and UN guard escort, executing all of them. Hastings returned to the States to bury his girlfriend, and to set up The Andi Foundation, which would provide financial aide to students. ‘I Lost My Love In Baghdad’ was published the following year, Hastings’ first book. Deeply affected by his girlfriend’s death, Hastings nonetheless returned to the battlefield. In 2010 Rolling Stone Magazine sent him to Afghanistan, where once again Hastings ignored any signs of danger, crossing enemy lines to interview one of Kandahar’s most ruthless warlords. Not completely un-self-aware, his dispatches always included the recklessness and stupidity of his actions. “I know it’s a risk,” he would write. “I know it’s not a healthy lifestyle. I know it’s a addiction. I know it is the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.” It was during this time that Hastings interviewed General Stanley McChrystal, causing

Michael Hastings President Obama to relieve McChrystal of his command over the remarks he made to Hastings. Although debate erupted over whether McChrystal and his staff thought they speaking off the record, Hastings was thrust into the national spotlight, winning the prestigious Polk Award. He expanded these articles into the 2012 book ‘The Operators.’ After this he finally focused his efforts stateside, reporting more on domestic political matters. He began an in-depth profile of CIA director John Brennan for Rolling Stone. But friends and family began to notice something wasn’t quite right with Hastings. He appeared to be frequently agitated, manic, and paranoid. He told them felt he was being followed and spied on. He began to drink heavily, and abuse the drug Adderall. He was also convinced someone was tamper-

ing with his car. Hastings was killed on June 18 last year, when his Mercedes slammed into a palm tree and exploded. High rates of speed, which were caught on camera, was the official cause of death, with the police finding zero evidence of foul play. Sadly, a single car accident combined with Hastings’ paranoia before he died was the perfect mix for various conspiracy theories to arise. That he was researching the director of the CIA before he died was almost too perfect for the “man who knew too much” assassination theory. What isn’t taken into account or disregarded is the fact that Hastings was suffering and seeking treatment for PTSD. Or that he had crashed cars into trees at high speeds while intoxicated three times previously. None of this matters though. What does matter is that one of the bravest and brightest reporters lost his life last year, at the young age of 33. He was awarded the Norman Mailer Prize for Distinguished Journalism posthumously. In the words of his editor, he left behind “a body of work, truly significant and memorable work, that seems impossible for someone so young.” Mike Selby is Reference Libarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

Full of complaint? Escape to the country

“In an underdeveloped country don’t drink the water. In a developed country don’t breathe the air.” Jonathan Raban. “Very little is known about the Canadian countryside since it is rarely visited by anyone but the Queen and illiterate sport fishermen.” P.J. O’Rourke It will likely be a surprise to most of my readers but, on occasion, my brain starts to work and when this momentous event last took place, I found myself remembering driving a car across the U.S. of A. What had struck my beloved and me was the vastness of the place, the great stretches of unchanging scenery and, a surprise to both of us, the pleasantness of the Americans that we encountered. These locals were quite unlike the types we’d met in Europe. They were affable, quietly spoken and not at all boastful about being American. We had brought no camping gear so we had to stay in small roadside motels and eat in local cafes. It was a surprisingly pleasant experience. We’d started in Detroit, skirted the Great Lakes, but avoided Chicago; we travelled the countryside. The point of my maundering on like this is that a certain Ms Holly Chabowski and her friend, who stole some news headlines — and went viral — recently, should

Friday, august 29, 2014

have made a trip like ours when they visited Canada. They whimpered that they’d found ‘the cities of Toronto, Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa and Halifax to be dirty, noisy, with the smog of exhaust pipes and the honking of horns’. Well! The two women made a huge mistake; they insisted on visiting cities. I, personally, spent a whole year in Toronto one Wednesday. Ms Chabowski and her friend came from Denmark which, apparently, is somewhere in Europe. I must have missed it in my travels because it is, I am informed, a flat peninsular (sticky out bit) and a few islands, almost attached to Norway and sitting on top of Germany. The locals almost Peter certainly speak foreign. Warland We here in Canada have parks bigger than Denmark which, I am assured, is so small that, with a brisk Westerly wind blowing up the English Channel, a person can spit right across it. I am told that the lady’s letter complained that Canadians rely far too much on motor vehicles. She appeared to be quite surprised to see Canadians in cars. However, I did read an advertisement on the internet that stated ‘Bring your car to Denmark’. This is probably because they don’t have any of their own there. Well, Holly! Canada isn’t about cities which, in my humble opinion, have always been the blights on any nation. Personally,

I’ve always been delighted to flee from cities that airlines have imposed on me. I couldn’t wait to get out into the countryside where I could meet some genuine local people, not city dwellers. In the small town outside London, where my parents struggled to bring me up, the sidewalks (pavement) are now blocked by parked cars and nobody can walk. Paris is a honking bedlam, Istanbul a mental home for deranged drivers, and Rome untenable. I’ll leave Bangkok out of it: ten lanes of traffic all aimed deliberately at any daring pedestrian. The fact is, I have always been happy – delirious even — to fly home into Western Canada, climb into my car and drive almost unimpeded home to the Kootenays. However, if I’ve been forced to land in Calgary, I’ve always avoided travelling home via the traffic jammed plague called Banff. No, Miss Chabowski and her friend should revisit Canada someday soon and, after escaping the chaos of the airport and the nearby adjacent metropolis, hie themselves to the provinces, the prairies, the mountains of the west, the territories, the Yukon and possibly the arctic islands. There they’ll almost be sure not to become embroiled in too many traffic jams. There they might even meet genuine Canadians and then stop whimpering. Of course automobiles are a necessity in Canada. After all, we’re known worldwide — even in Denmark — for the initials R.C.M.P: Royal Canadian Mounted Pedestrians.

Plenty of healthy competition in the crease at Ice camp Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

Goaltender Wyatt Hoflin stretches out to make a toe save on forward Austin Wellsby during a morning session Thursday at Kootenay Ice training camp. Sessions continue today at Western Financial Place.

Two down, three to go Ice camp through Day 2; Black & White Game slated for Sunday Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

With the first two days in the books, every player at Kootenay Ice training camp has now seen the ice in a game situation. The prospects fired things up Wednesday but it was the veteran players that really turned up the pace of play Thursday. “Day two was equally as good as day one,” assistant coach Jay Henderson said Thursday night. “The young guys fit in very well and with the older guys, it was obviously a little bit quicker pace. It was physical and a good second day overall.” Thursday evening provided fans with the first opportunity to get a look at Alexander Chirva. The Moscow native spent the 2013-14 season with the Moose Jaw Warriors, registering two goals and six points in 58 games. Chriva joins the Ice after the team selected

him with the 33rd overall pick in the 2014 CHL Import Draft. The shifty Russian showed glimpses of potential, but was relatively quiet through the evening affair. “He has some skill,” Henderson said of the 18-year-old Russian. “He skates very well. Moving forward and getting into exhibition, we’d like to see him be a little bit hungrier and physical. But that will come.” The blueline is quickly become host to curious storylines that should only deepen as camp wears on and eventually transitions into the exhibition season. First it was the relatively unexpected absence of two 20-year-old defencemen, Landon Cross and Landon Peel. Now, the spotlight shifts to the other end of the age spectrum and 15-year-old Cale Fleury. The younger brother of Carolina Hurricanes first round pick Haydn Fleury is entering his

16-year-old year of major junior, but won’t celebrate his “Sweet 16” until Nov. 19. “He doesn’t play like a 16-year-old,” Henderson said of the younger Fleury. “He’s very composed and he makes good decisions. He’s hard to play against. “I’m very thrilled with him so far and we expect more out of him, for sure.” Training camp continues today, when Team Blue faces Team White at 11 a.m. Team Blue gets a double dose of pain as they return to the ice at 6 p.m. to take on Team Black in the evening scrimmage. The festivities get underway early Saturday morning as Team White goes head-to-head with Team Black at 9 a.m. The final scrimmage of the weekend goes at 2:30 p.m. when Team Blue plays Team White. Kootenay Ice training camp culminates, as it does every year, with the Black & White Intrasquad Game Sunday

Dressler returns to Roughriders C anadian Press

REGINA — Weston Dressler is back with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The veteran slotback re-signed with the CFL club Wednesday after passing his physical. Dressler was released by

the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday and cleared NFL waivers the following day, making him an unrestricted CFL free

at noon. All proceeds from the gate go towards the Cranbrook and Kimberley United Way. Fans are encouraged to bring a minimum donation of $5 for entry. With camp closing out just as quickly as it started, these next few days could be the last opportunity for some players to prove they deserve a chance to get into exhibition play and extend their time in Cranbrook. “The biggest thing is the compete. Obviously you want to see the physical play,” Henderson said. “These guys have been on the ice quite a bit, so they’re a little bit tired. Overall, we want the compete and we want guys to stand out. “It’s different when you play against other teams and the competition picks up. Moving forward, we’re talking about a lot of guys right now but the exhibition season will tell us a lot more.” agent. The Ottawa Redblacks also made a formal contract offer to Dressler, and the Calgary Stampeders were reportedly in the mix for his services.

Though Mackenzie Skapski could still return to Cranbrook, there remains serious competition in the crease at Kootenay Ice training camp this week. Wyatt Hoflin, the only returning netminder at camp, has shown no signs of regression from last season and looks calm and collected in the blue paint. That comes as surprise to no one. “When [Hoflin] was able to step in again in the playoffs, he didn’t look out of place. He didn’t really blink,” said goaltending coach Mike Bergren. “He went with it, he knew he was ready to go and he proved that. That was refreshing to see for us because we know he is a guy we feel comfortable handing the ball to. “That’s not to say he doesn’t have to earn it. But obviously as the incumbent it’s his job to lose.” Bergren will run the second of two goaltender-specific sessions today at Ice camp. While game situations are an important evaluation tool for staff, individualized skill sessions are equally as important for goaltenders as they are for skaters. Wednesday’s session focused on dealing with pucks out of the slot. Today, Bergren is going to put the goalies through drills that will get them moving off their posts, fighting to track loose pucks and roaming around handling the puck. “You have to be able to cater to both guys or in this case, all six guys in camp,” Bergren said. “The last two years I’ve been fortunate enough to have Wyatt [Hoflin] and Mackenzie [Skapski], two guys that do different things well.

“Part of [my role] is highlighting those things they do well and also helping to make some of the things that they don’t do as well, better.” The most intriguing part of the Kootenay Ice crease war comes in the form of the five other goaltenders batting away black rubber discs through screens, deflections and heavy contact. While Calum Humble’s bright yellow gear shouts at those in the stands and Jakob Walter’s status as a second round pick from the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft speaks volumes, the reality for these two puckstoppers is simple: they won’t be in Cranbrook this season. As 15-year-olds, the two goaltenders are here for a taste of major junior hockey in hopes they can elevate their game and make the jump somewhere further down the road. Doing quick and simple math will reveal three goaltenders remaining and only one spot available behind the incumbent Hoflin. Enter Jayden Sittler and Keelan Williams. The two 18-year-old puckstoppers have literally risen above the others in the early stages of camp as they vie for playing time behind Hoflin. At 6-feet tall, Sittler is an imposing presence between the pipes at one end of the rink. Then you turn your head to the opposing net to see Williams, who at 6-foot-2, stands well clear of any other netminder in camp. “You just have to focus on your own game,” Williams said Thursday night. “If you get distracted by what the other guys are doing, you kind of lose sight of what you want to do yourself. “I just have to focus

on myself, my game and be confident in my abilities.” Declan Hobbs is the youngest of the three, having just turned 16 on Aug. 19. That isn’t to say the Saskatoon native has gone unnoticed. “It’s healthy competition right now,” said assistant coach Jay Henderson Thursday night. “Obviously Sittler has played well. Williams has shown very well, he’s a big body. And Declan Hobbs has played well [as a] younger kid. “Moving into exhibition season they’ll get a lot more time and that’s when they’ll be able to stand out or show their weaknesses.” Sittler brings something unique to the table in that he has seen action in one game with the Ice. The Red Deer native dressed last season and found crease time in his hometown when the Ice lined up against the Rebels. “Maybe a little bit,” Sittler said of his experience giving him an edge on some of the less experienced goaltenders. “But I’m just thinking it’s all about hard work, dedication and seizing your opportunities. “Anyone can take that spot.” As much as physical size and filling the net go a long way, there certainly is more to it in the eyes of Bergren and he expects each goaltender to show their individual strengths as camp winds down. “I’d like to see [the guys] show a measure of consistency [over the last few days of camp],” Bergren said. “It’s hard to go into the season with a question mark in net and you want to see those guys really take over and show they’re really ready to run with the ball.”

The Riders released the 29-year-old Dressler in January so he could explore his options south of the border. The 5-foot-8, 179pound native of Bismarck, N.D., spent his

entire six-year CFL career with Saskatchewan, registering 442 catches for 6,531 yards and 43 TDs. He surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving plateau five times, including the last four years.

Dressler had five catches for a game-high 81 yards and a TD in Saskatchewan’s 45-23 Grey Cup victory over Hamilton last November at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium.

ICBC warns Labour Day long weekend is one of the most dangerous on B.C. roads Every year over the Labour Day long weekend, an average of four people are killed and 560 injured in 1,900 crashes across the province.* Driver distractions, speed and impaired driving are the top contributing factors in Labour Day long weekend casualty crashes.**

Tips: Pre-trip check: Make sure any camping or outdoor equipment is securely tied down to your vehicle before you take off. Check your engine oil, coolant levels and lights, and inspect your vehicle tires, including the spare, to make sure they’re in good condition and properly inflated. Pack an emergency kit. 70 per cent of those surveyed keep an emergency kit in their vehicle. Follow their lead and pack yours with essentials such as food and water, a flashlight, first aid kit, booster cable and emergency signal cone. Assign a designated texter: If you need to keep in touch with family or friends during the drive, ask your passengers to make or receive calls and texts for you. If you have to take a call, pull over when it’s safe to do so or use your phone in hands-free mode. If you know someone is behind the wheel, avoid texting, calling or answering to help keep them safe. RVs: You’ll likely spot many recreational vehicles on the highways this weekend. If you’re driving in mountainous areas, you may find that many RV’s are driving below the speed limit because they may be underpowered and overloaded. Be patient with these

As many of us are planning one last summer road trip this long weekend, ICBC is urging drivers to be well prepared and leave plenty of time to get to your destination to avoid rushing and the temptation to drive aggressively. In a recent ICBC survey, 25 per cent of respondents’ main safety concern on a road trip was other drivers being aggressive, followed by traffic (18 per cent), road conditions (14 per cent), getting into a crash (10 per cent) and speeding drivers (8 per cent).

PLEASE BE SAFE “We want everyone heading out of town for the last long weekend of summer to make it home safely,” said John Dickinson, ICBC’s director of road safety. “Plan your route before you begin driving so you stay focused on the road. There will be many RVs and motorcyclists on our roads this weekend so keep your full attention on driving and help keep everyone safe.” drivers as they are likely going uphill as fast as they can. If you’re driving your RV this weekend, be courteous and pull over to let others by if you’re holding up traffic. This is much safer than a driver making an unsafe pass out of frustration.

Stay alert: 61 per cent of survey respondents said they feel tired at least sometimes when driving long distances. Get plenty of rest, stay hydrated and take rest breaks every 1.5 to 2 hours to avoid driver fatigue. Fatigue slows your reaction time

NEWS Canada tops in key measures of scientific literacy C ANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO — Canada ranks higher than 10 other developed nations

in scientific literacy, or the ability of citizens to read and fully comprehend a lengthy article

about science in a newspaper, according to a report released Thursday by the Council of Cana-

was last at about five per cent, it said. The findings are based on a 2013 survey of 2,000 Canadians and an assessment of relevant international data, according to the authors. The data was not all conducted at the same

THE SHOCKINGLY NEW COROLLA

Multiple sources throughout the Prairies have reported sightings of a Corolla unlike any seen before. With styling and capabilities unheard of in previous models — including a completely redesigned exterior and interior, standard LED headlamps, available backup camera, and CVTi-S transmission with paddle shifters — the new Corolla is definitely out of this world.

time. The data on Japan was collected in 2001, the European data in 2005, and as science literacy has been increasing generally all over the world in the past decade, these rankings may not be perfect, said Arthur Carty, chair of an expert panel involved in the report and executive director of the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology. The survey measured Canadians’ attitudes towards science and tested their knowledge with simple trueor-false questions, such as “electrons are smaller than atoms” (answer: true). The report — Science Culture: Where Canada Stands — is the most comprehensive look at public scientific engagement, attitudes and knowledge since 1989, its authors said. In the past 25 years, Canadians have become more knowledgeable and engaged on scientific issues, though fewer people believe science holds the key to

radically solving social problems, the report said. Ninety-three per cent of Canadians polled said they have an interest in “new scientific discoveries,” ranking first among 35 nations, it said. A third of respondents reported visiting a science or technology museum in the past year, and almost a quarter said they had signed petitions or joined street demonstrations on scientific issues such as oil pipelines, nuclear power or biotechnology. The survey also found interest in science was more prevalent among younger, wealthier and well-educated respondents, and higher among men than women. In the survey, EKOS Research polled 2,000 Canadians via landline, mobile or online response. EKOS says it has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points 19 times in 20.

Wind and ice move ‘sailing rocks’ across Death Valley ASSOCIATED PRESS

DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — For years scientists have theorized about how large rocks — some weighing hundreds of pounds — zigzag across Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park, leaving long trails etched in the earth. Now two researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, have photographed these “sailing rocks” being blown by light winds across the former lake bed.

Cousins Richard Norris and James Norris said the movement is made possible when ice sheets that form after rare overnight rains melt in the rising sun, making the hard ground muddy and slick. On Dec. 20, 2013, the cousins catalogued 60 rocks moving across the playa’s pancake-flat surface. “Observed rock movement occurred on sunny, clear days, following nights of sub-freezing temperatures,” they wrote in a report published Wednesday in the on-

line scientific journal PLOS ONE. The conclusion proves theories that have been floated since geologists began studying the moving rocks in the 1940s. The phenomenon doesn’t happen often because it rarely rains in the notoriously hot and dry desert valley. The rocks move about 15 feet (5 metres) per minute, according to the report. Richard Norris, 55, a paleobiologist at Scripps, and James, 59, a research engineer, launched their “Slither-

down a cliff.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My second cousin “Susan” and I are in our 60s and have been friends since childhood. I was widowed six years ago. Susan never married. Four years ago, Susan and I started traveling together. It’s much cheaper to travel as part of a couple than solo, and we get along well. Now, however, there are a couple of problems. Susan has put on so much weight that she encroaches on my airplane seat and tour bus bench. Airplane seats are not that comfortable to begin with, and Susan takes up a good third of mine. This makes long flights very uncomfortable. I think Susan should pay for a first-class seat or two coach seats. The other problem is that Susan has taken in several stray dogs and cats, and her clothes reek of cat urine. I no longer want to share a hotel closet when we travel, because my clothes begin to smell like hers. Susan is already talking about another trip, and I don’t know how to respond. I enjoy traveling, but I cannot deal with these things anymore. Any suggestions? -- Struggling Cousin Dear Cousin: You have to tell Susan about the cat odor. She is undoubtedly so accustomed to it that she can no longer smell it. Say, “Susan, I’m sure you probably don’t notice it, but your clothes are starting to smell like your cats. Perhaps it would help to change the type of litter you use or put your clothes in a different closet.” The weight issue, however, is more sensitive. If you are willing to address it directly, gently let Susan know that her size makes travel uncomfortable for you. Consider buying your own first-class, business class or premium economy ticket, and Susan can follow suit or sit elsewhere. Or perhaps you each could share the cost of a third seat so you have extra room. You also could suggest sitting separately on tour buses so that you can meet new friends along the way. Dear Annie: My dad is in his mid-90s. There is a woman in her early 60s who has worked for him and been a companion of his for about six months. Dad would like to ask this lady to move in with him. This isn’t particularly romantic in nature. The only thing Dad knows about the woman is that she seems to be nice and likes him. She would continue to be his employee and, in addition, would care for him in his own home. Dad wants us all to get together and discuss this matter. We are concerned about his financial situation and his health. What should we do? -- Concerned Dear Concerned: Is Dad mentally competent? Have you met this woman? There are lawyers who specialize in elder law and can draw up papers to protect Dad’s assets, regardless of the circumstances. But if the woman is essentially a live-in paid companion and caregiver, it is simply a matter of checking on Dad regularly to see that he is properly cared for. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “At a Loss for Words,” whose mother shows little interest in her daughter’s children. She says her mom “is extremely self-centered.” She wants her mother in her life, but the hurt is getting to be too much. I agree with most of your advice, but I think she should continue to invite the mother, regardless of whether she attends or not. Narcissistic people crave attention, even negative attention. Not inviting Mom allows her to think of herself as a victim of an ungrateful daughter. An invitation hurts no one, especially if the grandchildren are taught that Grandma probably won’t attend, and it prevents giving Grandma a way to show her disapproval, cause hurt and be the center of attention. -- N in N.C. Obituaries William McNeil “Bill” 1949 - 2014 Bill McNeil, born on January 17, 1949 in Cranbrook, BC, passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC on Monday, August 25, 2014.

Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He was taught the tradition of hunting and fishing by his father and passed that down to his own family. Bill was a devoted long time employee at the Sullivan Mine. He took great pride in his crews’ safety and production. He loved to talk about mining, fishing and hunting with everyone he met. Bill could be found yelling “fore” on the golf course in the summer and thought St. Patrick’s Day should have been a national holiday! He was a very proud husband, father and grandfather. Bill will be dearly missed by all who knew him. “Raise a shot of Irish Whiskey in his honour”. Bill is survived by his wife of 46 years Gail, daughter Tara (Vex Palasty), son Brad (Janna) McNeil, grandsons Jaryn McNeil, Erik Palasty and granddaughter Breylin McNeil. He was predeceased by his father William Joseph McNeil. A memorial service for Bill will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014 at 11:00 am at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

George Barrett, of Nelson, BC, died on Monday, August 25, 2014 at the age of 88. Born in Blackburn, Lancashire, to Fred and Elizabeth Barrett, George was an athletic adventurer, with a passion for cricket and soccer, having played for the Blackburn Rovers Youth team. At age 18 George volunteered for the aircrew in World War II. His skills placed him with the Royal Engineers, in the 9th squadron of the British Airborne Forces. He served as a paratrooper, dropped behind enemy lines to secure footholds from within. His assignments included the Liberation of Norway (May 8th, 1945) and stations in both Egypt and Palestine, where he was involved in rescue efforts after the bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. His brother, Joseph, was sadly killed in the line of duty. After the War, his experience as an electrical engineer brought him to Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) where he supervised the development of a pulp and paper mill. While there, he fell in love with calypso music, and sought, and obtained, his next posting in Antigua, the West Indies, where he moved in 1960. George worked for ten years in the sugar and oil industries in Antigua, which is where he met his beloved wife Susan (née Kent), who was visiting from England. Their daughters Eve and Joy were born in Antigua. In 1971 George, Susan and their daughters immigrated to Cranbrook, BC, where he had been offered an engineering position. Moving from a tropical climate to Canadian winters was an adjustment, but he never regretted the move to the country where they happily raised their family. George is survived by his wife, Susan Barrett, and four children: son Stephen and wife Yvonne in England; son Philip and wife Yvonne in England; daughter Eve and husband Paul Burkart; and daughter Joy and husband Gregory Mackenzie. He is survived by nine grandchildren: Marie, David, Jessica, Emily, Jasmine, Kyra, Julia, Dashwood and Esmé. Seven greatgrandchildren also survive George. George will be very sadly missed by his family. He was a patient, loving and funny man, with a passion for gardening, politics and puns. He is remembered by all as a true gentleman; a kind and sweet man, whose mild-mannered exterior belied his adventurous life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Saviour’s Anglican Church or the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation. The family would like to thank Dr. Kirsten for his exceptionally kind and attentive care. George’s funeral will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, September 9th at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church. Interment of the ashes at the Nelson Cemetery will immediately follow the service. All are welcome at the Barrett’s home afterwards.

Responsibilities include: Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Reception, and general office duties. This position is full-time, Monday to Friday. We offer competitive wages, BC Medical, extended health coverage, dental, and a group RRSP after a term of employment. Email to: jbradwell@fabrite.ca

KILO is a 7 year old Anatolian Shepherd cross. He is neutered and up to date on vaccinations. He lived on an acreage with one other dog named Kera since he was a puppy. CALLIE is a very sweet and quite senior. She is approximately 10 years old, she is spayed and up to date on vaccinations. She is very affectionate and loves attention. She gets along good with other cats and with dogs, she really doesn’t seem to mind much. Callie is a very sweet cat, she doesn’t have a lot of energy. She would prefer to laze around in a sunny spot indoors.

LARS is your typical husky- Very smart but sneaky! Lars has a strong prey drive and would not be suitable for a home with cats or small animals. Lars is a very athletic, if he is not exercised enough he may become bored and get destructive. Lars can jump over a 6ft fence, and can open latches on gates. Lars is house trained. neutered and all his shots are up to date.

DIAMOND is an 8 month old plott/ walker hound cross. Diamond gets excited very easily so she may jump up or knock a child over. She knows how to sit and lay down and she loves to play fetch!! When playing with toys she gets very excitable and will jump up and try to get the toy from your hands. If Diamond is bored she will bark, barking is the reason she is in the shelter. She needs a lot of daily exercise or a job to do. She is a very intelligent and loving little girl.

Our biggest fundraiser of the year, Paws For A Cause Walk, is just around the corner and we are encouraging everyone to take part! It is our goal to raise $20,000 and we need your help! Join us September 21st, 10am-2pm! Facts about the BCSPCA East Kootenay Branch •

The East Kootenay Branch is responsible for a huge area. It spans from Creston to Golden, and from Kimberley to the Alberta boarder.

Our shelter housed the most animals out of any shelter in the province of BC in the month of July. For the past few months, we have on average, been responsible for over 100 animals per day.

The majority of these animals are not spayed or neutered and it is up to us to pay for it to get done before any of these animals are ready for adoption. We also have animals that need other vet care and medication. We vaccinate all cats and dogs who enter our shelter.

The East Kootenay Shelter’s medical costs for the month of July and August exceeded $17,000. The majority of the medical costs are spay/ neuter expenses.

We do not receive any federal or provincial funding. We rely on fundraising, donations and grants in order to operate. With an annual operating budget of $420,000 we need to do a LOT of fundraising!

We are currently upgrading our shelter to make it healthier for our animals, staff and volunteers, but in reality our shelter is way too small. In reality we need a new facility that is up to date with animal welfare standards and is large enough to help all of the animals in need within the East Kootenays. We have a dream!

How can you help?

KERA is a 10.5 year old Great Pyrenees/Husky cross. She is spayed and up to date on vaccinations. Kera came to our shelter with another dog named Kilo, other than Kilo she has never been socialized with other dogs. Kera would do best in a home without other dogs and without cats. Kera enjoys going for walks and loves to go for “truck rides”. She knows how to sit, lay down, stay and she walks great on a leash!
