Nanaimo hospital locked down after threat BY CHRIS BUSH
THE NEWS BULLETIN
Police and Nanaimo Regional General Hospital staff locked down the hospital shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a weapons threat. Erring on the side of caution, police blocked off all hospital entrances, although ambulance crews were able to access the emergency ward. Mounties tracked down and arrested the suspect several kilometres from the hospital shortly before 6 p.m. Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong, Nanaimo RCMP spokeswoman, said she did not know what kind of weapon
the 39-year-old Nanaimo man allegedly threatened the hospital with, but he did not have a weapon with him at the time of his arrest. “Our first consideration is always public safety,” Armstrong said. “We’re not going to lock down something like that unless we believe a weapon could be utilized.” Police are not commenting on the suspect’s relationship to the hospital, but Armstrong confirmed he is not an employee of NRGH. Police were able to locate the suspect quickly because his identity was given to them. “Police are still in the early stages of their investigation and there’s more work to be done,” Armstrong said.
“We’re still in the process of determining whether charges will be forwarded to Crown counsel.” Valerie Wilson, Island Health spokeswoman, said the next steps include debriefing sessions to review the incident, determine lessons that can be learned and any recommendations regarding violence prevention protocols. A bomb threat also had the hospital on lockdown for a short time on Wednesday. Wilson said NRGH received a bomb threat in the early afternoon and that police gave the all clear at about 1 p.m. The investigation into that incident continues. photos@nanaimobulletin.com
The possibility of the B.C. teachers’ strike spilling into September is throwing a wrench into the Nanaimo school district’s preparations for the start of the school year. Donna Reimer, school district spokeswoman, said school is scheduled to start Sept. 3 but whether classes commence is absolutely dependent on what takes place at the bargaining table. The school district is ultimately hoping for a resolution but the uncertainty is making it difficult to make contingency plans and get ready for 2014-15, she said. “The biggest problem that we foresee is [this] week is the week that we take new registrations and the week that parents let us know if they aren’t coming back to their school ... so for schools to know exactly which kids they have, which ones are coming, what the new ones are, how much space they have, if schools are behind picket lines next week, then our start-up will be a bit more difficult,” Reimer said. Rather than having parents heading to schools to register, crossing picket lines in the process, Reimer said the school district is recommending they call the school and talk to the principal. She said the school district

board office has been behind picket lines since July 20 and as a result, maintenance work on district schools has not been completed, as related staff don’t wish to cross lines. “We have stopped watering our fields and they haven’t been maintained, so the fields might not be in the shape we’d like them to be, schools may not have all the updating projects that we would’ve liked to have done in the summer,” she said. Mike Ball, Nanaimo teachers’ union president, confirmed that Jim Iker, provincial president, met with Education Minister Peter Fassbender and Peter Cameron, the province’s chief negotiator, for discussions yesterday. “I don’t know what [they’ll discuss]. We’re not sure yet how much they have to offer, but it sounded like they wanted to run something by him to try and see if they could get a deal done,” Ball said yesterday. “How successful it will be, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.” According to Ball, mediator Vince Ready has also been involved in discussions with both sides. He estimated a soft deadline of Friday (Aug. 29) as a timeframe a deal would have to be reached by in order to avoid a delay to the start of the school year. The camp is for children aged five to 12 and Beck said more details will be available next week. “They can just call to get their name on the interest list,” said Beck. “If there is

“I’m surrounded by a lot of parents and a lot of working parents that pay for my regular programming in the school year and so everyone’s getting scared and overwhelmed and not sure what’s going to happen, so I just kept getting asked [and said], ‘Let’s give it a shot,’” Chelmak said. Compensation package sent back for revision
I
dirEctor WaNtS consideration for additional meetings. BY KARL YU THe NewS BuLLeTIN
A revision has forced recommendations aimed at increasing and revising Regional District of Nanaimo board compensation back into hands of staff. Regional directors were set to vote on amending remuneration at Tuesday’s board meeting, but Alec McPherson, Electoral Area A director, proposed a
motion to refer back to staff in order to include additional meeting compensation for directors. According to the regional district, directors receive a base compensation rate of $11,855, which covers up to four regularly scheduled board or committee meetings, update meetings and up to one additional informational seminar a month. Rates are paid for attendance at extra meetings and currently, electoral area directors also receive $6,585 for extra duties that they have to attend. The recommendations were compiled by a review committee, which included
former directors, and called for an elimination of the per-meeting rate, something with which McPherson had issue. He said updated information was not used and the removal of compensation for additional meetings puts regional district electoral area directors at 75 per cent of an average peer group chosen by the committee as a comparison. “For the electoral area directors, when we go through the process, myself for example, I probably have 80 additional meetings and under the recommendation that was proposed, I will take a hit...
By removing it, it’s given no recognition that some directors are way busier than other directors,” McPherson said. The only way to differentiate would be to re-instate the additional meeting compensation, he said. Other recommendations included an electoral area director allowance increase by $1,200 following the pay period after the new board assumes office following this November’s elections. An allowance increase by $3,605 for the board chairman, who is currently Joe Stanhope, is also proposed in the same pay period.

Nine rescued after boat overturns By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN
Nine people on a fishing trip were fortunate to have a lighthouse keeper and a Nanaimo Harbour Patrol craft nearby when their boat turned turtle near Entrance Island. The skipper of the stricken eight-metre craft radioed a distress call shortly after 2 p.m. Monday and the lighthouse keeper at Entrance Island was first to respond,
plucking people from the water and those still on board the vessel. They were transferred to the Nanaimo Harbour Patrol boat MV Eagle, which was working near Protection Island and responded to the scene. “We transferred the people to the MV Eagle and notified the various authorities that we had nine people on board, two potentially with hypothermia and one possibly with a heart condition,” said Edward Dahlgren, Nanaimo Port Authority harbour master and director of operations. Dahlgren said it appeared the boat began taking on water at the stern, became

swamped and lost stability, capsizing and dumping the crew and passengers into the water. He did not know why the boat took on water, but said something might have happened to cause a hull failure. Dahlgren said the boat was a Grady-White sport fishing craft and that it and the people on board were from Richmond. No one was injured, but three people were taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for treatment. Dahlgren said Transport Canada would be investigating the cause of the accident. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Off-leash dog park proposed for Gabriola Set-up similar to Nanaimo’s popular Beban Park location
By Karl yu The News bulleTiN
A group of citizens is hoping to see a dog park established on Gabriola T:8.233” Island.
Gabriola resident Mary Gillis made a presentation to the Area B Parks and Open Space Advisory Committee in June for an off-leash park, which she said
is common on the Lower Mainland. Gillis said other islanders share her sentiments and would like to see a fenced area with separation for small
and big dogs, similar to the dog park at Nanaimo’s Beban Park. “The overall park is fenced all the way around and then it has access through two or three different gates and they’re double gates. You have to go into this little area, unleash your dog, open the second gate into the main park and all the other dogs come crowding around and sniff, so right there your dog is in the position of the newcomer ... I’ve never seen a fight at Beban Park,” said Gillis. She said the group will get more organized in the fall and is looking at fundraising for the project. She said it would be of value to have some land from the regional district. Gabriola Island/ Area B director and committee chairman, Howard Houle, said the project has been added to the committee’s five-year work plan. “Now what we’ll do is we have to wait until it rises to the top [of the list] and in the meantime, the advocates for that are going around looking at designs, so they can come to us with some designs and cost and that sort of thing,” said Houle. He said there are few places on the island in which a dog park can be established and suggested Paisley Place as a locale. While the park is close to a hectare in size, Houle said there isn’t more than half of that available. When the project begins is dependent on the advocates, according to Houle. “They’re going to do fundraising and prepare a plan and those sorts of things and all those things help to move it forward,” Houle said, adding that the committee would like to have it done in 2015. Spuds help feed city’s hungry

Minetown Day celebrates coal history From watermelon-eating contests to a parade and petting farm, it’s all there at Lantzville’s 40th Minetown Day festival. The district is hosting the community’s largest annual event Sept. 6 in celebration of its coalmining past. According to Denise Haime, district councillor and event organizer, it’s the only event that recognizes Lantzville’s beginnings in mining and attracts upwards of 1,000 people. Day-long activities include nailhammering contests, a parade, talent show and petting farm. The Lantzville Fire Rescue also hopes to have its new inflatable fire safety house on display. Lantzville began to boom in

n the day before August’s full moon, a small group of volunteers worked quickly to set up a popup food operation at Italian Square Park. They hauled out tables, stacked water bottles and readied stations of butter, sour cream and all the trimmings to heap onto homebaked potatoes. Before they pulled out the first spud, a lineup of the city’s hungry already stretched from table to parking lot. For 12 years, on the Saturday closest to the full moon, volunteers with the Serving Potatoes to Unrecognized Devas or SPUD Patrol have distributed potatoes to people in downtown Nanaimo. The numbers they serve depend on what volunteers are able to bring and most is out-of-pocket. The group doesn’t advertise or accept corporate donations, according to local coordinator Ev Schmidt. “It’s just about people feeding people,” she said. Schmidt created the Nanaimo patrol in 2002 after seeing the same initiative in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The idea is to make sure people on the streets are being fed by having volunteers directly hand out spuds. They bake the potatoes, bring butter, sour cream and extras and dish them out. “It was such a heart-opening experience for me there,” Schmidt said. “It just really felt good to be able to connect with people that I normally wouldn’t connect with. I questioned whether there was a place for this in Nanaimo.” She talked to people living on the streets and visited lineups at the Salvation Army to spread the word about the baked potato program. Nanaimo would also have used clothing for people to look through. It was well received and has been ever since, said Schmidt, who now sees as

the 1900s with the discovery of coal. Hundreds of miners and their families flocked to the area looking for work and businesses and schools sprung up to serve them. These days, Minetown Day has become about community, according to Lantzville fire chief and longtime resident Tom Whipps, who says it’s a time to celebrate together. “Mostly it’s evolved into a fun day for the community and the kids of the community,” he said. The event kicks off at 8 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 257 with a pancake breakfast and a 10:30 a.m. parade. Activities will be at Huddlestone Park until 3 p.m.

many as 100 people turn out for lunch. More than 50 men, women and children were at Italian Square Park Aug. 9, many of whom the volunteers greeted by name. For Schmidt the program is all about connecting with people, hearing their stories and having empathy and compassion. Nobody wakes up and says they want to live on the street or be drug-addicted, she said. Volunteer Wendi Bazant said it’s a good feeling to know you’re making a little bit of a difference and people are appreciative. “It’s something they can count on,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what the weather is ... if it’s raining sideways, we’re always here [on the Saturday

Then there’s the food: “Nothing jumpstarts your afternoon like a baked potato,” he said. Nicole Frenette was grinning as she walked away with a potato heaped with all the trimmings. Everyone loves the program, she said as she pointed out everything slathered onto the spud. “It’s awesome,” she said. “Look at this – there’s butter.” SPUD Patrol is looking for volunteers. End to strike due next week
The provincial government and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation have an assignment and it’s due next week: resolve this labour dispute. The teachers’ strike began in the spring semester and there’s now a real possibility it will impact the fall semester. There are no signs of progress or reasons for optimism. The B.C. Public Schools Employers’ Association, representing the government, and the BCTF, representing 40,000 teachers, claim not to be speaking publicly about the bargaining, but that’s OK, because there doesn’t seem to be any bargaining to speak of. The two sides continue to argue over wages and class size and composition, as they have for months. We kind of understand that there wasn’t an urgency to spend these last couple of months at the bargaining table, when summer holidays beckoned and back to school seemed a long way away. But somewhere along the line, both sides should have noticed that there was a deadline approaching. They should have circled the day after Labour Day in their homework planners and realized that’s when they have to submit their work to us – B.C. taxpayers and families – or risk a failing grade. As it stands right now, the government and the teachers should not be proud of the work they’re expected to hand in on Tuesday. Sure, they can spin their stubbornness as resolve and good intentions. They can throw us $40 a day, something shiny to distract us from what we really want. This Sept. 2 deadline matters to British Columbians. Our kids need to go to school, not just for an education, not just for a place to go, but for both those reasons and a million others. We knew school was going to be out for summer; we know school isn’t going to be out forever. It should be in session, as scheduled, or else both sides get an F for effort. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith, V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

This leaves that process out, and so I think that’s the problem people are having.” A reader who attended the Kelowna session said even winery operators aren’t thrilled about the proposal to enlarge retail space and allow sales of wine or beer not made on site. And he agreed with Popham that the ALC is doing a good job with subdivision applications. Popham also clarified the situation with the leased craft gin distillery on her own Vancouver Island farm. It started as a winery, and the conversion needed only local government approval because the production facility was already considered and taxed as light industrial. Victoria Gin has been a model for the government’s push to allow distilleries, breweries or meaderies on farmland. Given the B.C. Liberals’ love of liberalized liquor, I expect that change to go through. u Tom Fletcher is a columnist and legislative reporter for Black Press.

City’s tree management bylaw misdirected To the Editor,
Re: Company faces city fine for illegally clearing trees, Aug. 19. I’m still trying to wrap my head around our newly adopted tree management bylaw. Without trying to protect developers who think they are above the law, I would venture to say this property borders on swampy wetlands and the trees were not much to speak of anyways. The true crime was the developer did not have the blessing from the city environmental planner and removed the trees while his application for development was still pending. What would have happened had he waited? Would he have been told to plant three trees for each one removed? This is the
case in some areas, but that only applies to ‘significant trees’ which have a diameter of two metres or more. Now, I ask you to look at a Chase River property, a forest with hundreds of trees. The developer is applying for a subdivision application from the city and I’m sure he will wait until the application is approved so as not to receive any fines, but what about the trees and the forest? How does the protection of trees bylaw apply to this area? Will it protect real trees or is it all smoke and mirrors? Significant trees cannot be replaced with three skinny little ornamental trees a metre and a half high, nor should they be cut at all.

To the Editor,
Re: Company faces city fine for illegally clearing trees, Aug. 19. I have seen trees cut down during bird nesting time leaving broken eggs and baby birds all over the ground while the adults fly around hopelessly looking for what was home until man came along and destroyed it. I have seen and heard trees being cut down in the evening hours,

Re: Colliery dam saga can’t keep dragging on, Opinion, Aug. 19. It is true that over $2 million dollars has now been spent on the Colliery dams. Most of the first half went to the ill-conceived plan for removal of the two dams based on an impending emergency. The most current information received is that the dams would not disintegrate in an earthquake. Furthermore, there would be very little consequence to people downstream as a result of the highly unlikely possibility of the dams actually failing. This latest effort by the city to portray them as suddenly a huge menace because of a mythical flood runs contrary to what we now know. We do not support spending millions for a problem that likely does not exist. Before spending millions more and doing serious damage to the park, the Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society has urged patience in order to get the facts and then decide what is required. If this had been done years ago we would have saved a great deal of time and money and avoided considerable angst for everyone involved. It is still not too late to get it right. We have time.

Re: Teachers understand education issues, Letters, Aug. 19. I find myself deeply resenting the whole mess called the teachers’ strike. It seems to me obvious that the government is deliberately trying to starve the teachers out and create an atmosphere of dissension and mistrust. Then, they can legislate the B.C. Teachers’ Federation back to work and no one will argue about it. As the guardian of a special-needs child, I have seen first-hand the results of this government’s mismanagement of the educational system. The teachers and the educational assistants I know give 200 per cent, but if they do not get more help in the classroom, the future will be bleak indeed. The welfare rolls and the prison system will be full of

which would give the impression something illegal is going on, and I have seen some beautiful trees cut down just because they were planted in the wrong place and are now too big and in the way. What a shame. Trees clean our air. They provide shade, windbreaks around our houses and homes for wildlife. Yes, we can replant, but one small four-foot tree does not do nearly the job several 50-foot ones do. Without trees, our environment is less than it should be. While it’s bad enough that so many of our trees are being cut down, those who do it illegally should pay heavily. The fines quoted are far too small.

Coastal Expressions showcases local art

SHOW RUNS downtown all next week.
BY NICHOLAS PESCOD The News BulleTiN
When Lisa Danesin was a young girl she would sometimes find herself in trouble for doing what she loved. “I was that kid in school who was always getting in trouble for drawing on her desk,” Danesin recalled. “I was the one who had to stay after school and scrub her desk off.” Although the days of drawing on desks are long gone, Danesin’s love for drawing and creating has followed her throughout her life as an awardwinning professional artist. “My life has always revolved around art, which is pretty cool because not everybody gets to follow exactly what they want to do,” she said. Two of her abstract pieces, Before and

Nocturne, are currently on display at the downtown Nanaimo Art Gallery as part of the Nanaimo chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists’ Coastal Expressions exhibition and sale, which runs until Sept. 6. “I am sort of like a jack-of-all-trades,” Danesin said. “I work in very representa-
tional art. That’s my background, but I also go over to the abstract side.” Coastal Expressions also features a number of artists from the Nanaimo chapter and all of the artwork in the show was selected by a jury of three signature members of the FCA. Danesin was born in Sidney, B.C., but was raised in the Harbour
City and knew early on that she would become an artist. “I was handing assignments with little doodles down the margins,” the former John Barsby Secondary School student said. “I was always going to be an artist. There wasn’t even any question about it.” As an artist, Danesin, who graduated from the University of Victoria with a degree in fine arts, enjoys working with a variety of mediums including watercolours and large format abstracts in acrylic. “For me they are very organic,” Danesin explained about her abstract work. “Some abstracts are geometric and I am not a very geometric person.” For a full display of Danesin’s artwork, please visit www. silverdog.ca and for more information on Coastal Expressions, visit www.nanaimoartgallery.com. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

art gallery features mixed media By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
There are only a few days left to check out the Nanaimo Art Council’s Summer Art Show and Sale. The show and sale, which is being held at the art council’s gallery inside Nanaimo North Town Centre, consists of a number of different media including paintings and pottery by local artists. The show features a number of pieces
by Nanaimo potter Audrey Verhaar, which can be purchased. She said creating pottery is a humbling experience. “You have a piece of clay that comes from the earth and is being processed as clay; from basically almost nothing one can create something useful,” Verhaar told the News Bulletin. The art show and sale runs until Sunday (Aug. 31) at the mall, located at 259-4750 Rutherford Rd. For more information, please call 250-729-3947 or visit www.nanaimoartscouncil.ca. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To the fabulous educators at Jolly Giant Childcare on Selby Street. You do an amazing job caring for all the children. The love that you have for this profession shines through each and every day. BEEF To the person who makes a mess on Cedar Road drawing crosswalks and ‘slow down’ on the road. You can get a ‘slow down’ sign that would be more effective. BOUQUET To the officers of HMCS Edmonton for not running down two hapless kayakers you encountered bobbing in heavy swells way out in mid-strait. Your apparent concern for our well-being (or disbelief at our lunacy) was much appreciated.
BOUQUET To the kind, elderly gentlemen who I see several times a week cleaning up Island Highway. You are a gem to our city, and great inspiration for others. BEEF To this ridiculous strike by the teachers. I live across the street from an elementary school and have seen three teachers picketing exactly twice. If they were so concerned with getting this deal done and getting back to school, they would be doing everything they can to do just that.
BEEF To the vet clinic for overcharging for a visit where nothing was done for my cat except it came home with fleas.
BEEF To the store for selling deceptively sized clothing and having a ‘no-returns’ policy. Head office never responded.
BOUQUET To the Nanaimo Golf Club for an amazing reception for our daughter and new son-in-law. A special thank you to Charles for all of your assistance.
BOUQUET To the manager of SportChek in Woodgrove Centre. We were able to return my husband’s shoes that squeaked without any trouble at all, no questions asked.
BEEF To all landlords who think they can manipulate and control their tenants. We pay rent for a reason. Or maybe you shouldn’t rent or be a landlord.
BOUQUET To Josh of Milestone Equipment Contracting for changing over our septic to sewer on Hammond Bay Road. It was a pleasure dealing with you from our first meeting till we paid you. Kyle and Conrad did an exceptional job on our steep hill and were a treat to work with and a great reflection of your company.
BOUQUET To Tammy and Dave for opening their restaurant for our daughter and sonin-law’s wedding brunch. A special thank you to chef Troy for a wonderful meal. BEEF To the organizers. Not a recycle container in sight. What ends up in the landfill says volumes about you. BOUQUET To everyone at Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital, especially Jasmine and Dr. El Mouldi. Iris the cat and her owners received compassionate and above-and-beyond care. Thank you to the SPCA for its post-adoption support. BEEF To city council for not listening. We do not want a recycling depot anywhere on Old Victoria Road. Shame on you for putting more people through it all again.
BOUQUET To the sales lady at Splashes Kitchen and Bath. You found us a spray attachment for our kitchen faucet and charged us nothing. We will be sure to recommend your business.
BOUQUET To Kurtis at Target. I dropped my wallet. I get a call at my house and it’s him, informing me of this. The store has been closed for 30 minutes and there he is, waiting in the dark, at the front door. BOUQUET To the lady who traded seats with me so I could see the second half of the Symphony in the Park show after some people had moved our chairs. BOUQUET To back-to-school sales that feature plenty of laptops and hand-held electronic devices but they also show paper, pens, pencils and crayons. BOUQUET To Richard and Ron for fixing the ladder and raft at Colliery Dam Park. Community heroes who recognized action needed to be taken for safety reasons and did something, asking for nothing in return.
BOUQUET To the staff at Nanaimo Ice Centre for taking care of me when I entered their facility feeling very ill. Their kindness, goodwill and outstanding citizenship is very much appreciated.
BOUQUET To the woman in Southgate Country Grocer who returned the $50 bill I had dropped. Your honesty will re-pay you.
BOUQUET To Deklin at Clydesdale Moving and Storage for moving my furniture so efficiently and carefully at a reasonable cost. BOUQUET I retired here from the mainland 11 year ago. Best move ever. This is a lovely place to live.
BOUQUET To all the wonderful caregivers at Nanaimo Home Support who looked after my husband, Garner, when he needed care. BOUQUET To Kyler of Personal Assistance to Seniors for tackling jobs with which seniors have difficulty at a very reasonable cost. PATS is a wonderful community service for seniors. BOUQUET To head chef Frank and the amazing staff at Zougla’s Restaurant. They went above and beyond for our wedding with three days’ notice. We had amazing food and the service was exceptional.
Submit your own Beef or Bouquet
BOUQUET To the Nanaimo Regional Airport. What a change in the last couple of years. This airport is finally being service by different airline carriers. lt’s a busy airport now. Special thanks to volunteer Jim for all your help. BOUQUET To Carrie from Azmeth Forest Consultants for picking up my binder off the highway after it fell off my car.
BOUQUET To Tony and the staff at Alberni Transmission. If all businesses were run as honestly as this, they, too, would be as successful.
BOUQUET To Dr. Kam Grewal and his caring staff at Wellington Dental Clinic for giving me my smile back. I have had many compliments which makes me very happy so I smile even more.
BOUQUET To my amazing personal trainer, Miguel, at Driven Performance. Your dedication and passion is above and beyond. Thank you for giving me a new look on life.
BOUQUET To Pet Smart Grooming Salon. Kudos for all your hard work with many different types and doing a great job at it.

Picnic will feed education fund

SOCIeTY ChaNgeS lives of two women from afghanistan. By Lindsay Chung Black Press
Tying together education and hope, the Wiltshire Education Society is working hard to raise money to help two young Afghan women complete university studies at Vancouver Island University. The society is a small group of Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Saltair residents who banded together to bring two Afghan refugees who were living in Pakistan to Canada and provide their education. “Our mission is really giving hope through education, and we believe that by changing one life, you can change many, said Lynda McCullough, society member. Society members chose to help these two women after meeting their older sister, who recently graduated from
VIU. From her, they learned about the worsening security situation facing her parents, and particularly her two sisters, who have been living in Pakistan as refugees, but are under pressure to repatriate. “Since 1995, our family has made our home in Pakistan, but in 2012, the government began to pressure Afghan refugees to return to Afghanistan, the sisters write in a society brochure. “We lost many basic human rights ... Also, in our family, we are particularly at risk. We speak Persian, and our parents are of different ethnicities. Our dad is Tajik and a practising Sunni, whilst our mom is Hazara and a Shia Muslim, as are we. This makes our whole family a target for extremists and vulnerable to persecution. After arriving on Christmas Day 2013, the sisters entered a full semester of English as a Second Language and have now completed their first courses in the business program at VIU. To date, the society has
raised $40,0000 to pay for its expenses until the end of 2014, and now the society is turning to the community for help. “We think we need to raise another $100,000 to support these girls, said McCullough. “They have three years to finish their degree, and international education is very expensive. In co-operation with the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society, the society is holding a Picnic in the Park Celebration on Sept. 6 at 3:30 p.m. at Maffeo Sutton Park. The event features music by Masima Marimba Band and from Mbira Spirit. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic meal. Admission is by donation, and all proceeds support the sisters’ education. As well, the society is holding a silent auction, dinner and music Oct. 24 at the Grand Hotel in Nanaimo. Mom was called to our Lord on Tuesday, August 19, 2014. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, Otto, on Saturday, December 20, 2003. Mom leaves behind her four children: Monika (Gary), Ursula (Clark), Gerhard (Debbie) and Ralph (Gail), and one grandson Ryan. Born on July 4, 1919 in the tiny village of Berghaupten, in the Black Forest Region of Southwestern Germany, Mom was the longest living member of her family. Mom survived WWII, spending many endless days and nights in bomb shelters with her family. Soon after the war came to an end she met and married our father Otto. They had two children, Monika and Ursula. In 1951 Mom and Dad got permission to move to Canada. They fulfilled their one year obligation to work on a farm in Northern Manitoba. From there they moved to Winnipeg, where Gerhard and Ralph would be born. In 1966 their final move was to Vancouver Island. In 1999, Mom suffered two strokes. Despite all the odds and predictions against her, within four months, with the loving care of her family, Mom willed herself to walk and talk and to do what she loved best, cook and bake. Mom also loved gardening. She was a very early riser as she loved to hear the birds singing in the morning. She always said “I do it my way and “I never give up hope. We, the family, would like to thank the medical staff at NRGH. A very special, heartfelt thank you to Dr. Helmut Mark, Pastor Colin Liske and Jackie Firby. MOM – I will always remember your kindness, loving care, tender touch, wisdom and especially your cooking and baking. I will cherish my memories of you in my heart forever. You were the best mother a child could ask for or wish for. I am very proud of you. It was my pleasure to be one of your children, thank you for being my mother. – Your loving son, Ralph. “Fliege mit mir in die Heimat, Fliege mit mir in den Himmel Hinein

DEATHS
KURT BONKOWSKI March 29, 1928 - August 16, 2014
Kurt peacefully left us on August 16, 2014. Although he experienced diminished health in recent years, he remained interested in life and people. Left to mourn are Irene - his wife of 50 years, with whom he had a deep bond, daughter Kathy (Brad), son Mike (Ann) and grandchildren Cameron and Miranda. Surviving siblings are Heinz, Waldi, Helga and Dieter, all of the Nanaimo area, whose continued participation in Kurt’s life has been extremely valuable. He will be greatly missed. Maps, history, ham radio, photography (with his own dark-room), gardening and reading were some of Kurt’s great interests. He did everything methodically and well. Given the opportunity, he could have been a history professor. His academic recall remained phenomenal to the end. Kurt was born and raised in western Poland, but the years of World War II changed the path of the Bonkowski family. Kurt’s parents operated a farm, and sacrifices were made for him to attend high school in a nearby city. The war intervened and Kurt never did graduate, though he has been a life-long learner. Sponsored by his Aunt and Uncle Wende, he arrived in Canada in 1949 at age 21, the first of his family to emigrate. He went to work in the woods and logged until he became a Canadian citizen. He then he found work with Canada Post, beginning as a letter carrier and retiring as a postal clerk in 1988. Retirement years were immensely enjoyed, and Kurt and Irene were rarely apart. They travelled modestly, kept active with church and friends and of course stayed very involved in their childrens’ lives. Kurt even learned to use a computer and the internet! It was also a privilege for Kurt and Irene to share a home for many years in South Wellington with his parents, Ferdinand and Else. The entire Bonkowski clan on Vancouver Island has shared much together over the years. Kurt also made it a priority for the family to visit Irene’s relatives regularly in the Okanagan. Kathy and Mike are thankful for those trips, as well as yearly camping trips to Rathtrevor Beach, and also for Kurt’s role in encouraging our musical gifts and other interests, and most importantly for teaching us the love of God. The family thanks the wonderful and excellent staff at Nanaimo Seniors Village for Kurt’s care during the past three and a half years, and also thanks Dr. Roe for his skill and compassion. We wish to honour his life with a memorial service on Saturday August 30, 2014 at 1:00pm, at Maranatha Foursquare Gospel Church, located at 6553 Portsmouth Rd, Nanaimo, BC. All are welcome.

PrIvaTE sCHOOLs begin despite strike in public education.
Police will be enforcing school zone speed limits next week whether or not a teachers’ strike prevents schools from opening. Nanaimo RCMP are reminding the public that although public schools might not open Tuesday (Sept. 2), private schools will be back in session and police will
enforce the 30 km/h speed limit in school zones. They are also reminding drivers to watch their speed and keep an eye out for children in cross walks and students are reminded to use crosswalks and walk on sidewalks. School zones are in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nanaimo’s private schools include Nanaimo Christian School, Discover Montessori School and Aspengrove School. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Project Linus organizer Evelyn McNabb, centre back, had the help of four of her children, Emma, Gracie, Hannah and Isaac, when delivering 45 handmade quilts.
Blankets help provide comfort Evelyn McNabb, of Project Linus, brought some of her favourite people to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation office when she dropped off 45 brand new quilts for children facing medical crisis at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Four of her nine children helped McNabb deliver the most recent handcrafted donation, but they have also helped their mother wash, bundle, and tag each quilt
for the last 10 years. The McNabbs started a Vancouver Island Project Linus Chapter in 2004 as a way to honour their daughter Emily, who passed away in 1998 at the age of three. The most recent batch will be shared between the pediatric unit, emergency department, and neonatal unit. For more information, please visit www.projectlinusvancouverisland.weebly. com.

Rugby club trying to refresh Quickfacts I HORNETS HOPE to recruit men, women, kids.
NANAIMO HORNETS RFC rugby club is holding free camps Sept. 6 at May Richards Bennett Pioneer Park.
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
This is the time of year when the Nanaimo Hornets really want to create some buzz. The Hornets RFC rugby club is in recruitment mode these days, and it’s looking for players at all levels – minis five and up, youths 12 to 18, men and women. Club president Darren Wicks said he’s even looking for masters men for the Yoos-to-Bees side. The new president said it’s important to bring in newcomers, and said the minis and youths can eventually feed into the adult divisions and keep the Hornets strong. One of the challenges of recruiting for rugby, he said, is the sport’s reputation. “There’s a huge myth that rugby is a really barbaric sport and it couldn’t be any further from the truth,” Wicks said. “I would say this is actually safer than some other sports that are in town now.” He said “back in the day” rugby might have been a rougher game. “It’s still a contact sport and it’s fast and it’s tough, but all the cheap stuff is coming out of the game now,” he said. This season, 2014-15, is a good time to capitalize on the sport’s momentum, Wicks said. Canada’s runnerup performance at the

recent women’s World Cup brought in some new viewership, and the men’s World Cup next year could do the same. Even little kids can sign up to play rugby, as tackling isn’t introduced until the youth levels, Wicks said. “A lot of it is just playful stuff,” he said. “Ball handling and fun games. The Nanaimo Hornets get to start rugby season right, with matches against their friends and rivals, the Cowichan Piggies. Game times aren’t finalized, but the men and women will both play Sept. 13 at Pioneer Park. The Hornets women won the B.C. Div. 2 title last spring, the Hornets men are perennial league finalists, and both sides expect to be right in the mix again. “We’re a competitive club, so no matter what, we’re always going to be striving to try and win the championship,” said Marshall. Wicks said those winning ways motivate all the Hornets. “The drive in the club, it goes right through,” he said. Right through to the women, right through to the juniors, everybody’s on a high from those wins.” sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Clippers add two coaches The Nanaimo Clippers are going to have a bunch of energetic players skating into training camp next week, and the team has added new energy behind the bench, too. T h e c i t y ’s j u n i o r hockey club announced Blake Clement as the new assistant coach and Clayton Smith as the new strength and conditioning coach. Clement played junior A in Grande Prairie under head coach Mike Vandekamp. “We agreed on a lot of things, so I think that transition’s going to be really easy in that way, because we see the game in the same way,” Clement said. The new assistant doesn’t have coaching experience, but Vandekamp said the junior A level is about building experience. “He’s a real passionate, hard-working young man and I think that example he’s going to set for our players will be fantastic,” the head coach said. Smith operates Prime Sport Performance and Kinesiology and is a former Clippers defenceman. “It’s nice to be back, and that was one thing that really drove me to help out with the Clippers organization, is to give back to a program that’s given me so much,” Smith said. The Clippers open training camp Tuesday (Sept. 2). sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo player’s walk-off hit wins Westerns BY DAN KINVIG Black Press
It’s a moment that these bantam baseball champs will remember for the rest of their lives. The Abbotsford Angels battled their way to the championship game Aug. 17 at the Western Canadian championship tournament
in Spruce Grove, Alta., and were locked in a 1-1 tie with Sherwood Park. The inning? Bottom of the seventh (the last regulation inning at this level). The bases? Loaded. Outs? Two. Up to the plate stepped Jayden Marsh, a pick-up player from Nanaimo who had started the game on the
mound for the Angels and pitched four strong innings. Marsh ripped a line drive between the third baseman and the shortstop to drive in the game-winning run. His teammates came sprinting out of the dugout, helmets flying, to mob Marsh at first base. “I touched first base and the dog-pile was already on
top of me,” Marsh said. “It was awesome. It was one of the greatest feelings I’ve ever had.” Coach Scott Pankratz said that winning on a walk-off hit makes the championship even more memorable. “We set goals at the beginning of the season, and to see them right through to the end is great,” he said.

Labour Day rooted in workers’ rights
I
UnIOnS fOUght for rights that are now standard. By Karl yu The News bulleTiN
While Labour Day means a long weekend to many, the origins of the statutory holiday are rooted in workers’ rights. Eight-hour work days and worker safety are rights unions have fought for and while Ellen Oxman, president of the Nanaimo, Duncan and District Labour Council, said the overall number of on-the-job deaths has gone down, in some areas it has risen. “Unfortunately we’re still seeing deaths on the job, particularly in B.C.,” said Oxman. “The numbers have gone down, but certain areas haven’t and that is young workers. There are actually more young workers killed for the last year of statistics, being 2012, than there were [in 2011] and that is frightening, it’s alarming.” She said labour unions must ensure that young workers are being educated about their rights and rules

are enforced. Some companies try to do things as cheaply as possible and she said when that occurs, safety and safety education go by the wayside. There are rules about mandatory education for safety, according to Oxman. “Unfor tunately, when those regulations aren’t
upheld, we have tragedy but there isn’t any consequence to the tragedy, so employers that aren’t protecting their workforce need to be charged, fined, whatever that looks like, to enforce the rules that do exist,” she said. Labour Day, Oxman said, is a way to remember all
that workers and society have gained. “Labour has always worked hard regarding safety in the workplace and that affects everyone regardless of whether you’re a union member or not,” said Oxman. “There are issues that span all of society and we work to make society a better place – a fair wage, a living wage, benefits, all of those things go into improving society and labour works hard everyday to make sure those things happen and they’re protected,” she said. Doug Routley, NanaimoNorth Cowichan MLA, has a background in the logging industry, and said there is much value in what Labour Day represents. “We live in a society that is built on its standards of rights and freedoms and the right to assemble and the right to form associations is an integral right in our society that empowers unions to form, just as with the teachers fighting for conditions that benefit our children, so do paramedics, so do firefighters, so do forest workers for conditions that benefit worker safety,” said Routley. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Union movement continues to work toward positive social change By Stephanie Smith This spring, I had the honour of being elected to lead B.C.’s most diverse union. The more than 67,000 women and men of the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union work in all areas of the province, in a wide variety of roles, making a real difference in their communities. From childcare to child protection, preventative health care to palliative
care, social work to corrections, and so much more – what our members share is a dedication to working together for the benefit of all British Columbians. Union members want to belong to a movement that can make progressive new policies that B.C. needs, such as $10 a day childcare, a reality. That’s why this Labour Day, I’d like to also look forward and talk about what we still have left
to do. Our province and country are faced with growing income inequality – including a gender wage gap of 26 per cent that is embarrassing. Our young people have the distinction of being the first generation that will be worse off economically than the one that came before. But the labour movement is in a unique position to change all of that. Hundreds of British Columbians lift
themselves out of poverty each year by joining unions to achieve collective bargaining rights at their workplace. The wage increases they gain by working together go right back into their local economies, invigorating communities across the province. The increased
together to demand that vital services be publicly available to everyone – not just those who can afford them – we’ll have a whole new set of victories to celebrate each year at the end of August. u Stephanie Smith is president of the BCGEEU.

Celebrating the 8 hr workday
As a lawyer practising in employment and human rights law, I know how important unions have been in securing workers’ rights and the important role unions continue to play. Thank you to all the union activists who came before us, devoting endless time and effort to give us the weekend, equal pay for equal work, universal health care, pensions, and much more. We owe you a lot.
