Abattoir left high and dry Market collapsed after government changes ministries

By Carole Rooney Free Press

A local agriculture operation owner says her business fell through the cracks when the Ministry of Agriculture took over abattoir inspections from the Ministry of Health in 2012. Elisabeth Karlen of XH Buffalo Ranch on South Green Lake says she was encouraged to upgrade the facility and to pursue licensing and permits for beef slaughter. She explains her issue is the whole process happened just months before 100 Mile House was given a mobile red-meat slaughterhouse – effectively cutting off her beef business market. Their buffalo slaughter falls under its provincial B licence for beef and bison now, but to get the permit

Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett visited the XH Buffalo Ranch with Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick on Oct. 30, 2012, shortly after it got its licence and permits squared away. Barnett says nobody likes to put money into something that never happens, but adds she has “no idea” where the Karlens got the idea they would have an exclusive local slaughter market. “It was already up and operating when I went there.” There are “an awful lot” of people in that area who use a slaughter service, Barnett notes. “Maybe people don’t realize they are there because it was always advertised as a bison [business]. Military Police National Relay Ride stops for steak, dancing Carole Rooney Free Press

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #260-100 Mile House pulled out all the stops when it hosted a group of motorcycle riders participating in the Military Police National Relay Ride recently. Organizers put on a great dinner/dance event with live music to help further support their Military Police’s Fund for Blind Children and the Children’s Wish Foundation. Local Legion president Bob Wangensteen says 11 riders visited the South Cariboo during this side trip in the cross-country ride from Victoria to Gander, Newfoundland. Some of the Veteran UN-NATO Canada members and serving Armed Forces and Veterans who participate start on Vancouver Island and others join along the way, he notes. Wangensteen explains participants aren’t required to complete the entire journey, as each province has its own riders that hook up with the national riders. There were 26 riders when the group left Victoria, and they join up and leave as they can, as much of the money raised is through the registration fees, he notes. “They had five national riders with them [that will] carry on to Newfoundland, but they turned them over in Jasper to the Alberta branch.” Wangensteen met the riders at the Legion in Clearwater on his own

motorcycle and escorted them to 100 Mile House. “Clearwater did a real good job; it put on a hot beef sandwich lunch.” The riders pay for their own meals, as per the Royal Canadian Legion rules, he explains. However, Wangensteen notes the riders are always grateful when they stop in 100 Mile House, as members are always great hosts. “The Legions in B.C. are the only Legions in Canada that support this ride. They provide meals – lunch or supper or whatever – all the way through the province.” The local Legion president

explains he communicated by e-mail with the group’s point rider, Tony Brooks, to invite them for a stopover. “[Brooks] said ‘we appreciate the help the Legions are giving, but we can only eat so many hamburgers and hotdogs’. I said ‘that’s fine, how about a nice steak dinner’? So, they were all jazzed to come for that.” All the riders and the crowd that turned out to support the event clearly had a great time, with a lot of dancing, an all-local “fabulous” dinner and the band, Perfect Match, which is “always really good,” he says. “Sue Dumont, Shirley Dupuis and

Elsie Urquhart did just a fantastic job with it – and with all the home baking for dessert, all the pies and cakes and everything.” Wangensteen’s wife surprised him with a cake for his 62nd birthday during the riders’ thank-you presentation. “We had about 60 people turn out, which is a pretty good house for us.” Wangensteen says he was pleased to see the event’s donation box collected about $410 for the charity – an average contribution of almost $7 from each person in attendance, on top of the $15 ticket price that covered the dinner/dance.

don’t know. I know a couple of people that went there because they had no other place to go.” Ministry of Agriculture media representative Robert Boelens says the mobile abattoir in 100 Mile House came about as a result of the province’s “extensive” meat-inspection system consultation process from 2010 to November 2012. Ministry staff worked with the licensee, community and local gov-

ernment throughout the process, he adds. “The South Cariboo had a high demand for a local slaughter solution and a mobile abattoir was identified as the best possible solution.” As a result, a provincially-licensed, mobile red-meat abattoir was stationed and is now operational in 100 Mile House, and helping meet the demand for local meats, Boelens explains. However, Karlen says she didn’t continue with the upgrades blindly,

and repeatedly asked government representatives about a 100 Mile House business regaining slaughter capacity, and was told the local facility would “never get a permit” again. “We were told from two or three different places in the Ministry of Health that they will never operate again, under the current conditions, to slaughter cattle. Then, it changed from Ministry of Health and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to the Ministry of Agriculture, and they provided this mobile slaughterhouse.”

By the spring of 2012, the South Cariboo Meat Co-op and its plans for a local abattoir had collapsed, and there was no indications to her that anyone was working on another one, she adds. Karlen says the basic issue is XH Buffalo Ranch would not have put its own hard-earned money into upgrades had it known government’s intention to return slaughter capacity to 100 Mile House. “My problem is they should have told us.”

Strike preempts school start

By Carole Rooney Free Press

Pending a last-minute resolution to the teachers’ strike, school won’t begin today (Sept. 3) as scheduled. Many schools and other district sites in School District #27 (SD27) are once again back behind the picket lines with the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) continuing its full withdrawal of teaching services. All SD27 schools will remain closed until further notice, along with most of the programs held in its local schools. Programs not running include StrongStart and before- and afterschool daycares. Follow the current bargaining updates

online at www.sd27. bc.ca. Meanwhile, some children’s activities at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre will help fill the education and activity void for some families this month. They include a Drama and Art Camp (Sept 8-12, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.), French Camp (Sept. 15-19, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.) and Multi-sport Camp (Sept. 22-26, 8:30 a.m.4:30 p.m.), all of which

may be attended on a daily or a weekly basis. There are also other fall sessions and pre-

school programs, so call Canlan Ice Sports at 250-395-1353 for more information.

Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod, middle,
visited 100 Mile House on Aug. 25 to meet with local residents. Garry Babcock, left, Barb Hooper, Dale McIsaac, John Dixon and Patty Tawiyaka joined McLeod at the local A&W Restaurant. One topic of discussion was the Agricultural Growth Act (Bill C-18). It received its second reading in June and amends federal agricultural and agri-food laws, which is a concern to some farmers.

Agricultural bill focus of visit

Voters voiced a variety of concerns with Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo MP Cathy McLeod at meetings in 100 Mile House and 108 Mile Ranch recently, which the MP says were “a very beneficial couple days.” While residents in 108 Mile Ranch on Aug. 26 focused on topics, such as natural resource development and the Senate, residents in 100 Mile House on Aug. 25 spoke about things, such as benefits for seniors and handed McLeod a petition, which the MP will table when Parliament reconvenes in September, regarding their opposition to an omnibus agriculture bill currently before a parliamentary committee. The Agricultural Growth Act, or Bill C-18, received mix reviews when it was introduced in the House of Commons last

December. It amends a number of federal agricultural and agri-food laws, which is a concern to residents Barbara Hooper and Patty Tawiyaka who gave McLeod the petition signed by close to 300 local people and visitors of the South Cariboo Farmers’ Market. Critics of the legislation say it will devastate farmers’ ability to save, sell and reuse seeds, while giving control of seed royalties to large corporations, such as Monsanto and Dow Chemical. Proponents say the bill will modernize the agri-food industry in Canada, stimulate investment and help development new, superior varieties of seeds for Canadian farmers. “How can we support our farmers when their financial needs come second to big corporations?” asks Hooper. “It’s a complicated issue. Cathy McLeod told us she had been

the farmer’s ability in terms of seed usage. “It will not impact [farmers’] ability around seeds,” she says of the bill. “I indicated to them I will continue to watch the issue.” Bill Sundhu, newly-appointed NDP candidate for Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo, says there are likely good and bad aspects in Bill-C18, but he criticized the Agricultural Growth Act as part of a “disturbing trend” from the Conservative government that restricts “democratic participation” through use of omnibus bills, which typically cover multiple unrelated topics at once. “The Conservatives are reckless and seem all too willing to sell out farmers and the Canadian economy. “The democratic process is much better served and better legislation would emerge if this bill had been split. It is important for all farmers and legislators to carefully examine its contents and be heard.” In response, McLeod says Sundhu’s comment about the omnibus bill is “absurd.” “This is an agricul-

ture bill focused on important agriculture issues.” The MP adds she will, along with the petition, take some of the suggestions she received in 100 Mile House back

to Ottawa. “Summer is an ideal time for members of Parliament to get out and really connect and understand the issues in the different communities within the riding.”

THE GIVER

THE EXPENDABLES 3

Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites

Sylvestor Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Dolph Lundgren,

The haunting story of THE GIVER centers on Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. The film is based on Lois Lowry’s beloved young adult novel of the same name, which was the winner the 1994 Newbury Medal and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

The team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill... or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables - but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

he Cariboo Connector Program is extremely important for industry in Northern British Columbia and families who rely on Highway 97 for their livelihoods. Four-laning Highway 97 between Cache Creek and Prince George supports economic growth not only in the North, but throughout the entire province. The oil and gas industry is growing, the Port of Prince Rupert is booming and we're building a liquefied natural gas industry. The improvements we're making to the Cariboo Connector will significantly improve the flow of goods and services between the Lower Mainland and the Southern Interior, and the central areas of the province. In 2007, we announced the Cariboo Connector Program to four lane Highway 97 between Cache Creek and Prince George. The first phase involved an investment of $240 million over five years. ties. The local Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC) was chosen as one of the 12 BC Early Years Centres in British Columbia that will help support families with children six years and under. The CFEC is elated about getting this money because its goal from the beginning has been to help families with young children get as much support as possible. It is this time in their lives that they will develop and learn the most, so it is crucial they are given as much support, encouragement and information as possible. It is vitally important for young families to have the services so moms and dads learn that positive parental interaction with their children early in life pays huge dividends as they grow older and start going to school. The CFEC is going to receive $52,000 from the Provincial Office for the Early Years for this fiscal year as part of a $5.5-million investment over three years. The centre already has a lot of programs in place, so the extra funding will not only upgrade their programs, but it will also provide more services for families with children in the zero to six age group. One only needs to see the smiles of joy on the faces of the staff, parents and youngsters during these programs to realize the time, effort and money put into these sessions are building stepping blocks to help create loving and caring parents and children. The ability to reach out to the communities of Lac la Hache, Bridge Lake, Lone Butte, 108 Mile Ranch and Forest Grove has the CFEC management and staff members jumping up and down with excitement. It has long been their goal to be able to stretch out to the outlying communities to support young families that are not able to travel back and forth to participate in the programs that are being offered in 100 Mile House. Now, the South Cariboo mobile Early Years Centre will be able to travel to these communities and offer programs, including the popular drop-in playgroup Wiggle and Shake, which is a parent-participation play group with special focus on physical, social and emotional development. This contact will lead to discussion about what each community needs in terms of services. How important is this new Early Years Centre? CFEC executive director Lisa De Paoli says the “long-term goal is to reduce the number of children in the South Cariboo who are physically, emotionally and socially vulnerable entering kindergarten from more than 100 children a year to zero.”

“We acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Canadian Periodical Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage.”

Governments must control themselves To the editor: Re: "B.C. back in black, deep in debt (B.C. Views, July 23). Tom Fletcher’s column on B.C.’s operating budget and debt touches on a balance that must be examined. Some capital investments are made to reduce operating cost – some of the new

building costs at Royal Jubilee Hospital does that, for example. Some improve reliability – the earthquake resistant fire hall in View Royal for example. Some add capacity – sometimes to meet demand, sometimes “just because.” In your household, there is a limit based

100 Mile House gas prices highest To the editor: In June of this year, we did a road trip from 100 Mile House to Manitoba and then down in to the United States, visiting Montana and Wyoming, travelling a distance in excess of 5,200 kilometres. When we left 100 Mile House, the price of regular gasoline was $1.43.9 per litre at the local gas stations. Travelling across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, we paid from $1.22 to $1.31.9 per litre. In the U.S., converting the U.S. gallon to litres, we paid 88 to 92 cents per litre. In a recent 100 Mile House Free Press article, our MLA Donna Barnett reportedly blamed the high price of fuels on supply and demand. She did not address the fact that fuel prices in 100 Mile House are historically the highest anywhere. Perhaps it is time for the Consumer Protection groups to audit the practices of the local petroleum distributors. Jack Ross Horse Lake

on income. Similarly in business, borrowing has to be paid back – companies often get into financial trouble from debt, such as the dysfunctional Pacific Western Airlines culture in its expanded life as Canadian Airlines. Politicians do pay some attention because credit rating agency evaluations increase cost of borrowing.

Occasionally one reforms, as the profligate Bob Rae did in Ontario after getting the province into financial trouble. Governments must cut activities. The B.C. government has not addressed barriers to employment created by its quotas in agriculture and transportation, for example. It continues to

spend on handouts to moochers, including companies that won’t invest in their own capability by training employees. And it spends on public relations, as if most voters believe much of it. At the same time, government must protect against initiation of force. The NDP added an additional cost barrier

to individuals seeing justice – court costs. The B.C. “Liberals” have not handled criminals and mentally ill people well, and we can expect from their history of excusing behaviour that the NDP will not when they gain power again. Voters in B.C. have an opportunity to reduce operational spending by insisting on cutting activities, such as inter-

ference with honest people’s attempt to build and earn, endless reports, and fancy flower beds. I advocate the savings be put into the reason for government – protecting individuals against initiation of force, which at the municipal level is by policing. Keith Sketchley Saanich

Outrageous tax increase for pool

To the editor: I don’t begrudge paying a reasonable amount of tax for recreation; however, there is a point where taxation becomes a bit ridiculous. The multi-milliondollar pool complex being proposed by the South Cariboo Aquatic Society would create an estimated $15.1-million debt and property owners will have to shoulder the majority of that debt if approved. The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) has indicated it will increase property taxes by $135 per $100,000 of the assessed property value.

It’s an easy calculation! If your property is assessed at $200,000 it will add $270 in tax the first year; $400,000.00 adds $540 more tax; and if you own a $600,000 property, it will add another $810 to your tax bill. Businesses could face $1,000 to $10,000 tax increases, and landlords will pass that cost on to renters. While a pool may be on a buyers like/ want list, employment opportunities, property prices, reasonable property taxes, and security of investment will likely

be a higher priority. Without industry, job creation and development, this area will continue to be depressed economically, and jacking up property taxes by 20-25 per cent to pay for a multi-mil-

lion-dollar pool won’t help matters for property owners or for real estate markets. People on fixed incomes already have enough problems maintaining their homes and a sense of independence

without the CRD and District of 100 Mile House burdening them further with an outrageous property tax increase. Larry Badke 100 Mile House

Reader salutes volunteers To the editor: I would like to say thank-you to the first responders who, often in the middle of the night, are willing to attend to whatever emergency the siren at the 108 Mile Ranch Volunteer Fire Department hall calls them to. I am usually awakened by the siren and my prayers immediately go to keeping the first responders safe on

the roads. Next, I ask our Lord to be with those who require help. We are fortunate as a community to have folks who will unselfishly reach out to help others in distress. I wish to salute them all. Joanne Hirshfield 108 Mile Ranch

here was an uproar in the British Columbia legislature this spring when Transportation Minister Todd Stone went ahead with $19 million in cuts to low-usage coastal ferry routes. The plan had been laid out in detail before last year’s election. It targeted sailings where ridership was in the low teens or even single digits. On some sailings, the Transport Canada-mandated crew outnumbered the passengers. Despite the cries of doom, most of the sailing reductions have been managed – with one glaring exception. The Discovery Coast Circle Tour route saw its ferry from Port Hardy to Bella Coola replaced, using the smallest vessel in the BC Ferries fleet – the open-decked Nimpkish. This move wasn’t a direct response to low usage, a chronic issue with some of the minor route sailings along the coast. It was to avoid ordering a replacement for the Queen of Chilliwack, which sailed directly between Port Hardy and Bella Coola.

this way: “At the end of the day, my assessment is that the Nimpkish is a good tourism product if tourists are made fully aware as to the type of service it provides. If correct expectations are set, I believe the Nimpkish can be marketed as a valuable tourism component of the Discovery Coast Circle Tour. “The decision to do this rests squarely on the shoulders of the tourism industry and tourism operators who need to decide whether or not they want this service to work, to grow and to be viable in order to capture a share of the thousands of international tourists looking for exactly the kind of adventure the Nimpkish provides.” Got that, Discovery Coast tourism folks? If this milk run doesn’t work next year, it will be your fault. Heck, the Nimpkish has free snacks and drinks for your 10-hour voyage, much of it in the dark. the province Carey Price honoured by Anahim Lake community WILLIAMS LAKE - In town to promote his new role as First Nations Ambassador for the Breakfast Club of Canada, Price was excitedly received by his biggest fans: the Ulkatcho community. Joined by representatives from Air Canada, the Breakfast Club of Canada, and the Ulkatcho, Nuxalk, and Tsilhqot’in Nations, the afternoon began with the announcement that the Breakfast Club of Canada, in partnership with Air Canada, the Ulkatcho First Nation and the school district, would be providing a breakfast program for the local schools indefinitely. Known for his laid-back and humble demeanor, Price was emotional when he was asked to address the crowd, answering questions on everything from his favourite memories about growing up in Anahim to his advice for local youth. When asked what message he had for the kids in the community, Price said he could relate. “I’ve been in your shoes and I really just have one message for you,” said Price. “I know what it’s like to grow up in a remote place. If you get an opportunity, make the most of it. It doesn’t have to be hockey, just use your best qualities. Do your best and opportunities will materialize from there.” Tense times in Rayleigh after search for armed man KAMLOOPS -Police were on high alert across Kamloops for about 45 minutes on Wednesday, Aug. 27, after receiving a report of a distraught man with three guns — a shotgun, a handgun and a semiautomatic rifle — potentially headed to a local bank. RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush said Mounties received a call just after 12:30 p.m. from a woman who said her husband left their Columbia Street house with a number of weapons. She told investigators her husband was upset because of banking issues earlier in the day. Based on what she relayed to police, Mounties placed all TD Canada Trust branches in Kamloops under lockdown. Just before 1:15 p.m., the suspect was arrested without incident at a relative’s home in Rayleigh. Bush gave no indication as to whether he was in possession of the firearms at the time of his arrest.

C ap sule C omments The banning of smoking in public places is starting to see positive changes in many areas of healthcare. One benefit is a 10% drop in the rates of pre-term births and childhood asthma where smoking bans have been initiated. Unfortunately, only 16% of the people of the world are covered by these nonsmoking laws and 40% of the world’s children are still exposed to second-hand smoke. A peptic ulcer is a breakdown in the protective lining of the stomach or part of the small intestine. In the “old days” prior to the 1970s, treatment consisted of dietary changes, lots of antacids and possibly even an operation. Today we know that most peptic ulcers are caused by the bacterium, H. Pylori. It infects 1 in 4 people but most don’t get an ulcer. Those who do can be treated with antibiotics and a powerful acidreducer. No more bland diets or surgery today! Pharmacists are asked about the benefits of eating garlic or supplements to help certain ailments. It has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years in India, China and Egypt. The current scientific evidence says it may possibly be effective for reducing high blood pressure, keeping arteries healthy, reducing the risk of colon, rectal and stomach cancer (if eaten raw). It is unlikely to help those with diabetes, peptic ulcers, high cholesteol or in preventing breast cancer. Some people say that garlic helps prevent the common cold. If it works for you, that’s great. There is not a lot of high quality evidence that this is so but the side effects are minimal if you take it. Our pharmacists can add a balanced perspective to many of the popular herbal treatments. There’s a lot of hype out there. We can add some common sense to it all. Consult your doctor, too.

100 Mile House RCMP members were dispatched to a report of a possible suicidal 44-year-old male who left his residence in a van on Aug. 25. While responding to this complaint, another call was received stating the same male had crashed a van into the front yard of a residence in the 5900 block of Highway 24 at Lone Butte causing considerable damage to the property. The man made comments that he would be igniting propane bottles if the police came for him. When police arrived, a perimeter was set up and some residences were evacuated. Negotiations with the male suspect were unsuccessful and the RCMP Emergency Response Team was activated. Around 10:50 p.m., the man was observed exiting the van and tried to evade police. He was

An Interlakes couple escaped with their two dogs but little else when a fire wiped out their home on Viewland Road on Aug. 26. Bob and Anna Lee Goheen, proprietors of the Interlakes Market and Sheridan Lake Store & Cafe, had less than a minute to make an exit after hearing a loud bang outside near their propane-fired generator and smoke and flames started to envelop their residence. There was a power outage in the area at the time due to a storm and it seems the propane tank powering the generator exploded. A fire inspector was scheduled to visit the scene on Aug. 29. “I thought it was a lightning strike,” Bob says of the explosion. “By the time we actually grabbed the dogs and ran for the door the smoke detector at the other end of the house

three-and-a-half minutes away.... There was no way I was risking anyone’s life going into a place I knew was empty.” The IVFD kept four members on scene overnight dousing hotspots. Diane Hopp, a neighbour for close to 10 years whose home is located about 100 feet from the Goheen home, took photos of the scene and praised the response by firefighters. Anna Lee escaped in only her socks. She says it was a “shocking” experience. “Your mind goes blank and you can’t even think to take anything. We just got out.” “I never want this experience for any-

body,” she adds. “When you finally stand there, and you think, [you realize] you have nothing. All your personal stuff is gone.” The couple is currently living in a small apartment on top of the Sheridan Lake Store. They say the community has been very supportive in the wake of the fire. “You can’t believe the neighbourhood,” Bob says. “People down the road I’ve never met handed me their truck keys.” Adds Anna Lee: “I didn’t know we had this many friends.” Townsend says he’s very appreciative of the effort department members put into stopping the fire.

Let's celebrate Literacy Day By Kimberly Vance-Lundsbye C e l e b r a t e International Literacy Day this Sept. 8 by visiting the library, trying a new recipe and reading an extra book to your children. Literacy is often thought of as a person’s ability to read, but it is so much more. Literacy is about a person’s ability to understand and use information. Modern technology offers a helping digital hand. In a matter of seconds, we can clarify the rules of a classic board game or get an explanation for a new-to-you cooking term. However, there is a flip side. How do we know what we read on the Internet is reliable There is an informa-

tion overload that we have to sift through with the most powerful computers we have access to – our brains. We may be able to buy a new laptop, but we only have one brain so put it to good use! Learning doesn’t stop when we leave the classroom and many people will argue that’s when the real learning begins. Learn with your children or grandchildren or better yet, let them teach you. Being lifelong learners and inspiring the same in the younger generation is a cornerstone for building and maintaining a healthy community. There are many people in the South Cariboo area working to make their commu-

nity a healthy one. From Canim Lake to 70 Mile House, there are committed people coming together and collaborating to make positive change and putting in the effort to hold on to what is valued. Access to education and sharing information amongst all community members is a key factor in a healthy community. Strong literacy skills allow people to understand this information and know how to use it. With higher literacy skills, people are better able to make informed choices, think critically, and contribute to the

solution. This Sept. 8 on International Literacy Day take a few moments to consider the role literacy plays in your life, in your community, and in the world. Cariboo-Chilcotin Partners for Literacy offers free programs and services to help people in the South Cariboo reach their learning goals. Check out www.caribooliteracy.com or call Mel at 250-945-4199 for more information. Kimberly VanceLundsbye is the Immigrant Settlement Services co-ordinator.

However, the Fall Fair is going to be rooted in the tradition of old-time fairs where country and city folks come together to share in the bounty of autumn. Visitors and participants alike are going to enjoy the displays of produce, crafts, art and hobbies for various age divisions. There will be a variety of exhibits for folks to admire. The awards presentation starts at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 5. A new attraction to the Fall Fair this year is the West Coast Lumberjack Show, and people are going to enjoy the speed, accuracy and endurance of these lumberjacks on Saturday. The show will feature chainsaw carving, axe throwing, springboard chopping, tree climbing, the Jack ‘n Jill cross-cut sawing and the hot saw race. The interactive West Coast Lumberjack Show runs three times on Sept. 6. Folks won’t want to miss the white-knuckle action of the professional bull riding event that returns to the Outriders arena. The top riders in British Columbia will be trying to make the eight-second ride on some great bucking bulls supplied by local stock contractors – C-Plus of 150 Mile, and Diamond D of 100 Mile. The Professional Bull Riders event starts at 6 p.m. on Sept. 5, and 1

How can I stay within my home improvement budget? Home improvement projects range from small scale undertakings that can be tackled in a single weekend to large remodels that can take several months to complete. While no two projects are the same, every home improvement project demands that homeowners dip into their pockets and spend some money. Much like the scale of projects varies greatly, so, too, do the financial commitments required of homeowners to make those projects a reality. But no matter the size of the project, homeowners can find ways to stretch their budgets without sacrificing the quality of their improvements. • Do your homework. Before you decide to make changes to your home, it’s best to first do some research into any potential projects you’re considering. Many homeowners have decided to dive into a project before they fully realize its scope and cost, and going in blind can bust a budget, turning what might have seemed like a relatively simple project into a money pit. • Build unforeseen expenses into your budget. Another way to stay within your budget is to include budget-busting unforeseen expenses into the budget from the get-go. Whether you’re doing the project yourself or paying a contractor, nearly every home improvement project will present some unforeseen, and costly, hurdles. • Get to work. If you’re hiring a contractor, speak to him or her before signing a contract to see if there is anywhere you can pitch in to keep the labor costs low. You might be able to pitch in during the demolition phase, saving the cost of paying your contractor’s workers to tear down walls or remove debris you can just as easily remove yourself. • Determine if piecemeal is the most affordable option. Sometimes it makes sense to tackle one project at a time, while other times you might want to combine projects to save on the cost of materials.

108 Mile an inspirational stop for Quesnel bikers Gaven Crites Free Press

Quesnel cyclists Rob Gardner and Amarjit Singh “Archie” Sull raised $31,393.58 for the BC Children's Hospital in July. The pair, riding under the name “Cycling 530,” started their eight-day, 682-kilometre bike ride from Quesnel to Whistler to Vancouver on June 30, and on July 1, they rolled into 108 Mile Ranch. Archie, riding ahead of Rob – and also his father Gurnek “Gary” Sull following in a truck donated by Cariboo Ford for the trip – smelt popcorn and fried onions and saw fire trucks at the 108 Mile Heritage Site. They decided to investigate and stumbled upon a Canada Day celebration. They walked around and started talking to people. Archie's daughter, Jaden, was treated for epilepsy and seizures at BC Children's Hospital in the past. He shared his family's story about their time there and other people shared their own about the Vancouver-based medical facility that specializes in children's medicine, which has touched the lives of many. “The next thing you know they had us on stage and cutting a cake,” explains Archie, looking back on the adventure and their stop in the South Cariboo. “The biggest impact was the people that gave us hugs and saying, 'Thank you for doing what you’re doing'. “108 Mile was kind of the turning point for us. [We realized] what we're doing is worth it.” (Archie also mentions the generosity of Tanya Lane, manager of Super 8 in 100 Mile House, which donated a room to Cycling 530 en route to BC Children's Hospital.)

Quesnel residents Amarjit “Archie” Singh Sull, right, and Rob Gardner stopped at the 108 Mile Heritage Site during a Canada Day celebration on July 1 on their way to Vancouver. The pair, under the name “Cycling 530,” raised $31,393.58 for the BC Children's Hospital.

Gary matched the $15,000 or so Rob and Archie raised. Archie said his dad is a “community guy,” and he mentions different local causes he has

contributed to in the past. It seems the generosity gene was passed down to his son. “You hold on to your values,”

Archie acknowledges. “Some of those old values of service and giving back are there, and we hope we can keep passing them on.” On the road, traffic was a big challenge for the guys at times, especially on Highway 97 in the 100 Mile House area where logging trucks fly by regularly and generate big gusts of wind. They rode in the rain for a while after Whistler on their final leg of the trip, but for the most part, the weather was good and the traffic was respectful of the cyclists, and the scenery was great, Archie says. “You don't realize what British Columbia has to offer until you’re actually on a bike. It's the best way to travel.” The ride back north to Quesnel from Vancouver, this time in a truck with his family following the cheque presentation at BC Children's Hospital on July 7, was a surreal moment for Archie. Retracing their route northward through beautiful B.C. countrysides, climbing the same hills and looking out at the terrain, he felt shivers. He reflected on what they accomplished and let it sink in. “The biggest thing is: 'Wow, did we really do that? Did we really raise this much for the hospital. Wow, we got it done.'” Smoke from dozens of forest fires choked communities around the province this summer, so there was a period near the end of July when Archie couldn't ride his bike as he planned. Hopefully, this isn't the case next summer, when Cycling 530 plans another fundraising trip to BC Children's Hospital. More riders are talking about making the journey with Archie and Rob. “We're more than excited.”

Wild rides at South Cariboo Fall Fair Powerful animals, B.C.'s top riders at local PBR event

The bucking of the bulls whips into 100 Mile House, Sept. 5-6. For the second year in a row, a professional bull riding event is coming to the South Cariboo Community Fall Fair. “Last year, the community really showed up and helped a lot,” says Dave Atkinson of Diamond D Rodeo Bulls, which along with C-Plus Rodeos of 150 Mile, are supplying the 70 or so bucking bulls for the two-day event. “We're going to have 20 of the best bull riders in B.C. here.”

Friday (Sept. 5) will see the younger bucking bulls taking the contestants for a ride, with the more powerful bulls set to buck in the finals on Saturday. “These bulls are feeling pretty frisky; they're pretty wild; they're going to run a few guys over,” Atkinson says. “I think all of us bull fighters are going to get a pretty good test out there.” Atkinson mentions “Sorcerer” and “Lunar” as two great bulls to look out for. (Sorcerer is the bull in the posters around town.)

C-Plus bull “Riddick” is another one to watch. “He's amazing. He gets four, five feet in the air and pulls guys down on his head and knocks them out. If somebody rides him, they're going to be 90 points.” Wild horse racing and barrel racing are also part of the event. Admission, which includes admission to the Fair, is $15 for adults, $10 students, and $5 for children and seniors. The fun at the 100 Mile Outrider Grounds starts at 6 p.m. on Sept. 5 and 1 p.m. on Sept. 6.

Obituaries BERNERT Frank

1936-2014

Frank Bernert, 78, passed away the morning of Thursday, August 28th, 2014 at his home at the 108 Mile Ranch after succumbing to kidney failure. He leaves behind his loving wife, of 49½ years, Judy; his sons: Philip (fiancée Nancy) and Frank (Jr.), and his many nieces and nephews. Born March 2, 1936 in Pancevo, Serbia (Yugoslavia), Frank came to Canada in 1953, where he spent eight years in Sinclair Mills, B.C. and taught himself English and made many close friends. In 1961 he moved to Vancouver; it was there, at the local YMCA, where he met his future wife. Frank and Judy were married in 1965 and began their family shortly thereafter. In 1973, they moved to the 108 Mile Ranch where Frank worked at Weldwood as a millwright for 20 years, made more friends and discovered his love of gardening, woodworking, astronomy, and square dancing. After retiring, Frank and Judy enjoyed their time as “Snowbirds” travelling to Southern California for more than 20 years. Frank also discovered his hidden talents for cross stitching, making wine, and became obsessed with watching science fiction television, especially Star Trek, and making converts of anyone who stopped by. At Frank’s request, there will be no memorial service, but he does wish that all who knew him will tip one back and toast his memory. If you could use one phrase to sum up Frank’s life, it would be his favoured saying “What you see is what you get” In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local Palliative Care Program, Canadian Red Cross or the charity of your choice. The family would also like to extend its thanks to Dr. Geerts and staff, and to all those at Interior Health, Palliative Care Program, Home Support and Community Nursing Services who provided much appreciated care and support. 100 Mile Funeral Service Ltd. entrusted with the arrangements. 250-395-3243 Condolences can be sent to the family care of 100milefuneralservice@gmail.com

WATKINS Nicol (Nick) Ashforth 1939-2014

Nicol (Nick) Ashforth Watkins, who has died aged 75 in Vernon B.C., was a Renaissance man. He spent his working life as a teacher and administrator. He was passionate about public education, feeling that a country was only as good as the education of its young. After retirement, he spent 15 years as director and president of the Caravan Farm Theatre. He supported and worked for the development of the Haugen Medical Group. He attended the Okanagan Symphony for 25 years; loved opera, jazz, and other music. He was an avid runner, played cricket, soccer, rugby, and golf. He enjoyed skiing and hiking, especially in the Rocky Mountains. When not engaged in the above pursuits, he loved to discuss politics and philosophy. He was a lifelong supporter of the NDP and believed in private enterprise with a social conscience. Retirement gave Nick and Dagmar the opportunity to discover many parts of the world. Nick was born in London, England to Frank and Dorothy Watkins. He is survived by his sister Judith Newman and her family, and by the Family Rippitsch, in Austria. He married in 1964 Hannelore Dagmar Watkins and they have one son, Brendan and daughter–in-law, Cheryl. Nick will be lovingly remembered by his family as well as friends and colleagues. A Celebration of Life will be held at Armstrong Bible Chapel (2145 Rosedale Avenue, Armstrong, B.C.) on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (47 Squire Bakers Lane, Markham, ON L3P 3G8). Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family at www.MyAlternatives.ca

REITA GEORGETTE BARON September 8, 1952 – August 17, 2014

It is with great sadness that the family of Reita Georgette Baron announces her passing on August 17, 2014. Reita’s family and close friend Lester were by her side when she succumbed to a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on September 8, 1952 in Kamloops BC to Al and Margaret Hinsche, Reita spent a happy childhood with her four siblings on a ranch on Watch Lake Road near Lone Butte BC. She attended elementary school in Lone Butte and high school in 100 Mile House, BC. In April 1974 Reita married Frank Baron and moved to Likely which she quickly adopted as her new home and enjoyed being an integral part of the community. During Reita’s life she touched the hearts of many friends and associates who will miss her greatly. She worked as secretary/librarian for the Likely School until she moved to Williams Lake in 2006 so Shauna could enroll in high school there. She had an excellent reputation as a bookkeeper and worked for several companies in the Likely and Williams Lake areas. Her hobbies were many and she loved to spend time with nieces, Brityn and Taryn, sharing with them the many crafts she enjoyed. Reita is predeceased by her parents Al and Margaret Hinsche. She is survived by her daughter Shauna Speed, who was the love of her life, and her loving partner of twenty-five years, Norman Speed. Reita will be dearly missed by her sisters Pat Coukell of New Hazelton, BC, and Judy (Mark) Brekke of Kelowna, BC, brothers Lorne (Liz) Hinsche of Williams Lake, BC and George (Dianne) Hinsche of Sheridan Lake, BC. and sister-in-law Barb Jaager of Penticton, BC. Also to mourn her passing is her uncle, Walter (Joanne) Levick, aunt, Evelyn Townie and nieces and nephews Cliff Coukell, Gerald Coukell, Jennifer Walker, Jason Hinsche, Tasha MacDonald and their families and her special little rays of sunshine, nieces Brityn and Taryn Hinsche. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Magnuson for the compassionate care he gave Reita for many years and a very special thank you to the entire staff of Deni House. All of you are amazing and our family will always remember the special time we shared with Reita there. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Williams Lake Hospice Society, 517-6th Avenue North, Williams Lake, BC V2G 2G8 or the charity of your choice. A celebration of life will be held in Reita’s honour at 1:00 PM on September 20, 2014 at the Likely Community Hall, 6281 Rosette Lake Road, Likely, BC.

Fun, food to be had at Watch Lake Community Hall

By Mark McMillan For 15 years, the Watch Lake/Green Lake Business Association has been putting on a fun-filled evening in the Watch Lake Community Hall on the second Saturday in September.

over so well last year with her amazing guitar picking and singing. New to the Watch Lake stage this year will be 19-year-old Jason Ruscheinsky – a very talented upcoming singer song writer. They will each do a set of their own, then Jason

will team up with Leslie for one set, and all three entertainers will join together to make up the dance band. Our annual singer, Ernie Doyle, has had some hand surgery so won’t be able to play guitar but we’re hoping he’ll join in on the fun

and share that big boomin’ voice of his with us. His song choices of all the old country favourites seem like a must at Cariboo Country Night. Tickets are $25 (advance sales only please) and that includes all the entertainment and the steak dinner.

Folks can get them at Watch Lake Lodge, the 70 Mile General Store, and Meadow Springs Ranch. Ticket pickup can also be arranged in 100 Mile House by phoning 250-456-2425. Mark McMillan is a key organizer of this event.

HERE’S

WHAT’S

Hugh McLennan

This year that date is Sept. 13 and the Cariboo Country Night will definitely be an entertaining evening. Things start off with a cowboy concert at 5 p.m. Around 6:30, the steaks come off the barbecue and are served with all the trimmings to make one fantastic country-style meal. The cowboy concert resumes after dinner, and around 8:30 p.m., things liven up a bit as the dance gets underway. This year, the entertainment should once again be awesome. Hugh McLennan, voice of the Spirit of the West Radio Show, will make the trip to Watch Lake to share some cowboy stories, jokes, poetry, and songs. Leslie Ross from the 108 will be back by request as she went

100 Mile teacher Susan Soules has strong bond with former student, Special Olympian Tony Carter Gaven Crites Free Press

vehicle, a long way from town on Horse Lake Road with a handful of stray cats and dogs. Money was tight. For cash, Tony took his mom’s empties on his bike to Lone Butte, or traded them in town on his lunch break from school. Asked what he remembers about living here, Tony chokes-up, then answers. “It was good. I quite enjoyed it.” Susan says Tony was a big help to his mom. “She loved Tony. She was very proud of Tony.” Whatever the circumstance, Tony looks on the bright side, she says, adding that is what’s so

endearing about him – his positive outlook and his motivation to do more. “When you get to know Tony, he’s such a great man.” Susan, who now teaches at Mile 108 Elementary School and has two small twins with husband Corey Peterson, taught Tony between 1998 and 2001, when he relocated to the South Cariboo from Mission with his mom. When Susan wasn’t his teacher anymore, she told him it’s no longer “Ms. Soules,” you can call me Susan. “I said I will always be your friend.” It was bittersweet seeing Tony move back to Merritt after high school. Susan would miss him, and she worried what direction he would take. But she recognized there are more opportunities for him there, and, as sharp-minded and persevering as he is, he seems to be thriving. Everything about the Summer Games in Vancouver was “awesome,” Tony says. Next, he mentions going to Kamloops for a provincial floor hockey championship in February, and he’s looking forward to the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles in July 2015, which the Team BC soccer squad qualified for in Vancouver. Earlier this summer, Susan told Vancouver Sun reporter Yvonne Zacharias that Tony “is an angel on my shoulder.” Asked about that quote, Susan takes a moment and holds back tears and Tony smiles and does the same. “He’s just always looking out for me. He’s always concerned. He’s very kindhearted.” “Always,” Tony adds. “I’ve always been like that.”

elling their story, tears fall soon and often. Local teacher Susan Soules and former 100 Mile House student Tony Carter met at Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School when she was a special-education teacher in 1998. Susan was immediately drawn to the always energetic and cheerful Tony, and, 16 years later, that connection remains. Along with two teenage daughters, who grew up knowing Tony as being like a member of the family, Susan travelled to Vancouver in July to watch him compete as a member of the five-person Team BC soccer squad at the 2014 Special Olympics National Summer Games at the University of British Columbia. The 32-year-old Mission resident is an all-around athlete these days, doing all kinds of sports, like floor hockey, bowling, softball and track and field. On the soccer pitch, Tony is fast. “You’d watch him and he’d be ‘zipzip-zip’,” explains Susan, zigzagging her hand. “He was right ahead of the game, anticipating the next play. The energy at UBC was pretty surreal. I was pretty proud.” Team BC won gold. Tony brought the medal with him to 100 Mile House when he visited the Soules family in midAugust, something he does every year. He would also visit his mom, Diana Carter, who passed away last year, when she was alive, and he still sees his friends at the Cedar Crest Society for Community Living when he comes up. While he now leads an active and busy life in Mission, working for a downtown business association cleaning up the streets and volunteering at a thrift shop during the week, life in 100 Mile House was a struggle for Tony, who was born with fetal alcohol Local teacher Susan Soules and former student and current Special Olympian Tony Carter syndrome. of Jean Reynolds passing. Jean and her husband, Don, moved to Canim Lake in January 1972 to take over the resort that still bears their name today. Feisty and energetic, and above all engaging and hospitable, the couple quickly became part of the community’s beating heart. Jean taught kindergarten at

Forest Grove until 1996, and since then, had been active in the many clubs and groups of the Hawkins and Canim Lake communities. Through the last months of her illness, with the close and tender support of Don, she never lost her interest in others and the simple joy of engaging with visitors. Continued on B8

and YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. There’s a FOOD CRISIS in 100 Mile House. The South Cariboo Food Security Committee has put out a plea for food donations to support the hungry families and individuals in need this summer. Local gardeners with extra produce in their plots, and the general public through non-perishable donations, are being asked to help with this food crisis. Children, youth and families are challenged daily in having enough to eat, especially nutritious food. David Francey concert hit all the right notes Juno award-winner singer-songwriter appreciated venue, audience

108 Mile Ranch resident and musician Len Aune and his wife, Cathryn, brought Juno award-winning singer-songwriter-storyteller David Francey to 100 Mile House for a concert at Martin Exeter Hall on Aug. 20. It was a great evening, and the 170 people who attended the concert are glad they did. The Scottish-born former carpenter wove stories taken from his life experience into the evening’s performance. Through his stories and songs, both humorous and touching and always very human and real, David shared a piece of himself and his life with the audience, Len says. “It was reminiscent of spending an evening at home with a good friend who is a great storyteller and also happens to be one of Canada’s foremost songwriters.” Those in attendance were clearly impressed by the performance. Many remarked on what a lovely evening it was and how much they enjoyed it. They commented that they felt they got to know David in way that is not often part of a concert, Len adds. Here is a quote Len received by e-mail: “Last

night’s concert was such a wonderfully intimate and introspective musical evening. The beauty and calm was still there when I awoke.” David was accompanied by Mark Westberg on the acoustic guitar. Mark is touring with David to several venues in British Columbia and the United States during the next couple months, Len explains. “Mark’s playing is stunning to say the least – subtle and understated and truly a joy to listen to.” Len says David commented that Martin Exeter Hall was an excellent venue, and the audience was “super” - responding warmly and engaging in the spirit of the evening. “100 Mile House has the best place name in all of B.C.,” David says, adding he was delighted to visit the area and meet such friendly people. Although organizing the event was a leap of faith, Len and Cathryn say they are very pleased with the results of the evening and thank the people of the area for their support. “We would certainly do it again and will continue to look for similar opportunities to bring live world-class music to the community.”

David Francey, left, charmed the Martin Exeter Hall audience with songs and stories on Aug. 20. He was accompanied by Mark Westberg on acoustic guitar and together they provided a “wonderfully intimate and introspective musical evening.”

Deka community will dearly miss residents DEKA DISTRICT

Diana Forster 250 593-2155

An aura of sadness pervades Deka Lake at the moment. As if it wasn’t enough to lose Moira Davies who passed away Aug. 12, residents are now saying goodbye to three good friends

who are all leaving Deka at the same time: Marvel McCune, Ardise Newcombe and Joyce Rowe. All three have been pillars of society during their residence, and will be dearly missed. A farewell party was held Aug. 20, which, unfortunately, Marvel could not attend. Dozens of friends came to say good luck, and sample the delicious cake inscribed “Ardise, Joyce & Marvel: Best wishes on your new adventure.”
