Stopping conflict in South Sudan through non-violence BOB HALL Special to the West Kootenay Advertiser
When Selkirk College Instructor Randy Janzen traveled to South Sudan in June, it wasn’t to report on the looming humanitarian crisis caused by famine and civil war in that country. On the contrary, the Peace Studies Program instructor wanted to learn more about an exciting project where local and international professionals are organizing together to systematically seek ways to reduce violence in this war-torn country on the brink of famine. Janzen joined Nonviolent Peaceforce, an international organization that works in conflict areas around the world, to learn more about how this organization works on the ground to reduce violence. Their techniques are based on the model called “unarmed civilian peacekeeping.” “While military peacekeeping has been shown to be effective in reducing violence, utilizing specially trained unarmed civilians has been shown to be just as effective in reducing violence,” says Janzen. “Unarmed civilians are able to go even further in building lasting cultures of peace by breaking the cycle of violence so that guns and other arms are not viewed
as the only method to bring about justice and peace.” Solutions come from grassroots Unarmed civilian peacekeeping fulfills the same role as armed military peacekeepers do: preventing the violence between warring factions by providing a third party presence. Unarmed civilian peacekeeping involves the participation of local grassroots leaders, particularly women, to seek solutions to violence reduction. “Something happens that is measurably different when you engage with people to reduce violence without weapons,” says Janzen. “You open space for all members of a community to get involved, not just those who have access to weapons. Power and authority is spread out to include women, youth and civil society organizations.” South Sudan is located in northeastern Africa and is the continent’s youngest nation having gained independence from Sudan in 2011. It has suffered internal conflict since its independence with the most recent tensions erupting this past December having killed at least 10,000 people.

Continued from page 1
While in South Sudan, Janzen traveled with a team of four workers to an isolated village that was being inundated with internally displaced people from a neighbouring province who were trying to escape the civil war and food shortage. The complication was that the local community and the displaced community were from two rival ethnic groups, potentially creating a volatile situation. Janzen says the peace team quickly built relationships with both groups and then advocated with United Nations agencies to bring in more food supplies for the displaced people. They asked the local leaders if they could stay to help them ensure the safety of both communities and an invitation was extended from both sides for them to stay. Quelling Rumours and Ensuring Proper Communication Currently, Nonviolent Peaceforce has 80 professionals on the ground, half South Sudanese and half from around the world, including countries like Canada, Colombia, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Sierra Leone. These international teams use specific communication strategies to reduce tension between conflicting parties. Some strate-

gies include protective presencing where teams are placed in communities at risk of being attacked by armed groups. The groups also conduct a relatively straightforward practice called rumour control where they act as a communication conduit between parties in conflict. “All too often, violence occurs when one faction misinterprets the action of another faction,” says Janzen, who has taught Peace Studies at Selkirk College for four years. “Paranoia leads to all kinds of problems. By simply establishing nonpartisan lines of communication, violence has been shown to be reduced.” Community workshops on nonviolent conflict resolution are also a part of the work of Nonviolent Peaceforce. Participants are always very grateful to learn more about
nonviolent strategies, as revenge has become growing aspect of inter-ethnic strife in his country. One of the workshop facilitators told Janzen that elders are particularly suspicious of young people teaching them information, as wisdom traditionally comes from the elders. One of the elders then went onto say that learning about non-violent strategies “is the most important thing we need to learn.” Janzen was most inspired by the South Sudanese members of the peacekeeping groups. “They were very determined to help their brand new country transition into a safe and prosperous democracy,” he says. “I was told repeatedly by South Sudanese staff members that unarmed civilian peacekeeping was the most important component to creating a
culture of peace in their country. They told me to go back home and inform people on the important work the civilian peacekeeping teams are doing.” Janzen returned to Canada inspired and invigorated to promote the practice among Canadians. “I think most Canadians do not like the idea of war, yet at the same time we want to help other nations,” he says. “Unarmed civilian peacekeeping is demonstrated to be safe, cost effective, environmentally friendly and it works” Janzen hopes to use his experience to spearhead collaboration between Selkirk College’s Mir Centre for Peace and some international partners to develop a project in South Sudan that would measure the impacts of unarmed civilian peacekeeping on communities suffering from violence.

ural mineral form of lead sulphide, the principal source of lead, as well as silver. It was mined in abundance in this area. This part of the lake was previously known as Thumb Bay. As Milton Parent writes in Silent Shores and Sunken Ships: “Because of the bay’s peculiar shape in relation to the Arrow Lakes, the early explorers, or more likely surveyors, noticed when the maps were drawn it had the appearance of a giant thumb. Consequently, even on our earliest map, the site was named Thumb Bay.” The first mention of Thumb Bay is in George Dawson’s 1889 Report on a Portion of the West Kootanie [sic] District, British Columbia: “Thumb Bay … is an indentation in the east shore of the lake immediately south of the North-East Arm.” An undated newspaper story titled “An outline of Galena Bay history” in the Arrow Lakes Historical Society archives claims the name was changed when a post office was applied for and another Thumb Bay was discovered. However, no post office named Thumb Bay ever existed in Canada, and the Canadian Geographical Names Database doesn’t list a Thumb Bay (though there is one in Alaska). Furthermore, Galena Bay never did get a post office. However, a post office called Galena opened in 1889 southeast of Golden. It changed its name

to Spillimacheen in 1946. In 1897, the Lardeau Railway Co. was incorporated to build a railway from Galena Bay to Trout Lake and Camborne. They hired Victoria surveyor Thomas Harbridge Parr to lay out a townsite for a railway terminus at Galena Bay between Payne and Jennings creeks called Rosenheim, honouring Henri Rosenheim, a director of the Lillooet, Fraser River, and Cariboo Gold Fields Ltd. otherwise known as the HornePayne company, which invested in the railway. The first mention of the townsite was an ad for the Rosenheim Hotel in the Kootenay Mail on November 21, 1896. By mid-1897, 40 acres had been cleared and crews were at work on an additional 40 acres. However, work on the railway was suspended in September and the hotel

News Castlegar boy joins six other youth on kidney donor waiting list LESLIE HASTAIN West Kootenay Advertiser
After a perfectly normal pregnancy and delivery, a routine home visit from a Health Nurse revealed that Castlegar baby Zach Tremblay was not thriving. The nurse suggested that he be taken to see a doctor as soon as possible. Only a few hours after bloodwork was done the family received the devastating news that Zach had renal (kidney) failure and immediate intervention was required. An air ambulance was called to take the newborn to BC Children’s Hospital, but was unable to land because of bad weather. Almost before they knew what was happening, the family bundled the baby in the car and drove to Vancouver in a snow storm. They had no idea what was in store for them and were totally unprepared for how long they were going to have to stay. The family ended up being there for two months and during that time were told by the specialist that it would be a miracle if Zach lived to be two years old. Renal failure is a medical condition in which the kidneys fail to adequately filter waste products from the blood. Bone health may also be affected and there is an increased risk of heart disease. Against all odds, Zach is now eleven. His positive outlook and fighting spirit, the love and support of his family, the medical expertise of BC Children’s Hospital, and his own awareness and ability to deal with this disease have kept him going. He will shortly be entering puberty, a time of hormonal changes and rapid growth and his tiring kidneys may not be able to cope. Zach now waits for a transplant, a procedure that will take the family away from their home for three months. He is currently one of six children on a waiting list for a new kidney at BC Children’s Hospital. The family are due back at the hospital on October 20 where they will find out more about the transplant process. As the transplant waiting list grows, many patients are pursuing the option of a living donor transplant, and two of Zach’s family will be undergoing tests to see if they are a match. Zach’s mom, Jana, wants to bring awareness to the need for organ transplant donors.

With the help of her social worker at Children’s and the Kidney Foundation she has gained a lot of knowledge of the importance of organ donations and has become a passionate advocate. “There are so many people waiting for transplants,” she said. “You can take it with you, but you shouldn’t.” Jana would like everyone to take a few moments to find out more by visiting the B.C. Transplant Society’s website, where they will find information and an organ donor registry form. Zach’s health and the frequent long trips to Children’s Hospital have been a huge financial burden for the family and resulted in many lost hours of work. An account has been opened in Zach’s name at the Heritage Credit Union in Castlegar and monetary donations are also gratefully received online through FundRazr. “We are not looking for hand-outs, only assistance.” Jana said. “Zach is our family’s hero.”

Sculpture Talk Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.
Virginia Sperry Tundra (steel) Maryland artist Virginia Sperry summarizes her sculpting career as “an amazing journey”. Without a doubt, she has proven her flexibility in working with a variety of mediums, and her evolution towards larger, primarily steel, sculptures gives us her initial offering at Castlegar Sculpturewalk —Tundra. “So much of my work is based on or inspired by elements of nature”, she says. “When I worked with polymer clay, I enjoyed sculpting animals like lizards, frogs and snakes as well as elephants and even dragons. Once I began welding with steel—which I liken to gluing with lightening, so exciting—animals on a larger scale were an obvious subject matter.” She has done a number of large animal sculptures—a
bear (her personal favourite Shash, Navajo for bear), a hawk, a lioness with cub in mouth and several giraffes, Vulnerability (standing nearly eleven feet tall and as wide and long), and Hungry. The latter piece is actually only the head and neck; Sperry has cleverly positioned Hungry displayed between a stable window and a pot of flowers, leaving the body to the viewer’s imagination. Tundra displays ample proof of her ability to capture the character of an animal on a large scale. “I always think of the musk ox as an amalgam of many different animals,” she says. “They are ungainly but endearing. Their fur is the warmest of any animal, which allows them to thrive in the inhospitable Arctic conditions.” Musk oxen are well known for their ability to fend off packs of wolves by placing their young and vulnerable in the centre of a ring of outward facing bulls, making the herd virtually impregnable. Tundra stands nearly five feet high, displaying the lowered head, curled horns and distinctive hump of a musk ox in its standard defensive position —all bulk and wariness. Sperry has used overlapping strips of varying lengths of steel to capture the shagginess of its coat spectacularly. The various tones of steel emulate the spectrum of colours found in the fur, from nearly blonde to dark brown. golden accents radiate against the shades of brown. The sculpture was re-
cently honored with a Best of Show: Other Materials award in the Mankato, Minnesota City Art Sculpture show. While bigger steel pieces are the direction Sperry has been moving in, she continues to create smaller works using steel or wood as the base medium and then adding natural materials or polymer clay to finish them. Five Points of View presents slender, beautifully stylized identical clay birds with tufted feet encircled by a sprocket. Forest Floor combines steel, wool, jute, twigs, yarn and rocks to create a lovely vessel with a portal to the inside. Ex Libris takes a water spout mounted to a long wooden board with tap above; from the spout tumble tiny, brightly coloured clay books, cascading down helter-skelter onto a stack of actual books. Like all her sculptures, it is cleverly conceived—and poignant too. Sperry’s father asked her to create something in memory of her mom, who was an avid reader, to be installed in the nursing home where she had spent some time. Now her father lives in the same residence, enjoying his daughter’s work daily. Ex Libris is a lovely homage to her parents from the undeniably talented Sperry. Her work on display here— Tundra showcases just one of the many avenues she explores on her continuing amazing journey. www.virginiasperry.com

Teachers strike at ‘impasse
Parents told to brace for long shut-down of schools Jeff Nagel West Kootenay Advertiser
Pickets were brandished instead of pencils at public schools Tuesday after an attempt at mediated talks to resolve the teachers strike collapsed over the weekend, ending hopes classes could start on schedule. School district administrators warned parents of children requiring alternate child care to plan for a lengthy shutdown of schools and to not assume the labour dispute will be resolved in a matter of days. Veteran mediator Vince Ready walked away from the exploratory negotiations Saturday, saying the two sides were at “an impasse” and simply too far apart – particularly on wages and benefits – for mediation to be productive. B.C. Teachers Federation president Jim Iker said the two sides are just one per cent apart on wages. The government offer is seven per cent over six years, while the union wants eight per cent over five. But Education Minister Peter Fassbender said the BCTF demand is still nearly twice what other public sector unions have settled for once benefit demands are included. The province has also taken a $1,200 signing bonus off the table, while the union still wants $5,000, which makes up a big chunk of what the government says is a $300-million gulf between the positions, The province has offered a $75-million Learning Improvement Fund to help address special needs but the union wants much more for special needs and to settle grievances. Another challenge to a negotiated settlement remains the government’s pending appeal of a B.C. Supreme Court ruling that it violated the union’s bargaining rights in 2002 when it stripped provisions on class size and support. Iker claimed the BCTF has reduced its demands by $125 million, including a cut in the size of its proposed fund to settle grievances, while the government offered no meaningful moves in return and “squandered” the chance at a deal. He said the province wants new contract language that will “nullify” the
union’s legal victories on class size and composition and circumvent any future appeal court ruling in teachers’ favour. “B.C. teachers will not bargain away everything that the B.C. Supreme Court has already awarded us and we will not jeopardize any future court decision,” Iker said. “The government must back off that unreasonable request and invest money in the system now.” Fassbender again insisted the province won’t legislate the teachers back to work, saying it would keep the government and union “on the same dysfunctional treadmill” they’ve been on for 30 years. “Negotiating a settlement requires union leaders to stand in front of their members and explain what has been achieved at the bargaining table,” he said. “I worry the BCTF leadership is actually counting on government to legislate an end to this strike so they can avoid having a difficult conversation with their members about what is realistic and achievable.” He had previously urged the union to agree to open schools on time this week as part of a two-week truce while mediation could continue. That possibility evaporated when Ready said he saw no route to an agreement and walked away. “The BCTF leadership has stubbornly refused every effort to reach a fair deal and they have even refused to give teachers a chance to vote on suspending the pickets while an agreement is mediated,” Fassbender said. Parents have begun signing up for a government offer of $40 per child under age 13 for each day schools are closed. The lumpsum payments are to come after the strike ends and consume all the $12 million a day in strike savings the government would have amassed going forward. The B.C. Federation of Labour on Tuesday announced “Solidarity” rallies in Surrey Tuesday, Kelowna Wednesday, Prince George Thursday and Vancouver on Friday. President Jim Sinclair said the federation will also meet Thursday to discuss more potential ways to assist the teachers.

News RDCK adopts new medical marijuana production bylaws tamara Hynd West Kootenay Advertiser
Seventeen applicants for medical marijuana facilities now have new requirements to meet if they hope to get approval. The Regional District of the Central Kootenay has taken steps to better manage licensing requirements. The board adopted several amendment bylaws to provide general regulations pertaining to licensed medical marijuana production facilities (LMMPF) and licensed medical marijuana research facilities (LMMRF). The bylaws provide guidelines regarding minimum site area, site coverage, setbacks and height requirements. A public hearing
on the subject, held in Nelson on July 14, saw little response with two members of the public in attendance and one letter was received urging the board to keep the proposed setbacks. Many of the areas in the RDCK have comprehensive landuse bylaws. For areas that do not have rural land-use or zoning bylaws, a building permit is required for any new construction or for a change in use of an existing structure for the purpose of establishing a medical marijuana facility. In a report to the board, RDCK planning manager Meeri Durand stated, “Health Canada approval is required for the operation and use

The government website states, “The new regulations aim to treat marijuana as much as possible like any other narcotic used for medical purposes by creating conditions for a new, commercial industry that is responsible for its production and distribution.” The production of marijuana for medical purposes in private residences was to end in March 31, 2014, as did the Health Canada supply so the only way to access marijuana for medical purposes is through commercial, licensed producers.

federal government changed the licensing requirements in 2013. Critics say the new legislation essentially industrialized medicinal marijuana production virtually eliminating mom and pop growers which were numbered at more than 13,000 in B.C. in 2013. To date there are now only five licensed producers located in B.C., one of which states on its web page that it has no product to offer until its harvest this fall. Since 2001, Health Canada granted access to marijuana for medical purposes to Canadians who have had the support of their physicians. With more than 1,000 km driven at a range of speeds, the real world consumption was 12L/100 km, close to the 11.4L/100 km official highway rating with the 6.2L engine. All the current Yukon models are equipped with a 6-speed automatic but the 6.2L engines will get an 8-speed this fall, with the 5.3L following next year. Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

This shop was involved in custom fabrication, complete 4x4 rebuilds, and sales of off-road related products. This would prepare him for his current position as Manager for Custom Truck Parts, one of the largest accessory warehouses in Canada. Driving to Hell and back can be cool By Alexandra Straub
ANN ARBOR, MI. – If you’re driving to Hell, what kind of car would you want to be in? An SUV? A sports car? One that if you never come back, at least your missing person’s report would list you last seen: “in something fast, flashy and awesome?” When my driving partner and I stumbled upon Hell, Michigan, or at least the sign that directed us that way, we were in the all-new, 2015 Hyundai Sonata; a sedan that is now seven generations strong.
We had air conditioning in case it got really hot and directions via the navigation system in case we wanted to go to Hell and back and lost our way. And comfortable seats in case the crossing of the River Styx was long and arduous. Furthermore, we had the power to get us out of there if we needed to leave in a hurry. Okay, enough about Hell and back to the car… for 2015, the Sonata gives you two engine options; both of which have been revised for the seventh generation. The first is a peppy 2.4L, 4-cylinder with 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque.
Then there’s the spirited, optional, 2.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharged fourcylinder engine with 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both engine variants are linked with a 6-speed automatic transmission. There’s a lot going on with Hyundai’s mid-size sedan. It’s built with an allnew chassis, which equates to a more comfortable ride, better handling and an overall improvement in NVH (Noise, Vibrations, Harshness.) To test that out, we took it to the streets of Ann Arbor in Michigan, as well as the backcountry roads that have sweeping corners and tight turns.

The first thing I noticed was how much better the handling was, especially when you have it in Sport mode. The 2015 Sonata gives the driver a choice of three drive modes. These modes work together with the sedan’s engine, transmission, and Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) to suit different driver preferences. In Sport, powertrain responsiveness and heavier steering weight are both increased. The steering weight definitely comes in handy on the twisty parts of the road. In Normal mode, steering isn’t as responsive but better suited for urban environ-
ments. And if you’re in a fuel saving mood, pop the car into Eco mode. This softens throttle response and recalibrates transmission response so you get the most out of your tank. Speaking of steering, Hyundai mentions, “The 2015 Sonata’s steering wheel features an irregular shape with increased rim thickness and ergonomic grip rests. These subtle changes ensure more of the steering wheel surface remains in contact with the driver’s hands. In turn, the vehicle offers enhanced steering system feel, especially at high speed.” I’d agree with this. My fingers were comfortably placed at 9 and 3
o’clock and felt pretty good there. But it’s not just the driving modes and steering wheel that make the Sonata as popular as it is. The 2015 comes with all new styling inside and outside. Let’s start with the cabin, since the driver will spend more time looking at a centre stack than they will the front, hexagonal grille. Featuring even higher quality materials than before, it’s softer to the touch and the layout is optimized for the driver. On the outside, you’ll see a family resemblance to the Sonata’s big brother, the Genesis.
The character line is more pronounced, yet the cumulative look is more sophisticated and mature. It’s a tough segment to be in. When you have frontrunners like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Mazda6 and more, it can get pretty heated. But the Sonata remains cool and collected and has the goods to keep up with the best of them. The 2015 Hyundai Sonata has a starting MSRP of $23,999. The top of the line Sport 2.0T Ultimate has an MSRP of $34,799. Visit www.hyundaicanada.com for more information. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Super-duper luxury cars and classy fashion By Keith Morgan
Canada’s most valuable collection of supercars and luxury brands rolls into Vancouver’s VanDusen Botanical Garden this weekend. The fifth Luxury and Supercar Weekend will again showcase the crème de la crème of cars and also dazzle with fashion and art on the Great Lawn. This event has grown as a spectacle each year and is now
the talk of the town among auto aficionados. The wide selection of luxury cars includes examples of Lamborghini, Pagani, McLaren, Bugatti, Ferrari, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, Lincoln and Mustang. This year’s Canadian Concours d’Elegance classes include 100th anniversary of Maserati, 50 years of Mustang, 50 years of Jensen, 50 years of Sunbeam Tigers, The British Invasion,
American Supercars, Modified Luxury and Modified Supercars, Chromes and Fins, Off Road Luxury, 50 years of Chevelle and GTO, Italian Supercars, Restomod, and Pre-First World War (Brass Era). Look out for the Pagani Huayra, which is powered by a 720-horsepower twin turbo engine, the fastest car to go around the BBC TV program Top Gear’s test track. Also worthy of a lingering look will be the P1

Five of Ford’s oddest cars
is looking for paper carriers in all areas for one day a week
By Rob Sass
AAA Multi-national Ford Motor Company has charted a quite conservative path through the years. Unlike dedicated eccentrics SAAB, Citroën and even American Motors, Ford has produced few cars that could be characterized as weird, but here are five from Ford (and its Lincoln and Mercury divisions) that still have us scratching our heads:

Rob Sass
1982-85 Ford Escort EXP: The EXP (along with its twin the Mercury Lynx LN-7) was simply bizarre. It was supposed to be a sporty two-seater version of the Escort compact, but
1960 Ford
the styling was incomprehensible. It was touted as a modern, affordable and efficient version of the concept that brought the car world the classic two-seater 195557 Thunderbird. But where the T-Bird was graceful and elegant, the EXP was just odd, and the squinty, hungover look to the headlight treatment was particularly strange. 1963 Mercury Monterey Breezeway: The Monterey and its predecessor, the Turnpike Cruiser, were standard 1950s and 1960s full-size Ford Motor Company products, but it was the backward-slanted rear roofline and a rear window that lowered for ventilation
that added a truly strange look to the car, as well as providing ready ingress for exhaust fumes. 2002 Lincoln Blackwood: The Blackwood was a one-year-only Lincoln luxury pickup designed to compete with the Cadillac Escalade XLT. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the answer to a question that nobody was asking—a shortbed luxury pickup that was too nice to haul anything. Less than 3,500 were made in that single year. 1959-67 Ford Anglia 105E: Famous as the flying car from the “Harry Potter” series, this English Ford sported a distinctly American feature — the bizarre, back-
ward-slanted rear window that Lincolns and Mercurys had sported in the U.S. 1996-08 Ford Ka: Another odd duck Ford not seen in the U.S, the Ka was both an oddly named and strangely styled city car that measured just over 142” overall. Performance was largely theoretical as the Ka was powered by a derivative of the ancient four-cylinder that powered the Anglia. Handling was at least said to be entertaining.
