The body of a male cyclist was found in a ditch along the north side of Lougheed Highway near the Mission border on Wednesday. Ridge Meadows RCMP arrived by 280th Street at around 2:30 p.m. and the highway was shut down to a single lane of alternating traffic. The cause of the death is not yet determined. “I can confirm that it is a male, and he had been riding a bicycle,” said an RCMP spokesperson. The cause of death has not been determined. A coroner attended and an autopsy will be performed.

McIver was promoting Maple Ridge to local business types. McIver was profiling Maple Ridge and looked back 48 years before, when his dad was at the first council meeting following the formation of the Township of Maple

Students getting work done Grade 12s are anxious to get back to school By Nei l Corbe tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
S
ome parents picture their teens home in bed, in a vampire’s daytime sleep, dreaming of another day off school. But local students say that’s not how it is, and by showing up at school on Wednesday morning, a few are walking the talk.
Two young men, Zach Stuive and Brian Dongalen, were in the uncharacteristically empty rotunda at Thomas Haney secondary at 9 a.m., planning for the coming school year, and eager to get on with it. “We’re Grade 12 students this year and that’s a bid deal. We graduate. We need to plan the rest of our lives,” said Stuive. “With the whole teachers strike, we’re taking away from our year, and we need to pick an occupation, we need to pick schools, we need to apply for scholarships, and we have only so much time to do that.” There was supposed to be a third friend, joining them, but he slept in. Still, they expect the study group could grow. They sent out a Snapchat, with a photo of them cracking books and laptops, with the line “Getting work done.” “I’ve already had three or four people that are like ‘Hey, what are you doing at school, do you think we can come?’” said Stuive. It’s not the stereotypical view of teenagers, but the pair say their peers know this is a big year, and they want the labour unrest to finally end. “It sucks, because we want to be in school, we want to be learning and we want to be getting ready for the rest of our lives,” he said. He has calculated his grades at 93 per cent for high school so far, and his goal is a good university, and hopefully a scholarship. But in achieving those goals, he is in competition with private school students who are already hitting the books. “All these people that go to private schools – you’ve got Meadowridge, Pacific Academy and MEI – these

kids are going to school and they’re receiving the education they are supposed to be receiving. I feel that they have the upper hand.” They lament the loss of the grad transitions person at the school, whose position was cut during the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District’s last round of budget cuts. “She was a super sweet lady and super helpful for all the grads,” said Stuive. “This year we’re not going to have that asset. Private schools are
going to have that.” Wednesday morning Stuive and Dongalen were doing some of the future planning that would have been facilitated by the grad transitions staff member. They could have done the work at home, but Stuive wanted to go to Haney. “I just like the school atmosphere. It kind of gets you in a zone. It’s a place where you get things done.” The stricken two weeks at the end
of last year were frustrating, but the Grade 11s didn’t feel it as sharply. “At the end of the year, at Thomas Haney, you do a lot of crunching, you do a lot of getting all the courses done, you do a lot of finalizing,” Stuive explained. It is a school where students generally work at their own pace, in a selfdirected learning model, in which teachers help students as they are needed. “With the last two weeks being gone, stripped away from us, lots of students who had to finish exams, finish big tests, they weren’t able to do that, and now their transcripts for university are looking pretty bad,” said Stuive. “And this year they need to make up for that. The more time they’re on strike, the less time we have to do that.” The self-directed learning model is good for kids who like to sprint ahead in their schoolwork, and it also allows students who need extra help in a subject to take their time. The danger there is slipping behind, and those students are more at risk as the missed school days add up, said the boys.

“Once you get too far behind, you feel almost trapped, and you feel like, ‘What am I going to do,’” said Stuive. “And this is our Grade 12 year. We don’t have next year to fix it all.” Dongalen is a basketball point guard at Haney, and last year his focus on sports saw him procrastinate on some school work. His grades aren’t where he wants them. “Last year, I knew I had Grade 12 to fix everything, but now I’ve got to step my game up, and do all this work.” Stuive has followed the strike in the media, and is most frustrated by the amount of time that the two sides have spent posturing rather than negotiating. “I was always taught if there’s a problem, you’ve got to address the problem. You can’t just wait and make it go away. But I see [BCTF president] Jim Iker and [Education Minister] Peter Fassbender, and they’re not even in negotiations. That’s not going to fix any of the problems. “I don’t know what they’re waiting for, but they need to go in there, and just get the work done. Get this deal signed. I want to go back to school.”

MLA ‘open’ to discuss issues Bing was out of country during protest By Nei l Corbe tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Doug Bing said he was on a plane from Iceland when local parents protesting the teacher bargaining impasse were trying to reach him on Tuesday morning. About 12 sign-waving protesters and a similar number of children arrived at Bing’s office near at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Dewdney Trunk Road to find they were locked out of the office, and none of Bing’s constituency staff spoke with them. “We expected we’d be able to voice our concerns, talk about some of the issues and ask some questions. Now I’m really upset that they’re not here. Now I’m really angry,” said parent Karen Learmonth. Bing, in an email, said

He said he has reached out to Learmonth personally to explain his absence. He also got in touch with Phillip Gray, who complained in a letter that Bing had declined to meet him after not getting an email response. Bing told Gray the invitation to meet remains open. “As you know, I have
had a nine-year relationship with the press and the public since I was first elected to office, and I remain open and willing to discuss issues with both whenever it is mutually convenient,” said Bing in his email. Bing also took to Twitter about the issue on Wednesday night. “Can’t believe everything u read. Shame on u for spreading unsubstantiated misinformation,” he tweeted. A message was left for
Bing on his cellphone, explaining that constituency members were upset at not being allowed to speak with Bing or his constituency staff, and quoted one of the protesters, who said: “So much for democracy … “ Bing did not return the call. Reached on Thursday, Bing clarified that the doors to his office are always locked to allow constituency assistants to control potential confrontations. Visitors speak though an intercom, and are “buzzed in.” In the case of a large group of protestors, they would normally be allowed to enter one or two at a time, he said, to make appointments or drop off a petition. However, on the day in question, both of his assistants were away, and a temp was covering the phones. The temp did not open the office to the parents. Bing could not discuss the teachers’ strike, because he was called for ferry boarding when reached on Thursday.

Hide and seek Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Doug Bing was on a plane returning from a vacation in Iceland when protesters wanted to talk to him about the teachers’ strike at his constituency office earlier this week. The protesters, concerned parents and some of their children, wanted to voice their concerns and ask some questions, but were perturbed that the MLA’s office doors were locked and that no one from Bing’s staff acknowledged them. Bing did not respond to media inquires that day either. He did on Wednesday, after shaming media reports about the shunned protestors the night before on Twitter. Interestingly, Premier Christy Clark passed on the B.C. Teacher Federation’s invitation to join the union at the bargaining table last weekend, then took to social media to spread more government propaganda about the strike and ‘unfair’ demands. The theme here is accountability, or lack thereof. The premier doesn’t have to respond to questions from teachers, protestors or journalists when she communicates through social media. She can write whatever she wants; no filter; no context; no balance. Teachers can do the same, and they are. But they are not elected officials. Taxpayers voted for Bing. Their money pays his salary, and that of his staff, and for his office. So if they have some questions about a strike that affects their children’s education, which they also pay for, the MLA or his staff should make an effort to answer them. Bing did that, and promptly after returning from vacation. He explained that his office doors are always locked to control potential confrontations, and that constituents have to use an intercom to enter. But a temporary staff person did not let them in on Tuesday. Coincidentally, Liberal MLA for Maple Ridge Mission, Marc Dalton, has not responded to media inquiries about the teachers’ strike. And before Bing could be asked about it Wednesday, he ended the conversation, saying he had to catch a ferry. Conveniently, Education Minister Peter Fassbender was also not at his Surrey constituency office on Tuesday, when a large rally took place. But anyone can walk up to a teacher on one of the many picket lines and have their questions answered. Teachers aren’t running away. We don’t expect our politicians to hide. They need to stand up to criticism, defend their position, and be accountable to those who elected them. – The News

How many pickles can you pick? W
hile it is easy to understand the depth of emotion a person can experience over the loss of a pet, the suggestions put forward following the recent death of six dogs under the care of a dog walker are unrealistic and overly Sidewinder Sandy Macdougall dramatic. The most unreasonable of the suggestions calls for the establishment of standards for the regulation, qualification and licensing of dog walkers. It all begs the question of where the responsibility of individual dog owners begins and ends. I am not aware of any parallel suggestion that dog owners themselves should be required to prove their qualifications or abilities in connection with the ownership of their dogs. At the risk of sounding like an old grump, if you haven’t got the time, knowledge or energy to properly care for your pet, and that should include walking and exercising your dog, you shouldn’t own a dog. And, for that matter, why target only dog walkers? Why not broaden the scope of this foolishness to include the handlers of birds, cats, hamsters and all other pets?
Q
uestion of the week:
We already have an extensive body of federal, provincial and municipal laws governing the treatment of virtually every conceivable type of animal or pet known to mankind. There is no great need for further regulation, but there could be broader emphasis on public information and education on the proper care of pets, including walking your dog. We are already overburdened with too many laws, regulations and other unnecessary restrictions on our personal freedoms. In addition, we have also ceded our responsibilities in too many areas of our lives to the control of bureaucracies. The call to establish standards, regulations and licensing for dog walkers must make the heart of every bureaucrat in Canada beat a little faster. Just imagine – whole new bureaucratic empires that could flourish Of course, the schedules, fees and other issues to be established would require budgets, staff and a whole range of bureaucratic claptrap which would eventually probably obscure the original purpose of the exercise. And, not unlike the age-old debates about how many angels can you place on the head of a pin, or how many pickles can a pickle picker pick, there would have to be a method of determining how many dogs a dog walker can walk and where they can be walked. Consideration
Are classroom size and composition important to you? Yes: 61% – No: 39%
would also have to be given to the sex of the dogs each dog walker has under their control at any given time lest the more exuberant young males attempt to assert themselves on any lady dogs in the procession. In short, there are already too many bylaws governing dogs and the places where they are allowed to be present but many of these current standards are ignored by dog owners and those in charge of the applicable bylaws. With little being done to enforce existing rules, why should anyone think additional regulations would be any more successfully applied? I have always considered myself to be reasonable and willing to sometimes grudgingly accept conditions that I do not personally favour, so I am willing to concede that some form of dog walking regulation is likely going to be imposed. However, my personal favourite would be the licensing and regulation of street walkers, who are a much bigger concern in my neighbourhood than dog walkers. There is already precedent for the district to impose regulations and collect huge fees from activity such as gambling, which some of us old grumps consider to be immoral. Why treat street walkers any different?

Robbing Peter Pitt mayor a great contributor Editor, The News: I have been a teacher since 1970 and I have witnessed the ups and downs concerning education first hand. Ignoring the courts of British Columbia is an affront to true democracy. Ripping up a legal contract and underfunding education is despicable, to say the least. Every day as a teacher, I have been on the front lines trying to do more and more with less and less. Our ‘grey area children’ used to be able to get the necessary help. Now we rob from Peter to pay Paul. I won’t even go into the behaviour problems that have escalated substantially. Parents deserve more for their children. My grandchildren deserve more. Every public school should be as good as a private one, and they can be with the proper funding. Class size and composition do matter. Please do the right thing and give all British Columbian children the right to the best education this province can offer. Do not put yourself above the courts of this land. Stop wasting our tax money fighting what the courts have already decided twice. Instead, invest this money into our children, who are the future. Janice Tupniak Maple Ridge

Editor, The News: Re: Mayor Walters will not run again (The News, Aug. 29). It was disappointing, if not surprising, to learn that Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters will not be running for office in November. As a first-term Maple Ridge councillor, I have had many occasions to work with and, at local community and provincial meetings and affairs, socialize with Mayor Walters. She has always been extremely helpful, thoughtful and collaborative, while at the same time strongly representing the best interests of her community. On joint projects, such as the current work to bring post secondary education to our communities, she has been a great contributor and voice at the table. I recall one of the first times I spoke with Mayor Walters, and, in my innocence and inexperience, I asked if it might not be better for our two communities to join together as one. Let’s just say that her answer was completely unam-
biguous, and I didn’t ask again. Best wishes Mayor Walters. You have served your community well, with dedication, integrity, hard work, humour and enthusiasm. May you truly enjoy the next phase of your life, with a lot more time for family and relaxation. Coun. Bob Masse Maple Ridge
‘An affront’ Editor, The News: Re: Mayor Walters will not run again (The News, Aug. 29). Mayor Deb Walters’ announcement that she will not seek re-election this November will undoubtedly be welcomed by a majority of residents in Pitt Meadows. From the comments I have heard from many who supported her last time, they had no intention of repeating their mistake, as they themselves put it. There is no doubt in my mind, nor that of many others, that the mayor realized her reelection was unlikely.
It is ironic that she considers that the city is on the right track, considering her repeated efforts to derail it during the past three years. Her lack of true leadership fractured the council. Fortunately, we will have the opportunity in November to put this right again. For the mayor to take credit for the lowest increase in property taxes in the past 12 years is but another affront to this community. We can correctly attribute this achievement to the late Tom Murray, who organized and shepherded a campaign for more responsible fiscal management. Shortly after taking office, Mayor Walters stated that a property tax increase of four per cent every year was essential. In subsequent discussions, she remained adamant that anything less would mean a reduction of essential services. I didn’t know Mr. Murray very well, having met him when I signed the first petition
calling for no tax increase. But I came to recognize his integrity in working tirelessly for the citizens of this community. He was frequently disrespected by the mayor when he spoke at council meetings. But he pushed on until cancer finally claimed his life. Pitt Meadows owes him much. He, and perhaps more significantly what he worked for, has emerged the winner in the end. Byron Hosking Pitt Meadows
Happy trails Editor, The News: Re: Mayor Walters will not run again (The News, Aug. 29). Thank you, Mayor Deb Walters, for your decision to not seek another term in Pitt Meadows. Happy trails. Now if we could only cut wages and perks of civic staff and trim excessive property taxes in this community. Kelvin Klettke Pitt Meadows

Modular river homes rile Fern Cres. residents By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
Residents are worried and district staff are
concerned about a plan to put 166 new homes on both sides of the South Alouette River at 240th Street.
“It’s setting a precedent. They’re ripping up the OCP,” said Harvey Gigun, who lives next to the proposed develop-

ment on Fern Crescent. He’s concerned about the increased housing density suggested, from 2.5 residential units per hectare to more than 40. “That’s not even in Albion,” Gigun said of the density. The row home developments in Albion range between 30 to 40 units per net hectare. “The sign went up and the entire neighourhood is talking about it,” Gigun said of Fern Crescent. “It’s generating a lot of controversy already and it’s still in its infancy. This is pristine, environmental land here.” The proposal is to build 166 modular homes on 237 sq.-metre-lots in a development that would straddle the river. Currently, the homes in the area, such as Gigun’s, where he’s lived for 20 years, are on acre lots. The development would also eliminate a horse trail in the area. Gigun’s not opposed to modular homes – pointing out the PNE prize home is modular – providing they’re large enough. District of Maple Ridge planning director Christine Carter said modular homes are not the same as mobile homes found in trailer parks. “A modular home

would allow dense, urban-type development and rural housing on acreages. Still, the type of housing being proposed, modular rancher-style homes with no basements and no stairs, are popular in the marketplace. “A lot of empty nesters are saying they want smaller homes with no stairs,” Carter said. The proposal wouldn’t require an amendment to Metro Vancouver’s regional growth strategy because that document already recognizes urban density in that area. The Alouette River Management Society met Thursday to discuss the issue. Council looks at the application at its Sept. 15 committee meeting.

One clipping she dug up, from an April 1933 issue the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Gazette, told of former mayor Solomon Mussallem’s trip to Victoria to lobby for provincial money. He didn’t go alone, accompanied by several of his counterparts from other cities in what’s now Metro Vancouver. Mussallem was pressing the province to help Maple Ridge with the costs of feeding and housing the victims of the Depression of the 1930s. “Couldn’t that be done today?” Patenaude said.

Nelson Lougheed (centre) helped pave the way for a highway through Maple Ridge. “It’s amazing how relevant that still is.” Children were going barefoot and couldn’t go to school on empty stomachs, Mussallem told politicians. With markets depressed, farmers could pay their property taxes and shouldn’t have to go into more debt to take care of a situation that arose from an “industrial crisis in which they were not even concerned.” According to The Gazette from April 20, 1933, Mussallem told a later meeting of Maple Ridge council he pressed “pretty hard” for reimbursement
from the province for all the costs of incurred by the district in helping people in the Depression years. Revenue from slot machines was a topic back in 1933. Mussallem favoured a $1,000 yearly fee for each slot machine in town, following New Westminster’s example. The machines could be a source of revenue, commented another councillor, foreshadowing to the present day, when Maple Ridge makes a million dollars a year from its electronic slot machines. Even in the old days,

education was controversial. Mussallem wrote on the topic in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Gazette after the opening of Maple Ridge High School in April 1941, during the depths of the Second World War. Some people question whether spending money on education is worth it, Mussallem wrote, saying some could argue that “reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic were considered good enough as the education of the ordinary person.” But “democracy demanded that all should have an equal chance in this forward movement [of civilization], said Mussallem, a Lebanese immigrant. A high school education “assists in breaking down all class distinctions and disagreements … and is a big step towards an ideal state of educated and understanding people, the backbone of democracy.” With such an education, “people are taught to reason for themselves … and fit themselves … a higher order of humanity. “They are taught to be free …” Former mayor Nelson Lougheed, (1914-16) used the stage of municipal politics to springboard into the provincial legislature. Lougheed, along with George Abernethy, ran the Abernethy and Lougheed Lumber Co. and won a seat with the B.C. Conservatives in 1928. He served as minister of public works and one of his prime projects was pressing for a highway on the north side of the Fraser River. He succeeded and the Lougheed Highway was built through Maple Ridge in 1931. By the next election, however, the B.C. Conservatives were in disarray and because of
infighting couldn’t even field a candidate. “It was the only successful Conservative party in B.C.,” Patenaude points out. Maple Ridge’s communities always have played a major role in the district’s identity. People were born, lived and died in Port Hammond, or Whonnock or Webster’s Corners when it wasn’t easy to get around. When railway stops and postal addresses took on those names, identities became even stronger, a factor worsened by the ward system in place until the 1947. The divisions became apparent in the 1950s, when Port Hammond was trying to get door-todoor mail delivery. But Canada Post said for that to happen, Port Hammond residents had to use Haney as a mailing address. “That’s when all hell broke loose,” said Patenaude. Instead, Canada Post agreed to the more neutral name of Maple Ridge as the postal address. Even the name of Maple Ridge is a triumph of self determination and pride, a small strike against the colonialism of the time. The name countered the trend of the time of naming cities and places after nostalgic memories from the old country, as was the case for Surrey or Langley. Instead, Maple Ridge referred to a line of maples on a high ridge on John McIver’s farm, now the Maple Ridge Golf Course. Patenaude has another anecdote, recounted by another former mayor, Hector Ferguson in the 1800s, that distinguishes Maple Ridge from other Metro municipalities. Ferguson had just arrived from Victoria and on his way to the Vancouver area, but didn’t know where to settle. His barber told him if he was a pious person, Abbotsford was the place to move. And if he wanted to focus on business, go to Ladner. “But if you love to dance, go to Maple Ridge.” That trait has continued with festivals and events that go throughout the year, says Patenaude. “Still, we have a massive community event calendar. There’s just always been a great enthusiasm for community gatherings.” That, and appreciation for the beautiful setting.

Education ministry officials said school districts would be consulted on any potential changes to the school year to mitigate the strike. But Bacchus said she’s heard nothing so far and predicted it would be disruptive to families that have booked vacations and made other commitments far in advance. “It’s not going to be easy,” she said, noting changes would also require exemptions from School Act requirements. Talk of calendar adjustments is another sign of possible long-term implications from the strike, even though it has only disrupted the first few days of the new school year. Parents have scrambled for limited space for child care, day camps, tutors and even private school placements for their children. Stepping up to meet the demand have been independent schools and, increasingly, public school teachers no longer drawing a regular pay cheque who are advertising “tutor” services online. “I work for the Surrey School District and I am willing to tutor your child in the comfort of your own home,” reads

one Craigslist post from an elementary school teacher. Distance learning through independent online schools is another option. The B.C. Online School run out of Kelowna by Heritage Christian Schools has been swamped with three times the normal number applications for distributed learning from students across the province as a result of the strike. “We are overloaded with kids coming to us, particularly those in Grade 12 who want to get a particular course and get their requirements for university,” said superintendent Greg Bitgood. The online school, which is half funded by the province, instructed 3,400 students in its summer school – three times the normal number – and turned away another 6,000. Demand has surged again now that the strike has spilled into September and pushed back the scheduled start of classes. Bitgood is weighing whether to hire more teachers in response. But it’s risky because a deal or government legislation could send teachers back to work and students back to regular classes, said Bitgood, who emphasized he also wants the public school shutdown to end quickly. There’s only four such independent schools that offer distributed learning to students in the public system, Bitgood said, adding “there’s no way” the industry can meet the demand created by the strike. Another independent online school based in Surrey declined to comment, saying the issue was “too sensitive.”

“First officers on scene had felt the deceased male had been riding his bike and might have been struck by a hit and run vehicle,” said Cpl Alanna Dunlop. “With the assistance of the Integrated Forensic Identification Section and the ICARS [Integrated Crash, Analyst, Reconstructionist Services] Unit, it would appear this is not the cause.” Police are working alongside the B.C. Coroner Service to establish the cause of death, but that will not be known for at least a few days. Further details will be released then. Until then, the name of the deceased will also remain unknown. Darlene Harris, who lives in one of the mobile home parks on 287th Street and walks to a bus stop on the highway, says Lougheed is dangerous and narrow along that stretch and think it’s possible that, if the man had been hit by a passing vehicle, it’s possible the driver might not have even known. “I don’t think anybody intentionally hit this guy, but it’s very dangerous walking on Lougheed,” she said. “These transports, you get one or two of them in tandem, they almost knock you over because of the wind.” Harris complained last year about the road, asking for a bus stop on 287th Street to make it safer. Three mobile home parks line the road, accommodating a few hundred residents, but the bus stops in the area only three times a day. “There are so many citizens that live in this area, they can’t get out of here. We’re all stranded. If your car breaks down, you can’t get out of here.”

Spending three days Zack Spencer is a simpler dashboard layout with behind the wheel made me realize what traditional rotary knobs and buttons, a good job GMC has done with this truck, whereas the Cadillac has moved to touch sensitive from fuel economy to creature comforts. panels that take time to master. Looks Drive Last year, GM introduced the Chevrolet Silverado and The Yukon is offered with two engine choices, the GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks. In fact, the Silver5.3L 355hp V8 in the base SLE and middle SLT Yukon ado won the North American Truck of the Year and models and the 6.2L V8 in the Denali. This 6.2L engine the GMC Sierra won the AJAC truck of the year. With is also used in the Escalade. There are several reasons a solid basis, the engineers then went about building to consider the Denali over the base 5.3L engine. the full-sized SUVs based on the truck chassis. They The first is the inclusion of the magnetic ride control include the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, the GMC system that is also available in the Escalade. This sysYukon and Denali, plus the Cadillac Escalade. These tem adapts the suspension up to 100 times per second represent a huge profit centre for General Motors and and performed well on a variety of road surfaces in they needed to get them right. The GMC Yukon is the the Yukon. The second is a noise cancelling system most popular of the bunch with one-in-three full-sized that pumps sound waves through the Denali’s stereo SUV buyers choosing the Yukon, which is opposite system to help eliminate unwanted road and engine to the United States where the Chevrolet trucks noise. The third reason is the mighty 6.2L engine with dominate. The top Yukon Denali model traditionally 420hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. Because this engine represents about 35 per cent of all Yukon sales but and the 5.3L have direct injection, variable value timin the first few months of sales, it has captured more ing and most importantly, cylinder management, the than 60 per cent.

V8 can switch off half of the eight cylinders and lean off the fuel mixture to reduce fuel consumption. With more than 1,000 km driven at a range of speeds, the real world consumption was 12L/100 km, close to the 11.4L/100 km official highway rating with the 6.2L engine. All the current Yukon models are equipped with a 6-speed automatic but the 6.2L engines will get an 8-speed this fall, with the 5.3L following next year. AWD is standard on all but the base model and these trucks can tow up to 3856 kg. Verdict The Yukon is winner on all trim levels. I could find no fault but it is pricey. Starting at $51,800 for the SLE or $60,960 for the SLT and $75,540 for the Denali, this isn’t a cheap prospect. However, the Denali offers most of the same features as the more expensive Cadillac Escalade but is more use-friendly and less expensive. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca The Lowdown Power: 5.3L V8 with 355 hp or 6.2L V8 with 420 hp Fill-up: 16.2L/11.4L/100 km (city/highway) Sticker price: $51,800-$75,540

Mustang ready to hit highway By Keith Morgan
T
he all-new 2015 Ford Mustang is now in production and Driveway will be at the much anticipated pony car’s launch next month in California. It goes on sale here later this year, then for the first time in its 50-year history, the Mustang will be exported to more than 120 countries next year. The addition of a right-handdrive Mustang to Ford’s global vehicle lineup will allow the iconic pony car to be exported to more than 25 right-hand-drive markets around the world, including the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa.
Ford boasts that the sixth generation Mustang sets new performance and dynamics benchmarks for the brand with excellent handling, more precise steering control and enhanced ride comfort. “Mustang is and will continue to be an automotive icon,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas. “Expanding its availability globally affords our customers around the world the opportunity to have a true firsthand Mustang experience – one unlike any other.” In April, Ford celebrated the 50th anniversary of the original Mustang. In commemoration of this, each 2015 model carry a badge on the instrument panel that includes the galloping pony logo and the words “Mustang – Since 1964.” Mustang’s impact goes well beyond the more than 9.2 million cars sold in its 50 years of continuous production. It has featured
thousands of times in film, television, music and video games and is the most-liked vehicle on Facebook, with close to eight million likes. Though the car has been redesigned from the ground up, it retains key design elements – including the long sculpted hood and short rear deck – but in a contemporary style. There are more power options available: a 3.7-litre V6 and an all-new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine join the upgraded V8. The Mustang GT continues with the latest edition of the throaty 5.0-litre V8 – now featuring upgraded valvetrain, new intake manifold and improved cylinder heads – that yields 435 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. The Mustang 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine uses direct injection, variable cam timing and a twin-scroll turbocharger to deliver the performance Mustang drivers expect with an output

At the front, a new perimeter subframe helps to stiffen the structure while reducing mass, providing a better foundation for more predictable wheel control that benefits handling, steering and ride. At the rear is an all-new integral-link independent suspension. Geometry, springs, dampers and bushings are all specially tuned for this high-performance application. New aluminum rear knuckles help reduce unsprung mass for improved ride and handling. Prices will be fixed closer to launch.

$468,015 in 2013, an increase of seven per cent from 2012. In addition to $83,700 from two types of bonuses paid to him in 2013, Jarvis got a three per cent raise in base pay to $319,244 to partly compensate him for the elimination of his longterm bonus plan. The long-term incentive plan, a condition of his contract when he took over in 2009, promised him a bonus of up to 20 per cent based on his performance over the
three years from 20102012. As with Jarvis, other TransLink executives got a lift in base pay of 2.4 to 6.4 per cent at the start of 2013 to compensate for the elimination of their short-term bonus programs going forward. It added up to total 2013 compensation of around $380,000 for chief operating officer Doug Kelsey and chief financial officer Cathy McLay, while four other subsidiary presidents or division vice-presidents received

between $310,000 and $330,000. Those executives’ shortterm bonuses ranged from $17,000 to $32,000. TransLink spokesperson Colleen Brennan said confusion about executive compensation stems from the timing of when the bonuses were earned and paid out. She said the now-eliminated bonuses earned in 2012 still had to be paid in 2013, but they will disappear in subsequent years. As a result, she said, most executives’ total compensation for 2014 will drop $20,000 to $40,000 compared to 2013 numbers when it’s reported next year. The exception, Brennan said, is CEO Jarvis, who still gets a shortterm bonus that has not been eliminated. In addition to his shortterm bonus, which was worth $40,300 last year, Jarvis is still due to receive two-thirds of his accrued long-term bonus in future years – it’s spread over three years and the 2013 payout was just the first installment. Board chair Marcella Szel told TransLink’s annual general meeting in May that all bonuses had been eliminated and executive pay had been frozen at 2012 levels. “A lot of taxpayers would be happy to take that kind of pay freeze,” said Jordan Bateman, of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

Vancouver Home + Design Show returns to BC Place By Kerry Vital
The annual Vancouver Home + Design Show will return to BC Place starting on Oct. 16, showcasing the latest trends and tips for homeowners. Among the highlights this year will be celebrity guests such as Bryan Baeumler, host of HGTV’s Leave it to Bryan and House of Bryan, and celebrity interior designers Colin
McAllister and Justin Ryan, currently stars of Cottage Life TV’s Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure. “We are so excited to welcome our favourite designing duo back to the Vancouver Home + Design Show!” says Jill Kivett, regional director at Marketplace Events, who owns and operates the Vancouver Home + Design Show. “Colin and Justin made their Vancouver debut at our show in spring 2007, and we can’t wait for our show-goers to get re-acquainted.
NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT
From their signature humour to their spot-on design savvy, our crowds are definitely in for a well-deserved treat.” The Metrie Main Stage will host several local experts, including Jamie Banfield of Jamie Banfield Design, Sarah Gallop of Sarah Gallop Design Inc. and Leigh-Ann Perrrault, a DIY blogger and regular contributor to Cityline. Other highlights include the Samsung Tag Team Kitchen Challenge, indoor street market Portobello West and Ask A Designer, among others. The show runs until Sunday Oct. 19. “Good design is all about finding your personal style and translating it effectively and affordably into everyday life,” says Kivett. “We’re looking to give every single person to walk through our show at least one tip they can use in their space, whether they rent or own. It’s take-home advice in its finest form.” For more information about the show and to purchase tickets, visit www.vancouverhomeshow.com. Tickets will also be available at BC Place.

Prodigy is Adera’s second six-storey wod-frame project at the University of British Columbia. Among the beautiful features of the homes are stainless-steel appliances and quartz slab countertops in the kitchen.
Higher living at Adera’s Prodigy By Kerry Vital
Adera has been inspired by greatness with Prodigy, their newest condominium project at the University of British Columbia. “Prodigy will be the best building we’ve ever built,” says Eric Andreasen, vicepresident of marketing and sales for Adera. “We’ve taken what we learned from our past projects at UBC and put it all into Prodigy.” Prodigy is Adera’s second six-storey wood-
frame project at UBC, and will include two buildings and 188 homes ranging from 640 to almost 1,000 square feet. “It’s been highly successful so far,” says Andreasen. “The first phase is almost 50 per cent sold, and now we’re looking forward to the next phase of the building.” Prodigy’s exterior is inspired by the natural surroundings, incorporating exposed wood beams, cedar soffits and warm brick cladding. A dramatic two-storey glass lobby bridge and breezeway will link the two buildings. Residents on the penthouse level will all have their own private roof deck, known as Adera’s signature West Coast Lanai. The roof soffiting will be extended over a portion of the deck to allow homeowners to use their deck yearround. “This is something people will be proud to come home to,” Andreasen says. The defining feature will be the extensive
water elements, including the massive reflecting pond in the interior courtyard, where ground-floor patios will have water right up to the edge. Residents will also have stunning views of neighbouring Mundell Park and the lush landscaping that will surround Prodigy. Inside, homeowners will find an elegant kitchen with stainless-steel appliances, quartz slab countertops and a porcelain tile backsplash. One of the upgrades available is the “Ultimate Gourmet Kitchen” package, which Andreasen notes is now going to be standard in the penthouse units after several buyers on that level requested it. The luxurious bathrooms feature porcelain tile flooring, complemented by quartz slab countertops and sleek plumbing fixtures. Homeowners at Prodigy will have access to the i.D. By Me program, which allows you to personalize your home with upgrades that are
right for your lifestyle and your personality. Some of the options you can choose include your colour scheme, upgrading your appliances, changing your flooring, or custom millwork. There will be pedestrian and cyclistonly green streets on two sides of Prodigy, enhancing the natural feel of the entire development, and connecting Prodigy to various parks and other parts of Wesbrook Village. Homeowners at Prodigy will be able to take advantage of all the amenities that the neighbourhood has to offer, including an elementary and secondary school, shopping, dining and recreation. They will also be just steps from Pacific Spirit Regional Park, with its 762 hectares of beaches and temperate rain forest. Homes at Prodigy start in the low 400s. For more information, visit www.adera.com, email prodigy@adera.com, call 604-221-8878 or visit the presentation centre at 106-5983 Gray Avenue, Vancouver, open daily between noon and 5 p.m.

Some options for home renovations By Kevin Gillies, special to The News
I
s it worth it to dig up your backyard to put in a pool? Or how about upgrading an old kitchen with new gleaming marble counter tops? Or how about installing hightech speakers throughout your home? If you’re considering home renovation options, you probably have already asked questions like these. If your renovation is all about increasing your home’s appraisal value, then the answers to some of these questions may be an unequivocal “no.” To help ensure that your renovation money is spent well, real estate experts agree on what the top five home-improvements are to boost resale value. • Renovation No. 1: Redo bathroom. A cracked or dirty toilet that looks old, or doesn’t flush properly is a turn-off. The same goes for a vanity, which should be eye-catching and practical. Installing a vanity that recesses into the wall can save space. Scott O’Dell of the Maple Ridge Rona Home Centre says bathrooms can often be spruced up by small adjustments made by homeowners. “The majority of my home reno guys that I would get would probably be bathrooms,” O’Dell says. “Things like that, people feel like they can do it themselves … replacing toilets, replacing sinks, and things like that.” Correct lighting can also boost value, whether it’s adding a window in the bathroom to add natural lighting or adding new

Renovating the kitchen is at the top of that list as it’s the room where homeowners spend the most time.
light fixtures. Simply updating knobs on vanity cabinets • Renovation No. 2: Upgrade kitchen. Just about all experts agree a kitchen renovation is at the top of that list as it’s the room where homeowners spend the most time. Upgrading to stainless steel appliances and installing counter tops made from stone or granite are fairly simple changes that will improve the kitchen’s look. Details like putting shiny knobs on cabinets or buying a new sink faucet can also make a significant
difference. Another smart kitchen upgrade could be knocking down a full or partial wall to connect the kitchen to a den or living room to make the kitchen feel more spacious. • Renovation No. 3: Go greener. There has been a growing demand, the last four to five years, for green housing, according to commercial and residential real estate experts. Making your home more energy efficient is big a plus, especially anything that helps keep heat in during the winter months and out
during the summer months. Changes can be minimal – like adding storm doors or a ceiling fan in each room. Or they can be substantial, such as double- or triple-paning windows for insulation. O’Dell says annual maintenance helps in this area as well, “whether it’s insulating windows, caulking, replacing bumpers on your doors or replacing filters.” • Renovation No. 4: Built-in speakers. Prospective home buyers are impressed with high-tech homes
that stand out. Installing a centrally wire sound system in your home, with a speaker in every room so you can control music from anywhere in the house with one remote, will definitely improve a home’s value. Installing surround sound in the den or living room, or wherever you watch TV, would make watching movies or sporting events more exciting and add to a home’s value. The school is also running a junior team, which includes players in grades 8, 9 and 10. The Samuel Robertson Technical senior boys are also scheduled to play today, at 12:30 p.m. at Nanaimo District. The organizers are prepared to extend the season as much as they can, or cut down the number of league games to be played, in order to save the football season. Some of the other early sports that are being affected by the strike include volleyball, boys’ soccer, aquatics, crosscountry running and field hockey. How much opportunity is lost to athletes in these sports depends on how long the strike lasts.

oaches are not about to punt the start of the high school football season. The ongoing teachers job action could wreak havoc on school sports if it continues to drag on, but the Pitt Meadows Marauders will kick off their Friday Night Lights games tonight. The Marauders have community coaches, so the senior and junior teams have been preparing for the upcoming season despite the negotiations impasse between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and provincial government. At 7:30 p.m., Pitt will host Mount Boucherie of Kelowna in their first exhibition game. The visitors are a triple-A team, whereas Pitt competes at the double-A level. “It should be a competitive game. We planned some harder games, so the kids get the best out of it,” said Pitt head coach Matt Todd. He had a second exhibition game set up for next week in Kamloops, but that was cancelled because of the strike. Todd is working on getting his kids another game. B.C. Secondary Schools Football has been forced to cancel 23 games during the season’s opening weekend due to the strike. Whether the regular season opener starts on schedule, with Pitt to host the fifthranked Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers on Sept. 19, remains to be seen. “I don’t know yet – it’s week by week,” said Todd. For him, it’s a question of letting the kids play. He has a squad that is loaded with Grade 12s, and some have been playing football for Pitt for five years. “It’s their Grade 12 year, and they’re really looking forward to it,” he said. High school football players sacrifice a good part of their summer vacation preparing for the season, running, hitting the gym, and then running full practices. “These kids have worked pretty hard in the off-season, lifting weights, and this is their last chance.” Mack Dhami is a fullback and linebacker, and one of the guys who has a chance to play at the next level – junior football or CIS. “He has potential – it all depends on how he does this year.”

For most teams lucky or good enough to make the playoffs, their season will end in a loss. It’s a cruel fact of competitive sports, and the agony of post-season defeat can trump feelings of accomplishment from an otherwise successful season. Reflecting on the season past, with their WLA championship series loss to the Victoria Shamrocks at a distance, some of the leaders of the Maple Ridge Burrards put a breakthrough campaign into perspective. “We took a big jump from previous years,” said captain Tyler Codron. “I’m really excited about the years to come.” He said the club’s new coach, Chris Gill, gets a lot of credit for the successful season. The WLA coach of the year had instant credibility with the players because of his own career – 13 seasons in the WLA, including two appearances in the Mann Cup, and another
Paul Evans Photography
Frank Scigliano won rookie of the year and goaltender of the year in the WLA. 173 career games in the NLL. “His way of doing things clicked with us,” said Codron. Gill said a lot of players took the playoff loss to the Shamrocks hard. “We wanted to go farther, and we felt we had the team to go farther,” said the coach. “But we did something few people expected us to.” It took more than 20 years, but Burrards franchise finally played for the championship.
“At the end of the day, we took a pretty big leap,” said Gill. The Shamrocks are a seasoned playoff team, and both men believe that was the difference in the series. “Big time. Experience matters,” said Gill. “Put all the best second-year players in Canada on one team, and Victoria would beat them. Experience will show eventually.” His Burrards gained some of those intangibles.

“Getting a taste of the playoffs … that was really important.” One of the big “what ifs” left after the series was the health of Curtis Dickson. One of the premier scorers in the country, he was hobbled after injuries sustained helping Team Canada win a world championship in field lacrosse. He played in the final series with a separated shoulder and tendinitis in his knee, and was a shadow of himself. The gamebreaker still drew double team defence from the Shamrocks, and that opened the floor for his teammates. One of the main beneficiaries was Ben McIntosh, who led all goal scorers with 27 in 11 playoff games, and was tied for second in playoff scoring with 38 points. “Once he found his game, he was a force,” said Gill. “Real soft hands – you can’t teach what he’s got.” Right behind McIntosh was Riley Loewen with 37 points. While Gill hopes to get Dickson back in the lineup on a regular basis, and back to MVP form, the silver lining to his absence was that it forced the Burrards to develop scoring depth. The Burrards crease should be shored up for years to come. Frankie Scigliano won both rookie of the year and goaltender of the year for the WLA. “That’s where your team starts. He was a huge help for us,” said Codron. “On and off the floor he was a great kid. He was the MVP of the league.” Officially, that honour went to Robert Church of the Burnaby Lakers. Gill was selected coach of the year. “It’s a reflection on the players, and who you’re coaching with,” said Gill. “You don’t do it alone.” Both men see the team getting better after a year off playoff seasoning. “We’re a young team. A lot of guys hadn’t made the playoffs, let alone gone that far in the playoffs,” said Codron. “And everyone has a little bit that they can improve on,” he added. “We want to take that next step toward the Mann Cup.”
