Fab Fondo up by 40 % this year Rubber hits the road Sunday for highly anticipated cycling event ARNE PETRYSHEN

STYLES, LIES AND LETTERS: Poiema Productions is returning to Cranbrook this month with its latest play, the romantic comedy “Sweet Lies.” The Edmonton-based production company, whose founding members include Cranbrook’s Candice Fiorentino, every year bring their latest production through Cranbrook. This year they take the stage at the Key City Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 20. See more, Page 3. Left to right: Candice Fiorentino, Liana Shannon, Brianne Jang, Byron Trevor Martin, Melissa Blackwood.
Organizers say the Gran Fondo is shaping up to be a great ride this Sunday, with registration up 40 per cent from last year’s inaugural race. The weather is also looking like it will cooperate for the 362 confirmed cyclists, with the forecast calling for a sunny high of 27 degrees. Glenn Dobie, chair of the event, said they are pleased with all the riders coming from outside of town. “We have two from Oxford, England, one from Montreal,” he said. “We have half a dozen from Vancouver Island
which is a change from last year.” He added that East Kootenay locals still make up close to 50 per cent of the riders. The rides begin at St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino. Cyclists have a choice of three distances to ride — the 57 km Piccolo Fondo, the 102 km Medio Fondo and the 152 Gran Fondo. The staggered starts begin at 9 a.m. for the Gran, 9:10 for the Medio, and 9:20 for the Piccolo. Dobie said there has also been an increase in those doing the shorter Piccolo ride.

Province eyes longer school year J E F F N AG E L Black Press
Education Minister Peter Fassbender says the province may take extraordinary steps to ensure senior secondary students’ school year is not cut short by the
teachers strike. That could mean adding days to the school calendar later in the year, he said, to ensure Grade 12 students in particular complete their courses and get all the marks they need.
“Do you put it on the end of the year? Do you take it out of Spring Break? Do you take it out of Christmas holidays? My staff are looking at all of the options,” Fassbender said. “It’s going to depend on
how long this drags out. Whatever length of time it takes to get this settled, we will do everything we can to make sure the school year is kept whole for those students.” It’s unclear how the gov-
ernment would finance adding extra days of classes later when all of the $12 million per day in strike savings may be consumed by the province’s offer of $40-a-day payments to parents.

“If they were accumulating the savings, that would be one thing – they would have a fund,” Vancouver School Board chair Patti Bacchus said.

It was a window back into the history of our city and region as Gerry and Chuck McCann sat aboard the vintage trains on Wednesday morning in clothing to match the end of the 19th century. The McCanns travel all over participating in competitive shooting events which use period clothing and period firearms. They were on their way through Cranbrook and stopped by for a photo op at the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel. They had just spent three days at a championship in Kamloops and were on their way back to their home in Birch Hill, Saskatche-
wan. Chuck, who goes by the name of Greybeard at competitions, came in fourth in the senior men’s category. Gerry, who goes by Granny Oneshot, came in third in the senior ladies’. Gerry explained that the clothing they wore on Wednesday was more formal than would be practical for the shooting. “When we’re shooting we dress in different clothes that they would’ve worn,” Gerry explained. “When you’re shooting, you’re dressed more like a cowboy or a cowgirl,” Chuck said. “There’s different classifications.” Gerry said a prairie dress works for the girls.

“The firearms that we shoot are either original or replicas that were built before 1898,” Chuck explained. “They
are all single-action firearms, which means you have to cock it each time.” They fire shotguns,
revolvers and lever-action rifles. The shooting competitions are sometimes scenarios out of action

For me it was because I went out one Sunday when he was trying out his guns and they were actually shooting. She told him she wanted to try a handgun sometime and so she did. “I love it,” she said. “It’s so much fun and the people are just phenomenal. Part of it is the socializing as much as the shooting. We meet people from Canada, the U.S. and all over the world.” The shooting season runs from about midMay to around Thanksgiving.

Show your appreciation for farmers next week A r n e P e t rys h e n
Next week is Farmers Appreciation Week. From Sept. 8 to 15 the B.C. Association of Farmers’ Markets is celebrating the province’s farmers like the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market this Saturday. This is the fifth year for the appreciation week. This year marks the return of the Ode to A Farmer contest. The association is asking everyone to show their appreciation for local farmers by writing a poem. The entry will give you a chance to win $150 spending money for your favourite B.C. farmers’ market.
Elizabeth Quinn, executive director of the farmer’s market association said that she’s seen British Columbians become increasingly passionate about buying local and fresh goods. “Farmers Appreciation Week is an annual time to appreciate our farmers for growing fresh food close to home,” Quinn said. Six winners will be selected in the contest, a grand prize winner of $150, plus a winning poem in each region of B.C. with a prize of $50. Submissions will be accepted online or by mail until Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11:59 p.m. “BC farmers are our
Report says BC Hydro rates third-lowest in North America T r e vo r C r awl ey
Residential electricity rates in British Columbia are the third-lowest in North America, according to an independent report from Hydro-Quebec. Based on 1,000 kilowatt hours per month, Montreal and Winnipeg were the cheapest and runner up, respectively, with Vancouver occupying the third spot. The report also states that residential electricity bills average roughly $40 lower than other cities surveyed. However, despite the report, B.C. electricity rates are going up 28 per cent over the next five years, the first increase of which occurred earlier at the beginning of April. Those rate increases, which were announced in November 2013 by BC Hydro and Energy Minister Bill
Bennett, will go towards substantial reinvestments in aging facilities and infrastructure. “The Province of B.C. and BC Hydro have introduced a 10-year plan to keep rates as low as possible while BC Hydro makes investments in aging assets and new infrastructure that support B.C.’s growing population and economy,” read a statement in a BC Hydro press release. BC Hydro estimates that $2 billion a year will be spent over the next 10 years to refurbish, expand, upgrade and add to the system of dams and wires for generation, transmission and distribution of electricity for B.C.’s residential and commercial needs. BC Hydro, a provincial crown corporation, serves 1.9 million customers across B.C.
best source for fresh, healthy, local food,” said Jon Bell, president of the association. Bell said Farmers Appreciation Week is an opportunity to ex-
press gratitude and recognize the thousands of B.C. farmers contributing to local communities and local economies. Bell urged everyone
to demonstrate support for local farmers and ranchers by choosing local produce during the week. He suggested buying things like wine, cheese, fruit, vegeta-
tion that represents over 125 farmers’ markets across the province and works to support, develop and promote farmers’ markets in all regions of B.C.
Fiorentino, Poiema returning to Cranbrook with latest play Barry Coulter
Poiema Productions is returning to Cranbrook with its latest play, The Edmonton-based theatre company, which includes Cranbrook’s Candice Fiorentino, will be performing the romantic comedy “Sweet Lies” at the Key City Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 20. “Sweet Lies” is written and directed by acclaimed playwright Ken Brown, who also wrote “Anatolia Speaks,” which Fiorentino performed solo last year. Fiorentino spoke to the Townsman from Vancouver, where she is getting set to perform “Anatolia Speaks” at the Vancouver Fringe Festival. “We just mounted (“Sweet Lies”) in Edmonton, and it went really well,” Fiorentino said. “We got great houses, great reviews.” The play is set in a hair salon co-owned by Sylvie, whose mother is having a hard time going through a turbulent divorce. A man who works at the salon is in love with Sylvie, and writes her an anonymous love letter. But Sylvie decides the best thing to do with the letter is pass it on to her lovelorn mom. All sorts of romantic confusion

Poiema (Greek for workmanship or masterpiece) was founded in 2009 by Fiorentino, Melissa Blackwood, Brianne Jang and Sara Vickruck, all four of who are graduates of the Grant MacEwan University Theatre Arts Program. The company is marking five years of producing and present-
ing live theatre — pretty good longevity for a small troupe that tours all over Western Canada. “I think it’s really the girls in the company working together,” Fiorentino said. “We’re the best of friends and that’s why we started the company — we just wanted to work together and create together. I
love how honest and hard-working and driven everyone is in the company. We know how to use each other’s strengths and talk out weaknesses and grow from them.” Working with playwright Ken Brown has also been an asset. “We’re so lucky to have him for the second year in a row,” Fiorentino
said. Previous Poiema productions include “Happily Ever After?”, “The Seminar,” “Middleton: a folk musical,” and “Anatolia Speaks.” Each year, they have brought their original productions to Cranbrook and have performed at the Key City Theatre as well as the Stage Door. All the productions have been quite different from each other, in terms of both style and content. “Out of all our shows, this is one that Cranbrook would really like,” Fiorentino said. “It’s fun, quirky and sweet. It’s very accessible. Fiorentino is heading to Cranbrook as soon as her run at the Vancouver Fringe is done. She recently finished performing “Anatolia Speaks” at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. She plays the cheerful Anatolia, a new Canadian addressing her ESL class, but questions about her past in Bosnia elicit a darker story of struggle, passion, and survival. “Sweet Lies,” featuring Candice Fiorentino, Liana Shannon, Brianne Jang, Byron Trevor Martin, Melissa Blackwood, plays at the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook on Saturday, Sept. 20. Showtime at 8 p.m.

Province eyes longer school year to offset strike Continued from page 1
“But they’re giving away the budget right now to parents that would be otherwise available to pay for that.” As of Thursday, 63 per cent of parents of eligible public school children under 13 had
signed up for the $40 payments, which are expected to be made as a lump sum after the strike ends. Other costs that the province continues to incur while schools are closed include salaries
for school administration as well as support staff with other unions that are eligible to be compensated for pay lost for not crossing teacher picket lines. Support staff costs could hit $5 million a day once all their union
locals ratify new contracts. Education ministry officials said school districts would be consulted on any potential changes to the school year to mitigate the strike. But Bacchus said
Gran Fondo up by 40% Continued from page 1 “Which is really nice,” he said. “I think there are a lot more recreational cyclists who understand that it’s doable — and it’s a ride, not a race.” Dobie thinks that the huge increase in registrants is partly due the event going into its second year, as well as word of mouth from last year’s participants. Dobie also credited the Gran Fondo organizing group’s own campaign to encourage
more recreational cyclists, who look at the event as a festival and celebration of family and friends getting together. “That’s what we want to encourage down the road, getting more recreational cyclists,” he said. “You can take three, four hours, or even longer if you like to do the short ride and still take part in the festivities, listen to the music and have a nice meal.”
Musician Barney Bentall will be performing at the event. “All riders go through the Platzl this year in Kimberley, which is really neat. That’s where the first aid station is. You can pick water, gatorade, cliff bars, fresh muffins.” Dobie said with coffee shops and restaurants open in the Platzl, it will create a sort of Tour de France feel. Dobie also asks vehicle traffic to share the road with the many cy-
clists. The event is presented by Taylor Adams Chartered Accountants and organized by the Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club. A portion of the funds raised from the event will go towards the Cranbrook - Kimberley Rails to Trails Society. It will also go towards the paint the train project which is going on near the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel.

ber – and turned away another 6,000. Demand has surged again now that the strike has spilled into September and pushed back the scheduled start of classes. Bitgood is weighing whether to hire more teachers in response. But it’s risky because a deal or government legislation could send teachers back to work and students back to regular classes, said Bitgood, who emphasized he also wants the public school shutdown to end quickly. There’s only four such independent schools that offer distributed learning to students in the public system, Bitgood said, adding “there’s no way” the industry can meet the demand created by the strike. Another independent online school based in Surrey declined to comment, saying the issue was “too sensitive.”

School District and I am willing to tutor your child in the comfort of your own home,” reads one Craigslist post from an elementary school teacher. Distance learning through independent online schools is another option. The B.C. Online School run out of Kelowna by Heritage Christian Schools has been swamped with three times the normal number applications for distributed learning from students across the province as a result of the strike. “We are overloaded with kids coming to us, particularly those in Grade 12 who want to get a particular course and get their requirements for university,” said superintendent Greg Bitgood. The online school, which is half funded by the province, instructed 3,400 students in its summer school – three times the normal num-
she’s heard nothing so far and predicted it would be disruptive to families that have booked vacations and made other commitments far in advance. “It’s not going to be easy,” she said, noting changes would also require exemptions from School Act requirements. Talk of calendar adjustments is another sign of possible longterm implications from the strike, even though it has only disrupted the first few days of the new school year. Parents have scrambled for limited space for child care, day camps, tutors and even private school placements for their children. Stepping up to meet the demand have been independent schools and, increasingly, public school teachers no longer drawing a regular paycheque who are advertising “tutor” services online. “I work for the Surrey

Learning to be humbled by mystery
W
hen I was younger, life seemed to be so much simpler. Every question had an answer. Every paradox could be solved. Life was less ambiguous and more certain. It reminds me of the sign you see from time to time: “Teenagers! Tired of being hassled by your stupid parents? ACT NOW! Move out, get a job, pay your own bills … while you still know everything!” Sound familiar? Now, many years (many decades) later, I know life is more complex and complicated. Many questions don’t have an answer. Paradoxes abound. Life is ambiguous and filled with contradictions. Our journey through life is a matter of doing the best we can with what we know. We struggle to make sense of our experience in our world. From a spiritual perspective, this is known as mystery. One of my guides in the land of mystery is a Franciscan priest named Richard Rohr. He writes, “My very belief and experience of a loving and endlessly creative God has led me to trust in mystery.” I’ve had the good fortune of getting to know many different people from different traditions. As I’ve made my journey through life, as I’ve struggled to make sense of my experience in my own tiny world, I have learned to love mystery more deeply. I no longer feel the need to change it or make it un–mysterious. This has put me at odds with many other believers I know who seem to need explanations for everything. In my journey, my faith and belief has made me more comfortable with ambiguity. “Hints and guesses,” as T.S. Eliot would
say. At its depth, life is filled with both beauty and pain, with both joy and sorrow at the same time, that I have become suspicious of any easy answers. As Rohr puts it, “I often spend the season of Lent in a hermitage, where I live alone for the whole 40 days. The more I am alone with the Alone, the more I surrender to ambivalence, to happy contradictions and seeming inconsisin myself and almost Rev. Yme tencies everything else, including Woensdregt God. Paradoxes don’t scare me anymore.” While I am not able (or honestly, not really willing either) to spend seven weeks in a hermitage, I often seek times to be alone with the Alone. (How I love that phrase!) I seek times of quiet and contemplation, away from my computer, tablet and phone, away from other people, away from the noisy distractions that are all around us. When I was young, I couldn’t do that. I could never imagine being alone for longer than about five minutes. I couldn’t tolerate ambiguity. My education trained me to have a lust for answers and explanations. Now that I’ve reached 61, it’s all quite different. I no longer believe this is a quid– pro–quo universe. I have spent too much time with hurting and broken people. I have worked with too many failed marriages. I have spent time with too many people addicted to something — whether it be alcohol, drugs, or work. I have faced my own dilemmas too many times, and I have been loved gratuitously after too many failures. The universe is not a place where we get “something for something”
(which is what quid pro quo means). It’s not a tit–for–tat world, even when we try to make it that way. To continue with Rohr, “Whenever I think there’s a perfect pattern, further reading and study reveal an exception. Whenever I want to say ‘only’ or ‘always,’ someone or something proves me wrong. My scientist friends have come up with things like ‘principles of uncertainty’ and dark holes. They’re willing to live inside imagined hypotheses and theories.” Too many religious folks insist on answers that are always true. We love closure, resolution and clarity, while thinking that we are people of “faith”! How strange that the very word “faith” has come to mean its exact opposite. We are called to trust, not certainty. “People who have really met the Holy are always humble. It’s the people who don’t know who usually pretend that they do. People who’ve had any genuine spiritual experience always know they don’t know. They are utterly humbled before mystery. They are in awe before the abyss of it all, in wonder at eternity and depth, and a Love, which is incomprehensible to the mind.” This kind of humility in the face of mystery seems to me to be the beating heart of an authentic God experience. Sadly, it is absent from much of our religious conversation today. My growing sense is that seeking and resting in the depths of Mystery ought to be not just the very task of religion, but at the heart of a fully human life.” Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Opinion/Events
Letters to the Editor
I want to share my expression of my appreciation to Jim Ogilvie’s family, from a community volunteer and non-profit organization perspective. I don’t think it is easy being a mayor — being asked to attend and be present at so many events. It was because of this personal impression that I never invited the Mayor and Gail to many of the functions I coordinated — only the Lee Haskell/Spark Christmas Parties. Jim always delivered encouraging words to our team, who worked hard to improve the centre, and to our youth, confirming their importance in our community. It was the events that we put on that we didn’t invite the busy Ogilvies to, that their presence surprised me. One that really sticks in my mind was “Youthstock” in Rotary, a music competition for the youth bands. It was so cold, with a wind blowing through the park. I was shocked to see Gail and Jim sitting in lawn chairs trying to keep warm under a blanket. I thought they would only stay a while — who could sit in that cold wind? But they stayed to the very end. And again at the JulyFest Band Reunion fundraiser at the Centre, there were Gail and Jim, sitting at a table, having a drink. Let’s not forget the Kimberley Fall Fair
— my first year — in the hectic crowd I saw Jim and Gail, supporting the event. It is no coincidence that the Youth Centre is in its 20th year, the longest lasting youth centre in B.C., and approximately 36 years for the Kimberley Community Fair Fall. I think Jim truly enjoyed attending Kimberley events and he sincerely cared about the success of the people and the community. These displays of endless community support did not go unnoticed and will not be forgotten. Thanks Gail and Jim. Rest in peace, Jim Ogilvie. I am writing this letter to the people of Kimberley, especially to the City Council. On Friday, August 29, I was in Kimberley for an old friend’s funeral, Former Mayor Jim Ogilvie. I heard that they had named the old dump road after him. In my opinion that was an insult. You have a beautiful Convention and Athletic Centre due to the work and diligence of James E. Ogilvie.
So people of Kimberley, show a little class and name this centre after a great gentleman, James Ogilvie. John Shotgun Stone Former Kimberley resident

Although they had no direct connection to the bookstore, these two were not only friends of the Woods but card-carrying members of the Communist Party. The charges? Someone somewhere had dusted off an old state law known as ‘criminal syndicalism’ — an antiquated statute making it illegal “to do acts of physical violence to effect industrial and political change.” Much like their lawyer would be a year later, these four defendants were held incommunicado, and given ridiculous high bails. While the defendants were being denied their basic civil rights, the police let a reporter photograph the evidence. With no proper evidence room at the time, all the books seized during the raids were stacked together in an empty jail cell. The photo conveyed the image that it was the book themselves that were locked up and awaiting trial. Which, in a way, is exactly what happened. But that comes later. First comes one of the most complex and bizarre trials of the 20th century. Next week! Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

Red, black & blue Americans edge Ice in scrappy affair
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
The Kootenay Ice opened the 2014 WHL pre-season with a 5-4 loss at the hands of the Tri-City Americans in Kennewick, Wa. Thursday night. Parker Bowles scored the winning marker for the Americans 5:18 into the second period. The tally gave Tri-City a twogoal lead and that’s all the hosts needed. Luke
Philp cut the Americans advantage to one midway through the second frame, but a scoreless third period left the Ice on the bottom end of this one. “I thought our guys responded really well in the third period,” said Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill over the phone from Kennewick following the game. “It took us 40 minutes to kind of get our legs underneath us

and get into game mode but the guys did well.” The scorekeepers were kept busy in this game with nine goals between the two teams along with a combined 140 minutes in penalties. The Ice were tagged with 67 minutes worth of infractions while the Americans racked up 73 of their own. During pre-season games, players are regulated by the “one-fight” rule, meaning one dust up results in a player’s immediate ejection from the game. “There’s no reason for it — it’s exhibition,” McGill said. “There’s not really a rivalry with our team. I think it’s basically guys trying to prove themselves a little bit with their teammates. “This is a normal occurrence in exhibition and I’m not sure that I know the answer why. I guess we’ll say boys will be boys.” The second period served as the stage for the majority of the action with two scraps breaking out.
Kootenay’s Ryan Chynoweth dropped the gloves with Americans forward Austyn Playfair to open the festivities. Shortly thereafter, Ice forward Kyle O’Connor got into it with Tri-City defenceman Riley Hillis. All four were sent to the showers early. The card closed 25 seconds into the final frame as Ice defenceman Tanner Faith took on Americans forward Maxwell James. Both players were handed five-minute fighting majors along with game misconducts as they joined Chynoweth, O’Connor, Playfair and Hillis in the dressing rooms. Lucas Nickels opened the scoring for the Americans just over a minute into the first period before veteran Ice forwards Philp and Jon Martin returned fire with two goals less than four minutes apart. It was a frantic first period that saw the teams exchange blows
Cranbrook is quickly establishing its place in the world of wakeboarding thanks to three local water sport athletes. Dagen Duczek, Ryder Duczek and Colden Thompson all competed at the Water Ski and Wakeboard Alberta (WSWA) Provincial Championships Aug. 23 at Alix Lake, Alta., turning in strong performances in their respective categories. Thompson, 17, finished third in the open division. Ryder, 9, took home first place in the U-11 division while his younger brother Dagen, 7, claimed first place in the U-8 division. The open division pits riders of all ages in competition. Thompson was the youngest competitor in the division and put together
two strong runs to claim the bronze medal. Earlier this summer, Thompson earned a bronze medal at the Canadian National Wakeboard Championships held Aug. 17 to 20 in Bala, Ont. The Alberta provincial bronze medal concludes a strong year of competition for Thompson, this his first year of organized competitive wakeboarding. Apart from claiming first at the provincial championship, Ryder earned first in the beginner division July 19 at Jackfish Lake, Alta., the third stop on the WSWA Wake Tour. The nineyear-old Duczek kick-started his season with a second-place performance in the U-11 division at the first stop on the WSWA Wake Tour June 14 in Chestermere, Alta. Dagen’s first-place provincial performance
also capped a successful season for the young wakeboarder. The seven-year-old Cranbrook native placed second behind his older brother at Jackfish Lake after topping his brother in the U-11 division to start the season in Chestermere, Alta. The Duczek brothers and Thompson all train right here at home in the Kootenays. The three spend their summers at Tie Lake, located approximately 52 km southeast of Cranbrook. The 2014 WSWA Provincial Championships featured more than 40 riders from B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan. Alix Lake, host of the 2014 WSWA Provincial Championships, is located 55 km northeast of Red Deer, Alta. Check out Page 9 for more photos from the WSWA Provincial Championship.
on the scoreboard, prior to exchanging fisticuffs later on. Tri-City’s Brian Williams potted two goals in the opening frame and Chynoweth rounded out the scoring on the evening for the Ice. Kootenay’s Wyatt Hoflin and Tri-City’s Eric Comrie went the distance between the pipes. Hoflin made 34 saves while his counterpart Comrie stopped 25 of the 29 pucks directed his way. Though a number of veterans dressed for tonight’s game against the Americans, this was also the first major junior contest for a number of players, including but not limited to, Cale Fleury, Jared Legien and Vince Loschiavo. “I’m not going to single anybody out,” McGill said. “I think some guys were a little overwhelmed in their first game and some guys got better as the game went on. Hopefully that will continue.” It’s a quick turnaround for both teams as the Ice face the Portland Winterhawks this afternoon at 4 p.m. The Americans will get a few more hours rest as they host the Red Deer Rebels at 8 p.m.
“The quick turnaround isn’t going to affect us at all,” McGill said. “We’ll get an opportunity to put the other guys into the lineup that didn’t play tonight. “The guys that played tonight will be extremely happy to get on the ice again tomorrow because they now are game ready. They now know what to expect. It’s way different playing intrasquad games and practices than it is in real games against opponents and those guys will be better tomorrow.” As of press time,
coach McGill had yet to decide on his starting netminder for today’s tilt with the Winterhawks. Jayden Sittler held down the backup role behind Hoflin Thursday, while Keelan Williams watched the game from above. The Ice scratched seven players Thursday night against the Americans. Forwards Matt Alfaro, Levi Cable and Austin Vetterl all had the night off as did defencemen Tyler King, Dylan Overdyk, Rinat Valiev and goaltender Williams.

Hockey Canada committed to analytics with new staff Former Ottawa 67’s associate coach Misha Donskov newest Hockey Canada hire

Hockey Canada doesn’t want to fall behind the rest of the sport in the analytics department. That much was clear with Wednesday’s hiring of Misha Donskov as manager of hockey operations, analytics and video. Donskov will be primarily tasked with video responsibilities, but Hockey Canada president and CEO Tom Renney believes the former Ottawa 67’s associate coach has more to offer. “I think there’s an opportunity to tap into his knowledge with respect to analytics and what might (be) best to measure, whether it’s on-ice performance, whether it’s how we put our camps together, whether it’s the numbers of people we put in our camps,’’ Renney said in a phone interview Thursday. “He has an analytical mind, and having said that he certainly pays attention to the analytics of the game. I think there’s lots of ways and means with which to incorporate his skill to that end.’’ Analytics go beyond
traditional statistics such as goals, assists and plus/minus to measure things like puck possession, quality of competition and where players are on the ice. Donskov replaces Andrew Brewer, who left his job as Hockey Canada’s video coach to join Mike Babcock’s staff with the Detroit Red Wings. Babcock heaped tons of credit on Brewer during the Olympic gold-medal run in Sochi for ensuring Team Canada was well-prepared along the way. Brewer got some analytics started before he left, and that’s where Donskov picks up. Renney, who worked as an assistant under Babcock last season and was head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers before that, said he has an appreciation for analytics from those jobs. In replacing Bob Nicholson in July, the 59-year-old didn’t see analytics as a weak point for Hockey Canada but considers the hiring of Donskov a way to strengthen it. “We knew that because of the skills that he brought to the table
that that was an avenue we could even explore that much deeper,’’ Renney said. “I don’t know that analytics is always solution-based, but it certainly has a great deal of information to it and really in-depth information. I think with that in mind I wanted to make sure that we could at least pursue that to a point with the skill that was required. Misha delivers on that, we think.’’ Donskov had recently been promoted to assistant GM of the Ontario Hockey League’s 67’s after spending two seasons as an associate coach. Before that he was an assistant coach/ assistant GM with the London Knights. “The more diversified you are, the more valuable you are in a number of different ways,’’ said Renney, who cited conversations with 67’s owner Jeff Hunt and OHL commissioner David Branch as reasons he chose Donskov. “Certainly he has a job description and it would suggest video, but it does go beyond that. I think we’re going to see his skills over time — not unlike myself, I hope — where we’re
able to apply ourselves in those other areas.’’ Even though Donskov has hockey operations in his job title, he won’t have to help replace Brad Pascall, who left to be an assistant GM under Brad Treliving with the Calgary Flames. Instead, those duties belong to vice-president of hockey operations and national teams Scott Salmond. After a career of coaching in the NHL, being the president and CEO of Hockey Canada and piecing these things together is another challenge for Renney, who said he was enjoying the learning portion of his new job. Renney and his lieutenants don’t have any time to waste with the world junior championship in Montreal and Toronto approaching. Canada hasn’t won a medal since 2012 and hasn’t won gold since 2009. In preparation for the tournament, Renney is involved behind the scenes but understands the expectations that will follow. “At the end of the day, win and it’s everybody else’s program, lose and it’s mine,’’ he said.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My cousin is 53 years old and is in and out of jobs. He has no place to go and parked his van on my property on the condition that he stay no more than five months. He asked for permission to use my laundry equipment and electricity. But he’s already stayed 10 months, uses my facilities without permission and leaves things all over my front yard. On several occasions, I kicked him out, and he refused to leave. Several of my neighbors reported a squatter in the residential area, and the police arrived to deal with the complaint. They only request that he leave. But he’s still here. How do I get rid of him? -- Cousin of a Squatter Dear Cousin: Depending on your local law, you can call the police and tell them your cousin is trespassing on your property, in which case, they may be able to forcibly make him move. Otherwise, you may need to sue him to get him evicted. In either case, we recommend you consult an attorney about what you can do. Dear Annie: I am amazed that women do not realize that one of the primary reasons they are not being asked out is simply because they insist on traveling in packs. Men do not like to break into a group of women just to ask one of them to dance or to chat. Some years ago, I did an experiment with a female friend, asking her to place herself alone against a wall in a bar with her arms behind her. It took less than five minutes for someone to come up and ask if he could buy her a drink. Meanwhile, as I looked around, I saw many men standing about and many women in groups chatting away with no man even close to them. Wake up, women. You have the ability to change your dating success pronto. -- PB Watching Dear PB: A lone woman might indeed attract more attention, but not always for the right reasons. Women travel in packs for their own protection. Not every man is trustworthy. A woman who is alone at a party, for example, runs a real risk of being assaulted when she leaves, if not before, especially if liquor is involved. If a woman chooses to separate herself from her friends to get attention, that’s fine, as long as she lets her friends know where she is and with whom. Dear Annie: I was very touched by the letter from “L.A., Calif.” I, too, am a single mother of two children. My kids were 4 and 8 when I divorced their dad. He had supervised visitation, which he chose to give up. Our children have not seen their father in 10 years. Is there resentment? I would say more hurt than anything. He chose everything else over his family. For a long time, my daughter has wanted to change her name from her father’s last name. My son doesn’t seem to care. Now that they both are adults, they can legally change their name without parental consent. I think your advice was great, but I don’t believe a name change needs to have anything to do with Mom’s animosity toward her ex. I think it is her intent to give her children a connection to what is constant and stable in their lives: their mother. Taking her maiden name will help them feel more attached to someone who means so much to them and won’t abandon them. My kids have thrived, are mature beyond their years and surround themselves with positive friends. I have absolutely no regrets. Being granted total physical and legal custody was the best gift the judge could have given us. -- Been There, Done That, Happier for It Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. With so many advertising mediums dividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching consumers. Why? Simply put, newspapers reach more people, more often. Highly portable and highly visible, newspaper ads go with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely to be on their minds when they’re in the market for related products or services. When it comes to spending your advertising dollars, make the choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.
