Teachers hit hard by strike Some have taken to consigning their clothes By Phil M elnyc h u k a n d Ne il Co r b e t t newsroom@mapleridgenews.com
The depths of the desperation some teachers have reached are on display on the racks of a woman’s clothing consignment store in downtown Maple Ridge. In the last few weeks, at least four teachers have brought in items to Crazy About Clothes, so they can be sold on consignment and teachers can raise some badly needed cash. “Someone brought in a beautiful piece of jewelry that was a gift, and she brought it in,” said store owner Nancy McConnell. “Some teachers are consigning their clothes to me because they need the money.” McConnell has owned the store for three and a half years, and this August was her worst month since. Downtown still not so vibrant Members of council call for more action By Nei l Corbe tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
Members of council expressed impatience with the pace of improvement in downtown Maple Ridge on Monday, as city hall staff presented council with a Vibrant Downtown report. Most of the hour-long discussion centered on the many drug addicted
and mentally ill people who frequent the area. “We’ve got to stop coping, and we’ve got to solve,” said Coun. Mike Morden. He added that it’s time for an action plan, rather than more study – as city hall staff recommended in the report. “We don’t need more study. Put together a proper plan, and act on it,” he said. “I want to see us take a much more proactive approach on it.” The report called for a social impact assessment study, as one of its

four recommendations. Morden noted that 30 people were recently moved from a camp on Ministry of Transportation lands, “with no plans for where they will go.” “It’s not good enough to have the RCMP chasing them around,” he said. Councillors questioned Ridge Meadows RCMP Supt. Dave Fleugel about enforcement in the downtown. Coun. Corisa Bell asked how many hours local police dedicate to

“the issues downtown. “Where is downtown on the list of priorities,” she asked, adding people in the area report police saying their complaints are not a priority. “The whole community is sensitive to the issues in the downtown,” Bell said. “Taxpaying citizens feel neglected.” Coun. Bob Masse questioned how proactive the downtown foot patrols can be, noting that he has seen patrols walk past a group of people trespassing on private property. See Downtown, 20

www.mapleridgenews.com - THE NEWS -- Wednesday, September 10, 2014 -- 3 Ali Wakeling and Betty Levens do much of the legwork behind the local Terry Fox Run. Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS
Passing the Terry Fox torch By Colleen Flan ag a n cflanagan@mapleridgenews.com
A
fter 15 years of organizing the local Terry Fox Run, Betty Levens will be passing the torch.
Starting next year, Pitt Meadows resident Ali Wakeling will continue Levens’ legacy. “It feels great. I’ve had a wonderful time doing it all these years,” Levens said. “I’m getting too old to do this. I’m 79/ Come on, do I have to do it again?” She laughed, adding that she will continue to help in other capacities. But she will miss the people she’s worked with. “We’ve been really lucky because we’ve got so many people in the group who have done the same thing year after year. So you just phone and ask, ‘Are you going to do this?’ And then
you don’t have to worry anymore. It makes it so much easier.” Levens has been an ardent organizer of the event since 1999, the year Ali and her husband, Sandy, who lost his own battle to cancer last year, started helping out. Sandy Wakeling was well known in the community as another dedicated organizer of the run. “He and I used to sit down, just the two of us and [the run] grew from there,” said Levens. “He loved this community and he loved this event,” continued Ali. “It should be him doing this. But I am happy to work with this team. It is a great group of people,” she said. Wakeling remembers herself as a 10-year-old impressionable girl watching the Marathon of Hope on television with her family in Port Coquitlam. Now she is taking it upon herself to make sure the next generation of Canadians and those new to the country don’t forget the Terry Fox story. This Sunday’s run starts and finishes at the Hammond Community Centre soccer field at

20601 Westfield Avenue. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and the run starts at 10 a.m. with 10-kilometre, five km and one km route for people of all abilities. Cyclists, wheelchairs, strollers, roller blades and dogs on leashes are all welcome. Last year, 658 people took part in the event, raising more than $29,000. There is no entry fee and no minimum donation. “It is a rain or shine event and I think it is important for people to remember that Terry ran through all kinds of weather while on those crappy shoes,” said Wakeling. Cancer survivor Trina Munday will be speaking this year, along with Fred Fox, Terry’s brother. There is a little anxiety between Wakeling and Levens about the teacher’s strike and how it will affect fundraising this year. In addition to the usual build up in the schools for the community run, there is the Terry Fox national School Run Day, this year to be held on Sept. 24. “They make more money in the schools than we do now in this area,” Levens said. “You

know how many times I ask people,’Do you want to make a donation? [And they say), ‘Oh I give it to my grandchildren.’” The money still ends up in the same place. However, Wakeling thinks that even if the strike ends, there won’t be a run for students on the national school run day this year. There won’t be enough time. But she is hopeful that schools will still hold their runs either later in the year or even the spring of next year. “The foundation is encouraging that, promoting that, particularly schools in British Columbia [that] are very important to the foundation,” said Wakeling. Levens has no advice for Wakeling. She is confident the right person is taking charge. As for Wakeling, she is ready for the challenge, already planning big changes for next year’s run to include Pitt Meadows. Plus, she laughs, she already has Levens on speed dial. She knows where to find her. • For more information go to www.terryfox.org.

Teachers get tainted Timbits Record plate number of van By Nei l Corbe tt ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
Teachers on strike in Maple Ridge received boxes of doughnut holes last week that they believe were soaked with urine. The boxes were dropped off at the picket lines at four different schools last Wednesday morning. The teachers contacted police about the foul smelling Timbits.
THE NEWS/files
The boxes were dropped off at four separate schools where teachers were picketing last week. George Serra, president of the Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association, said teachers provided
police with a licence plate for a purple Astro van that they believe was connected to the dubious
delivery. “It’s horrible, but I didn’t want to sensationalize it,” Serra said. Many members of the public and union supporters drop off food at local picket lines as a show of support. A Ridge Meadows RCMP spokesman said police have not confirmed that the food had been tampered with. In June, police investigated an incident where someone left garbage and dog feces outside a school in Colwood on Vancouver Island.

For the second time in as many months, merchandise was stolen from a jewelry store at Valley Fair Mall.
A male suspect grabbed two Joe Rodeo watches, worth a combined $3,000, from a display case at Ryan Jewellers, at 11:45 a.m. last Wednesday. Dhanh Cao, owner of the jew-
elry store, said the suspect, said the theft was recorded on security cameras and police have been notified. He said such thefts occur at his store four to five times a year.

Lip service Members of Maple Ridge council are frustrated by the lack of progress in downtown development. Staff presented council with a “Vibrant Downtown” report on Monday, when discussion turned to the many drug addicted and mentally ill people who frequent the area. Coun. Mike Morden, who will run for mayor this fall, wants the district to stop coping with the problem and solve it. Easier said than done. Morden wants an action plan, not another study, and for the district to be “proactive.” The district has had an action plan since 2003. Coun. Corisa Bell questioned where the downtown issues lie on the RCMP’s list of priorities. Coun. Robert Masse pointed a finger at the provincial and federal governments, claiming they are ignoring the issue of homelessness. The latter has plagued Maple Ridge’s downtown for much of the past decade, even before the Salvation Army opened its emergency shelter at the area’s gateway. The shelter is not the problem, although many believe its location hurts businesses, and no doubt has had a negative affect on the surrounding neighbourhood. But the shelter does more good than harm. The open drug use and prostitution, thefts and homeless camps around it are signs that more needs to be done. Maple Ridge council has done little to address the issues other than hiring private security guards to patrol the streets, choosing to believe that new benches and bollards would clean them up. But, as another municipal election looms, it’s time to stop blaming others and do some work. It starts with housing. A homelessness task force in Abbotsford just recommended a housing-first strategy with an ideal target of 50 or 60 low-barrier housing units. It wants to hire a co-ordinator to carry out the full plan, which includes other recommendations, such as outreach and prevention programs, and creating a rental bank. Maple Ridge council could start with providing at least some ideas for solutions, rather than just paying lip service to what has become a problem that now defines the downtown. Here’s one: get a little tougher with the unsightly premises bylaw and not allow owners of derelict properties to do nothing for months, even years at a time. An action plan is nothing without action. – The News

Factory model fading for schools VICTORIA – The B.C. Teachers’ Federation’s latest demand, for binding arbitration on selected pocketbook issues of its members, is going nowhere. This follows months of the union’s insistence on mediation. First a B.C. Supreme Court judge met with B.C. Views both sides and walked Tom Fletcher away. Then the BCTF’s preferred choice, Vince Ready, agreed that mediation won’t fix the current version of the mess he last examined in 2007. BCTF president Jim Iker announced the arbitration gambit on Friday, in one of the webcasts he uses to rally the union’s exhausted membership. Education Minister Peter Fassbender replied that with five minutes’ notice to the government’s chief negotiator and lacking specifics on what would be subject to arbitration, the proposal would forfeit the government’s mandate to control costs. “This government will not raise taxes in order to provide a settlement to one union that does not reflect what the other public sector has done,” Fassbender said. In short, there will be a negotiated settlement, eventually. The union chose to begin the strike, and now must find a way to end it. The government’s position in this dispute is unlike any of the many that preceded it. And it points the way to an
evolution of education that cannot be stopped. The announcement of a $40-a-day payment for days lost during a fall strike for children under 13 was greeted with scorn by the BCTF and its echo chambers. Parents won’t be bribed, they want school, not daycare, it’s an insult, went the refrain. Before the first week of the fall strike was over, nearly two thirds of eligible parents had enrolled, faced with pickets at their schools and real and mounting child care and tutoring costs. The union executive, collecting their hefty salaries while teachers do without even token strike pay, said members who are parents should refuse the money. Some B.C. teachers have begun advertising tutoring services online. With distance learning and other online education options expanding in all 60 public school districts, the digital revolution is unfolding quickly. The B.C. government made a couple of announcements in April, one about moving to digital versions of textbooks and another about a digital merger of 1,600 school libraries with public and postsecondary schools. Growth of options accelerates. Largely drowned out by the noise of 1970s-style industrial labour strife, the B.C. public school curriculum is being refashioned for this new age. Among its goals is to “allow teachers and students the flexibility to personalize their learning experience to better meet each student’s individual strengths and needs.”
One of B.C.’s early models for self-directed learning is Thomas Haney secondary in Maple Ridge, where senior high students are expected to make their own way through course work, learning to manage their own time. It was here that the first couple of Grade 12 students showed up last week to begin making up for lost time from the strike that set in last spring. Self-directed study has become a crash course. Private schools are also swamped with applications from Grade 12 students looking for particular courses they will need by next year. In the short term, Fassbender says the lost strike days will likely have to be restored to the school schedule.
“TIn the short term, Fassbender says the lost strike days will likely have to be restored to the school schedule. “Do you put it on at the end of the year? Do you take it out of spring break? Do you take it out of Christmas holidays? My staff are looking at all of the options,” Fassbender said. In the longer term, the whole factory model of school is on the way out. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

THE NEWS/letters Dock MLA’s pay? Editor, The News: Re: MLA ‘open’ to discuss issues (The News). Isn’t it rather hypocritical that our teachers were arbitrarily docked 10 per cent of their pay recently for allegedly not completing their full duties, yet our MLAs have collectively conspired to lock their doors on their constituents, and blatantly refuse to answer questions, letters and e-mails on this very important issue? Editor, The News: Marc Dalton, MLA Maple Ridge-Mission, it’s no secret that you used to be a teacher and that you crossed your own picket line when a strike was called. You have tried to justify this action by stating that the courts had ruled that the strike was illegal.
Now here we are in 2014 and the teachers have been forced into a strike position once again. In today’s case, the courts have ruled twice in favor of the teachers and have said that class size must be restored to the teachers collective bargaining, and not a word from you about the
Morris Goodchild: Re: Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows parents protest school closures (Letters). The union is doing a fine job of insuring that its members will be left attempting to pick up the pieces. As an ex-union member, I would attend the meetings and listen to what they wanted us to believe, only to return to work the next day to discover that the majority did not agree with what they wanted us to believe. I have no reason to believe it is any different today. Please prove that this wasn’t staged.
Do you approve? Phil Gray: Graduation transition workers have been cut. This valuable service helped our grads find out about scholarships and post-secondary programs. Our MLAs, Doug Bing and Marc Dalton, have been silent on these cuts. We can only suppose they approve. Do you?
Editor, The News: I just thought you might want to know how the B.C. teachers strike continues to affect the graduates of 2014. Not only did it affect many of their graduation events and ceremonies in June – the most important event in their young lives – but now in September the strike is affecting the second most important event for them: postsecondary education. Students are being denied access to the funds that were to help pay for the cost of their post-secondary education. For example, bursaries that were awarded in June and have to be re-

So these students that worked so hard in order to earn these funds and make it possible to attend post-secondary education are now being adversely affected by the action of the teachers that supposedly care about them. It is sad to see that so many students are being hurt in so many different ways by a negotiating system that is so out-of-date and so out-of-touch with reality. Terry Stanley Maple Ridge

Province rejects binding arbitration Strike from front
Business has picked up a bit recently. “But not for school. Many teachers shop at her store, which is how she gets to know them. Now, they’re dropping items off for sale for some quick cash. The store sells used women’s clothes, shoes, purses and jewelry. “The teachers that are off are not getting paid. In other strikes, workers at least got strike pay, she added. There is no end to the current strike in sight. Teachers are voting today on a plan that could re-open schools almost immediately. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation is holding a province-wide plebiscite, asking its members to accept binding arbitration to end their labour battle with the province. The vote is going ahead, although Education Minister Peter Fassbender has already said the province will not agree to enter binding arbitration. He said Tuesday that the vote is intended to make it appear the government does not want a settle-
ment. Fassbender added that binding arbitration is “not in the cards, and asked the union to instead suspend its strike until the two sides could get to a settlement through mediation. The Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association president said arbitration is probably the only way a settlement will be reached. “It looks that way. In 18 months, we haven’t seen the government budge one iota, said George Serra. He added that arbitration is a process that could take six to eight months, but the strike would be suspended as soon as both sides agreed to enter it. In arbitration, each side declares its position, and a neutral third party attempts to find a fair compromise. The negotiating parties are bound to accept the decisions. “Binding arbitration is scary for both parties, said Serra. However, he said the advantage is that the new school year would begin,
and the two sides would eventually have an agreement. With a positive vote on the matter, he said the union is reaffirming to the public and parents that the BCTF is bargaining in good faith. “There is one group keeping kids out of school. The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District issued a statement this week, calling on the two parties to enter arbi-
tration, and for the provincial government to commit to full funding of boards of education to cover the costs of the new contract. “The theatrics, vitriol, game playing, personal attacks and politics that have characterized this and previous rounds of bargaining between teachers and the provincial government are, quite simply, unprofessional and unacceptable, said the board.

A farmhouse in Pitt Meadows was destroyed in a suspicious fire early Sunday. Flames were shooting high into the sky and the home on Old Dewdney Trunk Road near Hale Road was engulfed when the fire department arrived after receiving a call around 6 a.m. Fire chief Don Jolley doesn’t know who called in the fire.
The property is located on Twin Berry Farms and was being rented out to a couple, said owner Newton Sahota. Neighbours referred to the property as a “drug house that was frequented by many unsavoury people. Pitt fire chief Don Jolley said seven people at the scene admitted they were sleeping inside when fire started. Two other people were known to live there, but were not present.

‘Tough to get out vote’ Candidates from 11
“I don’t believe it does make a difference.” In the 2011 election, 13 people ran for six spots on Pitt Meadows council, half the number of candidates in Maple Ridge. Voter turnout was 30 per cent, compared to Maple Ridge’s 25 per cent. Neither does it dissuade fringe candidates from entering who may be discouraged by having to get 10 people to sign their papers, she adds. Walters does agree, though, it’s tough to get

people out to vote. “Everyone’s willing to complain, but they’re not willing to come out and vote. Why aren’t we having online voting? I really don’t know how you can get people to come out and vote.” Pitt Meadows Coun. Dave Murray says the requirement to have 10 names does weed out flippant candidates and keeps the more serious ones. That’s the main benefit of such a clause, he adds. And Murray hasn’t heard of those who sign a candidate’s forms worrying about being labelled as supporters of that candidate. “It’s never been an issue.”

For Maple Ridge Coun. Bob Masse, though, requiring two or 10 names on candidate nomination forms makes no difference. Requiring 10 names, “I don’t think it would limit the number of people who would run.” Masse said he can’t think of any candidate who ran last time who couldn’t have rounded up 10 supporters to sign the candidate’s forms. “I don’t think it will be a significant influence on the number of people who will run.” Neither will it play a factor in determining voter turnout. If anything, with lots of people running, voters might pay more attention.

Delay dementia—could hearing aids be the answer? Seniors who have untreated hearing loss may be at an increased risk for developing dementia, a loss of brain function that can affect memory, thinking, language, judgment and behavior. This is the finding of a study conducted by researchers from the Division of Otology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The study included 639 people whose hearing and
cognitive abilities were tested over a period of time, starting in 1990 and concluding in 2008. Researchers found that study participants who had hearing loss at the beginning of the study were significantly more likely to develop dementia by the end of the study. How might hearing loss and dementia be connected? Investigators aren’t sure, but they think a common pathology may underlie both conditions, or possibly
the strain of decoding sounds over the years may overwhelm the brains of people with hearing loss, leaving them more vulnerable to dementia. The article concludes that, whatever the cause, these findings may offer a starting point for further research as to whether interventions, even as simple as hearing aids, could delay or prevent dementia by improving patients’ hearing.

AS SEEN ON ARKETPLA CE C’S M Thanks Bruce I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optometrist. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value.
Decline in gang killings CFSEU community report notes more big cases go to trial in 2015 B y J eff Nagel Black Press
A recent drop in gang violence now has B.C.’s anti-gang police unit looking to the courts for closure on several major outstanding cases. Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit chief officer Kevin Hackett said the “significant decline” in organized crime homicides comes after a series of highprofile investigations leading to charges, as well as new initiatives to prevent or reduce gang membership. His comments were published last week in the unit’s 2014 annual community report. The number of gang-related killings in B.C. fell to 13 last year from 18 in 2012 and has been cut by almost two-thirds from the 36 gang murders committed in 2009. Nearly 100 organized crime figures or gang-related individuals were arrested and charged last year, with more than 270 offences in close to 30 B.C. communities, Hackett said. The report’s release came after the province announced policing
cuts that will pare the CFSEU budget by $2.8 million. Much public attention has focused on the Surrey Six murder trial, which concluded in early July. A decision is expected to be handed down Oct. 2 in the case against two of the men accused of killing two innocents along with four other targeted victims. But a separate murder conspiracy trial for Red Scorpions gang member Jamie Bacon is slated to begin next May for his alleged role in the Surrey Six slayings. And there could be two other major gang murder trials in 2015 as well. A trial is expected to begin next year in Kelowna, where Jonathan Bacon was gunned down three years ago. Jujhar Khun-Khun, Michael Kerry Hunter Jones and Jason Thomas McBride face firstdegree murder charges, as well as four counts each of attempted murder. CFSEU officials say next year could also see the start of a trial against Cory Vallee, accused in two murders – the 2009 shooting in Langley of Red Scorpion Kevin LeClair and the 2008 shooting in Burnaby of Jonathan Barber, who was mistakenly targeted because he was installing a stereo in a car owned by a Bacon brother. Vallee, who was arrested in August in Mexico and quickly
returned to B.C., also faces conspiracy charges in relation to a UN Gang plot to kill the Bacon brothers. Hackett said a joint CFSEU-IHIT investigation also led to murder conspiracy guilty pleas last year against six UN Gang members and associates. He said the gangsters had been “ruthlessly hunting” members of the Bacon crime group in 200809, a period during which police efforts also prevented at least two more murders. “They displayed blatant disregard for public safety in what Crown counsel referred to as ‘human safaris’ while they targeted their rivals.” The six received sentences of seven to 14 years each, and although UN Gang leader Barzan Tilli-Choli could be out late in 2018 due to time served, he is expected to then be deported to Iraq. Hackett was optimistic the CFSEU’s edgy End Gang Life campaign will help persuade more gang members to reform. It plays on the emotions of gangsters with imagery of loved ones left behind after they’re dead. The annual report includes statistics on the ethnicity of gang murder victims, where the bodies are typically found (31 per cent inside a car), as well as seasonal patterns in gang violence.
HAYWARD LAKE RESERVOIR LOWER WATER LEVELS The Hayward Lake reservoir water level has been lowered to accommodate annual maintenance on the Ruskin Dam spillway gates. The reservoir is currently at an elevation of approximately 36.5 metres and will remain at this elevation until September 19, 2014. Lower than average water levels have exposed steep shorelines and slippery slopes along Hayward Beach and the entire reservoir shore. All beaches and the boat launch are currently closed and fenced off for public safety. The picnic grounds are open and available for public use.

Transit referendum ‘winnable’ Majority likely to back ‘Yes’ side but TransLink support slipping By Jef f Nage l Black Press
New polling data suggests a planned referendum next March on new taxes to expand the Metro Vancouver transit system could yet pass despite waning public support for TransLink. The survey was conducted for TransLink in two phases in May and late June by Maple Leaf Strategies, before and after the release by Metro mayors of their $7.5-billion expansion plan. The first phase found 57 per cent of respondents were very or somewhat likely to vote ‘yes’ in the referendum, followed by 56 per cent in the second phase. About a third said they were unlikely to vote in favour. “That is very encouraging for us,” said Bob Paddon, TransLink’s executive vice-president of strategic planning. “A referendum is winnable.” The survey found 58 per cent were willing to pay higher taxes, fares or fees if the money raised is dedicated to new transportation and transit projects. A larger majority of 75 per cent agreed that “even if taxpayers a k f o r th

don’t like new taxes and fees, they are necessary to build new transit and transportation infrastructure to deal with congestion.” A further 79 per cent agreed public transit investments help ease congestion for vehicle drivers. The surveys of more than 500 residents have a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 per cent. SFU City Program director Gordon Price said he also thinks the referendum may be winnable, but cautioned there are major risks. “Those are more optimistic results than I would have anticipated,” he said of the polling data. A companion survey from Mustel Group indicated declining overall support for TransLink – down to 68 per cent of respondents with a favourable opinion from 75 per cent in 2010 when the Canada Line opened. And the polling was conducted before two major SkyTrain shutdowns fueled intense criticism of TransLink in May, as well as last week’s release of rising payouts to senior executives. Price also noted there’s no final agreement between the mayors and the provincial government on what tax mechanism would be used and no clarity on what it would cost the typical household – answers that voters need as soon as possible. The poll results also suggest the
mayors’ top choice of increasing the carbon tax in Metro to fund their plan over the short time has less support than other options. Fifteen per cent picked the carbon tax as their preferred revenue source. In contrast, 27 per cent listed a $75 vehicle levy, another 27 per cent chose tolls of up to $2 on all bridge crossings in the region and 17 per cent picked a regional sales tax of up to one per cent. According to the Mustel poll, those with good impressions of TransLink most often cited convenient, easy-to-access transit that takes them where they want to go. Those who dislike TransLink had negative opinion of management (29 per cent), dislike TransLink taxes (21 per cent), or called it a waste of money, inefficient or a monopoly (20 per cent). Others said bus service isn’t convenient or accessible enough and needs to be expanded outside Vancouver. Some said transit is too expensive. Those with worsening impressions listed poor route scheduling, poor money management, bad service outside Vancouver, fare increases and poor management. Further down the list were concerns about fare evaders, the new Compass card system, security, taxes and bridge tolls.

He questions whether police and security officers can move people from the downtown area, and even whether they should. Fleugel answered that the RCMP divides the city into zones, and the town centre zone has officers assigned to it, dealing with calls, around the clock. He said it is the zone that generates the most calls, which is expected because it also is the most populous zone. He did not have figures on hand. Fleugel noted that the dedicated foot and bike patrols, in concert with Westridge Security, have been going for about 18 months in the area. “The priorities you set are clearly our priorities,” he said, adding that the perception of safety is important. However, he said police are dealing with “deeply complex social issues,” with homeless people
downtown. Fleugel added that police officers are talking to their communities about homelessness “from coast to coast.” Coun. Al Hogarth also wanted to see more rapid improvements downtown. “We need to step it up,” he said, and added that the provincial and federal governments need to “come to the table with proper resources.” He doesn’t want to see the cost of dealing with homelessness put on the local tax bill, and suggested the Union of B.C. Municipalities and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities start lobbying senior government for resources. “If we’re not careful, we’re going to be the ones to take on the issue,” he said. Masse said that until a solution is found, “coping is extremely important in the meantime.” He said the federal and
provincial governments appear to be almost deliberately avoiding the issue. Morden noted that with the district paying Westridge Security for foot patrols to enhance security downtown, homelessness is already a line item in the Maple Ridge budget. “We’re the default here, and that’s got to end,” he said. The Vibrant Downtown Task Force was launched in 2012, with local business, social services agencies and community members, and it worked for almost a year. Some of the accomplishments of that group included Adopt a Block and Community Builders cleaning the downtown core every two weeks, new lighting downtown – particularly in Memorial Peace Park – a Business Watch campaign to encourage businesses to report crime and identify “hot spots,” and reviewing bylaws that allow cy-

cling on the sidewalk. An Integrated Response Task Group was also formed, researching best practices in other communities. It will present a list of those in the near future, according to Monday’s report. Homelessness is an issue district hall has been dealing with for more than a decade. In 2003, the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Homeless Coalition developed the first Needs Assessment and Homeless Action Plan for the community.
To be vibrant The Vibrant Downtown Task Force recommendations: • That council consider establishing an ongoing, sustainable model to grow the engagement of the business community in vibrant downtown initiatives and in the development of municipal services that respond to needs in the downtown. • That council consider the benefits of utilizing a “placemaking” approach in the downtown. Attractive, interesting, vibrant well-functioning public space can jump-start economic development and strengthen a community’s ability to sustain itself. • That council consider a pilot project that engages the community in arts, culture and creative community building initiatives in the downtown. • That council consider conducting a social impact assessment study to ensure that we have current and relevant information with which to assess current and future service levels.

The first song I performed in a competition was a Carolyn Dawn Johnson song and country has just always worked for me. I love the instrumentation, the intricate musical details, and the fact that the songs so often tell the kind of stories you can take positive messages from.” Even before signing to RGK , Merlo maintained an intensely busy schedule; writing and recording with BC-based producer, Dan Swinimer a minimum of four days a week and gigging several times a month.

THE NEWS/sports Knights shine in home openers Five midget players named to team for Border Bowl showcase game sports@mapleridgenews.com
The Meadow Ridge Knights got three out of four wins in their home opening games on Saturday. The Knight midgets doubled up the Cowichan Bull Dogs on Saturday at Samuel Robertson Technical. Both clubs fought hard in a mid-field trench battle that saw the end of the first half tied 14-14. Ridge came back strong in the second half, putting 14 points on the board to defeat the Bull Dogs 28-14. Four different players scored touchdowns: running back Tyrel Ogloff, wide receiver Liam Evanow, quarterback Sidney Berglund and fullback Phillip Cromwell. Kicker Werner Atkinson nailed all four converts. All five of these players have been announced as 2014 Current Stars B.C. team members for the Alberta/B.C. Border Bowl game, which will be played Dec. 13 in Chilliwack. This is a new bowl game intended to showcase the top graduating high school and community football players in the two provinces. Some 22 scouts have confirmed that they will be taking in the game in person or online. North Delta will host the midgets on Sept. 13. • Atom: The atom Blue Knights kicked it all off on Sunday morning with a convincing 34-0 win over the Chilliwack Giants. Quarterback Quintin Steinmann led the offence to victory, as he hit Devon Crenshaw in the end-zone for a touchdown. Crenshaw found the end-zone on the ground, as well, joining Giant slayers Kesler Johnson, Carter Smith and Calib Gruninger, who also scored touchdowns against Chilliwack. Defensive linemen Ayden Barrett and Levi Spencer-Fell teamed up with with Kody Davey and Viktor Pouznar, making several key tackles that kept Chilliwack out of the end-zone all game long. The Knight will take their 2-0 record on the road to Abbotsford on Saturday.

Defensive backs Carter Bradford and Gavin Mitchell locked down the corners, forcing the Mission team into the heart the Knights’ defence, where they met Lane Viscount and Maxx Hanson, who controlled the line. Riley Rooney and A.J. Steinmann each logged scores on the day, complementing two touchdowns punched in by halfback Isaiah Cavalli. They are in Chilliwack this weekend. (

National association approves Albion FC There are once again two soccer associations serving Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. The new Albion FC soccer association was in limbo, as the Alouette District, which oversees the soccer in the two communities and Mission, took its case against the new club to the Canadian Soccer Association. With the club’s future hanging in the balance, the national body governing amateur soccer denied the appeal, and upheld a decision by B.C. Soccer to allow Albion FC to come into existence. The new club is splintered from the West Coast Auto Group FC, which is one of the largest soccer associations in the province. • For more information about the club and its programs, which are running this fall, see the website Albionfc.ca

On defence, Evan Vasarhely and Blake Alford made numerous tackles . Nathan Redekoop kicked two extra points and also put up an onside kick that was recovered by Brayden Hamilton. The Ridge Meadows Flames beat the Delta Ice Hawks 5-4 on Saturday in their last exhibition game of the regular season. They hosted the North Vancouver Wolf Pack on Friday night at Planet Ice, and lost 5-2. “We wanted a good test on Friday night,” said coach Jamie Fiset, who used the game to evaluate rookies trying out for spots on the team. On Saturday, the roster contained only six returning
players, while the rest were rookies and even minor hockey players who Fiset is looking to affiliate. They youngsters showed him the Flames should have some impressive depth this year. “They gave up the first goal, but then didn’t look back,” he said. The Flames finish exhibition action 2-2, and get ready for some meaningful action. Now they will take on the Langley Knights on Friday night, at 7:30 p.m. at Planet Ice, in their first regular season game of the year. During the off-season, the North Delta Devils became the Langley Knights and switched over to the Harold
rt h A n
Brittain Conference. To make room for the Knights, the Port Moody Panthers have shifted to the Tom Shaw Conference. Each team will play a 44 game unbalanced regular schedule (six games versus each conference rival and four against non-conference) with the top four teams on each side advancing to the playoffs. The Flames have traded the playing rights of Mitch Plevy to the Abbotsford Pilots in exchange for futures. The eighteen-year-old forward played 37 games for the Flames in 2012-13; notching twelve points as a sixteen-year-old rookie. Plevy spent last season in the BCHL with the Chilliwack Chiefs.
Junior hockey veteran recruited for Thunderbirds sports@mapleridgenews.com
After a solid junior career, Justin Georgeson of Maple Ridge has committed to playing the CIS brand of hockey with the UBC Thunderbirds for the upcoming season. Georgeson is a 5’9’’ forward who played three years with the Coquitlam Express and one with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, both BC Hockey League teams. “I am extremely excited to be a part of such a prestigious institution,” said Georgeson. “It’s always been my goal to receive a first-class education while prolonging my hockey career, and I can’t think of a more suitable environment for that.” He played rep hockey with the Burnaby Winter Club and Major Midget in Maple Ridge. He attended Harry Hooge elemen-
tary and MRSS. He will pursue a degree in journalism. Georgeson improved his offensive numbers in each BCHL season, culminating in a 53-point (19 goals and 34 assists) campaign in his only year with Alberni Valley in 2013-14. In 164 regular season games with Coquitlam, he scored 37 goals and 50 assists for 87 points. He added two goals and four assists in 17 postseason career appearances in the BCHL. “We are extremely thrilled to add another local player from the BCHL to our program,” said Kuntz. “He is a determined, intelligent, and skilled centreman who can play up down your line-up and in all situations. He will compete hard and develop into a very good CIS hockey player. Justin will add value to our program both on and off the ice.”
