annual Santa Claus Parade was in jeopardy because the event will no longer be covered by Town of Creston liability insurance.

Creston Valley voters can expect to see some familiar names when they step into the ballot booth on Nov. 15. Creston Mayor Ron Toyota and two of the three local Regional District of Central Kootenay directors have confirmed their intention to seek re-election. Only one town councillor, Judy Gadicke, has stated she will not run in an election that will see local government representatives elected to four-year terms instead of the traditional three. The change is intended to bring local government elections in line with provincial elections and is a cost-saving move. Gadicke, who topped the polls in her two election wins, said her priorities have shifted.

PCSS reunion will remember Tak Toyota

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

When Prince Charles Secondary School classmates of 1964-1966 gather for a reunion this weekend, not all the conversation will revolve around old friends catching up. Tak Toyota, who worked tirelessly for the betterment of his community, will also be remembered. Toyota, father of Creston Mayor Ron Toyota, a 1965 graduate, will be featured in a tribute that includes a display of photos and newspaper clippings. “He meant so much to our community, and especially to young people,” organizer Pat Paterson said last week. An entrepreneur at heart, Toyota married Betty Umakoshi in 1946 and shortly afterward they relocated to Creston, where he operated Creston Electric Ltd., a radio repair shop. It would eventually evolve into Taks Home Furnishers, with locations in Cranbrook, Fernie, Golden and Creston. He also developed a cabled video system for the town. Soon he took an active interest in community development. In 1958 he spearheaded the Kiwanis talent show, and he served as Creston Valley Blossom Festival chair for a number of years starting in 1960. After the old civic centre burned to the ground, Creston faced somewhat of a crisis. Insurance and donations, including land, allowed for the building structure to be completed on the present site, but two borrowing referendums to make the facility useable were defeated. Toyota headed a fundraising group that initiated Operation All-Out to raise $180,000 by asking families to donate at least $200. “$200 is a lot of money and will mean a tremendous sacrifice, but we are asking you to come through this time,” said a letter to residents. “Banks are co-operating as much as possible and arrangements can be

From page 1 In recent years, the chamber of commerce has organized the December parade and Canada Day festivities in return for contributions from the town and RDCK, and a contract with the town qualified those events to be covered by municipal insurance. The contract is no longer in place with the new funding arrangement. New RDCK chief administrative officer Stuart Horn stepped into the discussion, though, and said there was a simple solution. “It’s easy for the events to have cost-free insurance by adding them to the RDCK policy,” he said.

made for loans as low as $10 a month for a $200 pledge.’ “Let’s get behind it, get it built, get it over with and enjoy it and be proud of it,” he wrote. In the 1960s, Toyota established Teen Town, which organized activities for students. He and Betty also led the way in establishing all-night grad parties and running them for several years. Battles of the bands drew teens from all over Creston Valley, where they danced to the music of competing groups. Members of bands recall him as an enthusiastic supporter of teen activities. One such band, the Ambassadors, reunited for a performance seven years ago in Millennium Park, with lead singer Pat (Whitford) Paterson at the microphone. In 1972 Toyota was honored as Creston’s citizen of the year, an award, not surprisingly, that

he had initiated as a Kiwanis Club project in 1958. “The man who started the annual Kiwanis talent show here 14 years ago received his award as Creston’s citizen of the year at this year’s talent revue,” said a story in the Nelson Daily News. “Tak Toyota received a plaque from Kiwanis president Roy Pridham and a bouquet was given to Mrs. Toyota at the Prince Charles Secondary School. “Mr. Toyota, a businessman who has expanded his business to stores in Cranbrook, Golden and Fernie, has been an active community worker. “He served on town council for six years, was president of the board of trade and for many years was chairman of the annual Blossom Festival.” Toyota died following a brief illness on Feb. 18, 1973.

A disagreement on the rental fee for Creston and District Community Complex facilities at this year’s Creston Valley Home and Garden Show was also resolved. Facility manager Randy Fediuk reported that the possibility of a Creston Valley Thunder Cats’ playoff game forced the home and garden event to be moved into the curling rink. The move resulted in a drop of revenues (only 67 booths could be accommodated, down from the previous year’s 97) for the chamber of commerce, which was left with a shortfall after paying expenses. RDCK directors voted to offset the shortfall of about $2,200 by reducing the rental fee by that amount for the next home and garden show.

•Also from the Creston Valley Services Committee meeting: Consultant Wendall Marshall reported that the retrofit of Rotacrest Hall is on budget, with most of the work on the upper floor now complete. Renovations have been undertaken to upgrade the facility, allowing the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors to be accommodated on the lower level. Changes include construction of a kitchen where a manager’s apartment once was located. The upper floor will become home to the New Horizons seniors group. Both floors will also be available for rental when they are available. Total cost of the extensive retrofit is budgeted at $336,000.

Pot trade connected to gangs, town life not a draw BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

The Creston marijuana trade has connections to organized gangs but there don’t seem to be any gangsters residing in the area, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. “Our intelligence information indicates that a large portion of the marijuana sales activity is backed by a criminal organization and provincial intelligence says majority is run by Hell’s Angels,” he said. “We haven’t identified any local members. Most of the other drugs come in through Alberta and they don’t seem to be specifically associated with one gang.” “The small size of the Creston Valley works in our favour,” he added. “We have no night life or fast living, and those are appeals to people who get involved in organized crime. We did have a couple of Independent Soldiers come in from Prince George last year, but they were quickly identified by members of the community. We were able to lay some charges for several offences and they left town.” Gollan said most of Creston’s criminal drug scene members act independently.

Calls for RCMP drop as fall nears BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston RCMP responded to only 52 calls from Sept. 1-7, a likely sign that fall has arrived, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. September 1 •A 60-inch flat screen television was stolen in a break and entry to a Devon Street residence. •A motorcyclist was not injured when he crashed his bike on Highway 3A near Crawford Bay. •A male from Highway 3A was taken to the hospital for evaluation after calling in with a medical concern. •Police assisted a family in locating a runaway male child and returning him home to Riverview Road. September 2 •A report of possible illegal hunting near Canyon-Lister Road was referred to conservation officers. •A handheld radio with the name Okanagan Aggregates was lost on Canyon Street. •The owner of a wallet found by a construction worker near Highway 21 reported that he lost the wallet seven years ago. •A 12th Avenue North resident turned a rifle in for police to destroy. •A driver of a vehicle pulling a trailer was reported to be driving erratically on Dogwood Street. When he was located, he had not been consuming alcohol and showed no signs of impairment. September 3 •An intoxicated male behaving aggressively on Northwest Boulevard was gone when police arrived on the scene. •A bylaw ticket was issued to an Eighth Avenue South resident for playing loud music. He is the source of ongoing complaints from neighbours. •A female tenant on Highway 3 was warned for disturbing the peace. September 4 •When Kingsgate border personnel reported a tractor-trailer unit reported stolen in Ontario was entering Canada, an investigation revealed that a male had leased the semi and hired another man to drive it. The lessee did not make any payments, so the semi was considered stolen. •Police were called to Canyon Street to keep the peace at a residence. •A theft of road construction signs was reported on Erickson Road. •A female was reported to have backed into another vehicle

in a Northwest Boulevard parking lot, got out to examine the damage, then returned to her car and driven off. The investigation continues. •No injuries were reported after a motorcycle crashed when the driver took a Highway 3 corner too fast. •Police assisted provincial ministry personnel with an investigation. •When the female owner of dogs on Wright Road was approached about letting her dogs run loose, she informed police that she had moved to the country so she could let them run free. She was informed as to the obligations of a pet owner. September 5 •A male was taken to hospital from Sixth Avenue North. •When police checked on dogs reported to be barking on Haskins Road they determined the animals were not in distress. •Keys were stolen from a vehicle parked on Canyon Street. •A quantity of copper wire was stolen from a Payne Street site. •When police responded to a report of a female hitchhiker in distress, they located her and she was taken to hospital by ambulance. At the hospital she was determined to be too intoxicated to treat, so she was first taken to police cells and then transported to the psychiatric ward in Cranbrook. •Police were asked to assist ambulance personnel with an elderly patient. •A dog was reported to be sitting on Highway 21. •An intoxicated male reported to be stumbling into traffic on Northwest Boulevard was not located. September 6 •Three motorcycles reported to be passing dangerously on Highway 3A were not located. •Police referred a complaint about a bonfire near Canyon-Lister Road to the regional fire department. •A group of intoxicated males reported to be knocking on a residence door on Eighth Street South were not located. •Police stopped a vehicle driving with hazard lights flashing on 12th Street, only to find it being driven by a 14-year-old. Election From page 1 “Besides my two teaching jobs, I have a grandchild now that I want to spend time with when I can,” she said. “I have also discovered the art of lampworking, working with glass, and I love being in my studio. “I totally support Ron Toyota as mayor. He is a gentleman, a wonderful ambassador for our community, thoughtful, well spoken, intelligent and is always working to better our community.” “I have truly enjoyed my two terms as mayor of Creston and I believe I still have a lot to offer,” said Toyota. “We have accomplished a lot, not only as a council, but by working in concert with regional directors to make the Creston Valley an even better place to live.” Veteran councillor Joanna Wilson will be making a run for a fourth term after serving previously on the School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) board. “Having served three consecutive terms, I feel there is work to do and contributions still to make,” she said. “I would continue my support of the arts, cultural events, affordable housing, downtown enhancement, environmental issues, quality of life and lifestyles for all of us.” Another veteran, Wesly Graham, has announced that he will be running for a position on Cranbrook’s city council. He has relocated to Cranbrook after taking a job in MP David Wilks’ office. “I have no comment at this time. The official announcement date is some time away,” Scott Veitch replied when asked about his intentions. He was elected to his first term on council in 2011. Another veteran, Jerry Schmalz, did

That is a tough question,” she admitted. “I don’t know what the public perception would be.” After a dozen years representing Area B, the last several as RDCK chair,

John Kettle still isn’t 100 per cent certain he is stepping aside. “For the past twelve years I have on the occasion of each election voiced my thoughts about not running,” he said. “I have done this four times and four times I have been a successful candidate for office. I am now 67 years old, rounder than Jabba the Hut and have trouble driving at night, especially over the Salmo-Creston summit. “In consultation with my wife, family, grandkids (nine) and my doctor, I have been advised I may want to think about smelling the roses before I begin pushing up daisies. That being said, Oct. 10, 2014 is the last day I can file for this election. So, in all honesty, I am working on my political ‘bucket list’ and hope to have it completed before that date so I won’t be tempted to file again. We’ll see you on the 11th of October for the answer.” Two-term Area C director Larry Binks has confirmed his intention to run again on Nov. 15. “I enjoy what I am doing and I have projects on the go that I would like to see to fruition,” he said. Among those projects, he said, are creating a sustainable Creston Valley Wildlife Interpretation Centre plan, completing the Nicks Island water system and helping the community trails group establish trails in Area C. “I have great support from my constituents and I enjoy the interaction, especially with the agricultural community.” Area A director Garry Jackman also wants to stay on the job for another four years. “I am still enjoying the work and I believe I have been able to assist in many successes,” he said.

Last week my heart melted when had been a school teacher, and I received a photo on my iPhone of would soon after become the commy five-year-old granddaughter munity’s kindergarten teacher, but standing outside of school. Her first she was not an advocate of teaching day of kindergarten and she looked kids to read before they went to so grown up, not to mention tired after a night of sleepless excitement. Then, a couple of days later, I stopped to chat with a group of picketing teachers, and the sadness set in. Not just for teachers, who want to be back at work, or kids, who want to be in Lorne Eckersley school, or parents, many of whom are scrambling to find school, believing it would only lead adequate care for their children, but to boredom for the child who was for those first-day memories, which ahead of others. We had lots of will eventually be made, but with a books and were read to a lot, bittersweetness because they didn’t though, so reading and writing happen as anticipated. would come quickly and easily. I can When I was a kid in Calgary kindergartens weren’t part of the public still remember the frustrations brought on by the endless repetitiveschool system. They were organized ness of our first grade primer. How But starting into school was about exciting and exotic to be singing in much more than classroom learning another language. Somehow, O (from our positions in 28 or so oneTannenbaum just sounds better. piece wood desks with inkwell holes The first day of school is the real and a big book drawer, all facing the deal, though. As I looked at that teacher and never to be moved out photo of Quinn I couldn’t help but of their rows). There was the thrill of think back to my first day at Terrace meeting new kids who had either Road Elementary School. We lived moved into the neighbourhood over less than two blocks away, so there the summer or who lived far enough were no buses involved. But I remember clearly the sense the way we were able to organize our activities. Before school, during of letdown I felt when we were put lunch hour, after school and at to work folding paper airplanes on recess, there were always games that first day. Not that making airplanes wasn’t fun, but I was there to going on, few or none organized by learn to read and write and I wanted teachers or other adults. The soccer to get on with it. were signed out or marbles pulled from our pockets and we just got to it. For our scrub softball games the first three kids to touch home base were batters, and the next three would pitch, catch and play first base. When you made an out, you went to the outfield, then gradually worked your way back as subsequent batters were put out. Marbles were a nearmiraculous experience. The first day of marble season (always in spring) just seemed to happen. One day no one was playing marbles and on the next the field was full of players. Marble-rich kids, who had boulders or steelies, dug little holes in the ground, set a treasure in front and started calling out, “Hit it in the pot, you get it!” Soon lineups would form of players who wanted their turn. Of course the kid with the treasure kept the marbles from unsuccessful shots. It’s that schoolyard play that makes me wary of home schooling. We learned so many valuable skills when a couple hundred of us gathered on those fields and the tarmac in front of the doors. Girls brought their skipping ropes or chalk to draw games on the pavement, boys argued about who was on which team, small groups stood and repeated jokes from the previous night’s Red Skelton Show or relived the Maple Leafs win over the Canadiens. Adults, just like in the Charlie Brown comic strip, were rarely to be seen, and almost never to organize. I get the same thrill when I drive past Adam Robertson Elementary School when school is in. That hive of activity is a healthy thing. Let’s hope we see its return soon. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

All should join election process To the Editor: Bonjour, ladies and gentlemen of Creston. I wish to share with you my political and personal philosophy regarding a few topics that should prove to be most informative. I consider myself to be a “workingclass conservative” who is also well educated, and I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, especially when it comes to astronomy, history, science, physics, geology, economics, world events, religion and, of course, politics. I am also very sentimental, compassionate, spiritual and possess a warm heart. For me personally, I draw inspiration from my two favourite world leaders of the 1980s, Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. Their brand of conservatism still shapes and influences today’s world for the better. With our federal election coming up next year, it is important that everyone becomes involved in the political process — in particular, more women, First Nations and young people, because they will become the future decision makers of Canada. I must admit, though, the Liberals, New Democrats and Greens do have some interesting ideas on how to govern this lovely country of ours, and perhaps someday we could all work together in harmony for the

greater good of every man, woman and child. In conclusion, it is important in the post-9-11 world to maintain a positive attitude, be optimistic, and have faith and hope. However, it is also imperative that we remain constantly vigilant against any extremist ideology that attempts to undermine Canadian values or brainwash people’s minds. In the long run, the terrorists, with their fanatical beliefs, which have absolutely nothing to do with Islam, will lose big time! Allan Clement Creston

‘One world government’ a big task To the Editor: (Open letter to Creston Jehovah’s Witnesses) After one letter plus a phone call to your Kingdom Hall requesting that you cease sending mail and invitations to my mailbox, both in vain, I decided to respond to your last invite, mainly to listen to a speaker talk of “one world government” and how it could happen at this public event. This would be quite an undertaking. Didn’t some guy try this about 2,000 years ago and the Romans didn’t like his politics so they nailed him up to a tree and left him there? Does someone want to take a shot at this again? I would suggest that the world par-

liament building be situated at the North Pole so that the leader can be on top of things. I really think you people should be careful with this one government thing, because if Prime Minister Harper gets wind of it, he’s liable to start charging you people property tax on your land and building. Gleaners welcomes volunteers To the Editor: As fall approaches, we Creston Valley Gleaners Society volunteers find ourselves victims of our own success. The snowbirds will soon be heading south and predictably in the retirement age group, in which many of us fall, there are those who must leave for health reasons. We simply do not have enough new volunteers for what we consider a most worthy endeavour. Ask any of the store’s staff, and they all say the same thing: how much they enjoy the work, it’s challenges and the camaraderie that benefits all of us. Many have volunteered here for five to 10 years or more. Please consider donating at least four hours per week. Come and see what we do behind the scenes and what community projects we support. It really is amazing. Jean Partington Riverview

Do not slander others

This precept is about cultivating and encouraging respectful speech. It’s about refraining from gossip that alienates us from ourselves and from others. At the level of national and provincial politics, it’s about not depending on attack ads to garner votes. Slander often causes pain for others and divisiveness in the community. This precept provides a clear path to understanding the roots of harmful speech. The sixth precept encourages us to be non-judgmental. This does not mean that we blind ourselves to the harmful behaviors that we see in others. We have a positive obligation to point out harmful behavior. Constructive open-minded criticism based in a true desire to reduce harm can be healthy. However, criticism that attacks others and is narrow-minded is based in selfishness, vanity and arrogance. This is a challenging precept because we value the communion we share with others through talk about family and friends. So, on the one hand, we have the pleasure of communicating with others, and on the other, the destructive power of words when we talk about the faults of people we know and love. We might ratio-

nalize that it is important to share information about another ’s faults. And sometimes this is true. But we must be very careful here, and behave with deliberation and deep consider-

ation. For example, we might tell ourselves that we are acting to protect our friends if we have discovered that someone has lied or acted in some other harmful way. But still, to pass this information along indiscriminately damages all concerned. Our words could reduce that person’s potential for rehabilitation into community. And really, aren’t we just demonstrating our own willingness to harm? Not criticizing others is a house rule at the Creston zendo because it maintains social harmony at our place of practice. This harmony strengthens our spiritual training. We avoid idle chatter and gossip because it has little

value and its aim is often to spread rumors. We interpret this precept as advice to refrain from saying anything about anyone who is not present. Even if we we are not saying “critical” things about someone, our comments often point out the shortcomings of another or question the value of something they have done. We have found that we do the least harm it is best to notice our opinions about others, and let them go. Before we speak, we should first question the benefits of our intended words. Conversation should not come at the personal expense of another. A loving community is a community that is based in trust. It holds each member to be precious and sacred. Careless talk violates and diminishes this sacredness. Suggested practice: For the next two weeks, when you find a person's name coming out of your mouth, pause and ask yourself, “Is it truly necessary to say what I was going to say?” Be mindful of this precept by bringing awareness to each conversation where you are about to speak of the faults of another. tion rights, or simply because it is what’s expected. There is an underlying idea of “goodness” or “doing it right”. I, personally, don’t like the idea of being bound to another person by the law with an ancient religious tradition. But it’s all about preference. If you want to say some vows and make a huge legal and personal commitment, that’s fine. You do you. If you want to marry to get the recognition/validation of your religion, also fine. But my point is: Marriage is steadily becoming more about fulfilling social expectations, and less about love and commitment. Okay, so maybe you argue that marriage is about love and commitment, that its entire purpose is to join people who are so devoted to each other that they are willing to make this kind of legal agreement. Why, then, do people care so much who is getting married? If marriage is about love, why do people give a flying frack if the couple is same-sex, or if there are more than two people getting married? Does it hurt their feelings? Like I said, marriage is (or should be) all about personal preference. I personally see marriage as unnecessary and only about fulfilling social duties. I also am not religious, and don’t need to marry for land or livelihood. So why am I concerned about marriage equality? Because if marriage is all it’s cracked up to be, it shouldn’t exclude certain kinds of people and ways of life. Closedmindedness to different kinds of marriage, such as polygyny, polyandry and same-sex marriage, shows how marriage has evolved to be more about traditions and what others think than about love and commitment. In the beginning, marriage was about practicalities, control and religion. Although monogamy is the most common today, same-sex marriage and polygamy have been around just as long. The increasing number of divorces shows that marriage is just not working, and is obviously built on a shallow foundation. What is this foundation? The sole intent is to please others. Marriage has become superficial, and people have therefore been more closedminded to marriage equality. Marriage has become simply about fitting the mould, the white dress and the romantic aesthetic of purity and “love”. LoRae Blackmore is entering Grade 12 at Prince Charles Secondary School. Five performances in concert society season Summer is almost ended and harvest is coming, and with it the Creston Valley Fall Fair. Following tradition, the Creston Concert Society will be awaiting your visit to its booth, where you will discover the wonderful new line up for its 2014-2015 season, which includes a variety of styles and genres for your listening and viewing pleasure. The season opens on a classical note with Duo Concertante on Oct. 1. Duo Concertante is a duo ensemble formed by husband-and-wife musicians Nancy Dahn on violin and Timothy Steeves on piano. In addition to performing well known classical works by Beethoven, Bach and Mozart, Dahn and Steeves have a significant interest in contempoSubmitted rary music, including Bartok, Gershwin Quintessence (above), Jayme Stone’s lomax Project (below) and Three Worlds (bot- and Arvo Part, as well as modern works tom) will perform as part of the Creston Concert Society’s 2014-15 season. by Canada’s leading composers such as R. Murray Schafer, and deliver consistently energetic and fiery performances. On Nov. 15, Three Worlds will be colliding in Creston. Hailing from Vancouver Island, this award-winning roots music supergroup is comprised of award-winning guitarist Brad Prevadoros (previously in the band Firedance, which the concert society was proud to present), acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Greg Joy (flute, guitar and hammered dulcimer) and percussion master Niel Golden (Indian hand drums and the new and elusive Hang). Their groundbreaking sound features their own interpretive blend of eastern, Latin jazz, blues, African, pan-Asian and Celtic folk influences producing the essence of music without borders. When winter is often at it’s harshest, Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project will help chase the blues away. Two-time Junowinning banjoist, composer, vocalist and instigator Jayme Stone makes music inspired by sounds from around the world, bridging folk, jazz and chamber music. His award-winning albums both defy and honour the banjo’s long role in the world’s music, turning historical connections into compelling music. On Feb. 23, Stone and accompanying musicians celebrate the work of famed folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax, and bring together some of North America’s most distinctive and creative roots musicians to revive, recycle and re-imagine traditional music, including Bahamian sea shanties, African-American a cappella songs, Old World weavers’ work songs, ancient Appalachian ballads and new songs inspired by the sounds, stories and melodies collected by Lomax. Celebrate the arrival of spring with a Sunday matinee. On March 22, internationally renowned vocalists Robyn Driedger-Klassen, Barb Towell, Frederik Rober and Peter Alexander, accompanied by sensational pianist Tina Chang, perform as QuintEssence. This celebrated group of performers offers a fresh, innovative concert experience for lovers of classical music of any style. Their

performances showcase cherished opera repertoire of phenomenal quality and exotic musical gems by celebrated songwriters spanning from Schubert to Poulenc, Britten to Heggie, Gershwin to Weill. QuintEssence will dazzle you with vocal pyrotechnics, melt your heart with beautifully sung poetry and stretch your musical frontier to the limit with adored music from off the beaten track. Preventing gang activity in BC ▾ MYTH: Once kids join a gang there’s no hope for them: Reality: With quick family, school, and police intervention, a youth can leave the gang without any serious consequences. The key is a coordinated and collaborative intervention as soon as some of the warning signs appear. Better yet, everyone needs to work together to prevent youth and young adults from joining gangs.

Service is key to flooring retailer’s 30 years in Creston BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

In 1984, Drapes to Floor You opened downtown as Creston’s one-stop shop for floor and window coverings. Three decades later, the same owners are still at it, operating out of a vastly larger shop and warehouse. But despite location changes, a new name, Nufloors, and an endless parade of new and improved merchandise, some things haven’t changed — “Smart service, great product” is how Ellen Samuelson puts it. She and her husband, Randy, own the business at 1518 Northwest Blvd., offering hardwood and laminate flooring, tile, carpet and blinds. And at 10,000 square feet, the store is a far cry from the 500 square feet it took up on Canyon Street, in the space now home to Summit Outdoor Sport. “He ran it out of the back, and used the parking lot as a cutting floor sometimes,” said Samuelson. Up front, she had Summit Music for about eight years, offering the latest in cassettes, CDs, ghetto blasters and Walkmans. Eventually, Drapes to Floor You moved to the front of the building, before they packed up and moved to a larger location on the west side of Northwest Boulevard around 1990. They stayed there for a few years before a flood sent them packing again — fortunately, the current location was already in the works. “We were in the process of buying this land and building this building,” said Samuelson. On that 15 acres, the building started out at 7,500 square

feet when the showroom and warehouse opened about 20 years ago — guests at the grand opening signed a ceiling tile that hangs in the office — and was eventually expanded to 10,000 square feet.

“Truly, the core of this business is repeat customers.” ellen Samuelson Nufloors co-owner

Locations haven’t been the only changes for the business. In 2000, Drapes to Floor You joined United Carpet, which offered group buying power. The association lasted for just a few years, though — a number of Western Canada retailers weren’t happy with the eastern influence, and banded together about 10 years ago to create a new buying group, Nufloors, which now has 24 member stores. While the store has always offered the same basic products it did in 1984, a few things are different. Drapes are no longer sold there, having been replaced by blinds and shades, and laminate flooring is slowly losing favour to luxury vinyl tile. Wicker, too, is no longer part of the store’s inventory. “That was kind of the in thing in the ’80s,” Samuelson said. Many customers are now starting to develop outdoor living spaces, and Nufloors deals with all aspects, including Duradek, retractable awnings, and wooden and glass railings,

even in some precarious locations, such as one East Shore home Samuelson visited this summer. “It was 100 feet of rail going down and down and down,” she said. Retractable Phantom Screens products are also proving popular with anyone wanting to keep fresh air flowing through their home. “They’re starting to come out as meshes that block heat, as well,” Samuelson said, noting that Nufloors has one that rolls down over the warehouse doorway. “You get fresh air — but it stops bugs and birds.” As longtime residents — Ellen moved to Creston at age five, and Randy’s grandfather, Arvid, was a Creston Valley pioneer — the owners are proud to contribute to employment and the local economy, with about 10 people, both employees and subcontractors, on the payroll. To ensure that customers make that possible, Nufloors offers competitive pricing, which brings customers back time and time again. “Truly, the core of this business is repeat customers,” Samuelson said. Beyond the prices, they return because of the service, a key reason the business has been successful for 30 years. “We try to make it all so easy,” Samuelson said. “That’s what we try to achieve.” Nufloors will be celebrating its 30th anniversary from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sept. 12 and 13, offering coffee and cake by Crazy Cakes by Tracy on Friday, and a barbecue by Famous Fritz Meats and Deli and Rick’s Iron Kettle, and music by Mike Stenhouse on Saturday.

Author speaking tonight about book following Kootenay soldiers BY GREG NESTEROFF Nelson Star

Submitted

Nelson author Sylvia Crooks.

At the same time, Rev. John Althoff was disturbed at “the intoxication of praise and the glory of war” and warned of its “soberness and gravity.” Even those who listened to Althoff’s admonitions wouldn’t have anticipated the horrors to come over the next four years. Many who departed that day didn’t return. In her new book, Names on a Cenotaph: Kootenay Lake Men in World War I, Sylvia Crooks (pictured at left) takes a closer look at

A century ago, thousands of people converged on Nelson to send 175 volunteers — the first Kootenay contingent — off to war. Three-quarters were going to fight for their homelands. But others said they enlisted for “glory and satisfaction” and one man admitted his motives weren’t purely patriotic: “Part of it was the love of adventure, and a desire to see the world.”

the local men who died on European battlefields in what was supposed to be the war to end all wars. Crooks is offering a reading and presentation at the Boswell Memorial Hall tonight (Sept. 11) at 7 p.m. She previously wrote Homefront and Battlefront: Nelson BC in World War II and during her research on that book was intrigued by the fact that even though similar numbers enlisted locally in both wars — about 1,300 — nearly four times as many men from the earlier conflict appear on the Nelson cenotaph.

“That was pretty overpowering,” Crooks said, attributing the difference partly to strategy. “They were using Victorian military strategy with more modern weapons. These men were walking into wave after wave of machine gun fire.” It wasn’t unusual for 1,000 or more to die in a single battle, many from blood poisoning.

Sedition and the First World War In Names on a Cenotaph: Kootenay Lake Men in World War I, author Sylvia Crooks doesn’t shy away from troubling aspects of the war that occurred off the battlefield. It’s hard to imagine today, but back then, expressing the least bit of doubt or indifference was regarded as unpatriotic and could have serious consequences. Citizens were encouraged to join a “Loyalty League” and report any dissent. Crooks cites three examples from 1918 alone: A man who was rude to a Red Cross canvasser in Nelson was immediately arrested. Another man alleged to have said “It doesn’t matter whether Britain or Germany wins this war” was similarly jailed. And the secretary of the Miners’ Union at Silverton was charged with sedition for stating soldiers in France were not fighting his battles. —Greg Nesteroff

World war

From page 16 Another stark statistic: One-third of the names on the Nelson cenotaph have no known resting place. As the battleground was repeatedly churned up, makeshift graves were blown apart. Crooks, a Nelson native and retired University of BC library science instructor, began collecting biographical information on each soldier and placed it in binders at the Touchstones Nelson archives. It came to more than 400 pages. “I had all this info and decided I’d like to do something to bring some of these men alive again and tell their stories,” she says. Her starting point was the 280 names on the Nelson cenotaph — who also hailed from the Slocan Valley, Trail, the Boundary and other points — as well as memorials at Procter, Kaslo and Boswell. Those names are notoriously difficult to research, however. As Crooks notes in her book, when cenotaphs were erected, there was “no overseeing body, no official lists of the dead for each city and town, no standards set or guidelines provided. Names were assembled from townspeople who wanted their loved ones or friends remembered.” Consequently, there are many errors: misspelled names, incorrect initials, omissions and even the inclusion of men who survived the war. Crooks’ job was made easier, however, by the fact enlistment papers for the Canadian Expeditionary Forces have been digitized and are available online. She also corresponded with many soldiers’ family members, although in most cases they were a couple of generations removed. Crooks herself had an uncle who served overseas in the 54th Kootenay Battalion and survived, while her family had a Bealby Point cottage next to the McVicar sisters, whose two brothers were both killed.

Regional News

“It’s 100 years ago I’m writing about and yet here’s a family I had such personal contact with,” she said. In contrast to her previous book, which devoted equal space to the war effort at home and abroad, Crooks spends more time discussing individual soldiers. “The men didn’t all grow up together in the way they did in World War II,” she explains. “Most were immigrants and

www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca 17

arrived as young boys or teenagers in the first part of the century. It wasn’t as closely knit a community as it was later.” Every First World War soldier named on the Nelson cenotaph is listed in the book, and a little over half receive more detailed biographies. Crooks says she tried to include a representative sample and those with especially interesting stories.

She admits, however, that writing at length about young men cut down in their prime was “depressing.” “These were almost like people I knew by the time I started writing,” she said. “It was difficult sometimes because the stories were so terribly sad. It’s a sad book, but important to remember these people — not just to pay tribute to the names but to the men themselves.”

New coach leading T-Cats for 2014-15 season BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats will start the 2014-15 season on Saturday, and head coach Jeff Dubois is confident the season will be another successful one. “We’ve got a strong returning group with a lot of drive, and guys who have an opportunity to have a larger role this year,” he said. At press time, no final decisions had been made with the team still to play two of six exhibition games (results included two wins and two losses), but Dubois was expecting nearly a dozen to return from last year. Their experience will help fill the gap left by the five 20-year-olds — Jesse Collins, Trevor Hanna, Brandon Formosa, Andrew Hodder and Jonathon Watt — who aged out, those five being among the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s top scorers and defencemen. But a number of potential new players were discovered at

a camp last month in Calgary, over a half-dozen of which are still playing, and a few excellent locals have been playing since last month’s main camp in Creston. “Overall, the main camp was my first realization, ‘Hey, we’re gonna be a good competitive team,’ ” said Dubois. That should make the Sept. 13 season-opener a wellmatched battle against the Kimberley Dynamiters. “I think it will be two strong teams,” he said. Taking over for former coach Josh Hepditch marks the second time Dubois has been a head coach, having coached Castlegar’s Selkirk College Saints, in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL), leading them to two consecutive league victories in 2013 and 2014. Dubois had played hockey since he was a kid, and spent time as part of the Burnaby Winter Club, in which he tried out against players at higher levels. Knowing the NHL wouldn’t be an option for him, Dubois went on to study politi-

cal science at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and, later, journalism at Langara College. While at SFU, Dubois spent two years playing hockey for the university, which hadn’t had a team since the 1970s. “I was able to play there without having an impressive junior hockey background,” he said. Dubois also took on some coaching responsibilities, being part of the leadership that ushered the team to the league championships from 2008-12, three of those resulting in winning the BCIHL title. While studying at Langara, he was still recruiting for, coaching and general managing the SFU Clan, as well as handling communications for the league. Through that, he came in contact with Selkirk College, which was in the BCIHL and looking for a new head coach after being at the bottom of the league for five straight seasons. “They kind of took a chance on me because I hadn’t been a head coach on any level,” he said. For Dubois, it was a test to see if it could become a career, and

lead him to more opportunities at the junior level. It paid off, as he led the Saint to records of 21-3-0 in 2012-13 and 20-3-1 in 2013-14, as well as unbeaten playoff runs. The team finished the 2013-14 season with a 29-game home winning streak. Speaking of winning streaks, the first Thunder Cats game Dubois saw was during the team’s 13-game streak in January and February, so he’s well aware that Hepditch set the bar high for the team that earned the division title for the first time this year. “There (Castlegar), the idea was to turn it around,” he said. “Here, the idea is to hopefully keep doing as well as we’ve done the last year.” The Creston Valley Thunder Cats play Sept. 13 in Kimberley and Sept. 18 in Golden, before returning to Creston Sept. 19 for their home opener hosting the Golden Rockets.

It’s all about the green at VP Nursery

F

or at least one Creston Valley business, the potash, uranium, oil and gas industries on the Prairies have created a huge demand for product — with new subdivisions springing up around many Story and Prairie cities, trees are photo by a hot commodity. Brian “They’re growing Lawrence like crazy,” said VP Nursery owner Andrew Stolz. “It’s a huge opportunity for Creston, which doesn’t have any of that, to tap into it.” And with about 50 different kinds of trees grown on Stolz’s farms, one by Duck Lake and one on the flats, he has something to suit every need: Cities want trees to create a leafy canopy over boulevards and homeowners want a privacy barrier that doesn’t take up too much space. “Even though there’s a broad expanse of prairie, people have small yards,” said Stolz. “They want trees that are columnar or dwarfing.” Among the tree he grows are linden, ash, elm and apple, many of them Prairie-hardy varieties that thrive in Creston’s warmer climate — some, such as the flowering cherry, can grow nine feet in a year after they take root. It took some trial and error in the early days to figure that out, though. In the case of the flowering cherry, Stolz picked fruit from the trees and grew seedlings, which didn’t work well, with each seedling growing into its own unique, and unsellable, shape; what is typically seen as a large tree is naturally a shrub. He wound up throwing out about 80 per cent of what he grew, but discovered that rooting softwood cuttings would produce trees identical to the parent. “Genetic-wise, I know each of them will have a nice form,” Stolz said. Of course, he also uses the tried and true technique of grafting, and he’s currently experimenting with an apple tree that has five kinds on it.

“I’ve always had a real fascination with nature,” he said. “It’s a business, but it’s environmental, and it’s such a good thing.” The passion Stolz has for his profession is something he comes by honestly. His father, a geophysicist with a hobby farm, grew trees in the basement when Stolz was young. “He always fancied a tree farm,” Stolz said. When he was 17, they bought 10 acres in Wynndel, land that was mostly dedicated to growing spruce. He wasn’t too serious about the business for the first several years, but moved to Creston 18 years ago to work at the farm full-time. “I slowly learned how to do it and slowly converted into deciduous trees,” said Stolz. Beyond growing trees, the learning curve also involved operating a tree spade, loader and excavator. “I was a city kid — I didn’t know how to drive an excavator,” he said. But he figured it out, and that 10 acres eventually expanded to 30, now used mainly for propagation, and he later bought 100 acres on the flat, an area he uses mainly for growing bigger trees to a salable size. While most customers only focus on a short growing season, any grower is quick to point out it’s pretty much a year-round job — pruning in the winter, and March through August is time for propagation. A lot of propagation: Stolz estimates about 20,000 trees have been started this year. Once they’re sold, the trees wind up all over Canada and the U.S. “There are trees from Creston growing in Ottawa, New Mexico and Alaska, and lots in between, too,” he said. And that offers an added bonus when Stolz visits his hometown in Saskatchewan. “It’s so cool to go into new subdivisions in Regina and see my trees,” he said. “It’s like I know them all as VP Nursery owner Andrew Stolz (right) and employee Trevor Marzke on the Wynndel tree farm. individuals.”

Vickie was born to parents Kate and John Placsko in St. Brieux, Saskatchewan on April 14, 1913. She earned her Grade 11 Diploma there.

She married the love of her life, Jack Pretty, in Melfort, SK on October 22, 1940. In her younger years, Vickie worked in a local bakery in Creston. She was actively involved in her church, teaching Sunday School for 28 years and very much a part of the Prayer Ministry. She was also part of Women’s Aglow Chapter in Creston. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her sons Dale and Dennis (Cathy); grandsons David (Jan), Kevin, Ken (Lisa); and great-grandchildren Taylor, Jack, Katie, Olivia and Grace.

Her contagious laugh, fun loving personality and the love she had for her Savior Jesus are all values we have gleaned from her life. Four art shows on display at library, chamber COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL OF CRESTON

It is hard to believe that summer is over — where did it go? Well, it is time to get back to regular living and checking out the new art displays at the Creston Valley Public Library and the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce should be part of your regular schedule. Art in the Library offers a wonderful display called “Vibrant Variety” (try to say that three times in a row) and features five Crestonarea artists. Come and see the wonderfully colourful acrylics of Richard Mitton, the always exciting mixed media paintings of Shelly Lamb, the intricate detail work of Grace Tyler, the peaceful landscapes by

Kurtis Lander and the charming paintings of pups and flowers by Emmie Bennis. You can see this vibrant display during library hours until Nov. 1. The Art in the Chamber display is something a little different this time: Visitors will be treated to three separate exhibits. “Art in Glass Cabinets” features artists whose work is smaller than average, art perfect for small gifts or treats. The fascinating encaustic art of Caroleen Lucas is full of colour and mystery, with something new to be seen every time you look. The charming beach art jewelry of Margaret Swetlishoff offers an unusual reminder of those sunny days at the beach. This part of the display ends on Oct. 30. See ARTWORK, page 27

Harvest Moon by richard Mitton is part of the current art in the library display.

From page 26 The second exhibit at the chamber is “Core Matters: Farm and Food”. This is a special display by nine area artists who are using art to show the importance of farming in Creston. The exhibiting artists are Andy and Elaine Alfoldy, Eileen Gidman, Karen Arrowsmith, Ute Bachinski, Eileen Hirota, Sandy Kunze, James McDowell and Carol Schloss. “We believe the breadth of approaches to the theme ‘Core Matters: Farm and Food’ employed by each artist from realism to semi-abstraction will be of interest to viewers, as well as aesthetically pleasing,” said the artists about the display. The “Core Matters” exhibit ends on Oct. 3. Come down and see how these artists interpret the importance of farming in our valley.

CRESTON VALLEY ADVANCE

The third part of Art in the Chamber will be a display by three well known “Creston Favourites”, Andy and Elaine Alfoldy, and Ute Bachinski. Come and see what they do when they are not painting about food! The wonderful colour, humour and detail these artists use in their art are always pleasing to the viewer. The “Creston Favourites” display will end on Oct. 30. Creston residents and visitors to the area should take some time to check out both of these venues to see just a portion of the wonderful art available in the area. Remember: Most of the art is for sale, so think about starting your Christmas shopping early. These community art displays are sponsored by the Community Arts Council of Creston, the Creston Valley Public Library and the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce.
