Even if students were back in school today, it’s unlikely everyone could get themselves organized by that date. But Fox says that date is more of a suggestion or guideline than anything set in stone. “Everyone I’ve spoken to has committed to holding an event whenever they can,” she explained. “If that’s not September, then we’re completely happy to support them in October or November or any other time.” Even April is a viable option, and very symbolic. On April 12, 1980 Terry Fox started the Marathon of Hope in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Ruth & Naomi’s Mission executive director Bill Raddatz and cook Steve Ivan are cooking up a plan to feed lunch to kids during the teachers’ strike. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS
Help for hungry kids in the downtown core Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Ruth and Naomi’s Mission has brainstormed a way to help feed hungry children in Chilliwack — at least while the teachers’ strike is on. They are reaching out to the community in the downtown core since some of the free meal programs for inner-city kids are now on hold pending resolution of the labour dispute. They became aware of a gaping need around the downtown core, and took action, said Bill Raddatz, executive director of Ruth and Naomi’s Mission. They are joining forces with Bowls of Hope to provide nutritious
lunches and snacks. It’s students who would have otherwise been helped through programs at McCammon, Bernard, Little Mountain and Central elementary schools. “Speaking with some of the principals of these schools, we estimate that roughly 30 kids per school are going hungry every day,” said Raddatz. That’s about 120 at least. Many of these young learners have lunch and then go hungry until the next day. “They go without snacks after school and no dinner,” he said. “So we here are, coming to bat for these kids.” Here is the plan: “Those (families and the
students) who counted on the lunch program at the above listed schools, can come to the Mission on Monday to Fridays for lunch,” Raddatz told The Progress. Lunch will be served from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. starting Monday, Sept. 15. Bowls of Hope is working on the soup aspect, while the Mission will do the sandwiches and snacks. “We will continue to provide this service until the strike is over.” The folks at the downtown mission are not stopping with lunch. They also plan to start a Family Feast hour between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. “This is for the poor and
working poor of Chilliwack who only qualify for this new service if they have children. “All children must be accompanied by a legal guardian. This meal service will be offered daily except Sundays. They’re looking at their Sunday programming and the plan is to have something in place by November. They’re working with the faculty and PAC of Chilliwack Central Elementary School with an eye to “stepping up and providing snacks for their after school program,” as well. The meal provision will be addressing hunger in the neighbourhood in a practical way. Continued: SUPPORT/ p5

Oil spill cleanup could take five years: study Kinder Morgan projects impact of rupture into Fraser
said the new pipeline could be built with more frequent emergency shutoff valves or thicker steel near the Fraser River crossing, which would be horizontally drilled under the riverbed. The study cautions that it didn’t look at spill probability or take into account the various Trans Mountain prevention commitments that could reduce the likelihood or the size of an oil escape. Georgia Strait Alliance executive director Christianne Wilhelmson said the recent Mount Polley mine tailings disaster shows unexpected failures can happen. Wilhelmson said the study demonstrates an oil spill could “devastate” habitat and wildlife in Georgia Strait as well as B.C.’s most important salmon river. Richmond Coun. Harold Steves said Kinder Morgan should instead pipe the oil south from Abbotsford
to Cherry Point, in Washington State, to avoid increased risk to the Fraser and conflicts such as its ongoing access dispute with the City of Burnaby. “There is an oil port on our coast,” Steves said. “It happens to be in the U.S., but it’s only 90 miles away.” He said the City of Richmond is an intervenor in the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion application because it fears an oil terminal on the Fraser in Surrey is Kinder Morgan’s backup plan, if the Massey Tunnel is replaced and the river is then dredged to accommodate bigger ships. Kinder Morgan also modeled a pipeline rupture near Hope, projecting oil could foul shorelines and vegetation as far as 100 kilometres downstream along the Fraser.

RCMP renew appeal for info on murder suspect
Jeff Nagel Black Press A summer oil spill into the Fraser River in Surrey from Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline would mostly be swept quickly downstream and into the Strait of Georgia, with some oil reaching the Gulf Islands. That projection, filed by the company as part of the risk assessment for its proposed $5.4-billion pipeline expansion, estimates cleanup could take up to five years. The study assumed a full-bore pipeline breach just downstream of the Port Mann Bridge releasing 1.25 million litres (more than
10,000 barrels) of diluted bitumen. “The process of restoration and recovery could take anywhere from 12 months to five years,” it said. Oil carried downstream out of the Fraser delta “is likely to disperse to the north or south in the strait” and is “more likely” to reach Gulf Island shorelines on the opposite side of the Strait than to directly affect Sturgeon or Roberts banks. Shoreline oiling is highly likely – 60 to 100 per cent probability – between the Port Mann Bridge and Annacis Island, the study says, dropping to less than 10 per cent downstream of the Massey Tunnel. The study assumes the spilled oil will float until it strands on shorelines. “Oil that enters salt marsh or reed bed areas may become
trapped there. Although the physical effects of this oil on the vegetation may be low to medium, oil spill recovery effects may be equally damaging to the vegetation, as well as affecting habitat utilization by wildlife species.” Ducks and geese would be at high risk of being harmed or killed, the study said, adding raptors, wading birds, shorebirds and swallows would face “medium” effects. Mammals most at risk would be aquatic species like muskrat, beaver, otter and mink. “It is assumed that some of these animals could be sufficiently oiled to cause death.” A spill in winter is more likely to be contained within the river and pose less risk to wildlife, as many species, such as fish, aren’t present or else are dormant. Kinder Morgan officials have
Jennifer Feinberg The Progress The mobile deliciousness rolls into Chilliwack next weekend. The return of the Fraser Valley Food Truck Festival is at Chilliwack Heritage Park Sept. 20 and 21. They’re in town an extra day, and with more trucks, less than six months after the last time. “It will be better than ever with a two-day event to accommodate all the attendees,” said event organizer Laine Ogilvie. Last April the inaugural food truck event was a huge success, attracting thousands to Heritage Park. Unfortunately some of the attendees had to leave the site hungry and frustrated, when most of the trucks ran out of food a little early. “We promise not to run out this time!” pledged Ogilvie online. “The people behind the food are passionate about what they are doing and work their butts off every day to make their businesses successful. That is why we do these events.” Look out for Barry and Darlene Mawson with their bright yellow truck. The retired Chilliwack couple is bringing The Bannock Wagon to the festival, serving up oldfashioned fry bread with a gourmet touch. “Our signature dish is barbecue salmon ban-

So we said ‘Let’s give it a go’ when we heard the festival was coming to Chilliwack again.” They sell the salmon bannock sandwich for $7.50. Mawsons specifically if they use wild salmon to make the dish. “You would not believe how many people ask that question,” she noted. There are no eggs or milk in the fry bread recipe she’s perfected. She picked up the technique years ago doing volunteer work with a Métis group. “We get told by some it’s the best bannock they’ve ever had, which is quite a compliment,” she said. Some have come back
for a second helping and thirds. “Their bannock sandwiches are so unique and delicious!” raved Ogilvie. She said their truck was a huge hit at the festival in Cloverdale, and Chilliwackians may have sampled their wares at Party in the Park in downtown Chilliwack earlier this summer. Other varieties served by the Mawsons include a cheddar melt bannock with garlic butter and Italian seasoning, or cinnamon and
sugar. They’re working on bringing out some new recipes. There will be family friendly activities and crafts, face-painters, as well as beer gardens, live music by Voodoo Chill on Saturday and The Deluxe on Sunday, and after the bands, a DJ will spin some tunes. Tickets are $2 at the door and kids get in free. Fraser Valley Food Truck Festival at Heritage Park, Sept. 20-21, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is still looking for the prime suspect in a Chilliwack double murder. Aaron Douglas is wanted on a Canada wide warrant in connection with the shooting deaths of 38-yearold Richard Blackmon and 36-yearold Tyler Aaron Douglas Belcourt. Both were gunned down in the early hours of Aug. 7 in the 46100 block of Gore Avenue. A third victim was fortunate to escape with her life. Douglas, 33, has a criminal record dating back to 1996 and is believed to be armed and dangerous. “IHIT is asking the public to assist by being vigilant and calling 911 if you know of Aaron’s whereabouts,” said RCMP Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound. “We believe that Aaron is a risk to the public and may be armed. Do not approach him yourself.” Anyone who may know where he is asked to call the IHIT Tipline at 1-877-551-4448 or email ihittipline@rcmp-grc. gc.ca. Tips can be submitted anonymously to CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at Solvecrime.ca

Police issue scammer alert
Winter just got warmer Jennifer Feinberg The Progress The popular Chilliwack Connect event every fall to support Chilliwack’s needy with local resources has a new format this year. Organizers have decided to hold a scaled-down version next month, calling it The Warm Winter Clothing Event set for Saturday, Oct. 4, at Evergreen Hall. “We’re making a conscious effort not to burn out our volunteers and sponsors who have so generously supported Chilliwack Connect,” said organizer Stewart McLean. The idea is that every second year they’ll organize a the full-on Chilliwack Connect, put on by local health and service agencies, businesses and more every October.
They will alternate every other year with a winter clothing-focused event. “We figured this was something we could accomplish,” said McLean. “We’ve put out the call and have started collecting donations of winter clothing.” It’s geared to the truly needy from the homeless to those at-risk, to the working poor or anyone on assistance. They can show up at Evergreen Hall to pick out a winter outfit including a coat, boots, a scarf and hat. The Warm Winter Clothing Event is Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Evergreen Hall. Refreshments served. Anyone wishing to make a donation of clean, gently used or new winter wear can call Ann Davis Transition Society at 604-792-2760.
Chilliwack RCMP is warning the public about possible scammers. Police received two complaints about someone who is phoning homes, trying to get personal information. Another worrisome complaint involves a woman going door-todoor claiming to represent a cleaning agency. The woman offered to clean one homeowner’s carpets. Her services were refused but she still tried to get inside. “Fortunately the

people involved in these cases phoned the police, did not provide any details or allow the person into their home,” said RCMP Cst. Ashley St. Germaine. “It can be hard to know if someone is a legitimate salesperson or caller and it’s often best to keep your guard up.” The RCMP offer some simple tips to
avoid becoming a victim: • Don’t give your personal information over the phone to anyone. • If you don’t feel comfortable opening the door for someone, don’t. • If someone shows up at your house and won’t leave, phone the police. • Remind children that when they are on
the phone they should never divulge that they are alone, where they live or who they live with. • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. To report suspicious behaviour, call the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers (anonymously) at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Crews in a helicopter survey a wild fire on the north side of Vedder Mountain on Thursday afternoon. Reports of the fire first started coming in at about 10 a.m. Because the fire is on provincial land, it is out of the jurisdiction of local fire departments – including Abbotsford and Chilliwack – and is in an area that is inaccessible. At press time the blaze was estimated to be 50 metres by 50 metres, according to the B.C.’s Wildfire Management Branch, which said it had 12 personnel and a helicopter responding. ago we started a Little Fox run a daycares and preschools, and it’s so great seeing the little ones getting excited about Terry and learning about him.” Fox said 84 cents from every dollar raised goes directly to cancer research. tance of what they’re doing. Fox has visited many schools, and always finds the experience inspiring. “I visit schools and ask them about Terry and it’s cool when a little kid puts up his or her hand and tells me exactly where Terry started his run, how far he ran and how much money he raised,” she says with a smile. “A couple years

“A few schools already do that,” Fox said. “Every school is a little different in how they approach it, but they’re all amazing.” Collectively, these events count for approximately 60 per cent of the Terry Fox Foundation’s annual fundraising income. Last year they raised just under $1.4 million. School runs are often spearheaded by a passionate teacher or administrator who works closely with the Terry Fox Foundation. Schools register and are
supplied with organizational guidelines and materials. “We give them some amazing posters to help promote the events,” Fox noted. “We have lesson plans online that are made by teachers for teachers. We have some great books and DVDs designed with kids in mind, and we have lots of temporary tattoos and stickers.” If requested, the Terry Fox Foundation will send out a ‘Terry’s Team Member’ to speak at assemblies, usually a cancer survivor who drives home the impor-

Sunday, Sept. 14, is the 34th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run. If you don’t know the story, you’re likely not Canadian. But it is an incredible legacy. It is highly unlikely that when Terry first dipped his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean on April 12, 1980, to start his Marathon of Hope, he had any idea of the lasting effect he would have. An entire country followed his lead, after his run was cut short, just outside of Thunder Bay, Ont., five months later. Spurred by Isadore Sharp, of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, an annual fundraising run was organized in his name. “You started it. We will not rest until your dream to find a cure for cancer is realized,” said Sharp in a telegram to the Fox family. And so it began. Now, 34 years later, dozens of countries participate in the annual Terry Fox Run. In Chilliwack, the Terry Fox Run takes place Sunday morning at the Landing Sports Complex on Spadina Ave., with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Terry Fox Foundation has raised in excess of $650 million, to support cancer research in Terry’s name. To most, the thought of that much money not already producing a cure is unfathomable. The problem is the disease itself. It is the most baffling disease known, because of its inconsistencies. It can run in the family, but it’s not genetic. It can be caused by smoking, but smoking does not invariably lead to lung cancer. It can be deadly, but it can also be benign. Before a definitive cure for cancer can be achieved, a link between all cancers must be discovered. We are not there yet. Terry’s initial letter to the Canadian Cancer Society, asking for support of his Marathon of Hope, included the line “I’m not a dreamer, and I’m not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles.” Do you? ~ Black Press
L OCALLY G LOBAL
Franklin expedition opens window on the North The discovery of one of the ships of the Franklin expedition was stunning news this week. Talk about the Holy Grail of marine archeology! The whole Franklin story not only represents Canadian and Arctic history but the entire global, sometimes tragic, saga of colonial exploration and trade. The idea of a shorter, northern passage to China was right in line with 19th century economic expansion. The discovery has launched a grocery list of things that archaeologists hope to find. Having found one ship, there’s huge momentum to locate the second one. And given the quality of this vessel’s preservation, researchers can’t wait to see what treasures lie inside. The scientists are an eclectic group from Parks Canada, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, the Arctic Research
Foundation, Canadian Coast Guard, the Royal Canadian Navy and the Government of Nunavut as well as an alliance of public and private organizations. Captain Sir John Franklin set sail in May 1845 from Greenhithe on the River Thames estuary, England, with HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, both sturdy vesMargaret sels outfitted with state-of-the-ar t EVANS equipment. Their steam engines were sourced from London-based rail companies that allowed a steady clip of 4 nautical kilometres. Creature comforts included steam heating for the 134-member crew, a 1,000-book library, and food for three years that included 8,000 lead-soldered tins
of preserved supplies. In tow on their way to Greenland were two other vessels HMS Rattler and a transport ship Barretto Junior. On Greenland’s west coast, they dropped anchor to slaughter 10 oxen for fresh meat carried on the transport ship, transfer the last of the supplies to Erebus and Terror, and write final letters home. Five men were discharged and sent home with the support ships before Franklin set sail westward with a final crew of 129. Franklin was no seafaring rookie. He had begun his career at age 14 and was a seasoned Royal Navy officer and explorer by the time, at age 59, he commanded this, his fourth and what would be his last, Arctic exploration. He wouldn’t have known then but the Northern Hemisphere was starting to pull out of the Little Ice Age, a period of three

hundred to four hundred years of glacial expansion driven by increased volcanic activity and changes in ocean chemistry and circulation. The Arctic in his sight was still deep in the clutches of advanced glaciers, the sea ice didn’t always melt in summer, and his vessels were no match for what lay ahead as he set sail for Lancaster Sound to eventually became icebound in Victoria Strait near King William Island in 1846. Many search expeditions tried and failed to find the lost Franklin ships and those searches continued from 1848 to 1859. But enough tantalizing clues surfaced over the decades, including a cairn with a note inside confirming Franklin’s demise on June 11, 1847, human remains, and pieces of a ship. Each was a clue to a mysterious past that was cemented in time and place by
Inuit oral stories of ships locked in ice and starving men struggling to survive. Now, with the discovery of one of the lost ships, what is next? It’s no secret Prime Minister Stephen Harper is a history buff. He’s obsessed with the North, the whole Franklin experience, exploring the Arctic, mapping the floor. All that knowledge added to the accumulated information on the Arctic that had been gathered in so many past searches and likely far more than Franklin himself would have gathered had he been successful. Ever the politician, Harper no doubt sees this all-Canadian find strengthening his endgame of strategy and sovereignty. He wanted the Franklin myster y solved on his watch. Will the Arctic be his legacy?

Student perspective on strike I am 15 years old and it seems as if I may be entering Grade 10 a little later in the school year than expected and I have a number of questions for the Liberal government. I’ve grown up in a union family, and I’ve researched it, and learned so much about the importance of unions in providing a living wage to workers. Why do they find the need to shut them down, degrade the people in them, and go against the law to fight them? The government says they are fighting for the students, but it seems like they’ve created a unjustified war with teachers, not for us, but for their own purposes. As a student I see the impacts overcrowded classes and lack of EAs make. Class size and composition is very important. Our teachers need to be able to help kids and teach us all at the same time. This is a very difficult task when there is no extra assistance for students who need a little
more help to understand the curriculum or have behaviour problems. The BCTF is asking for an eight per cent raise over five years; why is that so bad? The teachers I had last year were honestly some of the kindest human beings you will ever meet. They taught students, cared for students, and worked overtime every day for the students. For example, my track and field coach not only stayed after school for practices, but also drove us all over for meets, some of which lasted for hours. My math teacher did everything she could to make sure everyone understood the curriculum to the best of their ability, meaning lots of time spent researching good approaches, and planning lesson plans. They weren’t the only teachers doing this. Teachers across B.C. spend many extra hours on a wide variety of extracurricular activities. This is all
done as volunteers. They most definitely deserve a raise. The cost of living has gone up, so should their income. With all due respect (although how much respect is due to the lady that is destroying my education?), what kind of message does the Premier want to send to kids? Does she want them to unionize together and support one another when they need it? Or would she prefer they target each other like it’s archery practice and shoot the first thing that disagrees with them, or has the slightest bit of strength? I believe that the government fears unions because they are afraid to let citizens and workers have any power. I implore the Premier and the Liberal government: stop your attack on teachers and on my education. Linda Clarke Harter, Grade 10 Chilliwack

Will the trustees of the Chilliwack school board please finally come out publicly with their positions on the current teacher s’strike/lockout, including binding arbitration? Numerous other boards in our province have done so, while our board remains silent. Trustees are all independently elected as leaders of local public education, specifically to represent local interests. They were known to be well-meaning indi-
viduals of character and several are retired educators. However, they are not volunteers. They are paid by taxpayers. Therefore, they should be held to a higher standard. It is meaningful when an elected school board speaks out at any time, but never more importantly than alerting its constituents to the current emergency in public education. Our community needs leadership and straight talk from its
elected leaders to help comprehend a difficult situation. Our kids are not being properly educated; the schools are closed! Board silence cannot be an option. They have presided over the systemic financial starvation from our government and they have to know its devastating effects. Continued silence may be considered as tacit approval of the BC Liberals’ reduction in public education, which
is totally opposite to their mandate. Our community elected this board and it has been admittedly dysfunctional at times. Unless it can immediately start vocally and actively supporting public education, perhaps trustees should resign before the upcoming November election, as they have become unnecessary overhead and may be thought to be complicit in this tragic process.

Premier Clark needs to show leadership I think this government has set out to teach the teachers a lesson and yes I think they have succeeded. It’s time to put an end to this job dispute. Students, parents and support staff have suffered long enough and now small business is feeling the hit. The B.C Liberal party just barely won the
last election and the people of this province clearly did not want Christy Clark in government and that is why she is living in West Kelowna. It would be wise of her to remember that. Her numbers are dropping and the next three years will go by very fast and this will not be forgotten, Christy Clark’s actions or better
said her lack of actions with this matter will not be forgotten. Mr. Iker and Mr. Fastbender have put themselves on top a pedestal and they both need to brought down to earth. The leader of this province needs to start doing her job. C. McDougall

New immigrants get taste of Canada and its history Jenna Hauck The Progress A series of programs at the Chilliwack Family YMCA is doing its part to welcome new immigrants to Canada, educate them about our history, and make them feel at home right here in Chilliwack. YMCA Connections is made up of three new programs geared specifically for newcomers to Canada. It’s currently only offered in three cities in B.C., and Chilliwack – along with Vancouver, Burnaby – is one of them. “All of the programming helps them integrate and settle in the Chilliwack area,” said Linda Rubuliak| manager of YMCA
Connections. The Citizenship Preparation and Participation Course is a 10-week program where students learn from the Discover Canada Study Guide. The course takes place every Saturday morning for three hours and begins on Sept. 20. Since it’s only offered once a year, those interested are encouraged to sign up now. “We want to help people not just pass the citizenship test, but it’s more about how can we help people understand how to be a good citizen,” said Rubuliak. “So telling the story of Canada teaches them how we can be citizens together, such as by paying our taxes, volunteering, and voting.” The Canadian Fitness

Connection Courses blends fitness activities — such as hiking, cycling and yoga — with workshops about work and life in Canada. And lastly, the monthly social and educational events which began in Chilliwack in May, bring groups of new immigrants together to learn about life in Chilliwack. “The intent is to help people connect with each other, and the second is to practise their communication skills,” said Rubuliak. Plus, they learn a brief history about the Chilliwack area and Canada, she adds. In August, a small but chatty group of six new immigrants gathered at the Neighbourhood Learning Centre at Chilliwack secondary to learn how to make rasp-

berry jam. Beki Misener led the workshop. She talked about the history of canning in Canada which began in Prince Edward County, Ont. In the 1880s, nursery salesman George Dunning visited the Philadelphia Food Exposition where he learned about the new and popular industry of canning in the U.S., and brought it back to Canada Misener grew up with canning and juicing, and it’s now commonplace in her young family’s home. “It makes me feel good because I know I’m providing for my family,” she said. “This way you can control how healthy it is for your family, and you save money.” She cans a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as salmon.

“I like going to my pantry and opening it up and seeing what I can have today. It’s like having a little store right in your own home,” she said. Her husband fishes and hunts, so they always have a freezer full of wild meat such as moose, bear, deer, and elk. “Sounds like you have a safari in your freezer,” said Swan Lin from Taiwan. Lin, who had never before tried homemade raspberry jam, was the first one to bring a handful of crackers over to the jars as they’re being filled, hoping to get the first taste. She succeeded. winter roads should not be a problem. Of course, you would want to invest in a good set of winter tires. Beyond the city limits, out on the highway, heading south it handled the road well, with enough get up and go for good passing power when needed. It’s quite roomy for a small car. There’s room for three in the back seat as long as those passengers are not of a larger body type, if I may delicately put it that way. If you are of a larger body type, there is plenty of room in the trunk, if you desperately need a ride at that exact moment. (Just kidding.) But it does tell you the trunk is also roomy! Verdict: No complaints. For a sub-compact, you get great tech options, great fuel economy, in a car that doesn’t feel like you are driving something as inexpensive as it is. It’s fun and zippy for driving around town or highway driving. If you need a small car as a
daily commuter or it’s your second car to accommodate a bigger SUV or truck, I would recommend taking one out for a test drive to see if it fits for you in what you are looking for in a car. The Fiesta right now for me is tops in the subcompact class. A sleek and peppy roadster for the people the masses to drive topless. Whether through a rag or hardtop, this specimen of automotive manufacturing and design allowed people to feel the proverbial wind in their hair within seconds. I felt it as a kid as my mom was lucky enough to be one of the first Miata owners in B.C. when they came out in 1989 – a red one, of course – and took me out for rides frequently. Those memories have stayed with me over the decades, though I’ve been able to form my own bond with the car. Not only have we (meaning, the various MX-5s I’ve driven in the last in 11 years) put down thousands of kilometres

Nostalgia is one popular element of its appeal, but there’s an undeniable fun factor. Whether racing it on a track or just taking it to the grocery store, the first turn you carve in it will rope you in like an infomercial in the wee hours of the night when you can’t sleep. But in the case of the MX-5, you won’t have any buyer’s remorse. Fast-forward through the years and you’re now viewing the fourth generation MX-5. the stage here in California than via a little band called Duran Duran. And through a live satellite stream that was broadcast here, and abroad in Spain and Japan. The reasoning? – Both the English music group and the roadster came into popularity in the 80s and continued to succeed and grow in status over the decades. Besides, “Rio” is an incredibly catchy tune to dance to! That said, the MX-5 has a new, eye-catching look to it. Not many specs have been released though I can tell you this: it’s lower, wider, and sheds 100kg in the making. It also embodies the KODO or “Soul of Motion” design language. This two-seater also comes with sexy character lines from its four corners. Furthermore, up front, you’ll notice its headlights that look like they’re eyeing its prey; unlike the first generation’s pop up/ down headlights that were more than welcoming. Like with all-new models of anything legendary, there will be a polarizing reception. Some might think it’s

Regardless of the way it looks – which certainly helps its cause – it’s really about how you feel on the road, behind the wheel, and when you tuck it in at night. MONTERREY, CA. – Looking at the specs, it doesn’t seem too impressive. A 1.6-litre engine, 116 horsepower, 100 lb-ft of torque, a 0-100 km/h time of less than nine seconds, 14-inch tires. Heck, my bicycle has bigger rubber! Okay, maybe not. But 25 years ago, the Mazda Miata was a product of those numbers. It wasn’t necessarily endowed in the engine department. However, the two-door roadster did have everything else on its side. A sleek design, a peppy personality, a brilliant red coat and something that other cars have strived to achieve in their two-door roadsters over the years but

A luxury car by any other name Differing definitions of luxury in the automotive market are truly reflected in the eyes of the beholder. To one person it might be having all the refinements and gadgets available in a modern car accompanied with a smooth and quiet ride. To another buyer it might just be about the name on the front of the car, letting all to see it that the owner has “made it” establishing a certain status in society. For many it’s a combination of both. Enter the new Kia K900 luxury sedan from Kia. It has all the refinement and features found in cars with a longer pedigree in the luxury space but this car offers it at a discount. Then the name on the car comes into play. Is the Kia K900 a car anyone aspires to own? Well, after a weeklong trip with my family I’m more impressed with Kia than I have been before but the realist in me knows Kia isn’t a luxury brand, at least not yet. Looks: The K900 is an unfortunate name, it begs the question is this a dog? No, it is a full-size car about the same size as a 7-series from BMW or S-Class from Mercedes Benz. The K900 is based on the same platform as the Hyundai Equus but differs in price and content. The styling is strong, espe-

cially the top V8 model seen here with LED headlamps and taillights and very North American looking chrome multi-spoke wheels. The rear doors are huge and Kia has done but good job of keeping the proportions of the car in check while grafting Kia’s signature Tiger Nose grille. Inside: Every person that sat in the K900 was blown away with the refinement, fit and finish and especially the materials used. The V8 test model had leather covering the front of the dash and piano finish on the wood trim accented. Add in tasteful chrome and aluminum, dark, rich wood on the steering wheel and centre

console and the K900 looks like a million bucks. The front and rear seats came with ventilation and V8 models have a rear seat reclining feature. Despite spending countless hours behind the wheel travelling with two children in the back, the car offered a very relaxing ride for the passengers, and the kids especially liked the cooled seats on a very hot day.. Drive: The V6 model comes with the very competent 3.8L engine that puts out 311hp. having tried this in other Hyundai/Kia products and it is smooth and powerful. The V8 is superb, with 420hp coming from a 5.0L V8, there is no lack of power. The shift in the auto industry is to smaller engines that utilize turbo charging but Kia is sticking with good old engine displacement to get the job done. Covering more than 1,000km, the real world fuel economy was 12L/100km on the highway. To say that the K900 is smooth and quite is an understatement, I would put this car up against the new S-Class from Mercedes and a blindfolded passenger would have a hard time distinguishing the difference. What does become apparent is the K900’s lack of steering feedback to the driver and cornering ability. On Highway 3 from Hope towards Pentic-
ton the K900 wallowed in the switchback corners, it really didn’t like it at all. Driving back on the Coquihalla was a different story; the K900 shines in open road cruising, making it a wonderful long road trip companion. Verdict: The K900 is Kia’s very first pure luxury car and they got a lot right. The interior is as good as anyone in the marketplace and Kia does it at a substantial discount to the competition and power isn’t a problem especially with the big V8 available. But there were a few problems. The automatic lock and unlock feature on the outside doors only unlocked. This is probably a quick fix but an issue and the Bluetooth audio didn’t work either. Another stumbling block is the lack of all wheel drive (AWD). In this segment almost all vehicles sold come with AWD, in fact most companies only offer it. The market for this car is a happy existing Kia owner wanting to upgrade to something more and that is where the V6 model comes into play. Kia might not sell many of these cars but they have it for sale to show anyone that is interested that they can make a true luxury car, maybe not in name but in features and refinement. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Bigfoot sparked monster truck madness When I first started my career in the off-road and truck accessory business I was a young and impressionable 18 year-old. I was impressed with some of the successful off-road
shops in the US but I wondered how they had become so succeeded in business. One that came to mind was Midwest Four-Wheel-Drive & Performance Centre, owned by Bob Chandler,
creator of the legendary Bigfoot monster trucks. Back then large off-road tires for pickups were not available; this forced Bob to think outside the box and looked to the agriculture industry.
He bought a set of 48” tall Firestone tires and along with some custom made wheels; he mounted them onto his truck. People from all over the states started talking about
his truck. He was invited to car shows and tractor pulls and that started drawing attention from the four wheel drive magazines. His shop also started to grow rather quickly with all the new in-
terests in 4x4 modifications. A mechanic in his shop gave the truck the nickname Bigfoot because of the way Bob would drive it, heavy foot on the gas pedal. I was looking through one

of those magazines and saw a small picture taken from just outside the shop bay door. It was his truck with 66” tall Goodyear tires. I remember thinking he was crazy. After that the monster truck craze began. I was fortunate enough to meet Bob at a trade show in Las Vegas. His truck was there on display and he was outside sitting at a table having lunch. I approached him, not recognizing him in his cowboy hat and asked if the spare seat was taken. Very nice man, he shared with me some of his frustrations with parts breaking and how he ended up custom building a lot of parts in his own shop. Other people started building their own trucks and soon side-by-side competition began. There were crazy names for these trucks such as; Goliath, Taurus, King-Kong, Grave Digger, and Samson. It was a big thrill for many just to see these trucks drive slowly over some junk cars. They would stop in the middle and get out a wave. Soon fans wanted to see more, so the trucks would pop a wheelie before crushing them. Two cars became eight and then buses. I saw Taurus drive up several cars and onto the roof of two double decker buses. The truck came very close to rolling off, but after a few adjustments to the rear steering he climbed along and then off. The suspension of that time was more about lift height to accommodate the largest tires rather than full suspension travel which came next. The Baja race trucks could handle large jumps without any trouble, so the monster trucks started the change. Massive coil over shocks and four-point suspension that could handle the weight and abuse these trucks would dish out. Now the monster trucks could hit the cars at tremendous speed and fly through the air impressing all. Bigfoot #18 holds the Guinness World Record for the longest jump by a Monster truck at 214’ 8”. The popularity of these trucks continues to grow to this day and with more advanced technology who knows what the next wave of Monster Trucks will look like? ian.harwood@drivewaybc. ca

A dollop of hot jam was spooned onto a cracker and she immediately popped it into her mouth. A huge smile came across her face. It tastes “sour and sweet and very fresh,” she said. “And the colour is very nice.” As they started to make the second batch of raspberry jam, the workshop quickly turned from a Canadian history lesson into a world history lesson as each of the new immigrants chatted about how and what they can at home. In Romania, they mix sugar and fruit and let it sit overnight instead of using pectin, says Aurica Carnaru, who hails from that country. Sahar Beyram Abadi says they do the same thing in Iran. It’s also common to can carrots, apples, sour cherries, and quince. In Taiwan, pineapple, green plums and grapes are popular canning fruits. And in Ukraine, along with the typical Canadian canning fruits of peaches and strawberries and pickling cucumbers, they also can green walnuts, said Alina Protsiuk. For another new immigrant, it was her first time making jam. “No one back home cans,” said Patricia McLeod from Brazil, but she was pleased with the results. “Awesome. Really good,” she said of the raspberry jam. “It tastes fresh and different than store-bought.” Misener helped pour the last batch of jam into jars. “You’re preserving a bit of heritage and what Canada is,” she said. “This is part of who I am.” All three of the YMCA Connections programs are free for permanent residents who are immigrants. Peter Devette auctions off one of more than 100 bikes at Bernard elementary during a bike auction and fundraiser for Chilliwack Restorative Justice on Saturday. The stolen bikes were recovered by RCMP and then, after 90 days, given to the City of Chilliwack. The city then released the bikes to Restorative Justice to be auctioned off. Other fundraisers that day were a car wash, hot dog sale, and a bottle drive. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

The annual bike sale for Restorative Justice and Youth Advocacy brought in over $6,200 – money that will go directly towards the work of this program in the Chilliwack community. “Thank you to the people of Chilliwack for supporting our event in such a large way this year,” said Peter Devette, restorative justice executive board member and sale coordinator. This year the association added a car wash, bake sale and a concession stand which added to the funds raised. Said executive director Kathy Funk: “It takes a group of volunteers to make the event happen and we want to thank all of our community volunteers for helping out.” By supporting this event, it was a win-win for both Restorative Justice and for those looking for a good deal on a bike, she added. Bikes left after the auction went to the Chilliwack Lion’s club to help with the great work that they do in the community.

Wr i t e r and Chilliwack Progress columnist Margaret Evans will give a talk at the Chilliwack Museum on Saturday September 13 at noon. The talk, Horses from the Mists of Time, will explore the evolution of horses in North America over a 55 million years span. “Horses,” she explains, “have an amazing ability to adapt to changing climates as they co-evolved with their changing habitats. Modern horses, both wild and domestic, continue to depend on ancient behaviours to survive.” The talk will include a multi-media presentation with video, still photography and music. Her book, Hear t of a Hoofbeat, is on sale at the Chilliwack Museum. Her exhibit, Horses from the Mists of Time, will be on display at the Museum until September 25. If you’re a pregnant woman who will be having your baby between September and April, you’re in high demand by University of the Fraser Valley nursing students. Mothers-to-be in the Fraser Valley are once again invited to help a UFV nursing student learn about pregnancy and childbirth from the patient’s perspective. Women having their babies at Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Surrey Memorial, Ridge Meadows, Peace Arch, Langley Memorial or Royal Columbian hospitals are eligible for this program. Countless UFV nursing students have had the opportunity to shadow a pregnant woman through doctor visits, prenatal classes, labour and delivery, and the postnatal period through the Moms-to-be program over the past two decades. “It’s been a wonderful opportunity for our students. It gives them a chance to experience the pregnancy and birth process up close from the perspective of the mother and her family,” said UFV nursing professor Marlene Upton. The students complete this component of the program while they study the theory of maternity nursing and before they take clinical training in maternity wards. If you participate, the student nurse will meet you for a “get to know you chat.” The range of prenatal experiences the student may be involved with include a visit to the doctor, a prenatal class, and providing support for you and your partner during all of your labour and delivery, and a visit afterwards. For more information, or to volunteer, call UFV Health Sciences toll free at 1-888-504-7441.

tonight’s Friday night game at Townsend Park. ● The Yellow Giants flag football squad earned two weekend wins against the White and Black Giants. Adam Piper and Marrek Wolstenholme had two touchdown runs each with the Sache brothers, Mason and Maddock, also finding the endzone. ● The bantam Giants overcame a sluggish start on the road, beating the North Surrey Tigers 38-13. Down 6-0 early, Chilliwack surged ahead on a 22 yard touchdown pass from Gabe Olivares to Ryan Clayton. Olivares booted a field goal to put the Giants up 10-3, and followed up a Cash Weich interception with a 70 yard catch-and-run TD to Clayton. On their next series, a 15 yard run by Mitchell Byrne set up a one-yard plunge by Olivares. The defence locked it down in the second half, starting with an Adam Phillips interception. Hayden Oraschuk added a quarterback sack, Erik Vander Werff recovered a fumble and Warren Rogers and Nat Oenema dominated the line of scrimmage. Clayton caught his third TD pass of the game and Byrne rumbled in for the final Chilliwack major.
Chilliwack’s Tyron Ledingham is tracked down by a Vancouver Island Raider defender during BC Football Conference action last week in Nanaimo. Ledingham’s Huskers lost 81-6 and remain on the road this Saturday for a game against the Langley Rams. GREG SAKAKI/ BLACK PRESS
BC Bounce expanding to Chilliwack
Eric J. Welsh, The Progress A popular basketball program is expanding from Abbotsford to Chilliwack. Starting Sept. 16-17, BC Bounce will offer hoops schooling to boys and girls in kindergarten to Grade 8. Called BC Bounce Chilliwack, sessions will be held in the Cheam Leisure Centre
Gymnasium. For a registration fee of $165, players will get one 90 minute practice and one game day per week. “It’s a new program in partnership with the leisure centre, with the goal to expose as many kids as possible to basketball,” said Pat Lee. Pat and Mike Lee (father and son) founded BC Bounce in Abbotsford three years ago. Pat should be wellknown to local basketball fans for a hugely successful run at the University-College of the Fraser Valley. After coaching the UCFV women for two seasons, he moved to the men’s side in 1995. Pat went 151-56 as the Cascades coach. He guided UCFV to four British Columbia

Lee describes him as “We’ve been really strong with that in a great young coach. “We’ll start with Abbotsford and we must continue with that those two and myself and see what we need here.
from there,” Lee said. “That would allow us to start with 30-40 kids. If we get those numbers I’d be ecstatic, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see more.” A typical practice will start with a short but energetic warmup followed by station-work. Kids will cycle through 10 minutes of passing, then layups, then shooting. Older players will work on one-on-one moves and all practices will end with some sort of game. “We usually end it with something fun like dribble tag, so they all run away happy,” Lee said. Saturday’s games, depending on numbers, will be played four-onfour. “Over the weeks the intensity goes up and
the kids seem to have a great time,” Lee noted. “And we feel that playing four on four in a game situation prepares players for the club program we offer in the spring and fall.” One thing Lee promises is that the kids won’t be standing around. “I want them busy, active and engaged with smiles on their faces,” he said. “I hate to see kids standing around and when I step on the court, it’s business for me. I’m there to make sure those kids get good benefit from what I know, and I get after it. That’s the way I want our young coaches to be.” Lee does not expect BC Bounce to compete with Trans Canada Athletics, a flourishing program that starts in
early April and carries on through the summer. Rather, Lee expects the two to complement each other, with BC Bounce running until March. The Abbotsford program started with 18 kids and now serves 100-plus. “What I love to see is the four, five and six year old kids who come in a bit timid, and by the time the session is over they are enjoying the whole experience and are left wanting more,” “Lee said. “It’s overwhelming at the start when they can’t even dribble the ball. But when it’s over I ask the parents and many of them say, ‘My kid loves it.” Get more information online at bcbounce. com or email patleebb@ gmail.com

Sports Vipers scrambling to find coach
Kevin Mitchell, Black Press One of Chilliwack’s oponents at the upcoming BCHL Showcase (Sept. 19-21) is without a head coach. Jason Williamson dropped a bomb on the Vernon Vipers Saturday, leaving the team ‘for personal reasons.’ Duncan Wray, the team’s longtime owner, addressed the Vipers after their exhibition win over the Salmon Arm SilverBacks Saturday night. “It boggles my mind how many resumes we are getting from all over North America,” he said. “We’re going to get something done in the next while, as long as it takes to get the right man.” Williamson, 33, was set to enter his fourth year as Vernon’s bench boss. Last season, the former Viper captain guided the team to the Interior Conference title and a semifinal appearance at the RBC Cup. “Jason has decided he needs some time away from the game to get his affairs in order
and I respect that,” Wray said. “He has been great for our hockey club and will be missed, however, we must move forward.” Assistant Kevin Kraus is the interim head coach/GM, while Eric Godard stays on as assistant coach. “I’m confident in what Kevin can do in the short-term with Eric’s help, but it’s unlikely to be a permanent thing, and he’s content with that,” said Wray. Kraus, a Californian, served as head coach/ GM of the KIJHL Revelstoke Grizzlies for two years before working as an assistant coach under Troy Mick with the BCHL Salmon Arm SilverBacks last season. “I think I’m ready to handle the load,” said Kraus, who was captain of the 2009-10 Royal Bank Cup champion Snakes. “None of us expected this to happen, but Jason did a good job recruiting and setting up the team for success.” “It was a little bit of a shock to us,” said Viper captain Riley Guenther. “We weren’t
really expecting this. We know he has his reasons and we respect him for doing what he has to do. “The mood is fine with everyone; we need to keep moving forward. Nothing changes for us; we need to keep focused on what we are doing.” Guenther said the sudden coaching switch won’t change his role. “I’m here to make sure guys are still on board with what we have going on,” he said. “Duncan told us he is trying to get it done sooner than later. But we are ready to go with Krauser for now.” Kraus and Godard both played in the Western Hockey League and with Kraus being a d-man and Godard a forward, they should bring a solid dynamic to the bench. “We’re just getting the team ready for the Showcase in Chilliwack versus Cowichan Valley Capitals),” he said. “We want to be a puckpossession team. We don’t want to give up too many goals, but we don’t want to limit our offence.”

(Nee: Martindale)
Barbara Yvonne Mitchell (Martindale) passed away peacefully September 6, 2014 after a lengthy hospital stay. She was born May 10, 1935 in Atchelitz, British Columbia, where she lived her entire life. In 1950, she married her beloved Gordon. They were married for 49 years, raised 7 children. She was a second mother to many more. Mom was an avid volunteer with Chilliwack Minor Baseball, Chilliwack Hospital Auxiliary, Carman United Church as a Sunday school teacher, above all was a Life time member of the Atchelitz Women’s Institute. Best known as the Airport Coffee Shop Pie Lady, Barbara established a successful business beginning in 1980, sharing her love for home cooking and spread the joy for her handmade pie. In 1983 she opened a second restaurant in Sardis, “Devan’s Restaurant”, named after her youngest son. She retired from the restaurant business in 2008, but that didn’t stop her from making pies as she continued to provide a slice of heaven for anyone who asked. Barbara had a kind heart, reaching out to those who needed support, often including Mitchell sized hospitality. Family and friends were her priority in life. Barbara’s family is her legacy. Predeceased by her mother Selma, husband Gordon, son Jeffery, brothers Leonard and Gerald.
