By Shawna Price Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) is the leading cause of mental impairment in Canada and the industrialized nations of the world. It is a major root cause of numerous social disorders, including homelessness, depression and criminality. People with FASD also are at high risk of learning disabilities, early school dropout, juvenile delinquency, drug addiction

and alcoholism, mental illness, child and spousal abuse, unemployment and poverty. FASD is the most common form of preventable brain damage to infants in the Western world. The brain damage is physical, irreversible and results in lifelong challenges in learning, behaviour, employment and socialization. On the ninth minute of the ninth hour of the ninth day of the ninth

month, we are asking the world to remember that during the nine months of pregnancy, a woman and her baby should remain alcohol free. No amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy. Children with FASD have poor memories, cannot foresee consequences, have difficulty making choices and have challenges socializing with peers. Below are some tips for children with FASD.

Making decisions • Routine is important. Do the same things the same way each day. Repetition will help your child develop a good life skill. • Keep your explanations short and use the same words each time. • Use visual cues or hints when you can. • Offer only two choices at a time. Try to cut down on things that are a distraction, as it’s hard for them to think straight

when a lot is going on. • Point out good decisions and good choices made by your child. Making friends • Find games and activities that are safe and supervised to help your child build social skills. • Don’t expect your child will have a large group of friends. One or two close friends will help your child stay safe.

Attempted murder suspect back in court

Friday, September 12, 2014 Cariboo Connector

100 Mile House area resident also facing numerous other charges

Ken Alexander Free Press

100 Mile House area resident Phillip Thomas May will be back in court on Sept. 17 to set a trial date. The 59-year-old was charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident on

May 31. 100 Mile House RCMP responded to a complaint of a man in distress in the 7000 block of 93 Mile Loop Road. When officers attended the scene, they found a 39-year-old 100 Mile House area man who had been shot. Suffering

from serious but non-life-threatening injuries, he was rushed to hospital, and later released. When May was identified as a suspect in the shooting incident, RCMP members went to a Lone Butte area

home to arrest him. When they arrived, the police confirmed May was present, but he fled the residence, hopped into a vehicle and raced away from the scene. RCMP officers eventually arrested the

suspect after they forced the escape vehicle off the road. May is facing other charges, including aggravated assault, using a firearm to cause bodily harm and flight from a police officer.

International FASD Awareness Day celebrated on Sept. 9 • Children with FASD usually feel best in places they know and in situations they can predict. Avoid large sleepovers and parties. • Repeatedly teach them the social skills of listening, taking turns, not talking when others are and taking an interest in other people by asking them questions. • Children don’t notice they are different. Even though we know they are less mature than their peers, if they are happy the way they are, then that’s where they are at and that’s great. As the FASD key worker at the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC), I support children with the knowledge there is no magic way to make it go away. I teach them ways to live with their disorder and build a happy life around it. For more information on FASD and services that are avail-

All five recent graduates of Sprott Shaw College’s Health Care Assistant course completed their studies with honours. Sprott Shaw satellite campus manager Diana Badke says these grads are now equipped with the skills and certification they need to obtain employment as a health care aid. “It was very exciting to graduate our first group on Aug. 8.” Campus director Zola Goebel, and Diane Brummer both taught a two-week portion of the course and traveled from Penticton for a graduation celebration where Goebel presented the diplomas, she notes. “Over 60 family and friends gathered to celebrate at a potluck barbeque held at Cheryl Walters’ home in 108 Mile Ranch.” Badke says the grads

CFEC AGM well attended At the recent Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre annual general meeting, a Deloitte and Touche representative reviewed the audited financial statements, commenting positively on the work of the CFEC. In the annual report Lisa De Paoli, CFEC executive director, shared some of the achievements of the board, management and staff over the past year: • Developing Youth Outreach and Youth Counselling Services. • Opening the preschool program at the CFEC Early Care and Learning Centre. • Celebrating CFEC’s anniversary of 25 years of service as of Aug. 8, 2013. • Co-hosting the Cariboo Chilcotin Early Years Conference. • Providing the NonProfit Board Workshop. • Promoting food security. Through community awareness and fund development, CFEC has more than doubled its membership to more than 100 individuals. In the fall, the CFEC

board developed a new strategic plan for 2014 to 2017. These three goals will set the direction of CFEC activities to achieve our vision of “healthy families living with vitality.” Goal 1 – Positively impact on the lives of children, youth and families in the South Cariboo.

Goal 2 – Secure the resources and infrastructure needs to support children, youth and families. Goal 3 – Advocate and mobilize community to support children, youth and families. “CFEC is so thankful of the support of the community over the past six years,” says

De Paoli. “We look forward to your continuing support as we strive to help the ever growing number of children, youth and families who are struggling to be strong and healthy while facing financial, physical and emotional challenges in their lives.”

Mid‐Autumn Moon Festival successful

A celebration of the founding of Barkerville, British Columbia’s Chinatown and the inaugural chapter of B.C.’s Chinese Freemasons drew more than 1,000 people to the National Historic Site of Canada’s annual MidAutumn Moon Festival on Aug. 16. Mid-Autumn Moon Festivals have been held throughout Asia for more than 1,000 years. The holiday is a time to rejoice over the bounty of the summer harvest, the fullness of the moon, and to recall the legends of Chang O, a tragic Chinese goddess who is said to live on the moon. The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is often compared to Thanksgiving in the western world because of its spirit of appreciation and the abundance of food, including the traditional moon cake – a flaky, round, semisweet pastry often filled with bean or lotus-seed paste shaped to resemble the full moon. Millions of moon cakes are sold and/or gifted around the world during celebrations of the Mid-Autumn Moon. Barkerville’s 2014 Mid-Autumn Moon

Heather Kent, left, Darren Kent, McElhanney’s division manager-legal surveys, Linda LeComte, Brian Harrison, Scotiabank’s Quesnel Branch manager, Nancy Mattison, Wanda Harrison, James Douglas, Barkerville Visitor Experiences manager, and Bev Archambault got together for a sponsorship appreciation photo.

Festival included a variety of daytime and evening activities commemorating B.C.’s Chinese-Canadian pioneers, including lion dances, traditional Chinese noodle-making demonstrations, lantern-making workshops, a tea ceremony, games for all ages, mooncake tasting, two special celebration banquets, late-night fireworks, and a spectacular parade of illuminated paper lanterns that filled the event with equal parts revelry and reverence for one of B.C.’s oldest and largest ethnic communities. This year’s sesquicen-

tennial Mid‐Autumn Moon Festival was made possible by an annual gift from Community Sponsor McElhanney Consulting Services, Ltd., whose much appreciated funds went

directly to the special event weekend, including the purchase of moon cakes, lantern making supplies, prizes and fireworks. “McElhanney Consulting Services

Nominations still open for hospitality stars

It’s time for tourism and hospitality stars to shine in British Columbia. Presented by the Tourism Industry Association of BC (TIABC) and the BC Hotel Association (BCHA), the 2014 BC Tourism and Hospitality Awards are still open for nominations, but folks need to hurry because the deadline is Sept. 19. “The BC Tourism and Hospitality Awards recognize businesses and individual leaders whose considerable achievements contribute to one of British

Columbia’s most important economic drivers,” says TIABC chair Christine Willow. “We have some outstanding talent in B.C.’s tourism and hospitality industry and they deserve the spotlight.” Award categories include: Tourism & Hospitality Business of the Year; Tourism & Hospitality Leader of the Year; Employees First Award presented by go2hr; Outstanding Customer Service; Best Tourism & Hospitality Media Coverage; Best Tourism & Hospitality Marketing Campaign; Best Technology

Innovation in Tourism & Hospitality; and the BC Destination Marketing Organization A s s o c i a t i o n Professional Excellence Award. Winners will be announced at the pres-

tigious BC Tourism and Hospitality Industry Awards gala evening on Nov. 4 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The gala wraps up the two-day BC Tourism & Hospitality Summit and CONNECT

Food+Drink+Lodging Show. For more information on the summit and the awards and to access nomination forms, visit the event website at BC Tourism & Hospitality Summit.
