Frosty: Joe Donald, 14, places his hat on this newly created snowman while his five-year-old sister, Evelyn looks on. The snowman was built Monday when Rimbey got their first, unwelcome taste of winter.
Surprise: Mathew Torgerson who lives at 4909 – 56 Ave. was shocked to discover this huge tree in his front yard completely broke off and fell over. He said it was a healthy tree, but, no doubt, the weight of the heavy snow on its branches caused it to crash. Trees were reported down throughout town Monday and town crews were kept busy cleaning up the debris. (see story page 6) Treena Mielke Photos
Eighty-room affordable seniors’ complex planned for Rimbey By Treena Mielke After several months of behind the scene discussions, Rimoka Housing Foundation has announced plans to construct an 80-room $15.5 million affordable seniors’ complex in Rimbey. Work on the proposed complex to be built on 8.54 acres of land purchased by Ponoka County for $310,000 south of the Best Western Rimstone Ridge Hotel is slated to begin next spring.
Board chairman Paul McLauchlin is pleased the project is moving ahead and happy the Foundation has opted for a large facility that will contain 80 rooms. “In a town this size and a region of our size an 80-room facility will be a big benefit. It will be a regional hub for sure. I’m very excited.” McLauchlin said the Foundation plans to contribute $3.5 million to the project. “That is approximately a twenty per cent contribution,” he said.
The remainder of the project costs come from a $13.3 million grant made available through the Provincial and Federal governments. Approximately $12 million of the grant has been earmarked for the new facility and the remainder of the funds will be used for remedial work to Parkland Manor. McLauchlin said endorsement of the debt by partner municipalities including the Town of Rimbey, Ponoka County and the Town of Ponoka has been requested by the

minister. While the board is still waiting for this endorsement, McLauchlin said he is confident the Foundation can handle the debt load and doesn’t foresee any roadblocks. “The partnership between the Ministry, the federal government, our CAO, the board and the Town of Rimbey on this project is a great example of partnership and collaboration that exemplifies how we get things done in our part of the province,” said McLauchlin. Resident helps Rimbey Mounties identify man facing mischief charges Rimbey RCMP detachment investigated 45 files this week. Highlights include criminal harassment, theft, impaired driving, sex assault, drugs, fraud, break and enter, mental health issues, and other serious matters. Charges laid In the early morning hours of September 9, at approximately 2:30 a.m., an alert Rimbey officer observed an orange Pontiac car with license plates belonging to a different type of vehicle cruising around town. When the officer stopped the vehicle, he could immediately smell dope emanating from the open window. The 22-year-old female, a resident of Bluffton, was found to be driving without a valid class 5 driver’s license and was unable to produce insurance or proper registration. A search of the vehicle revealed a small amount of marihuana and methamphetamine. The driver was arrested and charged for possession of illegal drugs and with multiple vehicle offences, including no insurance, which is a minimum $2,875 fine. Drunk driver arrested Later in the evening on September 9, at approxi-
mately 10:30 p.m., a Rimbey Mountie patrolling Highway 53 near the 5th Meridian Road observed a pickup truck swerving all over the highway. When the vehicle pulled over, a can of Budweiser was seen flying out the passenger’s side window. The 41-year-old female driver, a local resident, was arrested and had her 2010 blue Ford F150 seized and impounded. The accused blew almost twice the legal limit and was charged with drunk driving. Stop payment Police have been following up on an unusual case involving a local auction service. Recently, an elderly man from Alix attended the auction and won the bid for a car. He paid for the vehicle with a cheque but then proceeded to the bank and put a stop payment on that particular cheque and then registered the car in his name. Not surprisingly, the auction service was not too pleased with the way the sales transaction ended up, so the police were called to investigate the matter. Following the investigation, the 89-year-old man has been criminally charged and the vehicle seized. RCMP busy

Blackboards, chalk and black and white rules The word was ‘beautiful’. The little kid, sitting in the middle of the third row, swung her feet which didn’t quite touch the floor and chewed on the end of her pencil, thoughtfully. ‘Beautiful.’ She printed beautifil and hoped for the best. The spelling test was over. “Wrong.” Hold out your hand. One quick sting of the strap and it was over. One word spelled wrong, one strap. Two words, two straps. Though it was long ago and I have to travel far down the long, dark corridors of memories, that particular one will be etched in my mind forever. The day I got the strap. It came to light the other day when an old school mate came to visit. The visit was, as it always is, punctuated with ‘remember whens’ and lots of laughter. Of course, we did the usual talking about the grandchildren, showing off our pictures and being all proud, the way grandparents are. And then he said ‘do you remember those oiled wood floors in the school?” I used to always get slivers in my feet because of those floors.” It took less than a heartbeat for me to go back there to that two-room school house, which did, indeed, have oiled wood floors and about another heartbeat for me to remember when we played prisoner’s base in the basement at recess. And I remembered the classroom and the long row of windows facing west, windows where the rays of sun inevitably crept in, coloring the grey and dusty molecules of air in the classroom with mini rainbows. As we talked, the memories came fast and furious, ricocheting off one another and bouncing
about in the present like so many soccer balls. “I don’t remember getting any slivers?” I said. “You probably had shoes,” he said. “We never had shoes.” “I got the strap,” I said, somewhat proudly. “For getting a spelling word wrong. Did you ever get the strap for getting a spelling word wrong?” I ask hopefully. “I never got any spelling words wrong,” he replied, smugly. “Of course, you didn’t.” We laugh together, comfortably, bound forever by the invisible thread of memories, some true, some not quite so true. School days! Oh to be a kid again in September when threshing crews ruled and golden fields of wheat and barley were dotted with rows and rows of stookes, stretching from the edge of barbed wire fences to the end of forever, maybe even to Saskatchewan. It was the days where rules were black and white; like the dusty white chalk and the ominous
black board that covered the wall at the front of our schoolroom. It was the days when students began their day by saluting the flag and saying the Lord’s Prayer. We did it without question. In our world, there was no grey, no in betweens, no maybes. It was the days when a teacher, even a meek, mild and gentle teacher, could wield the strap for the crime of getting a spelling word wrong and no one freaked out. Weirdly enough, I loved that teacher. She was kind to me, even sometimes sharing the lemon tea she brought in a huge silver thermos with me and a girlfriend, quietly on the sly, after school, when the other students had gone home. “Lemon tea,” we would say in unison, looking at each other conspiratorially, like we had this huge secret no one knew about. And, another weird thing. I know I will remember, now and forever, how to spell beautiful, even without spell check.

Gloria Nesbitt loves to create. As an artist who observes expressions and notices the unique character lines etched into the faces of seniors on canvas, she takes great pleasure in people watching and then with lightning strokes of her artist brush, creating a portrait. A busy mother-of- four boys, Nesbitt loves to create beauty with her artwork. It was this love of creating and her fascination with faces that drew her to the A & W restaurant a few weeks ago. Armed with her artist tools of sketchpad and watercolors she spent a delightful morning capturing the faces she observed on canvas. “The elderly faces especially, I find fascinating,” she said. “I just about chickened out, but then I decided to go ahead and do it.” Nesbitt said it is especially challenging to draw the faces of people who are not posed for their portrait. “The bend in the eyebrow, the angle of the neck, these are fascinating to get down on paper,” she said. Gloria Nesbitt took her artist tools to A & W recently and enjoyed some quiet time sketching the Art has always fascinated Nesbitt. faces of the locals who were partaking of their morning coffee and socializing. Olson withdraws from October byelection race By Treena Mielke The worry of not being able to commit to the time needed for the position has prompted David Olson to withdraw from the race to fill a vacancy on town council. Olson, who had previously decided to let his name stand to run in the byelection coming up on Oct. 6, withdrew Tuesday. Olson said he had originally decided to let his name stand because he felt his time being employed in public works for Rimbey (more than a decade) would be an asset as a councillor. However, after talking to Rimbey CAO Lucien Cloutier about the time commitment needed, he decided to drop out. “I work in the millwright union and am sometimes away for extended periods of time,” he said. “That wouldn’t be fair to the electors (to be on council). Even though Olson has decided to stay away from municipal politics at this time, he said he may reconsider at a later date. “Later in retirement I could dedicate the time and commitment,” he said. Meanwhile Ben Nesbitt, a Rimbey firefighter and Brian Godlonton, the petroleum manager for Rimbey Co-op are vying for the position. Nesbitt, who is employed by Platinum Communications wants to see Rimbey attract new families to the community and Godlonton is concerned about the declining business community. The byelection is to be held Oct. 6 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. An advanced vote has been tentatively scheduled for Oct. 4 at Parkland Manor and an institutional vote for extended care residents will be held at that facility on the same day.

A roundtable discussion regarding recent changes to Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program did not produce immediately solutions, but the dialogue did bring concerns from stakeholders to the forefront. Rimbey Mayor Rick Pankiw who attended the discussion held in Rocky Mountain House last Thursday said he found the information valuable. “It’s the second one I have attended and they were both beneficial.” Pankiw said he is convinced the federal government needs to regionalize the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. “Alberta needs to stand alone as it is home to the majority of foreign workers, although those workers make up less than one per cent of the work force. “We need to look at the big picture,” he said. The roundtable was hosted by MP Blaine Calkins and attended by elected officials, local chambers of commerce and small and medium business owners in Central Alberta representing several industries in the area. “What is clear,” said Calkins, “is that the labour and wage pressures in Alberta are not temporary problems. We simply cannot continue to look at temporary solutions to fix these problems. Every successful business understands the dynamics of supply and demand. It doesn’t work if there is no supply and that is the problem that businesses in Central Alberta face every day.” According to Statistics Canada job vacancies are highest in Alberta and the accommodation and food services sector have the highest job vacancy rate in the country.

Classes begin at Christian School By Treena Mielke Classes are back at Rimbey Christian School. This year the school welcomes new teacher, Trent Coleman. Coleman, who is from Sarnia, Ontario, is happy to be living and working in Alberta, though he said he is somewhat surprised to see snow here in September. Previously Coleman taught English in South Korea. He has had three teaching stints in Korea, returning with his wife Seol-Hwa, whom he met there, and their 10-year-old son Joel. “We moved to Rimbey from Korea and we really like it here,” he said. “It’s very nice and peaceful.” Coleman is replacing Daphne Klopstra as the school’s Grade 8/9 English teacher. Principal Edith Dening said the student population of 83 which includes Fingerprints playschool is about the same as last year. “We have families moving out, families moving in. It (the population) stays pretty much the same.” Upcoming school activities include a grandparents’ day on Oct. 9. During the day grandparents or other special persons are invited to the school to share lunch with the students. “We have a big picnic at the school,” said Dening. “It’s a fun day.” She said the fall fundraising drive for the school kicks off on that day also. The Rimbey Christian School employs Alberta Certified Teachers and follows the Alberta approved curriculum. The Fingerprints Playschool, which is a division of Rimbey Christian School, offers playbased learning while instilling a sense of self-confidence and individuality. Children aged three to five are accepted.
Parents invited to attend the first parent council meeting By Treena Mielke Classes are back at West Country Outreach School and a new English teacher has come on board. First-year teacher Melissa Marois has replaced Lothar Zemski. Marois, who lives near Crestomere, is teaching part-time at the Outreach School and also teaches at Eckville Elementary. West Country Outreach School principal Ava Holliday said there are lots of exciting activities and events planned this year at the school. Coming up on Sept. 29 and 30, the students will travel to Frontier Lodge in Nordegg for a field trip. During their two-day stay they will learn first aid and CPR while experiencing the beautiful country west of Rocky Mountain House. This year the students will continue to volunteer at Parkland Manor and school representatives will continue to liaison with Rimbey’s interagency group. Talented and diverse musicians of national acclaim will visit Rimbey’s Beatty House during the next few months as the historical landmark has been selected as a venue for Home Routes, a non-profit house concert organization. Home Routes was created to promote talented musicians in the folk-blues-rootsinstrumental-alt country music genres by pairing them with volunteer hosts who stage small concerts in their homes. “In Rimbey it’s our Beatty House that will be the venue for these events,” said Bronwen Jones, a member of the Beatty House Society Cultural Committee. “We are one stop on one Alberta route called Big Horn.” The other stops on the Big Horn route are Camrose, New Norway, Red Deer, Priddis, Water Valley, Spruce Grove, Valleyview, Manning, Grande Prairie, Sherwood Park and Edmonton. Six performers are included in the route and will perform each month in Rimbey.
The first concert to be held at the Beatty House as part of Home Routes will be held Mon., Sept. 22 and performed by Matt Masters, a talented Calgary singer and guitar playing songwriter who has performed throughout Canada and internationally. His album All-Western Winners was on the national folk/roots/blues charts top ten, peaking at number four. As well as being a talented musician Masters also has been featured in film and television and had a supporting role in the feature film, A Legend of Whitey, directed by Canadian director Dave Lawrence. In 2008 Masters premiered his first full-length musical play, Don Coyote. He took the show to London, England, Calgary’s High Performance Rodeo and also performed a live radio broadcast on CIUT, Radio Toronto. In 2009, Masters was awarded the Telus Arts Award for Artistic Innovation at the mayors evening for business and the arts in Calgary.

Rimbey area teen brings home gold
Submitted Meghan Cameron, a 14-year-old baseball player from Rimbey represented Central Alberta by playing on Team Alberta Women’s team, Team Alberta Bantam Team and Confederation Park, an all boys team in Edmonton. Meghan started her year of baseball playing in the Central Alberta League with the local Rimbey Midget team. The Midgets placed third in league play. On weekends she played with an all women’s team in Edmonton under Baseball Alberta. The team played against all boys’ teams. Following league play Meghan was chosen to play as the starting catcher with Confederation Park in Little League Western Prairies finals. It was a great experience and the team brought home a gold medal. Following that tournament Meghan was asked to play on the Team Alberta Women’s Team in Surrey, B.C. in nationals.
This, too, was a great experience as she played with and against some Team Canada women in the tournament. She was the youngest player there. Once again the team Meghan played for was fortunate enough to bring home a gold medal. Team Alberta had never won the national event so that made it even more special. And to cap off the year, Meghan played for Team Alberta Bantam team in Quebec. Meghan finished in the top 10 in batting with a .538 batting average and 7 RBI; good for third overall. Out of nine provinces the team ended winning the consolation final.Team Alberta Bantam team in Quebec. Bentley library receives facelift By June Norvila The Bentley Municipal Library is being given a new modern look. An outside facelift started the last week of September. The old cinder block building is being wrapped with Tyvek and will have an added 1.5 inches of insulation placed under new vinyl siding for the biggest portion of the outside of the building. Only the front portion that displays artwork acknowledging donors, and the doors and windows will remain uncovered. It was felt that leaving the donors’ names visible was important.
The extra insulation and modern siding, with extra caulking to seal out possible drafts, should help make the building warmer and easier to heat and make it more energy efficient. The library staff had input in choosing the colors and library manager Suzanne Moore is very pleased with how the color combinations compliment each other, incorporating the old colors that will still be seen. The $39,000 cost of the upgrade being done by RT Weather Proofing & Decking is coming from town funds. Pam Stephenson is the new parttime Grade 2 teacher at Bentley Elementary School. Bentley recycling bins moved to waste transfer site By June Norvila On Friday, September 5 the Town of Bentley recycling bins were moved to the Bentley Waste Transfer Station site. Â The town has been struggling with how to handle the problems created by the recycle bins for years. Access will now be restricted to the hours the Bentley Transfer Site is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m.
to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. There will be a Lacombe Regional Waste Services Commission (LRWSC) operator on site and so hopefully less contamination of the recycling bins contents, hopefully it will encourage more recycling, and hopefully less stuff will be left behind. The transfer station is owned and operated by the Lacombe Regional Waste
Services Commission. The town of Bentley owns the recycling trailer that accepts cans and will continue to haul it to Red Deer when it becomes full. Waste Management owns the two recycling bins which they empty and replace regularly. The projected cost to the town to level off an area for the bins placement could be about $8,000. It could also cost the town another $5,000 annually, in exchange for the Lacombe Regional Waste Services Commission to monitor, operate, and clean up the site as necessary. The transfer site will more easily be able to accommodate all the services they now provide. Â For a newly
subdivided 4.94 acre parcel of town land the LRWSC was charged $1.  They will pay the subdivision and land transfer costs. The commission will now have title to a lot instead of leasing the land from the town like they had been. The partial fence around the old site behind the arena that was “open for anyone to access at any time has since been bulldozed and the area is being cleaned up. There are no immediate plans for the area. Lacombe County reimburses Bentley 25 per cent of the net expense of recycling as their share of the project. People are asked to ensure they know what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in the different recycling bins.

MacLEAN Wayne Douglas MacLean, Wayne Douglas, after courageous battles with cancer, passed away at his home in Water Valley on July 26, 2014 with his loving husband, Brent Rock, his family and caregivers at his side. Wayne (also known onstage as Mr. Devon Mills) lived a full and fearless life and maintained an optimistic and spirited attitude with grace and dignity throughout his battle. Wayne was born in Pincher Creek October 27, 1963. While a young boy the family moved to Rimbey, AB formerly and more appropriately known as Kansas Ridge. Wayne graduated from high school a half a year early so he could “get out of dodge”. After attending SAIT, training as an optician, Wayne eventually became the marketing manager for Fort Optical, where he dedicated long hours in the service of the company. Wayne flourished in Calgary and proved to be a presence with which to be reckoned. With the emergence of Mr. Devon Mills, Wayne’s on-stage character, he became a highly successful entertainer. Using this creative outlet he raised much needed money for local charities including Donnie Peters Memorial Cut-a-thon and AIDS Calgary. Nineteen ninety-six proved to be a landmark year for Wayne: he and his partner were married in the United Church. In that same year they opened the Foxwood Bed and Breakfast, where Wayne was a stellar host who could always be counted on for his charm and quick wit. Wayne was “big into Karma” and proud to include the Foxwood in the Kid’s Help Phone ‘Home for the Holidays’ Tour. After selling The Foxwood, Wayne and Brent relocated to Water Valley, where again Wayne played gracious host at The Aspen Café and Gallery. Wayne developed his considerable talent as a watercolour artist and was subsequently invited to show his work with Beacon Original Art, in addition to sharing his art at The Aspen. In addition to his devoted husband, Brent, Wayne is survived by his mother Reta (Morley Dell), brother William (Carla) MacLean, sisters Colleen MacLean (Don Wierenga), Joanne (Keith) Bratten, niece Gillian MacLean, nephew Will MacLean and numerous extended family and friends. Wayne was predeceased by his father James. Wayne also insisted we also mention his beloved dogs Charlie (his little Buckaroo) and Patch. Heartfelt gratitude to the numerous medical staff who were so kind with Wayne’s care. A special thank you to Dr. McGinnis, Dr. Bergh, Dr. Ruether, Dr. Braun and Dr. Ho, Unit 47 at the Foothills Hospital. To Didsbury Home Care for the most amazing care as well as Nurses Next Door for your compassion. Also to Cher Hunter, you are truly an angel. A Celebration of Wayne’s Life will be held at Knox United Church, 506-4th Street SW, Calgary on Sunday, September 14th at 4:00 pm. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at the Church prior to 3:30 pm for pre-celebration music in the Sanctuary with the Rhonda Withnell Trio. Reception to follow downstairs. www.knoxunited.ab.ca If you so choose, please make a donation to your local Humane Society in honor of Wayne’s commitment to the welfare of our animals.

Mr. Mervyn Vein Lawson passed away on September 4, 2014 in the Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 84 years. He was born at Sibbald Alberta on April 22, 1930, the eldest of 10 children born to Maxwell and Vera Lawson. Mervyn spent his first year on their farm at Alsask Saskatchewan. In 1931 he, and his parents, moved to a farm in the Meadowvale district west of Rimbey. He attended Meadowvale School for 8 years and then went to work doing various jobs including; logging at Hoags Mill, hauling cattle and lumber, and breaking land with his own tractor and plow. On November 21, 1953 he married Joan Stout and they lived in a teacherage at Mountview School for 3 years. They moved to Bluffton in 1956 and resided there until his passing. During his working years, Mervyn did things like operating heavy equipment and working on the drilling rigs, however his passion and main occupation was always owner-operator of his gravel trucks. He took pride in the fact that his truck was always in tip-top shape and he spent many hours greasing, tightening and tweaking to ensure that it was. Mervyn had a love of horses and his dogs. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards and his many journeys through the western provinces and the Yukon. He was very proud of his family and happiest when surrounded by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He often kept friends and family entertained for hours with many humorous stories of his life. He enjoyed telling them as much as everyone enjoyed listening to them. He was predeceased by his father Max, mother Vera, brothers Jim and Arthur, sister Mary May Bauer, sister-inlaw Phyllis Lawson, and brother-in-law Gene Stout. Mervyn will be sadly missed by his wife Joan of Bluffton, his 5 children; Bob (Pam) of Bentley, Lois Terry (Brian) of Bluffton, Bruce (Beth) of Calgary, Stan (Louise) of Brownfield, Gerry (Debbie) of Rimbey, 16 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 2 brothers; Lyle and John, 4 sisters; Myrtle (Ernie), Velma (Stan), Ava, Nora (Gordon), 5 brother-in-laws; Tom (Janet) Stout, Jim (Pearl) Stout, Ted (Grace) Stout, Roy (Pat) Stout, Herb Bauer and numerous nieces and nephews. MCLEOD Mrs. Yvonne Laura McLeod passed away in the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Saturday September 6, 2014 at the age of 83 years. She is survived by her husband Doug of Rimbey, children Paula Madu, Debbie Clutton (Dennis), Doug McLeod, and Barbara McLeod (Stephen); grandchildren Alyson Shore (Collin), Sydney Madu, Tori Madu, Clare McLeod-Smith, Rebecca McLeod, Malcolm Knutsen, Ronan Clutton, Ben Clutton; and great grandchildren Hannah Shore and Hailey Shore. She was pre-deceased by her parents Octavia and Joseph Fleury, sister Yvette Fleury, and brother Abe Fleury. The family farm near Crestomere was where Yvonne and Doug shared their home for over 50 years. She had many skills including harvesting massive gardens, and cooking and sewing for her family. Her children and grand-children enjoy many of the countless pieces of antique furniture she refinished over the years. She had an impeccable sense of style and was creative, focused, and accomplished in her many projects. Yvonne shared her love for literature and the arts generously with her family, and her quick-witted sense of humor will be deeply missed. Rest in love and peace. In keeping with Yvonne’s wishes a family interment service will be held in the Okotoks Cemetery in Okotoks, Alberta on Friday September 12, 2014 at 2:00 PM. In honor of her memory, donations to the Rimbey Continuing Care Centre or the Alberta Lung Association will be gratefully accepted. The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to the Rimbey Care Centre, Area 3 staff for the outstanding care Yvonne received, and the kindness and support extended to her family.
